Custom Install with notebook without drivers?

Q: Custom Install with notebook without drivers?

Hi all,

I am trying to upgrade my Vista 32 bit to Windows 7 32 bit. Since my Vista is the home version and the win 7 I've purchased is professional, I have to do a custom install, which basically deletes all my programs and drivers. My notebook, however, didn't come with any drivers when I purchased it. All it asked me to do was make a recovery disk. So my question is, how do I find said drivers? I've downloaded a few off HP but do those require existing drivers or can I use those after the Win 7 installation? My main concern is my ATI Mobility Radeon 3200 and CCC.

Thank you for your help.

Preferred Solution: Custom Install with notebook without drivers?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I downloaded the student edition of windows 7 Home Premium, I am currently running Vista Ultimate so cannot do an upgrade and have to do a custom install.

I downloaded it fine, ran it, it opens up fine with the blue windows 7 opening screen, I select install, then select custom install. In the next window I have an empty white box which I presume is supposed to list my HD's allowing me to select where I want to install Windows 7. None of my HD's are showing up, I'm given the option to browse or scan, when I select this it gives me the message-

No device drivers were found. Make sure that the installation media contains the correct drivers, and then click OK

Any suggestions?

A:Windows 7 Custom Install Issue-No Device Drivers

Please complete your system specs if you can. Especially hard drives and whether or not they are SATA and/or in a RAID configuration.

There was an article on the net that showed how to upgrade from Win 7 Ultimate to Win 7 Home Premium. It might work in Vista's case as well. (I would give you the link but I was warned not to post it)

Maybe someone else knows the link to a guide on this site.

I've got a brand new Gateway M-6862 notebook that is giving me BSOD related to some minidump thing only when I am running Azureus 2.5, and my google searching told me a graphics driver update would help. The problem is, anytime I run any ATI installed, it immediately exits and says "Catalyst Install Manager stopped working". I heard about some project called Mobility Modder Mobility Modder - DriverHeaven.net and tried what they recommended, but no go. I have unistalled all VC 2008+ packages, uninstalled and reinstalled .net framework 3.5 all to no go. Even when I click the "Uninstall" button that comes up in the installer, it immediately exits in the same fashion. I tried uninstalling the drivers manually, but it just immediately reinstalled the old ones when it booted up, and of course the 8.8 (and 8.7) installer crashed even after I uninstalled them again and didn't reboot.

A:Can't Install any new ATI drivers... Gateway notebook

HI Dihnekis,
Welcome to the forums,

Can you please explain how you attempted to install the new driver manually? I assume you mean you went to Device Manager > Right click on the display adapter > choose update driver then browse for the new driver?

There is no dedicated Windows 8 Driver for the ATI Mobility X300/X600/X1300/X1400 graphics cards but I have documented that the Windows Vista Driver R153383.exe will install and work reliably in Microsoft Windows8.
The steps for installation are listed below:

Download the R153383.exe drvier from: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails?driverId=R153383 and extract the compressed files, then cancel the automatic installation of the driver (It crashed out on me when I ran the install)
From The Style UI interface, move the mouse pointer to the lower left corner, and Right Click, select Device Manager from the pop-up menu.
Click the arrow next to Display Adapter, Microsoft Basic Display should be listed.
Right Click the Microsoft Basic Display and click Update Driver, then select Browse My Computer ...., then Click Let Me Pick From a List ....
Click the HAVE DISK Button in the Install from Disk Window, browse to the C:\Dell\Drivers\R153383\Packages\Driver\Display\LH_INF folder and click CL_45540.inf then Click Open and OK to install the driver.

I have completed this process on both an Inspiron E1505/6400 and Inspiron 6000 and both systems are working fine, even power management seems to function well.

A:How to install Windows 8 video/graphics drivers for an Inspiron 6000/6400/E1505/8600/9100/9200/9300/9400/E1705 Latitude D610/D810 or Inspiron XPS notebook system

Can you get a multiple display with a projector? I was able to get the ATI Mobility x300 as the display adapter, but I can only get one display at a time. With XP, I could see my laptop screen duplicated on a projector and I would like to be able to do the same under Windows 8.
When I check the display with the Control Panel, it allows for only one display and the monitor is a generic PnP monitor and the adapter is the Microsoft Basic Display driver.
I didn't use the method that you suggested to get the X300 adapter.
Any suggestions?
Thank you.

Good afternoon. I have a custom system with 64-bit Win 7 Home Premium (OEM upgrade from Win XP)
Gigabyte 965-P DS3 with Q8200 CPU @ 2.3 GHz, Award BIOS F14
PCI-E 8400GS NVIDIA card
500 GB SATA Hard Drive
Norton 360/Security Suite
Office 2007

Just recently did the BIOS, Processor, and OS upgrade so not much on the system yet at all--just Productivity, not for gaming. I went through each component and checked for newer drivers and I ran CHKDSK as well.

In trying to get some other things working, I ran into BSODs that could not be fixed without Restoring to a previous point. The first was after trying to install some new Java-based Live Meeting program...then a few days later it happened after installing Flash Player (not AIR).

I have attached the files generated after the most recent BSOD. I would appreciate any guidance on what might be contributing to the problem. I had installed Camtasia before one of the Restores and am hoping to install again but am holding off for now until I am comfortable not having to go through Restore again.Thanks.

Hi. I was wondering, what drivers would you recommend for an nVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB? Custom or standard?

I've heard the custom driver called "XTREME-G" is good for gaming, does anyone know anything more about it?

A:nVIDIA Drivers... custom or standard?

If you want to know about gaming drivers then I suggest having this thread moved to the gaming forum here at TSG. There are experts there that will be more able to answer your question. To have this thread moved please click the little triangle to the upper right and ask a moderator to please move this thread.

My answer to your post is if you are going for gaming use the custom drivers and not the standard you are looking for more performance and standard will not give it to you.

Hello everyone,

I've tried to use an old custom computer that was built for a friend's business, to be used as a server computer or something, but was never implemented fully. Recently, my home computer has been giving me hell, so my friend gave me the custom computer. It hadn't been used in a few years, but he said that it took quite a lot of money to make, so it should work fine.

First off, the font to the entire computer was really weird. I tried using ClearType, but that only helped for some of the font. The rest still is jagged and weird.

Another problem is that there is no video driver, and it says in the device manager that it is a Video Controller (VGA Compatible). I've tried to download it from cnet, but it's not letting me.

Windows XP Professional by the way.

I'm not exactly sure how to find out what the parts of the CPU are, if anyone could point me in the right direction for these problems, I would appreciate it very much. Also, sorry if I'm missing information, I'm not exactly sure what I'm supposed to include.

A:Many problems with a custom computer (font, drivers)

The term VGA Compatible Video Controller simply means Windows does not know what the video is and has no driver for it, it doesn't identify it in any way.I suggest install SIW on the system and run it to identify what parts are being used in the system, once that is known you or we can locate the drivers you'll need:http://www.gtopala.com/

Hi I am new to the forums. I hope you fine people can give me some guidance as I don't know what I'm doing! So I bought a desktop that a guy built (who when I called to inform him of the problem won't return my calls) and apparently he didn't download the drivers for the hard drive from what I can tell. When I go in to device mgr there is no list of network adapters, ethernet nowhere to be found, and has yellow ! on other devices - mult audio controller, SM Bus Controller (what is that?). No sound is the least of my worries right now - I've been at this for days & I'm going to go insane if I can't figure this out. I have no $ to take it somewhere. I haven't used a computer with a floppy drive in over 10 years so I don't have any of those. A friend let me borrow their laptop for a few hours while he's at work to try & help, that is how I'm here now. Does that sound like the problem to you? When I go into System it says Computer: AMD Athlon, its running XP, nVIDIA nForce2 black thing on motherboard (thats the pu?), the writing on the motherboard, which is red not green, says M7NCG 400 VER. 7.2 on it. I obviously can't connect to the internet & I've tried to do the "work offline" thing by letting guests on my comp while in safe mode but can't get a .net passport & the thing won't recognize my printer so I couldn't get info from that (I'm stuck there now btw). I have already solved the problem but I was still wondering if others have experienced the same... On the latest drivers, Window 7 text looks like crap... No amount of tweaking could fix it... The built in custom display could not create my native resolution adequately, neither could Rivatuner.. I would make the custom resolution (Samsung 203B native 1400X1050) and apply it but everything would become even worse and my monitor still gave me the "Not native resolution" warning every time I turned my monitor back on.... Everything looked fine without dedicated video card but once I installed my graphics card (Asus EN9600GT OC Edition) and the latest drivers, things went ugly and the control panel could not create custom resolution properly... after messing with it a bit I gave in and tried a few different newer drivers to no avail, until I dropped back to NVIDIA DRIVERS 186.18 WHQL which also came with the older Nvidia control panel... Now everything works like a charm but I wonder if anyone else has had similar experience?

I live with someone who's been trying to get a custom PC working since he put it together around Christmas, but Windows XP SP2 seems to refuse to work correctly. The couple of times it did install, certain things wouldn't work like installing the motherboard's audio drivers. Now most of the time it just doesn't install, it restarts the computer at random spots throughout the installation process. Since Christmas we've tried three motherboards (same model), two XP SP2 disks, and two hard drives, but nothing seems to change.

These are the parts he's using:
Corsair XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800

Hi, I have recently made a custom pc. I don't know how to get my current windows installation onto it without it deactivating or me having to pay. Any help would be appreciated

A:Install on Custom PC?

What is your current Windows installation? You need a retail license to transfer Windows from one PC to another. If you upgraded from a retail Windows 7/8/8.1 on the old PC, then you need to remove the Windows operating system from the old PC, activate the Windows 7/8/8.1 on the new PC and then upgrade to Windows 10.

What I have done when I wanted to keep all my programs and settings is: I have installed my Windows 7 on the new PC, activated it via phone activation, captured the genuineticket.xml file using gatherosstate.exe found in the sources directory of the Windows 10 install media. Copied genuineticket.xml file to a USB flash drive.

Moved the SSD containing Windows 10 from my old PC to new PC, and then copied the genuineticket.xml file into the correct folder in Windows 10 on the SSD in the new computer to activate it.

I just finished my i3 build and am trying to get my Windows 7 Home Premium to install and am not having much success.

First of all, I want to note that I am trying to install from an external DVD-Drive via USB because it's extremely hard to get the Drives out of the old Dell computer. I either have to order new ones, or literally break that case.

Anyways, I've been messing with BIOS settings (mostly SATA config and USB legacy settings) and what not, but no matter what I try (seemingly) I get one of two things to occur:

1) The 'expanding Windows files' sticks on 0%
2) I get the 'Windows Cannot Install Required Files Error'

I'm back on default BIOS settings and am going to listen to you guys, because what ever I do doesn't work

Thanks for all the help in advance!

Nice theme ! After downloading and extracting, you got these files, isn't it ?

What is your win 7 version ? If it is 32 bit one, select the second folder. Or if it is 64 bit, select the first folder. Opening either filder, you will get two files like

Copy and paste these two only in C:\windows\resources\themes.

I haven't seen this described elsewhere, and I'm out of ideas.

Win7 Ultimate Edition bought on DVD from amazon.co.uk

I'm installing Win 7 Ultimate on my computer using Custom Install. Formatted 500GB HDD (7200 RPM) using Win 7 installer (previous install of WinXP was on a partitioned drive - current one is using a single partition).

The installer follows the normal pattern. After choosing the partitioned space to install on (there is only one primary, and one system that Win7 setup), it begins copying Win7 files, and expands them successfully. It then continues by installing, and restarts at the point where it should.

On restart I let it continue to load up win7 to finish installation. Win7 (after saying "Setup is updating registry settings"), it opens the Install Windows window and "Completing Installation" is bolded. After sometime it restarts yet again (without warning this time, but from videos this seesm to be normal). Before it loads up Win7 again it tells me that Windows shut down unexpectedly and asks me whether I want to start Windows Normally or in Safe Mode.

If I start Win7 in safe mode it tells me that installation cannot be continued. If I start it normally it brings up the following error message:

"The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered and unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the computer, then restart the installation."

Down side is system is in limbo. You never know if the system is using an old value imported from win.old or a new one. If old had problems you can import them.

Avast Free/Pro/IS/AP?

What modules you install?

I use Avast Free & IS.

File Shield
Web Shield

File Shield
Web Shield
Safe Zone

I use default settings.
PUP enabled & HTTPS under WebShield disabled.

A:Avast Custom Install

File Shield is enough, do not install webshield also you do not need many of bundled tools with it. They use those tool to advertise their products.
In IS installation, you again do not need webshield. Webshields are useless in my opinion. You can make some research about it on google.
Other features I never tried.

Hi, quick question. I got the OS vista installed on one partition and two other partitions for backup and stuff. No OS files in there I believe.

Do i have to delete all partitions or just the one that contains the old vista OS to upgrade? I can't do a direct upgrade because I want to go from 32bit to 64bit, and also from home premium vista to 7 profressional.

Or do I have to delete all partitions? I got a large backup up to do...probably 4 hours if I have to delete all partitions.

Also how do I upgrade to 64bit? When I put in the 64bit CD it says you can't upgrade...you have to use the 32bit? Am I suppose to use the 32bit cd and it will let me pick 64 bit later on? Or it won't work because of the partitions?

A:Custom Install, and Partition

You should do a *almost* clean install. You don't have to format your entire disk, but you do have to format that system partition. Even though your other files shouldn't be touched, I would back them up anyway.

Follow this tutorial, but instead of formatting your entire hard drive, just format the partition that Vista was located on.

Clean Install Windows 7

I believe that should work properly. If it doesn't, you can always do a real clean install after backing up all of your files on those other partitions. If you need a decent partition manager Partition Wizard is free and works well.

As far as your worries about the "upgrade" portion, you don't have to worry about this. As long as you wait until the operating system is installed to enter your cd key you can perform a clean installation (on a formated partition).

Hello All,
I am needing a little help. BleepingComputer was in my Top Dogs folder in favorites, so I know you all can help.
The problem is setting up XP. I have so many tweaks, hacks, and settings to make my system is never secured from browsing the net before I am done tweaking. I want to finish all my configurations before I even go on the net, but I cant because I have one computer and it takes a couple weeks to finish all this.
I am wondering if I can create another partition and somehow create an install there also, in addition to the install I will be using to surf the net with. Somehow switch between the two until I am finished tweaking. Then image the good install and use it for clean installs.
Or I have another 10GB hard drive I can install also. Can I switch between the 2 drives in the bios (choose which is boot drive), until I get done. Image that install, then put it on my 80GB cuda?

Thank you kindly

Good night everyone!

Well, I'm here trying to dink around in getting a custom image of Windows 8 done. I want to do this as I know later on this year and next year probably, the amount of people asking to upgrade or to do a clean reinstall on an OEM PC will go up. Now, I generally install Windows, pin things to Start, install Decor8; Windows Essentials 2012; configure the Desktop UI so it looks a tad cleaner, download and install updates, install some metro apps, sometimes Office or Photoshop, activate everything properly, and then defrag and do the performance enhancing here and there. Overall, this takes time, about maybe a couple of days or maybe three as I do several passes of wiping the disk down to destroy every literal bit of data (after user data is backed up of course) and a couple of thorough reformats; that takes about 16ish hours. That, along with the software part, along with physically cleaning the PC so EVERYTHING is nice and squeaky clean when I'm done with it.

So that leads me up to here. I bloody need to make customized system images to deploy quicker. I know with Windows 7, there was sysprep that was used to audit the image and then you boot into a WinPE environment to capture the install.wim image. I'm wondering if there is a better way to do that and/or quicker and/or easier way. I don't know if sysprep is used in Windows 8, I think recimg is used over that... But that is used to make a refresh image I believe.

Also, there was the WAIK deployment kit... Read more

I did a custom install from vista to 7(32 bit) today.

I deleted all old restore points through the space management, however, the partition reads a still mostly full. There is only 1.8gb out of 8.3 available. When I access the folder, there is nothing in there, even if I show hidden files.

I believe it is remnants of my old vista recovery drive, which I did not erase prior to my upgrade and was always equally full to what it is now.

How would I go about eliminating these files now so I can backup my new OS installation?

A:D Drive after Custom Install

Im figuring that the D drive is nother partion that Windows is not installed, but had system restore enabled while running Vista? If there is nothing on the D drive you want/need you could format it.

If system protection is enabled for D disable it first.

Computer> Right click on D> Format
Or via the disk management tool. Start, type DISK, click "Create and format hard disks"

I have a .scr file that I am trying to install, which allegedly I am supposed to be able to just right click and click install that way. However, the install option is not showing up when I do this. Other people have confirmed that the file works and can be installed for windows 7, as well as have the install option appear, but why might I not be able to? Any help is appreciated, and thanks.

A:Can't install custom screensaver

Hello Manick,

Right click on the .scr file, click on Properties, General tab, and on the Unblock button towards the bottom if there. If not, then the file is already unblocked.

Next, you may be able to just copy the file into the C:\Windows\System32 folder for you to be able to select to use it in the Screen Saver Settings window. If the .scr file is not Windows 7 compatible, then this will not work either.

Hope this helps,

Does anyone know how to install windows so that it installs with custom settings so that it installs with chrome and steam already on windows, for example my pc boots straight into Steam Big Picture it doesnt even display a desktop after logon, how do i make this happen from the install instead of having to install chrome and steam and edit the registry on every pc?

A:Custom install windows

Hello and welcome Jake mate what you are asking is for those apps to be bundled with the OS? If so mate I think you are probably looking at no you can't.

Just out of interest are you installing on new drives or the old one? One option would be to clone the drive but if the OS is an OEM then you will only be able to use the new drive in that one machine / same motherboard.

You might be able to do that I suppose on a different machine / motherboard if the version is a retail one but I am just guessing there.
