XPS13 9343 Black Screen

Q: XPS13 9343 Black Screen

Hi All,
My XPS13 Laptop (9343) recently stopped displaying on the in-built screen. I tried:
-Updating the bios
-Reinstalling Drivers
-Doing the PWR+D test (it displayed fine)
-Re-installing windows 10

It seems like this is a common problem?

Preferred Solution: XPS13 9343 Black Screen

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: XPS13 9343 Black Screen

I closed the screen on my laptop last night, opened it back up this morning and it wouldn't work. The only way I can use the laptop now is with an external monitor plugged in. When I try to clone or display directly to the in-built display, it doesn't work.
I've tried:
-Installing the latest drivers from the website
-Using the Pwr+D test, in which the built-in display displays all colors perfectly.
I have the A07 Bios installed. I tried booting to the bios, but it won't display on the external monitor, so I can't see what is going on...
Any help would be appreciated.

Looks like fairly common problem with XPS13? Screen starts flickering and eventually goes totally black and never starts working again.
I already had motherboard replaced once in January, now waiting 2+ weeks for motherboard+screen replacement.
Any chances Dell resolves this issue or will I keep getting parts replaced until I run out of warranty?

I have a user with an XPS13 9343, about 1.5 years old.  Windows 10 x64. This morning her battery state when plugged in is "94% not charging". A different charger produces the same result.  Restarting or shutdown-start has no effect. Diagnostics show no problems, but do show that it knows it's plugged in but the charger is idle (see ).

I've replaced batteries in XPS13's before, but is there some way I can test to see if the battery is the problem or the charging circuit is the problem?

A:XPS13 9343 not charging

You run "Thorough Test Mode" on the battery in Preboot Diagnostics? If no, then I suggest you click on battery and then click Thorough Test Mode. By the way, thanks for the images in the file.

After not having used the laptop for a few months, I powered it on and was applying updates (some pre-1709 cumulative Windows updates).
Suddenly, the laptop shut down.  I came to notice that the LED on the power supply was dead.  Pressing the battery status light on the latptop gave no battery level (no lights).  I figured the power supply had died and ordered up a new one.
The new power adapter arrived, and the LED works.  However, when I plut it in the LED turns off.  It's not until I cycle the power to the adapter (while disconnected from the computer) that the LED returns.  Plugging it into the computer again causes it to turn off.
I'm not sure if I got a dud for the new power adapter, or if something is wrong with the computer.  I don't want to sink another $40 into a second new adapter.
How do these latptops behave when the battery is dead?  Are they still usable when plugged in?
Any suggestions?

A:XPS13 (2015) P54G/9343: Will not power up

There's a short circuit somewhere in the system.
Unplug the system, disconnect the battery and hold the power button for 30 sec.  Re-connect the AC adapter (but not the battery) and see if the system will power up.  If it will, reconnect the battery and try again.  If it then fails, the battery is bad.  Replace with a new one.
If you can't get the system to power up on AC only, next suspect is the DC jack - replace this part:
If that fails to get the system going, the mainboard is bad.

For about three months now I have been tolerating a slow but steady creep of blurred screen display from the lower horizontal edge of the touch screen up towards the top. It started about 1.5mm now it is 3mm all the way across the bottom of the screen. I've been secretly (naively) hoping this would go away with a bios update. Today's update has not fixed it.
A laptop display repair guy told me it is a hardware failure. Expensive to replace.
Is it fixable? I have no warranty. I bought this machine Dec 2015. Such a short life span for such an expensive laptop.
I hope no one else gets this after all the other troubles seen with this model. I placed a diagnostic query thingy already.

So just received a new dell u2715 monitor. When I connect it to my xps13 laptop using the supplied Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable no image is displayed on the monitor. Opening the dell monitor managements utility on laptop l get error msg, no dell monitors are attached. I assume the supplied Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable can be used to attach Mini DisplayPort end to laptop and the DisplayPort end to the monitor??
Anyhow l can't get it to work.
However if l use my own Mini DisplayPort to hdmi adaptor, and plug Mini DisplayPort end into laptop and hdmi end of cable to on back of monitor, it displays ok.
Any help must appreciated.

My laptop has been shutting off randomly. This has happened before but more frequebtly lately (2 weeks ago for about 2 days or about 8 tries, then problem went away). Now its happening again, sometimes on playing a video, sometimes just surfing the web. When it shuts down, it gives a fearful beep code and light code. Please see video in link.
I haven't been able to turn on the laptop recently as it just shuts down before the windows load. Also I cannot complete the diagnosis without shut down. I tried contacting dell but response is slow.
Does anyone experience this or know what is wrong?

I recently upgraded from Windows 8.1 to 10 with my XPS 13 (9343) laptop. Before the upgrade, I had no problem with any of the following devices with Windows 8.1. After the upgrade, I started experiencing the following issues:
1) Wifi: After restart or waking from sleep, I had to reconnect to my home network.Automatic reconnection was enabled and network adaptor's power management was modified but reconnection did not work well.
2) I had serious problems with my Bluetooth, especially with BT headphones. Once paired, it seemed to be working. However, after disconnecting and reconnecting, the headphones got connected but I did not hear any sound. Later, the headphones did not get connected but kept going to pairing mode but the Bluetooth setting showed that they are already paired. I am using a Bluetooth mouse. Interestingly, if I turn off the Bluetooth (from setting) and turn it on again, my Bluetooth mouse never get connected again.
Temporary solution: I installed network driver (9343_Network_Driver_74HW9_WN32_6.30.223.262.A01.exe) for Windows 8.1. This solved my wifi problem. I had reconnection all the time.
Regarding the Bluetooth mouse, it works as well.
Regarding the Bluetooth headphones, they worked for a while but I suddenly lost sound. Settings window showed that my headphone is still connected and audio playback device still showed that my Bluetooth headphone is active. I simply lost sound. The only way to temporarily fix this problem was... Read more

Hi, My XPS13 (9343) running Windows 10 randomly crashes with a page fault in nonpaged area - as per attached screen shot. If I'm working all day it can occur 3-4 times a day mainly when I'm on webpages.
I upgraded to Windows 10 as soon as i got the laptop so I'm not sure if it would have happened in Windows 8.1
I've run the diagnostic and it's all good/passed, I've updated the bios to the latest A5 and updated all the drivers via the automatically detect drivers update but still crashes.
I initially thought it might be the Dell 4-in-1 adapter which I run a 22" screen off (so I run the laptop screen and external screen for dual screens) but it still crashes even if I don't use the adapter.
Where is the error info it collects? What can I do to pin point the reason for these crashes?

A:XPS13 (9343) Win10 Page Fault in NonPaged Area

I am experiencing exactly the same error in Windows 10 on my XPS 13 (infinity screen with touch).
I normally get the crash within half hour of login.
I have also updated BIOS and suggested drivers to no avail.
Basic hardware tests all pass. However, when I ran the thorough memory test I got the above error whilst it was part way through the test.
I thought that this was probably a memory hardware issue.
Any help on this would be much appreciated.

I've recently noticed after upgrading to WIn10 version 1703, that when the laptop comes out of sleep mode, the cursor on the secondary u2715 screen keeps blinking with a blank screen, and the display on the laptop remains black. The only way to restore the screen desktop is to either
1. disconnect the displayport cable from the laptop and then reconnect it, 2. Turn the external monitor off/on3. Enter the menu of the monitor and switch between DP 1.2 Disable/Enable.
I should mention the laptop is up to date with all updates.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hey all,
I have read many forum posts about this issue and have finally succumbed to it.
My laptop was working fine all of yesterday and when i then went to load it again, i suddenly was greeted with the black screen after the Dell logo upon startup. They keyboard is still working, however when plugging it into a monitor it still does not load or recognize. At the same time, factory and BIOS restarts have not done anything to resolve the issue. Changing from RAID start up also has not helped. It seems no matter what i have tried i still receive the black screen upon start up.
Anyone have any good ideas?
Also note, I have recently moved to Germany upon purchasing this laptop and am not in a position (for at least the next two months) to be able to take it back to where it was purchased from (Australia).

After upgrading my XPS13 to last Creator Update (Build 1709) I face a lot of wireless issues.

Many wireless networks availables do not show on the list of available networks even if are active and I can connect with other devices
takes a very long time to connect to wireless networks and shows the yellow triangle and need to try several times until it connects.
After sleeping or hibernating the laptop it does not connect to any wireless network. I need to restart and wait for quite a long time (over 5 minutes sometimes) until XPS13 connects again.
XPS13 easily disconnects from active wireless networks

Before updating to Windows Creator Update (Build 1709), XPS13 worked like a charm.

Already run Dell diagnosys and did not detect anythinh wrong.
Uninstalled and reinstalled Dell Wireless 1560 802.11 ac

But still facing the wireless issues. It makes working with my XPS13 difficult.
So I would like to know:

How could I check what is wrong?
Could I uninstall the 1709?
if that was not possible: How could I do a fresh install (and do not loose the Windows Pro upgrade I bought some months ago)?

Many thanks!

As of today my screen isn't working correctly. There was no abnormal use, no shock.
Upon bootup the screen is black and doesn't show the BIOS. I am able to connect an external monitor to see my Ubuntu partition. Only when ubuntu is fully booted the external monitor turns on, and my laptop's blacklight turns on as well as the touchscreen. Ubuntu boots by default (because of GRUB), I tried to boot into Windows but it seems like when I try, it errors and just reboots to ubuntu. No way to be sure though since the screen is entirely black and the external monitor only turns on when ubuntu is fully booted.
When in ubuntu, I can't access the windows partition because it says the drive is unsafe. Could the screen issue be related to a corruption in the windows partition?
I have successfully used the stand-alone BIST (pressing D and power) and the screen turns on and goes through the white, blue green etc... However when accessing it from the in-bios diagnostics menu (Fn + power OR F12 + power and the scrolling to diagnostics) the screen remains off. Could the screen issue be some sort of corruption of the bios?
Thanks for your advice

Currently I have the XPS resolution set at 2048 and at 100% scaling, text is not very crisp but readable and monitors displays is crisp.
When XPS 13 is at max resolution and at 100% scaling, fonts are way too small and unreadable, but when I increase the scaling to 150% text is readable but external monitors display get fuzzy and changing the size of an application especially Excel shows half the screen as white/blank. Any idea why external monitors text looks fuzzy at a scaling other than 100%?

When did the issue start on the system? Could you kindly check with an external monitor?
Turn on the system by holding the "fn" key + power button and it should start the diags on the system. Make a note of any possible beeps that you might possibly hear. The exact # of beeps in a cycle will help isolate the source of the issue.
Based on your description, I would suspect a faulty video card and the motherboard needs to be replaced on the system.

Hi Dell,
My Dell XPS 13 9343 is giving me a lot of trouble. I am currently running Windows 10 on this machine. Whenever I turn this laptop on I get a black screen and then I somehow enter my password and after 20 secs it comes on. Sometime when I am working the screen randomly goes black and then I push escape key and some other keys and it comes on. In addition, sometimes when I am working screen just randomly flickers and then blacks out.
Can you please help me with this issue?

A:Dell XPS 13 (9343) screen blacks out and flickers

Hi Jass,
If i am not mistaken, i think thats the self panel refresh function for Dell XPS laptops. I have the same issue when I first bought my laptop Dell XPS 13 9350. But here is what I did to fix that.
-Go to Intel HD Graphics Control Panel. Once opened, go to "Power". There you will see "Panel Self-Refresh" and disable that option. Then close it and restart your pc. It should be ok. Screen flickering should not be coming in/out now.
Hope that helps,

So I get two sort of blue screen errors: Memory management, and bcmwl. This has been happening on and off since last year and I'm not sure what is going on. I worked with support last year and all we did was just update all of my drivers - problem went away for a few months but then the blue screening starts coming back. I can't identify an actual pattern on what causes this, tried going through event viewer to find some sort of trigger I am really just not sure. I have the latest wifi driver given from Dell's driver website - and I believe after running the "Identify drivers" search engine off of Dell's drivers website, it recently just pointed me to update my graphics driver as well as install some applications (Which I haven't done as of yet).
Ran system file checker as well as Window's memory diagnostic showing no problems found on both ends, please help - really tired of getting these blue screens

I'm having problems with the monitor of my Dell XPS13 laptop. It's been behaving like this ever since I upgraded to Windows 10. I never thought much of it, as switching my laptop to sleep mode and turning it on again would usually fix it.
I'm not sure how to describe the issue I'm having with my laptop, but basically, sometimes when I try to turn on my laptop, 3/4 of the screen would be black. When this happens, I can't see much on my laptop screen. I would usually apply the method mentioned above to fix it, and it would work most of the time. If it didn't, I would force shutdown my laptop, and usually 1-2 would do the trick. (I tried not to perform force shutdowns though. It's only when the 'sleep mode' method doesn't work that I'd use it)
So today, when I turned on my laptop, the issue came back, and it's much worse than before. The same screen problem happened, but my method of fixing it just wouldn't work anymore... I tried force shutting down a few times (not much of a choice, as I can't see much on the screen) and turning my laptop back on, but the issue just wouldn't go away.
I don't really know how to go about fixing this, so I would really appreciste it if anyone here could help me resolve this issue. (I know force shutting down is bad, but I'm at my wit's end :( )

I noticed that that flickering happened when the processor is in a heavy load, so probobly maybe due to the energy management drive or something. Waiting for a solution!

I´ve successfully installed Windows 7 x64 Ultimate after getting rid of Windows 10. It was not easy but I could successfully install it together with all its drivers. There are no unknown devices in the device manager.
But for the life of me I haven´t found a way to project the screen wireless (AKA Miracast/WIDI). It did work when in Windows 10.
I´ve tried installing the Intel WIDI Utility Application v6.0.52.0 (A01) found in the corresponding W7 x64 drivers web page to no avail, the installer stops claiming that the platform is not WIDI compatible.
EDIT: After some research I´ve found out that likely because of the Dell 1820A (Broadcom) adapter this laptop is not WIDI compatible. However it is Miracast enabled.
Am I missing something?
Any advice is appreciated, I really don´t want to go back to W10, W7 works much smoother.

Hi all,First post!  My Dad's Lenovo laptop goes to a black screen when starting up, so is unusable.I haven't seen it in the flesh yet but have started to research things for him and have found that 'black screen' shows up quite a lot for Windows 10 and Lenovo PCs! We were so impressed with my Dad's PC I've ended up with the same model myself:Lenovo YOGA 500 Convertible Laptop, Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 15.6" Touch Screen. Also labelled as: Yoga 500-15IBD Laptop (ideapad)  I see some people mentioning hardware failures and others device driver problems with the graphic card etc. but haven't read a definite cause/fix for this so far. I've just found this recent critical BIOS update for this PC which mentions the black screen problem:Software name: BDCN63WW Version 63[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue.http://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/Yoga-Series/yoga-500-15ibd/downloads/D...I haven't seen this mentioned in the forums? Has anyone else used this?If the PC always boots to a black screen I'll obviously have trouble installing this! I'm hoping that it will boot in Safe Mode or I'm going to have some trouble installing it?! I don't know whether to install the BIOS update on my own machine which is running fine - I think I'll wait until I see my Dad's laptop first which will be in a few weeks. Has anyone had any experience of this BIOS update or other comments on this?Thanks. &nb... I'm still wondering about this... I've just updated the Lenovo Companion after seeing it mentioned in another thread. It looks like this s/w is supposed to scan the PC and recommend Lenovo updates - critical and nice to have ones. Initially the Companion was showing a critical update for Lenovo SHAREit and a recommended one for my BIOS. It says I'm currently on BDCN28WW and offered something like v61 and not the 63 I mentioned in my first post? After letting it update SHAREit and re-scanning the BIOS update is no longer being offered and still shows me on v28 ??? I'm not sure I trust this 'Companion' app!My laptop seems to be running fine so I don't want to break it updating the BIOS if it's not required. For all I know my Dad's broken one may be broken because it upgraded?! Does anyone else use/trust the Companion app?And has anyone else seen it change it's mind on recommended BIOS updates? Thanks.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. So, these are my problems described in the title. I cannot change desktop from black, only can set a picture as a background.

When I am in pictures folder for example, I see blank or black thumbnails.
When I right click and go to personalize, I can see black themes instead of actual pictures.

I tried almost everything.
- reinstalling video driver
- clearing thumbnail from disk cleanup
- resetting dwm.exe
- going into safemode and then restaring into normal windows
- I tried fixing shell by using "fixshell"
- clearing & repairing registry errors
- ran an error checker
- ran a file checker

I have Microsoft Office 2010 - I heard that it could be the issue, but maybe I am not right, anyway...

I attached a print screen photo.

And, I am hopeless, any help please? Thanks

I'm getting the black screen with movable cursor or KSOD (Black Screen Of Death) on Windows Vista.

What happens:
The system powers on.
Start windows normally
Windows splash screen

What I can do:
I CAN enter BIOS and have reset the default settings.
I CAN press F8 to give me advanced boot options, but all options have the same result, apart from "Repair your computer".
I CAN load the "Repair your computer" option.
I CAN move the mouse around the screen.
I CAN press shift 5 times to get a dialogue to appear, but no control panel.
I CAN press the power button to shut down the system.
I CAN start up in safe mode, which is exactly the same, but with lower resolution.

Windows Memory Diagnostics - No errors.
SFC Scan - No problems.

I think I saw this post aver at Toms but I also think you gave some additional info.
I think what may be going on it during the switch from the windows low res video driver to the driver used in normal mode.

Since you can get into safe mode try to go to device manager.

Is there a yellow exclamation mark there?
Or is it showing the video that you know should be there?

Hi, I have this 4 year old Lenovo Y560(config below)

The discrete graphic card has probably fried a long time ago, so last year when I did a clean install of Windows, I had to disable ATI Card permanently in the device manager using safe mode and used the Intel integrated card. A few days ago, I booted up windows only to encounter, "A disk read error has occurred, press ctrl+alt+del to restart" . I tried to boot up using WIN 7 install disc, but soon after the Starting Windows logo , the screen turns black and I am left with a cursor in a black screen. I tried to boot into Safe Mode but still I encountered a black screen with just the cursor .

I booted with Ubuntu live usb and was able to access all my partition and did back up and even formatted the Windows Partition. I tried to boot using a WinPe and faced the Black screen with a cursor again. I even reset BIOS to default, changed Graphics Adapter from "Discrete' to "Switchable' and vice-versa, but no effect at all. When I boot up using Ubuntu and ran lspci | grep VGA I can see both cards listed. I even tried to boot up using Windows 10 preview disk, still I get a black screen after the Windows loading screen.

I can't afford to buy any laptop presently since I am currently at college, so using Ubuntu for now. Is ther any way to install Windows 7 again? Is it possible to get the ATI Card working properly- reballing, reflow?

What other graphics adapter choices are available in BIOS setup? If you choose Switchable is there software on the Lenovo site for your model that's needed? Are you using the Display adapter software from there?

Have you tested your HD with the maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan, followed by a full Disk Check on a single disk partition you create?

Then work through the steps for Overcoming Windows 7 Installation Failures - Windows 7 Help Forums including trying an alternate install method (disk><flash stick) with new media. These steps overcome almost all install failures, so you'll be reasonably sure the problem is hardware or BIOS settings if nothing works. But don't skip any steps.

Try Clean Install Windows 10 Technical Preview to see if there's any difference with a more modern OS install. It's already a very polished OS and worth testing this.

My screen will go dark (not quite as black as when the computer is off) when I am using it, and although the computer is still working, I cannot see the screen. Then, on startup, I can occasionally see flashes of the startup logo, which is enough to let me know it is loading. My cursor quits working as well.

After I run spybot in safe mode, and run it again at startup, it works for some time. (This last time was 2 days). So I believe I have a nasty virus. I run Norton 360 all the time, spybot rather frequently, and malaware bytes about once a month.

I am able to get it in safe mode by hitting the down arrow once, and hitting enter.

It is very frustrating. I don't think it is the video card, as it is repaired after spybot use.

Any suggestions?

That is weird situation I'd say. I am unsure what actually is the issue here, perhaps one way of finding what may be happening is having a look at your Event Viewer Logs. You can find Event Viewer, in Control Panel, Administrative Tools.

Also please follow these 8-steps, and post your logs at Malware and Virus Removal Forum for analysis. Regards

Hi there,

Am using a Dell Inspiron 6400 with XP. It'd been running ridiculously slowly recently so I started an AVG scan and AVG immediately threw up a file, which I then deleted, then I got a "fatal error" message flash up. Since then I havent been able to get to the log in screen, it merely goes to the black screen with cursor, and Safe Mode is just a black screen with Safe Mode in each corner. Ctrl Alt Del also doesnt work in Safe Mode for some reason, and I have no CD. Ho ho.

Anything I can do to fix this?

Bit of a long story but here I go.

I have 2 Radeon 6950 with the crossfire thing set up, it's been working well for over 2 years.

Over the last few weeks I've been having issues, mostly while watching videos (usually HD and/or full screen). The video will freeze, the audio will loop, then eventually the screen goes black and I get an error message saying "Display driver has stopped working and has recovered".
Sometimes it didn't recover and I have to turn the computer off.

What's now happening is it will freeze at the windows start up. Then after resetting I will get to windows in very very low resolution and in black and white.

So I 're-seated' the cards. I couldn't notice any obvious damage to it except the fans were very dusty so I cleaned them.
Boot it up and I still get the black and white.
I checked the device manager and it said one of the cards was having problems, I uninstalled both drivers from that menu (not quite sure if I should have done this) and for whatever reason it's now working.

However it now seems one of my cards is not being recognised. Only one display adapter is shown in the device manager and AMD catalyst only recognises one card too.

What's the best course of action to determine what's wrong with what card (still not quite sure which one it is).

So on my computer, something strange happens when I uninstall UxStyle. It has broken my Windows install once and it has done it again. The first time, I kept on doing system restores to see what was the problem that made that black screen. After trial and error, I narrowed it down to UxStyle. So, I deleted Windows 8 and installed Windows 7, which is what I wanted in the first place. Now, I decided to triple-boot Windows 7 with Vista and 8.1, and it has succeeded. I reinstalled UxStyle thinking it was just a problem with my old Windows install, and then uninstalled it after a few days since I felt like the regular look was better. I rebooted Windows and the same effect happened.

So, I would like to know if I can get and replace those three patched DLLs with unpatched DLLs for Windows 8.1. Could I just change the broken ones to have .old next to them and then place the ones I get here there? Also, would sfc /scannow work?

Hello lct01a, and welcome to Eight Forums.

A sfc /scannow will attempt to repair any modified or corrupted system files, so that would be a good first step.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - Run in Windows 8

Hello there,

So as the title says, I'm having some problems with my computer. I bought it about 4 weeks ago, and no issues with it other than when I try to play an MMO that would make the graphics card work. The graphics card that is installed in the computer was separately bought and installed, so I'm thinking it might be conflict issues with the card, but I don't know.

The way it happens is, I run the games, I can play for anything from a minute, to 15mins and then my screen says it has disconnected from the image, goes black, and I can hear my computer restart, but my screen stays black. I have to manually power off and back on for my screen to start showing images again. Once restarted i get the "Problem Event Name: Bluescreen" thing.

It's really annoying since I just bought GW2 and I can't play properly any help would be appreciated.

Also, in the Action Center it's said that my Nvidia Graphics Card has stopped working or crashed, multiple times, naming the exact times my computer crashed.. which is why I believe it has to do with my card.

Overclocking -
I recommend if you are overclocking any hardware, that you reset these values within the BIOS to their default values in order to increase the stability of your system.

Please run the following tests for your graphics card and RAM:
RAM - Test with Memtest86+
Run Memtest86+ for least 7-8 passes, and preferrly overnight as it can take a while to fully complete.

Test each RAM stick individually, if an error is found then move the same RAM stick into the next DIMM slot and test again, if errors are found for the same RAM stick in every available slot then you have a faulty RAM module. On the other hand, if no errors are found in the next slot or the other slots for the same RAM module, then you have a faulty DIMM slot.

Test each RAM stick and every motherboard DIMM slot available.

I just bought this laptop for about 1 month, the laptop work fine before. But after...I don't know maybe after the windows update, the driver make the screen flickering and some dots appear on the screen, sometimes the screen lagging and went black. I'm pretty sure it's because of the driver because if I disable it, everything is fine, but that is just a temporary fix, every games is unplayable when I disable the driver. I tried to reinstall it using driver from Intel, Windows, Lenovo but none of them work(newest)

When I turn on my computer, it's all fine until after I login. I get these patches of small black rectangles all over my screen which stay above windows and everything (see attatched photo). I located it down to being an issue with dwm.exe as the boxes go away when I end that task. I just don't know how I should go about repairing this issue. I have Windows 7 x64 Ultimate.

do you have a win 7 dvd, to do a repair install?

I use XP Home Edition. I was trying to change my desktop appearance, and clicked on "My current theme" under the themes tab. My desktop changed to all black, including the lettering; just the icons are there, but they are tiny, as if the resolution was changed to the highest setting. I tried getting back to the desktop properties, but since the lettering is black I cannot read anything and I don't know where to click to change anything. Is there a keyboard shortcut I could use or some other way I can get back to a normal screen? I no longer have the XP disk, so cannot reformat.
