Q: changed reg - games wont work- system restore wont work

None of my games will work. I took some advice of a forum because I couldnt get Perfect World to work and changed something in the registry to do with the port. Now no game will work and i would change it back but i dont know what it was previously.
My system restores wont work, wont even undo, and theres only one days worth there now. I dont know how to do a utilities reg scan which I think may be what I need to do, I dont know if its in my pc or on my XP disk. I cant use the disk because I dont know how to find my product code and the person I bought it off has gone to Cyprus .

I've done a Drwebcureit but really I need instructions for a 2 year old and I think this has happened since my last one. I had a Win32 Trojan in the other day and Vundo got rid of it I think, maybe its got something to do with that, maybe its still lurking around. Ive done a Combofix amd this was at the top - WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED. If anyone can help me, you would save my life, its driving me mad now.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

All of a sudden, I turn on my lap top (lenovo idea pad flex 10) and it takes forever to Load, then says windows 8 wont boot or something.
Takes me to a blue screen and I tries to system restore but that also won't load and go through. Help please?
I went to advanced options and pulled up the box you type **** in butI don't know what to put km it to make windows boot!

A:windows 8 wont boot and system restore wont work

You need to be much more specific about what your problem is. I can't tell at all from your post what's really happening, and neither will anybody else. What exactly happens? What exact messages do you get? What "advanced options" are you talking about? Also, it appears this site's profanity filter has blocked something in your post. Using such language is not helpful.

Most of what you posted (all that software info) was pointless and unneccesary.
What we need is the info from the BSOD (Blue Screen OF Death) just before automatic restart kicks in.

You need to disable automatic restart so that the BSOD stays on screen for you to be able to read it. Restart will then not occur until you restart manually.
To disable auto-restart:

Navigate to the Control Panel in Windows XP by left-clicking on Start, followed by Settings and then choosing Control Panel.

In the Control Panel window, open System.

Note: In Microsoft Windows XP, depending on how your operating system is setup, you may not see the System icon. To correct this, click on the link on the left-hand side of the Control Panel window that says Switch to Classic View.

In the System Properties window, click on the Advanced tab.

Locate the Startup and Recovery area and click on the Settings button.

In the Startup and Recovery window, locate and uncheck the check box next to Automatically restart.

Click OK in the Startup and Recovery window.

Click OK in the System Properties window.

From now on, when a problem causes a BSOD or another major error that halts the system, the PC will not automatically reboot. Rebooting manually will be necessary.

I am stumped as to why I can not do a system restore. Whenever i try and choose a date, etc. it does the restore but when it is finished it tells me it can not be restored to that date. Anyone know why?

Hey everybody, the past week or 2 it seems windows explorer has been crashing a bit too much, you know when the icons and taskbar disappear then few seconds later reappear. Anyway I did a few different virus scans, and it didnt find nothing, either did spybot.

So I decided to just see if system restore would fix this, but for some reason system restore wont work. I've tried numerous restore points, but when windows restarts it says "system restore incomplete" and that my computer couldnt be restored to that date. WTH is that about?? I've never had a problem using system restore before.

Few weeks ago I remember using the "disk cleanup" feature and deleting all resore points except for the most recent, I dont know if that makes a difference. Anyway im running XP home P4 2.0ghz, let me know what you think.

Hello and welcome!

Did you boot into safe mode and then try to restore your system? If you didn’t try that, please do. I have found many instances where a restore will not work in “normal” mode, but worked in SAFE mode.

In the mean time, I will locate the process or doing a manual restore by copying the most recent restore point to specific directories! I have the information here somewhere!

My F1, (or HELP fromthe start button) wont open the help page any longer. The INternet Explorer windows shows up (the one with the blue "I" and says "This page can't be displayed".
Also, System Restore won't work either. (System Restore goes through all the steps of restoring to a prior date, and then after the restart, a message states that the restore was unsuccessful. (Yes I have it enabled) I use SR all the time. This all started 2 days ago after I started to download a screensaver. All kinds of junk was installed onto my computer, most of which I have deleted, but possibly some thing is left that causing my computer to act up?

I posted in windows 95/98/ME (System restore wont work at all? I think I downloaded a virus?) to see more details. I did get a little help there, but figured Security was the right place to post this. I did contact McAfee tech support and was not helped at all. They just told me to disable the "Suspicious Script" alert and my problems would be resolved, NOT. In my view, all that did was turn off the suspicious script warning. (thats another issue entirely I know)

I was told that Tony Klein could possibly help me? Are you out there Tony. I need a bunch of help on this one.

Hi Everybody.

My Dad had some problems on the computer the other night regarding logging onto the net,

He phoned the support on the phone and they told him to delete the internet connection button under 'Network connections' and now he still cant log onto the net.

I said to save all the problems.... I would just use system restore (since I had about 10 restore points)

But I clicked 'restore my computer to an earlier time', chose the 'date' and when I click 'NEXT' (the final button to restore) it loads for a couple of seconds and then just stops. I tried it on every date on the calender... but no luck..

could anybody help please ?

Many Thanks,

A:System Restore Wont Work ...

G'Day Countryhardball,

First up, let's make sure that you have the System Restore activated...

Go Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.

Once in here, on the Left hand side of the panel, there will be a blue link System restore settings; click on it and make sure that the box Turn off System Restore on all Drives is Unchecked, otherwise you do not have any System Restore points to fall back on.

Now if the System Restore is turned on; then, you will need to try this as a workaround....

(You will need your Windows? CD)

Insert the Windows? XP SP2 CD in the appropriate Drive. (Hold down the Shift Key to prevent it from starting.)

Go Start > Run > type in sfc /scannow (Please note the space between the "c" and " / ") > OK.
This will activate the System File Checker, that will scan all the Windows? system files to ensure their integrity, and if missing/corrupt files are found, it will automatically replace them from the CD.

While sfc is running, it is not advisable to do any other work on the computer...this process will take around 45-65 minutes to complete.
During the scan, sfc may ask you to insert the Windows? CD, just click on retry and let it do its thing.

Once finished, remove the CD; reboot the computer, and all should be normal again (hopefully).

Post back with the results, and if there are any other queries/concerns.

Good Luck with it!

Kind Regards,

I installed XP over an existing version ages ago now. So don't ask me why I did it but I think it was to fix something. Anyway I have 2 versions of XP. I installed XP SP2 over the XP SP1 version which has a different serial number to the first one. When I installed it I did it from inside Windows and not from a hard boot. It installed fine but when I tried to run System Restore is wouldn't work. It will let me create restore points but I can't restore back to them. The program will run and then restart the computer. it appears to be working ok but when it boots into Windows desktop it says "System Restore failed to restore your computer to an earlier time - No changes have been made to your computer"

I have looked in the system restore directory and I have got a few restore points so it seems to be creating them but It just won't restore to them. By the way I 'm not running Norton AV. I have turned it off and on again and deleted all previous restore points but it's still not working. I think it has something to do with that install I did but I can't go back to my old version now without reformatting.

My computer has acted really weird lately. Ever since I was on youtube and clicked a video, (Not sure which video now. I was opening multiple pages.) my computer was attacked by viruses. Avira "Supposedly" removed them, but after this, Firefox would show up saying that it cannot display the page despite IE working. I made sure im not working offline because it tends to activate on my computer periodically.

I restarted my computer and now it won't even open Firefox. I downloaded Trojan Remover and Malwarebytes. I then ran a scan with Avira and it found one item which it move to quarantine. (Not sure if it was connected) Then I ran a scan with Trojan remover and it found nothing. I also ran a search with Malware Bytes and once again, nothing.

THEN I tried to systemrestore to 3 days ago, but it seemed to take awhile restoring. When I turned back on it said it had a problem restoring so files were unaffected. I changed it to 4 weeks ago, and the same message pops up and nothing has happened. I've ran another search with Avira and still it finds nothing.

I tried to switch to Google Chrome even and everytime I run the installer it says it has stopped working (Even though it still downloads for some reason) But then it acts just like Firefox when I open the browser, where it can't display any pages.

I can hardly get online, maybe once out of 3-4 restarts/shutdown. Any ideas? Sorry I'm having to do this on my blackberry. Thanks for your help!!!Edit: Moved topic from Vista to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

Before doing anything if you have not already done so, you should back up all your important documents, personal data files and photos to a CD or DVD drive as some infections may render your computer unbootable during or before the disinfection process. The safest practice is not to backup any files with the following file extensions: exe, .scr, .ini, .htm, .html, .php, .asp, .xml, .zip, .rar, .cab as they may be infected. How and Where to backup your files in XP or VistaHow to Backup and Restore in Windows 7How to use Ubuntu Live CD to Backup Files from your dead Windows ComputerPlease follow these instructions: How to remove Google Redirects or the TDSS, TDL3, Alureon rootkit using TDSSKillerDouble-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.

New install of windows xpsp2. windows firewall, avg, spybot, spywareblaster installed. Pc worked on the internet via ethernet.

Set up pc at a different site, installed usb modem, The internet worked but explorer just displayed 'page cannot be displayed'
uninstalled modem & fitted a nw card. same prob.

Set up pc at the original site, same probs.
reinstalled windows again thinking that the prob must have been caused by the modem drivers, but the same happened again.

The prob cant be spy/adware or a virus but Ive run out of ideas how to solve it.

Also system restore didnt work on the first install, and doesnt on the second, an error is displayed: the application or dll c:\windows\system32\mlang.dll is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

Anyone any ideas how to solve these probs?

My Dell Inspiron Laptop which runs on Windows Vista will not start properly, the screen will go black after loading, this is before i can get to the log on stage. There is only a cursor which i can move.

I then started Startup Repair and it performed the checks, but my computer still wouldn't start. I then tried System Restore which didn't have a backup. I clicked the link to create a backup, but it said 'Your computer is running in a limited diagnostic state'. I have tried running the Windows Vista disk and it doesn't change anything. I have tried every method I know of, but I cannot get my computer working. Is there any other way, if you know please help me.

One last thing you can try is to press F8 while booting and on the next menu, select the 'Last Known Good' option

Norton, aol and windows antivirus fail to find and destroy any viruses and all crash after so long of scanning. AOL spyware protection keeps blocking files called Virtumonde BY AND Virtumonde K, but will not let me delete them.

When connected to internet, no matter what web address i put in it always goes to the same webpage. Some kind of spyware i imagine. When disconnected something keeps trying to connect.

Other symtoms are -

computer crashes randomly.
computer restarts itself randomly
When i click on help and support it wont open and trys to connect to the internet.
when shutting down, the end task msg for - rundll32.exe appears
Safe mode does not work and simply wont start.
When windows starts and the screen to put in your password appears, i do so and press enter, then it flashes and goes back to that screen so i have to put it in again.
When windows loads up errors appear -
hpqthb08.exe application error
pchnotify.exe application error

Half of the system memory is always in use, even tho i have no software open (commit charge: 488M / 1248M)

Might be a failing Hard drive. Get to your bios and see if there is any diagnostics there to do a hard drive test. On some motherboards its delete on others its F2. If there is no diagnostics on the bios i would make a USB bootable diagnostics and do that.
I just had the same problems and found out the hard way that it was a hard drive.

I sure need your help on this! lol. I have a home built computer. It is about 6 years old.
The OS is XP Pro, 2 gig of Memory, 200gig WD hard drive, Asus P5AD2 Premium Motherboard. Here is my problem. I replaced the Power Supply that was in it. I replaced it with a Zalman Heatpipe Cooled 600 Watt Power Supply. All I did, is unplug the old PS, and remove it, then, put in the new one, replugged it, turned on my computer and it acts like
it is going to come up... the PS fan is running, a green led light on the motherboard is on, but nothing shows up on the monitor. The monitor power is on, and I have checked the monitor connection to the compter and it has a good connection. So, I thought maybe the new PS was defective or something, so I decided to just put the old power supply back in it, because it was running just fine before, I only wanted to replace it because it was kinda noisey and I wanted a quieter one. After putting the old Power Supply back in, I powered up the computer and it now is doing the exact same thing that the new Power Supply did. The computer lights and fans are all working but nothing is showing on the monitor. I checked to make sure that the cable and power hookup on the hard drive that has the OS on it is connected good, and it is. I am lost on what to do next. I hope someone here can help me please.
Thanks very much,

I just built a new HTPC, put Windows 8.1 on it, had RDP working fine for days. Even out of my house with port forwarding. Once I got everything where I wanted it, the last step was to change the port for security. I changed the registry Port Number (at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SYSTEM, CurrentControlSet, Control, Terminal Server, WinStations and RDP-Tcp), to a 5 digit number starting with 13 so its within the limits (also, I used to use the same port previously with Windows 7). Restarted and I could not connect. It did not work. So I tried putting it back to 3389 and its broken now too. I have a laptop on 8.1 also and changed it at the same time, now I have the same issues. I have tried everything I can think of. Check and even turned off the Firewall, used netstat -a and it seems to be listening on the correct port.
It seems to me there is something else at play here. Can anyone help me? This is at a bad time since I have leaving town for a few days and need access, I have to use VNC.
Help please.

FYI, I posted this exact same question here and have gone through some diagnostic steps to no avail: https://social.technet.microsoft.com...c-c24c20f3b2e7
