Preferred Solution: Deleted My Documents and recovery software not finding files

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Of course there is better software but you have to spend $ for it.

Strangely your editor does not allow me to enter a title Using Firefox.

Hello again,

No matter which undelete programme I try, not one of them will ever find a deleted file.

I copy a file to a directory on C: or D:, delete it and then empty the Recycle Bin. Whatever application I care to use, the file, which is very unlikely to have been overwritten, can not be found. No trace of it ever.

The undelete applications are on drive Z: so that running the undeleter should have no effect on drive C: or D: where the deletion has been done.

Is there something wrong with my discs, or is it the security app ? It worked in XP !

My computer is currently being upgraded to Windows XP at work and I had soem file son there back in 2005 that I deleted. These were personal files. Will the techs uncover these files while they upload all my current material on my compyuter now to the server only to bring it back down from the server on a new harddrive containing XP. If so what can I do to prevent these files from being seen? Like I said it has been almost two years since i had these files on my computer and have long been gone. I know that some files can be recovered but does this take a lotof time? ALso I store tons of info on my computer so is it likely that...the old material was written over?

Thanks,

A:Finding Deleted files 2 years old

If you deleted them, and emptied the recycle bin, it is doubful they will find them.
They would have to be deliberately looking for, and trying to recover, deleted files.
When upgrading the OS, that is not usually done.

Monday night I found My Documents full of holes, giving the appearance that files have been deleted. (See the attached screenshot.)

This is all the more concerning because of a recent episode in which it is completely clear that some images were deleted from My Pictures. http://forums.majorg?ad.php?t=280456 In that case there was never any sign of the deleted images in the Recycle Bin or anywhere else.

I checked Undeluxe. It doesn't appear to have what I want.

I tried Google Drive, which is a mess for me now. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP!!
I log in and try to find a pretty important academic document in my My Documents, after it opens I see all files are completely gone except the folders. I have tried many of the solutions others have suggested but none have worked, I have virus scanned and found some ad-ware viruses and quarantined them all, I have system restored, I have used restoration.exe program where it locates all deleted files, I have done a windows search with some file names.

***FYI
I system restored a month back when all the documents were there and the only things since then that were installed was Sims 3 and an N64 emulator, both of these had no viruses when initially scanned at installation

All of these have come up to no solutions. Could it have been the viruses that may have deleted all my files?? Is there anyway to get them back?
To anyone that tries to actually help, thank you very much, anything right now at the moment is appreciated.

A:All Files in My Documents Deleted???!?!?!?

If the problem was due to a virus, the virus moves all your Start menu, My Documents and other files to a hidden directory under your Windows Temp folder. You have to enable Windows to view hidden files. Go into Explorer, click Tools, Folder Options, View, then uncheck the box for Show Hidden Files and Folders. I can't remember the folder name the files are hidden in, but they have sub directories named 1,2,3,4, & 5.

A:It looks like files may have been deleted from My Documents. What do I do?

What "somebody" told you is perfectly correct - System Restore (as the name suggests) restores critical System files back to a previous state, hopefully one where the "system" was working correctly.

It is sometimes useful to appreciate that in a Windows environment files are never actually "deleted". When you delete a file what actually happens is that the file firstly gets moved to another Folder, which Windows calls the "Recycle Bin". If you delete a file from the Recycle Bin it still isn't actually deleted, all the contents of the file still reside on your hard disk - what delete means in this context (in simple terms) is that Windows no longer knows where the file resides on the disk, which means that you cannot access the file using Windows.

However, if the file or files that have been so-called "deleted" contain very valuable information then in most instances you will be able to recover the files. There are typically two courses of action:-

1. Try to recover the files yourself through the use of a file recovery tool. Below is a link to a selection of such tools:-

http://www.techradar.com/news/software/applications/best-free-recovery-software-1141256

2. Use the services of a professional company that specialises in this type of activity. This option can be costly so is usually only economically justifiable for very valuable files - e.g. your company accounts that were not backed up by your now ex-accountant

I was stupid and ran combofix on my own. Having run malwarebytes, MS security Essentials, adwcleaner the laptop i was working on still had some odd behavior. I have used Combofix in the past on other computers without issue but this time it deleted documents, files and programs (combofix itself) from the desktop, My Docs and other locations. They appear to be in c:\Qoobox How do I recover them? I do not want to do anything with this computer until they are recovered. The user will be very upset with it's current state. Please help this fool!

A:Combofix deleted My Documents and other files

This is one of the reasons why we recommend not to use ComboFix on your own (see here). There are risks involved and we would prefer it if someone (a trained expert) who knows how to resolve any issues that may arise when running the tool, is supervising it's use.As a general policy, Bleeping Computer does not offer advice on how to run ComboFix unless we asked someone to run it or if there is a problem with the computer caused by running the tool. We recommend that people should not be using ComboFix without being advised to do so by a trained expert (see here) who is assisting them deal with a malware problem. When issues arise due to complex malware infections, problems running ComboFix (i.e. stalling, hanging, crashing) or with other security tools causing conflicts, experts are usually aware of them and can advise what should or should not be done while providing individual assistance. When false detections are identified, experts have access to the developer and can report them so he can investigate, confirm and make corrections. Those attempting to use ComboFix on their own do not have such information and are at risk when running the tool in an unsupervised environment. While our policy is not to offer advice on running ComboFix unless we asked someone to run it, we are willing to assist with resolving problems caused after using it. Hello,

I apparently deleted some files, though precisely when is an open question (likely within the last 3 months). I have already run a few file recovery programs to no avail. The files are mostly scientific articles, so they are replaceable. The catch is I need to know which files that were deleted.

I know that Windows is renowned for the amount of data it logs about system activity. I was hoping that there is an access log buried somewhere that I could search for the folder names and find a list of the specific files that were deleted. Also, any recommendations on the program(s) that would be helpful in doing this. I am running Windows 7 Professional x64 on a Dell Latitude D830.

Thank you so much for any help you can offer

A:The possibility of finding a file access log detailing deleted files.

Windows does not log that kind of thing unless file system auditing is enabled and the appropriate options set. This is NOT enabled by default. This auditing would consume a large amount of disk space in quite a short period of time unless it is very selective.

The real solution to this kind of problem is to maintain backups of all important files. There are a variety of ways that data can be lost and not all are preventable and not all recoverable. You need to be prepared when (not if) something happens.

Hi,

This is my first post on this forum, except the 'Hello' one. I've run into some serious problems a week ago!

We've opened an e-mail that informed about a postal package delivery - a fake one obviously. Right after opening the attachment the whole PC got infected.

Let me just say that I had no backup of those files. I have now just finished creating a windows back up for what I have now.

There are two things that I've noticed:
1. All the documents from Documents/My Documents directory were deleted - EXCEPT of photos (all encrypted).
2. Ransomware infection - files encypted, (HOW TO RESTORE FILES.txt, and *.encrypted files generated),

1. This is my main concern. I have no idea how to start the investigation. I've read many threads about files being moved to TEMP or hidden but I was unsuccessful in finding any evidence of records move or deletion. I would be happy if I can just understand what happend to those files. Whether these were deleted before the encryption took place by different virus? Or were deleted after? I really have no idea! I don't know exactly when I've noticed that all directories in My Documents are empty. My first thought was that I have deleted something by MalwareBytes or Norton, but I found nothing like that in the logs. So I went to the forum and found a thread describing just the same problem:

I noticed I had two copies of the My Documents folder, one in my user folder where I want it, and the other buried deep in my pictures folder (I think I accidentally dragged and dropped it there once when I was trying to change the order of icons in the navigation pane). I deleted the one in my pictures folder, and both folders disappeared!

What happened?

I closed the screen out, re-opened "my computer," and see both My Documents folders back, but empty.

1) How can I recover my files? My last backup was last week, and I've written quite a bit since then. I was actually about to back up again when I saw the annoying second folder and deleted it, not realizing they were linked. The folder was too large and bypassed the recycle bin.

2) How can I fix the two folders issue? I have the same problem with my music folder also, and have had problems with the folders under my username seeming to disappear, reappear, and move for no apparent reason.

The computer has Windows 7 Professional.

Thanks for any help.

So today I was cleaning out my computer, deleting and moving around old and useless files and documents, etc. I have one folder that contained a plethora of important documents for work (mostly WordPad .rtf documents that I spent countless hours composing). I have another folder, under the same name, in a different part of my computer, with old, useless stuff in it. When I attempted to delete this file, I accidentally right-clicked on the important file, and hit 'delete.'

Now, a huge amount of hugely important WordPad documents are gone. I checked my Recycle Bin, and nothing was there (on my computer, deleted files oddly usually dont go to the Recycle Bin). I then looked to see if I had stored backups of anything, and I had backup copies of a grand total of 3 of my documents (leaving easily 100 still gone). I then did the only thing I could think of that could possibly restore my lost files: I did a System Restore (I restored my computer to a checkpoint made at about 8 PM yesterday). They were still not there.

PLEASE help me out. Is there any way that I can get these WordPad docs back? These are important, and I spent literally countless hours of work researching and writing these (all of them I need to use in the future). Any help is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

I am running Windows XP Professional.

Basically i had the My Documents folder as a sharing file on my old network. After joining a new network when i moved i tried to remove the folder from My Sharing folder but seem to have deleted the actual My Documents folder and all the files contained within it.

As such all my photos and files are now removed/deleted or misplaced the within windows XP. My hard drive is still showing as having the same amount of free space as it did prior to me deleting my documents so im thinking that perhaps the files that were previously within my documents folder have been lost or moved somewhere? ive checked obvious places like Recycle Bin but cant locate them anywhere even via the Search function for all files.

FYI There is one account on the laptop which is password protected that i use to log in, its an admin account so should have full access to everything.

When i go in trying to locate the folder from My computer as per the below this is the message i get. Its the same from every shortcut to My Documents too.

In my Ult. Vistax64, Windows update hangs. I tried numerous fixes from Microsoft (MrFixIt) and others. nothing seems to fix it, including a full system image restore from a month ago.

System Restore also seems to have had its restore points deleted as there are only two recent saved restore points/images.

And I have noticed that after booting up, and perhaps at other times, my CPU usage goes to 100%. Both the Windows update service is running (wuauserv) - see pic - and when I stop it, CPU usage gets better.

what is a bit concerning is that my McAfee virus is also taking up CPU usage as if transfer activity over the internet is heavy. No viruses are found, either via real-time scanning or if I run a manual scan on the hard drives.

I have also run an sfc /scannow , there are a lot of PendingRenames, which seem to be from the sfc command fixing errors, as well as a lot of "duplicate ownership...", which is sort of scary to see when I have a problem with my computer.

Besides the failure of the windows Update, the SFC /scannow keeps finding corrupt files and repairing them, and it does not seem just limited to a few that "are erroneously marked as corrupt" and not a problem, according to research into these problems.
The computer seems to be working fine, but not being able to install updates is a problem, and the high CPU usage is suspicious. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi. I've been working on renaming all my music for the past few weeks using a program called Tag&Rename. I have over 350 Gbs of music so it's been quite the undertaking but I've made a fair bit of progress. Until all of a sudden in the middle of renaming some albums today I was shocked to find that all my albums from A through S were just...not there anymore. All my work had just vanished for no apparent reason. I had just deleted a redundant music folder when this happened and thought that maybe I had somehow deleted more than I asked for but there's no trace of the folders anywhere not even in the recycle bin. don't know if this is the correct place to post this..but i run XP sp3 so figured it was a good as any.

i have accidently deleted a whole bunch of various files to the tune of 80 some odd GB from my portable hard drive.
Word Perfect, Word 2000, Excel 2000, jpg, tif, gif, pdf,

i have used recuva, diskdigger, glary undelete and free undelete so far.
when they said the file was in excellent or recoverable, i selected those ones.

but when i tried to open word perfect or excel they would not open.
most of the files that wouldn't open had Dl or D| preceding the sector number or name of file.

my question is....is there a way around this to open these files or are they really not recoverable even tho
the indication was that the file was in good shape.

i have read about various repair softwares, i tried one for word perfect and one for pdf. neither worked.

hope someone can give me some help.

Chances are that something has written over the top of them by now. If you want to recover files, you should stop using the drive as soon as possible so that no more files get overwritten. You should then scan the drive by connecting it to another computer, or by using a boot CD or USB stick with recovery tools on it.

I ran an Acronis "Cleanup" utility that supposedly completely removes Acronis products from a computer. Either I had a serious disk problem at the same time, or it also deletes backup files ... including non-Acronis backup files. Is there a good, safe, reputable data recovery tool for recovering deleted files and directories? I know there are programs advertised as doing that, but I don't know if they really work.

A:Good data recovery tool for deleted files?

Try the MiniTool Data Recovery tool -- it's free: http://minitool.com/data-recovery-so...very-free.html

I used this just the other day to restore a deleted partition.

Good Luck

Hello,
I am using a HP notebook with Windows 8.1. When I purchased the laptop the D drive was set aside for 17gb worth of recovery files. I was attempting to re-partition the harddrive so as to be able to save things to a place other than the main C drive. I hold only base computer knowledge and managed to delete the only visible file within the D drive. I am unsure the name of the file. The file was roughly 230mb so the rest of hidden files remain. My question is as follows.

Is the inability to do a system restore or recovery important?

If so, will I be able to restore my computer at this point?

If not, how can I replace the file in order to do so?

If unable, would a fresh installation of Windows fix my error?

I do not have ready access to the Windows installation discs and codes/keys required so this would be the last resort hopefully. I don't know enough about this subject to even ask another intelligent question (or rather an intelligent question). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ryan

Are you getting an error message when you click on the "Get started" button? For example, "Could not find the recovery environment".

A:restore deleted files from recycle bin software??

There are a number of free un-delete programs. I like Recuva. Do not install the program lest the data you need to recover be overwritten. Instead remove the hard drive and install it as a slave in another machine. Run Recuva from there.Good luck

I recently used registry cleaner/performance enhancer software from Uniblue. It seems to have worked very well, but my recycle bin is now full of cab files, some of which are quite large. Can I permanently delete them, or should I save them in case of future problems? All of my apps seem to be working fine.
Thank you.

A:Cab Files Deleted By Registry Clean Up Software

It won't hurt anything to leave them in the recycle bin for a while, this will allow you to see if anything is missing that you may need.

Hi,my computer was taken over selling on ebay. Someone listed 2 pages of football tickets for sale using my account. They made over $9000.00 in just a few hours & the buyer threaten me not knowing their scammed. My emial is redirected to random people,
Buyers don't receive my sale invoice, random people do. I don't receive payments buyers make. I haven't been to/used ebay for a month yet I get e-mails confirming my money has been transferred out of my bank account. I have over 4000 virus starting with Win32, ex: klezf. I paid a tech to restore my son's computer. He knew my total monthly income is a $800.00 disablity check & I'm a single mom. He assured would leave the computer like brand new. He fiddled with it & left before the test was complete. He took my $75.00 & I couldn't get into the system. I got it up & running but computer is slower than slow. Sometimes a page opens sometimes it doesn't. I go online & a minute later I'm logged out. Sometime, it allows me to stay on a little longer. Lots of my files & several programs are no longer in the computer. I get error messages for hardware, IE,etc. The list goes on & I don't know what to do. My son needs the computer to get his essay done (homework). I got avast 4.7 but the virus and spyware continue to multiply. Can you please get into my son's computer and fix it or help me fix it please!

I don't know if this question has ever been asked.

I want to know if anyone knows of a piece of software or a way to clean deleted file entries from directories permanently.

I'm asking because I have downloaded a few freeware and shareware programs and tested them for recovering deleted files. I did get one of them to work and recover the deleted files but the problem is it takes so long to scan the drive and it displays so many results it takes forever to search through them for the files I actually want to recover. So what I want to do is run some software that will clear all deleted file entries from my directory listings permanently (zero them out or something.) This way the next time I have to recover a deleted file the list will be much shorter after scanning the drive.

I have Windows XP Pro installed and have 2 physical drives with a total of 3 partitions. The first drive is formatted with 2 NTFS partitions and the 2nd drive is formatted with 1 FAT32 partition (moved this drive with a lot of data from another PC and don't want to bother reformatting to NTFS.)

Anyways the last time I scanned the E drive (FAT32 - 80GB) it took about ten minutes to scan the drive for recoverable files and listed som 50,000 - 60,000 files that could be possibly be recovered. Even using filters to limit the list I came up with 27,000 JPG files (as I was trying to recover about a dozen JPGs I accidentally deleted.) I was able to find them without an incredible amount of di... Read more

After experiencing an error with windows, it wouldn't start up and said I was missing the hal.dll files, I fired up the windows recovery program. It worked like a charm, replaced windows and the hal.dll file, however all my folders with docs and pictures on the desktop that were there previously (which accumulated over years) were not there anymore. Is there any way to recover these missing folder and files? They weren't saved on the c: directly but only on the desktop. I tried system restore but it said there were no system recovery points I could recover from.
Does windows make a backup of these desktop files before it deletes them?
Please help anyone, thanks!

A:System recovery for xp deleted my personal files on desktop, can I recover them?

If the computer hasn't been used much since the recovery most of your files will be intact.

The tricky bit is getting them back. The only real way to retrieve your data is to remove the hard drive, plug it into another computer as a second drive and run a piece if recovery software over it.

The first two links are to free recovery software, the third is paid for - this one does work very well.

Hi guys & gals,

I'm trying to find a software that can compare files that are added, deleted or modified. Not necessarily done by installers only, but also by programs that download updates, etc.

So, the program will first index all the files throughout whole system/partition/drive. Then after executing/launching/installing a program, index again and highlight the differences.

Is there such a program? If yes, what is the name to such a program?

Thank you
Henry

A:software that logs files added, deleted or modified

Advanced Uninstaller Pro does exactly that (Advanced Uninstaller PRO | A Swiss Army Knife for PC Users). Among other things, it has an option called "installation monitor" which can track what programs really do to the systems. While it says "installer", it really catches any changes done by any program though.
It works by taking sort of an "image" at the beginning, then running the program, then taking a second "image" afterwards and compares and present the differences in a report. It can't be more similar to what you described you wanted

Guys I took a hard drive out of a macbook pro and placed it into a external enclosure. I connected it to my pc running vista and I was copying the files from the macbook pro onto my pc and by accident I hit the delete button.

The folder that I deleted is still in the recycle bin, well at least I can see it but the size of it is over 2 gb. I tried to just restore it but that is not working. Thing is I do not need the entire folder just maybe 100 mb of some files that are inside which is just pdf and documents. Any idea on what I can do? I have tried several different types of software and most will not work because I am guessing the macbook pro hard drive is a raw drive.

Thanks guys.

Hello

a friend of mine have mistakenly saved and overwritten an excel file which has been her university project. Is there a chance of recovering the file before the state of changing and saving?

Please provide me with a software name.

Thanks in advance

A:Recovery Software for overwritten excel files

Right click the file and select Properties. Look under the Previous Version tab. It will do a short scan and list any found.

Edit: Hindsight is 20/20 but for an important file such as the one your friend overwrote, it should always be backed up to two separate devices or even cloud storage such as dropbox or onedrive.

Hello everyone, it's me again!

I need some assistance, after a mate of my e-mailed me as has deleted some files by mistake, and was wondering how to get them back (If possible?) I do wish people would stop pestering me, due to my slightly better than average knowledge of PCs! Here's his e-mail:

Quote:
Hi matey! I have accidentally deleted the public-shared videos folder from my WD MyBookLive 2TB drive (What a muppet, eh?!) I haven't written to the drive since so the data should be intact. I don't have the equipment I need to interrogate the drive, to remove any data, either (Hint, hint!)

Is there anything that can be done? Or will it have to go off to a data recovery specialist? (I have warned him that this might be the case......)

Will an attempted recovery help? Or could it destroy the data even more? How could he go about it? But a caddy etc?

Many, many thanks in advance

A follow-up to my previous thread:
http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic127696.html

I, with the help of other generous members, have concluded that my USB drive has automatically deleted the important & only files that I had on the drive... is there any file recovery software besides Recuva that are freeware and can restore the files from USB?

Anyone who needs more information is kindly requested to go back to the original thread ( http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic127696.html ) and he/she can infer what I am referring to.

Thank you in advance.

A:How should I recover lost files on my usb using a File Recovery Software?

there are several software that you can use.
When it comes to recovering lost files, I prevfer Runtime's GetDataBack for FAT or NTFS, your USB Flash drive will most likely be running a fat file system, so use GetDataback for FAT.

A:recommendation for recovery software to recover folder lock files

Hello,

What do you mean when you say folder lock files? Do you mean it has the little lock icon next to the folder?

As for recover programs, we have used Easeus Data Recovery before which has worked well.

Also, I have moved your thread to another area on the forum as its not a network issue.
