This is a General question regarding the end of support for XP. I realise at the end date the computer should be backed up in case you have to format the disc at any time after the end of the support period.

My question is does the built in Windows back up in XP when backing up the system include the installed updates? Or is it best to use third party software to do this.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

I believe Windows just backs up your personal files and won't do the entire OS. You'll need a 3rd party program to do the entire HDD.

Also you really should think about upgrading to Windows 7. Staying on XP after the end support date is not recommended as you will lose security updates from Microsoft as well as patches.

Hi All, I own and operate a computer repair shop and I am always ending up on sevenforums finding answers to the many varied problems I encounter. So thank you to all the information that you post here, and all the free help you offer people.

I want to know how you learn to do what you guys do? I would love my staff to have the skills that you guys do. Where do you learn what you know? How to do a hole system diagnostics just like the professionals do i mean what is what they do when you take it to a computer repair shop when thye say its a free system diagnostic?

Also, how do i do a computer optimizing,firewall optimizing and a broadband optimizing.

i currently have a dell Inspiron 5558 laptop for over an year now but the screen stop working over 6 months ago, i looked up the warranty information at the time of screen stopped working and was re-assured that it showed February 18, 2017 therefore i did not consider that it is very urgent to call tech support since i have other laptops. today when i call the support service, i was informed that product was not registered and i have to pay $233 to replace the LCD screen, they still argued that dell warranty website showed the correct information but when i looked it up, the website still displays the same.  did anyone else encounter this issue??

I keep receiving calls from fake MICROSOFT Tech support with various telephone numbers. Strange, they do not show up in my phone on line logs. They wanted me to go to FASTSUPPORT\763721586 ( do not use  these numbers). It is a company  called FASTSUPPORT.com. they also give you a complaint department where you can enter the number that you feel is causing you problems, the number of the LOGMEINRESCUE type remote access code. of course it is clear to them that you are suspicious and they will get rid of the  phone operator who didn't succeed. So do not bother to leave any complaint.

I have just sent a thinkpad back for repair for the first time in over 20 years of owning  Thinkpad.  I have had 8 thinkpad  series laptops in my time as well as a few desktops and now lenovo phones. I am absolutely horrified with the diabolical Thinkpad support. This is meant to be business level support. I feel like I am phoning up Curry's.  Laptop sent back with hard disk in it and I am being told now that it "turned up without a hard disk in it". Now undercurrent of me lying. Original problem had not been assessed and I still don't have my laptop back after 3 weeks. Customer service agents just tell you anything they want to get you off the phone. I suppose all things come to an end but my loyalty to the Thinkpad brand is probably over now.  I am sure I am not the first. Has anyone else come across this?

We are Dell resellers and had placed an order for 43 Laptops - Dell Latitude 3560 with Dell on 13th June, 2016. We delivered them to our customer on Friday 17th June, 2016. On Monday 20th June we discovered that all the Laptops are faulty and are not functioning properly. They have not been able to use a single system due to touchpad issues in the entire lot
We have made innumerable calls Dell to resolve the problem, but the team is unable to identify and rectify the problem. 
We have spoken to our partner account manager, regional account manager, Service Specialist and Escalation Team, requesting them to provide us with a solution at the earliest as their work is getting hampered. Our customer has to deploy the same by 1st July however they do not have any Dell Laptops functioning correctly.  
How do we escalate this to the Dell management and get a replacement ASAP

I paid for 3 years of support and accidental damage in home support. Together, it cost around $400 on my new XPS laptop. Afew months after I bought XPS 15 9560, I pulled out the charging cord, and a round piece of plastic that was inside the port came out too.
I called technical support at 5 pm EST, and received someone in Southern India. I gave them my information, and they confirmed that I had service. They then fought with me for 15 minutes, telling me I could NOT have any in home service. The representative, who kept calling me by my first name (no respect)  said I had to send my laptop to a depot in Texas for them to identify the issue. Finally, after I insisted, the representative, S. Sirya Kiran, FINALLY allowed me to get in home support IF I sent him photos of the damage. I did. Finally, I received an email telling me to select a date for service, which I did, 12/18/17 between 9 am and 1:00 pm .
I took time off and waited. No one came by 11:30, or called. So I contacted World Wide Tech Services. They then told me they didn't have enough techs to handle my area, so they were NOT coming. I asked why no one gave me the courtesy of a phone call and they had no answer. They said a new company, Unisys, would contact me. (I doubt they ever will.)
Is this what Dell gives people for their money as far as support and accidental damage in home service for $400? This is an outrage.

Started about a month ago - pops up over and over and over and over - about every five minutes or less.  I've got a Dell Studio XPS with Windows 7 Professional.  Another forum said to just uninstall Dell Support Center (Support Center Software) - but when I try to uninstall it - THE SAME STUPID WINDOW POPS UP ASKING ME TO INSERT THE SOFTWARE.  I tried doing a Browse and it's looking for DSC20.msi.  I haven't managed to find it yet.  I have at least found \Program Files(x86)\Dell Support Center but there's so many sub-directories...
I shouldn't have to be jumping through so many hoops just to uninstall a program.  This is driving me crazy and I haven't found an answer online yet.

When I installed Win8 on one computer I need a H.P. printer driver. So I went to H.P. support/download did not find the needed driver so I called their Tech. support. A friendly support guy looked at my system and told me my copy of Microsoft Win8 bought at Best Buy was not a legit copy, also my system had been infected and they needed to remove my Win8 clean my system and reinstall Win8. made me a deal of a reduced price of $250US I knew this was not right so I begged them good buy went to Best Buy where I have good friends in the Geek Squad. they got the needed driver and printer works fine.
Today my Netgear routher died, called Netgear to get my lifetime warranty. This also was a support in India guy said it would cost $39US to make sure it was the router I said thanks but no thanks. Took my old Netgear router back to Best Bye where I bought it three years ago and they gave me a new Netgear router. I needed setup help so called Netger as new user also in India guy was friendly looked at my system and helped me get it setup. Then he informed me my computer was under attack and my files were being read he could fix my system and protect my files for the small sum of just $85US. Well I was using a small backup H.P. computer on the Net. hardwired and it was almost never used. So I knew it was a India Tech. support scam again.

Some how my old friend managed to upgrade my PC from Windows XP to Windows 7 with that chipset driver CD I gave him. I don't know how he did it. I would ask him but he moved to Germany. Anyway I've heard you can run the setup with Windwos Vista compatiblity mode but I don't know if it is safe. Anyone know?

I have a Thinkpad T450s and it is just over a year old. It still has 3 more years of warranty. Recently the lenovo solution center gave an critical error for the HDD (Read test failure) and I submitted an online request reporting it. Without even sending me an email or contacting me, they sent me a new part and gave me zero information about it. Apparently every other person can replace a HDD now! I have created 3 more cases calling their tech support to send the laptop for a depo repair. Everytime the request is rejected 'at the vendor' according to the customer care. Neither the customer care people or tech support can tell me why. Every time they create a new case, tell me I will receive a depo bag nect day, and I dont receive anything, have to call depo customer care and on hold for minimum 40 minutes, only to hear that the case has been rejected they dont know why.One tech support told me now I have to send the new part back before creating a new case, otherwise it will be rejected again. but he does not know how I can send the new part back. The return label sent to me was for the faulty HDD.Can anyone help? What is the point of paying for warranty if I receive this type of service?

After having troubles to update AVG 2013, I uninstalled-imstalled-uninstalled it and tried both with Avira and currently Microsoft essentials. After that, I have had anykind of troubles as generel alleatorilly slowness, crashing PC at tyring to close programs, unusefullness of upper right usual three butons (being necessary to go to task administrator), unfilling of desk icons, Revo charging extremely slow, etc. The last troublle (this is not new) that I cannot update net work frame and it appears a windows asking me for looking for a path (the file they need is in C:\ but in a different chain that proposed by them [I cannot fix it]).

Cookiegal, a wonderful person and most acquainted people has been helping me with all types of fixing, cleaning, etc., but I think these troubles above should be asked here.

Emachine, I have two for my kids. It is common for the psu to blow these mobo's they are 4 years old. The first I am rebuilding because it blew out. My son's I am replacing the psu before this happens. I put in a thermaltake 430w. It is a little bigger size than the one I pulled however it does fit. The rear fan has some room against my dvd player but not as much as the old one.1- Is this a major problem? 2-Should I go with the kind where you only plug in the wires you need so as to leave more open space when I replace the one I'm rebuilding for my daughter?

My PC Dell Aurora R4 won't update properly due to it not being on the list of windows 10  creator supported drivers PC from dell. Does anyone one know if dell is going to correct this matter.
This is urgent as this leaves me as a customer vulnerable, due to the W10 System of queuing downloads and there is a security one that is waiting.
I have checked directly with Microsoft Technicians and they confirm this is the issue "No Driver support for Aurora R4 Listed, W10  Creators edition. Can dell Update an then inform us a the machines cost a pretty penny and are meant to be future proofed with drivers even without a warranty. Thank you. hello to everyone!!

im working as a tech support agent for one of the biggest ISP in the US.. its a good paying job and also very challenging.. i use to troubleshoot internet connection issues for residential accounts (1 pc only) and for all other issues that i get, i browse for similar issues on the forums of this site.. well, most of them came pretty handy (esp for the security forums).. now, i got transferred to the networking department and im in a total loss!! i can do simple troubleshooting and install assists for new networking users but i really need help in issues like:
1. remote access/ port forwarding
2. invalid IP addresses on the wireless devices
3. file and printer sharing
i was browsing through all the topics but i cant find any.. if there is someone out there who can help me with this issue and give me some pointers on how i am going to do this in an easier way.. i would really appreciate any assistance..

Dell Support "Assist" just ran without giving me an option to stop, pause, or control in anyway.  It was using nearly all computer resources (I could barely save the word document I had open at the time).  This isn't "assist" more like computer take over.

How can I control the S. "Assist"?  How can I adjust the time between it's runs (currently it looks like monthly)?  After finishing it's scan or whatever it finally closed (cuz it wouldn't close the 20 times or so I clicked the "X").  I then opened it, looking for some results of the scan, and found none.  How can I view results?

Right now, seems like worthless bloatware.

Also, there is not a [New Post] button on the Laptop Forum (at least for me).

I think the revamped Support Assistant is brilliant - especially for drivers where it checks your PC, rather than give you a list of driver updates for your model, as the old website-based Driver Update checker did. It has an "Add a device" facility but it doesn't find my HP DCP_J315W printer, connected via wireless. Does Support Assistant support printers? edited 08:07: typo

I did a "Help & Support" search for "Superfetch" and came up with something to do with IE. Did a search for "Prefetch" and got a correct answer.
However, in "services" (services.msc), there is no "Prefetch" service, but there is a
"Superfetch" service. Am I missing something ??

Prefetching functions are handled by a different Windows component.

Although, "killing" Superfetch service will prevent system from creating the ".pf" files necessary for the Prefetching function.

I have Gigabyte GA-7vaxp motherboard with a AMD Athlon 2200 Chip in it and everything has been working fine for about 2 months.

Then last night I decided to format my computer and reinstall my OS. After I was all done I had gotten my computer all the way back up and everything reinstalled. I went to windows update and did all my updates and then went to go restart.

My computer would get to the post and then took a long time for it to see the cd rom drive and hard drive. And after it found them it wouldn't boot it would just hang so I restarted again.

And went into bios to change to boot order so hard drive would be first also why I was in there I hit the load optimized defaults and then top performance and then saved and exit

When I went to go reboot the computer now it only goes to a black screen with a flashing _ in the top left hand corner and I cant get past that it wont post or anything I have tried putting the jumper I think is the reset bios on and booting up and then taking it off and still nothing.

When I start it it just goes straight to a black screen no post or anything. Also when I took my hard drive out and put it into another computer of mine it wouldn't boot up its like its toast. if anyone could help me with figuring out what to do next I would really appreciate it.

It sounds like the drive may in fact be toasted.

If the BIOS sees it correctly, go to the Drive Maker's website and download the diagnostic utilities. If it's a Western Digital drive, you can download "Data Lifeguard" from thier site. run the tests and see if anything fails. it almost sounds like the boot sector or the S.M.A.R.T. is shot.

I'm trying to logging into an old account I had on Dailymotion, my password wasn't working and trying to reset wouldn't work so I contactd support. The support is partially in another language and is asking me for my full name, address, identity card scan -- none of which I used to sign up with-- to delete my account or change my password for me. It's confusing me because it looks a lot like a phishing scam but maybe they had a lot of attacks or something? I'm not sure how to reply back and I just to see what kind of playlists I had before I delete it. It's so weird! 

A:Is this a normal support question?

If the information they are asking for wasn't in the account to begin with, what are they attempting to verify (assuming that is the reason for all of the questions)? Verifying you are you before resetting the password.

I am about to graduate with a computer science degee, and always enjoyed tech support.
I worked as a part time sys admin for a 60 employee company for 9 months, and now
I do it as a part time thing and only have a handfull of small businesses as clients.
I would like to give it a shot as a career, and would like some advice from those altruistic techies out there.... well you all are altruistic or else you would not be reading this....

basically my question is what resources do you recommend and what tools should i have?

i am reading a big book about the A+ certification... learning a few things about OLD computers... and don't forsee a reason to pay 350 for the certification soon...

and my tools are:
a computer repair kit (screwdrivers...!)
a power supply tester
a post decoder card (just got it, still learning to make the most of it...)
Norton Ghost
Partition Magic

i feel i lack diagnositc tools
is there an essential diagnostic kit out there that i do not know about it?
i've heard of a few very expensive ones...
(i don't mind putting together a collection of free tools instead of one expensive one)

Hmm, where to start.

As for certifications, the A+ is a good place to start. It might be a bit archaic, but my workplace (major IT tech support company) does the training and requires that you have it to progress, and tons of companies still regard it quite highly. And anyway, knowing about the older stuff really helps with understanding a lot of the newer stuff. So I'd go for that. Microsoft certifications don't hurt either. After those maybe a couple of linux ones, or a CCNA if you're into networking.

Your diagnostic tools are a good start. Generally so long as you've got a good set of screwdrivers you're laughing. As for software, I'd highly recommend you get some kind of bootable diagnostics disc. Two I'd recommend are Insert (http://www.inside-security.de/insert_en.html), which is a small and primitive, but potentially lifesaving bootable Linux disc, or if you're more of a Windows boy I'd strongly suggest Ultimate Boot CD (http://www.ubcd4win.com). Bit of a pain to make the disc, but once done it's invaluable, full of really useful utilities. Both of those will serioualy come in handy for systems that no longer boot. The Windows one even lets you clean off spyware and viruses. Not bad for free.

I'm going to buy a GTX8800 for my pc, but before that I will need to upgrade my PSU because it has only 250W ( i-cute china brand ), it definetly not sufficient to run GTX 8800. I have found this PSU on ebay

You're better off getting a branded PSU from Corsair, OCZ, etc. I doubt that one from eBay will actually output 650W...
Also is the 8800 GTX even in production any more? Even if it is you're better off spending your money on a Radeon 5750 or something, which would probably cost about the same.

Hi, Sorry if Ive posted on the wrong forum but laptops looked like the closest option. Yesterday I clean installed the Dell factory image using reset PC.
All went well but when I checked Reliability History it showed an unsuccessful application reconfiguration warning for Dell Data Vault when Dell Support Assist was installed. During Dell Support Assist installation there was an earlier successful application installation and reconfiguration of Dell Data Vault (version but that was successfully removed 15 minutes later for Dell Data Vault (version ...this was when the unsuccessful application reconfiguration warning was flagged.At the same time  a successful application removal message for Dell data Vault (version is also shown. Im not sure if that means now that I don't have Dell Data Vault installed.
Is this anything to be concerned about? Im not even sure what Dell Data Vault does. Is there anything I need to do or will it successfully update itself later on?

I am an 82 year young person. I have windows 10 on a Lenova desktop computer. I just downloaded Driver Support software. In my control Panel, I list realtek. Is this a redundant system with Driver Support? If so , can I just delete realtek?? Thank you

Not sure what you mean. Realtek is the company that has lots of hardware, such as onboard sound cards, Ethernet and Card Readers. If you have any of those on the computer I wouldn't delete the drivers as it would stop the functionality of the device.

I recommend not using 3rd party driver support software. Some are good, but some are programs that can put viruses on the computer. It's always recommended to get the drivers from the lenovo support website or download the latest drivers from each individual vendor.

Hello, I bought the Dell XPS 9350 Intel core i5 model on Amazon less then a month ago and it worked perfectly until I started noticing a very annoying buzzing coming from the fan with little pressure on the internals. I contacted two different del support reps and they both suggested sending it to the Dell depot. I already shipped it and it is en route but my question is regarding their part replacement. In the notesI requested that they only use brand new parts in my system and not refurbished or used parts. I have a good amount of doubt that they will do that but I am wondering if there is a way I can tell if they put a refurb part in or not? And after reading the horror stories of the depot if my laptop continues to have issues what steps can I take to get a full refund or replacement? (Dell warranty is good for around a year still, Amazon return is not possible anymore)

My sister has a Lenova all in one pc running Windows 8.1.  For the last several weeks, she keeps getting these pop ups wanting her to call them to fix a problem which I don't think is there,  I think it is a scam, but can't find the source to stop the messages.  I have run her AVG as well as Malwarebytes and iobit malware scan and it finds nothing.  I went to the startup file in Task manager and don't see anything there either.
I hope someone has info on this..I have teir 800 number but don't want to call it.

It is definitely a scam.
Uninstall ALL IObit programs....best to use Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware in Advanced Mode.
Could be the ad is only appearing at a certain website or more likely some adware has gotten installed. Use the programs below to find
and remove ALL adware.
Use CCleaner to remove Temporary files, program caches, cookies, logs, etc. Use the Default settings. No need to use the
Registry Cleaning Tool...risky. Pay close attention while installing and UNcheck offers of toolbars....especially Google.
After install, open CCleaner and run by clicking on the Run Cleaner button in the bottom right corner.

Download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
Close all open programs and internet browsers.

I am currently running windows xp, and linux suse as my Operating Systems. XP is 32 bit and Suse is 64 bit. I was wondering if I installed windows vista ultimate 64 bit edition, does it take more advantage of dual core processors? My cpu is an Athlon 3800+ X2 (dual core). Basically will the 64 bit edition make a difference. Any feedback would be appreciated.
