Yoga 20CD hard drive failure - recovery media

Q: Yoga 20CD hard drive failure - recovery media

One of my end users has a ThinkPad Yoga 20CD-00BYUS. He's one of the few users in my organization with a Lenovo device. His hard drive failed. I've purchased a replacement, but don't have any setup/recovery media. Is there a way to obtain this? I can't seem to find a way to do so on the Lenovo site, at least not for a device out of warranty.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

If the machine has been upgraded to windows 10, you can download (free) from Microsoft. To obtain the media to recover your machine to its original configuration, you can call 1-800-426-7378 and tell them you need to purchase a recovery set for a machine out of warranty.

I will add that Microsoft does not make it easy to apply security and driver updates to a newly-recovered windows 7 system. If you had win 7 and you ever want to upgrade, now is the time.

My dad has an Asus Eee pc 1018P that the hard drive worked at the airport, then when he got to his destination, invalid boot media message constantly appeared. I tried rebooting but safe mode was not an option, which baffles me to start out. I went ahead & purchased a replacement drive then reached out to Asus Support to purchase a Windows 7 Starter disc since they no longer include them when you purchase a new anything. I was told they have no more discs to sell but I could pay to have netbook shipped, with insurance to their facility and have return postage & insurance prepaid and for an additional $85, they would re-install Windows 7 Starter. I'm old school and feel that since I paid for and have a valid COA with a license key, that I am entitled to a disc. It happened at Christmas time when I purchased a new laptop for myself & when it arrived, it didn't have any backup software in case of hard drive failure, they immediately sent a Windows 8 disc to the house without charge for the disc or for shipping. This company will get my business in the future. As for Asus & Microsoft, who after 55 minutes of department changing and hold times, basically told me they don't have Win 7 starter discs themselves but would gladly sell me a new copy of 7 Home Media Edition for $119.99 and prices increased with better versions. Is there any legal way to actually NOT be held hostage by Asus or MicroSHAFT? I tried putting the drive in a drive bay and sometime... Read more

Hi Folks!  I have an XPS 8500 which was running a fully updated version of Windows 8.1.  Using Dell Backup and Recovery 1.6.1.1 (free edition) I created a Factory Backup of Recovery Media to DVD.  So far so good.
So now the hard drive failed and I've installed its replacement.  I boot off the Recovery Media but there are NO OPTIONS to recover that actually work.  On the initial screen I get: Troubleshoot or Turn off your PC.
So I choose Troubleshoot.  I'm then presented with: Refresh, Reset, Advanced Options, and Command Prompt.  Refresh says the drive is locked and to unlock it first (huh?).  If I choose a "Reset" I'm presented with a seemingly related issue, "Unable to Reset your PC. A required drive partition is missing."
Why isn't there a "Press this stupid button and we'll reinstall everything off the Recovery Media you created"?  This seems totally absurd.  Am I losing my mind?
Thanks in advance!!

Just yesterday I've lost all access to my 40 gig hard drive. It was my secondary drive in my system with no OS or programs running off of it. The drive was formatted to be FAT32 so my dual boot system (Windows 2000 and Mandrake Linux 8.2) could use it as a swap drive of sorts.

At the time I was booted into win2k and I was trying to access some mp3s on the secondary drive, but winamp kept crashing. When I went to the music folder on the drive, only a few of my songs appeared instead of the hundreds of files in the folder. The window I was browsing with suddenly crashed and I decided a restart would be a good idea. It went to the loading screen of win2k, the blue bar filled to the top and then stopped for a few minutes before I restarted again. Same thing again. I unplugged my playstation that I recently hooked up (but had no problems with in months past) and the system booted up again... this time it showed that my D drive was missing.

I have unhooked both hard drives' connections and reconnected them but nothing changed. If I go to my Device Manager (in win2k) it tells me there are two hard disks still, and the properties of both of them tell me they're working properly (obviously one of them isn't). When I boot into Mandrake Linux it tells me that if fails to mount a hard disk, and "ls /mnt/windows" returns an empty directory instead of the normal file filled one that I am used to seeing.

With further searching I came across the program in Li... Read more

Well this is the problem. I came back from a trip to new york and when I got back, the blue screen of death was waiting for me :knock: :dead: . It said that if you haven't tried restarting your computer to restart it. So I did. After that it would just say operating system not found. I was checking in the BIOS and the hard drive wasn't even being found. I tried reimaging it but that wasn't working because I still couldn't locate it.

So I sent my laptop back to Sony and they replaced the harddrive, but I asked for the original drive back so I could recover some files. There is my problem, do you think it is possible to recover files from a harddrive that won't show up? If there is a way, do you know where I can do this for less than $700 because all those sites I found are charging $700+. The hard drive is not physically connected right now and just sitting here.

The hard drive is for a laptop and its a Toshiba, if that helps

Any help appreciated!

I am in need of some help about hard drive failure and using a recovery disk. Not sure if this question has been answered or not but figured I would give it a shot.  I have a HP Pavilion dv5-1235dx that was running Windows Vista 64 bit. Unfortunately, the hard drive failed and I do not have any Windows Vista disks to help reinstall, and I also do not have the Windows Vista product key located on the bottom of the computer because it was rubbed off. I already have the new hard drive. So what I am wondering is, if I were to order recovery disks from HP is that all I will need to order? Or will I have to find a vista product key from somewhere else? Or how many different disks will I need to purchase? Just looking for the right path to take here. Thank you in advance.

@chowww Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! Order Recovery Media from HP for your PC is not an option because HP stopped carrying Vista media a long time ago. Since HP no longer provides Recovery Media for your model, a couple of other sites you should check are: http://www.computersurgeons.com/ and http://www.restoredisks.com/ But ... don't be surprised if they also no longer carry it.Before using the media, read through this: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00006110Good Luck

Absolutely if you had Windows 10 installed and activated on it you can simply download Windows 10 from the Microsoft Media Creation Tool...select the option to create media for installation on another computer (obviously you have to do this on a computer other than the laptop) and you can choose to burn a Windows 10 DVD or thumb drive for installation. Drivers and some of the original software is available at this site. Is the old drive completely dead or does it work to some extent? All the original drivers and preloaded software is on the old drive (or was until it died).  https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Windows 10 will automatically activate the first time you connect to the internet. If you come to a place that asks for a Key Code just click the button that says "not now" or something like that. If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Hi guys
Hope someone can help.
My external hard drive has suddenly stopped working.
My computer can see the drive (but not the drive label) and the shortcut I have for the drive will open it but when it does there is nothing there.
I have downloaded a few so called free data recovery pieces of software and they can all see the data on my drive with no problems, even stuff I'd previously deleted seems to be available for recovery, however, as soon as you try to recover the data these "free to use" tools need to be registered and paid for.
Is there any free/shareware tools that will get my drive working or at least that will recover the data onto an alternative drive.
Im ever so grateful for any advice offered (apart from back up your data cos I've learned that piece of advice the hard way!!!)
Cheers

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.
Invalid partition table

I realize this means its looking for a network cable (and can't find it) to boot on a network.

* I have disabled the "Network Boot" option in the boot menu of the bios
* I have tested the new hard drive and it will show on another system and allow me to install windows xp on it
* I have set the CD/DVD rom as the primary boot device and get the same error
* I have set the Hard Drive as the primary boot device and get the same error
* I attempted to use a true Windows XP install CD with no luck
* I attempted to use the Toshiba recovery disc that came with the laptop with no luck
* I have removed and reinstalled the hard drive and ram to insure they are seated properly

I am at a loss as nothing I do will allow me to get beyond this message to boot to CD and install Windows XP or anything else for that matter.

On some Toshiba's I've worked on, including my own Tecra, I press Escape and Function 1 to get a boot menu and with an XP CD in, there's a three second only window in which to "press any key" when the prompt appears. Are you seeing that prompt when you boot from CD? You might also benefit from formatting that hard disk in the other machine if you already started to install on it.

Hi All,

Recently my older Acer Aspire 5570-2792 notebook hard drive failed on me. It's about 3 1/2 yrs old. Was running Vista Home.
I of course like an ***** never burned the recovery media from the hard drive. And it's just my luck that Acer no longer has the recovery media available. They told me there was nothing they could do for me and directed me to Microsoft.

My question is this: I have Windows Vista home running on my Desktop. If I smack in a new hard drive in the notebook, can I use the recovery media from the Desktop to reinstall the OS on the notebook? If not, do I have any other options? I guess I could always run Ubuntu.

I know this is an older notebook, not necessarily worth a lot but I'd like to keep this running for my wife. She uses it primarily for web surfing and she's hogging my laptop like crazy every since her's died.

Thanks in advance,

Frank

A:Acer Aspire hard drive failed... recovery media no longer available?

You can't legally used your Desktop's recovery media on your laptop (also because usually manufacturer's build such medium for a particular piece of hardware, with all drivers etc. pre-installed).

I think you can either choose to run Ubuntu or you can get one of those cheap OEM windows media from e.g. newegg. However, one draw back of this is, I believe you can't get any help from Microsoft directly, if you ever need it.

I recently contacted Sony to send me their series of Recovery media to restore my Windows 7 home premium 64 bit. Looks like the hard drive was wiped on the computer and now when I try to recover Windows using the DVDs they sent I'm running into all kinds of issues.

I'm not sure how to proceed to get Windows 7 back on my laptop.

I changed the BIOS to boot from DVD but not I'm stuck on the System Recovery Options menu. There's no system image to restore (I don't think), I can't restore Windows to an earlier point because it no longer exists on the computer, STartup repair won't work because it can't fix any problems that are preventing it from starting.

At one point I even got this message: " "Cannot use this recovery disc for this computer. Confirm the model type." - so my system isn't recognizing the machine because the recovery partition is gone.
I created a new partition but now I'm not sure what to do to move forward.

any thoughts or feedback is appreciated.

THANKS!

A:Sony Vaio formatted hard drive & windows recovery media- cant install

YOu would not want System Recovery Options to boot the Recovery Disks. Put the first one in the drive, reboot and press the F12 key until you receive a Boot Menu, choose DVD drive to boot - unless you have a EFI BIOS in which case you should boot the DVD as a EFI/UEFI DVD drive.

Once you successfully boot the disk it should start Recovery, prompting for the subsequent disk(s).

If this fails then boot into System Recovery Options to open a Command Line to run Diskpart Clean Command which can overcome problems running Recovery media.

Be aware that Factory Recovery is a grossly inferior install larded with bloatware and duplicate utilities that interfere with better versions built into Win7. For that reason most tech enthusiasts prefer to Clean Reinstall Windows 7 to get true Win7 performance. We can help you do this if you want. It discusses in Step 1 how to find the reinstallation media.

I wish they would stop pushing BIOS updates other than at the request and guidance of support, they seem to fail too often and brick far too many systems.       You can usually perform a Boot Block Recovery on modern motherboards, but I do not think Lenovo has implemented that technology on their laptops for security reasons, but you might still check with Lenovo Support to see if they have any options short of replacing the system board.  BTW:   Does your system have the emergency reset hole on the back side of the case, and if so have you tried unplugging it from the power supply, and then pressing it for about 10 seconds or so?  (see item #1 on page 46 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual) Hardware Maintenance Manualhttps://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/s1_yoga_hmm_en_sp40a26742_01.pdf

My wife's Yoga just today stopped charging or turning on.  It was working seemingly fine before and would last several hours on battery (so don't think the battery was at the end of it's natural life).   The little blinky light on the over no longer blinks when plugged in.  There's 0 sign of life.  Here's what I've tried: 1) Hold power button for 20 seconds (both with and without power plugged in while holding before plugging back in after)2) Push the reset button with a pin for 10 seconds (again, with and without power plugged in)3) Used voltage meter to validate 20V from power supply. Also tried a second power supply.4) Removed cover and used voltage meter to validate 20V at board soldier points for the power jack (so power reaching board)5) Checked all chips, hard drives, connectors that were readily visible to make sure they were tight. Nothing when plugging back in. Questions:1) Anyone know of any common remedies or things I can look for?2) Any general guidance on getting something like this fixed? (ie, send to Lenovo, find a big name store like Best Buy, other?) Thanks!

Hello to everyone,I'll need your help. I installed a new, fresh Win 8.1 operating system on my Yoga S1. I also mount a new Intel SSD in the place of the old HDD. So it's way faster now I need to have a HDD password, also a start-up password. So, i set the same password (I'm sure, double-triple check it) for supervisor, power-on and HDD password. I enabled the password on restart option. So here is the problem - when i power on the Yoga, it asks for the power-on pass. I enter it and it is corect. Then, it shows that it enters the HDD1 pass automatically and it is succesfull. The system boots and it's fine. But when i press Restart from Windows, it powers off, ask for power-on pass - correct, then it asks for HDD1 pass. It's the same and should be automatically filled, like in cold start. Ok, it enter it manually, but it is incorrect. I also tried with blank pass, but without succes. So, after three incorect passwods, it freezes. Then, I power off completelly, start again, enter the power-on pass and it's fine, it boots the OS. So, it's not working on restart, but cold starts are OK. As I said, I checked many thimes that the passwords are the same. Please advice guys. Thanks to everyone

Do you still have the 2.5: drive also?  I have seen this behavior once before in a machine with a 2.5" drive and an M.2 SSD.  It turned out that the problem was related to the 2.5" drive, even though the bad pw showed up on the M.2 drive at restart.  My 2.5" drive was originally from an HP and there was something screwed up in the HP firmware that interfered with the M.2 drive.  It took me a long time to figure out what was wrong.  It also might have the same symptoms with an HP SSD

And if so, is there a specific brand of stylus it would work with?I have tried it with a Medion writing pad stylus and a Panasonic tough book stylus, and it doesn't work.It has a "dummy" stylus on the bottom right corner.I'm wondering whether certain models simply do not work with a stylus (even though the touch screen works).Any suggestions or advice is much appreciated

Simultaniously my keyboard backlight, touchpoint and trackpad stopped working. They do not appear in device manager and reinstalling drivers did nothing. On Lenovos advice, I purchased replacement palmrest, trackpad, keyboard etc and fitted them successfully but this has made no difference. Could it be a power management issue? I've updated PM drivers. Motherboard damage? As far as I know no water or physical damage has occurred.

Also I've done various system restores and reinstalled Windows 8.1

Hello all. My laptop used work perfectly until the day I decided to remove all the extra stuff by doing a clean install of Windows 10.  I predownloaded all the drivers I would need and then did the clean installation.  Now I have an issue with my wifi.  It randomly drops connection to wifi and is slow to start working again.  After coming out of sleep it does not automatically reconnect to the ap and I have to trigger it manually.  Separately (i think) when coming out of sleep, the login screen does not respond to the keyboard and I am forced to use the mousepad to click or a touchscreen swipe to get to the password field. What I'm seeking is an official list of drivers that are required for a clean windows 10 install on a thinkpad yoga series 20CD.  If order of installation is critical, please give this also.  I believe I downloaded everything available from the support page but just want to be sure.  Sometimes not all drivers are available when filtering by OS "Windows 10".   Thanks in advance. Laptop specs are:512gb ssdmemory card slot2.4/5 n/ac wireless 7260ac w/bluetooth

Hi there, hopefully someone can help me. Back when my laptop was still under warranty, I complained to Lenovo about the many scratches I was getting on my screen from using their pen. I don't press hard when I draw, and I even bought replacement nibs just in case there was something sharp on the one I was using. Alas, nothing helped. This didn't happen on the last tablet Thinkpad (X61) I had! At the time, I couldn't afford to send my laptop in to get it repaired. I was in the middle of a VERY busy college year. But now, the scratches are so numerous, it's really affecting my ability to work on it. Is there a way to just... replace the matte finish? Looks like it's like a screen protector to me. Is that something I can purchase on my own, or would I nee to take my laptop to a repair place to get it put on correctly? I tried to see if I could take the thing off myself, but I can't even get my fingernail under a corner. I HOPE it's a screen protector of sorts, because there's no way I can afford replacing the entire screen.

Hello, One of our ThinkPad Yoga goes into an endless loop when attempting to reboot. The O/S was upgraded from Windows 8.x (as shipped) to Windows 10 (MS free upgrade) a long time ago and there have been no previous issues restarting. I believe the version of Windows is 10 Home Edition. The HDD is almost fully utilised (1 gig free). Irrespective of the options taken, on boot up the screen flickers what looks like a CMD window in the top left of the display twice very quickly, then after the Lenovo splash screen is displayed:Preparing automatic repairThen Diagnosing your PCAutomatic RepairYour PC did not start correctly Restart just continues in the loop irrespective when continue or repair is selected. I?ve taken Advanced options:Continue ? My S1 Yoga, 20CD-00B1US, is stuck with the screen off and the power LED stuck on. When I try to push or hold the power button it beeps two short beeps and the LED stays solid. I was running the Lenovo Bios Update Software directly from their site. The power cord was plugged in and no other programs were running (aside from background programs). Now it is just stuck like this. Any thoughts or help would be great. I can't even get it to force shut off. Thank you in advance!

I tried to download recovery media for x1 yoga 2ng gen, and it's keep saying `file not found` when download medias. I've dig into bit more and found out one file 010MCM08A.CRI fails to download regardless of attempt I tried. - Does anyone successfully downloaded recovery media correctly?- If so, can you share contents of those file? .CRI is plain text file with module installation definition, should be few bytes of text inside.  I'm so curious why only those specific files are not existing on server and keep failing to download though. Any insight to make download work would be appreciated.
