How do i permanently change %USERPROFILE% in the registry?

Q: How do i permanently change %USERPROFILE% in the registry?

I have really tried everything i can think of and researched so much for answers.
Please, i only formatted my computer 2 months ago and then this came out of the blue. I am about to start back at school and i dont want my computer to go bust. I need any help possible.
I wake up and i log on and what comes up is not what my profile I logged into looks like and so i figured that my comp had a quick lapse in ability like it had before that made it assume a temp profile because mine could not be found.
* So i log out and log back in. No fix. Open my comp check all connections. No fix. System Restore. No Fix.
* That's when i found out that i was in TEMP.ESM-01 login not Tarik but i clearly logged into Tarik so i ended up freakin thinking my files were gone. So then i checked and found that when i went to Tarik's docs through My computer it came up empty but when i go to Documents and Settings/Tarik/My docs its all there so "phew" i didn't lose anything but why am i not getting that profile to load?
* After looking at it all and doing some research i found out it has to do with roaming profiles yet i don't have a host network i connect to; i am the host. So finally i found something that may have fixed it and downloaded it from Microsoft called "User Profile Hive Cleanup Service".
* Didn't Work but what i did notice is that it creates and replaces the TEMP.ESM-01 Profile folder every time i log in with Tarik. So i guess it a profile that is being created because %USERPROFILE% is searching for a remote local or roaming profile that isn't there.
* SO i find things to redirect %USERPROFILE% or stop roaming or shutdown my network but nothing works and nothing comes up in my searches that really is clear. I look for shutting down Roaming Profiles in the Local Policies but its not there so there goes that idea.
* I look at the Environment Variables and change that the profiles are loggin into %USERPROFILE% and not into Tarik I even go into CMD and redirect the %USERPROFILE% but it reverts to TEMP.ESM-01 immediately.
* In the User Profile Settings It shows WorkGroup: ESM-01/Tarik Type: Local Back-up and another just like it but Local Local instead of Local Back-up. Back-up is 1.5gb so i figure its a more active profile and guess its my profile but now its a backup and why? I end up copying my Backup Tarik to the Local Tarik and it copies all my files over and sure enough it definitely is my profile.
* So after this i restart try to log back in and see even if it goes to temp it will have my profile settings. But instead it loads and brand new TEMP.ESM-01 profile and the other one is now named Tarik.ESM-01 so i cant even create a new profile. So i change the Workgroup name and i edit the settings to make sure its right and nothing happens.
* So my father thinks it cause my profile is too big and so the netowkr thinks i dont wanna download all that info or create a table of contents just to open a profile so it creates a new one so i cleared some space (38.7GB of downloads to be exact) and then restart and again nothing happens.
Unless this is a virus or some curse then i have no idea how to fix it but i believe it would be solved if i could manually change the %USERPROFILE% through the registry and get rid of my network and roaming profiles. I dont need a network atm so ill happily just have a plain internet connection.
I am running XP and have 4gb(3gb read) and a 3.2ghz AMD dual core and no problems ever except for virus's in the past and said once time profile missing problem.
To top it off and to give some more info csc.exe is failing to close now when i log off it says an error which ill post if i get around to it or if its important but i figure it is since csc.exe is part of the C# Compiler which is part of the Microsoft .NET Framework.
Either way Please Help!!!
This is just so unfair to me atm since i have a hell of alot of bad luck going on in my life and one thing is going right and this will severely make it harder. Please stay away from the generic have you checked your drivers and just format your comp because thats not an option i would like to take. Please give me info if you suggest that.
Thank you for any help and i sincerely mean this when i say that i for the past 3 years have been meaning to donate im just seriously in debt and wish i could do something else for this great site/community.

Preferred Solution: How do i permanently change %USERPROFILE% in the registry?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi, I just resolved my virus/spyware/trojan issues in the other section on this website and I was wondering if I could get some help on my last two issues. There are three users on this computer, but on only one of them these weird folders show up. On the desktop there is a %USERPROFILE% folder. There is also one just inside the C drive. Is there something screwed up in the registry?

Separate issue is that it seems most of the Add/Remove buttons are missing. Only for recently installed programs do I get the option to remove them. Some show file size too, but most don't show anything at all. What's the deal?

Can anyone help me with these issues? Thanks!

I have removed this program 3 days in a row. Twice with Geek Uninstaller & once with Add/Remove Programs. After removing it I reset my Google Chrome to get rid of the search engines it installs & restart my Microsoft Security Essentials which it turned off. When I start the PC the next day I run AdwCleaner & Registry Reviver pops back up again even though I removed it. I run Win7 Professional 64bit. I sure hope someone can help with this.

A:How do I permanently remove Registry Reviver

It must be something you`re downloading.

Why are you using Adware Cleaner and Geek uninstaller ?

MSE and MBAM are all you need, install and run scans.

Use Ccleaner to remove it and cleanup the registry, nothing else.

You can also try Revo uninstaller.

Regisrty Reviver sounds like nothing but bad news and not needed in Windows 7.

Hello. I've been attempting to clean up my notification area on my Windows Vista 32 bit computer by removing all non-system icons. I don't just want the unwanted icons to be hidden, and would like them to be removed from the notification area entirely. I have used this tutorial and have been successful removing the unwanted icons, but whenever I reboot my computer, it reverts to how it once was. The issue appears to be that two registry keys that I delete, being IconStreams and PastIconStreams, keep reappearing after I reboot and restore all of the unwanted icons. I'm not sure what is causing them to constantly reappear, and I couldn't find any tutorials that addressed how to keep them from reappearing, so any help in permanently removing these keys would be much appreciated!

A:Issues Permanently Deleting Registry Keys

Right click on the icon you want to delete, click on delete.  You will be asked if you are sure you want to send this to the recycle bin, click yest, and then empty it from the recycle bin.

Ideally, I want ALL of my folders to arrange themselves in alpabetical order by name. I've set folder preferences to view them this way, but still have to right-click on the browse window and 'Arrange Icons By Name' but, as soon as I close the window and reopen it, it arranges all of the folders back to random.

If setting folder preferences is not the solution, I assume that the registry can be edited to let the folders perform this way.

Another annoyance of XP is working in a folder and wanting to open a file in the folder, but the 'Open' option defaults to a completely non-relevant folder. If you wouldnt mind providing two solutions, is there a way to instruct XP to automatically default to the last folder the application was working in?

PRESENT: Here is an example of what I mean: I am working in a folder that is located on the desktop and wish to open a file. In the application, when I open a file, Windows defaults to 'My Documents' where all of the folders are arranged randomly.

SOLUTION: Ideally, I want Windows to default 'Open' to the last folder worked in and arrange everything alphabetized by their name.

Thank you for your help.

A:How to PERMANENTLY Arrange Folders by Name? Is there a registry solution?

Open Windows Explorer, go to your folder, then sort them the way you want.
Then go to "Tools, Folder Options, View tab", and then select the "Apply to Folder" button.
OK out of Folder Options, and then close Explorer. Now, when you open Explorer or from a program the files should be sorted in the manner you set them at.

Each time you start a new session, the programs will default to My Documents.

hi,
you can modify the windows registry for this as well.

click start type regedit the navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\[Adapter ID]]

(Find the correct adapter you want to change on your machine, there may be multiple entries depending on the number of adopters you may have)

the right click and create a new REG_DWORD, name it MTU, set the value after that.

hope this helps

When I am typing, sometimes I get the character ? instead of ?. After doing some research, all you need to do is select the English(US) instead of English(Can) in the language bar. Apparently, it seems that this language setting only effects the individual software instead of all the software installed on your computer. So for example, if I changed this language setting in Word, this setting will not roll over to Notepad or Chrome or even the OS.

I am wondering if there is a way to permanently save the English(US) setting so it will apply to all of my software?

A:Change Language Permanently

If you go to Regional and Language Settings in the Control Panel, you should be able to set it to English (United States) so that all software defaults to this. Additionally, you can go to the "Keyboards and Languages" tab and click on "Change Keyboards" to ensure that English (US) is installed. If not, you can add it.

On my Dell XP Pro, msconfig lists a number of applications (not services) from 3rd party vendors, such as HP and QWest, scheduled to launch at start-up. Several times, I've unchecked these items, clicked APPLY, and then re-started my system; nevertheless, when my system has finally rebooted, Windows Task Manager shows them running, and I have to eliminate them in Windows Task manager.

So it appears that somehow, there is some application somewhere that is reversing (i.e. ignoring) my (new) settings I try to establish in msconfig. Is anyone familiar with this problem?

I can figure out several ways of dealing with this problem, such as changing the names of these annoying applications (e.g. from application.exe to application.eze) so they cannot be found (therefore cannot launch), but I'd sure like to know what software it is on my machine that keeps overriding my choices. And also how to change the start-up menu permanently without changing the names of the relevant offending programs.

A:Cannot permanently change msconfig settings

msconfig is a diagnostic utility. If you want to permanently manage startup items you should use a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml).
Uncheck whatever you don't want started in that app and let's go from there.

There are a whole bunch of XP services that launch automatically when you start up Windoze. These can be turned off manually by using services.msc.

But I've found that at least some of these can not be turned off permanently. An example is Automatic Updates.

Does anyone know if it is possible to turn these off permanently? One obvious way would be to change the name of the service, and that's not hard to do, but there must be a "proper" way to do it. Anyone have any ideas?

A:How to permanently change Services that launch

Using Automatic Updates as in your example, if you right click the Service, Properties and set the Startup Type to Disabled and reboot, does that not keep it from starting again? If you disable Automatic Updates, you will then get an informational message about that, which you will also have to disable (if you want). If you have particular fussy ones, tell us which and maybe we can help. I don't think renaming is a good method.I have many disabled service too. A:Change font permanently in Word Pad?

Hmm, you can use a trick as i think you can't change the default font in Wpad.

Create a rtf document with a "space", select the space, choose your font and size, save as your-template.rtf.
In properties, tick read only to avoid modifying it, be sur that rtf files open with Wpad.
Change your shortcuts to open Wpad so that they open your-template.rtf and that's it.

I had problems with vista, so i created a new partition, installed a different version of vista, then formatted the original OS partition. (obviously i had no idea what i was doing, but thats beyond the point)
Now i have a problem with the new partition i created for vista.
The default drive on where to save things is C:
however, C: is my OS drive
how can i change it so that all files are downloaded to D: without manually entering it everytime?

Or, would simply changing the Drive letters work?
if so, how do it do it? Ive tried using the vista maintenance tools, but i get an error saying it cannot be changed because of files in use.

Or, should i get a new harddrive, remove the old drive, install a partition on it named c:, install vista on that. (i would assume the original vista disc i have has the ability to create a partition on it when booting from disc.. its preactivated)

Im not really looking for the easiest or cheapest way to do it. I have just googled the crap out of this, and im not really finding the info im looking for, because im not really sure what its called.
So any suggestions would be very helpful

i have no idea why this works but it seems to, and so i wanted to know if there is a way to permanently set the priority of this process to above normal without having to manually adjust it every time i start my computer.

i should mention i tried downloading the program "Prio" which claims the ability to save settings on priorities but unfortunately it doesnt work with svchost.exe

does anyone know how to permanently change the priority of this process?

anyone know how to change user variable permanently for TEMP and TMP path using script for every user profile?

when I use:

A:change user variable permanently for TEMP and TMP

...which is OK because there is nothing to expand in "c:\temp", right?
If you wish to continue using %USERNAME% in those environment vars, you could use something like
set unvar = USERNAME
setx TEMP "c:\Users\%%unvar%%\temp"

which will give you REG_EXPAND_SZ along with "%USERNAME% in it.

I am trying to have my computer boot Linux by default, from an external hard drive, while my internal drive has Windows 10 on it. Unfortunately I cannot get it to work: Windows 10 boots automatically at every restart and cold start.

Steps I've taken so far:
The boot order I want is set and saved in BIOS. There's no uEFI on my computer.
Windows 10 fast startup option is disabled. I also disabled the hibernation option just in case.

Still, I can only get Linux to boot by going into BIOS every time and selecting the (already selected) external hard drive again. When I then try to mount the internal (Win 10) disk from within Linux, I get an error saying it cannot be mounted because Windows 10 is still using it.

Any ideas how to solve this and give full boot control back to BIOS?

How can I permanently change a single file's icon?

I have organized some backups as ISO files, and would like to have a different icon for each file.

I have created an .ICO for each file.

IconChanger worked great, but only while the program was installed. Once I had all the icons changed and thought I was through and uninstalled the program, all the icons went back to their original disc icon.

Is there a way to permanently change a single file's icon, so if I move it to another machine it will retain the icon?

Technically, yes, a "resource editor" can be used to alter icons embedded in executables. However, once you start haxx0ring an app, most software vendors would see that as a violation of their terms of use, which is why I won't provide further technical detail (I realise you're asking for entirely innocent reasons).

I can't imagine it would be worth your time though. It's just an icon, after all.

A:Windows Mail - Permanently change preview panel option

Hello Decorlady, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might consider giving Windows Live Mail a try instead. It is better in my opinion.

It supports Pop3, IMAP, HTTP website (EX: Hotmail) email, and is a lot more stable. Plus, WLM will minimize to a tray bar icon, checks spelling as you type messages, and has a separate Inbox for each email account. WLM will automatically import Windows Mail messages, accounts, and settings into it. Contacts will have to be manually imported from within WLM. (Tools, Contacts, File, Import, Address book for current Windows User.) To see the Menu bar, press ALT+M and check "Show all menus".

Hope this helps,

I have these user variables 'HOME' and 'TEMP' that are populated as in this image:

When I open a shell (even after rebooting), the value of HOME is just the string "%USERPROFILE%" instead of being filled in like the variable TEMP.

Why doesn't the
%USERPROFILE% variable populate?  How do I change this HOME variable to be what it's supposed to be (permanently for all users) using
%USERPROFILE% like TEMP?

Hello All,
This is my first time in a forum, so I apologize in advance for any faux pax I may engage in. I recently installed Windows 7 over my Vista. I was happy for a month or two, and then one day the computer screen displays
"user profile service failed the logon. user cannot be loaded"
and happiness left in a hurry. Now I can not reach any of my files, load any of the original software I had, and to makes things worse it was my administrator account so now I can not change/fix anything. I've tried Microsoft, but they have not provided anything that helps because all their repairs require administrator rights and they can't seem to get the idea that the administrator account will not load.

HELP! I'm desperate to get the computer working again. Please does anyone know how to repair this problem?
Thank you,
Cathy MacCulloch

Hello Cathy, and welcome to Seven Forums.

This may be able to help get this error fixed. It works the same in Windows 7.

Hope this helps,

Deploy Default Userprofile for Personal Use

I want to configure all of my home computers (about 5 computers) with the same settings so that all new users will have the same configurations to all programs installed the same way I configured with the "Computer Owner" base userprofile.

I have a problem with the last step on my list.

Here are my steps so far:

Steps:Install Windows Vista SP1
Create a temporary userprofile called "Computer Owner" to create custom settings
Log in "Computer Owner" account
Install needed programs / software applications*
Run and configure installed programs
Enable "Administrator" account
Log off "Computer Owner" account
Log in "Administrator" account
Copy "Computer Owner" userprofile to C:\Users\Default userprofile
Set permissions to "Everyone"
Create new userprofile called "TestUser" to test
Some of the program settings fail because they still reference the "C:\Users\Computer Owner\..." setting (both in registry and in %AppData%)

How do I get around this problem?

I was thinking that I may need to create a script to replace all occurrences of "C:\Users\Computer Owner" to "C:\Users\USERNAME" in the registry and in %AppData% configuration files, so that when the new user TestUser logs on for the first time, the scripts run and they change all settings to fit TestUser.

Hi -

Do you plan to have the same username on all 5 computers? I think 2 issues will be environment variables and ability (or not) to run apps/installs at elevated admin level.

Environment variables %temp% & %tmp% reserved for each user and contain install files, logs, other, etc... used to update some products. Elevated admin level or Trusted Installer/ NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM used for driver updates and Window Updates.

Are these stand-alone systems or all connected to a server?

I grasp concept - but not the practicality here. I think this will turn into nightmare for you b/c of Vista security - SIDs in particular dealing w/ file permission settings - "Everyone" group or not.

Are all 5 computers identical hardware-wise?

May I ask the purpose for this?

Finally, there may be other forces at work - like WinSxS. I found this directory containing sample music on this Vista x64 Intel system -

Code:
C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-musicsamples_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_043c39ea6d9a42f6
I don't know its role, if any, but there are others like it.

Happy New Year!

Regards. . .

Hello all!
While trying to fix some app, I changed my user account to a local account. During that process, Windows told me I could not use my regular user name ("Windows is already using that name"), so I changed it a bit...
Let's say my user name was John, then I changed it to John1

After the app was fixed, I changed my account type back to a Windows live account, using the same email/PW as before.

Now everything seems fine "on the surface". Both my user name displayed on screen is John, and my user's files are filed Under "John".

BUT!

I did a File History back up, and to my surprise, my files were stored under "John1" ?!?!?

I then opened the CMD window and did "Set User" command which brough up the following:

USERNAME=John1
USERPROFILE=c:/John

Any idea how I can change the USERNAME back to John? I know it does'nt change much in the end, but I like things clean, and right now, my file history is Under John1 for this computer, and John for my other computers...

Thanks!

Might be the problem, how exactly did you copy the profile? copy/paste?

See this, the process is very similar in Vista

Is it from an infection?

I'm experimenting with Folder Redirection and after getting it set up, I quickly realized that any VBS scripts that have environmental variables such as %UserProfile% become unusable.
A simple example:

Code:
C:\CD %UserProfile%\Desktop
And

Code:
'Place to deposit excel output file
Depo=oShell.ExpandEnvironmentStrings("%userprofile%" & "\Desktop\Folder_This_User_Needs_Easy_Access_To\")
if not objfso.folderexists(Depo) then
objFSO.CreateFolder(Depo)
end if
These no longer work when using Folder Redirection. I'm hoping there is a work around for this because a lot of my existing scripts depend on this variable remaining valid. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

When I check the extension list that Winpatrol provides it shows that the following extensions have been changed to NOTEPAD.exe1%. I looked in the registry and under extensions all the following show notepad.exe^.ini, notepad.exe^.txt and notepad.exe^.wtx.

I have Windows XP home w/SP2 and I am buffaloed. I thought I was a knowledgable user, but I have been trying to stop a program from autorunning. I have deleted the value in the registry under the "RUN" key of H_KEY LOCAL_MACHINE, and CURRENT-USER, then I exit, and as soon as I open regedit again, the values are back like they were, ignoring my deletion. How do I save the changes I make to text strings in the XP registry?

I have administrator priveleges.

I miss Windows 3.1, where you only had sys.ini and win.ini to fool with, and when you changed something it stayed changed. Hahahaha.

Thanks.

A:Registry won't change!

The program could be spyware or a virus, run through Steps 1 and 2 in my Guide completely and then use Autoruns in Step 5 to remove any remaining startup applications.
