Cannot connect to internet with Linksys WRT54GS; can connect with AirPort Express

Q: Cannot connect to internet with Linksys WRT54GS; can connect with AirPort Express

Hello everyone.

I would like to connect to the internet using my Linksys WRT54GS 1.1 router. However, even after I reset the router by pressing the reset button for 30 seconds, and plug the ethernet from the cable modem to the router, I can get only to the 192.168.1.1 (Setup) page, not to any internet.

The same cord and cable modem work with my Airport Express, but I want my WRT54GS router to connect wired to the modem, so I can use my AirPort to extend the network (i.e. I want two hotspots).

Any help?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

What is the brand and model of your cable modem?

If it is a modem only you need to power cycle (unplug for 30 seconds) it when switching the device connected to it.

Hi can you help me with the following:

My MacBook Pro laptop with OS X 10.4.9 says the following in regards to Network Status: "Airport is connected to the network Linksys. Airport has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet." I am signed onto the wireless network but I CAN'T connect to the internet. Do you have any idea what I should do (i.e. change IP address, etc) or twik it somehow or manually input the IP Address, Subnet Mask, etc? The security under Linksys is WEP. I would really appreciate your help! Thank you so much!

Salutations everyone. Thanks for giving a read through. Hopefully we can get this one nailed down cause I'm at my wits end. Some background info first.

A month ago my pc was hit with a nasty because McAfee failed on me big time. After getting rid of the nasty I noticed that I was able to connect to the internet but I could no longer browse my internal network.. couldn't even start the workstation service. Followed a lot of advice to no end and finally yesterday.. I did an in place install of the xp software.

It went without a hitch and now I can browse my internal network again however, I can no longer surf the web. This is where it gets strange. ok so.. I pull the network card drivers, disconnect the linksys router along with the comcast gateway.. reboot into safe mode to make sure all indications of the card are gone. so far so good.. reboot into normal mode again and install the network card drivers and reboot. Reconnect the linksys router and the comcast gateway and viola!, limited or no connectivity. awwwww... to bad so sad. Anyway, I fiddle around with the network connection settings by assigning dns, i get connected but still can't surf and as soon as i go back to automatic ip assignment, limited or no connection. Now when i connect the pc directly to the comcast gateway.. boom! surfs up. Interestingly.. my other computer that is tethered to the Linksys Router that is tethered to the comcast gateway has no issue at all. I've reset the Linksys rout... Read more

I just got a new laptop with an Intel WiFi Link 1000 BGN network card.

When I plug the ethernet cable in the laptop it works fine but when I try to connect to the router wireless, it says it cannot connect.

I have tried unplugging the router and the signal is strong. I have set "network discovery" in the settings.

I have never used wireless before. I assume it's something simple. What other steps do I need to take?

I have noticed the signal from the router is VERY strong, then a minute later, it's not even listed. Do I need to set up a wireless network on the router? or do they automatically send out the signal?

I also set up WPA (personal) on the router. It asks for the password and says "Windows could not connect"

So here is the challenge. I have had this router for years. I constantly use both my laptop and desktop PC for it. I have not made any major changes in a long time and it all of a sudden decides it no longer likes my PC. I have tried many things on this site which works temporarily for a few hours, and then it goes back out again.
So, since it is primarily an issue with the PC, I receive a connection to the PC from the router, but the Linksys info page says 'You are connected to the access point, but the internet cannot be found'. Any ideas?

I have a Linksys WUSB54GS wireless adapter connected to an HP PC running XP Home. I also have a Linksys WRT54GS wireless router connected to a cable modem. The wireless router works great all through the house with my home laptop and my office laptop when I bring it home.
The problem is with the usb adapter on the PC. It says that I have an excellent and strong signal but I cannot connect to the internet. If I snake a 100 ft long ethernet cable through the house, I can connect the PC instantly to the internet. Then I can disconnect the ethernet cable and remain connected with the usb wireless adapter. If I reboot, it says it is connected to the network with a strong signal but cannot find the Internet. I have tried several uninstalls and reinstalls. No change. On rare occasions, it will find the internet. I have moved the wireless router around but cannot get any better signal on the wireless adapter on the PC - it is shown as strong and excellent.
I would appreciate any help that anyone can give me.

I recently set up a Linksys WRT54GS wireless router and it's been working perfectly up until this morning when my brother accidentally opened the Linksys EasyLink Advisor from the system tray and immediately exited. After that, the WLAN light went out on the router and there's no active internet connection detected coming from the router (currently plugged straight into the modem). 192.168.1.1 (to access the router settings) no longer loads as well.

To note, I'm running Vista on the laptop that's now connected to the internet (not sure if that will make a difference in troubleshooting the problem though).

A:WLAN light and internet connection lost on Linksys WRT54GS

Turn off the modem and the router.
Turn on the modem, wait for a steady data light.
Turn on the router, wait two minutes.
Reboot the connected computer.
After the computer boots, please post the following.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

I've got two WRT54G's that I would like to wirelessly bridge, so that I can have a 4 port access anywhere in the house, for non-wifi items.
The setup I currently have is, Modem connected to one router, (My main), and the from there I would like to wirelessly connect to the main router from a secondary of the same type.

My previous attempts have failed because of vauge directions, and my lack of networking experience, so please be gentle with your terminology.
What I am looking for is a guide for me to do this, and someone to explain it for me, because I have no idea why previous attempts have not worked...

A:Linksys WRT54G router can't connect to internet

Let's try my reset procedure and get some information about what's happening.

The following procedure should get you a connection with any broadband modem that is configured to use DHCP for the router connection, such as cable modems, and many DSL modems. If you require PPPoE configuration for the DSL modem, that will have to be configured to match the ISP requirements.

Note that the wireless encryption and channel selection will have to be done after the basic wired connection is established, the first step is to get wired connections working.

Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on.
Turn off everything, the modem, router, computer.
Connect the modem to the router's WAN/Internet port.
Connect the computer to one of the router's LAN/Network ports.
Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect light.
Turn on the router, wait for two minutes.
Boot the computer.

When the computer is completely booted, let's see this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous command output!

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

Updated firmware
Set the IP address to 192.168.2.1 and the modem to 192.168.1.1
Reset router and modem
Powered on and off and on and off and on...

I have tried using the Windows WZC utility instread of the Linksys WLAN utility. When I do this, I still get the message: "You are currently connected to this network... and "acquiring network address."

Hi,
I am running windows 7, 64 bit and have been having an issue with my Linksys E1500 router recently that has my ISP, myself and the few people I have talked to stumped.

My router will respond to pings from my laptop both wirelessly and when connected via ethernet cable, and will respond to pings from my ISP, but it won't allow my laptop to connect to the internet. I have rest and reconfigured the router a bunch of times, leaving the MAC address alone, cloning it to my laptop's ethernet port, and cloning it to my wireless cards MAC addresses, respectively. None of that allows it to connect.
Linksys (Cisco) has been useless in helping both via their site and when contacted, encouraging me to pay $40 to talk to someone who MAY be able to help.

Anyone have any ideas why the router is doing this and what I can do to fix it?

Note: The router worked fine for about 4 months, then one morning, couldn't connect to the internet through it. Have to connect directly from the modem via ethernet cable.

Thanks for any insight.

Hello gann17 and welcome to the forums!

That's a rather comprehensive list of troubleshooting steps you've performed there. Kudos to you, for the effort you've undertaken before posting here.

I'm the furthest thing from being a Networking Guru;I'm still learning quite a bit daily from the hang ups of my own networking devices, so bear with me here.

I've just two questions for you, with regards to your router and its connectivity.

Have you tried using any other internet devices (laptops, desktops, tablets etc.) with that router to connect to the Internet?

You've also mentioned that you tried to reset and reconfigure the router 'a bunch of times'; did those steps include flashing a newer or older version of the firmware for your router?

Thanks.

Linksys makes a great 4 port router/switch combo.

It works out of the box and shouldn't cost more than about $70.

The manual is clear and well laid out and I hear that their tech support is good. you won't need it though. It is very easy.

Connect your RCN cable to the "WAN" port, connect the Apple and the Dell to any one of Port 1, 2, 3 or 4. In business.

you need to set the default gate way on your pc to the default on the linksys..
you can acces a configuration window through a browser just enter the ip addres of the router as a url and this should bring up a configuration window..
the reason the laptop is fine is because the wireless card will pick up the gateway automatically you will need to set it on the pc which im presuming is wired to the router..

It try's to detect the internet but can't and shows me a picture on how to set it up. I go back into the Network connections folder and the internet icon has disappeared.

This time I can't and I probably changed some settings and now I can't get connected through wire connection as well.
All other computers in the house work wireless except hers.
Using a Linksys WRT54G router.

I need to get this working as she needs her computer for school work.

I hope somebody can HELP!

Thanks

I have a T450 running Windows 10. I purchased it less than a year ago. I recently upgraded my home router to an apple airport extreme. My computer shows a strong signal yet can't connect to the main network. Somehow it can connect to a guest network on the same account but it is very slow. I believe there may be some issue with the AC7625 wireless card working with the apple product as I've seen in other forums. Has anyone experienced this or have any ideas on how to fix? Thanks.

My computer worked fine on my pervious linksys router.

at the studio where i work, we have an airport express wireless hub thing (sorry, i'm not terribly computer literate). everyone with a mac can connect effortlessly to it. i can connect with my ipod touch as well. anyone with a pc gets a 'limited connectivity' message and can't connect to the internet.

we all get a little icon indicating that there is internet available, but we just can't hook up to it. i have a dell laptop which runs vista. that didn't work. i figured i'd bring in my little acer aspire one netbook, but that didn't want to hook up either.

i had read that there was an update i could download to fix the problem, but that ended up being a dead link. i looked all through the airport settings on the studio computer, and nothing seems to be anti-pc. i know the password to sign in (i used it on the ipod) so i know that it's not that.

does anyone have any idea what i could do? it may have something to do with security, because when my co-worker tested the main computer and took off the 'security enabled' setting, i was able to log on. we just want our connection to be secure, and that's what seems to kick me off.

any ideas? it would really be convenient to be able to use my laptop at work like everyone else with a mac does....
thank you.

A:Solved: wireless airport extreme won't connect to pc

well, i managed to find the answer to my own question on another site. i'm going to post it here in case anyone else has this problem and the solution i found could help them.

i had to go into the mac at the studio. i:
-used the finder to locate the airport express unit and clicked on it
-open the airport admin window
-double click on the airport and look for the padlock icon at the top of the screen.
-click on that to get the WEP key (different than the security code)
-write it down. i think mine was about 26 alphanumeric digits long.
-go into your pc and access the desired mac internet connection.
-enter the WEP key code that you just wrote down in the section as the security code.
-DONE! that's how i got the mac at work and my pc "to be friends".

thanks to all who considered helping.

I have a Linksys WRT54G version 1 router. My basic problem is I can't seem to connect to the Internet. My PC can connect to the router and it can detect my Internet settings, but I can't actually connect to the net. There's nothing wrong with my Internet connection. I can still connect to the Internet through my old Linksys BEFW1154 v2 router easily.

I've updated the firmware on my Linksys WRT54G router and I've reset all the settings to factory defaults. Originally I had two Vista OS PCs, an XBox 360, a PS3, wired to the router and I've connected one XP OS PC and a Tivo to the router wirelessly. Right now I'm trying to apply my old config to the new router. My primary PC is wired. I've already checked my Ethernet cables and I've made sure that the modem is connected to the plug labeled Internet on the WRT router.

I'm not 100% on the terminology, but I believe I'm only connected to my router locally. Originally my new router couldn't even detect the Internet through my ARRIS tm402 Touchstone Modem. The status page would display all 0s for the dns addresses. My new router wasn't able to detect the net until I contacted Comcast and had them reset my modem. As I mentioned, now my router can detect the net, but my PC can't actually access the net. I thought the problem might be with my PC, but as it turns out my XBox 360 and other PC (which are both wired) also can't access the net. I really need some h... Read more

I have two Apple laptops running well on an Airport Extreme wireless network. I am trying to connect a Dell Windows XP Service Pack 3 to the Airport via a USB to Ethernet LAN cable directly to the Airport for internet access. The Times Warner cable guy hooked it up and it accessed the internet just fine. I have since reformatted and reloaded Windows. I have not changed any of the cable connections. I have tried the Windows Network Wizard and the Airport Utility (which cannot detect the Airport). Windows says I have a "LAN or High-Speed Internet 1394 Connection" connected. However, Windows cannot find any internet access. The cable guy had it hooked up and on the internet in just a couple of minutes. Before I reformatted I noticed another connected network, not the 1394. Please help me get the Dell on the Airport via USB to Ethernet LAN cable for internet access. Thanks in advance for your help.

A:Connect Windows PC to Airport Extreme via Ethernet cable

Install the chipset drivers from your Drivers/Resource CD or, better, from Dell's web site. Use your Service Tag for easier searching. Then check in Device Manager to see if there are still more missing drivers.

EDIT: You probably need the driver for the USB ethernet adapter also.

I was trying to setup Apple Airport Express today and in the process it created its own network. Because of that, when I try to connect to my own home network on that computer, it says it can't connect. It's just a problem with that computer. Every other computer can connect to the internet. Thanks in advance.

Hi all - brand new to the site and not tech savvy- but like to fix things myself. I've recently purchased an Apple Airport Express wireless router for my home. Comcast is our provider running through an Arris model TM602G/CT modem. We have 3 computers connected (1 desktop, 2 laptops). The desktop and Dell laptop work perfectly, but the Toshiba Satellite A215-55837 running Windows Vista Home says it is connected to the airport with excellent signal strength, but will not connect to any website, trying to use Internet Explorer or Google Chrome. Message 'Website page not available'. Any ideas why I can't get to the Internet and solutions to get there? Thanks

I just bought this laptop about 10 days ago to use specifically for a writing project separate from my other work laptop. It has Windows 7. It had Google Chrome installed (or maybe my brother installed it upon taking it out of the box.) I have
used IE as my browser on this laptop once or twice, but mostly use Google Chrome. I downloaded some genealogy software I just bought today about an hour or so ago (Family Tree Maker 2012) and noticed that it would not connect to the internet to register- it
kept saying "No internet connection". After trying a few things (allowing the program access through Windows Firewall, checking to make sure that "proxy server" tab was not checked in Internet Settings, disabling some Bing Maps and Windows
Live email accelerators) and finally tried closing Chrome and opening IE to run in background instead. However, IE won't connect - keeps saying "Cant display webpage" although I am definitely connected to internet via wifi. I tried resetting Internet
Explorer...no dice. I've restarted several times. Nothing is working. Any suggestions?
My husband thinks i should uninstall Chrome, which he guesses is causing all the trouble with both IE and the Family Tree software. But I'm afraid that if I uninstall Chrome and it doesnt work, i wont be able to get back on the internet since I can presently
only do so through Chrome.
I dont have a whole lot of experience troubleshooting computers, so please be spec... Read more

A:IE won't connect to internet, but Chrome is working fine. Other software wont connect to internet either.

Uninstalling Chrome should not be nessesary it does have an agressive default install which should not be used but uninstalling will not fix any issues because chromes uninstall will not change
setting back the way they were before you installed it/ or who ever.
Reset ie9 manually,
Click the Start button on the Taskbar,
Click on Control panel,
Click on Internet options,
Go to the Advanced section,
Click on Reset button on the bottom,
Check the box to Delete personal settings,
Use the recommended setup and install options.

Just got off the phone with Verizon. They had me push the reset button and I was able to connect to the internet again. I mentioned how slow it takes for pages to load. She said if I have two firewalls running that can happen, then eventually it blocks your internet connection. I have the free Avira and am only using the Windows Firewall. She said the Verizon router has a firewall but it's a low security. So I went on the internet was able to get on some sites, but then others wouldn't connect again, said there is no internet connection. All the lights on the router are on. So far it's still working, but this is what happened before when I lost my connection completely.

I have Windows XP, tried it both on IE 8 and Firefox. The router is an Actiontec MI42WR. The problem was with both my desktop and laptop wired connections.

Have a USB wireless WiFi unit. To connect to the Internet. Have to disable the Local Area Connection. When connected to the Internet. If I enable the Local Area Connection. Unable to connect to the Internet. When I disable the LAC, the Internet connection is restablished. Using a D-Link boradband VPN router.

A:Wireless Network Connection will only connect to Internet if Lcl Area Connect disable

sounds about right! Your big issue will be the VPN, as it is frequently specifically
config'd to use a specific adaptor AND to force all tcp traffic thru that connection,
even though you want to do some trivial google.com search.

Consider using a Hardware Profile to define
1) a LAN connection environment (ie no WiFi)
2) a WiFi environment (w/o a LAN)

the choice occurs at boot time and the hardware is enabled/disabled per
the profile.

Hello guys,

I have just finished my very first computer build and am rather happy with most things.

Unfortunately I am having problems connecting to the internet.

I have a temporary dongle in place and because it's my only option for about a month I kinda need it to work.

When I first connected it I found my connection and I successfully connected, I downloaded Google Chrome and Steam, then unfortunately it randomly stopped working.

Where the strength bar should of been, there was a large red cross, when I found my connection it read "The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network." I Googled this and people said delete your connection and reconnect, that didn't work, so then I tried to set my security type to something different or off as recommended in a solved post, the problem persisted.

Now after restarting my computer several times it sometimes rejects my password, or comes up with the "the settings for the network..." and on rare occasions it connects then 5 minutes later comes up wit my original problem.

I have tried resetting my connection details as what is saved on my laptop and mac and they don't work either.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Regards, Lee.

Connected by etherent ?
Have you also tried the same cable and port with a different PC

It maybe a security suite blocking - do you have Norton , McAfee etc

post a ipconfig /all and ping tests when connected by ethernet cable only

{ipconfig /all}
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here
We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results here
-> Start
-> (XP - enter the following in the RUN box)
cmd /k ipconfig /all

cmd /k ipconfig /all

A black box will appear on the screen -
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy

then reply here and

I have a lenovo u160 running windows 7, a couple of days ago it seemed my computer was infected with something, giving a series of security warnings I had not seen before (not av security suite). It slowed the computer down for a few minutes.

After closing these messages, there seemed to be no problem, but then my computer was no longer connect to the internet. It connects to our router/wireless network, but not to the internet.

I tried resetting and unplugging the router and the modem, but still no luck. We have two other computers on the same network that are connecting to both the network and the internet.

I tried running rkill and malwarebytes twice and no malicious items were detected.

I restored the computer to an earlier point (2-3 days earlier)

On the toolbar in the bottom right of the taskbar, it shows a 5 white signal bars, with a "!" inside a yellow triangle.
If I click on the network button it states it is "connected" to the network. It describes the connection as "excellent" (4-5/5 bars).

Above the display of the available networks, it states

"currently connected to:
Unidentified network
No Internet access"

I am not computer savvy and have not run into this problem before. Thanks for your time and help.
