Microsoft Outlook - Messaging Interface

Q: Microsoft Outlook - Messaging Interface

When I try to do some basis steps on Outlook like send a message or delete an old message, I get this popup "The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem persists, restart Outlook". No where in the HELP section do I see any reference to "messaging interface". Can anyone enlighten me?

Many thanks, David

Preferred Solution: Microsoft Outlook - Messaging Interface

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi penguin88,What version of Outlook are you using?I've found several references to this error which might help.If you have an older version of Outlook, this might help: See if there's something called TaskPad in Page Setup. If so, try unchecking it.If that's not something that will work, try disabling the addins by going to Tools > Options > Other tab > Advanced OptionsClick on the Addin Manager button. Remove any reference to Google desktop. (or any other addin not native to Outlook) Click ok.Do the same for the Com-Add-ins button.Microsoft also has a patch, but I'm not sure it applies in your case and it's only for the specific symptoms it describes.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/275186Did any of this help?Zllio

My Outlook (office XP on XP Pro) does not work - wil not send or receive, even though the settings were tested successfully. When I try to delete messages in the outbox it says "The messaging Interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem persists, restart Outlook"

It keeps sending the same messages over and over again from the outbox.

Outlook has worked on this machine for years before this. I can post a hijak log if necessary (it was resending messages).

Any suggestions?

I'm running Windows XP on an HP notebook. How can I empty the sent items folder?

partially my fault; i let my rarely have time to sort my email. everytime the *.pst file get to be 1.9 gig deleting messages becomes impossible. whenever you try to delete, a window opens with 'messaging interface error, if problem persists restart outlook.' well, it doesn't solve the problem. i've scanned it using the scanpst.exe and it doesn't work. the temporary fix i've done is to start a new outlook.pst and drop the old one into another harddisk. has anyone been able to solve this problem?

You are pretty much at the size limit for a PST file. That may be at the heart of the problem.

I have been successfully using Outlook 2000 on my Vista system for the last 8 months (after sorting out some initial problems) without any major issues. But today when I tried to access the address book (To button on the email) I received error message: "The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem persists, restart Outlook"
Restart did not do anything. An I also uninstalled a couple of Windows Vista updates which I installed yesterday (updates from March 2008), which did not solve the problem.

So I cannot send any emails from Outlook in the moment which is fairly annoying. Any ideas what to do about this issue?

I've been trying out various Metro apps, and have more or less got them working except for Messaging. I seem to have successfully linked it to Facebook (at least I signed up for Windows Live/Facebook integration), but whenever I start Messaging I get a brief message that "Microsoft is unavailable" and no messages/statuses appear. That is, except for some blurbs from the Windows Live Messaging team. Down at the bottom it shows "Connected to" and a small Facebook icon. However none of my friends show up. It's possible, but rather unlikely, that none of them are online.

So has anyone else managed to get Messaging working today (or yesterday, for that matter?)

I am looking to configure Outlook 2010 to send reminders from my calendar to a selected number of mobile phones.

So when I do to set this up in Outlook, I then have to use this OMS feature to allow the communications.

So, how does this actually work? Does it cost say 10p per message sent, then also an additional fee per message taken by the OMS provider?

Your help and advice in this would be great!

Recently we decided to purchase a small number of Office XP liscenses to test and evaluate before deciding to outlay the cash to upgrade the organization. I, being the network administrator, am one of the Guinea Pigs.

We use Netscape Messaging Server. When I upgraded Outlook, I found that I can no longer use our ldap address server to look up addresses. I recieve the following message in a pop-up box:

Insufficient Rights to Browse the Directory.

Then I recieve a pop-up stating: The action could not be completed.

This only happens in Outlook 2002. If I uninstall it and go back to Outlook 2000, I don't have this problem. Neither does Mozilla 0.9.5 or OE 6. Only Outlook 2002.

Anyone have any idea what I need to change to be able to correct this?

A:Netscape Messaging Server and Outlook 2002

Hope this helps

To resolve this behavior, connect to the Internet or to the network that the LDAP directory server is on.

To work around this behavior, change the order of the e-mail accounts:

In Outlook 2002, on the Tools menu, click Address Book. The error may appear when the Address Book dialog box opens.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Options.
Change the option under Show this address list first to be an address book other than the LDAP directory.
Under When sending mail, check names using these address lists in the following order, move the LDAP directory to the bottom of the list by selecting it and clicking the down-arrow.

And just for anyone who might run into such issue, here is the solution:

I read at Microsoft office site here that they offer language packs at some charge which is none sense anyways especially if someone bought the office cd/dvd.

I looked up the English pack and found it at here. The steps on how to install the pack are simple, and explained in order on the first link provided above.

I have installed the Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator 1.4 (a 32 bit program) in a HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook with a 64 bit operating system and an Intel Core2 Duo CPU P8700 @ 2.53GHz processor, and it works fine, showing all the keys in my keyboard; I was able to create a custom layout that worked without a hitch. However, when I tried the same procedure on the computer described in my SevenForums profile, the program showed on screen only the external frame; it does not show any key, thus the program is useless to create a custom layout. So far as I can understand, it seems a rendering error, but I am humble user, I have tried downloading and installing recommended Microsoft updates and the software suggested by the MKLC 1.4 page, but to no avail.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestion.

I've encountered a problem with the Outlook 2007 and Office 2007 ribbon interface a couple of times, where some areas of the interface and fonts become enlarged and take up more room than necessary on the screen resolution I'm using (1900x1200 on a 17" screen).
Each time this has happened, I've been unable to find a solution and have been forced to uninstall and reinstall Office.
Take a look at what I mean:

Microsoft Outlook 2007
Microsoft Word 2007
In addition to that, in Outlook, when the taskbar is enabled all I get is the following:

Outlook with Status Bar enabled
I had initially thought it might be an Accessibility feature to help users with impaired eyesight find options more easily, but I saw and found no evidence to support that theory and the status bar problem seems to indicate that it is a bug.

So I'm at the point of uninstalling/reinstalling again, but thought I would seek help in case I've overlooked something really obvious, or in hope of a possible fix.

I would greatly appreciate any help or suggestions anyone can offer.
Thanks in advance.

Vista: Appearance and Personalization --> Adjust font size (DPI)
XP: Display Properties --> Settings --> Advanced --> DPI setting.

Bottom line: Office only decides what goes on the display. How it is displayed is the function of Windows. Program that actually pay attention to the DPI request (like Office products) are affected. Other programs aren't.

Noticed this when I had accidentally selected Keep me signed in on a PC not belonging to me when checking my Outlook.com emails using Windows 7, IE10 and Outlook.com web interface. Need help to find out how to avoid this kind of situation.

Scenario: Opening Outlook.com with IE10. Logging in with my [email protected], accidentally selecting Keep me signed in. All is well, check mails, reply to a few, sign out, closed IE10, shut down the computer.

Was leaving when someone I was waiting to go with asked me to wait 10 more minutes. With extra time in my hands decided to check my other Hotmail account, too. Booted the same PC, opened IE10, went again to Outlook.com and to my surprise it opened to my outlook.com account I had checked earlier, directly without asking for credentials.

I was absolutely sure I had not only closed the IE10 and shut down the PC, but first selected Sign Out from Outlook.com menus. In my opinion this, selecting to log out / sign out should invalidate earlier Keep me signed in selection?

Opening Outlook.com on IE10, entering my [email protected] credentials and selecting Keep me signed in (this time deliberately):

Web interface opens, everything OK:

Selecting Sign Out:

Keep in mind that every system is different, even with the same OS and hardware so others problems may not reflect yours. If you ever want to revert to your older style (at present) then all you have to do is uninstall this pack.

Problem: Outlook starts normally with a POP3 account in a POP3 Outlook profile. However, I have a work Exchange account which I configured using instructions yesterday. Worked fine. Yet today, Outlook crashes - fails on opening Microsoft Exchange Account. Hangs and then forced exit produces Microsoft error report. On restarting, Outlook says that "outlookaddin.dll" caused a serious error and has been disabled. Disabling it means that Outlook no longer pulls down emails from Exchange. Re-enabling it causes the crash again, Catch-22.

Dell XPS M1210 - brand new.
Microsoft XP Professional SP2 (fully patched)
Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 SP2 (fully patched)
McAfee SecurityCenter pre-loaded by Dell.

I configured the Exchange profile yesterday and it worked fine. Changes -- possible cuplrits? -- in the meantime:

1. A large McAfee patch was installed semi-automatically.
2. Attempted to install Treo 650 Palm Hotsync. This did not complete successfully. Hung while hotsyncing to Outlook. Then uninstalled successfully.

What I've tried, but which does not fix the problem:

a. Detect and Repair run within Outlook completes successfully.
b. Disabled and uninstalled McAfee Spamkiller.
c. Remove the Exchange profile through Control Panel > Mail, and create a new one with a different name.

Suggestions very gratefully received!

Had this error on a user's pc. Researched it here on the forum.
Found another thread with someone suggesting to use the following command to get it going:
Start->run..then type the following -> "Outlook.exe /resetnavpane"

This worked! The other thread has since been closed, but I wanted to reply and say WHY my users outlook suddenly started throwing out this error, because no one on the other thread was able to.

Turns out that my user had "accidentally" dragged their personal folder (containing 1000's of emails) into the "outbox".
Since the "outbox" folder is one to be used while an email is in the sending phase, it basically just shut down and wouldn't open for anything.

Luckily the command was able to get Outlook open and I was able to investigate what the user did to cause it.

Hope this info can help someone else.

The system in question has Windows XP Professional, and MS Office 2000 Professional, the main reason for which is OUTLOOK. When Outlook cranks up it triggers an error message which is in my subject line:
"Outlook requires Microsoft Outlook Express 4.01 or greater....". The system of course also has OE6 on it which we don't use, but it does work etc.

The issue is me: I use autoruns to shut off everything non-mandatory, and, as another thread-poster identified, there is something in the list of goods that I have disabled that OE is dependent on, if I understand the old thread properly. The problem is that the poster [OP] in that thread said he found the key, but he didn't NAME THE ENTRIES
Thus, I dunno which ones he reversed that made the issue go away.

if anyone knows, pls let me know, so I can fix my goof.

Hello again kapilkaaiser,
I think you need to import the required info into Outlook 2007 -

In Outlook 2007, click File > Import and Export > Make the appropriate choices
> & hopefully the Import / Export Wizard will oblige.

Post back with your results.

I get the following error when trying to open Outlook. My computer updated last night. Outlook worked fine this morning, but then I got the "configuring updates do not power down" screen. Once the computer restarted, Outlook would not work:

cannot start MOO. Cannot open the outlook window. the set of folders cannot be opened. errors have been detected in the file. c:\users/Nikky\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst. Quit Outlook and all mail enabled applications, and then use the Inbox repair tool (scanpst.exe) to diagnose and repair errors in the file. for more information about the inbox repair tool, see help.

I have tried: Go to run and type outlook.exe / resetnavpane -did not work, I get the same error.

I have tried: Run and Scanpst.exe-I get windows cannot find the file.

I have tried a System restore-it could not be completed.

I have ran a windows office diagnostic, 1 problem found and fixed, however it did not correct the problem.
