Hi guys,

About two months ago I bought an Acer TimelineX laptop (the 11.6" version with the i7 core.) Last night it started havong some vicious problems. It will instantly shut down or freeze with the current displayed graphics being very distorted, seemingly at random intervals. I suspect a hardware problem because a few minutes before all this started I noticed the cover protecting the internal components was out of place, so I snapped it back into position.

I tried running some of the pre-boot Windows diagnostics, but they came up clean. The system crashed once during this process and gave me a blue screen of death that said "PFN_LIST_CORRUPT". I ran a diagnostic on the memory and it came up clean as well. I'm thinking I might have broken some critically important piece of hardware. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks!

-Kai

A:Problem with Acer TimelineX turning off/freezing, suspect a hardware problem

A few silly ideas that i've tried with my Acer ..
try taking the battery out !..
just run it off the lead..
I've been told its something to do with a hardware issue with the standby mode of the fan or the CPU or some standby/neutral position that some gizmo inside does (have you guessed that I'm no techie ;o)
Try it out, it could be a simple (if not permanent) fix.
Good luck

Good afternoon Tech Immortals,

I am working on a friend's computer.
The hardware setup is the following:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ 2.1GHz

2.5 GB RAM CRUCIAL (Memtest says the following about it: DDR2(64 bit)
373MHz DDR746 CAS: 5-5-15

Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT pci-e

MSI K9N6PGM2-V motherboard

The problems:

Problem1. When the computer is turned on it gives out 2 short beeps (memory error, I presume according to an Internet search). Then it loads GRUMP for Ubuntu 9 or Win XP pro
Problem2. Anything that is graphics intensive makes the computer crash or graphics get glitchy. For example videogames will either make windows crash or crash the game and exit to windows. On Ubuntu while running Compiz the OS freezes. It only crashes or glitches with graphic intensive software.

Solution tried:
For problem1. While loading GRUMP there is an option for memtest. Diagnostics came out fine, no errors.

More background information:
I've inspected the motherboard, the graphics card, ram, everything (looking at it physically for any burns or liquid spills etc)
Everything is roughly 4 months old, bought brand new when purchased.
In the past the user had the same setup except that his old graphics card (GeForce BFG TECH 8800 GT) died on him (will get further details about that in about an hour).
Replaced for graphics card mentioned above. Those problems are occurring.
The card gets warm, but not to an alarming point (I want to say around 60 degrees celcius).... Read more

Hi, I'm in need of figuring out if my laptop was infected by a trojan, the operating system went kapoot and i need to reinstall it, or if its hardware failure. I used it last night and my AVG caught a "small trojan horse" called cryptbase.dll and after removing it i believe is where it began. My computer restarted and ended up starting up with the acer splash with me able to click f2 for setup. But f8 doesn't work and causes a long beeping noise if i leave it alone it goes to a black screen with a underscore blinking at the top left. i've done some research but, im unsure which route to take without taking some advice for my own laptop. My laptop is a Acer Aspire 5741-3541, Windows 7,intel core i5-450 processor, 4 GB DDR memory, 500 GB HDD. if you need more information please ask because im unsure with what is needed to fix the problem. The solutions i've heard is reinstalling windows 7, or it might be a HDD problem. Thank you.

Hi, I'm new here (meaning I just made an account but have been lurking around every time I had computer trouble. This time however, I couldn't find anything that resembles the trouble I'm currently experiencing) and I'm hoping if anyone can help me or tell me if I should just throw my laptop against the wall.

I've had my printer (details and TSG SysInfo below) for over a year now, and never had any trouble with it. A few days ago, I needed to print something but wasn't able to (I can't remember what the error said, it didn't happen again) so I uninstalled the printer and re-installed it by downloading the drivers from the HP website. Pop-up balloon said that it wasn't successfully installed and when I would try to install the driver by going to print management and click on Printers I would get: "An error has occurred on the script of this page. Line: 40. Char: 21. Error: Object doesn't support property or method 'SetPrinterName'. Code: 0. URL: res://C:\Windows\system32\pmcsnap.dll/81". So I clicked on Drivers instead and tried to install the driver there and it said: windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error.

Do understand that I have no idea what I'm doing whenever my computer doesn't behave as it is supposed to, and everything is done by trial and error; mostly error. For some reason I felt the need to do a chkdsk /f /r which was scheduled on the next restart, b... Read more

Yesterday, I came home from work to see that my computer had done a reset on its own. When I turned it on, I found the Win 10 Anniversary update waiting for me. Since then, I have had several crashes with games, and even blue screens.

The BSOD's go by so fast, that I had to turn off the automatic restart just to read the error as STOP CODE: MEMORY MANAGEMENT. Apparently, this means that there is a problem pertaining with my RAM.

A few months ago, I came on here with a similar problem after my PSU blew and I had to get anothr one. I solved that by buying 2 new RAM cards to replace the ones inside. I ran a memory diagnostic which showed no problems, and right now I'm running a system file check scanner as well. If both of these come back fine and there are still problems, I may have to get new RAM sticks.

I have a 2 year warranty on them, so replacing them again would be no problem. However, before I do that, I was wondering if the problem might be my motherboard or CPU as they are the only components still used from the computer from when the Power Supply blew? These would be my 3rd set of damaged RAM cards in a year, and that just strikes me as weird, especially since they are designed to withstand overclocking conditions.

A:Unknown hardware problem (possible software problem)

As the computer shut dow/reset for some unknown reason, I'd suspect that unknown event to be related.

Could be power related (ie: power surge or dirty power), power supply (if you are using a non-Tier one model, or possibly the motherboard.

Bottom line, some event occurred which caused this issue and it likely isn't related to previous issues.

I've got serious problem with my Radeon 9600PRO:

I installed Win XP SP2 on my new PC, Windows detected a new VGA device, it tried to install default drivers but it couldnt find it, (although WinXP CD was in a drive, and internet connection was working)

I installed DirectX9 and then launched the latest Catalyst Setup downloaded from ati.com, and installed drivers. After that, my card was noticeable as HIS Radeon 9600 series properly for Device Manager.
However, it didn't work well - in CCC there is 3d a graphic test - with 3d preview - a car driving on the road - and on my display it wasn't looking good, image was blurred or sth, also the icq icons were blurred (flowers and smiles) - while after uninstalling ATI drivers, when card is seen as a default VGA device (default frequency of monitor, default resolution) icq icons are looking well...

With Catalyst Control Centre installed, after reboting my display goes blank, and the only solution is reboting in safe mode, unistalling ATI drivers, and installing them once again, then it works but until the next rebot in normal mode...

Anyone knows what' the problem is? Rahter software or hardware?
Mayby Radeon 9600Pro cann't work properly with Athlon 64?
Maybe I should change something in BIOS?

Athlon 64 3200+

The short version of my problem is that at some point after a reboot, certain web pages fail to load.  I'm not sure what the root cause is, at all.  I am running Windows 7 SP1 and was up to date with updates when this started.

When it started happening:
Thursday night, the power flickered at my apartment and made my computer reboot.  I figured it was a good a time as any to install Windows updates since I hadn't done that in a while.  After doing so was when I first noticed the problem.

The problem:
What happens is after I reboot, at first, everything works fine.  At some time after, some web sites just don't load.  The sites that don't load are consistent (if I reboot and wait, all the same ones fail).  A couple examples are bleepingcomputer.com itself and any of Valve's (the game developer) sites.  It doesn't seem that computer help/anti-malware sites are all not working, since MBAM and AVG's sites work.  Google itself always works and when Googling for info on this problem, I seem to find more sites that don't work than do, once it starts happening.

I don't know specifically at what point stuff stops loading.  I tried rebooting then going to read a book for an hour, and it was working when I tried immediately after.  If I reboot and open Firefox with a ton of tabs and start browsing around, it might stop within a few minutes.

What I tried:
At first I thought it was my Internet connection or ... Read more

Hi all, I was hoping someone could help me out. I've been having a reoccurring issue with my laptop. The basic issue is that it runs very, very slow - using about 80%-100% of the CPU when a program is open and 30%-50% of the CPU when no programs are open. If I try to restart the computer, it will hang on a black screen between the "Starting Windows" screen and the "Welcome" screen.

The first few times it occurred (July, October, and mid-November) a System Restore from Safe Mode solved the issue. The fourth and fifth times it happened (late November and early December) I had to try restoring to multiple different restore points before it would work again. The sixth time (mid-December) no amount of System Restores did anything. I ended up running the "sfc scannow" command and that seemed to solve it. The seventh time (late December) neither System Restore nor "sfc scannow" did anything. I ended up reformatting and doing a clean install of Windows. That solved the problem for about a week, then last night it started happening again.

I'm a little lost at this point. I've run tests on both the memory and hard drive and they came out fine. I looked through the event logs each time the issue occurred and didn't see anything that seemed likely to cause this. The fact that it keeps reoccurring, even after a clean install, makes me think it's some kind of hardware issue. But the fact that the computer works completely fine... Read more

So yesterday I try and boot up the computer, but it makes a beeping noise (one) and the monitor fails to be recognized. I decide to move my ram (2 sticks) to the Dimm 2 and Dimm 3 spots instead of where they used to be, Dimm 1 and Dimm 2, I boot up, and the monitor is recognized again. However, I get windows wasn't shut down properly message, I go with normal startup, and it freezes during the windows loading bar. I restart, choose safe mode, restart once in safe mode, and I am able to get it working. Next I noticed that my sound wasn't working, check my device manager and see that the Creative game Port and main Audigy driver's aren't installed properly now. So I reinstall the audigy drivers, which worked, and then try the game port but it won't install. After trying many times I look around to the net to see what the problem could be, and decide to look in the BIOS. I see that onboard game port is disabled so I enable it, try to install the driver but it still won't work, so I went back into BIOS and disabled it again to be safe. Frusterated and getting late I went to bed. This morning I try and boot up again and it freezes during the loading screen again. After going to safe mode and restarting a few times over it finally works. Now my question is, is my sound card defective and could that be causing XP to freeze? And What did switching my ram slots have to do with all this?

I currently have my Benq monitor set to the default resolution of 1280x1024 but have changed the DPI to 120% for better viewing. Since I did that all the excel worksheets I had been working on for the past year don't appear correctly as I had meticulously set them up & saved them with the monitor set on 125% DPI . I can revert back to 120% but I want to save the files to disc for my family and want them to be able to view them in the same way I had set them up. I have tried many monitors of various sizes on my PC but with the same result. So it doesn't seem to be a monitor problem ? I thought that changing the monitors DPI would only make items appear larger or smaller not affect saved worksheet files.
There is no other setting I can find to alleviate this problem so wondering if it is a hardware problem ? Hope someone can offer some suggestions

A few weeks back I was here, at the video card forums asking for some hardware upgrade advice. The threads are these where all my system specs are already available: Once again...PSU and Graphics combo
and What Video Card?

My problem is this- After installing the PSU, the GPU and the RAM i plugged my computer and turned it on. Everything loaded up as usual, and I went on ahead to check the RAM, the system recognize it properly, all is good! Now, I moved on to the Graphics Card. I take out the cd, put it in and start the installation. When I click for it to begin, after a while an error with a bunch of weird numbers appeared and I couldn't proceed with the installation. After a few failed attempts to install, I figured the only problem seem to be with my computer not wanting to accept the graphics card's installation so I decided to take the card out and start it again. It loads, but it's MUCH more slower in start-up and after everything loads... BAM! The computer sort of freezes/ crashes and I can't do anything. I tried restarting a few times but a few minutes after the painfully slow start-up, it still happens.

I don't think the problem is with the PSU, everything turns on correctly. Im sure it ain't with the RAM either since the computer recognizes it and shows it. The problem is with the GPU which I already took out but it seems that it might have done some damage...and I have no idea why.

Does anybody have a clue as to what's wrong or what can I do?

A:New hardware, problem with XP

I would start with the GPU drivers, which are the source of most problems. Chances are, there are newer drivers on the manufacturer's website than on the CD. Uninstall any of the drivers you installed off the cd, then download the latest video drivers and give it a go.

Okay, so I was just browsing through the web when this black windows box kept popping up nonstop. I got really annoyed and decided to restart my computer, but when it restarted, I noticed it didn't restart properly because I saw this popup called Windows Recovery saying that my hardware has a lot of problems and that most cannot be fixed. Then my icons and programs started to disappear from my computer and alerts popping up saying something about my computer cannot scan or detect a hardware. On my desktop, all my icons are gone as if nothing existed on my computer. All my programs and everything essential to maintain my computer just disappear. Is this a bad virus or did my hardware just crashed? Really in need of help. I don't want to pay a lot to get it fix unless I really have to.

so recently my computer crashed and didn't turn on, so i changed the psu,
next thing i know i have a problem with my explorer which was unresolved so i decide to reformat, well i haven't yet but~

im sending data to another computer so i can send it back after i reformat....then all of a sudden the screen turns black. The computer is still on but the music i have shuts off and my keys are unresponsive, such as if i press caps lock, the light on the keyboard for caps lock will not go on

this happens at random times after i boot the computer, 5-20 minutes after the boot up...i'm convinced it's a hardware related issue

i don't think it's my psu, it's brand new...the one i had beforehand was only 2 months old anyway and i'm thinking it burned out cause what happened with the previous psu was at any time, the computer would restart or shut down, if it shut down i would have to wait 5-10 minutes to reboot it because if i tried to boot it too soon, the machine would turn on but nothing would come up
this applies to now too, when the screen turns black i have to hold the power button, then wait 5-10 minutes before starting back up again...
if it was my video card, i would still be able to do things with my keyboard, just not see it right? but the whole computer is unresponsive.......help? OH oh and my system is clean of any viruses or whatever, i just need to fix it to get enough time to send the rest of my data to the other computer... Read more

Ok... The computer was fine last night, and i turned it on this morning, it worked fine for 10 mins, then it keep restart by itself every 5 second...

First thing came to my mind was the CPU may be overheated, i check the Temp. in the BIOS, the temp is fine, around 78. then i unplunged the hard drive, dvd rom, all the addiction chips, the computer still doing the same thing... i have tried on two different Ram, so i am for sure the Ram is working fine.

My question is what is wrong with my computer??? do you think something wrong with motherboard?? that is the only thing left...

Thanks in advance.

I use a 60GB HDD Video Jukebox mpm-202, what I use to backup. before formatting and re-installing this pc I put my files on this device, to put them back later, now, I also used this device with the Mac OS 10.2.8, and this should be no problem, because this device, and driver work on both mac and windows. but now, in every directory on my device in which I have put a file in, there appears a unknown file called: .DS_Store .And now, when I connect the device to my re-installed pc, the pc doesn't recognize this device, after I have installed the correct driver.
What do I do to fix this? is it an XP problem, or a hardware problem?

I've been looking thru the posts in this forum and see that a lot of us have PC problems caused by hardware errors. No two seem to be exactly the same. I've been having some problems that started about 6 to 8 weeks ago and was hoping I can get some assistance. It started with my PC rebooting and then running CHKDSK automatically when it came back up. I would usually get an error message stating that Windows has recovered from a serious error, but didn't list anything specific. Once I did get to my desktop I would get a similar message and then it asked me if I wanted to send an error report to Microsoft.

After a few weeks of this, then my PC would just lock up. Couldn't use my mouse or keyboard. I would have to power off my CPU and reboot. But I received no error messages at all. The lock-up seemed to occur most often when the system was idle. Also, a few times when I was away from my PC for a while, when I came back my LCD would be in power saving mode, but I couldn't get it to display anything. I'm suspecting my PC locked-up again.

My latest problem is the BSOD, but this time it says my system is recovering from a hardware error, says it must shutdown to prevent any damage and runs CHKDSK again. When I get to my desktop I get the message asking if I want to send an error report to Microsoft. When I click on the button to display the error report, it took me here: http://wer.microsoft.com/responses/....2.0?SGD=901c364a-9ec6-43dd-833b-c2429628... Read more

A:Hardware Problem?

You mentioned that you got the BSOD by any chance did you get that Technical Information. If so what is it also did it provide a error if so what is it.

Now there are some BSOD that that information is pretty useless however there are some that are rather useful. For example the 0x000000ED Unmountable Boot Volume usualy has 2 solutions Replace the Hard Drive or repair the system using various methods and or reinstall the OS.
Also you mentioned that you got a chkdsk screen come up when starting the computer. This usualy indicates a failing Hard Drive. There is a amount of failing in a hard drive that is considered acceptable. If you are not getting a persistent Blue screen then you could probably excape a Hard drive replacement and just do a chkdsk in the recovery console.

Did your hard drive or computer come with any diagnostics if so run them.

I apologize for my long post in advance. I also apologize I had a post regarding this in the Digital Photography section of the forums and only had one reply which didn't answer my question and it is more a hardware question anyway. I have a Kodak EasyShare DX6340 digital camera. Along with the camera I have the Kodak EasyShare software installed on my computer and I also have the EasyShare camera dock 6000. The camera dock was supposed to make the transfer process easier and faster which in my case does neither. I also was getting an error when trying to transfer from the camera while in the dock to the PC using the Easyshare software that said Device Information Could Not Be Found. So I decided to take the dock out of the equation and hook the camera directly via USB. Now when I connected the camera the first time I got Windows Has Detected New Hardware box than went on to a box that said Windows Detected Kodak DX6340. So it seems that Windows 2000 SP4 recognized and installed the camera. Now when I go into the Easyware software to transfer pictures I get the same Device Information Could Be Found. In both using the dock and USB I am still able to put the pictures onto the PC, I just took the dock out cause it has more problems than it's worth. The problem I have is that the Easyshare software is very lethargic and clunky, for lack of better words and I want to get rid of it. I have Nero Ultra 7 installed on my computer that offers better tools for editing picture... Read more

A couple of days after installing Microsoft Visual Studio 2010, my computer has started to freeze. Before that, I had installed Visual C++ Express 2010 and then uninstalled it when I got Visual Studio 2010 Professional. I also had Visual C++ Express 2008 installed.

I know I was stupid to not uninstall everything when installing Visual Studio 2010 Pro... But I'm not sure if the freezing problem is caused by incompatibility issues or even software!

I am in safe mode at the moment, it doesn't freeze while in safe mode. But if I start up regular, it freezes within minutes (or even seconds) and requires a manual shutdown in order to make it operate again. I have also noticed that when it freezes while running Vista out of safe mode that a clicking noise comes from my computer, I don't know what component though...

I'm starting to think it's a hardware problem, I am going to run a hardware diagnostic scan thingy.

If it doesn't freeze in Safe Mode, but it does freeze in normal mode - then it's most likely a driver/program issue. Since it freezes almost immediately, then it's most likely that it's something that loads on startup.

My original problem was that, one day I came back to my comp from sleep and it had shut itself down. I restarted, and after maybe 10 seconds, mouse and keyboard both would freeze. Same thing in safe mode, VGA and all of the options on F8. Took it to a tech and he reinstalled Windows XP using some disc he had and not the Acer eRecovery. After that it worked in safe mode but still froze on normal bootup. The mouse would skip around, then freeze altogether, and the keyboard wouldn't work. Took it back to the tech, who told me he couldn't get it to freeze.

When I got it home it worked, but it appeared to have some crappy resolution set on it, and I thought he may have ust put it on some basic resolution to "fix" the problem hoping I wouldn't notice. I got the driver, downloaded it, and it began to freeze up again. Therefore I did a reformat through eRecovery, and it loaded up to the screen that's all "Hey dude you got a new computer, let's set it up" and the MOUSE AND KEYBOARD FROZE AGAIN. You have to hold in the power button to reset it. Won't load at all in safe mode and tells me to "run setup again." I ran the reformat several times with the same result.

My specs are below, the only difference is that I have twice as much RAM as what's listed because we upgraded it. Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

A:Could this be a hardware problem?

First thing that jumped out at me was the fact that you upgraded ram. Does this by chance coincide with when the problems started? Take out the new ram for a while and see if that fixes the problem. It may be incompatible (or faulty) ram that is giving you the headaches.

Also, if you are able to boot your computer up, right click on ?my computer?, ?manage?, ?event viewer? (assuming you are running XP). Here you will find 3 categories and a list of each. Your system reports any errors it encounters here. You want to search in all three categories and look for any details with a red symbol by them. Yellow are also significant, but red ones are the ones to research first.

To research them, the best way is to look inside the details provided. There is a link in there that tells you to ?click for more details?. Do it. It?ll take you to the Microsoft site with some possible causes and solutions.

If the crashes seem related to a particular piece of hardware in your system, that is your hint. Update the drivers for that hardware and see if that fixes you up. For example, if you are getting constant error reports for your internet connection, try updating your NIC (network interface card) drivers.

My son has a Sony Vaio laptop that he is continually downloading music and video onto. He has up to date McAfee running on it, but apparently some critter got through. He says he scanned when he noticed problems and the scan did turn up something that was unremovable by McAfee. He did NOT note the name of the virus. By the time he reported the problem to me the computer will not boot at all. I get "Operating System not found" on a black screen with nothing else. When I attempt to boot with the XP OS disc in it, I get the blue install/repair screen, but upon trying each of those options I once again get a black screen telling me that no hard drive is detected. How big of trouble am I in?

I'm not sure how much info is needed so I'll just post everything I know offhand.

I built this system as a gaming rig a little over 2 years ago. Spec's are

Xeon E3110 3.0ghz 1.18v (OC's for the last 2 years at 3.6ghz @ 1.24v)
EVGA 780i Motherboard
EVGA 8800gtx
4gb (2x2g) Corsair XMS2 RAM
SB Audigy soundcard
Raptor 10,000rpm 150gb HD
WD 200gb HD
Vista 64 Home Premium

Really haven't had any problems with it since I built it, the only problem (corrupted video) was fixed with a bios update shortly after it was up and running.

A few days ago I was browsing with firefox when the whole computer suddenly froze. I restarted and after a while it froze again (while in control panel). It froze a couple more times so the first thing I did was run a memory diagnostic (off the Vista CD) to make sure the RAM hadn't gone bad. It came back with no errors. Next I ran a full virus scan with AVG and it found a few Java Trojan's to my surprise, I cleaned them out and it seemed to have fixed the problem - it ran for about ~12 hours with no problem. The following day I was playing a game when it froze again, only this time I could not boot the system. I tried repairing the boot up and finally tried to go to a restore point - both ended up freezing. I wasn't sure if it was software or a hardware failure, but I suspected my main HD (a previous Raptor had died after 2 years on my previous PC). So I switched in the 7200rpm as my main and the Raptor as the secondary and reins... Read more

Hello all, PC crisis mode.

I have a machine one of them "pick-all-the-parts-and-they-put-it-together" type places (American Computech). I installed XP Pro on it, and it's worked like a charm for about 8 months.

Recently my machine has stopped booting entirely. At first, it would get to the BIOS screen and then reboot itself. Once in every 5 tries or so you would make it to the Windows login screen and be able to log in. At this point, however, it stops just after the BIOS screen. There's a message at the top (with a blinking cursor after) that says "Error loading operating system". It's still a black screen with white text.

I'm not quite sure where to go with this. Do I just try to reinstall the OS from scratch? Or is this possibly a hardware issue?

Second question - the fan I got with my PC is REALLY loud. I presume a better fan would be quieter. But, not being terribly technical, how do I figure out which fan is the loud one? Hard disk fan? Case fan? I don't even know if I have multiple fans in there. The only one listed on the invoice is "ECS Socket A Cooling Fan". I'm not sure how to tell.

Thanks!

Steve

now is my problem,
everytime i place my video card, my computer doesnt want to start up, it doesnt even gets past the BIOS mode..
the strange thing is: when i remove it, and change a setting in the bios (becauze able to get into there when removed card) and i place the card back, it starts,

but when i get into my windows desktop screen, and i go to device management

it seems not to recoqnize my video card... it only show's me a card called: Microsoft Basic Display-adapter,
when i press to search for the newest software it says that are no new updates...

when i enter my bios with the settings changed so my card can stay in the motherboard, i get a overview of my motherboard and it DOES say that my nvidia card is installed on the motherboard (placed ).
but when i go to windows, it seems to dissapere....

when i change the settings in the bios to standard, and then try to run my computer with the card installed in my motherboard,

can anyone help me please?.... been stuck with this for 3 days now, and no one knows an answer...

Once you get the GPU installed and your system recognizes it, you have to download the driver from Nvida or off the DVD that came with the GPU.

It might be a bad RAM stick, or it could be that a component is getting too hot, like the CPU. Is this a laptop or desktop? Are you able to see what the temps are? You might try running Speedfan or Hardware Monitor to see the temps, and to make sure that the fans are all running.

If it's a laptop, the air vents might be clogged with dirt, fuzz, cat hair...
