Registry Mechanic repeat Temp Files / Shortcuts and Deep Scan files

Q: Registry Mechanic repeat Temp Files / Shortcuts and Deep Scan files

I'm seeing the same four files repeat in the Temp Files / Shortcuts section of a Registry Mechanic scan.

\C:\ProgramData\McAfee\VirusScan\Data\TFRBBC1.tmp
\C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Application\Windows\MCC.chk
\C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\DRM\Cache\Indiv01.tmp
\C:\Users\Kevin\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\edb.chk

I'm also seeing the following two files in the Deep Scan section.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Reporting\EventCache\7971f918-a847-4430-9279-4a52d1efe18d

Recent history: Less than a week ago, during a routine McAfee antivirus scan I discovered a half dozen files associated with the Artemis trojan. Several months earlier I found and debugged (also with McAfee) a different trojan. And the laptop has been slow for several weeks/months.

In anticipation of getting help here I tried running RootRepeal. That ran for more than 24 hours. So I stopped it. Then I tried running SysProt AntiRootkit. But McAfee wouldn't accept it and returned the following message.

McAfee has automatically blocked and removed a Trojan.
About this Trojan
Detected: Artemis!9CE216C69E21 (Trojan), Artemis!9CE216C69E21 (Trojan)

In general the laptop runs slow. And I suspect it's infected. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. What should I do first?

Kevin

Preferred Solution: Registry Mechanic repeat Temp Files / Shortcuts and Deep Scan files

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I went to use PerfectDisc yesterday, it suggested I do a bootup scan, I did, allowed it to do pagefile scan too. Ran fine. Then rebooted, went to do regular scan. it locked up on the Blue Screen of Death.

"Bad_Pool_Header" and gave some error info... 0x00000019, and so on.

Computer runs fine though otherwise, which is funny.

Then when I try to go to Registry Mechanic and scan, it goes all the way through, and on I believe the deepscan, it always goes to BSOD there. I think while it's in the HKEY section of current user.

There may be other programs that will cause the BSOD, but these 2 are the only ones so far. Please guide me through this....Anyone.

Thanx in advance.

A:Please Help Me. BSOD during PerfectDisc Scan or Registry Mechanic Scan

Ok, I ran Diskeeper and it let me defrag. Then I reinstalled PerfectDisk, and it did a full defrag without going to the Blue Screen of Death.

Registry Mechanic still does the Blue Screen of Death though.

I use an SSD for the Windows system files on my machine, and it works wonderfully; as is the case, I notice it most when going to use a HDD based system. In the same vein, I'm taking advantage of a fast (250Mb/55Mb) USB3 drive for some things. The Windows and User TEMP/TMP files are on the USB stick (that makes a big difference, especially for things like WinRAR), and the browser cache files.

I've also put the swap file on it. That seems to work fine - there's no reason it shouldn't - and am thinking of the next step, moving the registry on to USB drive. My thinking for these last two is this: both the swap file and registry files are huge files that are written to very frequently. If an SSD has a minimum writable storage unit, it'll end up doing a lot more writing/freeing than the odd update here and there.

This is then a tradeoff; I'm using relatively cheap USB storage for things that are written often - temp files - and also for critical files - swap and registry. If I start getting errors on the USB stick it's no great bother to replace it, whereas replacing the SSD would be a lot of work.

I don't know how to move the registry though, that is my question in this post. And it isn't easily dispensed with either, so I'd need frequent backups, I realise. Losing the swap file is unimportant, same for temp and cache files.

I'm also wondering if anyone has comments on this? Is it a good idea, or as useful as Win98 memory optimisers? I've never seen these ideas discussed any... Read more

A:USB3 drive for swap, registry and temp files ?

Do you want to rely on the Universal Serial Bus to handle critical parts of your system?
To date I am having random issues with USB equipment like game controllers, thumb drives, card readers and even external HDDs.

Are you sure about this? This is risky.

If you're worried about writing to your SSD too much, don't be. They last longer than your conventional mechanical drive in my experience... I still have my first SSD in my main system.
There is a sensible level of precaution to take that you can find exemplified across any SSD information or tutorial source.

I recommend leaving the Windows registry alone.
Losing the swap file is actually a little bit more important than you think.
If you're worried about free space, there are other things you can do, like disabling Hibernation for example.
Optimizing your system (and/or your SSD) for real-word performance is probably not worth the risk, and can be done by more conventional means, but that's up for you to decide.

I ran a registry scan with C cleaner and it showed the following two errors:

1) Invalid or empty file class .shtml\OpenWithProgids\shtmlfile. This is located in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.shtml\OpenWithProgids

2) Unused registry key .sys\OpenWithList. Path same as above as far as and including File Exts.

Do I have errors here that need to be put right?

A:C cleaner finds invalid or empty files in registry scan

While those are completely benign items and no harm will come from deleting them, DO NOT USE REGISTRY CLEANERS. Just ignore what ccleaner found and don't bother to scan again. So called registry cleaners cause problems, they do not cure or fix anything.

Just wondering if you can help me out and give me some advice.
i realise this might not be the right section to post this thread - Need advice on Rego Mechanic 5 (Registry Mechanic) and System Mechanic 7 Pro. Are they good? and should tehy be used? i was told by a friend that most registry mecahnics fix registry but also delete/mess up good files. I used to use it but i formated and started over - when i used to use it it all the problems that it fixed its solution was deleting them - this worried me. Can i survive with just disk cleanup and defragmenter? or do i need a registry fixer and system mechanic? i have got an anti virus PC -Cillin 2007.

Hello.
I hope that someone can help me with my problem. I a lower-intermediate on a computer.

I have my tower pc on constant all day- to record a streaming IP Camera from my work.
Initially, I saved these files into my docutments- which they would save as .avi files, and after every several days I would delete them as they would take up ALOT of space on my pc.

My pc is 250GB in size, and usually it would be about 80GB full before I had the IP Camera.

Just recently, I noticed all of the IP Camera avi files seemed to have disappeared from my documents if I went directly to the folder... BUT I could still see them in documents when I was choosing a location to save the recordings.
Upon right-clicking the avi files in the latter, the files would be of no size and wouldn't play.

Now my computer is 210GB full in the matter of a week.

After a while of fiddling about trying to find if the files were 'hidden' or somewhere else, and my techy friend had a look as well, we have found that it is the 'Temporary Internet Files' folder that is 118GB in size, but when I open the folder, there is Nothing in there.

Please help!!!

A:Temp Internet files folder is 118GB full, but no files???

Cleaning up temp. files is no problem. Use this for starters.
Disk Cleanup : Extended
Ccleaner is another little program that can do that. I recommend not using the registry part of Ccleaner. TFC bYy Old Timer is another good little program that works for such things. After your temps are clean reboot.
What would bother me the most is how did these files get put some where I didn't put them. I would run from the cmd. prompt/admin sfc /scannow. If System File Checker finds problems run it 3 times booting after each time.
What security do you have on your computer and have you run scans?
Please fill in your System Specs.

Hello,

I have a system with 32gb DDR3-2400, a 256GB SSD and a couple of spinners. I have set up 4gb of the RAM to be used as another RAMdisk using the softperfect software. This problem has been going on for some time, but has been more of a problem since I started using the RAMdisk. Not because the RAMdisk itself isn't working well, because the stuff that is stored there keeps getting reset.

I have pretty much identified that when updates are installed through windows update (either from Microsoft update or from my WSUS server), the following are reset to defaults

1. Pagefile is automatically managed and stored on the C: drive and is set to 32gb
2. The TEMP and TMP environment variables are reset to the C:\users default location
3. The temporary Internet Files location is reset to the default C:\users... location

There may be others that I have not discovered.

I have manually set my swap file to 1024/2048 on the D:\ drive (a spinner), on the belief that it should rarely if ever be needed with a system equipped with 32GB of RAM. I'm certainly not inclined to waste 32GB of space on my SSD for an unused object.

I have placed the TMP/TEMP files, cookies and Temporary Internet files on the RAMdisk to squeeze a little extra performance out of the system. (Yes, I know, I'm not really getting much benefit).

Photoshop and a few other programs also use the RAMdisk as a scratch disk, and were the main reason I set it up in the first place.

This is becoming a real pain w... Read more

Hi,

I have recently started sharing files from my desktop which is running Windows Vista and Office 2007. However, the files that I am having issues with saving were initially created on the laptop where the issues are occuring. I can open the shared Excel files with no problem and make changes. When I save the files however, I get this message, "Your changes could not be saved to 'file name.xls but were saved to a temporary document named 'D6C73000'. Close the existing document, then open the temporary document and save it under a new name." I can open, edit and save changes made to Word documents in the same shared folder structure. Can anyone please explain why this is happening and what I can do to stop it?

Recently I upgraded from IE 5 to IE 6. Then I noticed that as Norton scanned, it spent over 30 minutes just looking at files in "Content IE 5 temp". There were upwards of 30,000 files there, said Norton as it counted them while scanning. Anyway, I went to delete them. There are about 12 folders in there, and they all have gibberish names like ghl8fdpr5. They DO seem to be internet files, although there is an application in at least one of the folders. (NO idea what it is, it's just another gibberish string of letters and I didn't open it.) I marked them for deletion, and for every folder got a warning box saying it contained System files...programs...was I sure? No, not sure! So I left without doing anything. But I do want them gone. Why are System files in there and what could they be? Why would programs be in there? Are these NOT temporary internet files?

Hi I was wondering if anyone knows what an ABI file is??
I have tried to find out by typing it into google and the nearest I can figure is that it my be some sort of tracking file?? the reason I ask is because I had a problem with System Mechanic .. there is a section in System Mechanic to get rid of junk and obsolete files ..
normaly it just collects 0 length files Temp files etc. but whenever an ABI file comes up it (System Mechanic) starts to put the whole hard drive in to be deleted!! Now whenever this happens I just delete the abi file and restart the scan and only the junk and temp files come up, which is what it is supposed to do. if anyone knows what this abi file is I would appreciate an answer
Thanks in advance!!

Almost every time I do quick scan and got nothing and I think it is good. However, I just read online, it says that when quick scan does not find anything then you do deep scan. It confuses me, since it means I should do deep scan all the time. ?

A:quick scan vs deep scan/full scan ( antivirus )

the 1000$ question is
which anti-virus
ON windows defender and malwarebytes and many others only a quick scan is necessary
The converse of what you have read is usually the case eg. You do a quick scan and only if that finds something should you then need to follow it with a full scan
For instance a threat scan on Malwarebytes paid for edition or the scan on the free version will scan up to 99% of the system
A full scan also scans the system restore points and other unusual places to detect, or at least try to detect, all possible traces of infection.
As I said it depends on the AV and to some extent the OS which I presume is not Windows 2000 as indeed commented on by my colleague Cookiegal in another of your topics
Also, it appears you're running Windows 7 and if you don't still have your Windows 2000 computer you should visit your profile and change that information so that it's current which makes it easier to help you in some casesClick to expand...

How can I safely scan these files before putting them on a clean computer?

Thanks for any help.

Install Panda USB Vaccine, or BitDefender?s USB Immunizer on your computer to protect it from any infected USB device. Then you're safe to connect any external device and scan it with your AV program.

What do I need to do to have the .reg files change the registry to Unblock my Word97 files ?

Hello SausalitoWalt, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Double check in Default Programs to make sure that the reg file extension is set to have it's Current Default program set as Registry Editor (C:\Windows\regedit.exe). Afterwards, try merging the REG file again to see if it will now.

Hope this helps,

I created a folder on my D:\ [Disk] drive called D:\Windows Temp Files - then went to Advanced system Variables and edited the locations of both my TMP and Temp... Rebooted right away and now it's been over a month but nothing is vissable in the new folder?? [all Hidden and System files are enabled in view] My computer, updates, etc., etc., are running fine..

I checked the new Variable settings I edited and they are both still there: D:\Windows Temp Files
If I remember correctly I think the default use to be: %user profile%\appdata\local\temp < but I'm not possitive!

I've had this computer (HP Pavilion dv2000)for about 4 years and despite my best efforts it's started to get a little bogged down.. SO a while ago I used some free registry cleaning software (Eusing Registry Cleaner, Window Registry Repair & Registry Repair Wizard 2011) to try to get rid of clutter on my lap top in hopes that it would run a little better. I know, I know, let me save everyone the time of telling how stupid it was to do this when I don't know that much about computers! SO as you can imagine after my little cleaning spree I started having some weird problems but mostly related to Internet Explorer. I tried to undo whatever I did but nothing worked. I actually had to stop using IE all together because I kept getting errors and couldn't get to some websites at all. It seemed to be a security setting issue but no matter what changes I made nothing would fix it. So I switched to Firefox which has been a lot better but not perfect. So now its pretty obvious that my computer is missing some files? .... drivers? ....something because I am basically unable to execute most setup files that I download and my Norton anti-virus seems to not be able to run its periodic scans correctly. Lately the computer seems to be worse, buggy, slow, freezes up and I suspect that there is a virus somewhere but no virus scan, adware scan, etc. that I've been able to run (Spy Bot, Bit Defender) finds anything and I'm to afraid to even look at the registry now... please bare with me and my lack of knowledge about computers and there operating system.

hi, i have an 8 year old desktop with windows xp. here is my question.....

when i right click the start tab, then select explore, it puts me into all of the folders in my system.

at the top of the list, right under the desktop folder there is a "my documents" folder. in this folder there are sub folders containing my pictures, music, videos, downloads and such.

now farther down the list there is a documents and settings folder, in it there is a ron folder. in that folder there is a "my documents" folder. this folder contains the same pictures, music, videos, downloads folders with the exact same information as the first one.

now we can go farther down the list to a "rons documents" folder, it also has the same information as the other two do.

so i have three folders with the exact same information taking up valuable space on my drive.

i am trying to clean up my drive and open up some free space on it. so can i delete two of these folders with the same information in them with out causing any problems ?? if i can, which ones would be the best to remove ??

i am aware of and use regularly the disk cleaner, the defraggler, and i delete my browsing history and cookies too.

i have also just added an external drive to store things on and to back my system up onto.

any help to clean up my main drive, to help it to run a bit faster would be great !!

thanks

Have you just recently installed some delayed Windows Updates? You should have been getting those warnings for quite some time now. Content IE files are a "dumping" ground for all sorts of temp files from the internet and they are kind of isolated somewhat from the rest of the system. Opening those folders directly exposes you to potentially aquiring any malicious web content that would otherwise be safely removed through the normal deletion method.

I have two files Avast can not scan.

C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\SafeOS\SafeOS.Mount\Windows\servicing\Sessions\11312_596062500.back.xml

error: the file cannot be accessed by the system (1920)

They look like they might be something to do with Windows 10?

I might have  typo in the warnings - i had to type these in as i cant see how you grab a report from avast.

Any ideas?

How do you download multiple files from a website that has them several links deep? I have tried using Free Download Manager I have also tried using this other one I found on Google called Fresh Download What I usually end up with is a few weird HTML files. but no other files that work. For example I will get mp3s that won't play.

Just to clarify, I am not talking about downloading multiple links from one page. I want to download files that are on multiple links but all originating from one website. Is there an faster way than to download them all individually?

For the last three days I am getting this message "Cannot copy 'filename': Path too deep" whan I copy any file to my USB pen drive from the PC.

I am running XP2 SP2 - 160 GB Seagate HDD, 1 GB RAM and the usual CD/DVD.

I have already tried the following:

1) Reformatted the USB drive (Transcend 2GB) as FAT32

2) I have switched using the USB ports on the PC

3) I have changed the USB Cable

4) I have copied files to the USB stick without problem from the office computer running WIN 2K.

5) I have reduced the Path variable to about 32 characters on my PC

6) There are no files in the root of the USB stick. Only three folders with no "long file names", thought the files inside do have long file names.

7) I can copy files from USB stick to the hard drive without problem.

8) I am using Comodo Pro firewall, Avast AV and use the anti rootkit and CCleaner etc. regularly - no probems at all.

9) i have yet not thrown away the USB stick as it seems to be ok.

10) Even a software like SyncBack continues to run (hang) without any action.

Any help would be welcome to solve this problem.

Thank You
Mytor

Ok apparently I had the Huer virus, couldn't get rid of it kept replicated. So I just reformatted the laptop again since I just put a new HD in it and didn't have much on there anyway. Well everything comes out clean ran Malwarebytes, AVG, and spybot. I also ran Kerpsky (bad speller sorry) online scan nothing came up. I'm still thinking something is up. When i run AVG in safe mode it can't scan some folders. Its say folders lock. Some of these are network files so I'm thinking maybe thats why my internet is freaking slow (1mb/sec) it used to be 2.5mb/sec. We did just switch from dsl to cable and we are having some problems with the cable. I'm hoping its just the service provider and not my computers. My other concern is my external HD. I do believe its infected. I'm scared to plug it into the laptop and infect it again. I do believe the HD is infected with the recycler virus or what ever it is. Is there a way to disinfect my external HD so that it could be useful again? Its 1tb and has all sorts of pics of the family along with vids and music. I do plan on buying another external to just store family pics on and a seperate for my media files movies and music. I'm sure there is more I just don't remeber. I'm getting tired of searching through pages and pages of stuff. My desktop is in worse shape but I'm just going to buy another HD since the one thats in it is old and slow anyway. I'm not sure about the etiquette for this. I posted a request for help two weeks ago but have received no replies. I don't wish to violate any terms of this forum but I really do need help for this and I hope someone who knows what is going on will respond to this.

I have different machines running different versions of Win 7. On two of them, the extended Windows shortcuts like Win X and Win arrow keys work as they are supposed to. On two other machines, the shortcuts do not work but other ones, such as Win T and Win +, do. I have spent weeks looking for answers to this but I cannot find any information at all and I cannot find any references to anyone else who has had a similar issue. I don't know what is causing this but I really need to get these shortcuts working on one computer that is used for streaming. If anyone has any ideas about this I would really appreciate hearing them.

Have Windows XP Home Ed (Serv Pack 2)

Have a number of "Temp" directories on the C root directory (Directory names such as: "Adobe Acrobat.temp" - "Console.temp" - "Display.temp" - "DLA Writing.temp" - "McAfee.temp" - "Intel chipset.temp").

Near as I can tell these directories were created when I installed these programs, but not completely sure.

I have learned the hard way that, "Not all temp directories can or should be deleted."

Have no problem keeping these directories in the C root directory IF THEY ARE NEEDED. Otherwise want to keep HD clean, lean, mean.

TWO QUESTIONS: 1. Are these directories needed after install?

2. If NOT needed, why don't these install programs clean the garbage off the HD after install, when no longer needed? Not cleaning-up after install seems like "Malicious Indifference" to the user's best interests, after that user paid for and installed that software mfg's program. It's malicious laziness and indifference.

Hello from my understanding of tempory files you do not need these after the program has been installed. I delete these on a regular basis my-self so you should be able to. Click start, run and type %temp% and press enter, this will take you to the tempory folder.

Hope this helps

I have been having an issue with Symantec Leaving my logs full with scan Omissions 99% of which are compressed. After doing considerable research I find symantec gives a nice list of possabilities and things to look into. Personally none of these fixed my issue, but it may yours. If Anyone has any Ideas to add to Symantec's offical list of reasons for scan omissions please do.---------------------------------------------The following is From Symantec @ http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-s...002073015235648Event ID 6Solution:This event is typically encountered when any of the following occurs: You scan a compressed file that contains a password-protected file. The decomposer engine cannot provide the password required to gain access to the file, so it will be omitted during a scan. You scan files that have been locked for access by the operating system and access cannot be released to the scanner because the file is in use. You scan files that are recursively compressed to a depth that is more than the scan engine is set to scan. By default, the scan engine is set to scan a maximum depth of three levels (for example, a zip file contained within a zip file contained within another zip file). You scan files with LH7 compression, which is not a supported format. These compressed files commonly have an .lzh extension, and they are omitted by the scan. You scan files that are in use by another user. This is most commonly seen when you scan user directories and shared folders... Read more

A:My USB files all became shortcuts

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will assist you with your malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding. Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one. If you have any problems while following my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem. Do not run any other scans without instruction or add/remove software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me. Post all logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts. If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed. Stay with me. I will give you some advice about prevention after the cleanup process. Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean. My first language is not english. So please do not use slang or idioms. It could be hard for me to read. Thanks for your understanding.   Scan with FRST in normal modePlease download Farbar's Recovery Scan Tool to your desktop: FRST 32bit or FRST 64bit (If not sure: Start --> Computer (right click) --> properties)Run FRST. A:Help Me Please?(XP) shortcuts and .exe files do not work.

Hi, and welcome to TSF's HijackThis Log Help forum.

Before proceeding, please print this page or copy it to Notepad to help you carry out the instructions. If you have questions about any instruction, please ask before performing it.

If you can't download one of the below programs by simply clicking its link, please try right-clicking that link instead. Then click Save Link As. or Save Target As.. and save the file to your computer.

Now, the fix..

Go to My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

To get rid of any lingering installation files, you should empty your Temp folders. (You should do this periodically anyway, as even benign software tends to leave a lot of junk there.) Download and install CleanUp! (alternate link), then run it and click the CleanUp! button. When it asks whether you want to log off, click Yes.

Reboot your system into Safe Mode by repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears, then selecting Safe Mode.

Click Start > (Settings >) Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. If the following program exists -- and it might not -- uninstall it:

begin2search

Open Hijack This and click Scan. If they still exist -- and some might not -- check all of the following entries (make sure you do not miss any):
