If I own a DVD purchased out a shop and I want to place a copy on my Hard Drive, is it legal in the UK to do this? I tried Handbrake to rip a music dvd (owned [personally]) but it wouldnt play the file back. Tried WMP and VLC but neither could read the file. Is this an ordinary occurance and all i need to do is try again and hopefully the next time it will work?
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
I can't answer about the legality, but I can tell you that you skipped a step. You need something to remove the protection first. The most common and easiest method is to use DVDfab HD Decrypter (which is free) to rip the movie to your HDD, and then Handbrake can take that folder and turn it into whatever type file you need.
Read other 7 answersHello. I'm ripping DVDs so that I can post snippets of scenes to put on Youtube videos within fair dealing laws. I'm trying to rip DVDs with Handbrake and it does create a file with playable videos, and there are no problems with the sound. However the picture quality comes out noticeably degraded. This might be a compression but I'm not sure.
I've tried adjusting the bar of the "Constant Quality -- RF" bar under the video section to increase image quality before downloading and adjusting over relevant variables but to no avail.
What do I need to do to resolve this issue?

Hey guys, I have to rip a DVD for my class assignment and splice two clips together, so my professor told use to use Handbrake to do it. However, when I click "open source", my dvd file isn't there. I downloaded a file called libdvdcss-2.dll to see if that would work and I keep trying to open it on my computer but my computer keeps saying that I don't have a program to open it with. What do I do?

Recently dumped my iMac for a Windows 8 POWERHOUSE from Dell. Unfortunately my Handbrake app will not copy commercial DVD movies, although this is easily done on a Mac running Handbrake. Any suggestions? Any FREE Handbrake styled alternatives for Windows out there?
you need to bypass the copy protection before you can get handbrake to transcode it. how did they get around that on the Mac???
once you've ripped the movie to the hard drive sans copy protection, you can easily use handbrake on it.
Slysoft is well-known for a slew of great products. Check them out. Also DVDFab.
the free stuff is kind of antiquated. stuff like DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink, etc.
Nowadays, my mind leads to YouTube Make-up Videos. This is because my sweet-heart likes it. Before long, there will be a birthday for her. So I have to prepare a kissable present – Burn a sing-layer DVD with these make-up guide and tips videos. Yep, I am totally kissable. LOL…
Well, hmmm, hmmm, forgive me for almost illiterate to these video editing stuffs. I’ve used Handbrake (most people recommended), but I have to download the video to be converted. That really frustrated me since the network is soooooo slow. Mad. Is there anybody know of this kind of software which can convert and burn the videos into DVD directly without any other downloader?
Looking for counsel from anyone familiar w/ Handbrake---> Windows XP---> iPhone. Much obliged!
Read other answersWhat are some alternatives for Handbrake? I've used Handbrake on my Mac for years, but heard the windows version doesn't work as well. I want to be able to backup copies of my DVD and also have digital versions for my netbook.
Thanks!
have you tried handbrake yourself?
have a look at dvdshrink - it can rip and backup. it's pretty basic, but it's free.
as far as commercial software goes, dvdfab is very good and can convert to h264, but it costs unfortunately.
I'm using Windows 7 64 bit, and when I tried to rip a DVD, after about one hour, an error came up saying something about "This log's size is over 100mb, so there's a problem". So how do I fix this issue?
EDIT: I checked the encode log file, and it said "Block Code disabled" or something like that. Is it just copyright protection?

I was really hoping presets would be restored in this version. I skipped 0.9.4 because the Xbox360 preset was gone, and no string I found online worked for me as a replacement for the preset.

sorry, but we cannot assist with this, unfortunately.
from the rules page:
Circumventing Copy Protection - While we believe it's reasonable to make backup copies of CDs and DVDs that you own, a lot of people break copy protection for the wrong reasons. The law is still vague, at best, as to if it is legal to break copy protection in order to make such a backup, even for personal use. (The DMCA, for example, seems to make it illegal.) As a result, we do not allow discussion of how to break copy protection at this time. If we can find a nice way to draw the line, we may reconsider this in the future as laws get sorted out.Click to expand...

Hello,
Recently downloaded some full movie (mp4), and found a Hebrew subtitle. Located both files in a folder,
opened the subtitle with Notepad, made some minor editing, saved it (encoding UTF-8) srt file,
movie and subtitle same name.
Played the movie in any player on the system, the subtitle rans perfect, no need to adjust timing.
Then I loaded the movie in "HandBrake (0.10.5.0 - 32bit)", imported the subtitle, selected Hebrew and
utf-8, made a small preview file - subtitle was not added.
Note, I used the same procedure several times ago with other movies - results were good.
Do not know what happened, I would ask for some help please.
Thanks

I rip my DVDs for playback on my Xbox360. I accomplish this by using Handbrake 0.9.3, since it contains a nice, neat profile for my 360.
The two newer versions of Handbrake do not support profiles, and I'm unaware of any way to export the profile and add it in to a new version. I've found plenty of strings online to try in the newer versions, yet none of the outputted files will play back on my 360. Ones done in the older 0.9.3 with the 360 profile work just fine, on my computer and the console.
Is there anyway around this, or anyway to get the original profile settings into 0.9.5?

The only thing i can think of is Taking note of what your 360 profile settings are in .9.3 and re-creating them in .9.5.
Also, the AppleTV/AppleTV 2 profiles should work on your 360.

I get the aforementioned BSOD, only in one specific situation, and it happens 100% of the time. Otherwise, I never get BSODs in this computer. The problem happens only when I open Handbrake, and drop an mp4 on it to use as a source. The moment I do that, boom BSOD. It's extremely strange. I have tried reinstalling Handbrake of course to no avail. For now my only solution is to have a Ubuntu VM with Handbrake and run it that way. Any idea what could cause this? Thanks.

i'm getting a KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE BSOD shortly after or by execution of the win10 version of handbrakeCLI (uses x264 encoder).

I updated the drivers before the last bluescreen (from the Lenovo homepage) but that didn't do the trick.
Laptop was upgraded from Win8 to Win10 some while ago. Dumps point to dxgmms2.sys or ntoskrnl.exe. Don't think it's an application fault, is it?

Could you explain to me what this handbrakeCLI software is? I'm unfamiliair with it.
Dumps point to dxgmms2.sys or ntoskrnl.exe. Don't think it's an application fault, is it?
Most of the crashes show some stuff of the DirectX Kernel graphics (dxgmms2.sys) what points to the display drivers usually.
The ntoskrnl.exe is Windows Kernel, simplified it is never the true cause unless you experience a hell lot of problems (much more then only bluescreens).
Daemon tools, Alcohol 120% and Power Archiver Pro uses SCSI Pass Through Direct (SPTD), which is a well known cause for BSOD's.
Please remove Daemon Tools and run the SPTD pass through remover.
Uninstall Daemon ToolsDownload the SPTD standalone installer and follow these steps:
Double click the executable to open itClick on the button shown below
If the button is grayed out, like in the image, there is no more SPTD installation on your system, and you can close the window
Hi. Until yesterday, I had Handbrake 10.2 installed. On launch, a message appeared (within the GUI) inviting me to click for 10.3. Which I did. I can't recall the exact sequence of events but it appeared to have gone smoothly and I was left with a popup saying Do you really want to uninstall 10.2? I said Yes as that seemed logical.
I then went to open up 10.3 ? nothing there. The only Handbrake related file I could find was a defunct link to the shortcut I had on my desktop. Ah well, so off I went and downloaded the 10.3 installer. But before I ran it, I used regedit to delete all registry entries referring to Handbrake. That way, my PC would be 'clean' right?
After the install, 10.3 launched and immediately showed a message about my previous presets and there it was ? 10.3 had the custom preset that I'd made with 10.2! Not only that, but 10.3 was able to load a DVD with DRM protection. To do that with 10.2, I had to copy a 'special' dll file into Program Files/Handbrake.
It seems I was mistaken then. Uninstalling a program and then deleting registry entries doesn't 'clean' your PC. Otherwise, my Handbrake 10.3 wouldn't have known about my old preset nor would it have the 'special' dll file.
So how DO you completely remove a program?
I am trying to down load the latest version of Handbrake (I dont have any old versions either). On dowloading the exe file when I click run it gives me an error saying ".NET runtime library v2.0 or newer is required. You have 1.1.4322"
What does it want me to do? I am trying to convert my dvds to MP4 format for my iPod video. Cant do anything due to this error.
HELP !!!
go to windows update and look in the non-critical updates, the .net v2.0 will be in there simply download and install via the website
I recently got into ripping Blu-ray movies and encoding them. However I have recently had a few blue screens with restarts. I use MakeMKV and it usually runs fine and doesn't give my problems. However, I have had problems encoding the MKV files with Handbrake v0.9.5. Here are my system specs:
Windows 7 64-bit Pro SP1
Intel Core i5-2500K (overclocked to 4 GHz)
8GB Corsair Vengeance RAM (Model CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B)
ASRock Pro3 Gen3 Mobo (latest BIOS update 2.30)
Mushkin Chronos 120GB SSD
Seagate Barracuda 1TB HD
Nvidia GTX 560TI graphics card (slightly overclocked, can't remember speed)
Cooler Master Hyper 212+ CPU cooler
The case also has plenty of fans (7 to be exact). 2 intake fans in the front, 1 intake in the side, 1 intake on the front of the cooler, 1 outtake on the rear of the cooler, and 2 outtake on the back and top. So the tower is staying cool. I'm running AXTU Hardware Monitor during the encoding and temps are staying steady around 50C, which I've heard are normal. The encoding is about 50% now and so far no crashes or spikes in temperature.
I thought the memory may be the culprit and I ran MemTest86. It returned one error after a few hours of running. I have not taken the RAM out to test each module or clean the slots. The timing is set at 9-9-9-24 and I dialed down the speed to 1333 from 1600.
That's all I can think of now but if I forgot something, don't be afraid to ask. Please someone help me!

Handbrake working, did an upgrade, won't rips movies anymore, gets stuck as it tries to download movie. Handbrake activity log says as Handbrake is trying to (unsuccessfully) rip the movie: libdvdread: Get key for /VIDEO_TS/VTS_04_0.VOB at 0x002d7dc3
Also further down on activity log: dvd: DVDReadBlocks failed (77729), skipping to vobu 77797.
And further down still: [23:48:41] dvd: vobu read error blk 105615 - skipping to next blk incr 10
I have no idea what any of it means or what it is trying to tell me. What is the key I'm supposed to get for /VIDEO_TS/VTS_04_0.VOB at 0x002d7dc3?
Anyone out there on planet earth (don't have to limit it to earth if that helps) can explain to me what the above (to me) gibberish means? I have already downloaded libdvdread some time ago and added it so I can rip movies, but now no go.
Suddenly handbrake is not doing what handbrake always do. Having upgraded to most recent handbrake causing the problem, whereby I included in to the handbrake file this: libdvdread. Still nothing. Should I go back to last version of handbrake I was using, see if that works? I've already deleted current handbrake and reinstalled it. Still won't rip DVD movies anymore. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

A "stop 0x124" is fundamentally different to many other types of bluescreens because it stems from a hardware complaint.

Some generic advice.
If you are overclocking STOP. Return to the default settings at least for now.
If you are running a RAID update its driver.

Hi there
Converting 1080p MKV files encoded in H264 to H265
What's the best setting to use keeping original quality as much as possible -- a 2hr film currently with my H264 encode is around 4GB for MKV file.
The source is full HD 1080p captured from SKY Q minibox. Quality on playback is excellent but I want to store a lot of these on an external HDD so want to compress the size down a bit.
(note you need to use an HDMI splitter to get stuff off the SKY Q minibox otherwise the capture device won't see anything (DRM).
The capture device doesn't unfortunately capture in H265 which is why I need the conversion step.
I would like to get about 50% of that size with H265 - but not sure of the settings in Handbrake I should use.
Any video editors here --help please !!!!!
I'm not bothered if the final container is MKV or MP4 so long as it's encoded H265 and quality is very similar (preferably identical) to original file.

My computer will play DVD burned on disc, but will not play the ones I buy from the store. It used to. Now it won't even recognize they're there.
Hi,
For ease of use, i want to make a folder available at my company network for people to drop any video files in, and then to make it output to a standard format (mp4) in another folder. That way no one will have to wait for a video to finish encoding or have to think about conversion at all.
I can use a computer that is always on and running, connected to the network and with free space and processing power, but i wonder if this is the right way. What i have so far:
Using Syncback Pro, I'm automatically watching for file changes in the folder, then syncing the changed files to a local folder (so not to directly encode from the network. Then, after each sync i have Syncback run a bat file for converting, which is inside the local folder. This is the code:
FOR /F "tokens=*" %%G IN ('DIR /S /B *.*') DO "C:\Program Files\Handbrake\HandBrakeCLI" -i "%%G" -o "%%G".mp4 --preset="Normal"
The problem is that it outputs in the same folder as it inputs, which makes syncing back to the network sloppy. The next step in the process, which would be to sync the output files back to the network can be easily done, but not if the original and converted files are jumbled together. =
My question would be:
Am i doing this the right way? (in the broadest sense)
and
Is there a way to output handbrakeCLI converted files to a different folder?
Any help is appreciated.
I have a Mashita 842s DVD-RAM superdrive in my Toshiba M400 notebook. I am running XP w/SP3. I don't recall whether or not in the past I've tried to play movie dvds on it using such as WinDVD and Windows Media Player 11. However, recently I've had the need to do so. Unfortunately, although data DVDs (both those I've burned myself and software discs) and audio cds can be read without a problem, movie dvds are not recognized as even being in the drive. The lack of recognition includes Windows Explorer, WinDVD and Windows Media Player. Because the other type of discs work fine, I'm assuming this a software or configuration problem. I've used both Windows and a third party utility and both say the driver(s) are the most recent. I would appreciate any and all assistance in diagnosing and correcting this problem. Thanks.
I have just purchsed a new laptop a HP 17t Power Laptop Product # X762AV . I would like to know when my laptop arrives and I create a USB recovery media Fash Drive , how can I Transfer that to DVDs or CDS or vice versa . I travel and would like to be able to take DVDs or CDs with me in case they are lost.I do not like to have just a flash drive , if I should happen to loose it I do not have a backup. Any help and instructions on how for me do thisthat you may give me would be greatly appreciated.Thank YouRay
The problem with moving a flash drive contents to DVD might be that the contents of the flash drive is larger than the DVD capacity. It might be better to be able to make the DVD's, if it still allows that. Keep in mind, it normally only allows one copy to be made.
Read other 2 answersHey. Recently my cousin gave me a couple of DVDs. They are The Office Season 2, if that matters at all. The problem is when I try to rip them it says they are protected and it can't, but I don't think it's right because I have the cases for the DVDs and everything. I am pretty sure he bought them at Walmart. How can I rip them, and does anyone know of a good DVD ripper?
You need to read the TSG Rules, pay particular attention to the parts that talk about illegal activities. You'll get no help with this issue here.

Is there a way to have both two ways ?
Hello Frederick, and welcome to Vista Forums.
From the specs below, it shows that your DVD drive is DVD?RW (?R DL) / DVD-RAM - Fixed.
So, yes it supports burning up to 4X + or - R type dual layer DVDs.

we have memorex dvdr ........... we are using them once ........... can dvdrw be redone if we dont like what we put on them............. if so how ?
DVD+RW or DVD-RW disks can be erased using most popular burning applications. So, the answer is yes.
Not long ago I purchased a pack of 50 blank Infiniti DVD-R discs (4.7GB) but when I try them out in my laptop, and go to 'my computer', it says capacity: 0mb and cd-r so I thought there was a fault with all the 50 discs so I purchased a pack of 50 Sony DVD-R discs (4.7GB) today and tried them in my laptop and the result... capacity: 0mb and cd-r according to the 'my computer' folder.
Please help me! Would you say there is some kind of fault with my laptop or a possible virus which "tells the computer they're cds when they're dvds".
This is the first time I've had this problem. I've used these discs hundreds of times in the past with ease.
Thanks!
Okay, I followed some instructions to see if the problem would fix; uninstalled dvd-r/cd-r drive and re-booted laptop and it should have re-installed but didnt. So I went to device manager and clicked 'enable' for the drive and then I get an error saying 'unable to enable this device code 22'.
Please, please help me.
My driver is: HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4082N for my laptop.
I have no clue what I need to do now as I cannot enable the device to install it and I tried a system restore to yesterday and I got a message after the laptop restarted saying cannot restore. The reason I restored to just yesterday is because I got a virus 2 days ago (core.cache.dsk) which caused loads of popups and took a day to get rid of it, but thanks to the people of this forum, I got rid of it so I don't really want to have to go through that again.
Thank you.
What is the difference between DVD+R and DVD-R?
Is there a place on Computers/Players to find out which one to buy?
The same goes for DVD+RW and DVD-RW. I know these two are rewritable, but how do I find out which ones to use?

i have recently had my personal dvd player stolen with about 20 dvds,i want to know how i can download them. i know, sounds like i just want free dvds. if anyone would want to help me out i would really appricate it. they were my favorite movies (pulp fiction, sin city, the matrix (the first one, the rest sucked), boondock saints, snatch, and jay & silent bob) and i just want to be able to watch them without paying 10-20 dollar apiece. please dont send "bull****", "thief", or anything of that sort, the same thing might happen to you.
I am sorry, but this violates site rules and this thread will be closed.
Read other 1 answersEventhough price of BDs have dropped, DVDs are still better value than CDRs or blurays.
100 DVDs(437gb) - $20 [0.045c - 1gb]
100 CD-Rs(70gb) - $11 [0.16c - 1gb]
1 CD-R(700mb) x 6.24 = 1 DVD(4.37gb)
you are paying 3.5x more for CDRs, but get 6.24x less than DVD capacity.
BR 25gb - 15pack(375gb) - $20 [0.05/gb], seems good, but you still get 62gb more from DVDs for same price, and DVD drives are installed in all PCs, but an external BD drive costs $128.
I think I will stick with BDs for watching movies, and storage with DVDs... until the price drops of 50gb BDs.
Cannot play mycomputer burned DVDs in my JVC DVD recorder and visa versa.

has anybody idea to get rid of the old cds and dvds which are useless and failed to write successfully totaling more than 100 numbers.

please move to correct forum if it is not allowed here. thanks
I simply bent all mine in half and 90% of them shattered. You can also use a paper shredder that has a slot for CD/DVD/credit cards/etc.
