RELEVANCY SCORE 200
Preferred Solution: Computer is slow..hangs for a long time when opening my computer icon

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Computer is slow..hangs for a long time when opening my computer icon

Hello, punkopunx
Welcome to TSF

My name is Billy O'Neal and I will be helping you. (Billy or Bill is fine, if you like.)
Please give me some time to look over your computer's log(s).
Please take note of the following:In the meantime, please refrain from making any changes to your computer.
Also, even if things appear to be running better, there is no guarantee that everything is finished. Please continue to check this forum post in order to ensure we get your system completely clean. We do not want to clean you part-way up, only to have the system re-infect itself. :)
If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
Finally, please reply using the button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.
Old topics are closed after 3 days with no reply, and working topics are closed after 5 days. If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just put a post here so that I know you're still here. We get a lot of people who simply leave, and if there is no contact for that amount of time I will have to assume you have "vanished" .
We need to run a Scan with DDSPlease download DDS, and save it to your desktop, from one of the following mirrors:This is a mirror
This is another mirror

Disable any type of "Script Blockers" or "Script Protection" installed on your system.
Double click on your desktop.
If prompted by any script blocking tools, please allow any actions taken by DDS.
When prompted to preform an Optional Scan, please select
Two reports will open. Please reply with the generated reports:DDS.txt <-- Copy and paste into your next post
Attach.txt <-- Attach to your next post
We need to scan for rootkits with GMERPlease download gmer.zip and save to your desktop.alternate download site 1
alternate download site 2

Unzip/extract the file to its own folder. (Click here for information on how to do this if not sure. Win 2000 users click here.)
When you have done this, disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
Note: There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
Double-click on Gmer.exe to start the program.
Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click NO.
Click on "Settings", then check the first five settings:System Protection and Tracing
Processes
Save created processes to the log
Drivers
Save loaded drivers to the log

You will be prompted to restart your computer. Please do so.

Hey guys. These past couple weeks my computer has been running slower than usual, and has had some frustrating hang times as well. At this point my computer is fairly old, but I want to make sure it's not infected with anything and to see if I can speed this thing up. I've attached to this message my DDS logs zipped and my GMER logs as well. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi ! My name is Maxime, and I'm new to this forum. I made an account here because I need help, and I didn't know who could help me.

So, my computer is getting slow after a long time use (6-12 hours) and it sometimes crash, giving me a black screen, white screen, brown screen... it changes almost every time. When I'm resetting my computer, everything goes well, and my computer goes at is maximum speed (I think ). I think that it could be a virus or something like that. I've read something about decompression bomb last week, could that be possible? 3 weeks ago, I scanned my computer with the trial version of Avast, and he founds like 6 decompression bomb, that I manually deleted.

I'm using windows 7.

What should I do ? Here are the files..

EDIT : I don't think its an overheating issue, I've downloaded a program showing the temperature of hardware, and it's all around 35-40, which is in the average.

EDIT 2 : When my computer crash, I need to shut it down by myself, or it won't do anything else.

About 3 week ago my computer started to run slow when webpages load(I typically leave my computer on 24/7) so I rebooted and it started to run just fine. Then about 24-36 hours later I noticed it running slow again when loading webpages. By running slow I mean, the mouse would freeze up as I would try to move it while the page was loading, once the page loads the mouse moves around freely. I do not notice the mouse freeze while loading large computer programs such as full version of Photoshop or Power Director. It only seams to happen when loading webpages. This holds true no matter if I use Chrome, Firefox or Edge. So it has consistently started running slow after being on for 24 to 48 hours. It seems to get worse the longer it is on, but always runs fine after a reboot. It also seems that the webpages load faster af... Read more

Hey,
I am having a very strange problem with my computer.  My computer sometimes boots up very slowly, and hangs for long periods of time.  Then it works fine, then it is slow, then it works fine...  When it is slow it can take 15 mins or more to boot up.  I tried booting in safe mode, but I just keep restarting before the drivers are loaded.  When I boot normally, everything seems to work but, very slowly.  The programs load and run if you wait long enough.  While I am online, Firefox will report that it is not responding and then it will finally catch up and open the pages.

When it is running normally it seems fine. I have tried scanning for viruses and malware, but I have not been able to find anything.  This is kinda driving me nuts because I know my way around the computer and I can't seem to find what is causing it to come to a stand still.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A:Windows 7 is very slow and hangs for a long time

Well, first you could try disabling startup programs that are unhelpful to you to speed things up. Then you could run CCleaner and/or Advanced System Care by IOBit (i believe) but don't use their registry cleaners. Then try defragmenting your hard drive. And if nothing else works, you should probably fresh install the OS to an SSD.

I have a Hp dx5150 running windows xp Professional Service Pack 3,
amd athlon 64 x2 Dual
Core Processor 4400+
2.19 GHz, 1.93 GB of RAM

and i am at a 100% loss, it used to run perfectly, super fast, never had a virus or any problems, i monitor my computer with avira free anti virus, malwarebytes, and comodo firewall,
it was running fine, and then over night, it started working really slow, the computer sounded louder than usual, and boot up took forever, programs took forever to load, and after they do, it still laggy.
I ran scans with my anti virus and nothing was ever detected,
this happened about 2 months ago, and i've been trying to ignore it but i can't handle it any more and i've looked everywhere with no idea where to even start or what to check. I tried doing a system restore to a date before the problems started, the weird thing is, the computer goes back to being super fast, just like it used to be, BUT my internet doesn't work, so i would go to cancel restore and it goes back to being slow, but working internet.

please help me, idk what to do or where to start, i'm usually pretty computer savy and fix my own problems, but i'm at a lost with this one, thanks

This is my first time on this forum, but I have noticed this site is very popular and looks very interesting. I am fixing my son's computer. when I click on "My computer" the search light keeps searching for minutes about 1-5 on average.

It then will show device. I found a fix months ago which directed me to turn on or off a window service. But I did not write it down and can not find the fix.

I did clean up the drive, run spybot, AVG scanned but problem persists. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

Hello,

I am running windows XP although i do not think that this is relevant because of the times at which my computer freezes.

It has been freezing for a few years (2/3 years.. not constant though) the first time it was freezing i used a electric pump to blow all the dust out of all the machine and it successfully worked so that it didnt freeze anymore.. although now its freezing again (and has been for a few months)..

I will be getting rid of the dust again tomorrow and i am hoping that this works although im not certain that this is the problem as I cleaned out the dust about 5 or 6 months ago...

The only spare parts i have got is a Hard Drive, does anyone think that replacing the hard drive will fix the problem?

---i cant test all this stuff until tomorrow so i am asking here so that i know whyat i need to test tomoz.

-thanks for support

A:Computer freezing (Been doing it for a long time...)

Why would you replace the hard drive, is it defective? Are you getting a blue screen crash, is the computer just locking up?

I have been experiencing an awfully long delay when I open a new window in XP. Whenever I try and open My Computer for example there is a delay of around 5 - 10 seconds before the window actually appears. However once the window is open everything is fine until I close it, then if I try to open it again it takes another 5 -10 seconds to open.
The same thing happens with Internet Explorer, Firefox, Control Panel and indeed every other window. There appears to be no hard drive activity during this pause and the CPU activity remains around 20% until the window actually appears and then it jumps to 30%.
I have run SpyBot, AdAware, AVG and I always have Zonealarm Active and nothing seems to work. I'm at a loss.
I did read on a different forum that someone had a similar problem and used Hijack This to help him solve the problem so hopefully the same will happen here. I've included as much info as I can think of. Please let me know if I have missed anything out.

Hope someone can help.

What are the hardware specs for your dell? McAfee slows down any system a lot, so that is contributing to the problem. Do you have a lot of programs running at startup. Defragment your hard drive.

I have an HP Z800 Workstation with Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.

When I start the computer it seems to be ready in somewhere under a minute after the desktop comes on, meaning there are no spinning circles the mouse moves smoothly etc.
However if I try to launch one of the programs in the taskbar, Firefox, Thunderbird, it takes at least seven to ten minutes for the program to come on and be ready.

At this point if I click Start>All Programs it is completely empty with no icons or folders at all in there and will be for about the same amount of time.
The Start menu freezes open like that and all I can do is to wait.

And wait I do because it makes it much worse if I hold in the power button and turn the computer off because then I can usually not go past that black screen that comes on for a brief second before it goes on the desktop.

I have very few things that are active in msconfig so I have no idea what's going on and why the computer takes so long to start.

Any ideas?

Thanks

A:Computer takes a long time to start

Test your hard drive for errors and do a scan for bad sectors. I feel your drive might be trying to write to faulty sectors which is why you have to wait for so long.

Also use MalwareBytes Antimalware to make sure you don't have adware/spyware running.

When I look in task manager there seems to be too many processes running. I have disabled many of the processes that were being run automatically at start up but this hasn't helped at all. I've also run spybot, adaware, and Malwarebytes' anti-malware which have all turned up nothing. Any help or advice would be appreciated. (Sorry for originally posting in the wrong forum).

"This video is Private" is the message I get when I try to view it.
Judging by symptoms it could be
Power supply
Capacitors on MB going dry or faulty
Hard disk bad sectors or file system
MB, 3v CMOS battery gone empty
If you fix problem with video, something else might be gleamed from it.

Hello, I have a problem with my system. When I wake up in the morning and the computer has been off all night long I will get a bluescrean after like 5min or so... After that the OS reboot and same thing again untill I shut down the system and wait 1-5min then start it. The it will work just fine untill I shut it down again and have if turned off for a long time. Next morning I got the same issue....

? Windows 7
? x64
? No, it's a home-build system
? I got the OS from my MSDNAA...
? From 3 years to 3 months (the oldest thing is HDD the rest is new.)
? Last time I installed the os was like 3 weeks ago (it has been reinstalled alot)
? 930 i7 @ 2.8Ghz
? Gainward 460 1GB GLH
? Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R
? Corsair HX 750W PSU

The errors I get when I see the bluescrean is:

Don't know if it's diffrent all the time or if it's the same. Have only looked for it once...

Sorry for my bad english, hope it won't be a issue for any readers.

Edit: Might add that I have runned memtest on my memories and also send em back where I got them from but they diden't find anything.
Has also tried with 4 diffrent motherboards (same model) and 2 diffrent graphiccards (Not the same model).

Hello, I'm currently writing from an Ubuntu computer, but my Windows 7 computer must have some serious issue...

It is taking extreme lengths of time to boot up and even longer times to load its programs.

The program taking the longest is Skype, and after it loads in, it seems like the computer runs just fine... Maybe a problem with Skype?

I really need help with this problem as this computer is currently my work computer and I need it very badly.

A:Excessively long booting time for my computer. Why?

Try to load defaults in BIOS (either first screen or exit menu).

Start in Safe Mode and see if it will be slow as well.

Hi, im a computer tech for a company, and one of my customers is calling saying that when he comes in in the morning and moves his mouse it takes 5-10 min before the computer wakes up. We are trying to figure out what the problem is but cannot figure it out. We've checked the power settings and whatnot but that doesnt seem to make any difference. Does anyone know what could be causing it to do this. Also the monitor is relatively new so i dont think thats the issue either. Thanks a lot

A:Computer taking a long time to wake up

You're not giving us any computer specs. That would help.
Also, verify exactly what low power setting the system is in. 'Sleep' can mean different things.
What kind of connection is there for the internet?
Have you check the Event Viewer of related Errors such a DCOM, TCP/IP?

It takes me about 30 minutes for me to get everything working again . here are the images I provided . It's really getting annoying . I do what screen tells me to do. After like repeating the steps over and over again . it works fine .

A:Computer takes a long time to turn on...

Good Job on the Hi Res photos. Does this happen after the computer posts? Do you hear any beep codes?
Take a look in your BIOS to see if you can turn off any extended tests also.
IF none of this helps, try unplugging various devices one by one and boot to possibly narrow down the issue.
PS that computer shipped with Vista or XP did the issue start after upgrading the OS?

I have two issues that need to be addressed and I think that they are connected in some way. The first problem is that my computer has begun freezing for long periods of time when I load things. It most recently happened when I tried to load a new page on DeviantArt, but it has happened when doing things as simple as opening a new tab in google chrome or trying to alt+tab to skype. The freeze either lasts a few minutes or much longer. When it lasts longer then 5 or so minutes I decide to force shutdown my computer.
The second issue that I am encountering is that task managers claims I am using 100% of my disk space sometimes when I have very few things open. Usually the culprit is System or Antimalware Executable, two services I can't turn off without shutting down my computer or making it unstable, but sometimes it says I am using 100% of my disk space when the app/service using the most disk space is using a measly 0.1 gb/s or lower. I have tried multiple solutions to this problem, including turning off Windows 8 autoupdates and allocating more memory to certain things, and disabling Super fetch and Windows search.

These are the specs on my Asus laptop:
Something I haven't mentioned is that I dual-boot Ubuntu, but I haven't used it in some time. After upgrading to Windows 8.1 the BIOS reverted back to its default so I just kind of forgot about it, but I never reallocated the space that I had initially allocated to Ubunutu.

The freezing issue started a while back, and... Read more

Hello everybody,

The patient is a Dell Inspiron 9300 Laptop with 512MB Ram, 60GB HD 40% free, Windows Media Center Edition, SP3. When I open "my Computer" it takes almost two minutes to show drives and icons. I have run Combofix and an AVG full scan. It was slightly infected and now clean. Still does it. I've removed all non-essential software, turned off almost all autoruns, done a defrag and a drive C:\ "cleaning" I ran it through CCleaner and Advanced Windows Care. for the most part it's pretty well behaved and operational. Virtual memory is set to 1024/2048. What is that little flashlight working on so hard when I open My Computer?

Thanks,

A:"My Computer" Taking a very long time to open

Open up Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) and click on the Processes tab
Click on the View menu item, then on Select columns.
Place a check mark next to I/O Reads and click OK to accept the changes.

Then stretch out the Task Manager window so you can see all the columns.
Double click on the column header (to sort by that column) and then open My Computer and see what processes spike the highest.
You can do this for the I/O Reads column, the Memory column, and the CPU column.

Also, do you have any mapped network drives that no longer exist? That is another reason for a long delay - the system is searching for network resources that no longer exist.

I did some time on google looking for an answer to this problem, with no definite luck my figure it that some piece of software is pausing the shutdown.

I start my computer all is fine and good. I then try to shut my computer down.
Vista shuts down in about 20 seconds. This is how my computer normally works.

But if i get on the internet and am on for more than 15 minutes or so, the pages take a long time to load. When i try to restart Firefox, an error box comes up telling me that Firefox is already running.

I check task manager and it is, when i try to end the process nothing happens. In order to fix this problem i have to restart my computer. When i attempt to shutdown the computer the desktop just sits there for almost 5 minutes before windows decides to log off and shut down.

I have run avg 8, Norton, and Spybot S&D. In hopes of finding a bug somewhere but nothing has set off the security flags.

This has been happening for almost a month, two weeks ago i did a format and reinstalled all of the programs i had, thinking that it might be a virus of some kind. This still did not help.

I have also reinstalled Firefox multiple times and it has not helped.

Attached is a screen capture of my desktop. I have put icons of all the programs i use on there.

I run visa home premium, core 2 duo 2.0 ghz, 3 gigs ram, geforce 7600.

A:Computer takes a long time to shut down.

The Problem turned out to be caused by Norton's Firefox toolbar, Maybe a memory leak or something. Norton told me they are aware of the problem and are trying very hard to find and implement a solution.

Until that time, I have uninstalled Norton 360 2.0 and am now using Zone Alarm Security Suite. Haven't decided whether I will go back to Norton; lately it has been nothing but disappointments from them.

Ok, this just happened recently and I don't know what is causing it. I'll try to give u a brief overview of the situtation I'm in. XP used to be on my D driver (74gigs), it got screwed up (BSOD) at the time, I didn't know as much computers, so I installed XP to my C driver (4 gigs). This has worked pretty fine up until when SP2 was released. I can't install SP2 because XP takes up about 4 gigs by itself. Without SP2 I just have been running some extra firewalls so compensate.

Well about 4 days ago, I noticed whenever I open up my computer it takes like 7 or 8 seconds before the hard drivers appear. Then I went into network connections to look at my internet icon (to check the settings). I opened it up and nothing was there. The only thing there was on the far left it was asking me if I wanted to setup a network ( my internet is working on all the computers). I have ran 2 different spyware scans and found nothing, ran mcaffee scans and nothing. I can't restore my computer because all the restores got deleted when I was trying to free space on my drives.

Where do I go, usually I can solve tech problems but I mean this is beyond weird? What do I do first, if you need more information just ask because I really need some advice.

I am using an Acer Aspire, three years old, with WIN XP.

Lately a lot has gone wrong, and the Acer takes a long time to download and to get firing. It was bad earlier and I now open up on a BLANK PAGE.

I went to tools/advanced and RESET.

I've downloaded "Toolbar.cop", and her is my results in Wordpad. Any comments?

Also, I was wondering if it would safe to uninstall IE8 completely and reinstall. But, I am under the assumption that if I do so it will revert back to IE7, also someone had said that IE8 won't uninstall.

I have REVO uninstaller on my computer, would that uninstall it?

Hi folks,

I need help. We have a peer to peer network here in our company, for some reason, my boss computer have issue when he open My Network Place and it take like 30 sec or more to be able to display other computers or shared document on the network. My computer or other don't have that issue. We have about 18 PC on the network. Anyone have a clue why it take long time to be able to see other computer/share on the network place? I check all the setting, firewall, antiviruses, etc. but couldn't find the problem. I guess it laying somewhere in the operating system.

Thank in advance,

Hi

If you are comfortable working in the registry you can try looking at this page.

But first make sure you create a restore point and export the registry keys before changing them just in case you have to change them back.

Is it just the browsing that takes long? or does working on the network also take longer than the other workstations?

Hope this works.

Yesterday I had a the unfamous 0X745f2780 error and I was able to fix that. Then I scanned my computer with Spybot, Ad-Aware, McAffee and vaccinated with SpywareBlaster. I also intsalled Mozilla Firefox the day before though it didnt seem to cause any problem. Then I decided to defragment and do a chkdsk and fix the errors. The first chskdsk corrected a lot of errors on the C drive then it rebooted and started again so I decided to skip it. Then my computer froze so I resetted it and then let the chkdsk run again 2 times then it rebooted. Since then my computer takes absolutely forever to load but once it's loaded, it seems to work fine except that oddly enough, the windows XP themes have disappeared so I'm stuck with the classic ones and msn seems to be a bit wonky but it make or not be related. The system recovery wasn't activated so I guess I can't use that. The only thing I have is a SpywareBlaster snapshot which I suppose is totally useless in that case.

Any ideas what I could do to fix that?

A:Computer takes a long time to load after chkdsk

Okay, one possible theory is that chkdsk found some bad sectors and you lost some System data. The missing Themes might be corrected by Start>Administrative Tools>Component Services>Services>Themes>Properties and making sure that it is set for "Auto" and the service is Started.

Please report the result of this.

Chkdsk does not "create" problems however it does sometimes cause them to be made "more aggravated". Simply put, you might have to do a Repair Install to fix the problem, unfortunately. Maybe running "sfc /scannow" might do the trick, but lately I'm kind of weak on this option/method and would rather do the more-reliable (but it takes longer) option of the Repair Install.

You should keep running chkdsk, as sometimes HD's that have serious errors continue to degenerate into complete loss of functionality, and by monitoring the HD you can possibly get ahead of the situation and start backing up data inorder to prepare for the permanent loss of the HD. Also, it is a waste of time to attempt to fix a O/S Installation on a HD that is getting ready to die permanently.

Good Luck

basically when I startup or reboot the computer it takes around 5-10 minutes just to get to the windows loading screen. It seems like everything shows up really slow starting with the emchines splash screen, loading Realtek boot agent, boot from ACPI CDRom, followed by a bunch of white loading progress bars, which just hangs there for ages. once it gets to the windows loading screen it resumes normal speed and everything seems fine from there.

I'm on Windows 7 and was messing around with the fan settings in the BIOS. I don't think that's it since I changed to back default settings to make sure.

Any idea on what's going on?

Edit: I updated to Windows 10 and it seems to have fixed the problem.

1.Check start-up programs, they can increase the boot-up time. You might have to disable some of them...

2.Check your HDD, it defines the boot-up time.If the hard drive has any problem then that's it.
Damaged HDD often gets system load much slower.

3.Scan your PC for malwares. Infected system can be the answer to your question

Let me know if this helps

Hello there, I am new to these boards.

I need some help with making my computer run more quickly. There are 2 problems I have noticed.

I have a new Thinkpad T61 which I bought only a month ago, I use XP SP3 it takes almost 4 minutes in total from hitting the power button to being able to use the internet. A screen before a login screen says "Windows is Starting up..." and that stays there normally for at least a minute, that is the brunt of the problem.

Also I noticed when I am using FireFox alot, it freezes up and it says Page Not Responding on top but then after about 10 seconds usually its fine. Any ideas on either of these?

Here are the programs installed on my computer:

AIM
Mozilla
MS Office 2007
Adobe Reader
eBay Turbo Lister
iTunes
Quicktime Player
WMP

and then other things that came with the comp that look important (Access Connections, PC Doctor, etc) I deleted the excess advertised programs that come with computers (not on my comp but example free AOL and such).

Thanks for your help!

Tom

A:Computer takes incredibly long time to start, any help?

gonna need more info. what are your comp specs? ram? cpu speed?

without that info, i can say: run ccleaner, defrag your hdd (with something like perfect disk 7), and eliminate unnecessary start up programs (start-up inspector).

Hey All-

I just reinstalled Windows on my laptop. It has a miniPCI wireless card and Intel 10/100
Ethernet card.

When it starts up it takes quite a while to connect to either my wireless network or wired network; probably somewhere around two - three minutes after I log on it finally connects.

The workstation/server/wzc, etc. services are started already even when the laptop's not connected yet. The icons don't show up for a while in the tray, but the second they do, it connects fine.

What could be causing this? It's driving me nuts!

Thanks,

Joe

My guess (but only a guess) is that something else is hogging the machine and networking is getting little or no resources. Have you tried SAFE MODE with NETWORKING?

Hi,

I have windows XP SP2 on my pc. It is a 2.8E Pentium 4 with 2gb of memory. SATA drive and 2 IDE DVD-ROM/RW. My problem is, when i click on My Computer the window comes up, but in the middle is a little flash light that goes back and forth for about 1 to 2 mins before it finds the drives that i have. What could be causing this. I have defraged all the drives, turned indexing off, then back on, neither had any effect, i have removed all network drives and printers. Can you please help, it is very annoying and time consuming.

Thanks

P.S. If i type in the address bar c:\, it will go to that drive without the flashlight thing. And then if i go back the flashlight is still there.
Also, even if i let the flashlight thing finish and then got to c:\ and then click bacl to my computer, it will come up with that flashlight again.

Welcome to TSG! I hope I can assist you with this problem.

What operating system is this? XP Home or Pro?

Run the following troubleshooting tests:

Test A

Click on Start
Click on Control Panel
Click on System
Click on Hardware
Click on Device Manager

Question: Is the Device Manager window populated or empty?
Test B

Right-click on any file or folder on your desktop
Hover over "Send To"

Question: Does your computer seem to "freeze" for about 30 seconds and then the Send To list appears?
Test C

Click on Start
Click on Control Panel
Click on Network Connections

Question: Is the Network Connections area empty or populated?
Test D

Click on Start
Click on Control Panel
Click on Add/Remove Programs

Question: Do you see any suspicious entries, specifically ContextPlus?
Test E

Question: Do you still have full USB port functionality with printers, cameras, gamepads, etc.? If you plug in/ unplug a device like a USB memory key if you have one, do you get a "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in your system tray?

Please run these tests and let me know the results...
