Custom security settings for users needed

Q: Custom security settings for users needed

Hi all

New user here. I'm pretty good with Windows and computers in general, but can't figure out this new problem. I started worked from home recently, and find myself easily distracted by going online (facebook, etc) or going through my personal files on my computer.

I download an app called Cold Turkey which works well for blocking websites and programs I shouldn't be using during work hours. This is great.

To block myself from my personal files, I installed another hard drive to save my work files on. Then I created a standard user (my work account) and blocked it from accessing my personal hard drive. (My C: drive is separate SSD). I then made another standard user for my personal desktop, and used the parental settings to not allow me to login to that account during work hours. I let my wife create a password for the admin user, which I am not allowed to know, and I only change settings with her letting me into the admin user.

In summary, as it stands:
work user: standard, no access to personal drive
personal user: standard, restricted to login during non-work hours only
admin user: full rights, only my wife knows the password

Now, the problems. I can't install new software under my work user or my personal user without my wife being home to insert the password. This is annoying and unnecessary and sometimes I need to install something for work and I have to wait until later when she's home.

Second, there is one program in my personal user desktop that is better if run as an Admin, but it won't let me unless she puts in the password every time I run it.

So, ideally, I could like my personal user to be restricted to login times, but allow me to install programs and run software as admin.

Is there some way to do this within Windows 7? Or is there a third-party software I can use to do this?

Thanks for any help!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Update: A document written by the hackers has clarified what they did and what privacy and security risks they believe the PlayStation 3 poses. The PS3's connection to PSN is protected by SSL. As is common to SSL implementations, the identity of the remote server is verified using a list of certificates stored on each PS3. The credit card and other information is sent over this SSL connection. So far so good; this is all safe, and your web browser depends on the same mechanisms for online purchases.
The concern raised by the hackers is that custom firmwares could subvert this system. A custom firmware can include custom certificates in its trusted list. It can also use custom DNS servers. This raises the prospect of a malicious entity operating his own proxies to snaffle sensitive data. He would distribute a custom firmware that had a certificate corresponding to his proxy, and that used a DNS server that directed PSN connections to the proxy. His proxy would decrypt the data sent to it, and then re-encrypt it and forward it to the real PSN servers.

Since the search engine doesn't work on this forum, I'll create a new post. I'm trying to set up different IE security settings for the different users on my XP Home machine. Specifically, I want more strict settings when my kids are logged in.

I can't seem to figure out how to change the settings for a specific user. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

I'm talking about: mssefullinstall-x86fre-en-us-xp.exe, which is in essential a few msi's (mp_ambits.msi, msse.msi and some other files).
I can do a silent install by using the switch /s /runwgacheck

I'd like to create a silent install with custom settings (Schedule Day/Time).

What is the best way to do that?

Regkey's: I find the custom regkey's (ScheduleDay.reg, ScheduleTime.reg) but I can't import them after the silent install (I think it's only possible by the system account?)
Can I use transformfiles?

I hope someone can help me work this out, it's driving me crazy!
I'll try to explain it in as few words as possible!
There is a website we need to access on which we're having trouble getting some of the buttons to display.  In short it works when the internet zone is set to "Medium" but not when it's "Medium-High" (I have added it to trusted sites
but in properties it shows as "Unknown Zone (Mixed)" so seems to use the "Internet Zone" settings.)
I am trying to track down which security setting is causing the issue.  To do this my plan was to make a note of all the settings that differ between Medium and Medium-High.  However if I set it to medium-high and manually change all the settings
to be identical to medium it still doesn't work... yet if I use the "Reset to: Medium" option at the bottom it does work!  This doesn't make any sense to me.
Are there other hidden stetting affected by the "Reset to" option that I can't change manually.
Any help would really be appreciated!  Thanks!

Kaspersky Endpoint Security 10 for Windows components installed on a workstation according to installation type: Basic, Standard, Full

On the webpage above plzz check the basic installation.

I am not going to install IM & Mail protection.

I can safely avoid "Kaspersky Security Center Connector" & "Vulnerability Monitor" too i.e not install it, right? Or it will affect protection?

In the Custom Install screenshot on the webpage below 2nd option is the "Kaspersky Security Center Connector" mentioned above, right?

Anyway Kaspersky Security Center Connector is more related on the server connection which primarily use on business/enterprise to connect into single host. [seems technical on the word description] Link .

It will not affect the protection, same goes to Vulnerability Monitor since its just check for your installed application on latest version.

Hey all, I know about the method for creating the default profile for users by sysprepping during the install but after installation how do I change the default wallpaper new users will see upon first login without using GPOs?

So far I've found the C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper\Windows\img0.jpg file and replaced it with my company's wallpaper but then saw that new users were still getting a cached version of the default wallpaper. I saw the cached wallpaper location was under %AppData% and checked under the default profiles appdata and couldnt find any cached wallpaper setting there, and checked under where the lockscreen wallpaper is cached under C:\programdata\Microsoft\Windows\SystemData but couldnt find anything there either.

Thanks for any help!

A:Custom default Wallpaper for new users after installation

The wallpaper new local users will see when their accounts are created and they sign in first time will most definitely be the one set in Audit Mode if the COPYPROFILE component in answer file is set to TRUE.

This also applies to those Microsoft account users who have disabled theme sync. MS account users with theme sync enabled will always see their own synced wallpaper when account is first time signed in.

All MS account synced settings replace any customizations made to the default profile.

If your local users will not see the company wallpaper, you have done something wrong.

I recently did a full hard drive zero wipe and 7 home premium reload on a custom built pc.  Corsair 500 watt psu, 16 gb ram, MSI H77(some letter I forget)-G43 motherboard.  All went well and it ran fine at my place.  I got it all loaded up with my usual programs, office 2010 pro plus, adobe reader, flash player, new version of java, avg free, malwarebyes, ccleaner, chrome, vlc media player. And it was good.
I took it back to the owner and the next day he is saying the same problem is happening.  After leaving the computer alone for 15 minutes or so, it shuts down.
It NEVER did this at my place in 2 days of having it there, I checked it and let it sit undisturbed multiple times for this exact issue.  We checked all the power / sleep / hibernate settings, and it is all set to OFF or to never sleep / hibernate.
Any ideas?  I didn't use the owners' keyboard / mouse / monitor at my place, but I can't imagine any of them causing this problem.

Hi all i'm new here so i hope i'm in the right section.
i could do with a little advice/help if poss i'm making a data disc for my cousin and i wish to have a customised folder icon for her, i have made the icon and changed the properties of the folder to display it, that's not the problem, the problem is that when i burn the folder to dvd and then reload on another pc the customised icon reverts to the default windows folder icon, i have tried putting the .ico file in the folder and pointing the folder to that file then burning but still the result is the same, i can bring up the customised icon in computer in place of dvd drive icon by using autorun and pointing to the .ico file both of which i burned in the root of the dvd.
however this is not exactly what i want to do, it is the folder from the disc which i would like to appear customised, i've been on this for over a day now and am about as far as i can go with my knowledge, i hope someone may be able to help me forward a little.

Okay, I've perused the internet for a while now looking for an answer to this problem. several other people have had this problem but no one seems to have a helpful answer. I recently bought a new computer off of Dell. It's a Vostro 420. I was really excited about this new computer because my old computer had become very slow and unable to handle newer pc games. Anyway, recently I have hit a problem that is making me want to move my old computer back out of the basement and hook it up again. All of my custom settings reset themselves randomly when I reboot. My Folder View settings, my application settings, my file type association settings, EVERYTHING goes back to system default, and it's really starting to annoy. I'm sure it is a problem with the registry, but I have made enough mistakes playing with the registry on my old computer to go about fiddling with it without guidance on my new pc. Does anyone know why this is happening and how to fix it? I really need help on this one because it's driving me insane. Many many thanks in advance.

A:All Custom Settings Reset Themselves on Reboot

sounds like you have a corrupt profile.

create a new profile, change some settings, futz around a bit with backgrounds and explorer views and whatever else you want and reboot a few times. if those settings remain, your original profile is probably corrupt.

Previously, I had Outlook in "corporate" mode & outlook.pst stored in a custom location, which I backed up. I would like to continue to use a custom location.

How do I point Outlook 2003 to the custom locaton?

Does Outlook 2003 offer "corporate" and "internet" options? It is my understanding that Outlook 2000 had such options. I have read that the "corporate" option is "better".

Nice not to be posting in a panic with security nightmares flying off the screen!!! Just doing a little security updating and preparation in order to be ready for the next major attack. Walls built, gunpowder dry and sentrys alert. Running Spyblaster, Spybot, Ad-Aware, Norton 2005.

I have installed the latest version of Ad-Aware I am wondering if I should change any of the default settings? Looking under Configuration\Tweak Settings\Cleaning Engine there is the option to leave ticked or to untick: "During removal unload Explorer and IE if necessary". This was ticked. I unticked it thinking this sounds a bit dangerous. However, I am not sure if it is or isn't to tell the truth.

So my questions are: should I leave this setting as it was (ticked) and are there any other settings that should be changed? Or can one just run Ad-Aware sticking with the default settings which would be easy enough.

It seems to me with Ad-Aware that on a new program upgrade you have to uninstall the old one first, thus losing any custom settings you made, before installing the new one...............therefore default is less hassle...but is it best?

This thread has led me to do some preliminary research into how Windows uses the 'Date' formats available.

To access custom date formats go to Control Panel -> Clock, Language, and Region -> Region and Language and click 'Additional Settings...'

Using 'Custom' date formats seems to result in an abnormality with the way applications read the current system date. I've included a couple of examples below...

1 prime example is if you wish to have a more detailed Date on the taskbar which included the day you'd set the following custom date format "ddd dd/mm/yyyy"..

However...The space between the "ddd" and "dd" causes the following abnormalities.

Task Scheduler - Notice the date now has spaces instead of "/"

Same happens in Excel when formatting cells

I also changed them back so as to demonstrate how the default settings work perfectly well.

Task Scheduler - Back to normal

Excel - Back to normal

So as a warning to all who like to use 'Custom' date formats, please be aware that it will alter the way Windows & other apps read the current system date depending on what you've changed & how.

A:Custom Date Settings...Inconcistencies

i've found the system format uses whatever the char. is after the initial ddd as the seperator, if you use

ddd dd/mm/yyyy you get Mon 08 11 2010
ddd, dd/mm/yyyy you get Mon, 08,11,2010

dddd dd/mm/yyyy similarly gives Monday 08 11 2010
dddd, dd/mm/yyyy gives Monday, 08,11,2010

unfortunately ddd/ .... gives Mon/ 08/11/2010.

this messes up the cell formatting, etc in MS office (excel). using a custom format of 'ddd dd/mm/yyyy' rather than a date format works however.

I'm using MDT 2013 and WDS.  I want to be able to have custom settings based on the Task Sequence chosen.  For example, if Task Sequence ID 01 is chosen, the PC will join domain A.  If Task Sequence ID 02 is chosen, it will join domain B.
Currently my CustomSettings.ini file starts with:
Priority=TaskSequenceID, Default
<Stuff I want to happen during Task Sequence ID 01>
<Default actions I want to occur for other tasks>
This is being ignored unless once I choose the task during deployment I open a command prompt, rerun ZTIGather.wsf, then click Back and choose the task again.  I've tried adding ZTIGather.wsf as the first action in the task sequence, but it's not working.
What's the easiest/best way to customize actions based on the task?

I have a Microsoft Mouse (Microsoft M03-00090 Wireless Optical Mouse 5000) with customizable buttons that can be set via the Mouse and Keyboard Center. If I start the Mouse and Keyboard Center, the settings kick-in (even without changing any settings), but I have to do that each time on startup or else the settings are all set to default.

I replaced my Hard Drive this summer and reinstalled Windows 7 with the Disk that came with my Laptop. Ever since then my computer will not accept custom changes.
For instance I change the power settings so that the CPU doesn't turn off when the laptop is plugged in or I change the time before the screen turns off but they are not implemented. When I go into the control panel I see that the settings are exactly how I set them but the computer doesn't change what it's doing.
For instance if I change the time before screen turns of when computer is idle to never, the screen still shuts off after 1 minute even though I can see in the control panel that it has been set to never. I am selecting save changes.
Any ideas?

A:Windows 7 not implementing custom changes/ power settings

I'm not sure but if I remember correctly the screen changes can be made in the power menu as well as the display menu. There is also a difference in the shut downs when you are on AC power or strictly battery.

This is for XP more than for Vista. I have been using Outlook since as far as I can remember but, there are times that I want to ring its neck or tear it apart limb from limb... I guess is better I don't know who the creator is

But I digress... Anyways, back to my original thought. I have been having some issues with Outlook (best to use a new thread for this) so I decided to change to Mozilla Thunderbird but it didn't work like I thought it would (again... new thread). Bottom line is ... I have to go back to Outlook 2003.

My pet peeve is that, even though I back up my pst files, eveytime I need to do a clean Outlook 2003 install or simple migration of sorts, I loose my custom settings, rules & alerts, etc, etc.

Is there an easy way to back up all these custom settings as well so you can migrate Outlook painlessly? I have done the google 'till my eyes drew blood but all I am getting are mixed solutions or me having to install a 3rd party software...

Me and my friend Gary started a Civ4 Project, although the basic idea is simple the concept is a little farfetched. First I should state that we both are using Macintosh OS X and are using the ASPYR Mac versions of the games Civilization IV and the Warlords Expansion. We will be getting the Beyond The Sword Expansion as soon as it comes out for Mac, most likely resulting in multiple updates to the project. The project which we so far call Civilization Progress is so far different from the original game that if we tried a little harder we might get away with selling it as our own game, but we're not even suggesting that at this time. We haven't finished a lot of the work we plan to do yet, seeing as we just started this project around 5PM on Friday July 20th 2007 we haven't had much time to work on it. Gary was supposed to be working on our group website all weekend but for now lets just say he didn't get any of that done, But I'll start on that as soon as I finish this thread, it should be done by tonight. The project is a Civ game with different game play then the previous line FIRAXIS has produced. It has similar features, such as online play through GameSpy, and custom games which can be made through the WorldBuilder which in time will be separated from the Civ game and given added features to make the custom maps easier to make and it will also be given window flexibility. Then I launch loadstate with the same i:/myfile.xml, but nothing happens, just saying OK without doing the job.. Default folders like migapp.xml or migdocs.xml are successfully applicated.
I tested with the following XML file :

I've been reading up on applying Folder View settings to either All Folders or all folders of the same type, but neither of those is quite what I'm looking for.

Specifically, I'd like to write my own utility that reads the folder view settings for any given folder (I assume from the registry), and give that view a name. Then I'd like my program to be able to apply any of my newly named views to any other folder. I particularly want to add an "Apply to Subfolders" feature to this utility.

I'm not looking to distribute this; just for my own personal OCD satisfaction, so I don't mind if it ends up being a kludgy solution.

To that end, I have only two questions, really:

Let's say I have a folder under my documents named "Test" with a bunch of random files of all types in it: Some pictures, some video, some audio, and a bunch of text files. Let's further say I customize the folder view settings for this one folder to be like old-school DOS: Details view showing FileName, Size, Type, Date Modified. Plus I set up the column widths to be "just so."

Windows remembers my settings for this one folder. If I can find them, and read/write them, I can realize my dream of managing my own folder views.

So question #1 is: Where are one-off custom folder view settings stored?

I believe Windows inexplicably holds two different view settings for any given folder under a special folder. For example, If I open "Documents" from the start menu and open t... Read more

[Already posted on Mr Excel but received no replies.]

I've inserted a simple hyperlink in an excel 2003 spreadsheet that links to another excel 2003 workbook. The link works fine and does exactly what it's supposed to do: namely, when I click on it, the target workbook opens.

The minor, though irritating, problem I have is that the hyperlink overrides my custom settings for XP. In the advanced settings of My Computer's properties, I have set the Performance Settings to Custom. There, I have unchecked all the options except 'show windows contents while dragging'. Now, whenever I click on the hyperlink on my worksheet, either XP or Excel overrides my custom settings by checking the 'Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing'. If I go into the custom settings and uncheck the box, it gets re-selected again as soon as I click on the hyperlink.

I can't for the life in me understand why this should happen, as the one does not appear to have any relation to the other. I've tried googling the solution but have come up with nothing. Can anyone tell me what's going on and how I can prevent it from happening?

A:Solved: Excel hyperlink overrides XP custom settings: help!

Further to my post. I've since discovered that 'animated windows' only lasts until I switch off my pc. Next time I start it up, the custom settings have reverted to their original settings (i.e., with the animated windows option unchecked). In other words, the way the excel hyperlink overrides my custom settings in XP only lasts for the duration of the current session. Bizarre and pointless.

I'm using MS Word 2007 (cuz i'm old & cheap)

Here is what I'm trying to achieve. I have about 10 lines that I typed on a 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper. I want these lines to fit into a framing "mat" that has an opening of 9.5 in x 7 inches in the middle of this "mat" I thought it was simple too but it's not proving to be. Can anyone provide a short tutorial or page link that can help me out? Many Thanks in advance. Dave

I use this folder to keep icons on the desktop for our users. A few computers in one of the labs have this folder missing. Students probably got to messing around and deleted it.

Is there anyway to rebuild this folder to serve it's purpose or am I going to have to re-image the machine?

A:C:\documents and settings\all users is gone!

Hi Seth

You might first check to see if those pesky students changed the folder's properties to hidden - just as a prank [set the View in Windows Explorer to show hidden files temporarily].

That's the nice thing about having a backup image handy = they are great for computer labs at schools.

Best of luck

I am using windows Vista. I have a Documents and Settings folder and a Users Folder. They seem to be exact duplicates. The Users seems to be in use more than the Documents and Settings. I would like to delete one or the other but do not want to corrupt my system. Is it safe to delete one and if so, which?

Is this a result of running a registry optimizer?

I recently reinstalled Win Xp. I use Windows Explorer quite frequently. When I open the tree :My Computer
+ Local Disk(C)
+ Documents and Settings
+All Users
+Default User

How did I get Owner ? All the other times I've installed XP(many),the "Owner" has been my name that I give the computer.

A:Documents and Settings-users

Is it a recovery disk or an actual Install disk? Just create a new user and delete the Owner one.
