I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: start up error message unable to open the file D:\CD manifest.dat

Something is trying to run a program using pointing to a CD file.

This is usually found in the Registry's RunOnce entries.

Try this:

FIRST: Right-click My Computer, select Manage, expand [+] Event Viewer, look at each log for an error entry and double-click it to see details, use info to fix.
OR: Open Regedit ([Start] menu, Run, type regedit)...
...use File, Export option, to backup your Registry...
...use Edit menu, Find, and enter RunOnce in the search field, [OK]....
...look for an entry in every RunOnce found (you may have to expand [+] the entry) and find the specific entry line that calls the file or a program that may be looking for the file and click it to select....
...delete [Del] just the erroneous entry...
...you should use [F3] to continue search until end, to make sure the entry is not anywhere else.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me with an issue I'm having in Vista.

I was trying to navigate to a webpage in Chrome, and then webpages started to refuse to load past a certain point (e.g. the tab would show the page's title, but the tab itself would be entirely blank). When this happened my computer started to freeze for periods of time, after which it would do whatever I had told it to (e.g. I clicked the "x" to close Chrome, which it did after several minutes) for about a second then freeze again.

I decided to restart the PC by holding down the power button. When I turned the PC back on I got the screen saying that one or more of my disks needed to be checked for errors, but I told it to skip the disk check (bad idea, I know, but I was in a terrible mood at the time and wasn't thinking too straight). The computer then froze on that screen, so I restarted it again.

After restarting it the startup repair program ran, as Windows would not start, and took a while checking for errors before asking whether I want to run system restore, which I do. After running system restore it gives me an error message saying:

"The instruction at 0x737e989e referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be read."

I then click on "OK" and the computer goes to a screen with six recovery tools on it (Startup Repair, System Restore, Windows Complete PC Restore, Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool, Command Prompt and Recovery M... Read more

Hi,
I've recently been having problems opening some pages in Internet Explorer. Today for example I wanted to go to HP's support site. I got to the main site but when I clicked on Product Support the page wouldn't open and the message 'javascript:void(0)' appeared in the bottom left hand corner. It seems to be a fairly random problem as it only affects some websites. Grateful for any help in resolving this. Thanks.

I started my PC today and as soon as Windows booted up I got this message for all my startup item(the only way I can get any programs to run is through Safe Mode).Seems to come up for every .exe file I try to run. I started to see the signs of it last night when some applications and games just outright refused to launch. I tried doing a couple of things: I ran Malwarebytes and did a scan found some infections and got rid of them, ran the System File Checker and restarted the computer afterwards, tried to do a System Restore. None of these things helped, however after the Malwarebytes scan some programs did start briefly but then something kicked in and I was unable to launch them again. System File Checker told me that some files were fixed and some were not. My Antivirus software doesn't pick anything up either. I've attached the CBS.log from System File Checker to this post. I had this problem a long time ago but I forgot how I fixed it that time. My OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.
Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this?

I have been upgrading some Lenovo laptops recently to Windows 10. Mainly Thinkpad E531 and E545. Each time I upgrade one, it reboots saying: Unable to start the Dolby Audio driver. Please restart the computer or reinstall the driver if the problem persists." Restarting the laptop does NOT solve the problem. Reinstalling the driver does NOT solve the problem. Unstalling the Conexant 20671 and drivers via Device Manager does NOT solve the problem. Uninstalling the Dolby drivers does not work, either through Settings>System>Apps and Features or through Control Panel. Nor does reinstalling the driver after that. (Although, to be honest I am not sure i am installing the correct driver as I cannot find one for Windows 10 on the Lenovo site.) I tried searching for Dolby is the C: drive search bar for a Dolby.msi (as per this posting https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-11e-Windows-E-and-Edge/Dolby-advanced-problem-with-E531/td-p/1... ) but couldn't find one in the search results. Whilst it is easy to click OK on the error box, it is annoying when it is day after day after day after day etc etc etc. Can someone please help? What that message is telling you is that Adobe Reader is either not on that computer, or is corrupted (in my experience, some versions corrupt quite easily). The probably remedy is to uninstall Adobe Reader (if it is present) and download the latest version.

I've got some strange behavior going on with .doc files at the moment. Whenever I try to open a .doc file from Windows Explorer or a desktop shortcut, Word opens with the error message "Word experienced an error trying to open the file. Try these suggestions. * Check the file permissions for the document or drive. *Make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space. *Open the file with the Text Recovery converter."

After clicking OK, the .doc file then opens in Word, apparently with no problems at all (I can edit, save, etc.). So basically the error message seems to be wrong, since the file does open properly.

I can open .doc files from within Word (File -> Open) with no error message.

The issue is more of an annoyance than anything else (since the file eventually opens up just fine), but I imagine it'll just become more irritating as time goes on. Any suggestions on how to resolve it? I've been poking around in the Folder Options -> File Types in Explorer without a clear sense of purpose.

I'm running MS Word 2003 SP3 on Windows XP Service Pack 3. If you need any further info, please let me know.

Thanks for your help!

This looks to be a tricky one. I have two PC's running windows 7 Pro with SP2. One can detect and run Canon Toolbox for scanning, the other does not. When running it states error "Unable to open Twain Source". I have not been able to identify the reason why the windows 7 installation runs differently. I have re-installed the windows 7 (upgrade/repair) on the PC that does not work.

I have read forums that recommend adding a system variable to the path. This does not work. I have tried to compare paths, setting, etc between the machines yet they are the same (at least so far).

Windows scanner and camera properties (c:\program files\windows photo viewer) shows the scanner (Canon 8400F). I ran diagnostics and scanner executes successfully. I select scan profiles and it states "No scanner detected". This is puzzling.

I worked with Canon to delete driver, and re-install (after reboot of course). Re-installed Canon tool box 4.9, the driver is for the windows 7 64 bit. Those seem to install correctly. There seems to be some issue with windows 7 as it seems to see a scanner until you run and then it cannot detect it.

It has puzzled Canon, nothing in the forum so far has a solution and I am puzzled as I have spnet many hours on this. Yet it works on one machine but not the other. I have been un-installing several applications but nothing seems to be in conflict. The driver is shown as installed and ok in device manager.

I hope this is enough information to... Read more

A:Canon 8400F - "Unable to open Twain Source" error message

I can fully relate to the problem of installing the train driver for the Canon 8400f scanner. I suddenly found my scanner not working and spent hours trying every idea I could find on the Internet without success. I tried loading and using the scanner on an old XP computer and it worked fine so I knew the scanner wasn't the problem.

I decided my problem somehow involved Windows 7 software. I downloaded and installed all of the upgrades from Microsoft, including over 40 optional ones, and after this the scanner worked fine. I've no idea which of the many upgrades solved the problem as I didn't install them one at a time..

Judging by posts on the Internet many have had or have this problem so perhaps my solution may be of help to others.

Any quick help would be greatly appreciated. I was trying to fix some BSOD's and windows update issues on a friend's pc. I thought i was successful until i kept getting "Setup has detected that .NET Framework 4 needs to be repaired. Do not restart your computer until the repair is complete."

After some research, I thought I could resolve the issue with the .net framework cleanup tool. After attempting that, now I get the "Application was unable to start properly (0xc0150004)" error message. The only program I've been able to start has been IE8. This also means I wasn't able to run the BSOD tool you guys provide for posting.

I've tried startup repair more than a couple times. Also tried system restore from the windows recovery environment and it said it was unable to complete. 50% of the time, when trying to get into the recovery environment or just the regular system, I get an "irql_less_or_not_eual" blue screen.

When i originally started working on the pc i cleaned a bunch of viruses off (or so i thought). I have a sneaking suspicion that this issue was caused by a virus with a sneaky backdoor and is masquerading as some .net files.

the system was built by my friend and has: Asus p5ql pro MOBO, Intel core 2 duo, currently 4gigs mem (2x2gb corsair), NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS and a WD HD.

I hope I've given some good starting information.

Thanks

Update: I was able to figure out a hack to get through. If I enable the UAC, and then explicitly run each program with admin rights, it asks for permission, then the programs run without a hitch.

So... Since I hate UAC, how do I fix this?

I have a Dell Pentium 4 (1.7MH) running Windows XP SP-2. When I trie and save a file from the command prompt using an application such as a text editor, or word processor (dos based) I received the above message. There is a box (from MS Edit) with buttons "retry" "cancel" "help". I clicked on help and this information was displayed:

Edit is unable to create or access the specified file, which might be due to the following reasons:

» You may be trying to create or write to a file on a drive that is read-only, such as a CD-ROM or a read-only network drive.
» You may be trying to overwrite a file that is read-only.
» You may be trying to access a file that is locked by another user or program.
» You may be trying to read or write to a directory name.

The situation is this: I can only save a file if I rename that file (using save as.) I've made sure that this happens with or without long file names. I've have 3 hard drive installed and the same thing happens on all the drives and in root and sub directories. I've used different DOS based programs in CMD.EXE console including MS Edit; Wordperfect 5.1; and PEDIT (among others) all showing the same behavior.

There is no problem in Windows based programs. I have not changed my environment variables, etc. The behavior was sudden and it's still continuing.

I must rename the file in order for it to be saved, then copy it at the prompt to the file name that I really want. I'... Read more

Have downloaded and run the stand alone Windows Update troubleshooter program to no avail. It continues to repair the same issues, but still results
in the same errors.

Also attempted to install - Windows8-RT-KB2937636-x64/ "Update for Windows (KB2937636)" resulted in "failed to install".

Hey hey, this is my first post on this forum, so Hello.

I'm after a bit of help. My friend's laptop has a problem; Vista loads up, but gets stuck with an error message "Interactive logon process initialization has failed".

I've googled for a fix to this problem, and have had some success. I made a bootable Vista restore disc on a USB stick and have copied C:\Windows\System32\winevt\Logs\Application.evtx to view on my own laptop. I've identified a manifest file that I think I can just write over with a working version of, but I'm on Windows 7 on my laptop, so haven't got a copy of the right manifest file.

What's the best way of getting it?

The file I need is C:\Windows\WinSxS\manifests\x86_microsoft.windows.c..-controls.resources_6595b64144ccf1df_6.0.6001.18000_en-us_72e6f33f34dfabb9.manifest

I would be happy for someone to email a copy of this file over to me. Seems like the quickest solution (?)

Thanks

A:Copy a manifest file

Think this is it.

I am experiencing a problem that only recently started occurring. While connected to the internet, it works fine for the first 2.5 hours. After that time my internet connection dies, and when I click on my wireless adaptor utility to check the status I get the following message: "The IPHLPAPI.DLL file cannot start - Check the file to determine the problem." - and can no longer connect to the internet unless I reboot. Each time I do reboot, however, it is fine for another 2.5 hours and once again the internet connection dies.

I have tried removing and reinstalling my network adapter and software (Syntax USB-400), renamed and reinstalled IPHLPAPI.DLL, scanned my system using SpyBot, Ad-Aware and Norton Antivirus (which are all up to date) and found nothing wrong. I have also followed the suggestion in the MS support link article 823256 which pertains to this issue (although the 'symptoms' in this article refers to 'installation of MS broadband networking hardware') but this has not helped either. It reacts as if there is a set timer causing it to crash every 2.5 hours. Otherwise the system functions perfectly. Is there a resolution anyone can think of that I may be overlooking?

Please advise as this issue is becoming very frustrating.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

I have a WHS 2011 server that cannot update. According to the checkSUR log I an missing the following file winsxs\manifests\wow64_microsoft-windows-ie-htmlrendering_31bf3856ad364e35_9.4.8112.20554_none_92a2291542613f64.manifest. Through the registry I determined the file is associated with update kb2722913. I also found evidence that the file is located in that kb on the microsoft website. When I expand the update and look for the manifest file I cannot find it. I have usedwinrar, 7-zip, and the console command to expand and view the files. In fact there are no files in the kb that start with wow64. Does anyone have any idea where I can get this manifest and get the server back up and running. I was missing 2 manifests but I was able to get one manifest out of a different kb using the tutorial on SUR in these forums. I tried to uninstall kb23722913 and that failed. I also tried to reinstall the kb and that also did not work

Hello all, I have searched the forum and Google and not found anything on this. Whenever I use RUN, and type in msconfig, and hit enter I get the error message below. If I hit cancel it starts just fine with no apparent side effects.

Here is the error:

A problem was encountered while processing the custom tools manifest file (C:\Windows\system32\MSCFGTLC.XML). Please check the file for errors and verify that all expected tools are displayed.

The thing is, the file mentioned (MSCFGTLC.XML) doesnt exist on my system. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

**EDIT** Btw, this is a new system, not upgraded from XP. Thanks again!

I've been getting messages that say "This application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect" for nearly all my programs. My Internet Explorer 64bit still works, as does notepad and a handful of other applications.

I spent the past few days researching how to fix this, and have tried several things to no avail-
- sfc/ scannow in the command prompt finds a corrupted file but can't fix it
- restoring my computer to a previous point, even several weeks back, has no effect.
- restarting my computer in safe mode and then trying sfc/ scannow didn't help. in fact, now my laptop is stuck in safe mode.
- I did a virus scan with TrendMicro, but just caught some spyware and low-threat items.
- Anything I download comes up with the sidebyside error when I try and install it.

Through the event log, I have located the problem manifest file. I'm at home right now and might be able to replace the corrupted/broken one with a working file from my family's home computer. My question is if I should go ahead with the procedure and see if it will work?

Here are my specs:
Dell Studio XPS 1340
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor p8600
4GB RAM
Windows Vista Home Premium
Service Pack 1

My home computer is the same OS as this one.

This problem happened pretty much without warning- my laptop worked fine in the morning and then later that evening the problems began occuring. I did drive with it from Lubbock to San Antonio but I doubt that would have effected t... Read more

As the Microsoft W10-offer is about to run out, and as I have not been able to take them up on it due to missing files which made Microsoft roll back the upgrade, I present my problem here so to have it resolved in time.
I prefer an upgrade so I don't have to reinstall all my programs.

My Checksurlog indicates 1 CSI Manifest Missing and 41 CSI Payload Files Missing.
In the thread Windows Update Manifests - Manually Trace Through Registry the missing manifest was found to be related to a KB-number in the value > CBS_package_10_for_kb976325~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.0.1.0.976325_13c20f60bc4ede2f.
In MY case what I found as the relevant value was: i!CBS_win8ip-microsoft-windows-graphics-package~31bf3856ad364e35~a_5314668a6eda86f6. NO KB-number there. So how to proceed?
