Custom Install with notebook without drivers?

Q: Custom Install with notebook without drivers?

Hi all,

I am trying to upgrade my Vista 32 bit to Windows 7 32 bit. Since my Vista is the home version and the win 7 I've purchased is professional, I have to do a custom install, which basically deletes all my programs and drivers. My notebook, however, didn't come with any drivers when I purchased it. All it asked me to do was make a recovery disk. So my question is, how do I find said drivers? I've downloaded a few off HP but do those require existing drivers or can I use those after the Win 7 installation? My main concern is my ATI Mobility Radeon 3200 and CCC.

Thank you for your help.

Preferred Solution: Custom Install with notebook without drivers?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I downloaded the student edition of windows 7 Home Premium, I am currently running Vista Ultimate so cannot do an upgrade and have to do a custom install.

I downloaded it fine, ran it, it opens up fine with the blue windows 7 opening screen, I select install, then select custom install. In the next window I have an empty white box which I presume is supposed to list my HD's allowing me to select where I want to install Windows 7. None of my HD's are showing up, I'm given the option to browse or scan, when I select this it gives me the message-

No device drivers were found. Make sure that the installation media contains the correct drivers, and then click OK

Any suggestions?

A:Windows 7 Custom Install Issue-No Device Drivers

Please complete your system specs if you can. Especially hard drives and whether or not they are SATA and/or in a RAID configuration.

There was an article on the net that showed how to upgrade from Win 7 Ultimate to Win 7 Home Premium. It might work in Vista's case as well. (I would give you the link but I was warned not to post it)

Maybe someone else knows the link to a guide on this site.

I've got a brand new Gateway M-6862 notebook that is giving me BSOD related to some minidump thing only when I am running Azureus 2.5, and my google searching told me a graphics driver update would help. The problem is, anytime I run any ATI installed, it immediately exits and says "Catalyst Install Manager stopped working". I heard about some project called Mobility Modder Mobility Modder - DriverHeaven.net and tried what they recommended, but no go. I have unistalled all VC 2008+ packages, uninstalled and reinstalled .net framework 3.5 all to no go. Even when I click the "Uninstall" button that comes up in the installer, it immediately exits in the same fashion. I tried uninstalling the drivers manually, but it just immediately reinstalled the old ones when it booted up, and of course the 8.8 (and 8.7) installer crashed even after I uninstalled them again and didn't reboot.

A:Can't Install any new ATI drivers... Gateway notebook

HI Dihnekis,
Welcome to the forums,

Can you please explain how you attempted to install the new driver manually? I assume you mean you went to Device Manager > Right click on the display adapter > choose update driver then browse for the new driver?

Good afternoon. I have a custom system with 64-bit Win 7 Home Premium (OEM upgrade from Win XP)
Gigabyte 965-P DS3 with Q8200 CPU @ 2.3 GHz, Award BIOS F14
PCI-E 8400GS NVIDIA card
500 GB SATA Hard Drive
Norton 360/Security Suite
Office 2007

Just recently did the BIOS, Processor, and OS upgrade so not much on the system yet at all--just Productivity, not for gaming. I went through each component and checked for newer drivers and I ran CHKDSK as well.

In trying to get some other things working, I ran into BSODs that could not be fixed without Restoring to a previous point. The first was after trying to install some new Java-based Live Meeting program...then a few days later it happened after installing Flash Player (not AIR).

I have attached the files generated after the most recent BSOD. I would appreciate any guidance on what might be contributing to the problem. I had installed Camtasia before one of the Restores and am hoping to install again but am holding off for now until I am comfortable not having to go through Restore again.Thanks.

Hi. I was wondering, what drivers would you recommend for an nVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB? Custom or standard?

I've heard the custom driver called "XTREME-G" is good for gaming, does anyone know anything more about it?

A:nVIDIA Drivers... custom or standard?

If you want to know about gaming drivers then I suggest having this thread moved to the gaming forum here at TSG. There are experts there that will be more able to answer your question. To have this thread moved please click the little triangle to the upper right and ask a moderator to please move this thread.

My answer to your post is if you are going for gaming use the custom drivers and not the standard you are looking for more performance and standard will not give it to you.

Hello everyone,

I've tried to use an old custom computer that was built for a friend's business, to be used as a server computer or something, but was never implemented fully. Recently, my home computer has been giving me hell, so my friend gave me the custom computer. It hadn't been used in a few years, but he said that it took quite a lot of money to make, so it should work fine.

First off, the font to the entire computer was really weird. I tried using ClearType, but that only helped for some of the font. The rest still is jagged and weird.

Another problem is that there is no video driver, and it says in the device manager that it is a Video Controller (VGA Compatible). I've tried to download it from cnet, but it's not letting me.

Windows XP Professional by the way.

I'm not exactly sure how to find out what the parts of the CPU are, if anyone could point me in the right direction for these problems, I would appreciate it very much. Also, sorry if I'm missing information, I'm not exactly sure what I'm supposed to include.

A:Many problems with a custom computer (font, drivers)

The term VGA Compatible Video Controller simply means Windows does not know what the video is and has no driver for it, it doesn't identify it in any way.I suggest install SIW on the system and run it to identify what parts are being used in the system, once that is known you or we can locate the drivers you'll need:http://www.gtopala.com/

I have an ATI Radeon HD3650 AGP series card in my PC & it plays most games great, but the only thing is the support for drivers.
I've tried quite a few & there's always a problem, so i currently have a hot-fix installed.

Anyone know of any custom drivers for this card ?

A:Anyone know of any good custom drivers for ATI Radeon HD 3650 AGP?

You probably won't find any new drivers for AGP, especially since you didn't mention OS type. If you still have the CD that came with your card that may be the best you can do, sorry.

I've been having blue screens for quite some time. I even formatted my computer 3 days ago and so far already got 2 blue screens.
I am not sure what's going on, I updated all my drivers and make sure everything is up to date.

And for some reason my minidumps aren't recording either, luckily I took a pic of it.

On my "Errors.rar" file there's Errors.evtx, from administrative events, not sure if will be also useful but I hope so.

Thank you for the support.

I followed the steps and all my settings, software, and everything is gone! I thought it was suppose to keep everything that way it was.

Do I have to reinstall everything? Also, I can't read my windows key number at the bottom of my computer since it became worn out. Is there anyway to obtain this or am I pretty much screwed now?

A:Accidentally did custom install instead of repair install

Hello Ericwoo,

It sounds like you selected to do a "custom" install instead of an "upgrade" install. A custom install will wipe everything.

If that is the case, and you don't have your key written down somewhere safe, then yeah you're pretty much SOL.

Hi I am new to the forums. I hope you fine people can give me some guidance as I don't know what I'm doing! So I bought a desktop that a guy built (who when I called to inform him of the problem won't return my calls) and apparently he didn't download the drivers for the hard drive from what I can tell. When I go in to device mgr there is no list of network adapters, ethernet nowhere to be found, and has yellow ! on other devices - mult audio controller, SM Bus Controller (what is that?). I have already solved the problem but I was still wondering if others have experienced the same... On the latest drivers, Window 7 text looks like crap... No amount of tweaking could fix it... The built in custom display could not create my native resolution adequately, neither could Rivatuner.. I would make the custom resolution (Samsung 203B native 1400X1050) and apply it but everything would become even worse and my monitor still gave me the "Not native resolution" warning every time I turned my monitor back on.... Everything looked fine without dedicated video card but once I installed my graphics card (Asus EN9600GT OC Edition) and the latest drivers, things went ugly and the control panel could not create custom resolution properly... after messing with it a bit I gave in and tried a few different newer drivers to no avail, until I dropped back to NVIDIA DRIVERS 186.18 WHQL which also came with the older Nvidia control panel... Now everything works like a charm but I wonder if anyone else has had similar experience?

A:Blurry text? Forceware Drivers? Nvidia custom display.

On a side note windows experience index dropped from 7.0 to 6.8 with the driver downgrade

After a bit of research I found that I indeed am under underattack from at least a rootkit scvhost. I didn't understand what was happening but I had given the firewall blocks however it turned out I was being hijacked. I don't want to do any more damage most of the programs running I didn't even have on my computer before this. It must have access to my Asus suite which gives you the ability to change the settings of the motherboard. When I am on Windows it's installing driver hard ware(maybe from the changed bios settings) It changed all my drives to hotplugs and I am still not comfortable with the version numbers of the bios . If I gave it enough permission with the firewall changes and being able to change bios should I be worried about the amount of time I am in the system or just do safe mode?

Hi, I have recently made a custom pc. I don't know how to get my current windows installation onto it without it deactivating or me having to pay. Any help would be appreciated

A:Install on Custom PC?

What is your current Windows installation? You need a retail license to transfer Windows from one PC to another. If you upgraded from a retail Windows 7/8/8.1 on the old PC, then you need to remove the Windows operating system from the old PC, activate the Windows 7/8/8.1 on the new PC and then upgrade to Windows 10.

What I have done when I wanted to keep all my programs and settings is: I have installed my Windows 7 on the new PC, activated it via phone activation, captured the genuineticket.xml file using gatherosstate.exe found in the sources directory of the Windows 10 install media. Copied genuineticket.xml file to a USB flash drive.

Moved the SSD containing Windows 10 from my old PC to new PC, and then copied the genuineticket.xml file into the correct folder in Windows 10 on the SSD in the new computer to activate it.

I live with someone who's been trying to get a custom PC working since he put it together around Christmas, but Windows XP SP2 seems to refuse to work correctly. The couple of times it did install, certain things wouldn't work like installing the motherboard's audio drivers. Now most of the time it just doesn't install, it restarts the computer at random spots throughout the installation process. Since Christmas we've tried three motherboards (same model), two XP SP2 disks, and two hard drives, but nothing seems to change.

These are the parts he's using:
Corsair XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800

I just finished my i3 build and am trying to get my Windows 7 Home Premium to install and am not having much success.

First of all, I want to note that I am trying to install from an external DVD-Drive via USB because it's extremely hard to get the Drives out of the old Dell computer. I either have to order new ones, or literally break that case.

Anyways, I've been messing with BIOS settings (mostly SATA config and USB legacy settings) and what not, but no matter what I try (seemingly) I get one of two things to occur:

1) The 'expanding Windows files' sticks on 0%
2) I get the 'Windows Cannot Install Required Files Error'

I'm back on default BIOS settings and am going to listen to you guys, because what ever I do doesn't work

Thanks for all the help in advance!

I have a Sony Viao model PCG-FRV26 notebook and recently had an incident when water fell out of a large mug and spilled on the computer. It ceased working for about a month altogether. Then when it finally worked after almost giving in to sending it to a shop. It would run with a lot of problems and the startup time was incredibly long. I figured it had driver/software problems so i picked up a copy of win xp pro and reinstalled windows. it worked great with the exception of a loss of speed, the integrated video adapter refuses to play any games, and the DVD drive reads only as a cd drive. I can understand that there is a connection to the water damage in this insance but there must be some thing i can do to restore what i can without sending it in. i visited the manufacturer of the dvd drive, qsi, and they claim to have a driver thats perfect but when i downloaded it it did nothing. I need some sujestions on what i might need to do. Working drivers and any hardware solutions would be ahuge help. Thanks.

Hello! Welcome to TechSpot!

I have a customer with a dell laptop that did the samething.
Most laptops are not that hard to take a part.
I had her pull the battery and any panels on the bottom, then
pull the top keyboard panel. Using compressed air to blow water/liquid
out as best as possible. Then leave it to dry naturally, 1 1/2wks.
Her system survived.

In your case, since you've given your laptop suffecient time to dry out.
I would have you disasemble the same way (as far down as you can).
Pull the ram, video, dvd, hdd, cpu etc. if you can.
Get some contact cleaner and canned air, comes in an aerosol can.
You'll want to use them simultainiously to clean and dry all surfaces and contacts.

This can and does work, however on a dificulty scale of 1 to 10,
10=hardest, this is an 8 1/2.
The fall back failure is any short outs your system got at the time of spill,
that may have damaged some thing. Water is not the greatest conductor
but it can short circut things.

I have installed audioSP23455, Conextant Audio Driver for Windows XP, from Compaq's site. It is the only driver listed when I search for Presario 2596US notebook. The driver does not list the 2596 as an applicable model...

Where can I get a different audio driver?

Wireless. The wireless connect/disconnect button and light do not function. I have installed broadcomwlanSP27942, Broadcom WLAN Network Adapers Driver for Windows XP, from Compaq's site. I am able to detect and connect to my wireless router, but I would like the disconnect button to function.

Hi: What drivers do you need? Your notebook's support page has a W7 driver section.  I don't see anything missing. http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-14-ac100-Notebook-PC-series/8499318/model/8960052

Good night everyone!

Well, I'm here trying to dink around in getting a custom image of Windows 8 done. I want to do this as I know later on this year and next year probably, the amount of people asking to upgrade or to do a clean reinstall on an OEM PC will go up. Now, I generally install Windows, pin things to Start, install Decor8; Windows Essentials 2012; configure the Desktop UI so it looks a tad cleaner, download and install updates, install some metro apps, sometimes Office or Photoshop, activate everything properly, and then defrag and do the performance enhancing here and there. Overall, this takes time, about maybe a couple of days or maybe three as I do several passes of wiping the disk down to destroy every literal bit of data (after user data is backed up of course) and a couple of thorough reformats; that takes about 16ish hours. That, along with the software part, along with physically cleaning the PC so EVERYTHING is nice and squeaky clean when I'm done with it.

So that leads me up to here. I bloody need to make customized system images to deploy quicker. I know with Windows 7, there was sysprep that was used to audit the image and then you boot into a WinPE environment to capture the install.wim image. I'm wondering if there is a better way to do that and/or quicker and/or easier way. I don't know if sysprep is used in Windows 8, I think recimg is used over that... But that is used to make a refresh image I believe.

Also, there was the WAIK deployment kit... Read more

I've heard that you dont get the same performance when you do an upgrade. Also i dont have anything to backup on my computer.

A:upgrade or custom install, which one should I do.

Definitely clean install. It is much safer, because any problems you had in your last OS will not be transferred over.
