Solved: Thumb drive gone bad??

Q: Solved: Thumb drive gone bad??

I have a 512mb Verbatim thumb drive (one of several) that I use to play music from in the car. Today I tried to remove the current set of songs and replace with different ones. When I insert the drive into the computer it says that I need to format the drive prior to using. Odd, but I tried to format the drive. It then returns a message that says it cannot perform that format. I've tried different USB ports, all the same.
Have I just lost this drive and toss it?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a thumb drive in my computer and tried to eject it by going to the option of safely removing the item in the system tray. This usually works without a problem but yesterday and today, it said it could not eject it because it was in use. I have no programs open on my computer so I am unsure why this is happening. Any ideas? I don't like just ripping it out without safely ejecting through that program.

A:Solved: Thumb Drive Won't Eject

This happens when you are still using the thumb drive. In order to safely remove it, just click on your C:drive which will get you off your thumb drive. Now you can just Right click on the thumb drive and select the safely remove feature. This has happened to me also, hope it helps

Hello,

I've been trying to make 2 or more partitions on my USB thumb drive. I've searched the web, and people have said that it would be better if I didn't create any partitions, but I don't know why and I really need to do this. So I also searched for software, but no software I found had the option to JUST install it and then manage the partitions on my drive. All of them needed to create a boot disk, then do other unnecessary stuff that I just don't have the time to do (or even read their HUGE manuals). Plus, all of them refered to HDDs not USB drives (though I suspect this isn't a major obstacle). So, do you know of a simple utility, that will give the the ability to create 2 partitions on my USB thumb drive, and then format them using my desired file system? That's all I need.

I'm trying to use a USB thumb drive to backup data files. I purchased a 32GB USB generic thumb drive. There was nothing on it. I used the Win 7 "Send to" command to copy each file from my C: to the E: drive. No problem, the files got there successfully and I was able to open them, no problem.

Now, it's the next month and I want to refresh the files on the E: drive with updated files from C:. I've used the "Send to" command and "Copy" "Paste" commands and the data from the C: is not updated on the E: drive?

To preform a refresh of the files on E: from the C:, do I have to first erease the files on the E: or am I missing something?

A:Solved: Update Thumb Drive

i would suggest that a USB thumbdrive is not a reliable backup medium - they often fail
you would be better off using a external harddrive and perhaps using windows backup
or just manually copy them

rather than use send to
I would simply copy the files
create a folder using the date backwards
so
20141201
20150101
20150202
and then copy the files into the folder for that month
depending on the size the files take will depend on how many versions you can keep

Also if these are really important files - you should take at least 2 copies on different external media and also make sure 1 set is out of the house - so that if a flood, fire or theft occurs you do not lose all the backups
you can use a cloud service like , onedrive, megadrive, idrive , dropbox etc - quite a few around
i have been using idrive.com this weekend and quite like the way it works

A friend of mine brought me his laptop stating that after leaving it up for an hour or two (just sitting idle) the mouse skips or lags.

Laptop: Sony VAIO model PCG-K25 Pentium 4, 512 Mg RAM, running WinXP Home

I took the laptop scanned it for viruses using PandaSoft AV online scan which came back clean. I also installed AVG Spyware & AV (Free versions) which installed and ran clean.
I also installed Ashampoo Firewall free version. My friend just doesn't have the funds right now to purchase the full versions.

I also applied all Microsoft updates as required.

The system runs smoothly after rebooting with no issues. I installed and ran HJT2 and then saved out the log. After sitting idle for a few hours I noticed what my friend had described with the mouse and the system being extremely sluggish. Almost like there was a process running wild. I was able to pull up task manager and noticed the CPU pegged out steadily between 95 - 100%. Again, I ran HJT2 and saved the log file out.
I decided to plug in my thumb drive to copy the log files off the laptop. When I plugged in the thumb drive into the USB port the CPU utilization dropped down between 1 - 2%.

BTW, I also made sure the laptop is clean from any and all dust. I blew it out with a can of air and actually disassembled the laptop and cleaned out the inside. I was thinking that it might be heat related but am satisfied that is not the cause now.

I'm attaching both HJT log files and would appreciate help on... Read more

I wanted to ask because I've never used a usb thumb drive to perform a clean install before. Are you suppose to pull the thumb drive on every reboot just as you would a cd or would you just simply leave the thumb drive in the port? I have a client with a SANDisk Cruzer thumb drive that appears to be physically damaged.

I have little hope for recovering the data, but I have found at least two companies that claim to do this sort of recovery. Has anyone on here worked with a company that does this sort of recovery?

A:Solved: USB Thumb Drive has Physical Damage

Contact them, find out what service and pricing they offer. In the UK here I don't charge, I leave it to donations, but not a lot of services can afford to do this because of the equipment involved.

So, the first thing you need to know is what they can do, they may give you a quote after assessing the damage leaving you the option of deciding whether you want them to go ahead. Once again, the gear that could be involved in retrieving this data can be expensive, so don't be surprised at what they quote.

Right click the drive causing issues, Properties, AutoPlay.
Go through the drop down menu and choose "Select an action to perfrom", "Take no action".
for each of the items in the list.

This means when plugged in it will not open with anything, and you will have to go to My Computer to open it.

Stinger.exe will run from a flash drive an will seek out and find most of the more recent worms and viruses. You can find it here:

I would think for any full fledged av program you could put the exe. file on the flash drive and then install it on most any computer. Such programs as Avast, Antivir, and AVG should work in that manner.

When you eject the USB flash drive do you click the Safely Remove Icon before pulling it out? If you don't, it will have a hard time connecting next time you put it in.
If the USB Flash Drive is not recognized when you put it in, go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Device Manager are there any devices with a Yellow Flag or under Universal Serial Bus Controllers is there an Unknown Device? If so, right click it and Uninstall it, then remove the Flash Drive and restart your computer. Put the Flash drive into a different USB port. If you don't want to restart, put the USB into a different USB port and in the Device Manager, Right click Any device and choose Scan For Hardware Changes. You should get New Hardware Found.

HELP!!! I just bought a new PNY 8gb thumb drive for my Dell E6400 laptop running XP. It worked great for the first few tries. Today, every time I plug it in the USB port I keep getting "Cannot find HOnEq.Exe"
I don't know why it's not auto-playing, and allowing me to read the files I put on the thumb drive earlier. But, I can go to My Computer, and right click on the thumbdrive to view the contents. But why did it stop automatically recognize the thumbdrive and why is that warning constantly popping up. There is no virus..I scanned that. All devices appear to be working. Should I return the thumb drive and get a different brand/model? Or is there a simple fix? Also, I checked to update the driver but it said I already had the latest driver. Did something get corrupted? HELP!!!

A:PNY 8gb Thumb Drive

The most likely situation is that the thumb drive got a virus which was later removed by your antivirus or someone else's. In that case there will still be a file (probably a hidden and system file) called "Autorun.inf". If you delete that file the drive will be back to normal.

In case you don't know, to show hidden and system files go to tools>Folder options>view, check show hidden files and folders and uncheck hide protected Opperating system files.

I'd try copying the files it won't play over to the local drive. Then you can find out if it is a problem with your drive, files, or if you are just using to much RAM on other things- netbooks typically can't run tons of apps at once since they usually only come with 1-2GB

Hi Everyone,

I need your opinions on a purchase I'm planning to make soon. I'm in a bit of a fork as to what I'm going to get actually.

A thumb drive would be more portable, so to speak rather than the portable HDD.

An HDD would have way more space, however.

I will mostly use this as a portable drive, bootable with Hiren's Boot CD.

The price difference between the two items, and the two items are as follows:

1. SanDisk? Cruzer? Blade? USB flash drive 16GB - Php 1,150 - Brand New

2. Seagate FreeAgent Go? 250GB - Php 2,000 - Used - Warranty until September 2013.

A:USB Thumb Drive vs Portable HDD

I guess the question I would have is what exactly do you intend to use it for? And just how much storage space do you require?
Thumb drives are very compact and easy to setup and use.

I use both. I really like my 2.5in external drives and I think I only paid like 29.99 on the bay (made in china of course) for the last one with 80g's of space, I use it to keep all my paid for programs on and the keys as well as virus removal programs and such.

I use my thumb drive to share programs and music and such with my Nephew since if he loses it it's cheaper for me to replace and he has tested that theory.

It's 2.4 GB of something. I know I created it back when I had a different computer with W7 but I don't remember why or what I intended to use it for.

I guess an even more pressing question would be: "Should I do the same thing now that I am on a different computer"?

A:Thumb Drive Labeled: W7 ISO

It looks like the you copied the installation ISO for Win 7 onto a flash drive, so any subsequent installs would process a lot faster than running from DVD. If you are on a different computer, which OS are you running on there?

I have two thumb drives that all of the sudden stopped working. I plug them in and the computer pops up the sandisk autorun option and a window that says i have to format the drive. When I try to format it it says that the drive cant be formatted. Under the properties it has that the drive contains 0 bytes with a capacity of 0 bytes. when i click on the drive to open it normally it says insert blank disk into the drive. The thing that really confuses me is that the autorun disk still exists and functions up to the point where it loads where it flashes an error message because windows cannot access the drive. Does anyone know what the issue is here? what i could have done to cause this or how can i fix it? can i fix it at all? Any help would be great because i really need the thumb drive. Thanks a lot.

A:Corrupt Thumb Drive or something

Two drives behaving this way would make me look at the PC or Windows.

Try the drives on another PC, do they work properly?
