Toshiba Tecra 9100 battery issue

Q: Toshiba Tecra 9100 battery issue

So, I just bought this new laptop with 1.8ghz, a 40gb hard drive, and 1gb ram for $120. I have installed all drivers provided by toshiba including the latest bios update. According to the online PDF user manual, when the battery is charging, it's supposed to say solid amber color, but mine flickers. It flickers very rapidly when the laptop is turned off in regular intervals. When it's turned on, it flickers about 8 times a minute, also at regular intervals. On the laptop power options, the battery always says 100%, but it won't even last one second when you unplug the laptop. My question is, is it the battery or the port receplicator on the motherboard that's out? I was told by another guy that the board was bad if it did 8 long flashes and then 2 short, but it's not doing that. I don't really trust this guy though, cuz he was one of those snakey horrible people that are just out to get your money. So, is it the battery or port receplicator?

BTW, I've already called Toshiba directly and all they tell me is to send it in to get looked at. They arn't allowed to say the answer to this question over the phone.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have an old Tecra 9100 and I need to access the Setup, I have written to Toshiba Spain provide data on my computer and from there I have been forwarded to another mail client and atencionn the truth is that after almost two months now nevertheless no one has contacted me!

I am really very disappointed with the service it provides to its customers and Toshiba but I am about to buy a new one, I have serious doubts emerged whether to opt for a Toshiba.

If anyone can help me write in Spanish, my post is [email protected] Address

A:Tecra 9100 Setup password-Toshiba aftersales

The Passwords are a security feature that deters unlawful access to your PC (if someone stole your laptop for example). On some laptops it can be very difficult or impossible to remove the password without special tools.

An Authorized Service Provider can remove the password for you for a small fee. There is an ASP list on the Toshiba website.

I?ve just formatted my hdd and installed WinXP Pro.

I?ve installed all latest drivers but I?m having trouble with one; sound driver for the yamaha ac device.
I keep getting the yellow mark next to it.
So I have tried uninstalling it but when I reinstall it I get cannot start code 10.
It?s the latest driver so I don?t know what?s causing the problem.

Can anyone shed any light on the subject, thanks rob

A:Tecra 9100: Yamaha sound driver issue

The issue is known to me.
The sound driver is simply not compatible with the Win XP SP2

The Yamaha AC-XG driver uses PortCls function for checking the operatingsystem version. XP Service Pack 1, PortCls function is changed, then the Yamaha driver cannot get operatingsystem version correctly. This issue also happens Windows XP SP2.

Yamaha already provides the fixed driver. The fixed driver version is the following;
yacxg.sys with software synthesizer
yacxgc.sys without software synthesizer

Since beginning 2015, I own a Toshiba Tecra Z40-A-16C.

I noticed some strange behaviour with regards to the battery life indicator. When the notebook is fully charged, the indicator shows 100% remaining. And, when I use the notebook, the percentage slowly decreases, as expected.
However, once it is somewhere around 50%, the indicator suddenly decreases and says it has only 5 or 4% left and I should plug in immediately.

Any ideas on how to fix this issue?

A:Tecra Z40-A-16C - battery life indicator issue

The battery may need calibrating. Recharge and discharge it completely a few times.

If it still happens, the battery may need replacing. You can check the wear level using HWMonitor from cpuid.com.

Please don't be mad on me but it is not ?Toshiba issue?. If you use some ?company specific? software for any support you must contact your company administrator or people who are responsible for this.

This relates to earlier thread which for some reason got locked and marked 'assumed answered', when in fact it wasn't.

Eldorado pointed me to Markus77's answer. Thanks, but neither Markus77 or Eldorado state that they have tried the modules listed there and actually got them to work in a Tecra 9100. The link in Markus77's answer only points to one of many similar supplier sites I have seen, which say that 2x512MB modules are supported. The point is, Lewislite had tried about 5 different brands/replacements, and none of them were any use, they either slowed his system down or it failed to boot at all.

I was asking, since I would like to upgrade my current 512MB too, whether anyone had actually managed it successfully on a Tecra 9100, or whether this was one of those few cases of a model with a motherboard cache which is insufficient to support more than the manufacturer's stated limit, which for the 9100 is said by Toshiba to be 512MB. Perhaps because most laptops will accept 2x512MB, suppliers simply assume the 9100 will do so too and so offer them to anyone willing to buy them. But has anyone actually done it and got it to work?

The fact that Toshiba make 512MB modules is not in itself an answer, because these could be intended for other models. The facts remain that Toshiba themselves say the maximum for the 9100 is 512MB, and Lewislite tried 5 different modules in an attempt to exceed this and found that none of them would.

So, has anyone actually managed t... Read more

Make sure you use DDR PC2100 memory. PC2700 should work but there may be a compatibility issue.

I Googled the Ram manufacture code 'PA3164U-1M51' to list all sellers of this type of memory. All sites listing this spec point to Offtek.co.uk. Strangely though, Offtek lists 'PA3164U-1M51' as 'Toshiba - DynaBook 1130-S156 - 512MB Module'. I'm not sure whether to trust this as I have a Tecra 9100.

Curiously, I searched Offtek from scratch for 'tecra 9100 ram' which led me to a product listed as 'Toshiba - Tecra 9100 - 512MB Module'. This however has no MFC and lists as a different product code. They're the same price though: 22.21.

Are they the same Ram? Because I don't want to buy one and realize I should have bought the other.

A:Tecra 9100 - help choosing RAM

you must no go after the partnumber. The Tecra 9100 needs DDR RAM PC266. Only the PC266 counts!

So, if you want to be sure you buy the RAM which fits for that machine you must only buy a RAM with the PC266 specification which means you must google for PC266 DDR SO-DIMM.

The best ones for your machine are Toshiba or Kingston modules.

Hope I could help.

I installed a Toshiba Harddisk into a Tecra 9100. Checking the BIOS it shows "Enhanced IDE", but trying to start from the HDD does not work. Even trying to install a new operating system shows, that the HDD is not detected.
Starting the notebook also takes very long.
Any idea?

A:Re: Tecra 9100 - New HDD is not detected

Is your new HDD bigger as 120GB? The HDD controller supports the 28bit LBA and bigger HDDs as 120GB will be not recognized by BIOS.

What you mean with Enhanced IDE? Does the BIOS recognize the new HDD with model number?

My computer is a year old. It was completely fine until I noticed it had stopped charging the battery. After some googling I found there might be a BIOS update I had missed. When trying to install the BIOS update I get a message saying I have to plug in my computer first (which it always is as the batter doesn't have a charge).

The BIOS update program says it wants to upgrade as follows:

BIOS Version : Current Ver.2.60 --> Updated Ver.3.20
EC Version : Current Ver.1.80 --> Updated Ver.1.90

OS: Windows 7
BIOS file I downloaded: bios-20110714132558

Is this a known issue with a fix available?

A:Tecra S11-119 won't recharge battery - BIOS update issue too!

Are you sure that you have downloaded and used the right BIOS version!?
I read about the similar error message and finally the user used not compatible BIOS.

Furthermore the VAP (value added package) should be installed in order to update the BIOS!!! In you case I would recommend reinstalling this tool too.

But I?m not quite sure if BIOS update will help you to fix the battery issue?
Maybe you need to replace the battery?

A:Tecra 9100 won't read burned CDs

Maybe you should check different CDs from different manufacturers and should change the burning speed to the slowest one.

If this will not help then a CD/DVD drive issue might be the reason why not all disks are readable.

What is the biggest size for SD-Card and HDD in a Toshiba Tecra 9100?

My biggest SD-Card has 512MB and works fine. Can I use 2GB or 4GB SD-Cards?
My HDD has 160GB and works. Can I maybe also use 250GB HDD?

Best greetings

A:Max. Size SD-Card and HDD in Tecra 9100

Hi there,
SD-Card size should be both supported, 2GB and 4GB. Bigger ones like 8GB I'm not sure but maybe possible as well.

The Tecra 9100 was shipped with two different sizes of HDD, 40 and 60.
You can be pretty happy that your 160GB are working fine, but I'm afraid such 250GB HDD could not be recognised by BIOS.

Hope this could clarify some things. ;)

Hi everyone,

I?m still having problems with sound on my T9100 and it sounds like other people are having the same.

I purchased the laptop with dead mobo so got another to replace and fitted no problem, fresh install of XP Pro Sp3 and its up and running but no sound.
Having read other threads on the subject I used my Toshiba recovery discs and all went well but still no sound.

I tried updating drivers for the Yamaha sound card but still no good. So I got another sound board and knowing it?s a good one.
I fitted it but guess what no sound, at the moment its running Xp pro but I haven?t updated to any service packs.

If I used the recovery discs surely it should work because its how you would of got it from new! I?m lost now and don?t know what to do.

If I uninstall Yamaha altogether and restart I get found new hardware audio controller. Then I get found new hardware Yamaha sound device, then get Yamaha didn?t install and might not function.

Any ideas please rob

A:Tecra 9100 - OS recovered but still no sound

The problem is that your sound card driver from Yamaha does not support the SP1 or SP2.

You said that you have installed XP Pro and Sp3.
The SP3 can be installed ONLY if the SP2 was installed too? so the reason why you don?t get sound is clear; compatibility issue between the MS service packs and Yamaha sound driver.

Please check the Toshiba European driver page. In Archive -> Tecra -> Tecra 9xxxx -> Tecra 9100 -> sound driver you will find the two different XP sound drivers.

Try to update it!

To be honest I do not have precise answer to your question but maybe you should try to install latest LAN and WLAN drivers. Check also device properties and be sure all power saving settings are set to maximum level.

Intel Speedstep option set to PERFORMANCE.

I hope im putting this question in the right thread.

i have been trying to connect my laptop/notebook to my tv without success i put cable in left hand side of notebook and connect other end to video out on tv i then switch both off and back on again but nothing happens.

Also the Tosh button does not do anything when pressed and the fn button to control the F buttons along the top also do not change anything.
I have disabled these anyway and is there a way to get them working again.

I have the discs to reset to factory settings. Will i need to use these and/or will i lose the content stored on my notebook?

If anyone can help me with the above problems i would be most grateful,

Many Thanks

A:Some issues connecting Tecra 9100 to TV

Usually the using of the FN+F5 buttons should enable the external display devices.
You could switch between the internal notebooks display, external monitor or TV.
If the buttons don?t work then there must be something wrong with the drivers or the system files?

The usage of the recovery CD would be advisable because this would set the notebook back to the factory settings and generally this helps to get the Toshiba features working.
But the usage of the recovery CD will format the partition (HDD).

So if you need you files then it would be advisable to backup the data?

However, to connect the TV to the notebook you will have to use the right s-video cable. On some TVs you will need to enable the s-video option (channel). Then you should use the FN+F5 buttons to switch to the TV.

Best regards

You are right. On Toshiba support page there is 1.60 update available for old Tecra 9100. As I can see just one option is available ? WIN option. That means you must do it under running Windows. So the option with bootdisk cannot be done at all.

Start your Windows, download update (910078v160.exe) and extract it to the desktop. Close all running applications and execute exe file. That?s it!

It?s Yamaha sound driver version

I assume the is a newest one which is available and I think you should use this one!

Yamaha already provides the fixed driver.

Hi, just found this forum.
I'm having problems with my old Tecra 9100 laptop which ive had since new.
I shut it down last night, started it up this morning and it now no longer boots.
It gets past the Toshiba screen, and the windows xp scrolling bar screen appears fine.

But the screen then turns black and doesn't go to the XP login screen.
But windows is working because if i press enter it logs into my profile(i hear the login music theme etc, and the HDD light is on, logging into windows....) Its just i get no display at all?

I also tried an external monitor, still the same, Windows XP scrolling screen always appears, but nothing else comes up on the display.

Any ideas? Hardware fault? (But the toshiba screen and 1st XP screen appears?) , OS fault (even thought i can log in, albeit "blind")???

A:Tecra 9100 wont boot into windows-Black display

This is strange... I don?t think that there is an hardware problem because you can see the Toshiba splash screen and as you said the Windows boots up.

My first thought was that your display was set to external monitor?
It looks like you have tested it and nothing appears on the second display ?:|
That?s really strange?.

Anyway? after the notebook has booted try to use the FN+F5 key combination to switch to another display? maybe it helps.

You could also try to boot in safe mode. Press the F8 at the beginning.
And then choose safe mode.

Maybe its overheating? Check for dust in the heatsink. You can blow the dust out using a Can of compressed air.

I have a old Tecra 9100 with years of good service, and this is my first problem, but is a great one, after a forced reboot the screen shows a BIOS block 1 damaged message. Its there any BIOS diskette image-archive I can dowload to perform the BIOS upgrade in the BIOS?

It still charges up the batteries fine, but won?t turn on. I?ve checked the ram, hard-drive, and I re-set the bios to defaults - nothing stops it from cutting out if you can get it to turn on.

Any ideas what could be the problem? Any help appreciated, it?s the second time one I?ve had - the same problem last time!

Have you already tried cleaning the fan? Maybe a lot of dust is blocking the fan so the notebook can?t start and turns off itself due a higher temperature. It would be worth a try cleaning it.

But in my opinion you have everything done what you can do and it looks like a mainboard malfunction. If cleaning the fan doesn?t help I think the mainboard is defective or something else. If you are familiar with notebook disassembling you can try to repair it yourself with second hand parts. Otherwise it?s time for a new notebook I think?

Yesterday my PC (a Tecra W50-A; with Windows 8.1 x64) performed an automatic windows update. Upon finishing the update, some keyboard keys stopped working (keys A, B, N, right Shift and both Enter's). Since everything was fine before the update, I think it is not hardware-related but rather associated to the update itself, such as installed software or drivers.
In the meanwhile, I have tried to restore my PC to a time point prior to the Windows Update, but the problem persists. I have also tried to find the original drivers for this model in Toshiba website, but couldn't figure out which driver to download/install (none specific for keyboard).

Looking forward for your help.
Thank you in advance

Best regards,

Have read many posts and tried what was suggested. I pulled the 2 memory modules and cleaned the contacts with an eraser. I inserted only one of the modules at a time, switching slots etc. and then powered it up each time. Once with only 1 module installed, I got the WINDOWS XP startup screen (with the moving bar below) and then the Toshiba Splash screen appeared and then the screen went blank again. Seems like the hard drive starts up and then stops. The DVD drive seems to respond with a low clicking sound. I hear a couple chirps/clicks from the hardware but no beeps whatsoever.

I'm guessing bad RAM. I will try with some new RAM later when I get some.

Since I did get the machine to sort of startup once, am I safe to assume the BIOS and Motherboard are okay ?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hello ritter2881 & welcome to TSF

Just to rule out Windows as the probable cause. Go To: Command prompt and type: sfc /scannow. Insert XP CD if prompted.
Post back.

ive got a problem, this computer is starting to really be a pain. I just replaced the harddrive with a new one.
when i boot from the a drive (floppy) everything work fine ,no error messages and it shows up all 48meg of ram.
i copied the win 98 boot disk to the harddisk, format/s sysc, copy*.*
when i boot from the hard drive ( i must do this so i can swap drives to my cdrom) it gives the error "extended memory error " and reads only 16 meg of ram and will not load virtual drive. it also says that command .com and the other boot files are corrupt( this is not the case , the same files work off the floppy drive)
I just dont know what else to do , is this a bad ide on the motherboard? please let me know any and all ideas . i will gladly try them . my next step is to use an ide converter and boot up windows in my desktop and transfer it to the laptop
thankyou websurfernxs

I'm trying to put a company image using imagex on a Toshiba Z40 via booting from USB.  For some reason the F12 Boot Menu is some strange GUI, and when I select USB it simply won't work.  I doubt its a USB3 issue.
Does anyone have any other tricks to force this laptop to boot from USB?  Running out of ideas.

A:Toshiba Tecra Z40 Not Booting from USB

First make sure SecureBoot is Disabled. If I remember correctly there is a setting in UEFI to enable and disable F12 for a boot menu. If that is enabled then see if changing your UEFI to Legacy or CSM boot helps.
How did you create the bootable flash drive.
From your other thread would it be possible to create a bootable Windows 8 USB flash drive with the required image and use it to boot. Windows 8 has native USB 3 drivers. You should still disable SecureBoot if you plan on imaging a Windows 7 OS on the computer.

I would like to share my experiences Installing Windows 8 on a Toshiba Tecra A10 (European Modell)
The Update or Install works fine and Windows recognizes allmost all hardware, except:
Bluetooth --> use latest BT-Stack from Toshiba Support Page (v80012T_20110809_x64.exe works)HDD Crash Sensor --> Toshiba hddprot-20121026130407.zip (contains TC30497500A.exe) work
With prior Versions the Driver will be installed and work, but you can't set the Protection Properties.

After installing those drivers all devices are functional.

Setup does not recognize the dual point device (touchpad and accupoint from ALPS) correctly and treats it like a standard mouse. So accu point and touchpad are both enabled and working, without Problems. But it is not possible to switch them off or do some advanced settings. Drivers from Toshiba (Windows7 or Windows8 from later Tecra modells) dont work properly, causing pauses in the mouse behavior. Accu Point is not working at all.
Original Alps driver from there home page does not work.

Try the lenovo 0kto02w8.exe UltraNav Trackpoint driver, it contains the Alps driver Release Date : 08/10/2012, Version(x86) : 8.0.1611.1xx with Installer Version(x64) : 8.100.1611.1xx with Installer for Windows 8.
It runs properly and supports the complete functionality of the hardware.

Sometimes there are minor problems with the display. Don't try to install toshiba display drivers without creating a recovery snap shot before, since it could happen that y... Read more

Hi Im new here can anyone give me step by step instructions on how to overclock a Toshibe tecra 8000.

A:How can I overclock a Toshiba Tecra?

overclocking notebooks is extremely foolish and dangerous. Notebook computers are not designed to be overclocked as overclocking by nature requires extra cooling.

I am having trouble with a Toshiba Tecra 500 CDT running Windows 98. I have tried a couple of Wireless cards. Installed the software but the card is never recognized? I have tried the Belkin F5D7010 and also tried a Trendware 11Mbps Wireless LAN Cardbus PC Card. My wired lan cards always recognize right away. On the toshiba it makes a low pitch high pitch sound when the pcmcia cards are recognized. This of course never happens with the WLAN cards. Can anyone lead me down a path that may help to get this resolved.

A:Toshiba Tecra 500 CDT WIRELESS LAN

If this is W98, not W98SE, you may have a compatibility issue, many WiFi cards specify W98SE as a minimum. How about more information about the machine and the version of Windows? Also, does the PCMCIA slot work for other devices?
