Preferred Solution: Windows 8 factory reset does not work

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, i'm new here.

So I have recently obtained an ASUS X45CP pre-installed with Windows 8

then I saw this thing at Microsoft website about windows 8.1 and I thought about upgrading

(which now I deeply regret)

After upgrading I found out that some of the device drivers are not fully supported yet (like the switchable graphics card)

So I thought of rolling back the laptop to factory settings and unfortunately windows 8.1 got that, too.

I've read various topics about that (mostly here), none of which I could follow to solve my problem.

Help?

I did not find install.wim but here is a screenshot where the boot.wim is, I believe it's an important part on this process

You're kind of hosed unless you created an 8 recovery flash/usb drive before upgrading. There is no ASUS program on your laptop for recovery? I have this on Acer:

Ok so i factory reset my wifes laptop which had windows 10 upgraded to it. After factory reset windows8 was then back as i expected. So after allowing all the updates for 8 to complete then restart my wifes computer was working great. So then i went to find and reinstall windows 10. All i could find was the paid upgrade. Contacted microsoft customer support and was told i couldnt find it because it was no longer free. But seeing as i had it on the computer during the free upgrade the tech had no problem sending me a link for the windows 10 update. So i followed his link. It updated and proceded to restart. Heres where the problem started. It now wont go past the dell logo screen the first screen on power up. I however can press f2 or f12 and get the menus for that. Microsoft told me i had to consult with dell. After talking with dell support they said the way that the microsoft update was done curropted a file and that i can either try a recovery disk which i dont have or pay them 130.00 to fix it. Sooooo my question is my wife has another identical laptop running windows 10. Can i hook the 2 laptops together via usb and boot off of my wifes computer to force start mine.

Hi,

So frustrated and baffled by what shouldn't be a big deal... after a week of searching online/trying things, I'm ready to pitch laptop out the window. :/ I'm hoping someone recognizes this situation and what might be necessary to fix it.  I'll try to make this as brief as possible.

This is an HP Envy 14, originally bought w W7. A month ago i accidentally "upgraded" to W10 and didn't revert back to W7 in the 30 day window.  So last week I was trying to get rid of W10, which I didn't like and had multiple issues.  Eventually I booted off the recovery discs I made when I got the laptop years ago, all 4 discs used, and it seemed to be installing fine.  Messages on laptop that it was setting computer up for first time use, etc.

Then when the "Starting Windows" message comes up w the W7 logo, it's followed by the Windows Recovery error message (Windows didn't shut down correctly last time; start in Safe Mode, etc) and is in a loop. Going into Safe Mode results in an error message that Windows can't complete installation in Safe Mode and to restart the computer.  This leads to the HP screen, which automatically starts up W7, which results in the error message.

This happened both when I ran Factory Reset and I think the other option was System Restore.

Also tried using a repair disc, which didn't fix the problem.

My son (who's helping me in this) thought maybe there was leftover stuff from W10 that was causing the... Read more

Hello,
After a faulty harddrive (one of a RAID 0 array), both of which were replaced by twice the capacity HDDs, I restored from a system image, having changed my RAID Assembly to RAID 1. However I had many problem with my setup, one of which was the complete inability to download anything, whatever browser I was using. I finally bit the bullet and did a factory reset. I used a system recovery disk I had created when I first bought my system, back in Aug 2010. I also decided to relocate my user and Program Data folders using audit mode. All seemed well until I tried to run Windows Update. (Windows 7). It would not run. giving me the error "Windows cannot run Windows update because the service is not running". I checked that both windows update and BITS were running, I renamed the Software Distribution folder and restarted Windows Update, all to no avail. I also ran a scannow which reported corrupt windows files.
How can I possibly be getting these errors after a complete Factory reset? Is it perhaps the fact that Dell Factory reset does not support audit mode to relocate User folders. I have also read that the Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers may be affecting Windows update. I have run a factory reset before back in Dec 2011 and everything was fine.
Can anybody help me please?

A:Corrupt windows files after Factory reset and window update won't work

Do the factory reset again but don't mess with the user and Program Data folders. Once that completes, try Windows Update.

If that doesn't fix the problem: Clean Install Windows 7

Follow the instruction in this note (in the tutorial):

I'd also suggest dumping the raid setup. Instead use the 2nd drive for backup.

Are you sure the computer booted off the DVD drive? Did you tap (keep tapping) the Escape key and choose your DVD drive to boot?

You can tap the F11 key while booting and get into System Recovery, there should be the option to restore to factory install using the recovery partition, without using the discs you made.

What kinds of problems are you having?

When my PC booted up the final time and i got to my login screen, none of my USB devices work, this includes my mouse and keyboard.

BUT, both my mouse and keyboard works fine in the BIOS, so i tried to install Win10 fresh from an USB stick. This didnt work.. when my computer boots past my BIOS, my keyboard and mouse stops working again... they just "blink" whenever i press a key. So i cant run any diagnostics and i cant install ANY drivers.

Ive read almost every forum post there is, but i cant find any solutions. Can anyone please help me? im losing my mind..

By using other method, after some time of doing something with a blue screen, the system finally show a message of error " Error at restoring the device" or something like that. Then, I move to the OneClick Reset alternative to do the factory reset of the system using the novo buttom, but any alternative does not work. After go to the 2% percent of the reset, the screen show a message of error. The last time that I tried the system factory reset achieved 16% after more than 10hours and then shows the error. Hi Alanddd,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Since the One Key Recovery partition exist in a separate hidden partition, this should not be affected by any software corruption. But if there is a probable hardware issue with the storage drive then it can affect the restoration process.

You may choose to use a bootable diagnostic tool. If there is a need to back up data then physically removing the drive and slaving it on a hard drive enclosure can be another option to also run separate hardware test at the same time.

Update us how it goes.

Hi there! First post, so apologies for posting too much or too little information, but here goes!

I'm on a Dell XPS 420 running Windows Vista. Using Internet Explorer for the time being.

Here's the problem..

I've downloaded Google Chrome, it appears to be installed (it's in my control panel, registry etc). However when I click on the program to run it (from anywhere), nothing happens at all.

When I go to install it, this happens - I go to the google chrome browser website, hit download, it downloads fine, the 'run box' appears all ok. Everything goes as expected up to the 'installing' phase - The installer box runs for about 4-5 seconds, then dissapears completely. However (as I said above) Google Chrome then appears in my shortcuts/start menu etc. as if it has been installed correctly.

the only problem is that it wont open.

Here's what I've done from the start step by step -

- Did a factory reset of my PC yesterday.
- Updated Graphics Drivers
- Tried to install Chrome, problem occured. Thought it might be because I hadn't installed Windows Important Updates yet. So I uninstalled Chrome.
- Installed Windows Important Updates.
- Tried Chrome again, didn't work, uninstalled again.
- Disabled my virus checker and firewall, and windows defender. Chrome Still didn't work. I then uninstalled them completely, still didn't work.
- Downloaded offline installer of Chrome (still official google version), didn&... Read more

Hello, I have an older (2007 ish) ASUS laptop that has Windows 7 installed.  It is rarely used so I'm not in the market for a new laptop, but it is running extremely slow.  Will not download updates, etc.  There is some sort of conflict.

I'd like to wipe the whole thing clean but here's my dilemma.  Windows Office is installed but I don't have the installation CD's.  If I do a factory reset, is there any bare-bones types of word available for download?

Really Word (and IE/Firefox) are all the laptop is used for, so I didn't know if there was some bare bones "light" version of Word out there.  Alternatively, is there anything I can download from the laptop now and reinstall after the refresh?

I just don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a new version of Office.

Thanks!

A:Windows 7 and Factory Reset

What version of Office are you running? There are no bare-bones versions of Word unless you are talking about free programs that can open Office Documents. There are number of those including Kingsoft, Open Office, and Softmaker's Free Office.

I have an HP ENVY 700 that has been having many issues over a long period of time. It most recently got so bad that it would not start. After calling HP support and purchasing a "Smart Friends" membership, they told me that there was most likely some corrupted files in my booting system that stopped it from rebooting. After almost a month of attempting to fix the issue, HP sent me 5 "System Recovery" discs to factory reset my entire hard drive. I was first unable to back-up any of my files that were on the computer (because, again, it won't start up to where I can remove them and also the recovery manager won't work either) and now, after many late nights and hours on call with HP, the recovery manager cannot even factory reset my computer. I make it through 4 full discs before reaching 70% progress on the 5th disc where I get an error message. It reads "Recovery Manager could not restore your computer using the factory image. Please contact HP support. Error code: 0xe0ef0003" (Those are all zeros by the way.) I have called the support, or "smart friends" back and they said that it was either an issue with the discs (which were completely new and barely out of the package) or a hardware problem unlike they had originally believed. I hope somebody here can point me in the right direction before I am forced to buy yet another membership for the separate tech support specifically for hardware. Thank you for your feedback!!!

A:Need to know how to do a factory reset in windows 7?

It's doable through tutorials on this site IF your PC has the capability. Some do, some don't.

But a few questions:

Have you made one or more "recovery" discs, by burning to a CD or DVD?

If you have not made recovery disks, your PC may or may not have a recovery partition that will allow you to restore to the state in which the PC left the factory.

Are you familiar with Windows Disk Management?

Does your PC have a sticker on it with a 25 character "Product Key"? If it does, you should be able to do a fresh install of Windows that you may prefer to a "factory reset", depending on your preferences. Many people don't like the configuration from the factory and would prefer a custom setup. Maybe you would. Maybe not.

I bought my Pavillion in 2014 and of course it came with Windows 8.1. I've upgraded it to windows 10 for about a year. I'm still a student and I want to use purley for school work. Problem is I have lots of junk on it like games that I no longer need. I thought of a lot of things to speed it up as it is painfully slow such as an SSD upgrade, but that is a bit pricey. The only thing I could think of is reset it so it doesn't have loads of rubbish running in the backround becuase the disk is always running at 100% usage (even at idle). So I was thinking, if i reset it to factory settings, will it keep windows 10 on it or will it degrade back to windows 8.1? Many thanks

Since I installed 8.1 from the store I have no disc to restore it from.

I saw some tutorials on activating 8.1 from 8 but I don't even know if I'm following the right ones or not. I'm not sure what I'm doing. This was much easier to do in Windows 7. But anyways, I would really appreciate any help on overcoming this so I can restore my computer.

Have you made the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Disks?

   Information

We always assume you have made your Recovery Disks using the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Media Creator app the first day you had your new PC.
& made the Startup Repair CD. (Windows 8 only)
Recovery Drive - Create with USB Flash Drive in Windows 8
System Repair Disc - Create in Windows 8 (Windows 8 only)

I would recommend you making the OEM manufacturer's Recovery DVD's or USB drive.
or
You can order the Microsoft official OEM Recovery disks from the OEM manufacturer's website.

Hi, There are many HP Touchsmart 310, it must be HP touchsmart 310-something such as         http://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c02622055 I don't think it has Windows 10 pre-installed and you may not be able to do factory restore because you need Admin password which you don't have. My suggestion: clear everything and install fresh Windows 10 1. Create Windows 10 installation media using the following instructions      https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10 2. Use the media to install Windows 10 to your machine, skip the step to enter the product key and continue, 3. Go online and Windows 10 will automatically activate using the key in the BIOS. Please note: you must install Windows 10 version/edition which is on the machine now, you can't change to other version/edition (ie can't change from Home to Pro for example. Regards.

Hi: If you previously had upgraded to W10 and it was successfully activated, you can go right back to W10 by using the Media creation tool at the link below and clean install W10. When you get to the window during the installation process where you are asked to input a product key, select the 'I don't have a product key' option, and W10 will install and autumatically reactivate once you are connected to the internet. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 If you want to go back to W8.1, you will have to use the W8.1 recovery media you should have made when you first got the PC.

Please see my first post under "will not update" to see where this all started

A brief history...I had serious 'infections' (see page 2, message number 27)
after many days of scans and fixes it was decided I should do a factory reset. (see page 9, message number 124)

I did the wrong type of backup, 10 discs, but only the first one was put back on after the reset.

Many more days of scans and errors. It was decided I should try again. This time I only backed up my files. they have not been reinstalled yet. Did have problems with the factory reset. (see page 13, message number 181 and message 195)

Still getting lots of errors... see the last two pages of previous post for the VEW scans

Figuring the problem could be that the reset process was interrupted. Thought I would try another factory reset but now when I try that 'files cannot be found' and I am instructed to insert recovery disc...which I do not have.

So, three questions.
Can the errors be fixed without doing another factory reset?
If not, can I make a recovery disc from my other windows 7 computer?
If I do that, will I be prompted to enter the code that proves it is a legit copy of Windows, since it comes from a different computer. I was not prompted to enter anything when I did the factory resets.

Also I have another question but I don't want to make another thread about it. In games such as cs go, why is my game freezing for no reason? About every 30 sec - 1 min, i freeze for about 5-10 seconds. Between the freezes, i get split second freezes. This is really annoying me. Anybody know how to fix? I am getting a constant 200 fps and 10 ping

A:How to factory reset without losing windows 10?

Hi, factory reset = have the PC restored to the state it was in when you bought it (as far as what's on the disk is concerned!).

If you bought it with Win 7, it will revert to Win 7, assuming you still have the relevant partition on your disk. Everything else on the disk will be lost. Repeat, everything.

You may wish to consider an in-place repair install which allows you to keep everything, and completely refreshes Windows.
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - Windows 10 Forums

Alternatively, you can clean install Win 10, and it will automatically register since you have it installed already. That will only affect the partition on which you have Win 10 installed, but you will lose all programs installed and all settings you have configured, and you will lose all personal data on that partition.

Hope that helps.

Hi, Windows 7 on my pavilion dv6 was not booting in normal mode. After trying system recovery and a range of other things, nothing worked. It would start in safe mode, so I copied all my files and did a reset to factory setting. Windows now still won't boot ie it gets stuck on the page with the windows symbol and sign. I have tried to start in safe mode and it says it can't. I'm really not sure what to do next. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have you tested the hard drive? Enter BIOS by tapping away at F10 immediately after powering on. Use Diagnostics to test hard drive.

A:G50-45 - Factory Reset OKR loads windows

Hi westie13 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Did the machine came with Win 7 /Windows 8 / Win 8.1 / Win10 originally?
You may check on the Windows sticker also.

You can attempt to do the OKR again by first turning off the system and remove the battery.
Press down the power button for 12 seconds twice to ensure the power is drained.
Press the novo button (item 9 page 69) to turn on and novo menu should offer system recovery.
One Key Recovery from initial back up would allow you to proceed.

Usually recovery disc are orderable from technical support if the OKR image is bad.
Alternatively a Windows installer image can be freely downloadable for windows 8.1 and Windows 10 for you to simply clean install the operating system and download and install the drivers from the support website.

Update us how it goes for you.

Regards

Hi Everyone, Teb here with my first post on the forum. I am hoping one of you have run into this problem and have a good solution. I downloaded files that I didn't want, and they have proven to be nothing but trouble. An example of one of the files is an extension call "PriceChop". To remove it I went to the control panel and uninstalled. Then I went into all of the web browsers on my computer, went into the settings, and removed the extensions. They appear to be removed until I restart my computer. I go back into Chrome, and the extension is still there. I decided to download a program called SpyHunter which is a malware remover. I ran the program about 8 times and it is still unable to find and remove the files. I searched and searched but have been unable to find a way to remove the unwanted extensions. It has gotten to the point where the virus removed my Norton anti virus security and is trying to log into windows by itself. My wife woke me up to tell me that my computer was "freaking out". Sure enough it was trying to log into windows. I would see a password being entered and then a log in attempt. I am at the point where I just wanted to factory reset. Well, jokes on me. I go into search and typed "reset". I choose to completely reset to factory settings. When it goes to start the process it tells me I have files missing and to insert media. I come to find out that after I upgraded to windows 8.1 via the windows store, I am now unable to factory reset. Something about ... Read more

A:Can't factory reset my windows 8 machine

If you could get your hands on a Windows 8.1 disk/USB then you can use that to boot into the advanced options and reset the PC. As most helpers and advisors on here would probably agree, resetting the PC should always be a last-ditch effort when all other options were exhausted. You could try visiting the malware removal forum: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/22/virus-trojan-spyware-and-malware-removal-logs/ and posting the logs requested to get help by a trained BC member.

The subject pretty much says it all. I have a Lenovo Yoga, and had to do a Factory Reset. Now I'm getting an error that it's not activated. I've gotten the key off the computer itself, and done the Microsoft Activation Center's thing, and couldn't get anywhere. This product is legit, it didn't go anywhere, so why am.i having so much difficulty??

Going to say right off that I have very little knowledge on computers, so I probably won't understand any complex solutions. Hopefully it won't have to come to that.

My mom factory reset her computer as a last resort after we couldn't fix the multitude of problems it had, but after the reset completed, Windows refused to install back onto the system. Originally we had been getting a message that Windows 7 was not compatible with her laptop (which is store bought Acer, not custom-built). However, prior to the reset we had been running Windows 7 just fine. This message, which included an error code, only showed up one time, and we haven't been able to get the error code since (unfortunately I never wrote it down).

Now when we try to start it, it says "setup is starting services." That operation fails, and we get a pop-up that says "Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation." Clicking OK just makes the same message pop-up again, and no matter how many times we restart the installation, we just return back to this.

The only solution I've seen suggested in my research of the problem is to try reinstalling Windows via the OS installation disc. However, to my knowledge we have never had a disc to do this with, so that isn't an option for us.

Are there other solutions? My mom's schooling depends on having a working computer, so we're understandably freaking out.

Thanks in advance.

A:Windows 7 Cannot Install After Factory Reset

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
I would first try to recover your files this is a little complicated but there's a good video available
Emergency Kit - save your files from a dead OS

Then after that I would just go ahead and prepare for the worst case and buy win-7 again from either Newegg or Amazon
If you know which bit 32 or 64 and 7 Home Premium or 7 Pro you had before ?
If not post the SNID and brand computer and we might be able to look it up on the manufactures website for you,
The SNID is a tag on usually the bottom of a laptop and or on the side of a desktop that also has the windows activation key on it = We do not need the Key just the SNID # it will tell everything about the machine you bought.

A:Restore my windows 7 to its factory reset

Hi

Please take a look at the bottom of your laptop and check whether there is a COA sticker like the below one.

If yes, you can use the key printed on that sticker to perform a clean installation. Please refer the detailed guide written by "gregrocker" for more info.

Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

The guide covers everything you need to know and includes download links for legal versions of Windows 7. Make sure to download the exact edition of Windows 7 image which will be printed on the sticker ( ie Pro means Professional ). After performing the clean install, use phone based activation as online activation is not supported for OEM installations.

Upgraded to Windows 10, 8 months ago but did not know my Pavilion dv6 did not have Windows 10 drivers to support it.  Now I have problems with Windows update.  Solution is to go back to Windows 7 but not really sure how.First I would backup all personal files (non-applications).-  Would I lose my applications that came with my laptop from HP such as MS Office if I did a factory reset?    - If yes, would HP give me the key to get MS Office reinstalled if my PC is not in warranty anylonger? Or do I have to purchase it again? If I press ESC during startup, will it allow me to go back to Windows 7 There is a D: Recovery drive on the PC and E: HP Tools drive.; what are these used for? Also, I have 3 Discs that were created for me by Geek Squad after i got my laptop in 2010, labeled HP Recovery Disc.  Would I use them to go back to Windows 7 and would they have MS Office on them?

So I recently did a factory reset on my windows 8 computer due to my computers performance anyways after the reset was done my computer was very slow. Every time I would try to open my browser it would open up like literally 1-2 minutes later, even when I open my charms bar it would lag then open it. I did a full virus scan, optimization, clean, SFC SCANNOW in CMD, cleaned my temp, installed all the boatware... I don't know if this is a virus or just a simple error. Any help will be appreciated!

I'm beginning to reach the end of the road with my laptop, and I'd rather get it working than get a new one, but I'm a tad bit of a noob, so please explain things clearly, thanks.

Upon my intense dissatisfaction with windows 10, I decided to switch to linux, and I therefore created another partition on my hard drive and installed linux on it. Things were fine for a while, I was using linux fulltime, and despite windows 10 still being on my laptop, I never booted into it. This remained the case for around 2-3 weeks, before I decided to switch back to Windows 10.

However, upon attempting to boot into windows 10, the bootscreen came up, but it just stayed there forever, without booting, so I held the power button to get out of it.

I therefore used a system recovery disk that I made a few months ago when windows 10 was still working to get into the recovery options (I can't access them from the OS itself because I can't get into the OS in the first place.)

I went into Troubleshoot and attempted a full system reset, which I hoped would also remove Linux and in general fix all of the problems. However, the reset failed, and I had no clue why it had done so, and so I attempted a startup repair. It searched for faults and before long was displaying the message "Repairing disk errors. This might take over an hour to complete." with the Toshiba logo above it (brand of my laptop). This made me suspect that there may be some kind of hard drive fault. It was running for a fe... I have an msi laptop with windows 7. I have been experiencing some issues with it. Last night I tried to do a factory reset. The one where you press F3 during startup. Everything seemed like it was going great. The progress bar was moving along. It got all the way to the end and nothing happened. I left it alone overnight hoping it was just slow. This morning it's still displaying the progress bar and the elapsed time is still ticking away. Nothing has changed. I don't know what to do! To add to my sense of panic, there is a note on the top of the screen clearly stating to not touch any key while the reset is happening. Clearly the computer is trying to mess with my mind on purpose.

A:Windows 7 factory reset is stuck

A factory reset should never take more than a couple of hours if that. Obviously something is wrong. If you were having issues before the reset the failure could be due to a hardware issue such as a failing hard drive. You will need to stop the reset.

Do you have access to another computer? If  you do then download UBCD and burn the iso to a CD on a Windows 7 or later computer by right clicking the iso file and selecting Burn Disk Image. Boot UBCD and at the menu screen select HDD > Diagnosis. Scroll down to Seatools for Dos and do the short/long tests. If Seatools for DOS does not detect your drive then at the UBCD menu screen select Parted Magic. At the Parted Magic desktop select Disk Health. It could be called GsmartControl. Run the short and long tests. If they pass boot UBCD again and use Memtest86+ to run a memory test. Let it run for at least 6 passes and preferably overnight.

I own a low-budget gaming laptop and recently I did a factory reset. Ever since then, this game I play has been lagging (brief screen freezes). The lag only happens when I press a button specifically when I use skills, or whenever a message shows up in the in-game system message box. Holding down a skill button makes the game stutter pretty badly, but the game runs smoothly when I'm not pressing anything. I've tried to install nothing but the game after another factory reset but the lag was still there. The weird thing is that I do not see this issue in any of the other games that I play. What might be causing this? Any thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you!
