Display Issue - Dim Display for Dell Inspiron 5000 (Model 5547) - Touch Screen Display with i7 4th Gen Processor and 16 GB RAM

Q: Display Issue - Dim Display for Dell Inspiron 5000 (Model 5547) - Touch Screen Display with i7 4th Gen Processor and 16 GB RAM

I have Dell Inspiron 5547 laptop (Touch Screen, 15 inches, 16 GB RAM and i7 4th Gen processor, Out of Warranty). Some days back, suddenly the display went dim and anything is hardly visible. After some initial investigation, the display chip (may be VGA or LED display chip) on the motherboard appears to be burnt out (may be due to voltage surge). Even the numbers printed on the chip is not readable because of which it is difficult for the local repairing shops to repair this problem.
I think Dell India Service Center doesn't deal with chip level repair and hence replacing motherboard is the only way they can fix this. This will be very costly (considering that the laptop is not under warranty so will have to pay for warranty extension, motherboard replacement and repair service) and time consuming.
Hence, to avoid all this I have come here to seek some assistance.
If there are anyone using the same laptop (Inspiron 5000 series 5547 Touch Screen Display with i7 4th Gen Processor and 16 GB RAM) then could you please take a clear picture of your laptop's motherboard or if you recognize the display chip then only that should be sufficient. In this case, I can read the chip related number from the image and try to repair it.
What are the charges for buying a warranty for the laptop, motherboard of my laptop and repairing charge?

Request your response and help.

Preferred Solution: Display Issue - Dim Display for Dell Inspiron 5000 (Model 5547) - Touch Screen Display with i7 4th Gen Processor and 16 GB RAM

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

You'll have to call Dell about the possibility of a warranty extension; in the US, it's sometimes possible but will likely run over $300 -- or about what a board replacement would cost.
If you're getting video, the GPU is OK -- and it's more likely the power circuit to the backlight that's bad. It'll likely cost as much to repair as to replace the board -- though you'll still be putting $300-400 into an out of warranty system, so replacing the system may be a better idea (if you do this, consider buying a 3-year warranty with the next system).

I started having issues yesterday, the day after I installed teamviewer a program that is on my iPad also to remotely control the laptop. At first the screen started freezing when I was in the middle of a Java game. So I restarted the laptop only to have it freeze at the main screen (after login).

The screen would freeze the display would change to a very low resolution (I think). So I kept restarting it only to repeat. Until eventually once past the windows logo the screen would turn black and blank. Sometimes the display would turn on black and blank and other times it would do that after the logo.

A few times I managed to get it to go into safe mode and I restored to a few days ago but it made no difference, I also tried many other things like changing some settings but nothing worked.

So after like 2 or 3 hours I Rolled back and disabled "nvidia quadro nvs 135m" (since I read it might be causing the issue and I should uninstall it which I couldn't), once I disabled it I restarted the computer and made it to the main screen without issues, and I could even load my game. I enabled it again And restarted the computer only to have the same issues so I disabled it again after finally getting into safe mode.

I don't know if it works fine now, I left it on at most for 5-10 minutes without any issues and I never actually logged into the game to see if it works.

I figured out that in my display settings instead of showing my main monitor it only sho... Read more

I've been requested at work (Maybe not always a good idea to let someone see the "cool new" Windows 7 running on your desktop) to install Windows 7 RC on a Dell Inspiron 1150. The install was pretty clean without much trouble except i'm stuck with the Display being set to the Generic PnP with a terrbile 640 X 480 setting. I've updated the VGA adapter to the correct Intet graphic Controller. Still researching for info on the fix for this. But wondering if anyone else has already delt with this issue.

Hello, I have an inspiron N5010 laptop (out of warranty), which was working fine all these years.
Unfortunately, yesterday when I tried to turn it on, the system initiated normaly but the screen remained blank and then it started beeping 8 times every 3-5 seconds. According to what I found online, 8 beeps indicate an LCD failure. When I tried to connect it to a TV monitor via HDMI cable nothing came up, the monitor detected the connected device but it had no signal. Since the screen is blank, I cannot run the diagnostics neither enter the BIOS setup. In case of an LCD failure I could replace it by myself, but I cannot be sure if that is the problem. Could you please tell me what can I do to distinguish if it is LCD or GPU failure?I have to mention that the laptop was suffering from overheating, hence I used a cooler to reduce the temperature. Thanks

I have a Dell Inspiron 350, which has been very reliable. My wife shut it down while we were on vacation. Now when we try to get it to boot up from a cold start, the blue power light comes on, the fan runs, and it beeps at us, but never goes beyond that. I've tried the unplug/wait/plug back, and have no success. Any suggestions, or is it terminal? Would a new hard drive be worth putting in? Thanks

A:Dell Inspiron 350 Won't Display Anything on Screen

Welcome to TSG,

Does it beep once or more than once? Have you tried another monitor? Start by trying another monitor.

The hard drive is not the issue here as a hard drive is not an essential component of the PC and not required for for video output which is basic functionality.
Also, I've changed the title of the thread from your name to a more meaningful one.

Well to start with the problem arose 2 days earlier when I was playing League of Legends as usual. The laptop crashed to black screen and started rebooting but was presented by a blue screen error Vedio TDR Failure(atikmpag.sys) and it would keep restarting.
In case you are wondering, no new drivers or windows updates were installed that day or the week.I have been using the same drivers with no issues for an year or so.I didnt have the recovery disk with me,so I downloaded the same version of OS 8.1 single language from the windows website into usb drive and successfully booted into safe mode with it.Then, I proceeded to uninstall AMD drivers and all its components and voila,my computer could boot normally again.Hence, the problem is AMD.Now, I tried installing the original AMD drivers from the dell support website , which were successful except AMD DISPLAY DRIVER,which brings me the root cause. The log just says AMD DISPLAY DRIVER status failure.Again, I uninstalled in safe mode and tried installing from AMD website(the updated ones),which installed successfully. The laptop rebooted but after 4-5 minutes, again another blue screen error popped up saying THREAD STUCK IN DEVICE DRIVER and restarted again and again.Currently, am ru... I know from searches on here that this laptop is pretty much obsolete when it comes to finding drivers for some aspects of Win 7, but I've also found some who seem to have got it running well on it, so hoping this isn't maybe a driver problem but something else that maybe can be easily fixed.

Basically Win7 installed without any problems but is running in a box centred in the middle of the screen - I tried to improve it by changing up the screen res, but while that did bump it up a bit it's still well shy of the screen edges i.e. 1 inch of black all around it. Is this thus another driver issue do you reckon or does anyone know of any other way to increase the res, as I can't find anyone else with this particular problem in searches here or elsewhere (unless I'm not searching with the right terms).

Already have it installed on my desktop so the laptop was really just for backup of sorts and not the end of the world if it won't work properly, but be nice to know for sure.

A:dell inspiron n5050 display problem. shaky screen

Run the built-in self test on the LCD -- hold D through powerup.  If you see the same fault, it's likely a bad screen. If not, it's either a bad video cable or a bad GPU -- replace the cable first.  If that doesn't solve it, the GPU is bad -  which means a replacement mainboard (or on a system of this one's age, a new system).

Gday all.
Just curious on 2 upgrades. I am looking to see if a Touch Screen is available and/or if the GPU is upgradeable. I notice that my Ram/CPU usage isnt fully used when I play games but my GPU is.I play games such as CS:GO (Counterstrike Global Offense), Rust and rocket league. They dont run too badly, but I'd prefer a better frame rate. I currently am using a Dell Inspiron 15" 5000 Series laptop.
 - i7 6500U 2.5Ghz,  2.6Ghz turbo
 - 8Gb Ram (DDR3 I believe, speed im unsure of)
 - R5 M335
 - Windows 10 64-Bit
I do believe the model is a 5559 however not too sure, as for some reason it doenst describe it on the box etc.... However I do know the MPN.

A:Dell Inspiron 15" 5000 Touch Screen!?!? GPU Upgrade? CPU Possible Bottleneck?

The GPU is not upgradeable - it's a chip soldered to the mainboard.
The screen is technically upgradeable, but the cost of upgrading will likely approach or exceed 50% of the original cost of the system, as the entire top half of the system need to be replaced.

The display is plugged in and touch is registered - except the touch registered on another monitor, not the S230tm. I have two build-in touch displays on my device (it's a HP Sprout Pro), and the S230tm is a third screen. However, the touch from the S230tm gets registered on the first/main display. The first displays still works correctly with full touch functionality. The location and interaction is correct , it's just the display that is wrong - I can drag and click items on my FIRST monitor by touching the THIRD monitor. I found that some have used Tablet PC settings to configure the correct monitor, but... I can't successfully touch the display when the "touch display" message comes up on the S230tm as the touch is clearly registered on the first display. I've updated the driver from the original 1.0.0 to the recommended 2.0.0RevA, and moving around different USB connectors, to no avail.

Hi all,
I've recently bought a Dell 7559 refurbished, with the Intel core i5 and GTX 960m. Within a day or two of use, the screen began to flicker upon booting up or waking from sleep mode, and it seems that the longer the laptop was in sleep/off mode, the worse the flickering is upon booting up. I've been trying to figure out what's going on, I've updated all drivers and such from the Dell support page, but nothing seems to fix this issue. Does anyone know what's going on? I'm certainly bummed out to have run into this issue within just days of buying the product. I've uploaded a youtube video to try and show what's going on.

A:Dell 7559 screen/display flickering issue

Hi DukeBaluk,
I’d suggest that you update BIOS on your computer to check for issue resolution. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, then download the BIOS from BIOS section onto the system and install it.
Also, we will have to perform the ‘LCD BIST’ (Built in Self-test) on the computer. Please follow the steps mentioned below to run the “LCD BIST’.

Turn of the computer.
Press and hold down the ‘D’ key on the keyboard and press the Power button.
You will see different colors on the LCD screen. Please check if the issue reoccurs on the screen.

In addition, please connect the system to an external monitor and check if the issue reoccurs.

Recently the backlight went out on the wifes’ laptop display. Thinking that I was pretty smart, I picked up a replacement on eBay.

What I ended up with (my own fault) was a LG Phillips LP150X2 XGA Display. The cable is different, however it still plugs into the video card.
So I figure ill give it a try any way.

The display only displays on two thirds (left side). See Signature for system info. .

What should I do? I’m lost.

I would recommend starting with removing the battery, then unplugging the AC adapter, and then holding down the power button for 15 seconds or so. After this release the button, put back in the battery and AC adapter, and lastly press the power button. Then see if the system boots up. If this doesn't work, you could try doing minimal boot, like removing memory/HDD just to see if you get a screen. Unfortunately if none of this works, it sounds like it might be a hardware issue. Here is a link for the service manual to remove items, let me know if you have any questions. Best regards,Brad

I just bought a i5 3570k (yes the socket does match the motherboard) and when I put it in and turn the PC on, the screen says there's no input display. When I use my old processor however, the PC works fine. A:Dell Vostro 460 new processor, no display.

The "K" CPUs are unlocked - there is no lock pin to tell the mainboard the multiplier.  They're designed to be used on boards that have a BIOS-adjustable clock lock -- i.e., for overclocking.  Since your board does not have such a provision (it depends on the CPU lock to set the processor speed), this processor will not work with your system - you need a standard 3570 CPU, not the unlocked 3570K.

They've replaced it and display was working fine for few weeks. After few weeks, I had my battery changed as it's health was in bizarre state after running diagnostic test and it prompted for replacing the battery.

Hi alemano ,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
If the laptop is showing display using your external TV then most likely the graphic card would be performing well since external projection of display is an advanced feature .
The problem may be the LCD or LCD cables that you can try to unplug and replug checking if there are impinged cable along the way and in the port.
Herewith is the hardware manual that can help you on the disassembly of top , bottom cover and LCD panel.
The user guide here and service training video would also be a good reference.
Take time to review the steps .
Hope this helps you in your steps.

The display doesn't fit on my laptop (Dell Inspiron 9400). I use a separate monitor and keyboard. All was well until the left hinge on the laptop broke. A PC expert came round and fixed the hinge by removing the screen etc. Now the display is ok for the monitor but too big for the laptop. It's too wide and the top 1/4 repeats along the bottom. The guy had done something to speed it up but wouldn't say what. He said it was a software problem and the system needed to be completely restored from the discs and left me with the problem. Total restore is not really an option, but I did try to restore to a date before he was here. There were no retore points available. I don't know why. In the end I did try control f11 which has worked before but that now doesn't. I really do not want to restore. I just want to be able to use my laptop without the monitor when I travel.

I have tried change the resolution but that has no effect on the laptop, just on the monitor

A:Display too big Dell Inspiron 9400

First make sure the correct driver for the laptop's graphics adapter is installed by checking Device Manager. If no error symbols are shown there, then everything is probably okay as far as drivers are concerned.

Now go to Control Panel >> Display >> Advanced Settings (I think, but I no longer have Windows XP so not sure).
What you are looking for is the "Display Resolution" adjustment. It may be set at the wrong values. See if you can drag the slider towards the right (higher resolution). Then click 'OK' to save the new setting. You won't actually see the result until after you click 'OK' so you may have to experiment with various resolution settings until you get the image to display proper size on the laptop screen.

If you are unable to change the resolution (slider won't move or it's already at it's highest setting) then you may need to re-install the video driver.
You can download that from the Dell website appropriate for your part of the world.

I was considering getting a motherboard off ebay.

If anyone has any experience with this type of problem please let me know

A:Dell Inspiron 7500 no display

I would say its absolutely nothing to do with the video at this stage.

If the computer does not boot, then it will not even try to use the video. It cannot.

Plainly its not booting, but as long as it has RAM and a working motherboard and CPU, it should at least make POST (where it would give an error such as operating system not found, when no HDD is present). Only then would you get the BIOS and POST displays if the video is working. Any beeps? Should be one for a POST completion. (Power On Self Test)

Hi guys, since yesterday I have one vertical line on my screen. I am sure it is hardware problem. I red some topics in the web about similar problems and decided to take off the bottom aluminum part of the case and to make sure  the display cable is on its place and is not lose. Everything looks OK. After that procedure the problem still exists.
So my question is : is there way to repair it without need to change of the whole screen assembly ? Can I change only the LED display cable, as I found some spare of them on Ebay ?
Does anyone of you experienced such a fault in this model display ?

Our Inspiron 2330 all-in-one display is acting very strange.  When it is turned on there are horizontal lines-that work their way down the display in pinks and blues.  When the lines are there the cursor cannot be moved into that area and the area displayed is distorted.  It will take up about 3/4 of the screen and work its way down the screen until the screen then is finally all able to be accessed.  This happens for about 15 minutes and then--almost like when it is all warmed up or something--the display is then fine until the next time I turn the computer off.  If I turn it off for only a few minutes and back on again it is fine, but if it is off overnight or for several hours the problem is back again and I will need to wait approximately 10-15 minutes for the display to be fully functional again.  It's almost like when it is warmed up all is fine.
I did all of the Dell updates available.  Windows (8.1) is also up to date.
Any ideas what is going on here and how I can fix it?

After a thourough physical cleaning of the laptop, I had found that the main cpu cooling fins were plugged with lint. (I bought the computer used) I brushed, blew, vaccumed all the dust and lint out of the case. I still have a few lines on the display, so I figure I need to replace the graphics card.

I am familiar with the heat issue in PC's, I assume it is a bigger concern with laptops. What should I look out for as indicators that the main board is flaking out? Would this do similar things as a PC? I have bee lucky enough to find a NOS graphics card. If I have to replace the main bord also, at some time, I feel like I would be better off scrapping the unit and getting a brand new one.

This laptop should have a video chip on the motherboard, and not a video board. This is similar to on-board video in a desktop motherboard. with desktops, you can add a video card if the on-board video fails. With most laptops you would have to replace the motherboard. Does an external monitor show lines?

I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop that fails to display. The processor fan spins. The processor gets hot but it can't boot nor dispays even when an external monitor is connected to it

I need help on how to get it back on please.

Try using an external monitor. You may have to enable the external monitor port using keys on the keyboard. If the external monitor works, your laptops LCD backlight is probably burned out

I have a DELL Inspiron 1100. When I turn it on it will boot to Windows XP and then after a while the screen goes blank (black). If I shut the cover and open it again the display will come back on for a while and then go blank again.

Also the windows screen is only about 1/3 of the screen.

Anyone have an idea?? Could it possibly be the inverter?

cynpow,Unfortunately, Dell does not support Windows 10 on this computer. There are no Windows 10 drivers available from Dell for the n7010.  That does not mean it will not work. Without windows 10 drivers for the hardware in the system the system it may not perform as well. The memory issues you are having is more than likely not the physical memory, but Virtual Memory. Below is information to adjust the virtual memory settings in Windows 10.Increasing Virtual Memory in Windows 10Go to the Start Menu and click on Settings.Type performance.Choose Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows. In the new window, go to the Advanced tab and under the Virtual memory section, click on Change. At the bottom of the new window, check what the Recommended value is and how it compares to Currently allocated. If the current setting is significantly less than the recommended, uncheck the Automatically manage paging file size for all drives box at the top of the same windows and then click on Custom size.Enter the Recommended value in the Initial Size box, and a larger figure in the Maximum size box.Click OK to save the new settings.
