Ethernet Connection Not Working

Q: Ethernet Connection Not Working

Ethernet cable is new, XFinity modem plugged into is working , "device manager' shows 3 gigabyte network connections (and I know I only have one) : Intel(R) 82567LF gigabyte connection
Intel(R) 82567LF gigabyte connection 2
Intel(R) 82579LM gigabyte connection

the Intel(R) 82567LF gigabyte connection 2 says (in "properties") :"windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it"

"......windows cannot load the drivers for this device (code 31) " ????

same for Intel(R) 82567LF gigabyte connection

and Intel(R) 82579LM gigabyte connection says all is "...installed correctly" ? but no Ethernet connection, wireless only.

Tried re-naming Ethernet from "unknown" to "Local Area Connection" and computer said..."cannot use because that name is already being used" ? yet nowhere do I see any other 'local area connection' ?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Try disabling the wifi and see if it'll connect. If not. Then download latest drivers for wired network card. Remove any software related to the wired network card, then uninstall via device manager. Say yes if it asks to delete drivers. Reboot and reinstall.

I recently had a hard drive failure. After installing a new internal hard drive, formatting and installing XP Home/SP2, I reinstalled all my back up files and tweaks etc. All is lean, mean and secure. However, when I was checking my Device Manager, I noticed the yellow ? next to my Ethernet Controller, which explains why I had to reconnect to my DSL through a USB connection instead of my previous ethernet connection.

In my Ethernet Controller Properties, under the General Tab, it reads as follows:

Device Type: Other Devices
Manufacturer: Unknown
Location: PCl Bus 2, Device 8, Function 0

Under the device status states, "Drivers for this device are not installed (code 28). I tried to reinstall the drivers through the Hardware Update Wizard, but it failed and stated, "Hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software.

I have an Intel Pro 100 M Integrated PCI NIC Card.

Thank you in advance for any for any guidance on this.

I recently bought a netgear router. The problem is, that it will not connect to my laptop. I believe that the main reason why is not connecting is because my ethernet cable is not working properly. For example, when I try to connect my modem to my laptop via ethernet, it will notice it but it will tell me that it is an unidentified network. For this reason I have to use my usb cable which is working fine. I think this is really weird because if the ethernet calbe wouldnt be working my laptop wouldnt even notice it. I tried downloading some ether drivers but I still cannot conect.... this is the version of my ethernet thing marvell yukon 88e8039 pci-e fast ethernet controller.

Please let me know what can I do.

A:ethernet connection not working....

First off, how about the EXACT make/model of the modem and the router. You do realize that when you change from the USB connection to the Ethernet connection on most modems that you MUST cycle power on the modem, right?

You mentioned your laptop has Internet connectivity, so why not download drivers from there? If you have a spare flash drive, download the TSG System Information Utility to it, run it on the defective computer, save the output on the flash drive, and then post it back to this thread. It'll give us more of an idea what we're working with here, since you haven't given any information yet regarding the OS and hardware.

Hi, on my pc (windows XP) I can get onto the internet via wireless mode, if I then disable the wireless connection I can't access the internet using the ethernet cable. The bt broadband connection is fine, as I can disable the wifi on my works lap top, plug into the ethernet cable and hey presto I can get on the internet. So its not the cable or the hub that seems to be the problem. When I look at the connection options the local area connection appears to be firewalled connected on the pc and at 100 Mbps (what ever that means, but I know its better than the 54Mbps I'm getting on the wifi set up). So can anybody out there please help me?
thanks in advance

My computer is running windows 8.1, but I don't know most other details since it was custom built by someone else.

When I plug my ethernet cable into another computer, it works normally, but when I plug it into the computer having problems, it is detected but there is no internet connection.

It worked before, and I don't know what caused the problems.

For a few weeks now when the ethernet cable is not plugged in, there is a red cross on the internet connection icon on the bottom right of the screen as normal, but when it is plugged in, rather than connecting to internet the red cross is replaced by a yellow exclamation point.

So far I've tried most of the things technologically people like me are capable of multiple times, including unplugging and replugging the ethernet cable, restarting the computer and resetting the livebox.

A:Ethernet connection not working properly

Try an ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew from ELEVATED command prompt.

I will also need to know what motherboard you have so I can locate the correct driver because we may need to reinstall it.

If its a desktop, Pull your side cover off the tower and look on the motherboard for a model number. It will normally be close the to CPU HSF and it will be like a SILKSCREENED lettering.

Ive been using my Sony Vaio laptop (windows 7) to connect to my uni halls internet connection by ethernet cable (and keysurf login) for months with no problems, now all of a sudden my ethernet cable is not being recognised. its not a problem with my connection or cable as other people's laptops work on it. and its not a problem with my hardware as my laptop works in other people's rooms. its just the combination of my laptop and my connection.

my friend did something along the lines of resetting the IP address, but not really sure what he did.
so i've done a full recovery of my computer, and this hasn't helped! don't know what else to try!
please please help, i've been internet-less for a couple of weeks and i'm ging a bit nuts.

Welcome to TSG:
I think my first suggestion would be to contact your uni's IT/Tech support folks and see if some settings tweeking might be in order for your pc.They can at least perhaps tell you if they see your attempted connection at all.Might be a good first start.
FYI:I think a full recovery may have been a bit of over kill.

I have installed almost all protocols available, microsoft networks, tcp-ip, etc.... I am using a Belkin fastcat 5e cable (probably over kill, but...) To the best of my knowledge, this network should function. How do I test my cards?? Should both computers be running and then plug in cable or should it find the network on startup?? What is best protocol to use if we would like to play games?? I know for a fact that workgroup names, etc are all correct..... Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated...

I recently upgraded to Windows 8 Pro x64.

My wireless connection is fine, but my LAN isn't. This is a university subscription so there is a proxy server. I asked the school if they have activated my subscription and they said yes. I tried changing cables but it still would not connect. I know the proxy server settings are correct because there is also a wireless connection in school which uses the same settings.

I ran network diagnostics and it said that the connection between the cable and the internet is not working. When I open Chrome, it says that the DNS lookup failed. I tried resetting my TCP/IP, setting my preferred DNS address to and but it still would not work.

I check my ethernet driver settings in Device Manager and it is fine and updated to the latest version.

I was just wondering what is really wrong with my computer and how it can be fixed. Thanks

A:Atheros AR8151 Ethernet connection not working

I'm having the same issue. This was working under Win 7 x64. I just upgraded my Asus G75VW to Win 8 Pro x64 and the Atheros AR8151 GigE interface is in a disabled state. Right clicking and selecting enable does nothing, still disabled. Device status states this device is working properly and is using driver version 2/15/2011 under C:\windows\system32\drivers\L1C63x64.sys.

EDIT: I fixed my issue by upgrading the AR8151 driver directly from Qualcomm. You can access the drivers here:

Need quite a bit more info, before any suggestions can be made.

The “Johnwill” need to know about your environment questionnaire:

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

What country are you located in.
Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
What is the expected Upstream/Downstream speed for your ISP Connection?
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Make and model of your computer.
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms? Have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way? Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?

If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

I recently upgraded from v1511 to 1607. It went well.

Disappointed to find that many of my personal settings and preferences were reset to defaults. Still working through that nuisance.

On 1511 I had set my ethernet connection to be metered as instructed here:
Ethernet Connection - Set as Metered or Unmetered in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums.
And it worked well.

After 1607 installed I had to re-set to a metered connection, as the registry value reset to default (1). The value is now (2) again.

But Windows update does not seem to be honoring it. Instead of saying "we found updates and you can download and install them when you are not on a metered connection", it just starts downloading.

Any ideas?

A wrinkle: The updates are not downloading. It says they are, but it has been stuck on 0% for a while now.

A:No Internet Connection/Ethernet Port Lights are not working

Well; even with surge protectors; it is possible the ethernet card took a minor hit. But one thing you could try is to completely uninstall the ethernet adapter from the device manager, reboot, and let windows re-detect it and reinstall the drivers for it; that way hopefully there will be a fresh install of the adapter. Give that a shot and see what happens.

Hello there,

I was on my computer during a storm and after some lightning struck near my house, my monitor flicked off and on again and I lost my wired connection to the internet. The computer icon in the bottom right of my screen usually showing my connection to the network had changed to a red cross, which usually means the network isn't connected.

I thought this was strange, so I decided to restart my router. After doing so, the computer icon had changed from a red cross into a yellow exclamation mark. However, the wired LAN connection still didn't work and told me my wired connection was on an "unidentified network".

I read into this only and read that I should try to turn my computer's power off completely and leave it for a few hours. I decided to do this and unplugged my computer from the mains for a few hours. I returned to my computer a few hours later and turned it back on, only to discover that the computer icon now had turned back to a red cross, and my computer was not even detecting that the wired cable was in the LAN port. In the Device Manager, under Network adapaters, the wired LAN driver is not appearing. The light on the LAN port is orange when the wire is not plugged into it, and turns a bit green when the wire is in.

I used my xbox 360 to test if it was the wire that was broken, and the wire connected my router to my xbox just fine. I downloaded an update on my xbox to confirm the internet worked through the wired connecti... Read more

Hello, The 2 USB ports on my Idea Pad sometimes do not recognize a device plugged into it (mostly a USB drive or peripherals like a keyboard or mouse). This generally happens if I switch peripherals/external drives while the computer is on. I have to shut down the computer in order for the USB ports to recognize the devices, which is a great annoyance. Also, a recent development is that my Ethernet cable port is not working at all, even after shut downs. The same cable works on my wife's laptop, so it is not a faulty cable. My notebook is still under warranty, so I believe I will need these problems fixed in a service center as these are not software issues (at least I think). Any advice or directions of what to do? I have also had trouble with the computer not wanting to shut down at times, and the restart capability seems to never work.

Hello all, I have a rather odd problem I personally have never encountered, maybe some of you big brains can help me figure it out.

I have a Att (Westell) 7550 Dsl router broadcasting wireless at 1.5 megs.

I connect to this router with 2 different machines. A laptop ( Acer 5552 ), and
a desktop computer ( self built ) whose mobo is an Asus M2N4 - SLI, and is running win xp pro sp3. It is connected via ethernet through it's onboard gigabit ethernet port, which uses Nforce drivers for it's

Yes, 1.5 sucks, but it is fine for general use, I am the only person using it, and im in a rural area with no alternative.

My laptop connects and uses this wireless signal with no problems, I am even able to play games like World Of Warcraft and other non-broadband intensive games on it.

My desktop, which has the latest nforce ethernet drivers, connected via ethernet, is in most cases not usable at all. It connects and I get the standard 100mbps connection notification, yet, it usually cannot
even load a web page completely. I open its status dialog and see that packet flow is very slow. I have tried rolling back the driver, this does not help. I have deleted the driver altogether and rebooted the machine, this does not help. Other than this, my desktop runs the way it should, I built it, and would consider myself an advanced computer user, so, I do not believe it is my machine. I have looked for obtuse registry entries and services as culprits, but I can find ... Read more

I am trying to set up a new Thinkpad laptop to work on my HOME workgroup and on a new OFFICE workgroup. I have used the HOME workgroup for many years, with many computers, without a problem, but this is the first time I have needed to set up two networks, and a laptop that works on both (I got a new Thinkpad, and rented a new office at the same time - big mistake).

- I am trying to configure the laptop to belong to the OFFICE workgroup, but have access to computers/shared devices from the HOME workgroup when I am on the home network, and of course share the Internet connection on both networks.

- Both networks have a Wireless Router with firewall - the one at HOME is a Linksys - the one at the OFFICE is a Netgear.

- Because of the firewall in the router, I have turned off Windows Firewall (although interestingly, it seems to turn on by itself quite often on the Thinkpad - another issue i need to get to the bottom of).

- HOME network is cable/cable modem, OFFICE is a T-1.

- I am trying to use IBM's "Access Connections" tool to create two network profiles, so that I can easily switch from OFFICE to HOME. The HOME wifi is unsecured, while the office is WEP.

Both the wired (ethernet) and wireless connections work fine at the office, but at home, the wired connection cannot renew the IP address, and so IBM Access Connections automatically fires up the wireless radio, and is only able to connect that way.

The Local Connection (at home) shows in the system tray... Read more

I have a Netgear DG834 wireless router which gives me wireless connection to the internet but I cannot connect by any of the ethernet ports. I get an icon saying I'm connected but no packet data is transferring. If I try to "repair" the network I get an error message saying Windows could not complete the repair as TCP/IP is not enabled ...it is enabled when I click into the properties tab.

I don't know what other information would be useful to include. I'm running Windows XP pro with SP3 and as I say the wireless connection runs just fine (well 99% of the time).

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I have a linksys model wrt54gl v1.1 and I am using Windows Vista 32bit Home Edition. I have a pc connected to the router directly through an ethernet plus a laptop, 2 iphones and a blackberry that get wireless internet from it. 2 days ago wireless stopped working. The internet on the pc connected to the router by ethernet is still working and the power, WLAN, ethernet, and internet lights are all lit green. The internet and ethernet lights flash when data is being transferred but the the WLAN light is not flashing. I have restored the router to factory default but it is still not working. The phones and laptop are not detecting any wireless network present. Hope you can help.

I have restored the router to factory default but it is still not working.Click to expand...

The only other thing to try is to unplug the router for a few hours. You could also try another factory reset.

Been having this problem for about a week, we have wireless connection to all our devices, but the cabled desktop is not connecting to the internet!

So far we have...

-IP renew
-Flushed DNS
-'Repaired' connection
-Virus scans
-Removed Bonjour
-Reset modem (Netgear DG834PN)
-Installed new network adaptor (on advice of local computer support shop... verbal advice only, they have not seen the comp).

I believe the error it is coming out with is 'No IP Configuration Found.'

Comp is an ACER Aspire M3190 and we're running on Win7.

Please help!!! It's driving me nutty!

Yes I have four pc's on a four port router, just got a fifth pc, is there a something I could use to connect two of my pc's and still just use the four port router? Or could I use a two port router and connect it to the four port ? I hate to buy a new router and go through the trouble to hook it up and deal with cable people. thanks splice

A:ethernet connection

Hey there,

Simply get a "switch" or a "hub" as its also known. http://www.advancetec.co.uk/acatalog/Networking_Hubs.html

Plug the switch into your fourth port, and then you can connect up to 4 (normally) extra pcs into the switch.

It works in pretty much the same way as a 6 way plug socket.

Hope that helps!

I currently have a USB cable connecting my cable modem and PC. Would using a 10/100 Ethernet connection rather than a USB port have any added advantages over the USB cable, other than freeing the used port?

I'm trying to set up a wireless network, but I'm having a bit of trouble with some of the connections. The router is fairly old and only has Ethernet ports, where as the modem can only use a "mini-usb" to a "usb2.0" connection. I'm trying to find a USB to ethernet convertor, but can only find the opposite! The PC can accomodate both a USB and an Ethernet lead.

I need to either go to: Mini USB --> Ethernet (as one cable)

Mini USB to USB cable --> Ethernet (Via Convertor)

Many thanks

Sad to say...but get a new modem.

hello, lightning fell near my house and since then can I no longer connect to the network via the ethernet cable. I connect to the Internet only via usb. There is no light that turns into the ethernet or on computers, not even in modem. Is there a way to know if there is a problem with the computer or modem?

thank you

Some manufactures have diagnostic programs (or discs) that can be downloaded and tests run to confirm hardware is working properly. So you might want to go to your manufactures website (of your computer or motherboard) and check.

But I feel that if the little green light does not display on your present ethernet port (when the network cable is plugged in) Then I suspect the lightening has caused some hardware fault to it (and possibly to other parts of your computer.

Also, you can purchase a new PCI (internal to PCs) ethernet card, to get back to an ethernet connection again.

I traded in my Xfinity modem for a new one. However, when I connect my computer by Ethernet cable it still shows the name of the old modem. It works fine but why is the old name still showing up instead of the new one?

I am quite new to PLC, so I was wondering if 2 offices separated by 2 km can have an ethernet connection through PLC?

A:Ethernet connection using PLC?

I should think that would probably work as long as they are in the same building and on the same power grid As far as I know once outside of the house there can be residual problems depending on the devices the power has to go through. Also I got this from a manufacturers website though I am not sure what type of powerline networking your using.

"The largest home tested exceeded 7000 square feet and ACEEX's powerline technology had no problems communicating between nodes separated by the maximum distance"

A:help on ethernet connection

Is it a "cross-over" one? If not get a Crossover RJ45 cable, i think your current cable is unsuitable for direct pc to pc connection, for this cable to work a hub is required.

Hi I have a HP ENVY m4 Notebook pc with microsoft windows 10 home. The f12 has an orange light on all the time. When I touch the botton it says on the screen airplane mode off or On. However no matter if it is on or off the botton it still has the orange light. On the right lower corner the wi-fi symbol has a red circle with a white x inside, or sometimes it has the logo of a computer screen with the X. I can't see no internet connections, and even when I go to network & internet in the settings, I only see (airplane mode, data usage, vpn, dial-up, ethernet, proxy) I don't see nothing that says wireless connection. Also when I go to network connections through control panel,I only see the ethernet option. Can you please help me.
