I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, guys,

My Mako DT3500 Smart Card Reader gives me a red light and my Encore Pro won't recognize it. The error on load up was: 'start Service ScardSvr failed.

It might be useful to know that my son, who is an avid gamer, streamlined my computer just before he went back to University. I suspect he may have turned off a service, but I don' know how to fix it. I'm using Win xp and my Encore Pro program is working OK, meaning my SQL server appears to be functional.

2 weeks ago i bought an XPS M1710 laptop off Ebay with a faulty gfx card quite cheaply with the intention of swapping out the card in my I9400 . The card is a GF 7900GTX with 512mb ram ,now the 7 series of laptop cards are notorious for failing due to heat , so after a little research on the matter it appearred there was a little trick you could perform to get these cards working
Well i thought i had got nothing to lose so why not give it ago, heres how

1: remove card from laptop
2: remove the heatsink and backing plate by undoing the retaining screws and gently prising apart
3: remove all traces of thermal paste from gfx and ram chips using 99% rubbing alcohol
4: Place in a pre heated (150 degrees C) oven , on a stiff piece of card for 3 mins only per side ( 6 mins total)
5: turn oven off and leave oven door half open (or half closed) for 30 mins
6: refit heatsink, backing plate and thermal paste, i used as5 and replace in laptop

7: the test , i used prime95 to stress the card + a few swear words thrown in to make it more stressed and it passed

So i was sceptical at first thinking what a stupid thing to do, but it works
The laptop has been running now for 78 hrs continuos with no probs, the temp is 43 degrees C using I8Kgui fan controller
so if anyone wants to try this method, i say give it ago you have nothing to lose

Remove the card? Do both laptops have an mxm? I'm curious about this. Most laptops tend to have the darn thing soldered in or part of the mobo. Also, why are you sticking it in an oven >_>

Two days ago my hard-drive went kaput for one reason and other. As I tried starting it, I did so by safe mode and it froze at mup.sys; Then, scouring the internet, I came across the idea to repair windows and when doing so encountered
"The file 'asms' on Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 1 is needed. Type the path...(drop down menu) H:/I386"Click to expand...

I did some more googling and encountered a post by our quite helpful moderator Elvandil at this link
link

Reading that, I attempted to delete the aforementioned items. None of them seemed to be there. Now I'm presented with the misfortune of needing to trouble the knowledgeable and helpful people of techguy for assistance.

Would anybody have insights as to why I'm receiving these issues when trying to repair my install? I use KeyPass and all my generated passwords are on there...I'd be devastated if I wasn't able to recover them.

I sincerely appreciate the help.

Thought it would be cool to do, since some software allows you to encrypt data and use a smart card to unlock data. Tried finding out if it was possible to turn an SD card into a smart card, but couldn't find anything. That makes me think there isn't a way, but thought I would ask anyways. Seems like there would be some software to do this, but I didn't find anything.

Ok I have found another problem. I had my computer worked on and he re-installed windows xp. Before it was worked on I was able to insert my memory card from my digital camera ( I don't have the plug for the camera to upload pictures that way) and Nero always popped up. I think it was drive E. Now nothing is happening when I insert the memory card. I am able to use my external hard drive and it comes up as drive E. I believe my laptop has a built in smart card, but it is not showing.

I believe you may have to reinstall the drivers.

First look in Device Manager with your camera plugged in
and see if there are any yellow exclamation symbols there.

May only be necessary to uninstall and reboot.

I have to log off now, hope someone else can help if OP replies.

This isn't really a driver issue but more of a some help with local policy / permissions (I think).

I have just put a new Windows 7 PC on our domain and I am having a few troubles getting the Gemalto Smart card to work as a user. This card has the Gemplus esigner which lets us authenticate to connect back to our bank for secure banking.

Basically this PC is in a domain which locks the desktop and programs down so a user cannot access Programs etc. We then place an RDP icon in the start menu and they access their programs via RDP into a terminal server. Only a few programs are run locally on the PC.

When we install the Gemalto software on an XP machine we set permissions on the installation folder for everyone to have read / write access along with the registry key and this works fine an allows users to be able to use this on the local PC.

With Win7 I have tried this but I keep getting "Cannot fine the certificate store" error ? however this works as administrator (local PC) which leads me to a permissions thing or a domain setting.

I can insert the smart card and manually import the certificate which reports sucessfull yet the same error occurs.

Has anyone else has this issue or can anyone point me in the right direction?
Cheers

A:Gemalto Smart Card

Your issue may be a product of a feature called UAC (User Account Control) settings. They can be adjusted locally in the control panel under user accounts. However in a domain environment the UAC settings may be dictated by a Group Policy setting. Something perhaps to try would be to have the domain administrator log on to the Win 7 machine with his credentials and see if you still have the problem with the Certifcate, if that's successful than he will probably know how to fix it on the local machine. Not sure this will help, but I thought I would throw it out there and perhaps someone else may have another idea.

Hi all,

I've installed Windows 7, and had a problem using smart cards with the new OS.

I installed the drivers for my smart card reader (USB) from the manufacturer's website, and they installed fine.
Then when I go to plug in my reader, it says "Device driver software was not successfully installed" and it then says that the reader is correctly installed, but "Smart Card X No Driver found".

So I tried communicating with the reader and inserted card, and the communications is fine. So my only real issue is that every time i plug in my reader, it prompts me with "Not successfully installed" despite the fact that I've correctly installed the drivers.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Does Microsoft have a set of DLL or a way to access smart cards from a web page. Currently we have to use Java appelet in order to get at the smart card and be able to authenticate a real digital signature.  I would think with how highly used smart

I have had a problem getting a SanDisk SD 64 meg card back in action after deleting a bunch of files on it. I use it only for image work, and read it in a SanDiak 6 in 1 reader, which works fine with other cards - in the same slot. My system tells me it is write protected, and I cannot even re-format it.

I spent severl hours searching through two XP books and on the machine trying to get anything on write protection, and how to cancel it. I have no idea how it happened, as all I did was delete image files (jpg's).

Any help will be appreciated, as I really want to put this disk back in action, not that I have a new digital camera. How to I return this disk to writable status?

The smartcard management software I have is trying to authenticate a password to allow me to edit/move/delete the certificates

I dont have the passwords, I'm not interested in the certificates, I just need to blank the cards.

Does anyone know of software that would delete the certificates or format the card?

Anyone? Or does anyone know a site to ask about this on?

Hi Folks

I have recently upgraded from Me to XP - with no regrets at all. However there is one piece of equipment I have that simply will not work (the XP installation report DID tell me about this!)

I have a USB Smart/Flash Combi Card reader that I use in the main for bringing pictures in from my digital camera (which, although very good, doesn't use the USB port - it uses either Smart media or - you've guessed - the serial port (aaaarrrrgggghhhhh). Hence the purchase of a seperate USB Card reader.

Now as I see it I have 2 options;

1 - upgrade the USB reader drivers;
2 - purchase a new USB card reader for XP

I have looked around for drivers with no luck, so I guess I will have to purchase a new card reader. Anyone have any recommendations?

rgds
