Apps deleted after restore of system

Q: Apps deleted after restore of system

Hi,
I did a system restore because my mouse would freeze and my volume control button would not work. I have had multiple problems with this since upgrading to Windows 8; I have a Toshiba Satellite. Most of the apps that came with the laptop have now been deleted and I cannot re-install them. Can someone help?

Preferred Solution: Apps deleted after restore of system

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,
What was the operating system on the laptop when you purchased it? How did you do the upgrade to windows 8 and / or 8.1? What installation disks do you have?
Sorry I don't have answers yet but I'm trying to understand what you have and how to solve the problem

Accidentally deleted important files, system restore not working
I accidentally deleted some important files when trying to free up space on my laptop. Now, when I startup, it cannot go to my user. I lost my email settings, other functions. My docs are accessible by going to 'My Computer' then to drive C: then to the user, etc. However, from my Start menu, I can't get to them by simply clicking 'My Documents'.

I've tried to do some 'repairs' using Microsoft Knowledgebase but so far have been unsuccessful. I tried some of the suggested things and have made alist of many of the files that are missing when I tried to do a system repair. These files are not in the recovery section c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386. The list is here:

Lmmib2.dll
spider.exe
clipbrd.exe
hostmib.dll
staxmem.dll
admexs.dll
appconf.dll
iisadmin.dll
iisfecnv.dll
infocomm.dll
iscomlog.dll

I ran HiJackThis and the results are below.

any ideas would be helpful.
Thanks.

I had a virus that had installed itself, so I used System Restore to try to regain control over my computer. I chose a restore point from Sunday the 4th.
Instead of using the restore point, System Restore deleted all of my files and documents and data, uninstalled every single program I had, and undid all of my Windows settings, except parts of my start menu (now filled with broken links to nonexistent programs). It apparently put my computer back in its factory state, which is NOT what I told it to do.

(Edit: I ran a Search for one of my documents, which appeared and could be opened, except that the path supposedly containing it doesn't have the file, so I can't access it except through Searth.)
The changes are supposed to be "reversible," except I cannot find any way to reverse them!

Please help me undo this deletion, recover my data, and restore my computer to the actual May 4th restore point.

My system restore wouldn't work so I accidently deleted the restore point files. How could I bring the deleted files back?
Also too my hard drive has exe files that are causing problems

Would it be best to reinstall my XP cleaning out my hard drive?

What would you recommend?

Thank You

Unless you copied your restore points to another location before you deleted them, you cannot bring your restore points back.

hello

I performed a system restore on my laptop and now cannot use the default apps like mail, calendar, xbox and onenote.
Opening these apps will just give me an error stating that it cannot open the application and to go to the store to reinstall it.
I have attempted to reinstall the apps via the microsoft store but it just greys the reinstall button and seemingly does nothing else.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium. My restore points are deleted every few days. I'm pretty sure it is not a virus. My system protection Current Usage with 1 set of restore points is 4.61 GB. I've used Combofix on multiple different computers, but when I used it last night, it deleted EVERYTHING. The only thing it seemed to keep were my music and pictures. Everything that's considered an application has been marked for deletion. Every time I try to open something, a box comes up that says "[Insert file location here] Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". I can't even get on the internet because IE, Chrome, and Firefox have all been marked for deletion as well. I panicked a bit, and then decided the safest thing I could do would be to back up everything I absolutely could on a flash drive and do a system restore. However, when I went to click on the "System Restore" application, it had been deleted as well! I'm stuck! My laptop is absolutely useless right now. I'm currently using a friend's computer to type this topic. Please help me, my whole life is on that laptop. I CANNOT lose everything! I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium.

Hi again all,

I'm doing an Acronis system recovery and was wondering how this will affect my windows live mail past mail.

For instance I have allot of information in old mail such as passwords, order numbers and so on which I regularly refer to.

Is this all stored online and wont be affected or is it on my system somewhere and will be deleted in the recovery process?

Any advice would be much appreciated as always.

Cheers.

I have system protection for system settings and files set to 2gb on c: for c:

there are two triggers in the scheduled tasks, and both work (a restore point gets created when the conditions are met)
when i install updates or uninstall a program
when i start the machine
Also, when i manually run the task or the command line used by the tasks, a restore point is created.

BUT the restore points eventually get deleted. I had two of them earlier today, using less than 400mb, now I have none. they don't get deleted after a restart. i haven't been able to pinpoint when they get deleted, but they don't last more than a day or two. and they never get anywhere near the allowed 2gb, though they do get past the allocated 300mb

VSS service is set to manual start, which is the default.

system protection is ONLY on for drive C:. I tried to disable it for drive C:, restart the machine, then re-enable it. no go.

i ran a SFC, no errors.

I ran MSE, MBAM, Temp Folder Cleaner and Sophos anti-rootkit, nothing found.

I ran a registry clean and compact (eusing), no difference.

my system was upgrade from Vista, where system restore worked fine.

i don't know what else to do. I have a daily backups, but system restore is a lot more convenient. I would like to get it to run.

thank you in advance for any input

I don't know how I did it, actually I do.. I thought I was deleting the history in the task scheduler for the automatic creation of restore points. As it turns out, I deleted the triggers. Both the one that launches a restore point creation once a day and the one that creates a restore point at system startup.

Is there a guide on how to recreate the triggers. I fooled around with it but no joy.

The very first thing I tried to do was a system restore but that failed for some reason.

I'll just assume that we have all seen this post, or had the issue our selves, at some point. I too was not lazy about this and searched Google, bing, and every forum on earth (including this one) for a solution. I was told, WRONGLY of course, by a web site that the Environment Variable PATH(all caps) was different than path(all lower-case), SO, trying to force Java to work for the android SDK, I added a PATH/blah/blah/blah/java stuff. Which, of course, ended up re-writing the original path(lower-case) that existed. NOW, I am freaking out because I have no issues yet but have a strong feeling one day my new laptop will commit suicide because of this issue. I have tried Recovery at least 10 times. I tried once after I caused the issue. Then googled harder. I have completely uninstalled (using the McAfee tool) my trial of McAfee, I uninstalled Avast(first manually, then using their tool and deleting the registry for it), I went as far as uninstalling CCleaner and Malwarebytes to make sure it was not them. I tried Recovery in Safe Mode, in Clean Boot mode, and then tried the two together! Still, I cannot seem to get a System Restore to work. This laptop (asus) was "owned" by another person for a month before me. They started it, looked at, couldn't figure it out (older person), and gave it to me.

When I do the Recovery (system restore) I get the whole-

A:Deleted PATH and System Restore Error

You can give this a try.

Look in C:\Windows\System32\config. That's where the registry files are located:

default
sam
security
software
system

I don't know where environment variables are kept but you could try the following:
Look at the date of the registry file in C:\Windows\System32\config\regback. If they are dated before you messed up the path variable then:

rename C:\Windows\System32\config\system system-old
copy C:\Windows\System32\config\regback\system C:\Windows\System32\config

Reboot and see if that fixed it. If not, put system back then try software, then security then sam then default. One of them should fix the problem. Once you have it fixed, copy the path Environment Variable info then put back the registry file you replaced to the original (-old) version, reboot then fix the path variable.

Note: You may have to do this from the WinRE environment by booting a Windows 8 or 8.1 install DVD or flash drive as the files may be locked (in use) when booted from C:.

A:Deleted Files With Cc Cleaner Had To Use System Restore

System restore has limited use, it can sometimes get you out of trouble, but as often it doesn't help. Generally it doesn't delete user files, so something else may be going on.The first thing is to do a thorough scan of your computer for viruses and spyware. Do you have programs on your computer? If not there are several free online programs that people can suggest. After you are sure that your computer is clean, I would log on as administrator and search for the lost files. It may be that they are still on your system somewhere. Particularly check the recycle bin. Most recovery programs cost money, but here is one that has a free trial version. http://www.smartundelete.com/?id=suggFinally a good system backup is worth more than gold. A:system restore to get deleted excel file??

System Restore doesn't archive files.

Your best bet is to use one of these:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/restoration.html
http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/uk/welcome.htm

The more you install and the more you use the computer, the greater the chances that something will get written over the top of the lost file. Ideally, you would put your drive in another machine as a slave so that nothing got written to it at all. Then install and run these recovery programs from there.

Delete all your temporary internet files, temp files, and anything else you can. That will free up some drive space and lessen the chances that your file will be overwritten.

I have had this problem ever since I installed my Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I did a clean install, and everything is perfect, I haven't had problems with the system, but I think it's good to have restore points for the times when, and if, I need it, so I ask for help till it's not too late.

I googled the problem and saw that it is a very common problem for Windows 7. Nevertheless, I haven't yet found a proper solution for it. The space I am using for storing restore points is, by defaults, 3% of the portion of the hard disk -- 1,5GB.

A:System Restore Points Being Deleted After Reboot

Increase the allowed space a bit. I think it will work.
You have your system image, shadow copies, and backup and restore points. I think a bit more space is needed.
You can use the software windirstat to see how the space is used.

You can put the cursor (or click) over any partition etc, to get more inforamtion

I left the internet on for a little bit when I thought I'd be going right back and then I fell asleep. :/ Not the smartest thing, I know. Everything was okay when I left it. A family member woke me up, saying that she got on the computer and clicked the firefox icon (there was already a firefox window minimized) and immediately something "weird" popped up and she closed it and then a virus alert window popped up. She closed that too. She woke me up and told me, so I did a virus scan and it found the following:

(I use avast! antivirus and Comodo firewall)

C:\ProgramFiles\AutoMacroRecorder\autofile.exe
Malware Win32 Trojan Gen {VC}

C:\SystemVolumeInformation\...\A0051159.exe
Malware Win32 Trojan Gen {VC}

"Restore" was part of the "..."

The antivirus said it repaired the first file but had an error trying to repair the second file. I immediately scanned again and it found both problems again even though it had said it repaired the first file. I deleted the first file this time.

I asked someone who I know is good with computers for help and asked if I should try to use the "delete" option on the second file since "repair" didn't work. He said he had no idea why it wasn't repairing it or what the folder was for and said he guesses I should try to delete it. I deleted it. He admitted dealing with malware isn't his area of expertise. And I'll admit that I shouldn't have done that without getting on... Read more

Does anyone know how to clear out deleted Windows Store apps from the computer? When you go into the Windows Store and right click and choose 'your apps' the selection 'apps not istalled on this pc' still shows apps that I have deleted. I only installed on one device (unless they auto-install to the xbox360 also?). I cannot see how to clear out previously deleted apps. See attached pic to see what I am talking about.

Hello. I am currently using a different computer, other than the one with the virus. When I start the other computer normally, it crashes. I put it in Safe Mode to do a system restore, but all of the restore point have been deleted! So, I'm pretty sure I have some type of virus. I ran HijackThis in Safe Mode, but the results were a lot shorter than if I were to run it in normal mode. I don't know if that will be a problem...

So, I transferred the HijackThis log over the the computer I'm using with a USB...

Also, I think something is screwing around with EXPLORER.EXE. Because, in Safe Mode, the "Do you want to continue running Safe Mode, or do a system restore" dialog box kept on reappearing, and the start bar kept on going away and coming back, which means...EXPLORER.EXE kept on restarting, correct?

I never had this happen before.

I'm using Windows XP Service Pack 2 and I know very little about computers so bare with me.

This morning my Avast antivirus (free version) told me I had a trojan (win32?) in my operating system and I had to shut down the computer and somewhere in restart mode Avast was scanning all the files. It detected a virus of some sort in my operating files and it wouldn't let me move to the chest or repair, but it allowed me to delete. I did this 5 times.

So after all that my computer is back up and running and one of my games is running slow and choppy which never happened before (Luxor 2). So I figured let me do a system restore and it won't do it. It keeps saying it failed, but gives no reason why. I tried to pick a different restore date and the same thing happens.

I tried to do a restore in safe mode and it still failed.

I even uninstalled Avast and my AdAware programs and it still fails.
I updated my NVIDIA drivers - still nothing (it doesn't fix my game either).

I am running a system file checker now.

NOTE: I went into BIOS and was looking at stuff but I think I may have messed it up because ever since then, when my computer re-boots, there is this grayish bar at the bottom of the screen that "loads" and then my windows screen comes on with the little bar.

PLEASE HELP ME!! I've been trying to fix this almost all day. It's not so much the game but rather that I think I messed up some setting on my compute... Read more

Hi

I have window 8 pro 64 bit machine. I had to hardboot the system due to hang. After the hardboot i was not able to reboot again. I did start up repair and finally i did a system restore. The system restore was succesfull but when i logged in i lost my personla files saved inside C drive and also lost the Pst files. Now all the application has issue. Like autocad, photoshop.

I used some recovery software to recover the files. But most of the files are lost.

Request help to get the data.

Thanks

A:System Restore Deleted Files Personal file

System restore shouldnt touch your personal files unless they were saved on the c drive outside of your personal directory.

You have pretty much already done what you can do to restore the files you are missing. If you cant find them it is likely because the data has already been overwritten by something else and is now irretrievable. You might be able to use a program like Recuva or GetDataBack to get the rest of it, but I would say that its doubtful.

Because of the differences in the system restore technologies between windows 7 and windows XP, when booting out of XP and into Win 7 Pro the Win 7 restore points will have been deleted. My scenareo is XP - original system on first physical disk (boot loaders are here) and Win 7 on third physical disk, with second physical disk just for data.
There are various tutorials about doing the registry fix in XP as in KB926185, by using the registry hack HKLM\System\MountedDevices\Offline and setting the other system DWord to 1. However, I have done this and it doesn't fix the problem, as I keep up to date images, its not mission critical but it would be great if I could finally resolve it. Has anyone else had the problem with this registry fix not working (I cannot use bitlocker because I don't have Ultimate). Mike

There was a system environment variable called "Path", which had numerous things in there. I created one called "PATH" and closed it. When I reopened it, I saw that "Path" had been deleted. I have not restarted my computer. I am here seeking assistance in mitigating the damage this has caused, so here are the details:
- I have no system restore backup
- I have no command prompts open
- I have not restarted as of yet
What are the consequences of deleting this variable? How can I restore the variable?

This morning I mistakenly clicked a bad link. IE froze up and refused to load the task manager. I restarted my computer by turning the power off, but Windows would never load, it would just stay on a black screen. I restarted again in Safe Mode and tried to use System Restore, but it said I had no restore points. I restarted again and used System Repair. It found nothing wrong and told me to remove a new piece of hardware to fix the problem. I'm using my home computer and I haven't added new hardware in months, so I have no idea what it's talking about.

I tried this several times before I gave up and decided to use System Recovery, with the option to backup my personal data (photos and such). It reset my computer to factory settings, but when I went to Backup and Restore there were no files.

I gave up all my photos for loss and tried to reinstall Trend Micro, but I had a LOT of trouble. It kept freezing up every time I tried to download a patch. Ctrl Alt Del would bring up a black screen and an error message. It also tried to download a driver for a new 'Unknown Device,' but that has only happened once so far.

Finally got Trend installed, but my computer runs really slow and it freezes up solid every time I try a virus scan. It also freezes when I try a search for something that will fix the problem. I had to use Safe Mode to join this forum.

I finally found my missing personal files in C:\BACKUP which I had to use search to find, but I have no... Read more

I just recently bought this computer, mainly for gaming. Somehow obtained a virus and then removed it but for some reason now any type of video or game I run randomly lags. Badly.

I went to do a System Restore and all 10 of my restore points were gone.

- The lag is maybe 3-5 second freezes and or skips. Video only, the audio stays the same.

The only thing I recently installed that was a major file was Bit Defender using Trialpay.

Here's my system:

Dell Insprion 560, Pentium® Dual-Core CPU E5800, 3.20GHZ 4GB RAM, 64 Bit OS.

I'm willing to try anything to fix this, the same damn thing happened to my old computer I don't know what it is please help.

Quite simply, I went into Device Manager (in my administrator account) and uninstalled my Novatel Ovation U727 USB modem and its device drivers because I was having problems with the modem deactivating itself from the USB port whenever I was online.

I then rebooted and plugged the modem back in, thinking Vista would detect the modem and reinstall the device drivers for it. However, it seems that uninstalling the device drivers actually completely purges them from the system. I tried using the Slingshot driver CD that came with the modem and my Windows DVD to find the missing device drivers.

I then went into Device Manager and searched online for drivers. I was able to retrieve device drivers for two of the four data interfaces that the modem apparently needs drivers for. I was able to get drivers installed for the modem and status port (com 4) components, but apparently there are two others that need device drivers.

I've already looked on Slingshot's website, but they don't have any drivers available.

Windows came with these drivers by default, so there must be a way to retrieve them without completely reinstalling Windows. Would using System Restore get back the uninstalled drivers?

I'm attaching a screencap of my Device Manager to show what I'm talking about.

A:Will System Restore recover deleted device driver?

Best I can say is it should, as long as you use a restore point that is before you deleted things. It has worked for me in the past in restoring drivers after a bad update install.

Every one swears by the System restore feature of Windows. Be it any instance, where we have accidentally closed a file before saving, or files got deleted or inaccessible we run this system restore which creates checkpoints automatically or manually and restores the system back to the settings of that previous date.
This feature is very popular and is of much utility.

A:chkdsk appears to have deleted stuff and disabled system restore

Hmm, the only thing I see in the log is a pretty common cleanup of index and security entries.

Interwebs says this:

This problem occurs because if Chkdsk is run against an NTFS volume, Chkdsk.exe may report that security descriptors are in the database that are no longer referenced by any file or folder and that it is removing them. However, Chkdsk.exe just reclaims the unused security descriptors as a housekeeping activity, and it does not actually fix any kind of problem.

Not sure if that would have any impact on your shortcuts or restore points though. In fact I would guess that it wouldn't Maybe there is another issue here, have you made any other changes to the operating system, or an unsuccessful restore at any point?

Hello, I have done one of the stupidest things in the world and have been trying all day to recover my files that went missing.  Here's what happened:
I deleted a bunch of registry entries because Spybot S&D always showed these five things as threat level 5 and can't clean them.  I decided to search the registry for the string of numbers and letters that S&D referred to and deleted all of the ones it would let me delete.
I also deleted all of the files and folders in the location Users/HomeAppData/Local/Temp except the one file it wouldn't let me.
When I came back to Windows nothing was working so I rebooted.  When I rebooted all of my programs, files, everything was gone.  I did a system restore to the most recent point which was from a week ago which turned everything back to normal except some very important files are missing from a folder on my desktop.
I am a musician and have been working on a recording which I save as I go as multiple versions ex. song 1.1, song 1.2, etc.  All of the versions that were created after the available system restore date are gone.  But it's weird because the bounces that I did (wav files not pro tools files) from the later versions are there, just not their pro tools session file counter parts.
I've restored all of the files/folders to Users/HomeAppData/Local/Temp however that didn't change anything.
The pro tools files that went missing are not hidden, I can't see them when I show hidden files.  I... Read more

Hope someone can help with this. I have an acer travelmate 4050. I have successfully managed to do a full system restore in the past from the backup discs i created. But now my erecovery utility seems to have disappeared. I have tried reinstalling it from the drivers disc i have. It reinstalls emanager (which contains erecovery) but when i try to open emanager after reinstalling it i get the message failed to get data for emanager group. Then emanager opens but only shows Acer eSettings and Acer ePresentation, no sign of erecovery. I have also tried to do the full system restore by booting from the system cd. It appears to be working but when it asks me to insert the recovery cd i get a message: Usage error 11030 Invalid destination drive. Then a message tells me to remove the recovery cd and put in the system cd. The system will reboot and copy files from the system cd. However when it reboots and again goes through the process when it tells me to insert the recovery cd i still get the same usage error message, invalid destination drive. Hope all this makes sense and someone can help.

Hi,

Please open or download/save the Adobe .PDF file from Acer I found, it may help you fix this problem.

http://support.acerpanam.com/acerpanam/manuals/acer/0000/documents/dt_026.pdf

The problem is only for a couple of models of your Acer notebook, but check what it says.... a new set of Recovery disks may help.

Of course, you need Adobe Reader or another utility to open and read .PDF docs

Here is one support site for Acer:

http://support.acer-euro.com/faqs/index.html <<You will see links there on the left to FAQ's, Technical Documents, etc.

Your User guide in case you need it >>> http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/tm_4050.html

Errors with Recovery on various brands of computers are seen very often- things like having installed extra hardware, even having an external hard drive plugged in....while trying the Recovery can cause a failure. Return the system to about how it was when you got it- don;t have USB devices like hard disks, MP3 players, cameras, etc plugged in.

Wash the CDs you are booting up with- rinse them in nice warm plain water and pat dry, do not use paper towel, use a clean soft towel and wave to completely dry.

It's a laptop so you cannot check the hard drive cable like in a tower, but you can try opening the compartment and checking if the drive is connected solidly... if you have your user manual, follow the directions for that or ask Acer support.

For some reason, the Recovery process is not finding the har... Read more
