Problems accessing intranet sites

Q: Problems accessing intranet sites

Hi

I'm not sure that anyone can help me with this problem but I'd like to ask.

DETAILS:

IBM Thinkpad T22 Laptop
Windows 2000 Professional

A user at our company connects to an internal intranet website. The web server is located in the US (we are in the UK) and so its a bit slow but ok.

When he gets to a certain site he clicks a link that should open an Excel document. He clicks the link and his pc appears to freeze up. I checked task manager and IE is still running, cpu usage is around 3%. If you wait for 8 minutes (timed it a few times) the document opens up fine.

I logged the user off and logged on as myself. I accessed the link and the document opend up with 10 seconds!

Things I have tried:

1. Ran an IE browser repair.
2. Rebuilt the users Windows 2000 Profile.
3. Deleted Temp Internet Files including Index.dat
4. Detect and Reapir in Excel (just in case!)

Its not a major problem but the document should open up in about 10-15 seconds instead of 8 minutes.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

Regards

Pileyrei

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello
We are testing Windows 10 1703 prior to rolling it out to our estate and have come across an issue with Internet Explorer Site Zoning and just wondering if anyone else has seen the issue.
So on Windows 7, 8.1 and Windows 10, 1511 and 1607 using IE11. We have a SharePoint intranet site setup on intranet.example.co.uk. We use a proxy so we have a list of sites that by pass the proxy so for example we have *.example.co.uk in the bypass
proxy exceptions. On the above clients OS we browse to the site in IE and it loads, checking the zone it has picked it up as 'Local Intranet' so seems to use the 'Automatic logon on in Intranet Zone' setting. - all good.
Just for clarity these settings are same in IE on all versions. as are the default security options.

When we do the same thing on Windows 10 1703 it results in the user being prompted for credentials. the same proxy exceptions settings are applied as above. Entering the username/password allows access to the site. Checking the zone and the site is
being seen as an 'internet site'. This issue also appears in Chrome and Edge and only on Windows 10 1703
Adding intranet.example.co.uk to the bypass list makes no difference either, the only thing that does work is by adding intranet.example.co.uk into the Local Intranet Zone sites list - again all other settings are the same as above and work on
previous versions of Windows.
So the question is has Microsoft changed something in IE o... Read more

I have a Win2000 machine with IE6 installed. I also have the latest security updates from Microsoft installed and do the Windows Update process regularly. This machine is a work laptop and I have to frequently access/visit SSL sites for my work. On my work LAN, I have no problems doing this. However, whenever I take my laptop at connect to another network (eg. the ISP I have at home), I always get a "Page Cannot be Found" error when trying to go to those same SSL sites. I do not change any settings on my browser of course when I use it outside of our work LAN.

My MSN Messenger also seems to be similarly effected in that when I am at work (on that LAN) I am able to log in and use the application without any problems. However, when I am outside of our work LAN, I cannot log in (I get an error about the authentication server not being found or something like that). I believe that the IE settings and the MSN Messenger settings are connected.

Does anyone have any ideas about what might be causing this?

Please download HijackThis. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Run a scan and save the log file. Post the whole log file here. Do not fix anything since most of them listed there are harmless (some are system required). This program will help us determine if there is any spyware/malware on your computer.

Hi to the group
I have a very strange problem with IE8, but it is also the same in Google Chrome and Firefox so it is not a browser problem.

IE8 works perfectly and loads all sites perfectly except two!!! One is eBay UK and the other is a Google group. To show how crazy this is is to tell you that eBay US works perfectly.

I have noticed that when I try to load those two sites the address does not enter the address bar as for all other sites. After about 20 seconds the "cannot access this page appears".

This is what I've tried:

1) Disabling my firewall to try to load this. Without success.
2) Clearing cache
2) Other browsers

It is driving me crazy. Can anyone help.

Thanks to anyone who thinks about it for me!!

Hi larrylustig and welcome to TSF.

Have you checked your Host file?

First you need to check that you have hidden files and folders showing and not hidden (default)

Control Panel>Folder Options>View tab>check Show Hidden Files and Folders

Now navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\Hosts Use Notepad to view the contents of the Hosts file. Make sure that there is no mention of ebay or the Google Group there. If you are not sure, then it is safe to post it here for us to look at.

The last few days... on one of my PCs using dial-up (NetZero PLATINUM) I am not able to acess certain sites... but am able to access others.

For instance, if I try to access GOOGLE, YAHOO, WEB-ATTACK or even THIS forum... I get the following ERROR message.

res://C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SHDOCLC.DLL/dnserror.htm#http://www.google.com/
in that instance, it was for GOOGLE. I have another PC hooked up to cable... and the sites are up and running so I know it is not site related.

Then .... I click on the option of DETECT NETWORK SETTINGS... and NOTHING happens.

Now.... this error message only happens on some sites (maybe 30%) or so... but these are sites I frequent, while all of the others work just fine.

I am using IE6 and Win 98se, and have for a few years now and have had NONE of these troubles.

Any suggestions? Why is it happening to some sites, and not others considering I have done nothing browser related on my PC in a few years?

Any help, would be very much appreciated.

Thank you

DAVID

I hope this is the right message board to post this to. I'm having trouble accessing password-protected sites on my home computer. I'm running Windows XP, and the problem is happening on both IE and Mozilla. Whenever I try to access sites such as Hotmail, my work e-mail account, my bank account and other similar sites, I get the "The page cannot be displayed" page. In some cases (Hotmail, my bank account), I can access the login page. But the problem occurs when I enter my passwords and hit "submit." The same thing happens with Mozilla. I get the "Unable to Connect" page. I can, however, login to sites such as washingtonpost.com and nytimes.com.

I installed CCleaner yesterday to clean up some lingering files. I also worked with the stuff on the "content" tab of the Internet Options box in Explorer. Otherwise, my computer usage has been the same as it always has been.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I have a bit of as stumper. An employee's laptop is connected to the network just fine, she sees her mapped drives, gets to the Exchange server and browses the internet. But when she tries to access our internal-only intranet website, she gets a 404 error.

I noticed when she gets the 404 error, the address changes in the bar. We have our intranet set by group policy in the browser options as http://xxx.xxxx.org/, but when the 404 error displays the address in the bar is http;//xxx.xxxx.org/cgi-bin/restart. I have no idea where that is coming from. I checked with our web guys and they don't know what that address is either.

IE is locked down by group policy, nothing in the options window can be changed by the user. I have uninstalled all other browsers and toolbars (thank you Adobe) and cleared all caches. This employee is the only one having the problem.

Can anyone point me in the right direction or give me a hint on where or what to look at?

It seems that something is affecting my Internet Explorer. I haven't had any problems with this before. When I manually type in a URL it takes a minute or two to go to the page. IF I use a link from the same site saved as a bookmark the site loads instantly. I was able at one point to configure my firewall (Zone Alarm Pro) by forcing all programs to ask permission to access the Internet. One by one each program made the request. I then launched IE and my homepage came up. When I typed in an URL a program asked permission to access the Internet and I blocked it and the browser reacted normally by going to the requested URL. That doesn't work anymore.

I have had Hughes.net satellite internet for the past 2 years, and although it is less than ideal, I was able to work from home which requires me to access three specific secure sites. Recently Hughes.net came out with a new modem and dish - the HN9000. This uses some new technology and KA band waves. They said it would be considerably faster and not nearly as sensitive to weather conditions. They installed the new system yesterday, and it is everything they said it would be - blazing fast and the overcast day had no impact on my signal or speed.

However, when I tried to access the three websites I need for work, I keep getting the message Page Cannot be Displayed. All 3 of these sites are in my Trusted Sites area.

One thing I noticed that is different from the previous configuration is in Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings. The option for "Use a Proxy Server for your LAN" is now checked, and under the ADVANCED tab, the HTTP: and Secure: items have the proxy server address and port information (which has been verified by 3 different tech support people at Hughes.net). Under Exceptions, it lists the IP Address that I connect to Hughes.net with.

With this proxy server setting configured, I cannot browse to ANY web pages at all. If I remove it, I can browse to any website except for the 3 https:// sites I need to access for work.

I have tried this with both Internet Explorer and Firefox, and get the same result with both browser... Read more

I have, what seems to me, a strange problem. The company I work for uses sharepoint for our intranet sites (no, this is not a sharepoint question) and we have recently upgraded to a new version. When we upgraded, the site now needs to be added to the local
intranet site list in order for it to automatically receive windows log in credentials and log users in to SharePoint. This is a simple fix, I have done it on dozens of machines, but on a select few the fix doesn't seem to work. Whenever I add a website to
the intranet sites list, it acts as if it was added... then as soon as I close the dialog box that is used to enter and display this info, it's gone, and by gone I mean I open back up the box and it has disappeared from the list. There is no trace of me ever
having changed a setting. There are currently no GPOs active that would cause these to be taken out of the list, I have tried adding the sites directly into the registry and they disappear there too, I'm not sure if this is the right place for my question
but I figure it's a start. So again:
Problem: Sites do not stay in proper security zone, all traces of them existing are erased on closing of dialog box.

Troubleshooting Done so Far: Tried directly placing in registry, no fix. No GPO's are active to remove said sites from zones.

A:IE 11 - Intranet sites added to list do not stay

Hi,
"but on a select few the fix doesn't seem to work"
Confused with this sentence, does this issue only occur in a specific PC\user account?
Have you tried the suggestion mentioned in the your original thread to reset IE, test the result?
What about other security zones, like Internet or trusted zone? Are there any other websites under the Intranet zone? Though you mentioned that these's no GPO applied to control this, I still recommend you run cmd rsop to check the settings applied
on this machine and user account.

Hi,

We have an odd issue. IE11 is running all sites in compatibility mode. This appears to be because it is treating all sites as being in the Intranet Zone. This is:
a) breaks many websites that require modern browsers
b) is a huge security issue as many protections are disabled by default on the intranet zone.

Has anyone else seen this or have ideas on what we can do to solve it.

I will add that we have autodetect proxy settings enabled, and wpad hosts a proxy.pac that instructs browsers to go direct to all websites.

Thanks

Nick

Hi, i am looking for a policy that will allow me to uncheck 'display intranet sites in compatibility view' without graying out the option to recheck it if a user needs the option in the future. So far the only option i found under Computer
Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Internet Explorer/Compatibility View/Turn on Internet Explorer Standards Mode for Local Intranet would gray out the option to recheck the box.

Dear all

I have used the Microsoft Internet Explorer Administration Kit to produce a branded version of IE.

I have placed all the files on our Intranet server (NT/IIS4) and given that particular folder full rights to everyone - (unnecessary as it didn't help). The files can be individually downloaded (e.g. ie5setup.exe) but when it runs to fails to locate the others.

Any suggestions?

A:Trouble accessing some sites

Greg
Welcome to TSG!
Here are some of the reason some sites cannot be accessed which means they are blocked.

1) Firewalls
2) Browser Restrictions
3) Security set to High in Browser
4) Hosts file has block set
5) Pop-up Stopper programs

Let us know what OS you are running and what Browser\version you are using plus if any errors are occuring and what are they, plus what exactly is happening when you try to access the site.

Note: If you have 1 or 5 try shutting them down then access site.

When certain sites load, a popup appears, asking for user name and password. This occurs on MSN's weather site, for example, so it would not be directly related to a suspicious site...unless perhaps it's a side reaction to banners or loggers.Example: Going to http://weather.msn.com/local.aspx?wealocations=wc:USNY0996Popup has a pic of one gold key and one silver key on a ring. Its title bar says: Connecting to ac2.msn.comBelow, there are edit boxes for entering: User name: .... Password: ...And a checkbox for "Remember my password"This occurs every time that page is accessed. It does look like the address is a banner or something (not sure what "ac2" is within the MSN.com domain.I've also seen similar reactions on other sites. Some bring up "bp.specificclick.net" or other domains, though that is not the domain of the page being accessed. The popup itself always looks the same, except for the title bar.Spybot and MalwareBytes do not find anything.Any ideas about the cause?

Earlier this week certain web sites stopped loading on both of my two Win 7 laptops AND both of our WiFi iPads. For example, Google does not load but Amazon comes in fine. When I plug the cable modem directly into one of the laptops everything works fine, but that doesn't help my other laptop or the iPads.

At first I thought the router had fried (LinkSys E3000), so I bought and installed a Netgear N600/WNDR3700. When I switched routers I unplugged the modem for about 5 minutes per the instructions. The new router did not solve the problem. In fact, no change at all. Pandora, yes. Gmail, no. There is a reset button on the modem (Scientific Atlanta 2100) but I am afraid to use it, for fear that I will lose all of the internet.

I pinged yahoo and received good responses, then pinged Google and got nothing. But pinging Google works fine when I am plugged directly into the modem.

I am at wits end. I am considering hiring someone, but am concerned that he won't be able to figure this one out either. Can any of you experts help?

First thing to try is accessing the site in Internet Explorer. Then you need to make sure your computer is free of viruses!

Have a new HP Pavilion computer with Windows 8.1 installed. Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, I can access most Web sites okay, but not others. Among those I cannot access are www.microsoft.com and www.amazon.com. My wife has a computer running Windows 7 and can access those sites okay. My computer and my wife's computer use a wireless router to connect to a cable modem, so it doesn't seem that the problem is with the router or modem. Also, before getting the new computer, my previous computer (that died) connected to all Web sites okay using the same router etc.
I took the new computer to a local computer repair shop and, with the computer running there, had no problem connecting to any Web site.
This problem has me and several "experts" I have consulted baffled. Nobody seems to have heard of a problem like this before.
I'll welcome all suggestions about how I can solve this problem.

Hey mate,

What antivirus program are you using? If you're using one you installed or it was preinstalled, and if you don't mind, just for the case of fully troubleshooting, I'd like you (at least temporarily) to remove it, which will force your computer to use the built-in Defender AV for now. BUT - remove it with an uninstaller. Revo Uninstaller Free works great, and sometimes the AV website itself offers a tool to remove it. Don't worry, Defender will protect your computer just fine, but may require a restart after you remove any other AV installed. Double-check that you've removed ALL AV programs, protections, toolbars, etc.

Reset IE completely: How to reset Internet Explorer settings ENSURING that you also delete personal settings by clicking the checkbox. If you have things you do not want to lose, then save them via export/import (import after we finish troubleshooting): Internet Explorer - Import and Export Favorites - Windows 7 Help Forums

Make sure ALL important and recommended MS updates are installed via control panel. Restart computer.

Run an antimalware program that is free, and widely regarded as one of the best. Select the free version, and after the install, uncheck the 30 day trial period to ensure you get the complete free version: https://www.malwarebytes.org/
Update it, and let it 'threat scan' your computer. If it finds anything, select to quarantine. Let me know how this goes, and we'll continue if you still have problems.

I have been connected to AOL 9.0 (Gold) on my desktop since August using a Belkin ADSL Modem with Wireless G Router. All is working very well - no problems - I can access all websites that I wish to access quite quickly on the desktop. I have now bought a laptop with wireless for Christmas for my son. The laptop has picked up the router signal and connection is very strong - no problems accessing the BBC.co.uk site and various others (eg Currys Electrical). But ... I cannot access Ebay and MSN Messenger and FaceParty (which my son would like to use to "chat"). We get the message "cannot find server" and "page cannot be displayed" on the main page. I am really confused as to why some sites can be accessed but some can't (and the ones he really wants can't be accessed - typical!).

Have tried adding the sites manually to "restricted sites" area but still can't access them even tho I have added the full address http:// etc.

Is it is router or AOL who is the problem?? I think they are going to advise me to upgrade to platinum - which I really don't want to do.

Have contacted AOL online help but the information I have been given all involves using AOL (ie .. once you are on AOL type Securefix into the browser address bar at the top of your AOL Desktop)... I don't have AOL on the laptop!!

Why it worked? Ok when you went thru and put the lines into the run and executed them you actually re-registered them into the registry. These are or where files that were not properly setup and now are.
