x240 Keyboard

Q: x240 Keyboard

Just wondering if it were possible to swap a non-backlit keyboard with a backlit keyboard on the x240? If so, what is involved? I know that it was possible for the x230, but wasn't quite sure about the x240. Jeremy

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm running out of ideas so I hope you can help. When I turn on the laptop, I see the lights but nothing else. It's only when I connect it to an external monitor that I see the actual screen. Same with the keyboard - only the attached keyboard works. I updated drivers and bios. There's no damage. This is using Windows 7 and I've had no problems with it. Under display, detecting another screen fails, just gives me the external screen. Touchpad is enabled in settings but doesn't work. Any ideas? The laptop is about 4 years old and out of warranty. No spills or damage.

Hi all, I have a Thinkpad x240 that I bought refurbrished in ferbruary. It was working perfectly untill recently I've noticed a problem with a bult-in keyboard. So microphone mute key stopped working and when I press down and hold left Alt key, microphone mute indicator powers on. Also sometimes Fn lock led stays powered on even though Fn lock is disabled. I've noticed this behavior after I've used logitech wireless mouse with usb unified reciever. Is there a way to fix this strange behavior? I've already cleaned contacts on the keyboard connector on the motherboard and cable, but it didn't fix the problem. Also it seems like it is not OS dependet, because it has the same behavior in bios/linux/windows 7 & 10.

Hi! I am experiencing a weird glitch that happens to my laptop keyboard.  Last weekend, I have discovered that only 5 and 6 keys work on the top row number keys of my keyboard. Also, F10, F11, F12, Home key and Delete keys don't work. Other keys are working. I have tried the keys multiple times but the don't register anything on the screen. I have tried booting in my linux system and the problem persists. I have tried multiple reboots, load optimized settings in bios  Upon testing the top number row, I have discovered that pressing 6, 7, and 8 key, simultaneously, registers an "equal sign (=)" on notepad, and 3, 4, and 5 keys registers an F2 equivalent click, which proves that the keys aren't broken.  Yesterday, upon booting up my system, all the keys seem to be perfectly working again.  However, last night (up until now)(out of the blue), the aforementioned keys suddenly didn't work again. Anyone having the same problem? Any solutions, guys? Thank you!

My x240 won't boot at all. The backlight for the keyboard and all the other indication lights (power, caps lock, etc) blink about every second. I've tried: * removing the battery and working from mains power* inserting a pin into the emergency-reset* pressing power button for 30 seconds* frequent pressing of the power button, with battery, without, on mains power, and no power at all. None fix the problem. I suspect that either the SSD, or a memory module, is either damaged or just been shifted in its slot (years back I had an old Sony that wouldn't boot. Re-seating the HDD solved it in that case). Any help appreciated.

Hi, everyone. I would really appreciate any help on this to retain the maximum usage of my X240. The special alternate functions of F1, F2 and F3 keys are not completely functioning. I recently replaced my keyboard recently to a backlit one, only to find out that the alternate special functions of F1, F2 and F3 keys (mute, volume down and volume up) are not working completely. The funny thing is that the indicator lights up when the computer is freshly booted and EVEN DOES WORK for the first few minutes, BUT malfunctions after a few minutes. What's weird is that the NORMAL functions of F1, F2 and F3 keys are STILL WORKING despite the malfunction of the alternate special functions. To illustrate, here's a sample scenario: 0-~2 minutes: computer powers up; desktop is shown. keys function as they should, including special functions of F1, F2 and F3 (mute, volume down, volume up). Keylight indicator in F1 (mute indicator) working. 3 minutes and beyond: standard function of F1, F2 and F3 continues to function, but the special functions DOES NOT work anymore. Keylight indicator in F1 (mute indicator) is not working anymore. This happens everytime I boot. I tried to search forums for solutions, but I haven't found a solution yet. While this does not necessarily ruin the whole typing experience for me, it does cause a slight annoyance, especially with the fact that I cannot change the volume without manually going to the controls myself.  C... My brother got a X240 with a regular 1TB HDD, and I'm looking to help him with upgrading to an internal SSD for the OS/Apps. I first thought it just used a regular mSATA, but it apparently uses a new style called M.2.

Unfortunately I can't seem to find any info on what's supported, how large can they be, etc...

My local computer store has this for M.2 in 512gb size, would this fit in the X240?

Howdy HiVolt,

I don't think that one will fit.  There are several different lengths of m.2 SSDs and the one in the X240 is 42mm.  The one you linked is longer than that.

Up until recently the highest capacity 42mm part was 128GB IIRC, but I think someone has come out with a 256GB 42mm unit.  [edit] I'm not able to verify that just now.  [more edit] Yes I am.  See post below.

Here's their compatibility list.  Please note I have no personal experience with this company.

Hello, In short, fn key does not work in lenovo x240 with latest bios update (2.35). I can swap fn and ctrl keys, and then function keys works via the ctrl key, but the fn key does not work as ctrl. I think this problem is OS independent (tried w10, w7, ubuntu). I have tried installing older bios for this model from the following page:https://support.lenovo.com/es/en/olddownloads/ds035950 But I can only install a few of the newest ones, as the older ones report that they are not compatibles with my system (though the readme says w7-w10 compatibility). No luck with any of the ones I could install. I also tried the hotkey features integration from here, no luck either:http://support.lenovo.com/es/en/downloads/ds029026  This question has been answered a gazillion times, but ill do it one more time as there is no solution posted anywhere. I was able to download nz0wh0w 2016/05/10 by modifying the link to the latest version.

I recently purchased a refurbished x240 - I am having 2 issues, which I would welcome help with: 1. the areas with buttons on the top and bottom of the track pad also move the cursor - this often causes an inaccuracy, with the cursor moving slightly before or after pressing one of these buttons - is there anything which can do done about this, or is it a design fault? 2. my computer arrived with no internal battery, just a 6-cell external battery - the seller claims that the internal battery only functions if the external battery is a 3-cell, and that there is therefore no point in me purchasing an internal battery - can this be verified? Thanks for your help!

My Thinkpad X240 only comes with an external battery pack, no internal.  I usually power down my laptop at the end of the day.  The following day it won't power on.  I have to remove and re-insert back the battery pack before it turns on. If I power down and leave the laptop for 2hrs it will power up without me having to remove and re-insert back the battery pack.  But if I leave the laptop powered down for more than 3hrs I have to do the process to turn it back on. The battery charges normally, I usually get 4hrs out of the 6 cell pack. I ran the Lenovo Solution Center Comprehensive Tests, no errors found.  I also did the rest button but it won't power on without going thru the process of battery removal.

Hi folks, I have an X240 that just ran out of warranty. I was having some intermittent hard drive troubles so I sent it in before the end of the warranty, and it came back with a new hard drive. Unfortunately, it no longer recognises my external batteries - I have two, both genuine Lenovo, one 68 and one 68+. Lenovo won't fix it as they say it's related to the battery latch being broken, but the battery latch has been broken for a whole year and the batteries always worked just fine. When I first got the computer back the batteires weren't showing up in Windows power manager, but I could see them in Lenovo Settings where they were showing as "good" condition. The 68+ had 5% charge and the 68 had about 80% charge.  I did a heap of Windows updates etc. which didn't fix it, then tried to "reset" the 68+ through Lenovo Settings, after which it stopped showing up there at all. I now get a message about a battery error when I boot to Windows. I haven't put the 68 back in for while, though I guess I could to see if it still shows up. I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas why the computer might have suddenly stopped recognising the batteries, and anything I can try to try to get my battery life back (going from about 10 hours to about 1 hour makes the computer kind of useless for what I use it for). As I said, I'd be very surprised if it was to do with the latch, as that's been the same for ages. Thanks in advance

The Clickpad absolutely sucks and I can't believe I now own the one generation of ThinkPads that have this abomination. I'd like to replace it without having to buy a whole new laptop.

A:X250 Trackpad in an X240?

Hello XThinkpadUser, I am very sorry, but I advice You to forget this idea. There are most likely going to be some imcopatibilities in BIOS, and if not so, then some differences with the shape of the keyboard / trackpad connector. Plus you would need to replace the whole keyboard bezel. My opinion is based on the same glitch with old X200 and X201 - many people asked if X200 can be backwards upgraded with touchpad - it can be definitely not (afaik). Nobody can mark your question as impossible until first X250's arrive, but in your case I would hurry selling your X240 unit. Sooner you do it, you will get more paid for it... (believe me, you have my best sympathy, but I am in much more huge trap - what shall I my X220 change for?? :-) ) Regards, skrble
