Q: New hard drive giving me problems

I have just installed a new hard drive and it is detected on the BIOS but...

When I go to select it in My Computer, it either stops the PC responding or asks me to format it. I go to format the drive and it tells me it could not complete. I've just run chkdisk and...

File record segmants: 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 128, 256, 6984-6988, 9092, 9208-9217, 9224, 9232, 9233, 9344, 9364, 9480-9486 (and a hell of a lot more) are unreadable

I am running XP home. It seems to take a very long time to startup as well, a VERY long time in comparison to before.

Does anyone know what the problem could be or a way to fix it?

**Edit- Since postin this it has suddenly decided to work. If anyone has this problem, Just stick with it and restart. After a few goes it'll decide to work...it did for me!**

I got myself a new Western Digital 120 gig hard drive. Plugged it in, computer recognized it as the new master. Went about installing WIN XP, when we got to the Windows is starting screen, now the new hard drive cannot be detected. What is going on? Anybody help me?

I have two hard drives in my computer, 1. 500gb for my windows OS and 2. 1tb for my data. I today backup all my data to my terabyte hdd to reload windows. So I have a fresh copy of windows, great. But my second HDD, the terabyte, won't show up. I've tried swapping cables, turning it off for an hour to cool, blah blah. Nothing.

What's interesting is, 50% of the time I boot my computer and go into my bios it will see the terabyte drive. The other 50% it wont. I've gotten windows to see the drive once or twice, but when I try to access the drive, Windows Explorer freezes.

So heres my question. To me, this looks like a physical problem. Now I have a lot of important data on my terabyte drive. Are there any ways to retrieve my data? Even if it means replacing parts on the HDD itself?

Try going in with a live Linux disc. Most mainstream distributions handle NTFS, so if it can be mounted it can read/write the drive. Also, you could be able to do an integrity check to make sure there isn't a physical problem.

the fisrt time i check i was down to [238] i thing that is normal .
then i installed microsoft works suite 2006 .
then my epson printer .
then my wire less key board ..
now all i have left is [188] of free space .
my average score is 3.7.

Okay, to begin. I have a Toshiba Satellite A665D-S6091. I had heard after I bought the computer that it had an overheating problem. It became apparently clear to me that this was true when the computer began blue screening and shutting down. So I decided to be more careful with the computer, I wouldn't leave it on for long, I only placed it on tables and other hard surfaces, and I lowered the energy settings. I thought that this had worked until a few days ago when a slew of error messages began popping up on my screen. To begin with a lovely error message that read: "Windows detected a hard disk problem. Back up your files to prevent information loss, and then contact the computer manufacturer to determine if you need to repair or replace the disk." Then I got locked out of my cd drive and it wouldn't open. THEN I opened my C: drive to find (for the first time) a new folder entitled: 069a303672da7fdf5d3dbab42a0532 . So like any normal person who knows next to nothing about computers, I turned off the laptop, unplugged it, and took out the battery for about 10 minutes. When I put everything back together and started it up again it asked if I wanted to start windows normally, to which I clicked "Start windows normally" and it came up with another message, white text on black background it read: "Checking file system on C: The type of the file system is NTFS. Hey all, i screwed up big. I have a 120 GB Maxtor Drive (6Y120P0) as a second drive used just for storage. I let it get too full. I think it got to 90% full. A big No No i know. I deleted as much as i could that it would let me. It was giving me all sorts of I/O Device Errors and was running real slow. I scanned the drive and defragmented it.

i bought an External Drive to copy everything over but with a lot of files(including my entire family picture album of my twins) it gives me the following error when i try to copy or access a file...F:\(name of directory) is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

Is there any software i can run to fix this? Any help would be very much appreciated. I have a lot of things backed up on DVDs but not all of it.

on a pc with xp, i got the full message....i just burned and or deleted 27 full albums (all at 192 bit rate or above--most at 320)and have less hard drive space from when i started.....i'm like what is going on......you can see in the properties of the folder that i have deleted 3 gigs at least.....funny thing is also....there were over 10 gigs free 2 days ago and not much downloading going on......nortons did not find a virus......HELP!!!!!!!!

i have a partitioned hard drive of which contains C: and D:

D: is the one i am having problems with. all it contains is 'my documents and settings' but there is nothing in them (with the exception of the stuff windows wont let me delete)

when i right click on the drive in my computer it says 24GB has been used when i know for a fact that only 568MB has been used!

I have tries error check, virus scanning with ESET anti-virus, CCleaner and there are no hidden files or folders

my question is how can i either: move my documents and setting to the C: drive (like it should be) and then be able to delete the D: partition

or do something to the D: partition that will get my space back that i so desperately need!

please help me!

I am having trouble with my DVD RAM Drive . On inserting a recorded DVD into the drive the drive fails to read the contents on the disc and just displays a blank window. I thought something was wrong with the drive so i changed it but the problem still persisted. To top it all on inserting the same DVD in a different computer the contents are read and displayed perfectly. I am having trouble figuring out what could be wrong. Please Help.

I am using a Computer with a Pentium 4 1.5Ghz Processor and the system has Windows XP Professional Edition Service Pack 2 installed on it.

PS: Virus scans seem to yield no viruses

I have been getting the BSOD, constantly sometimes once a week, or times once or twice a day, I have updated my Nvida gefore grafics cards recently as well, because of another error code from the BSOD saying there was a problem there. But now i have the erro code at file

I have:

Note on 80gb HD
my 80gb is the one having the Windows OS and does not report any errors in the event log.

Note on 500gb HD
i think my 500gb has failed
sometimes it does not show up in the bios. a controller issue i presume.
but when it does get detected and i run SeaTools for Windows, the 500gb will pass these tests:
1. SMART - Pass 1/15/2012 03:52:46
2. Long DST - Pass 1/15/2012 03:55:29
The event log would show same errors as it does for the 1000gb (below) so i have just disconnected it for now.

Note on 1000gb HD
but my issue here is with the 1000gb which is even more weird.
this is what happened on Friday the 13th after midnight:

A:Hard disks passing SMART tests but still giving problems

In my experience i hear clicking sound with my external usb hdd, when it has problem getting enough power (too many devices installed and with lower power supply rating 300W). Have you tried dis/reconnecting the data and power cable of your hdd or reseting BIOS setting to default?

EDIT: ive tried the troubleshoot. it comes up with nothing. it doesnt play dvds or dvd-roms. When i try opening the files it comes up as empty
 

A:My E drive is giving me problems. take a minute to read.

In device manager uninstall the IDE channel that the DVD is on then reboot. windows will automatically reinstall the IDE channel and the drive on boot up.

Hi,

I am in the process of doing a clean re-install of Windows XP for Home on my PC. I have 3 hard drives:

c: 200gb Maxtor SATA drive - bootable with Windows XP (existing Windows install)
d: 20gb Maxtor IDE drive - non bootable data drive
g: 160gb Maxtor IDE drive - bootable with the clean install of Windows XP for home on it

Windows is not seeing all the sizes quite right yet but I will tackle that when I have solved this major problem that follows:

If I boot from the C drive - I have no problems at all. Windows will see all the different drives as it should do, I can access them all and they all work fine.

When I come to boot the clean install on drive G windows changes the drive letters - G becomes C, D remains as D but the 200gb Maxtor SATA drive isn't seen at all and might as well not exist.

Disk Management within Windows is no help as it can't see the drive, Maxtor software MaxBlast 4 is also no help as it can't see the drive on this install either.

I have checked and rechecked the BIOS but have pretty much discounted any issues here as it clearly shows all 3 drives and all 3 drives are listed on boot up. It's just when Windows kicks in that I have the problem.

I guess it's a simple setting somewhere, but I am pulling out what little hair I have left trying to think what it is - so any ideas would be very gratefully received.

A:Hard Drive Bootup Problems, Help required - Windows not seeing new hard drive Options

Hi
This is what I would do to enhance performance and storage strategy:

1. Use the 20g for the os and housekeeping utes such as av, spyware, etc only, nothing else goes on that drive.
2. Use the 160g for apps installs.
3. Use the 200g for data.

This might get you past the bios/firmware/os/drive letter issue and make better use of the drives. The 20 isn't really good for storage anymore, but would be great for an os/system ute drive. It's performance is less than the other drives, but that's ok, most of the os will stay in ram anyway after boot, you won't make any real diff having a faster os drive.
You might want to place a pagefile on each drive so pageing can occur concurrently too.

I REALLY hope someone out there can help me with this!

I have a failed hard drive/ stuffed partion, and i DESPERATELY need the data from it!

A computer was brought into me with two hard drives. The owner asked me to set up a duel boot with vista and XP on the first hard drive, and to leave the second hard drive alone (its his backup drive with all his photos, movies etc) I was working away as per usual, when i noticed the second hard drive was no longer coming up in Windows Explorer. Well it was, but not correctly. whenever i clicked on it it said 'would you liket to format the drive?' obviously, i didnt want to do that.

I ran Partition Magic 8.0 which showed the drive was only 8Gigs (it should have been 1T or 1000Gigs) Partition Magic also said there was a problem with the drive and offered to fix it. I agreed, however there was no change.

I've run a number of programs to try and fix the drive:
Acronis Disk Director Server 10.0
Partition Table Doctor 3.5 Demo
Dtidata Partition Repair Tool
MHDD
Recover My Files v3.98
FileScavenger.

However, all the partition repairers claim that the drive is only 8 Gigs, and they can go no further. All the File Recovery Programs will only scan for 8 Gigs, and thus, i can not recover my clients precious photos and videos.

The BIOS comes up as recognizing the drive as 33Gigs?

I really REALLY need the data from this drive! Does anyone know how to fix my problem?

I've used ZAR to recover files from a RAID box that seemed to have been corrupted due to a bad power supply.

You might check it out. It's free. Meaning it will only allow you to recover so many files at a time. I bought it, and like it.

They have a forum that is monitored quite often, from the developer too.

I am building a new computer from scratch. It is has an Intel Motherboard, 1.8Ghz Pentium 4 Processor, 2 IDE Ports + 1 for the floppy drive, I have 4 External 5-1/4" slots, 2 External 3-1/2" slots and 3 internal 3-1/2" slots for hard drives. Here are my problems.

I had a Compaq Presario with a 5-1/4", 12gig Hard Drive. That motherboard went bad so I decided to build my own computer from scratch and everything was going fine until now. I took the 5-1/4" hard drive out and put it into my new case. It had Windows 98 on it and so I upgraded to Windows XP Professional. That solved many of my problems but I am still stuck with the following problems.

1. My Hard Drive Light on my Case which is suppose to light up when my hard drive is active, doesn't work. I can see a little green light on my hard drive itself light up but not on the front of the case where it is suppose to.

2. I decided that the 12Gig hard drive from my old system is a little too slow, so I bought a 40Gig, 7200 rpm Western Digital Caviar Drive. It is a 3-1/2" drive which I put into one of those internal drive bays. When I boot up, I go to CMOS by pressing F2 and then I go and see that the computer is recognizing it and it is. My problem is when I go to Windows and to "My Computer", it isn't there. I am sure it is something small that I am overlooking but I am new to this. Do not put both hard drives on the same string as the controller will default to the lowest speed hard drive. In fact I would think about getting rid of the old drive entirely as its age means that it should be very slow.

Have you tried turning the led HD connector to the motherboard over?

You can get an Promise PCI controller card that will allow you to add some extra IDE ports. The controller will show the devices on it to be D0, D1, D2 etc. It looks like a SCSI device to the system but hooks up IDE devices.

You need to FDISK and format a new hard drive before windows can see it.

Hey Guys, first things first. I had an old hard drive from a crapped out laptop. My uncle gave me an USB Hard drive converter(unsure on it's brand, after it worked i threw out the box). Problem is that I used it several times between a mac and a pc(school and home computer) and now it give me an I/o error when I try to copy stuff and says it can't find the item when I try to delete something. I tried reformatting(all this is on a PC BTW). I tried plugging it into a mac at school, but it wouldn't show up as connected.

I just realised that I had a driver cd for it, but I have lost it and cannot find it(too many CD's to keep track of, lol), I was wondering if there was anything I could do to fix this problem. It is a fujitsu, 30 GB hard drive(though it when I was using it, it showed as a 20 GB) I would prefer not to have to buy a new adapter or hard drive. I would just like to use this, to store all my music on, because the hard-drive on this computer(it's only 40GB getting a new one soon) is getting cluttered with music.
Now for my second problem, which isn't really my problem at all, but I digress. My friend was using her microphone(on an XP Home) and half way through her conversation it cut out. I have got her to check all her sound settings, no low sound settings on her computer. She has tried recording messages but nothing happens as if a microphone is not plugged in. The particulars are regarding a 32 bit version of Vista Home Basic Edition on an Everex laptop. It began giving startup error messages about an imminent hard drive failure months ago, requesting F1 to continue. Eventually the messages began to appear while the PC was running. The user disabled the msgs and the laptop continued to function for months, without any apparent problem beyond the boot msg.

I ran chkdsk 3 times in a row and saw the exact same named cluster errors every time, although the utility said after each pass that they'd been repaired. Then I ran the HDAT2 utility. It ran for about 7 hours, and it also said that it had repaired clusters. Subsequent boots however. always gave the same imminent HDD failure msg, press F1, etc....

Although it's an Everex laptop, I have no Everex CD, so I tried to boot using a 32 bit Dell Vista Home disk. I hear a lot of noises. But I never get a thing to pop up on the screen. Same non-result with a Spotmau Bootsuite CD. The only thing I got to work on a disk was the one with the HDAT2 utility. So I put the Vista disk in a disk reader which plugs into a USB port. (It's a Targas DVD-ROM reader). I wasn't sure just how to change the boot order in setup to access the disk in the reader so I simply put the hard drive last. Didn't do a thing - it just attempted to boot from the HDD. By this time it was blue screening with an unmountable boot volume, so I put another hard drive in the laptop. I have been having a running battle with something called E2Give for the past several weeks. I have used PC-cillin and it cannot get rid of all of it. I also have used AdAware and Spybot, to no avail. I would appreciate any help, as I am getting tired of the Warning window popping up every time I go to open a program from the desktop. I have searched and found some threads about this already, and have tried some of the solutions, but got concerned when the instructions got very specific to individual files on the submitter's computer, and the advisor said to be very careful. i called technical support and told them my router keeps timing out after 5 minutes. I only can access the setup page. I don't know what the problem could be. This is my new replacement product and still it's doing what the first one did. what else can i expect from linksys!!

does anyone have any knowledge on this issue? I'd really appreciate it if someone can just list the settings that should be selected. I feel like throwing it in the closet along with my other junk.

i've installed vista ultimate 64 on my computer. and ever since it either blue screens driver error which i have updated my graphics card. still blue screens

Hi ISHY,

Have you installed the latest chipset drivers and BIOS for your motherboard yet? This can sometime cause problems like this.

Is your power supply powerful enough to handle the load of your computer? Usually 500 to 600 watts is good.

Double check to see if the computer may be overheating? Usually by leaving the side of the case open temporarily as a test for maximum airflow. Clean and blow out any dust and cobwebs found.

Hello,

After trying to copy a image for school I get a message from ESET saying it just blocked a trojan. In the next second I get maybe 50 error-messages, the background turns black, all my shortcuts dissapears and the computer reboots. This happened after rebooting again. Now the system is more stable, but extremely slow and I get messages about hard drive and RAM failiure (I could not start the task manager before, but now it works).
Anyways, I ran some malware-removal tool and found 2 trojans, but before beeing able to remove them, the system crashed.

So I need some help here...

I took the hard drive (a barracuda 7200.7 30 gig by seagate) out of my dell Pc when I got this laptop for Christamas(wife). I was told that I could take the hard drive out put it in an external hard drive case. I did so, however, it recognizes it as Mass storage device/ then it says the new hardware is installed and ready to use/ then it says there was a problem during install and the hardware my not work. I have been through MS Support /Seagate/ support/ Gateway support. Please I have so much data on the drive it is extremely important. Any help would be incredible!!!!!!! Thanks

I recently noticed that the system was trying to do 7 updates every day at closedown, and found that update was giving a return code of 800736b3.

I have run SURT several times, and it doesn't seem to give any results (or should I be looking somewhere else?).

I ran sfc /scannow and extracted the results and they are in sfcdetails.txt (attached). SFC said there were some files it couldn't fix, even though sfcdetails.txt says it has fixed all of them.

CBS.zip is much too big to upload using the paperclip - is there another way?

I tried restoring to an earlier restore point, and unfortunately all the attempted updates have flushed my list of restore points - and the oldest few all give me a return code of x00000022.

Not sure if this is one problem or two...! I am reluctant to do a System Recovery as it sounds pretty drastic - help would be much appreciated!

PS Is any more info required?

...which are caused by an MS update which they messed up the file-coding on and may get around to fixing sometime.
It's not critical, but you could get rid of it by uninstalling KB3022345 and/or KB3068708 and hiding the latter when it reappers in your offered updates list.

Please post the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log and C:\Windows\Logs\CheckSUR.Persist.log files.

Hi, i have some problem with my IE 7 recently.
When i surf some sites, mostly hotmail. I always get the message "object moved here". So when i click on a page, it will direct me to a page that writes "object moved here" and then i'll need to click on the word "here" before i can access my page.

Recently, i cant seem to see all the images and yes, i can't see all the smilies and icons on the post thread now, which is wierd and i get this message when i'm surfing the net at times:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address

which i find it wierd because my messenger is still able to connect and my brother's computer which uses the same connection is also able to connect but my internet just doesn't seem to be able display the webpage.

A:IE 7 giving problems

Hi bearbear,

please try running IE7 without addons to see if the same happens:

- Click Start -> Run -> type:
iexplore -extoff
- Click OK
- Test with a few sites to see it the same problem occurs...please bear in mind that when you run IE with no addons, some website will cease to work as normal if they depend on certain addons. Ignore any new problems, just try to concentrate on the original issue and post back your findings please.

If that doesn't give any results, it may be an idea to temporary disable your firewall for a little bit and run IE in its normal mode. Some firewalls include features which affect how webpages load and are displayed so it could be a configuration problem. Remember to re-enable your firewall when you have finished testing.

Have you previously upgraded from IE6 to version 7? If yes, did these problem used to happen previously?

I recently installed a plug and play Ethernet adapter into my pc which is Win7. I am trying to LAN with a windows XP pc (which previously worked with my onboard adapter).

When I view the status of the Local area connection, it shows that there are packets being sent and received to and from both pcs. But I CANNOT see the win XP pc in my network as I am not on the existing network with it?

can you ping the other pc?
is firewall configured and network detection and file sharing on?

Target Read Test and SMART Short Self Test. How serious are these? I put in Windows 10 last week.

Don't ask me how, but I recently got a virus (scit.exe) on my system. after a bit of searching online I found an anti-viral software called reg-run. Brilliant! Got rid of virus very efficiently. So efficiently that it got rid of a few important things with it. Along with a few files (no getting those back), I also have the following problems I need help with:
- My Computer shows no Hard Drives
- Typing C:/ in the address bar works fine but D:/ (my CD drive) does nothing (Please Insert Disc) *
- Inbuilt Search is gone but Google Desktop is ok
- Run is gone but is there in task manager. D:/ still doesnt work
- No Autorun for CDs
- No Ms Word but Ms Excel is still there
- It wont read CDs at all unless its a game that was installed already, in which case it works fine. *
- And my SoundCard isn't working. Stac97.sys Sigma Tel C-Major or something is gone too!

The ones with the * are big problems, I've tried System Restore and I've had as much luck as, well, something without very much luck.

Please help me! Even if you know a solution to one problem!

I got a new hard drive earlier since my C drive was full, however the new drive hasn't helped a whole lot. Basically my problem with it is that if I attempt to do a lot of stuff with it (and by a lot it varies from what I do so I can't be more specific) it will freeze my whole computer or else it will eventually just randomly disappear. I'm not 100% sure on the specifics of it, but if needed I can find somewhere with the listed information about it I'm sure, but I think it's a Seagate, but could be wrong.

Moved the Os to it?
Installed it as a slave?
Used it to move files from the C drive?
"Do a lot of stuff" means what? I'm sure you can be very specific.
Look in Control Panel/Admin Tools/Event Viewer under System and Application and see if any errors are related to this disk or your original disk.

Hey guys/girls I seem to be having a little problem (well actually its a big problem) with one of my hard drives. Ii is a 10 giger and I have been using it for about a year now. About 3 months ago I went to open it (I store all my music in there) and it showed like there was nothing in there however it still showed that 8 gigs had been used up ( or whatever the ratio was). I rebooted my comp but when it came back on and I tried to open it again, this time it said : drive E has not been formated would you like to reformat . I chose no at first and tried a whole bunch of programs to restore the music that I knew was still hiding, the best I could do was recover bits and pieces of the 3000+ songs in there. I decided that I was screwed and just hit yes to reformat. I used it again for about 3 months (don't ask me why I even risked it) and again today when I went to open it, it did the same would you like to reformat thing. I did notice that while all my other drives (when everything is working right) say: local disk c: or local disk d:, my E drive reads LOCIL disk e:, now again this is when it is working properly. Now that it gives me the reformat option, ALL my drives say: local disk, including E. Ok now that my long story is over, CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP ME. Why would my drive be named like that then how could it rename its self? Anything anyone can do would be highly appreciated. Thanks a lot guys/girls.

last nite I heard a strange sound coming from my hard drive. I ran scandisk ( thorough) and it found a few things and fix them. Then I tried to run Defrag. Every time I start it, it stops and says there are errors on my hard drive, run scandisk to fix them and then run defrag again.

I did that twice and cant get defrag to run.

In an attempt to recover some files from a broken computer, I took out the hardrive and put it into another computer, attached the appropriate cables and sorted out the master/slave pins as directed by the diagrams on the hard drives themselves. However, when I booted the computer up it took a while for the moniter to turn on, which is unusual for that computer, and when it did load up all that appeared on the screen was the desktop background, the language toolbar and a shortcut to a word document (entitled "New Document" or something like that which won't load up.
I then went back to the original setup w/o the slave, but the same thing happened.
So, I swapped the hard drives around so the master goes to a different plug on the mother board, via the ribbon cables, and the slave goes to where the master was connected as well as changing the pin on the master (Yes, there's only one pin on the master, is that right?) the monitor won't turn on at all now.
Sorry, if it's long winded and rather vague but I don't really know about these kind of things.

I don't really know much at all about switching those jumpers around with the whole "master" and "slave" thing. But I've used 2 hard drives in my computer before now. And I didn't even move the jumpers at all. I just went into the boot options in the bios and made it boot from whichever disk I wanted. You could try booting from the hard disk that works. If the disk that you're wanting to retrieve information from is formatted in NTFS, then it should read it fine

Problem I ran PC-Doctor and got the error HD521-2W
Now I've searched multiple forums and it seems most people reply back "OH NO YOU BETTER BACKUP ITS GOING TO CRASH", while I'm suspecting it might, I just got it this year, and I'm guessing I should take caution either way.

PC-Doctor basically had said my Maxtor drive failed the:
SMART Short-Self test -- HD521-2W
Hard Drive Surface Scan Test -- HD535-2W
I tried my arms at fixing and getting down to it, before I get down to it here are some of my security programs, just to keep in mind

Window Washer - usually bleach deleted files
Zone Alarm - Internet Suite

After getting that error, I decided to run the CHKDSK and got this:

A:Some Hard-Drive Problems with XP

You have to tell chkdsk to fix the errors with what is called a switch here are the commands;
Step One: Click Start, select Run
Step Two: In the box, type cmd
Step Three: Click Ok
Step Four: Run the chkdsk utility by typing in the following command:
chkdsk c:

use this one for sure -->> chkdsk c: /f /r
NOTE: The /f command automatically fixes any errors encountered, the /r command locates bad sectors and recovers readable information.
NOTE: I am also assuming the drive you wish to check is the C: drive.
Step Five: A reboot is normally required for the chkdsk program to lock the disk and run correctly (this is typical on machines that have only one volume), so simply restart the computer and chkdsk will run automatically. When it's finished, (This process can take quite a while depending on the size of your disk, etc.), it will boot back to normal Windows.

I have a couple of questions and problems that i hope you guys will be able to answer.
First, If you back up your hard drives, where do you put the file that contains the drives because if your hard drive crashes won't those files go with the hard drive no matter were you locate the back up files.
Second, My computer was fine a week ago. It was running fast showing no problems, but in the past couple of days I have been downloading files like crazy games, virus protectors, nero, tools, and other stuff. The computer started to slow down. So I took a day to scan the computer and delete the files. I have four different scanners that I use to scan. Mcafee, Super Antispyware free edition, A-squared Anti-Malware, active panda 2, and one other that is online. I didn't find anything. I then used CCleaner to make sure the recyle bin was clean. Once I did all of this the computers didn't get better it continued to drop in speed. One day later it takes about 1 to 2 minutes to load up the password enter box. Then about 1 to 2 minutes to pop the applications up. I know I didn't touch any important files because I have cleaned the computer like this once or twice and got it to run very fast again. Once the computer had loaded the applications take forever to run and get going. I will open my PC pitstop Optimize and it will open, but open all white and then go unresponsive. Same for CDBurnerXp. Hello all,

First off I confess to being a complete newbie - have used pc's for years, no problems installing PCIs etc....but I recently purchased a new hard drive, which arrived today. I had hoped to use it as a second drive, but whenever I connected it the PC would never porogress beyond the startup page )the page that does a memory check, press del to enter setup, esc to slip memory test etc). so I soon abandoned the second hard drive idea.

Now i want to use the new drive as my only hard drive - i'm not really bothered about copying any of the files from what will be muy old hasrd drive - except xp, which I have a copy of. Can someone please please tell me how I can get my copy of XP onto what I assume is a totally black new hard drive? This has been driving me crazy, I really need this new hard drive - my old one is 20gb, so you can imagine i'm keen to dispose of it, perhaps place it in a museum or something

Can someone please help me out? This seems a friendly community and I will be eternally grateful to anyone who can figure this out for me!!!

A:Hard drive problems.

Well, to get your drive working without reformatting, is to set the "Jumpers". If you look at the drive, you should see a small plastic clip on a set of pins. This piece of plastic tells the drive to be either "Master", "Slave", or "Cable Select". I am assuming that the drive you have in there currently is set to "Master". IF you set the jumper on the new drive to "Slave", it will go past your boot order and work fine. There is a diagram on the Hard Drives Information sticker. Good luck.
