Fan stopped working

Q: Fan stopped working

My computer was making incredibly loud noises. I have 2 desktops and a laptop. Both the laptop and one of the older desktops I used for typing/printing only started making noises. Since the laptop is new I fixed it immediately (bought the warranty and everything). Now the older PC, I tried fixing it myself. I cleaned the fan. And it actually started working again. But now, a week after the cleaning the fan doesn't work at all. The computer has been on for 3 days and it's still working. Just out of curiosity, how long can a computer last before it dies without a CPU fan?

I'm going to buy one today though. Is it enough if I just tell them the stuff that's written on the CPU fan (CPU COOLER - DC 12V / 0.09 A - PL 50S12M) or do I have to measure it? It's around 2.5" long I think. Maybe even less. I'd appreciate any help.

update: OK for no reason whatsoever my fan seemed to have started spinning now. The only difference I noticed is the room temperature. When it wasn't spinning the room was very cold (open window all night). Now it's warmer by at least 7C and it started working for no reason. Does the room temp have anything to do with it?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

hi lost and welcome to Techspot

you obviously have an Intel because an AMD system would have shut down if the fan stopped spinning (due the the CPU overheating)

however, certain Intel systems (i'm not sure if some or all) will slow down to a crawl but will still remain on. If the fan stops spinning the HSF turns into a passive cooler, the CPU will downclock itself so that it will not overheat.

as far as what HSF you need to buy to replace it. if you're only going to replace the fan itself (which i dont recommend) then you can pretty much replace it with any 3wired 12v fan of the same size. if your going to replace thewhole HFS unit (which is what you should do) then you need to know the CPU and socket type so that it attaches correctly

Hello:
The mouse started to stray and stopped working in the middle of doing something, i.e. eBay, typing word and etc. which is very annoying and first of all, I lose all of the work done due to stopping of the mouse.

However, the mouse started working as if nothing wrong, once I restarted by 'force' restart ..... pushing the button in the middle of the PC. Otherwise, the PC is all fine and working OK.

I did apply Malwarebytes to combat the issue, however the issue does not resolve.

Any help on this would be truoly appreciated.

Thanks,

A:Mouse stopped working in the middle of working, i.e. eBay, typing word, etc.

Did you try a different mouse? If you still have the same problem with a new mouse, see if there are any drivers for the mouse from it's manufacturers web site.
Also try a Clean Boot, if that works, then add one startup item at a time till the mouse acts weird again, then you know that is the problematic program.

So one day I was using a laptop wirelessly when the internet just suddenly turned off. I checked my modem and it was working fine but when I checked my router, the lights were on but not blinking. it was just a steady light. when I checked for a wireless network the name of the network I usually use didnt show up.

I tried unplugging everything and plugging everything back in again and I tried pressing the reset button on the back of the router. Can anyone help?

Thanks so much

P.S. my router is a linksys WRT300N Wireless-N Broadband router

A:Wireless router suddenly stopped working (Lights still working though)

what devices do you have connected the router anything else wireless
make and model of the pc

does the PC work if you connect to the router by a cable ?
if not
try connecting directly to the modem and see if that works OK

we need to see some details, which will mean you need to copy to a working PC
------------------------------------------------------------------------
{run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector} Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC

http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifitools.php
Direct link to the program is here http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifi_download_redirect.php
Then run and install the program
if you get an error - You need NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

Run the program

post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

I have had a rather large problem over the last couple of days. It started earlier in the week, when one drive stopped working. Not a big problem, I've had drives fail before. 4 disks, so i can handle one less for a little while, i though. Not so though, while still waiting for my new drive, using my computer like usual (with less load on unit D) i suddenly start getting write-errors to D:, and the Intel Matrix Storage Console lists it as Stopped Working instead of Degraded. Nothing changed except for the status of the Volume, all the disks read the same as before, fully functional.

I have very little experience with these sort of matters. This is the first time I've lost a drive where i might lose data as well, and i have pretty much no idea where to go from here. I've tried to replace the faulty disk with another 500GB drive, but the RAID-setup in BIOS just tells me there isn't enough space, and the Console in Windows places the new drive as a Non-RAID drive. I can mark it as reserve, but that seems to be all i can do with it.

I'm not, hopefully, asking for miracles. I have just two things that i really need to retrieve from the Volume, my Firefox sessions (saved in a separate folder at the root of the drive), and my Thunderbird mail, (stored in their standard location, as my whole Windows-profile is on that drive). Everything else i can get again. (Well, not really, i have stuff stored up from 8-10 years back, from people who has withdrawn from t... Read more

Okay, this is the weirdest problem I've ever hard with computers. Here's what happened:

1. I had a few years old Pentium D 2,8GHz processor running on Asus P5VDC-X mobo. PQI 566MHz DDR2 and GF 7600GS 256mb PCI-E, 350W power.
2. I updated the mobo to Asus P5L-MX to support faster PCI-E cards. Everything worked fine, despite the processor ran too hot (58C on high use)
3. Because of the overheating I replaced the thermal paste but it had no effect on the temperature.
4. I thought I used too much paste so I replaced the paste again.
---
5. Bang, no video when I turn on the computer. I tried taking off everything part by part but nothing worked. It didn't work even when I only had processor and used the integrated graphics port. Tried resetting the bios too.
6. Nothing worked so I put back the old P5VDC-X and it worked like charm.
7. I thought it was logical that the problem was caused because of the mobo so I bought a new one, Asrock G31M-S.
8. No video... Did the same steps to this one too. It also had integrated gfx but it didn't work either.
9. The old P5VDC-X still works.

So I have no idea what's causing the problem. Is it the CPU? Mobo? PSU? RAM? I have no speaker on my case so I can't hear any beeps, but it won't start loading the OS from the hardrive and my USB mouse won't turn on. Tried using a differen't monitor too.

The main point is why it stopped working suddenly on new mobo's but still works with the old P5VDC-X? A... Read more

Two new motherboards tells us you made the same simple install error in both of them.
Tell us more about power supply, memory, cable.
Did you make sure the memory was correct for both new boards, and what is the memory on the old board. Would also like to know the power supply and other hard ware.
What happens with the most basic, simple install. Does everything light up?

If you used the same hard drive with the same Windows install on the two motherboards, that is the problem. Windows has detected that you have changed the motherboard and will not operate unless you reinstall Windows on the drive on each new motherboard... One install for each motherboard.
My guess is that you will be fine if you change hard drives or do reinstalls or repair installs of the Windows on the new motherboard.

I usually select files with Windows Explorer, and they open using ACDC.

When I close the last file viewed, I get this error message that says "ACDSee 7.0 Application has stopped working"Installations of this ACDC on other Windows 7 computers do not have this issue. So I need to resolve it.

Vista Ultimate 64-bit, ASUS Rampage Formula motherboard, USB mouse and keyboard connected in back ports.

Two things happened: Avira antivirus warned me of some threats which I either ignored or deleted. Windows Update had some updates ready (although I'm not sure if it updated).

I turned off my PC for a couple of hours, turned it back on and realized that my USB keyboard was not working on the password screen.

I eventually unplugged it from the back and plugged it into the front, where it worked. However, my USB mouse did not work when plugged into the second front port, nor did it work when plugged into the front port in which the keyboard worked.

I accessed System Restore using my keyboard and restored to one day previously. When it finished, both keyboard and mouse worked, although I got a pop-up message alerting me that the "drivers for your device could not be installed." When I clicked "OK," the mouse stopped working again.

I have checked BIOS and both mouse and keyboard are recognized, so it does not appear to be a hardware issue.

Hi,

I tried reconnecting , restarting PC , different USB ports and different cables . I got this error when the HDD got connected
"you need to format disc in drive <> before you can use it."

what's the problem exactly here? and what's the way to solve it , if any?
if not, is there anyway I can extract data from it to another HDD maybe?

the data amounts up to 300GB .

Thank you.

You can try cloning the drive to another with this: http://www.todo-backup.com/download/
If it doesn't work then somehow your drive has been corrupted. If that doesn't work there is one more method, but it is lengthy so post if it doesn't work.

hey i have a Sony that i reformatted a week ago. after that i kept it in my room for a couple of days because i was busy with other work. then on Thursday i finally got to turn it on and take a look at it after the reformatting.

but when i turned it on it gives me a message saying the "the hardware monitor has detected an error with the POWER SUPPLY FAN" then it says press F1 to continue or press F2 to go to setup.(BIOS)

so then i hit F2 and it got me to the BIOS setup and i went to "POWER" and then to "Hardware Monitor" then it gave me the following..

MB Temp. 34 degrees C/ 93 degrees F
CPU Temp 60 degrees C/ 140 degrees F

CPU Fan Speed 3515 RPM.
Power Fan Speed 0 RPM.

OK so thats bad because it's not working and it 0, what should i do?, i mean my computer works fine if i press F1 to continue it gets me to the desktop and then it works from there but i don't think its good.

are my temperatures OK for the CPU that i showed ,and for the MB?
or is the temperature really high?

should i buy a new Power Supply Fan? because those cost a lot.

Last week I was experimenting with ripping dvds and it was working great. However, after ripping 2 or 3 dvd's onto my backup hardrive it stopped working. It said that I needed to have a dvd player open in order to get through the encrypted dvd...so I though okay no problem, I'll just use NVDVD player like I always have. But now a message pops up telling me that the disk is encrypted and must be opened using a dvd player...even though NVDVD is just that, a dvd player. Now I have tried 3 other dvd players and none of them work. I thought maybe I lost some codecs so I downloaded the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack. This did nothing for dvds. So any idea what I'm missing ??? I plan to reformat soon, so I guess this would just be another reason to do that. Thanks!

I did an internet search for the problem and besides sites telling me to buy their fixer programme, the only sensible advice was to restore the computer to the last restore point date.

So, about a month ago after a night of gaming, I knocked my pc off as usual and went to bed. In the morning, I went to turn on my pc but there were some issues. For one, the LED around the power on button was not lit up, and the fan on my graphics card was not spinning, and so I had no display or post. After a lot of troubleshooting and unplugging and plugging things back in, i finally managed to get it up and running again.

Now, this was fine until a few days ago, where i got the BSOD and my system froze. After making sure everything was seated correctly and nothing was broken I realised there is an LED on my motherboard lit up.
I have an msi - z390 pro, and the LED is lit up on the ez debug led for the cpu.

I have repeated the cpu multiple times and have reapplied the thermal paste too, but I am unable to get any display or post, and the led is still lit up.

I am out of ideas as to what I can do, I mean, the CPU shouldn't have just died like this, when I got the BSOD, the cpu was not under heavy load or over heating so I have no clue as to what has caused this. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

As this has already been identified as a problem for many Chrome users, I can only suggest that you try and run Chrome with a minimum number of Windows open simultaneously and see if that fixes your issue. You also might want to check your RAM allocation in Task Manager when this happens to make sure you have adequate free RAM available at the time of the incident.

Just today, I started getting notification in a pop up box:

IE has stop working.

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Window will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

And this is followed by actual closing of the current program on the screen. This does not pop up on all sites...just seemingly on selected ones including on line banking, live mail and yahoo mail... to name a few. (luckily Vista Forum site is not affected)

I ran MSE twice and came up clean. No malwares. The only software I installed prior to onset of this problem was Flash player 10..which I have since deleted to no avail.

Help!!!

Well let's try this again...my last thread wasn't even centered around copying dvd's, I was just ripping them to my computer so I could put them onto my mp3 player and delete them short after. The transmission or resale of copyrighted material without permission is illegal, not the transfer of material from the owner for the owners use...but it doesn't matter, that's not what my question is about.

Any who, whenever I pop in a dvd and try to open it with NVDVD (Nvidia dvd player) it says, "This disk contains DVD content. The files may be encrypted and therefor not be playable using this player. Please switch to the DVD player to play this disk". But I've been using NVDVD to watch dvd's ever since I got the computer...so I must have lost a file or something in the copying process . I've tried other DVD players and none of them are able to play the disks. Any advice is appreciated...thanks!

I'm not sure if this is the right board to post this at.

I recently configured a router for home use using my emachines laptop (model D642). After I finished setting it up, I noticed that my Wi-fi stopped working altogether. When I open the Wi-fi launch manager, it shows a greyed out wi-fi switch which cannot be selected. Now, I can only connect to the net by connecting the laptop to the router via cable. Has anyone experienced the same thing before? What can I do to fix this, without formatting my laptop in the long run?

A:Wi-fi Stopped Working

Ummmmm! Click:
Start
Right click computer
Select manage
Click Device manager
Click network adapters
Double click the wireless card, then check out the settings and see what it says, if all settings enabled, Hav'nt got a clue!

First off, hello and thank you for your time.

Almost all of my games I try to play keep crashing into " .exe stopped working". I can run them, but about 10 minute mark (most of the time even sooner), they just crash and say that. I tried reinstalling them, different games and almost all of them do that. In some cases I just get to the menu and when I start playing they just drop. Even those that didn't do that before, I have been playing them for about a hour for example and now I can't do that. I just don't know what to do.

Thanks for any advice.

Try opening the IE without the addons.
Start->programs-.accessories->System tools->IE(No addons).
If it works fine then removed all the addons.

OK, I have just noticed that my del key no longer works, and i don't know why. I remember it working a couple days ago, but now it doesn't.

I thought it may be a keyboard issue (I have a logitech wireless keyboard & mouse) but reading the forums, another user suggested trying the on-screen keyboard to check.

I checked using the OSK, and the del key doesnt work on that either.. so I don't believe it is a keyboard or keyboard software issue..

Would anyone have any suggestions? It is not the end of the world, but it is rather annoying.. you don't realise how often you use it for things until you don't have it.

NOTE.. I restarted windows, and discovered that the Delete key DOES work at the initial login screen, but once windows has fully loaded up, it stops working.. not sure how that is relevant, but am sure it is.

Hi everyone,

One of our work machines has decided it doesn't want to use RDP. I was just going to do system restore but there are no restore points (guess I'll have to check that too).
Anyway I have tried updating RDP from the microsoft site but I get the message that the KB has already been installed. Am I able to just download the mstsc.exe file from microsoft?
Also I have tried copying my mstsc.exe file to the machine and it hasn't worked.
From the machine you can RDP out just fine. Another point to mention is that remoting to the machine with the firewall up or down is no good but I can make a connection view Teamviewer.

Any idea's?

Sean

When I press the Finish button of the the Windows XP Pro (SP1a) Automatic System Recovery (ASR) Wizard to create a backup file along with the associated diskette, I get the error message:

The files for the recovery diskette could not be created.
The operation was aborted.

This is even before ASR goes through the usual steps of checking which volumes are mounted, creating the list of what's to be backed up, and doing the backup. It's only after the backup is completed that it would ask for the diskette to put the several files on there.

The diskette drive A: is working just fine. The Accessories > System Tools > Backup utility otherwise seems to be working just fine, for example, in creating a backup of the SystemState.

But five days ago I had no problem making an ASR backup set and associated diskette! So something has changed that caused this
different result.

I emphasize that this is with XP Pro, and not Home. And it worked before.

I've found nothing relevant in the Microsoft Knowledge Base -- just one article about the same error with ASR in but that's in XP Home, which doesn't actually support ASR.

I did find one thread in microsoft.public.windowsxp.security_admin about the same error with XP Pro, but the only suggestion there concerned moving the pagefile back to the system drive C:. My pagefile is already on C: and has always been there.

I can tell you this: I had installed Roxio Drag-to-Disk (formerly known as DirectCD) yesterday ... Read more

What happened was this: I loaned my computer to a freind and told him, "Don't install anything without checking with me first!" He did, for about half the stuff I took off after I got it back.

And my alt-tab has stopped working. The thing is, it works fine for the other profile on the computer. I'm assuming the problem is a registry setting somewhere. I looked and compared but I couldn't find anything out of line. So now I'm at a loss. I know I missed something somewhere... Oh, and I'm using WinXP SP1 on a Compaq Presario 2100, which I update on a regular basis.

(This is a loptop I use as a "loaner," not my good one with all my personal stuff on it, by the way. Maybe I should get a copy of Norton Ghost before loaning it out again...?)

Any help would be appreciated. Preferably before I rip the rest of my hair out...

Hi Duchess,

My name is Mekh and I work for the Social Media and Community Team at Dell. Other than the two options you have mentioned, one other way is to Restore IE to Default Settings.
Check the below KB article how how to reset IE.
Internet Explorer - Reset

Hope this helps.

Running a Win2000 machine - following a Memory Dump, my network card quit.
Installed a new card, reloaded drivers and ran RegClean. My network card came back OK - email and HTTP working fine but I cannot FTP to any of the sites I maintain. As soon as I try to connect I get a connection refused on Port 21. I normally use AceFTP but I've also tried SmartFTP and others and get the same result. With the free ftpcomm program I can get to the remote site and download a file but cannot upload back to the site. I tried a command line FTP and tried to send a "bin" file with hash marks set and got a connection refused there as well. RegClean does show some FTP entries such as: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\sfFTPLib.FTPConnectionInfo\CLSID]@="{FBF8CDD4-BDD5-4B31-8890-AAC1DAB97BB4}"

I'm afraid if I reverse the RegClean work that I might lose the network capability altogether again.

Any ideas (please)??

TIA

Art

What kind of a software firewall do you use? Any chance it is a "user friendly" program like Zone Alarm or something Norton? Try disabling.

New behavior on new Vista HP 64bit installation. Was working fine 4 days ago; had been shut down until last evening. Have installed minimum additional apps, all reportedly 64bit compliant.
IE 8 message when starting IE - "Last browsing session closed unexpectedly, Restore previous session or open homepage?" Either choice results in "IE has stopped working, Windows checking for solution"... "A problem caused IE to close, Windows will close program and notify you if solution". IE closes, no solution found. Have tried disabling add-ons, have reset IE settings to default, have disabled McAfee internet security. Have run antivirus scans, malware scans (all clean), my System Restore points were (unknowingly) turned off so my most recent restore point is from last evening, AFTER the problem began. What next? I'm at the point where I COULD run clean install of Vista HP.

before you nuke this OS why not try a system file check. it verifies and reapir system files. you run it by start>search>type cmd> right click run as admin>type sfc /scannow

This morning IE has stopped working for no apparent reason. I can go to my favorites and go on line but cannot go to my home page. I cannot go anywhere from a search engine because IE has stopped woorking. Is there a way to fix this. My other computer is fine so it is not a server problem.

If you're still using the same version that ships with Windows 7, updating it to the latest version may fix it:

I was leaving my USB hub hooked up all the time. Everything worked fine and then suddenly the hub wouldn't work anymore. It works on every system I try it on except this one, including laptops and my husband's system.

If I plug directly into the system USB connection it works just fine so I'm thinking that I have a corrupt or missing driver here.

Any suggestions or ideas?

Thx,

When I try to play an *.mpg file in Win Media Player I get a small message at the bottom of the screen saying that it is trying to locate a codec server. If I am off line at the time then that is the end of it, but of course the *.mpg file never plays. If I am on line it seems to find some sort of site, then the word ""Error"" flashes by and the file begins, but it is only sound.........no picture at all.
This just occured a few minutes ago........(rebooting didn't help) prior to that, I had no trouble playing these files.
