One user account has sluggish access/open file on NAS

Q: One user account has sluggish access/open file on NAS

We are using a one-month old XPS 8900, i7 with 16 GB memory, D-Link DNS-323 NAS and Office 2016. Windows 10 Pro v1607 Build 14393.351.
User account "A" is able to access and open Word/Excel files very quickly. No performance issues.
User account "B" struggles to open these files. We see various phases such as "Contacting ... NAS", "Downloading", "Processing" and eventually opens. Closing the file takes several seconds.
I chatted with Microsoft support ... they connected to view the issue and concluded it was "weird". Microsoft will not escalate the issue because the file is not directly on the computer.
As mentioned above, user account "A" works fine!!
Any ideas? Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I diabled UAC today because I wanted to delete some files. However, it didn't work so I went back and tried to click on UAC to enable it again, but I can't. The UAC window doesn't pop up. All it does is give a small flash on the screen, if you know what I mean. Help please!
I also created a new account but I couldn't access UAC either. I restarted my computer 2 times already. What do I do?
I'm on my only account, which is administrator.

Lee, welcome to Sevenforums!

Try this: SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Then try again to turn it on: User Account Control - UAC - Change Notification Settings

I added a password to my Admin account on my Windows XP desktop PC; it is the only account on the computer. When I added the password (through Control Panel - User Accounts), the system asked if I also wanted to block other users from accessing files on my computer, since even if I added a user account, they still would be able to see my files. So I said yes to the question.

Then I discovered that I could no longer access any shared folders on the desktop from my networked laptop. I deleted the password on my desktop pc, but it still won't let me access the files from my laptop. In Control Panel - User Accounts there is no option to unblock access to files. I tried my computer's help, but there was nothing there.

In Windows Explorer - Sharing, all the folders that I want to share across the network have the proper boxes checked, but they are now disabled.

This is occurring on my home system.

Does anyone know how to undo the file folder blocking?

Thanks.

A:User Account File Access

Try Setting Permissions for a File or Folder

To set the permissions for a file or folder:

Use Windows Explorer to locate the file or folder for which you want to edit the permissions.
Right-click the folder, and then click Properties.
Click the Security tab.
To add a new access control setting to the folder, click Add.
Select the users, computers, or groups that this access control setting is applied to, click Add, and then click OK.
To remove an access control setting, click Remove.
To edit the permissions for any group, select the user or group, and then use the corresponding check boxes in the Permissions pane.
Click OK to accept the settings, click Cancel to cancel any changes you have made, or click Apply to apply the changes without closing the file or folder properties.

I can't seem to simply create a second user who has no access to files/programs on the computer by default. From what I read, that's supposed to be the default behavior? When I try it, the new 'Standard user' account can see all programs and files. I haven't previously changed permissions or anything on this PC.

A:Standard User Account - File/pgm access

In the User Account - Create you should be able to use Parental controls to limit programs and file access (although I haven't had to do so myself)

You should be able to create a standard user accounts on your computer and reserve administrator permissions for your user account, you’ll have to type your account’s password whenever a standard user wants to install or access restricted programs.

After that I believe you can right click on any application and set the permissions (or disallow run)

You could also use Group Policy Editor - Quickly View Enabled Policies in Windows

If you have Windows Ultimate you could also use AppLocker - Create New Rules

Hi all. I recently formatted my drive and did a fresh (legit) reinstall of XP. I've been trying to run a very tight ship since then, among other things, doing my daily work in a limited account. I have a large number of files that I backed up from my previous (admin) account and have copied over to my newly formated drive, and which I now need to access regularly as a limited user.

Mostly this works okay, but I've found that for a lot of my files I just can't get write access to as a limited user. These are just random text and image files -- not anything significant or sensitive. They're not being used by any other process. If I switch accounts and open them as admin, then I can write to them. Otherwise not.

I noticed that after I initially copied all these files back onto my drive, they were flagged as 'read only.' I changed that in the Admin account, and now there's no 'read only' flag when I check the properties as a limited user. However, I still don't have any write permission.

Any insight would be apprecited.

Cheers,
FP.

A:limited user account file access issues

Welcome to TSG!

I suspect you need to take ownership of the files from the limited account.
First, change the limited account to a Computer Administrator account
Follow the steps in this article to take ownership of the files:
How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP

Then, change the account back to a Limited Account.

I'm trying to use the File History feature in Windows 8.1 to create backups.  When I click "File History" from the control panel, nothing happens.  No new window opens, it just stays at the Control Page.

I've tried manually going to "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\File History".

All works fine with local Administrative user profile.

Why does File History not start/open/run for the domain user account that is in the Administrators Group?

A:"File History" won't open/start for domain user profile/account

Hi,
Base on my lab machine (Windows Server 2008 R2 DC, Windows 8.1 client). either domain admin user or domain standard user, they all work fine.
What's your environment? Did this issue occur on all domain user or specific one?
In some cases, File History may conflict with the enterprise policies (like retention policy). I suggest you contact your IT admin to see if there is some other policy to limit this.

Umm...if you could access encrypted files from another user that would remove the whole point of encrypting the files to begin with.

According to the windows.microsoft.com website "Your user account prevents anyone who is using a standard account on your computer from seeing your files." My wife and I share our computer: I have an administrator account and she has a standard user account. Yet when she is logged in she can access my documents and read them via File Explorer, though she cannot delete them. This seems to contradict what Microsoft say or am I missing something? Grateful for any advice.

Since writing the above I have found that the same situation exists on the other computer that we share, but in this case she is able to delete the documents as well.

Sorry, everyone, I think I've solved this. I must have set particular sharing permissions and forgotten I'd done so.

Hi Blaume, welcome to the Ten Forums.

I am sorry but when you deleted the user account, it's gone, all its files are gone, forever. The only way to get the file back would be to restore a system image made before the account was deleted.

The built-in guest account no longer works in Windows 10. However, you can create a new Guest account by yourself:

To get to the user account you want type the following at the command prompt

cd users
cd  <username>

Whilst using my Acer laptop it crashed and went to 'startup repair'. The repair lasted roughly two hours but once it had finished and I had turned the laptop back on, the user account had become de-personalised and looked like a 'guest' account. My immediate reaction was to switch user but then it remained at the 'welcome' screen and wouldn't stop until after an hour I gave up and switched it off.

It then wouldn't get past that screen on the numerous occasions I restarted the laptop after that.

I have tried a startup repair after pressing f8 at start up and have tried loading in 'safe mode' and its other two variations and I still have the same problem. The startup repair this time detected no problems and I have now let it do a 'Windows Memory Diagnostic' check.

Any help would be greatly received. Thank you.

A:Mouse will not open any programs for one user account

I have seen this problem when registry entries for the mouse become corrupted. Some people have fixed this problem by running CCleaner, which you might like to try, though I tend to find registry cleaners rather unreliable.

Another option might be to go into the device manager and uninstall the mouse, then reboot your computer. If your mouse is a generic mouse windows will reinstall the driver.

If you have a proprietry mouse, you might need to insert the driver CD after rebooting.

Hi, I'm new here, but I hope someone can help me out.

The other day I had to access User Account Controls because I was having some problems with Itunes and when I tried to open the Configure User Account Controls panel, a blank window opened for about 10-20 seconds and then it closed on its own. Any suggestions of what might be causing it/how to fix it?

And what's the solution to this issue?

Hi all. I am using XP home and have my account only on it. I wanted to create a new account for my spouse and was able to successfully create the account, and if preferred, use a password.

However when i try to log in to the new account, the desktop wallpaper momentarily flashes in a fraction of a second and brings me back to the login. Second, third, forth and any more attempts to login have the same result.

Any ideas on what might be creating this issue an how to resolve it?
Much appreciated.

A:[SOLVED] Cannot access new user account

Try removing the account rebooting, now click start>run now type controluserpasswords2
before creating the username check and see if users must enter a username and password is checked, if so be sure to create a password for the account. on add then create the new username and follow the prompts.

we could use a ton more info. system specs, network setup, clean install or upgrade, admin user or regular, the list goes on.

I originally posted this at Seven Forums but haven't yet gotten a response. I'm wondering if the experts haven't all migrated to W10. Anyway If some could please have a look at it and possibly give some insight:

My PC at work can access the company server since this morning. Everything was fine last night. Strangely the two other user accounts on the PC still work fine (in terms of server access) its just mine that has been affected.

Did a system restore without luck. we do our own IT and not very well versed so please help me fix my profile.

Thanks.

Hi again,

As I am new to networking, I hope this isn't too noob a question. I have 4 machines on a network with a router/hub. I have various things stored on different machines, and don't really want to put them all in a central location. My question is that the way XP seems to work is that in order for one machine to log into another, each machine must have a seperate user name on each computer. Normally I foundn't find this to be a big deal, but now when you turn on the computer, you have to type a password when logging in (turning on) the machine. Before it would automatically log in that user. Is there some way to have all the permissions set for each machine but avoid this log hassle? With the exception of the kids machine, all the users would stay the same all the time. There wouldn't be a need to have so many accounts. The way I have it set up now, everything works but there are 4-5 accounts on each machine. Is there a better way?

Thanks

Hello, I hope someone can help, I booted up my PC today and it won't complete the log in process, I get to the log in, enter my password, hit enter and it just sits there with my user name and welcome with the little dots spinning around.

I have 3 other unused accounts on the PC from back in the Windows 7 days that have never been logged into, so I tried one of them and it worked fine and went through setting up the user account. All user accounts are Administrator. But I just can't access my main account. Using one of the other means that I will have to go through all the settings for my apps again and reactivating them it appears, some stuff only allows a minimum amount of activation, I really don't want to have to go down that path, this is a DAW only machine used for music production with a lot of software and literally thousands of plugins, quite possibly a lot of work if the majority require reactivating and setting up.

I do have a recent backup image with Acronis, whether or not that will work once I try to restore it who knows. But if it was possible to gain access to my login would be much prefered, so any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

This did not occur after a Windows update or anything, I have kept my PC on version 1511 of Windows 10

Thank You

[Edit] I have gone through and done chkdsk on all drives and all appears ok

Hello,

Out of the blue, one of the two user accounts on my laptop cannot access the internet. It's the admin account. I'm using another account on the same computer to get to the internet. I have a linksys wireless router and I use McAffee AV. I have made no configuration changes whatsoever.

Hello,
Recently, I have disabled UAC for some testing, and now I cannot change the settings back. My computer is running Windows 7 Home Premium, and I have only tried opening UAC in a non-administrative account (might be the problem, but I currently don't have
access to administrative privileges).

Please help and tell me what I can do to open UAC, so I can enable it again. Thanks!

I inherited a Dell XP420 Computer with Vista Operating System from my stepson Pat who could never figure out the machine.

I seem to have many problems with Vista revolving around User Account Control, Privileges, Permissions, Ownership, user names, file control and directory structure. etc.

I?ve been working around UAC problems, but there has to be a way out of this. My most recent issue:

IE has problems fully loading web pages. With IE, like several programs that I run with this computer I get messages that say I have corrupt files. I get object error warnings Chkdsk does not fix problems.

While shopping for a new car battery, with many pages open, the computer completely hung up last night. I had to kill power and reboot.

IE7 did not work, I Unloaded and IE7 would not work also. Google Chrome is fine, I have internet access. I reset all defaults.

After hours of messing around, I discovered the way to start IE is ?Run as Administrator?
Then like so many other programs I run, I get the screen Windows screen
? A Program needs your permission to continue.?

When I dumped my old files on this XP420 computer from my old computer, They resided in User ?Mike_W_old.? I had no permissions with this user, so I moved all the files to ?Pat? I renamed user/administrator Pat to Mike _W under the desktop, but the user pat did not update under the OS C:\ drive \ Users\ Pat and there is no option to rename here.

Pat was the original administrator. Vista is tel... Read more
