Crackling sound in speakers when video playing/playing games/anything with graphics

Q: Crackling sound in speakers when video playing/playing games/anything with graphics

So I recently opened my CPU because it was lagging and I thought maybe a little clean up might do the trick. So I softly brushed the drivers inside the CPU to get some dust off. However, when I turned on my PC, it seems that whenever I watch videos or play games, a loud crackling sound comes out from my speakers. I don't know what is causing this.

I have tried disabling my drivers (sound and display) but to no avail. However, if I mute the volume on my sound driver, the sound disappears. Which lead me to the conclusion that it might be a conflict of sound and display.

Since the problem only occured when I opened my CPU and cleaned it, it might also be a wiring problem or something.

Can someone help me on this?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Have you tried a different set of speakers? Make sure the speakers are all the way plugged into the jack.

Earlier this year, I came to this forum to get help for a BSOD problem. I found out that it was caused by my onboard soundcard which I have now replaced with a seperate soundcard from Icidu (PCI 7.1 Soundcard Optical S/PDIF In & Out - Soundcard - Audio).

I have tried several soundcards but I cannot fix this crackling sound issue. It mostly occurs whenever something is loading it seems, in soundcloud tracks for instance. Also, the windows startup sound sounds like yanking a cat in its tail. The driver IS up to date, there is no cpu throttling and the sound card itself is fine - there are no problems in linux.

Just for the record, here are my specs:

MS Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 @ 2.83GHz 45 ?C

I've recently purchased a brand new PC for gaming, i'll list the specs below.
i7-2700k Intel CPU (3.5GHz) + Fan
8GB DDR3 RAM (16gb Max)
500gb Sata III Hard Drive, 7200RPM
Asus Motherboard (ASUS P8H61-MLE USB3)
NVidia GTX550Ti Performance Video Card, 1.0g GDDR5 RAM, VGA/DVi/HDMi
Wireless 802.11 b/g/n
500W PSU
Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium

I've downloaded steam and bought a few games e.g. Arma 2, Skyrim, Blacklight Retrobution and my system crashes when I play these games after about 5-10 minutes. The screen goes black to a "NO SIGNAL" image and my speakers make a loud humming noise much like the sound is on repeat. The only solution is to perform a hard shutdown by holding the power button.

I've checked the VGA cable is connected correctly and i've updated my graphics cards drivers. I've also let Windows perform all the updates as it's a new computer.

It's beyond me now so that's why i've come to you guys.

I'd appreciate any help on the matter.

Went to town and bought a DVI cable to see if that would change anything, it lasts a little longer then crashes again.

I installed an internal monitoring system and saw that the graphics card temp went to 76C when playing Arma 2 then crashed.

I've posted this issue before on numerous support fourms, and none of them or I could figure out this issue. It's been driving me nuts.

A couple months ago I cleaned my computer (plugged everything out, cleaned the area/computer, etc.) when I put everything back together and booted up, I had no sound, but the tray icon indicated sound was indeed going through. As far as I knew nothing had been changed. I made sure everything was plugged in correctly, reinstalled the drivers, made sure I didn't click something off I shouldn't have, but still nothing. But then I plugged in headphones into the tower headphone jack, and boom I had sound. I was as surprised as everyone else. Someone suggested then, to rule out a hardware issue, that I download Ubuntu and see if the sound problem occurs there. It didn't, I had sound coming out of my speakers.

I would hate to re-install Win, as I've gone without doing so for five years. But if it came down to it, it's whatever.

I use the on-board sound from my MB, as I've learned over the years sound cards are a thing of the past. But perhaps I could reattach the old one I have? It's sadly over 10 years old however, I don't know if it would be worth trying. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Major cudos if we're able to figure this out once and for all. Good luck

Hello, I've been having problems for quite some time now and upon google search after search there doesn't seem to be an answer. When the audio is on, for videos, games, music, etc. it sometimes "skips" like an old cd player. Its pretty obnoxious, and I'm wondering why exactly this is so. I'm assuming I have an old driver or something, because I upgraded my pc from win 7 to win 8 pro. Thanks for the help and let me know if anyone needs clarification!

A:Jittery sound when playing music/video games (Win 8 Pro)

Audio is always on a shared Interrupt (IRQ) with a higher priority device. Depending on the shared device, it can "interrupt" the audio and cause skipping.

If you have the HP supplied IDT audio driver for Win 7, it is also compatible for Win 8. However, check the Device Manager and see what devices are listed in the Sound section. You should ONLY have the correct IDT sound driver and possibly HDMI audio (if your system has this) and nothing else. If "HD Audio Codec" (the generic Windows installed sound driver) is also listed, or any other sound, except the IDT and possibly HDMI, uninstall those as they can cause conflicts and other audio problems. Restart the PC if you uninstalled anything.

If you only have the correct entries in the sound, RIGHT click on the entry for the IDG and then LEFT click "Uninstall" (do not uninstall the drivers). Then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound. This will fix any potential corruptions between Windows and the sound and sometimes will put the sound on a different shared IRQ and fix or mimimize any interruptions.

I'm running:
Windows 7 Professional computer 64 bit
4.0GB of RAM
AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 955 Processor 3.20 GHz

The system constantly crashes when playing video games and games consistently lag. We have completely re-installed the OS and replaced all parts in the PC at least twice. When the system crashes the speakers buzz loudly, although sometimes it sounds like it's coming from the computer itself.

We switched from Nvidia because everything has checked out and it was hoped that the problem was the hardware not playing nice to no avail. I'm still getting the same error/crash.

A:Routine crashing with buzzing sound when playing video games.

All except last one showed up a WHEA error stating that there was a timeout failure of the northbridge bus between CPU and RAM. Commonly this is due to a mobo, RAM or CPU failure. Just to make sure, if you believe your system is stable enough, you can attempt updating your BIOS for your mobo as that can commonly fix things. In most cases however, this is a problem that will only be resolved by swapping hardware.

If you wish, you can run some hardware tests as followed in the order given:

RAM: Memtest86+ - 7+ passes
CPU: Prime95 - Torture Test; Blend; overnight (9+ hours)
GPU: MemtestCL - Run twice (if any of the tests work on your GPU; ATI cards will need to install the ATI APP SDK as it requires OpenCL)

All of these (excluding MemtestCL) are included in the UBCD if you prefer a Live CD environment (which is the best environment to test hardware on). Note that Prime95 currently does not work on the latest version of UBCD. Also, please provide us temps/voltages using HWInfo with Sensors only option checked. Log two 30-minute instances: one for idle, and one for high load. If you can get the system to crash during high load logging, that's even better.

I'm having a real issue with my WMP and VLC...
While watching movies, I am getting popping and crackling noises and at the same time, the video will stutter.  This just started happening around 2 weeks ago.  Today, when I tried to play a Hidden Object game, it was doing the same thing.  I have tried updating the drivers for audio, DirX and RealTek.  I have removed and reinstalled both Realtek HD Audio Manager and VLC.  I've also tried adjusting the settings on both the WMP and VLC.  Today I ended up doing a System Restore because I feared that maybe I had changed something I shouldn't have and whatever I was doing seemed to make my problem worse.
I'm at my wits end and extremely frustrated.  I'm hoping someone here in Bleeping Computer Land can help me with this.
Thank you.

Latest driver download listed above - the general procedure for updating sound drivers is to uninstall the old driver firstly, reboot, then install the new driver - driver version listed : 1.04.0090

If that doesnt work or you already have that driver you could enable your onboard audio and download the driver for it here :
ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Motherboards- ASUS P7H55-M LX

Or search using the manual search for a vista 32 bit driver and try this if it doesnt install normally, and produces an error (we were doing this all the time with beta versions of w7 with a high sucess) :

To install a driver/program in compatibility mode - right click the setup.exe file - click properties - click compatibility - check run in compatibility with vista - check run as administrator - leave the rest blank. Start setup.exe and install.

Hello there,

I just got myself registered and I have some problems with my sounds (text is copied from sevenforums; some may know it).

You could describe the problem as a sound clicking or crackling. Those appear in various situations, for example when playing a MP3, videos from YT, gamesounds (especially Assetto Corsa: when revving the engine, shifting down etc.) and so on. Mostly they occur when the sound starts or ends (for example a cut in a film), even the simple windows-sound when adjusting the volume has this problem, when i rappidly klick on the volume-slider.

Things i tried, nothing of them helped:

Reinstalled Windows 7 several times, upgraded to Win10, reinstalled Win10 bought a new headset (QH-95), bought two different soundcards (Asus Xonar D1 and Asus Xonar U7), bought a new mainboard (ASRock Z77 Pro3, same as my old one), updated all drivers (reinstalled windows), checked the sound with the Latency Check-programm (everything is green), tried playing the sounds without soundcard (Asus Xonar D1) , changed sound frequienzies, played audio without WiFi on, played audio without any devices (apart from headset and mouse), checked with and defragmentaded my harddrive.

There is still no solution until this day. I slowly start to belive i'm the only one who can hear those sounds, it's just crazy and and the same time also depressing.

A:Sound crackling, clicking etc. when playing sounds

Hello and welcome Florian mate sorry for the wait but it is a strange problem.

Now what immediately pops up for me is you equipment on an electrical circuit that is quite close to anything that uses microwave devices - phones, ovens, wireless communications or even wired communication stuff ? ham radio??

Now another thing that I think of is the sound card sitting snuggly in that slot and are the connecting cables also a snug fit?

Now I suggest you clean the slots and sticks cards etc first. I also have to assue all drivers are up to date?

Now as for the slots toclean them use a strip of old credit card (or any card thin enough some arebetter than others ) about 1/2 inch wide nip the corners off one end - preferably round them offhold a piece of thin lint free cloth over theend dab on some form of alcohol - isopropyl alcohol (what we swab the skin withbefore an injection) is good and GENTLYswipe along the slots.

This can also be done for the GPU slot/s andalso the contacts of the sticks or cards - not the stick but some lint freecloth of course. See my pic for the stick but please be very gentle doing it ifyou are in any doubt - please ask before doing it but I use this all the timeand have yet to damage anything.

Lastly but not necessarily the end can you read my ditty and post back your findings

I've seen this crackling sound problem around the internet. After my research for hours, here is what I got: 1. I used 'DPC Latency Checker V1.4.0'. It was found that some devices, i.e. modem, usb, wifi, are interupting the sound card making crackling noise which is really loud and noisy. 2. Changing the bit rate between 16 bit and 24 bit doesn't help. 3. Update speaker driver to 'Realtex 6.3.9600.116' and 'Intel Smart Sound Technology' won't help. 4. Turn off the Audio Enhancement in DTS studio sound doesn't help. 5. Disable WIFI driver for a while won't help. *6. Hello, I have a question. My Lenovo Yoga 720 15.6" doesn't overheat, although I've noticed something rather odd. When I play Fifa 17 with the charger plugged in, the fans are very loud and the laptop gets pretty hot. When I play Fifa 17 on battery only (charger not plugged in) the fans are quite silent and the laptop doesn't get hot at all. Why is that? For all I know, I would expect the exact opposite...Thanks in advance!Kind regards,Tijs

The CPU runs at full speed when it is plugged in and runs more slowly on battery to save power.  Faster = more heat.

I have Logitech X-530 speakers, a 5.1 setup. Yesterday I wanted to use my headset to play a game, so I had to change my settings to stereo to get the sound out of both the left and right headphones. When I had finished, I changed it back to 5.1 through the control panel, but now the sound is only playing out of the left and right speakers. All speakers are functional, since when I test it through the control panel the 'bing' sound plays through all one-by-one. The speakers worked fully in 5.1 before I changed the settings.

Hey everyone. I have a quick question maybe someone could please help me with. Here goes...

I have Altec Lansing speakers (2 speakers and a sub) on my Windows XP. I was watching a movie and my sound just quite on me. No popping noise, nothing. Just silence. I didn't have the volume really high, nor the bass.
The speakers still have power and turn on. I tried plugging them into my Ipod, nothing. Tried just the left speaker in my Ipod and it actually worked!
(Setup= left speaker to the right speaker, right speaker to the sub woofer, sub to the computer and wall.)
I don't think it's software because head phones work with my computer.
So, does anyone have any ideas why the speakers don't work?

P.S. Speaker serial number: CHW0529366

A:My speakers quite playing sound for me... help plz!

setup you write is common for altec lansing speaker, but can you tell us what series is yours? I mean if you cant try to find the pic on the internet.

I know what you mean by putting in the left speaker to the ipod. It was just like a piece of ACS45.1

Do you know how long have been your speaker works? If it;s old, maybe some component need to be replaced i.e wires and some capacitor.

If you have the RealTek enabled, disable it in the BIOS. It can cause conflicts and potentially the problem you have. Windows 7 will only allow one default audio playback device, unlike XP that would allow more.

What is the make and model of the computer? What operating system and sound card are you using? This information will help us narrow down the problem.

I would start by checking your Windows audio settings for anything you can mute or un-mute that would be related to the issue. I would check the sound card manufacturer's program as well if there is one, they usually have a lot of additional settings like "detect headphones when plugged in" that can cause this.

So pretty much what is happening is my speakers will start to buzz when sound isnt playing. I have an Audigy 2 soundblaster but when I go to update my drivers on my sound stuff its Sigmatel High Definition Audio CODEC.

When I play music or anything that produces a sound on my computer, my speakers work great! But when there is a pause in sound playing, I get this buzzing sound that is at the same level of volume as the sound or music playing before it paused. Now this problem goes off and on but im tired of having to deal with it.

I updated my drivers on it and for a while it worked fine, then all of the sudden it came back again.

What would be great is if anybody would know how to fix this damn problem! Thanks in advance to helping me out!

Well, i have 5.1 creativ speakers got about 2 years back. they worked fine with wxp but when i upgraded to wvista and w7 all hell broke loose. at a point in time in vista i got the rear speakers to work. when i upgraded to w7, i also got the rear speakers to work eventually. i now have a new motherboard with shitty drivers and can't get the rear speakers to work. in the tests they work but when i play music, watch movies anything nothing comes out of the front centre or rear speakers. any help guiz?
p.s. the drivers my mobo uses are VIA HD Audio deck. i've tried uninstall all sound drivers and reinstalling but to no aveil
p.s. also at one point in time few days ago everything was working but the next day the rears just stopped...

A:5.1 Speakers rear and mid sound not playing any sound apart from test

did all the speakers sound when test in via hd audio deck or windows 7 audio control panel?

if yes, most likely you will need to enable the 'upmix' feature of VIA. I'm not sure what is it called, but in Realtek it is called Realtek Speaker Fill or Dolby ProLogic IIx. If there isn't any, you may want to try Channel Mixer for foobar2000.

In the Windows audio playback tab there's only "speakers" but sound is playing from both speakers and the headphones, with headphones plugged into the right jack. I checked the Realtek Control Panel and there was F**K ALL for options there (see attached). There is an Intel(R) Display Audio in Device Manager alongside Realtek High Definition Audio. So now I can't watch warm-up videos at school without blasting the sounds through my speakers as well.

I tried a System Restore to before the problem started but it didn't do anything. The problem started around the time I ran an Advanced Systemcare 8 scan, which does the following tasks:
Spyware Removal
Registry Fix
Privacy Sweep
Junk Files Clean
Internet Boost
Shortcuts Fix
Registry Defrag
System Optimization
Security Defense
Disk Scan
Vulnerability Fix (Windows Updates)
Disk Optimization
Also when I move my laptop it shuts off for some reason, so it could've interupted the scan or updates or something.
System Specs included inside attached DxDiag.

I've tried everything to fix this problem. I plugged my headphones into my laptop, playing music and I can still hear the music through the speakers.

A:Headphones plugged in, but speakers are still playing sound

Hello @misspatrice, Thank you for re-visiting the HP Forums! I understand that there is audio playing from both your speakers and headphones on your HP 15-ac135ds. Begin by performing a hard reset. Once the notebook is back on, follow the No Sound from Speakers document which shows you how to use the audio troubleshooter. HP Notebook PCs - No Sound from Speakers (I know the document says Windows 8 but the steps should be the same for Windows 10) There is also an accepted resolution to an issue similar to this posted by @SuperMario1 at this link: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Audio/Headphones-plugged-in-but-speakers-are-still-playing-sou... After completing these steps I'm sure the audio will be working correctly! If this information has helped you resolve the issue, click the thumbs up!

So I built this computer a few weeks ago with Windows 7 Ultimate. Everything sound-wise has been working til a few days ago, but I have been working through some video problems.
Since this started on Friday, the sound mixer/volume control shows sound playing. But nothing comes out the speakers. When I click the top, it doesn't say 'speakers', it says 'Realtek audio'. When I click that, the sound window comes up and under "jacks" it says "rear optical jack." The top says S/PDIF. Those are both formats that I have never used on this system. I've always used only the rear panel analog jack.

Anyways, I feel like I've tried everything under the sun and I'm close to RMA'ing the motherboard. It's that bad. Anyhelp is uber appreciated. Thanks guys

A:No audio in speakers -at all-, Windows is playing sound

Go to the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound Panel. In the Playback section, your "Speakers" should be set as the default playback device. It sounds like the digital is now set as playback.

A:Headphones plugged in, but speakers are still playing sound ...

Hello lee522, Welcome to the HP Forums!I understand there is sound coming from both the speakers and headphones. To resolve the issue, please try these basic steps: 1. Go into Control Panel, then Sound.2. Look for the Recording tab.3. Select your microphone/headset as the default device, and press OK. If these steps do not work, this Microsoft forum has a few more suggestions: How prevent sound from playing through both headphones and speakers Please let me know your results. Thanks! Mario

I bought the plantronics .Audio 335 studio headphones, but when I plugged them in, it screwed up my sound. My compute'rs sound is now playing through both the headphones AND the laptop speakers. After unplugging it and trying again a couple times, I gave up and decided to just use my old headphones.

Except for the sound still played through both the headphones and laptop speakers.

Distraught, I restarted my computer. When that didn't work, I restored my system to a point I made yesterday. Still no luck. I've been scrounging google for a few hours now, and nothing is helping. Any ideas? I REFUSE to refresh my system and reinstall all of my programs again.

This is urgent. I'm a freelance musician and require headphones for my work.

Have you tried with and without the microphone adapter? In your sound device manager see if there is a setting you can change when the headphones are plugged in.

I just installed AIMP3 player
Put in a CD in the tray and Windows Media Player opened as default player
It played fine.
Closed WMP

Went to Windows Explorer and to the drive location (E), and rt clicked on the 1st track and it gave me Open With options, I chose AIMP3.
Track played

Went to
Start / Default Programs / Change AutoPlay settings and changed Audio CD to Open with AIMP3 using AIMP
re-inserted CD
It started playing using AIMP3, I can see the visualization moving and it moves thru the tracks, but no sound to speakers.

There must be a switch I didn't flip somewhere...
Any ideas on where?

A:Installed AIMP3 - No sound to speakers when playing CD

I have to guess, as there isn't enough system info and I don't have AIMP3.

But, as it plays OK with Windows Media Player, it says something in AIMP3 is not configured correctly. Check the options in AIMP3, make sure your "Speakers" are set as the default playback device.

My computer was blue screening. I had a warranty RMA through my manufacturer and I just got it back, fixed. However since then, my Logitech X-530 5.1 surround speakers have been messed up. Initially I thought the front two were not working, but when I was testing I found the Left Rear works and the Right Rear sound comes through the Front Left speaker. The Subwoofer is fine, but the Right Front and Rear have no sound. To be more clear, when my realtek audio manager tests the front two speakers, there is zero sound. When it checks the LR it comes through the LR fine, but the RR comes through the LF speaker. I've unplugged, checked wires, made sure everything was plugged in correctly, and I reinstalled my realtek HD audio driver also. Can anybody offer some help? Thanks.

Hello, I haven't played games on my computer in a few months. Now that I'm attempting to get back into it, i'm having an issue where colors are going nutty on me. Basically theres like a green and red replica of every image in the game, it looks kind of like old school 3D imaging. I tried taking screenshots, but they all came out just black for some reason. Also noteworthy, whenever I load up any game I get a message on my screen, I forget what it says but to get it off of the screen I have to press Ctrl+Alt+Insert.

My kids use my computer more than I do now days so I'm not sure if they did something to change the settings or if it's the graphics card going on me. Any and all information would be greatly appreciated.

I've been using the onboard audio/sound from my motherboard on my XP desktop for the past 4 years. I bought a 5.1 surround sound set of speakers from Logitech (x-530) about 3 years ago, but only used the FL, FR, and subwoofer, because my mobo doesn't support surround sound -- it doesn't have the rear / center+subwoofer jacks that my speakers need to plug into.

Today I bought a Dynex 5.1 sound card from Best Buy ($30) -- opened my tower, popped the sound card into an available port, installed the drivers from the CD, restarted the computer, set the output to 5.1 in the Sounds and Audio Devices window from the control panel, in the "Audio Deck" (the software that came with the card) I set it to 6 channel, made sure all of the speakers were plugged into the subwoofer which connects to the front-right speaker, and plugged the green, black, and orange plugs from the FR speaker into the proper jacks on the sound card, turned some test music on....

And it's just coming out of the same two front speakers and the subwoofer like it was when I was running just the mobo audio. I've tried a few DVDs with PowerDVD but likewise, the sound is not coming out of the rear or center speakers. Then again I'm using the free version, I think. At least, under the audio tab in configurations it doesn't have any settings that specify surround, just 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8 speakers. I tried each setting, but there's never any sound coming from the... Read more

A:5.1 surround troubles -- rear speakers not playing sound

Dynex is not a company known for quality in their products, so it may be simply that the sound card is of poor build quality. However, I think it is more likely that you simply do not have any surround capable games or programs. Since these programs do not support surround sound, nothing will come out of the rear speakers. I have experienced this problem with my Logitech X-540s when I use a program with no surround support.

I realized that my graphics card (Geforce 6800GT)idles at 59C, but slowly builds up to 70C when I play a game. At this point, my mouse light starts to flicker, and freeze constantly etc etc. There are also chances of getting a nv4_mini.sys BSoD. My question is, is it normal for the 6800GT to go up 10C just by playing a game? It isnt even that graphic intensive (CS 1.6, Warcraft 3). Currently, I have one side of the PC case opened for more air flow. It lowered temperatures a bit (i use to have temperatures up to 80C) but it still doesn't seem to be enough. Are there any options besides buying fans?

A:Graphics Card Overheating while playing games

It is normal for temperatures to rise during a game but your temperatures are a bit high. You could remove the heatsink and fan, clean the old thermal compound off and reapply some Arctic Silver and reinstall the heatsink/fan to the graphics card. As long as your fan is capable of getting up to full song, your temps should go down. Anyway, it's cheap to try.

Recently upgraded my computer - Below specs:

Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Intel 4790k not OC
2133 Corsair Vengeance Pro 8gb x2
2x MSI GTX680 Twin Frozr (Original was in previous build - Bought second one used)
1000w EVGA Platinum P2 PSU

BSOD only appears when running anything graphics intensive (playing assetto corso/project cars)

More recently, I attempted to OC the cards to:
+100 Core Clock
+0 Memory

After running Kombustor for approximately 2mins, cards reached 79degrees Celsius and BSOD..

Any help is appreciated.

Try to roll back the display driver to an earlier version? It looks like the latest display driver is causing issues for you.

Hi! I have been getting BSOD's when i play games.

I have tried a bunch of things some of them worked for a day and then i start getting BSOD's again. Its not creating .dmp files.

It only happens in more graphically demanding games such as League of Legends, Team Fortress 2 ( even though they are not that demanding). Thanks in advanced!

Edit: I got it to create a dump file, you can find it below.
