How to get BT working on Win8.1 + Dell XPS 1340?

Q: How to get BT working on Win8.1 + Dell XPS 1340?

Thanks to this great forum I was able to install Win 8.1 on my laptop (Dell Studio XP 1340).
Resolved here: Windows 8.1 RTM installation fails on Dell XPS 1340
As per advice I got here I had to disable Bluetooth in BIOS to be able to install the system.

Now with the system up and running I would like to use Bluetooth. The device is not listed in Device Manager and no driver was installed. When I enable it in BIOS system will not start, it crashes with error (https://www.dropbox.com/s/l8ith0xljh...2020.34.11.jpg).

I found the driver which should be installed. So with Bluetooth still disabled I tried to install it. It's in exe so I can't really get the driver files. The SW asks for Bluetooth to be activated by a switch. I have a button which normally turns Wifi+Bluetooth on/of .. but with BT disabled it does not work, obviously. And the only option is 'Cancel':

Any ideas or experience with this?
Thank you!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I don't suppose the .exe is a compressed folder with a self extractor? If so, you might be able to open it with something like 7Zip and see the files inside.

I've spend countless hours and days trying to fix this stupid machine. I usually get 2 BSODS a day, when I updated all my drivers and updated fully through windows update I got all sorts of BSOD (irql, memory_management, win32k), but when I reformat the laptop fresh and install the newest drivers from the manufacturer the most common BSOD is IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.

Thanks a ton in advance! This stupid dell has caused me many sleepless nights, and I'm in the middle of my exams

P.S. I've already done memtest86 and /chkdisk, 6 passes with memtest with no errors, and no errors found with /chkdisk

I can get it to enter S3 just find but S4 will not work. I have checked the control panel power options. I have run powerconfig -h on. I have tried ending every non-essential process and service to see if one of them was causing it. Still didn't work. I have tried re-enabling the paging files (I had it disabled to save battery power). Still nothing. I could not find a hibernation file on the hard drive. There is plenty of space for it. Even typing powercfg -h -size 100 did not work. I have tried reinstalling my graphics card driver. I have checked the BIOS, still nothing. I just can't seem to figure it out. Has anyone else had a problem like this. I am running Windows 7 x64.

if you own a dell studio xps 1340 and either subscribe to computrace lojack for laptops, or it came bundled with your computer , you might want to know that either the bios agent in this computer is either missing or actually broken. when activating computrace in the bios, it is actually doing nothing.
some time ago i upgraded to wirdows vista utiltmate from home premium . this is when my laptop stopped contacting the monitoring center for 30 days.
i reinstalled computrace and started contacting the center.
when i called absolute.com for support. they informed me that although the m1330 has the bios agent, they say that the xps 1340 is not on thier list of supported machines.
i opened up my dell xps 1340 and put in a spare sata drive and wiped it, and used the windows vista cd that came with the computer and installed vista
after creating a user name. and rebooting a couple times. i see no evidence that the bios agent actually reinstalled it. when computrace is working
you should see their process running in task manager. after wiping the hard drive, the computrace installation did not automatically recover.
if you got computrace either bundled or purchased seperately, you should be aware of this, in case your xps 1340 gets stolen. it may never come back.
i tried calling the xps support team today, but after discussing it. they have no idea what im talking about or how to contact the bios team

A:dell studio xps 1340 and computrace .lojack for laptops , warning!

comptrace lojack says:
There is nothing wrong with the Lojack for Laptops license on your machine. It is successfully installed and it is communicating with our monitoring center. The Computrace agent which is embedded on the BIOS of specific makes and models of machines is not included on your machine so the fact that the Computrace agent is not reinstalling LoJack after a hard drive format is normal for your machine. The only problem with your machine is simply the Computrace appears on the BIOS which has lead you to believe that your machine is equipped with Computrace. If you are looking for a machine that is equipped with a Computrace agent, I would recommend getting this machine replaced with a machine that is equipped with one. Pretty much any of the Dell machines that are listed on the absolute website will be equipped with a Computrace agent.

When plugged into power it doesn't blue screen as often, maybe twice. When on battery power it almost crashes within an hour. The issue I'm having is its always a different blue screen and different drivers. I have tested and replaced the memory, the motherboard, even the battery, still no luck. I have a 1340 with 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium which fails to load Windows and goes straight to disc repair which is unable to fix the problem. The first few times the error message from disc repair was "found 1 error:boot critical file D:\windows\system32\drivers\amdxata.sys is corrupt and "problem signature 7". More recently disc repair displays "cannot find the cause of the problem" or "no operating system found".
System restore doesn't find a restore point and "load last working configuration" doesn't work either.
The last thing I did before this occurred was to attempt to update the NVidea 9400M video drivers via the NVidea updater. After leaving the laptop to update for a few hours I noticed no progress on the updater progress bar and closed the machine down thinking the update had hung. Whether or not this was the cause of my problem I don't know. Bios is version A11.

"The laptop has been running slow for a few weeks and also very hot with the fan going full speed most of the time."
This is probably the root of the problem - address it first.  If you have never cleaned out the inside of the system, it's overdue -- you should remove the heatsink(s) and clean them thoroughly, and replace the thermal pads (or compound) that sit under the heatsinks.
That may be enough to solve the problem - once that's done, re-run the diagnostics and check the memory and the hard drive.  It isn't uncommon for either to start throwing errors (which could have resulted in the OS corruption you're seeing) if they run too hot.

Helping my daughter connect her Dell to our WiFi.
- our router is visible (along with all our neighbours) but connection fails
- the default Windows "Help me solve connection problems" is a dead loss ... a perpetual cycle of going nowhere
- and I know very little about WiFi setup ... count that as "Nil"

My ISP could not connect via LAN cable using TeamViewer. The ISP tech told me the laptop probably has an infection.
Without an AV on the PC I am stopped.
- no AV I just dont believe it

I have installed and run (without internet-connection) ... SuperAntiSpyware and free Mawarebytes ... no problems found.

Not having any experience (nor much faith) in free AV, I came to eightforums.com to get some help
- before I did, I found Latest version of Avast Antivirus but it reads that free Avast is a cloud install with adware "Chrome"

Free Bitdefender download is 158KB ... obviously a cloud install.
- I dont want to expose the Dell to the web without some sort of AV
- I want an AV that will scan for virus infections.

The Dell is extremely slow ... it has only one app installed a Book-keeping program
- my daughter is an Apple fan ... need I say more. Its like pushing a rope uphill.

Would appreciate any help ... have I missed anything ?

Thank you in advance

A:Dell Win8 Pro without any AV, suspect infection

Just discovered free Avast is also an online installer
- would this be a problem while installing Avast.
- the laptop only has her financial affairs on it, nothing else (no internet banking)

My daughter is 44, old enough to make a decision about the AV she would prefer.

The edition of OS and the DPK injected on MB will not match if the original OS media is not used for installation. In this case you have installed OS with a different or Non-OEM edition of OS, hence it is prompting for Product key .

Had to "Factory Refresh" a few day old Dell XPS 8700 (my error) took a long time to get to 95%, then an error window popped up asking for a CMD.EXE disk to be inserted in D: drive, didn't have a disk but tried to click on "retry" but mouse and keyboard were dead...Refresh got to 98% then sat for about an hour then finished, over all it took about 4 hours for a simple refresh. Is it possible that there is a error in this recovery partition from the factory? Have never had something like this happen recovering other system. Have contacted Dell but they are still thinking!!   Any Ideas?

A:Dell win8 recovery/restore partition

From what i read you were able to restore? If everything is ok now it should be fine, but just in case i would manually make some recovery discs for your system so that if you needed to restore ever again, you will always have those to use instead of your recovery partition. The recovery partition can very easily become corrupted, having those created discs will make sure you always have a path back to the factory state

Hi everyone, thanks for any guidance you can give on my BSOD issue.

The system is a Dell Latitude E7440 notebook and I'm using a PR02X docking station connected to two Dell 24" monitors via DVI.

Please see the attached DM Log Collector zip. I've been trying my best to isolate the cause of the different driver errors, but there's not a clear pattern.

Things I've tried:
- Malware scan
- (embedded Win8.1) Windows Defender updates
- Updated RAID, graphics, chipset drivers.

Seems to happen twice daily, usually after coming off of display sleep (not system sleep, that's turned off). The silly Win8.1 bsod screen usually tells me that the driver at fault is "igdkmd64.sys", but further investigating using BlueScreenView shows that it's a mixed bag:

igdkmd64.sys, rdbss.sys, iaStorA.sys, even NETIO.SYS.

Kind-of feels like a hardware issue, but I really don't know. The system is a month old.

A:Upgrade from Win7 Home Premium SP1 to Win8 Pro? [DELL N5110]

Hello Techo, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Yes, you can upgrade or clean install to 64-bit Windows 8 Pro if you like.

I personally like doing a clean install, but either will work. The upgrade will be cheaper than a system builders (full) copy though.
Upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $39.99

Buy Windows - Microsoft Windows
If you upgrade, you keep backup schedule, programs, Windows settings, user accounts and files. I would still recommend to backup anything that you do not want to lose just to be safe though.

Upgrading or a clean install may or may not install drivers for your devices. You can download Windows 8 drivers for your Dell N5110 at the Dell link bellow though.

Drivers and Downloads | Dell [United States]

There's no guarantee that your system will not crash or have any other issues. Just to many variables. If the installation goes well, then you should usually be good to go though.

Hope this helps,

Updated all drives available from Dell site and also from 3rd party site. Everything is working EXCEPT that every time I plug an external device requiring a COM port, it simply does not work. I tried the USB2 and USB3 ports. The Wireless adapter is using COM 3-4-5-6 according to DEVICE MANAGER, and the indication I get when plugging in a USB cable while monitoring the DEVICE MANAGER, is 3 or 4 triangles with "!" in the center. Each of them displays a message under OTHER DEVICES: "AUDIO DEVICE ON USB BUS"; "ENHANCED COM PORT"; "STANDARD COM PORT"... when I open them I get the message "The drivers for this device are not installed (code 28). When I try to update or install a driver, it indicates that there are none available. I tried to connect the external device (a Yaesu FTdx3000 amateur radio transceiver with USB output) to each port with the same results. I do not have any other external device requiring a com port to see if different results would occur. However, I have confirmed that the radio communicates correctly using the USB2 port of my old Toshiba Quasimo using the same operating system. So the fault does not seem to be the cable or the radio, but, something in the Dell. HELP!

I'm having this strange issue that I noticed a few hours back ... for some reason when i change power plan from the taskbar batter icon, the screen brightness doesn't change, no idea why/what could trigger this as I've not updated the nvidia driver for a while now, not sure I think 6month + or so .. and it was all working fine.
Also beadvised I haven't updated windows for a while ether ... so its probably not the fact that a win update caused this as I haven't updated for a while and last I check .. and once again about 6month or maybe 8months back .. it was working fine.
Also if i right click on the batter icon "adjust screen brightness > the vertical scrollbar" .. when i move it left or right ... nothing happens.

Strange thing is .. when I use the laptop on batter or there is power outage .. the screen brightness gets reduced as it should be.

This thing really isn't effecting daily usages however as its an issue, I would like to get it fixed if possible, any ideas?

System specs:
Asus X555LF
Wndows 8.1 64bit
Intel? Core? i3 5010U Processor
NVIDIA? GeForce? 930M with 2GB DDR3 VRAM

Thanks in advance.

A:Win8.1 brightness change not working

Also on another note probably the graphics drivers are working fine or atleast the nvidia one is .. as I can games like blade and soul etc just fine .. no visual issues or anything. Could it be that the intel driver or some other ms driver related to the display adapter got damaged somehow maybe

I need to wipe and reinstall Windows 8.1 because the administrator password has been lost, no password recovery disk is available and as the machine now only logs into the Guest account and you cant run the Dell Recovery and Restore from a Guest account without logging in as an admin
We have no data that needs backing up as the machine is being assigned to a new person in the company and we don't need any installed programs so we purchased the Dell OS recovery and restore USB for the machine in the belief that this would allow us to restore back to day one.
I was informed that the version of Windows that will be restored is 8.0 and then require upgrading again after... not a problem
Unfortunately the recovery process insists on running a data backup so it can be restored later ...
- If I shutdown the PC when logged in as Guest before running the USB OS recovery, when it gets to the Initialise Backup and Migration it goes to the desktop and does nothing
- If I log out of Guest before shutting down it sits in at the USB OS recovery screen with "Initialise Backup and Migration" "Please Wait" and the rotating processing icon
I have waited waited 2 hours after both the above and no apparent progress so had to force shutdown.
All tests up to this point find no errors ... well there aren't any, we just don't have the admin password !

A:Installation hangs at data backup when reinstalling Win8 from Dell Recovery & Restore USB

I advise securely wiping your system:
Download the new Windows 8.1 with update 1 a.ISO:
This will work with your OEM license, see a clean install of Windows for more details:
This will take you through the installation of Windows 8.1, its drivers and making a recovery partition from the clean install using Dell Backup and Recovery.

Hi all,

I used to use olby tiles/modern tile maker to create custom tiles just fine. However yesterday this happened and now any custom tile I create looks like these, regardless of which program is used to make it:

I have tried the "rebuild cache" and "refresh" options offered with olby tile and modern tile maker... but they do not do anything.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem? (the shortcuts still work, just the image is always this; also, normal shortcuts made via windows pin2start look and work fine).

I just got a Dell 15R 5537 (on 29th September 2014) and when the laptop is on or off, the LED indicator on the front of the PC doesn't light up. What is the matter? do i need to get it replaced?

A:Battery indicator LED of DELL 15R 5537 (i5 6GB 500GB WIN8 Touch) not lighting up when charger connected

Hi Jason,
The LED light indicated below only illuminates when AC adapter is connected to the system and is charging the battery.

If the light is not illuminating when the AC adapter is connected to the system then I would suggest you to try flashing the BIOS on the system. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, select the operating system, and then download the BIOS from the BIOS section onto the system and install it.

Please let me know if this helps.

Hello guys,

I have old Satellite U200-165. I installed windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation successfully after i changed the hard drive to SSD, but the sound did not work. Windows showing that the sound work perfectly, but it does not come out.

Any advise please.

A:Satellite U200 - Sound is not working after Win8.1 installation

Satellite U200 is pretty old machine and not supported for Win8 or Win8.1. I think we don't have any report on this forum how this old piece of hardware works with Win8.

If sound card is properly installed, have you checked all sound settings?
I presume the same problem is with headphones, right?

In Win7 (Home Edition), I used to login to admin account and start an application (say Magicjack VOIP for instance). As long as the admin account was signed in Magicjack worked no matter which user logged in. When I upgraded to Win8 Pro, Magicjack only works when my account (admin) is active. When other users log in and my account is signed in but inactive, Magicjack stops working.

Can anyone help me to set Win8 up such that my applications will work as long as I am signed in and other users log in?

A:Apps like MagicJack from one user stop working in another in Win8 Pro

i avoided all this by getting magicjack pro and just plugging it into my router downstairs, the phone id's come up on my satellite phones not my computer, just the way I want it.

Since updating op system to Win 8.1, I am not able to get into the Nvidea control panel. I get a message that no displays are connected. I have got the Nvidea card as my primary source for the monitor.

Help appreciated.

A:Since Win8.1 update NVIDIA control panel is not working

I guess you read the step by step instruction how to update the system from Win 8 to Win 8.1
Did you? Did you follow such instruction?

Did you update and install the essential nVidia driver for Win 8.1 which is available on Toshiba driver website?
If not, do that!

After doing a batch of MS Windows updates on May 16 on an Asus laptop preinstalled with Win 8.1 Pro 64-bit installed, I have not been able to do any printing except to an older HP Deskjet F2120.
Other printers (Samsung CLP365, Lexmark E230, HP Laserjet etc) cannot be printed to.
The same problem occurs with printers regardless of network or local.
I can set up a printer using either software from the printer vendor or let Windows find the printer, and still the same problem.

The laptop is running fine apart from the printers issue and so I don't want to get a new PC, try System Restore, or anything similar.
The printer setup runs smoothly, but once the printer has been set up I go into Devices and Printers and select the printer, the following error messages come up:
Right-mouse click on Printing Preferences: 'Operation could not be completed'
Right-mouse click on Printer Properties: 'The <xyz> printer driver is not installed on this computer. Some printer properties will not be accessible unless you install the printer driver. Do you want to install the driver now?'
However, when I go into 'Printer Server Properties' and the 'Drivers' tab, the <xyz> printer driver is shown to be installed.
For exmaple, this happened yesterday when I visited some friends near work and did a test with a Brother inkjet MFP they had - the first time I had ever connected my laptop to a Brother printer.
Therein lies the conundrum ...
And just to show that it's not driver softwa... Read more

Roll back before you installed those updates. If the printers do not have Windows 8 compatible drivers, you are stuck in a really hard place.

The AMD card won't work,The load is all on the intel graphics card,I tried everything from installing the AMD drivers to disabling the Intel drivers, nothing seems to work and my FPS in the games I play is quite for the specs I have on this laptop..Anyone got a similar problem? or Is it windows related?

A:AMD Radeon R5 M335 not working on Inpiron 5559 (win8.1 64-bit)

You can't run the AMD GPU independently of the Intel GPU - the AMD GPU is just a co-processor.
Does the system recognize and have drivers loaded for BOTH GPUs?  If so, are you using the AMD Control Panel (or context menu) to choose the AMD GPU for the applications you want to run with it?
The AMD GPU depends on the Intel GPU to function - and there are often settings that need to be changed for certain games (and in fact there are still plenty of games, many older ones, that will not run with a hybrid GPU setup).

A:Win8 7989 and VirtualBox network settings not working

Found this looking for a fix and it did the trick!

Used VBox4.1.2, Win8Dev, and some sorting of the bus types (most how tos did not work for me), got it installed and then no network, I tried several things, no go, then finally came across the above network settings and success!!

This may be fix for some of us for the next Win8 beta/RC and later!

So dad bought my mom a new laptop for her birthday. Of course it has(had) Windows 8 on it. She did not like it & we have a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate on hand to reformat the laptop. Well everything has gone well on the install for windows 7. Everything seems to be working except for the wireless card. I will update this post if needed because I don't remember the particular model of the Toshiba laptop but when I talk to my dad I will get it posted asap. I do have a parts number. P/N:PA3839U-1MPC. I have tried to look around for different drivers & what not but no luck so if someone could help that would be awesome. No rush but the quicker the better would be great. Thanks in advance.

Hi there,
Prior to the 8.1 update I was able to run java fine on the desktop IE10.  For work this is essential, as I access dropbox to upload files, etc.  I'd much rather keep using IE, however since 8.1 I get an alert that some of my add-ons are not compatible
with the new enhanced security features, etc.
I turned off "Enhanced Protected Mode", toggled various settings, uninstalled/reinstalled latest java, etc.  Still nothing working.  I'd rather not get a new browser as I love IE... any solutions?
I'm running a 64bit OS & processor, high-end machine.
Many, many thanks!

Hi people,

i have the above problem since i upgraded Vista to windows 8. my soundcard seemsto work ok. My webcam is also working. i made sure i chose the right microphone on the control panel etc. so theoretically there is no reason why it shouldnt work.. but its not working.

im guessing it has to do with my laptop being quite old, hence no compatible drivers ? i have a Satellite L350.

what should i do?
simly buy a headset?

A:Satellite L350 - built in microphone is not working after Win8 upgrade

I can understand that you want to use newest OS on this old piece of hardware but it can be problematic to use it if the certain notebook model is not fully supported.

I think you are the first one who has reported about this issue. Unfortunately I cannot help you with this but if possible ask some friend if you can get headset and test audio out and mic ports.
It will be interesting to know if you will be able to use mic on headset.

Please post some feedback.
