All MP3 files sound like scratch...

Q: All MP3 files sound like scratch...

Hi, I'm using ASUS W5F Lappie, and windows XP SP2 OS.

I use winamp for music player. About two weeks ago, I tried to play my mp3 music files, but all of my mp3 sound like scratch... nothing else but scratch sound...

Then I tried to play them using iTunes, still doesn't help.
And then when I used WMP, the sounds come out fine.

So I decided to use WMP.(I think there must be some error with other player, so I uninstall winamp)

However, when i put my mp3 to ipod, all the files sound like scratch again. (but works fine in WMP). The same thing happen when I burn the mp3 into CD and play it in my car. Even my mates copy the mp3 into usb drive, and play them on his lappie, the error still occur.

What is the problem? I did reinstall the sound driver but doesn't help.

Preferred Solution: All MP3 files sound like scratch...

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

This is a problem I've had before. I think I may have lobotomized the computer to fix it last time. I figure now I'll give someone else a shot. I had no idea where it came from last time. This time I have an idea.

What happens:

Speakers issue short scratch/pucker sound in a somewhat random pattern, but with a frequency that may be tied to number of Firefox activity. It's the sort of sound that you might expect from an animated cat or paper-clip or something that Microsoft would have in the background for noobs, waiting to help you with some random Windows bug that they haven't bothered to explain yet. It'd be the sound it makes when it randomly paws at something to remind you it's there.

Where it may have come from:

I used an installer that was supposed to install Stanza Desktop onto my computer, and it didn't work: NP. It said it was successful: Sketchy, because installer opened one Firefox window up which was supposed to link to a download location, and then another opened up to say that the download wasn't there anymore. The file it was aiming for appeared to be correct, w/ Lexcycle name.
The installer also said that it would leave an icon on the desktop that I could later delete. This is also not true. Nothing there.
Shortly, if not immediately after this install, the sound began.
I had an older installer, and when I went to open the old installer, it gave me an odd looking couple of windows, not very installer- or professional-looking, that told me first it w... Read more

what is a ipod scratch remover for ipod classic 2 gen for it's chrome BACK

for minor scratches , not deep ones, please only respond if u have seen , used or witnessed it or have a vid of it.

A:iPod scratch remover for minor scratch?

The only thing I would trust is BRASSO, but if the chrome plating is thin (very likely) then care with ANY product is needed to avoid plishing the thin chrome away to the nickel housing (or plastic housing if it's only a chrome effect on plastic)

As an example, similar minor scratches on my spectacle lenses have been removed using brasso.

But, since we don't know if it really is chrome or (more likely) just a plastic chrome effect, care with anything is needed to polish. Personally, I would consider that the chances of making it worse would be higher than those of eliminating the scratches, and would simply leave well alone. It's only an audio player. It's only a sign of use.

I have the following desktop: TechComet: My Gadgets

My ?MO? is generally to keep things ?default? unless there is a good reason why I should change the way something is set up.

An example is that I read SSDs wear out over time so it is better to put the paging file on a separate disk. Hence, I created a dedicated partition on my 1TB HD and put my paging file there. The partition is 10GB and the paging file can go up to a total of 9GB (I have 6GB of RAM).

I have read articles that I suggest I move my Photoshop CS5 scratch disk of my SSD onto a separate hard drive. Hence, I made my paging file partition bigger and put the scratch disk there. I don?t deal with a lot of massive photoshop files, so this shouldn?t be a big deal, but again I want the best performance with the least hassle.

So, my questions are:

1. Where should the paging file be placed and approximately how big should it be?
2. Where should the Photoshop scratch disk be placed?
3. Should I move my temp folders off my SSD (i.e. move them to my HD)?
4. Are there any other hardware or optimization tweak that would benefit the speed or longevity of my system?

Again like I said I don?t like trying out every obscure hack, for one thing there is so much disagreement over these hacks that it is difficult to figure out what is the best thing to do.

Anyway, thanks for helping!

It sounds like you have already done what needs to be done. The page file on a system with that much RAM would rarely get used and certainly one the size of RAM would be more than enough.

The trouble with SSD's is that individual memory locations cannot be written too many times before they fail. The number is generally in the 100's, whereas machanical drives have virtually no limit. Because of this, the electronics of SSD's use complex algorithms to place data in memory to avoid using the same locations repeatedly, and that slows them down considerably since it is another layer of sorting before the data is actually moved. So, you may be wise to put those files elsewhere if a lot of reading and writing is going on.

But since the page file would be used so little on your system, I really am not sure that moving it has any advantages. Also, you will not be able to produce memory dumps to track down problems if you get blue screens.

I've tried a lot of things to figure this out and it's been going on for quite awhile, still if anyone can post any reason why it won't stream sound, please do so, I want help badly.

I tried an instill of a new hard drive and made it the master drive, however I couldn't install windows from a disc (pci.sys) so instead i copied my os off of the old hard drive but everything had to be copied. (If you can tell me an install process to help me with my sound that'll work too)

absolutely everything from the internet = no sound except if it caches a file and plays that file instead.
checked volumes, "play sound in webages", downloaded codecs, flash, updates.

Could you please, help me set up a new 7 installation?I recently upgraded my CPU,got a new SSD,its all in system specs.Successfully cloned my C drive, but something doesnt feel right.Reboot time is 50 seconds, most of it BIOS searching or identifying two of my IDE drives, checking NVRam and stuff.I would really need some guidance, flashing and configuring BIOS maybe,re-built the machine from zero...

A:Help me set up 7 from scratch

Check for an SSD firmware upgrade, then try some of these steps if you haven't yet.

SSD Alignment - Windows 7 Forums
SSD Tweaks and Optimizations in Windows 7
SSD - Install and transfer the Operating System

I'd also run a few Startup Repairs to see if it finds anything to repair or otherwise sort.

However if this isn't sufficient you may need a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which steps are the same for retail and assure a perfect install if you stick with them.

First I'd check for Update or reset the BIOS to defaults.

I don't know what you mean by the first part of that. You can create a network via an ethernet cable between the two computers, or an ad-hoc wireless network, or connecting them both to a router or ethernet switch.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 computer, which I ordered in mid-2002; it's still a good system, 2.0 gh Pentium 4 processor; 512 gig RAM, 60 gig hard drive.

I have had to have the hard drive replaced recently, which means that I'm starting over from scratch; they saved my data, but not my software. The techies loaded AVG Free Version as an antivirus.

In various postings on the hardware board, in which I tried to solve my virus problems myself (thus the new hard drive), various people recommended SmartCop, a free anti-virus program, and AntiVir, another freeware program.

What do you folks think? Is one clearly better than the other? Is there a commercial program worth paying for that is better than any or all of these?

And what about spyware/adware? I know that there are programs like AdAware out there, and I think I got my virus infestation from downloading a new version of WebRoot's SpySweeper software.

What's the best anti-spyware/adware program? As with everything else, it's better if it's free, but on the other hand I paid for SpySweeper, so I wouldn't mind paying for a program that worked.

Bottom line: Help me through this, folks!!

Thanks, Caleb

A:Starting from Scratch

I have never heard of SmartCop. I use AVG and so do a couple other million people. Many people use Avast as well. They are the two best Free antivirus out there.

There have been a lot of threads about migrating an OS to a SSD, but I have not seen anything about doing a clean install to an SSD. Other than changing to AHCI, is anything else required? Nope, nothing else is needed other than to make sure that you are using AHCI in BIOS before starting the clean install of Windows 7 just as you normally would on a HDD.

My only problem was that at first I didn't realize I had to reinstall drivers. It took me nearly all day, but I finally figured it out, and am connected to the Internet once again.

Writing this here in case there's anyone else who doesn't realize they need to reinstall drivers too.

A:If you have to reinstall everything from scratch...

Input appreciated...the necessity to install drivers is taken for granted by experienced users who had to install Windows 9x or who installed XP after buying it.It's still a relatively recent development that boxmakers sell systems which don't contain any instructions or means for reinstalling XP from a Microsoft CD...the users who have acquired systems since then would have to read their uwer/owner manuals to get any idea of the value/procedures for installing drivers.FWIW: How to update a Windows hardware driver - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-update-a-windows-hardware-driver/ Glad you solved it, happy computing .Louis

Hi.I want to set up a home network and as I've no experience of this I would be grateful to be set on the right path.
I need 3 PC's to be connected wirelessly with each other in different rooms.
The main PC has a printer and ADSL broadband which I want the other PC's to be able to access
i would like one XBOx to be able to be connected wirelessly as well.
Is there one 'set-up' which can achieve the above in one go? At work we have A WiFI router to enable 3 different PC's to access the internet independently-each PC has a usb Wi Fi dongle but none actually communicate with each other. Is this because they've just not been 'set up' as a network or do you need more than just a 'wi -fi dongle' to communicate between PC's?

As well as transferring files etc from one PC to another we will want to set up a LAN for videogaming.
Main PC will be XP Home, other 2 will be XP Pro
The oldest PC is USB 1 compatible only. The slowest processor of the three is Pentium3 800Mhz.The other 2 have ethernet ports but I assume because I want to go wireless that these will be redundant.
Thanks for any advice

I have 2 computers running Win7 Home Premium. At one time (at my old residence) they were networked together fine, but when I recently moved and reconnected them, the network between them didn't work anymore. In trying to "fix" that, I'm afraid I may have messed up a few things. In any case, I'd like to TOTALLY eliminate the network between them and start over again.

Not sure how to do that. Is there a "quick" way to get back to a pristine "two-separate" computer configuration so I can start over again? I would want to eliminate all previous folder sharing, etc between the two computers...WITHOUT losing my Internet cable connection running through my "server" computer with my Cox Cable High Speed Internet modem.

I've seen and read a lot of tutorials here on how to set up a network...but can't find one on how to "disassemble" a network with Win7 and get both computers back to a "pre-networked" state.

Thanks for any help

I recently purchased a 300Gb Maxtor Diamond 10 SATA HD for my new PC setup. It seemed pretty slow and HDTach software shows random acces times between 20-25ms and read speeds averaging 60Mb/s.

HD running with a nVidia nForce 4 chipset on a GB K8F9 M/Brd w/ Athlon 64 3000 CPU, and I know that Maxtor have recently had problems with some of their HDs and the nVidia 4 chipset.

Well, basically I wish now Id plumped for a Western Digital Raptor!! Reinstalling Windows and what seems to be an ever increasing amount of software to make things "just right" is sooooooo time consuming.

Is it not possible to create an exact image of my maxtor drive and plonk it onto a new one? An exact mirror if you like. This sounds like RAID terminology which I dont know much about but maybe the answer lies there somewhere. I was hoping that MSDOS xcopy with a myriad of parameters would do it??? I mean the hardware setup is remaining static otherwise and ...well....what about SATA drivers..hmmm.

My 98se based pc crashed / jammed last week. I am fortunate that I work in a large building which contains the head office of some computer repair engineers.

One of them fixed my pc and upgraded it to XP as well as increasing the speed and memory etc.

He then re installed some programmes but advised me to stay with the Norton 2003 Professional edition for antivirus, Zonealarm for firewalls and Microsoft antispyware.

He virtually insisted that I should not install stuff such as webroot and spybot as he claims they all fight each other and create problems.

Question........is he correct in what he says ?

A:Starting from scratch

He is wrong. Having to many anti viruses and firewalls may interfere, but having spybot and adware personal there as well wont kill anything.
I suggest 1 AV, not norton though. (kinda.. well interesting to say it kindly, that he suggests norton)
The firewall is fine as well. Just keep those 2 down to 1 a piece.

Hope that helped,

So I'm having problems with my computer. I've defragmented the hard drive and it says it doesn't need it, but still my computer is running really slow and tends to reboot it self very often.

all I can think of doing is taking everything off of it and starting from scratch and load the programs back on that I need.
if anyone has any other sugestions please share. Or if you can help me with taking everything off of my computer so I can start over I would love it.

Thank you,

A:Want To To Get Rid Of Everything And Start From Scratch

If I had a choice, I would go with the clean install, starting from scratch. It's very easy to do.

If you have your hard drive backed up, then all you need to do is wipe out the hard drive, delete the partition, then create a new one, format, load the os, and you're good to go. Then all you have to do is load your programs, and transfer your backed up data over to your new os.

It's a done deal.

Building the OS from scratch seem to me to be the best way to go when building a new computer. As time goes on after a year two or three the OS seem to get sick such as my auto run don't work no more and after Microsoft work on it for 3 hours it really don't run no more. Bugs, jitters, shakes and just old age. So after I build the computer I think I'm just going to build the OS from scratch. I've did it both ways, from scratch and just move it to the new computer and after I just reload the OS and rebuild it I feel so much better not to mention the computer runs like a high school student instead of someone like me that just took sum Vitamins.

I was playing MVP 2003 and my vertical standing, console fell over and the game froze. I tried to start it again and it gave me a disk read error. I noticed on the disk it had a couple of smudgy scratches toward the center. A couple of times I got it to go to the MVP title screen, but then it would freeze again. All of my other games work fine. Any way to fix the game? Is it doomed?

Thanks in advance.

A section of my HDD has been damaged in some way (I believe a physical scratch to the surface). The program which the HDD was accessing when it got scratched no longer works. However everything else on the computer runs perfectly fine. The only problems occur when CHKDSK /r reaches stage 5 (verifying file data) or when I attempt to defragment. Then it either freezes or crashes. I have run SpinRite 6.0 and have identified the areas damaged. I am planning on backing up all essential files, however getting a new hard drive for this laptop is out of the question for me at the present time. I have resigned myself to the fact the hard drive is likely to fail relatively soon and that this damage is eventually going to make the hard drive unusable, however in an attempt to extend its lifespan, I was hoping to separate the damaged areas from the healthy HDD. My first thought was to create a partition which would contain all the damage to the hard drive and leave the healthy section intact, however I'm no expert in this area. Is there a way to dictate the parameters for a partition so as to use the values given to me by SpinRite about where the damage to the HDD is and create a partition which contains the damage? This would only be a temporary fix so I could defragment of CHKDSK without risk of a crash and to extend the life of the remaining HDD.

A:HDD corruption/scratch

I would try Hard Drive Regenerator, not Spinrite as it might actually fix that and it is shareware so you can get 1 free sector fix this way. If there is more than that then you have to reboot it to run again.

My GF has a thing called scratch off tickets that pops up on her pc.
She was at a website and a pop-up installed this thing on her pc. There is nothing under installed programs, and i cant find anything in the registry. Ad- aware will scan the system but when it finishes scaning it just resets back to the opening menu. Pop-up stopper pro wont even turn on anymore. When it pops up when she closes it, it just pops up again.
The pop-up has the name "FCS2K", if that rings a bell.

If its not connected to the internet, an error comes up that says something like "can't download application"

Compaq Persario 700
Win Xp
not sure of whats in it

A:Scratch off tickets pop-up

Please do this on the affected computer:

Go to http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads.php#det , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please show us its contents.

Most of what it lists will be harmless, so don't fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

1) Here's your opportunity to fantasize on my dime...I've been reasonably pleased w/my approx. 2yo compaq presario w/amd..but not thrilled. It has always been pretty slow, reliable, but reliably slow. I've finally dredged through every intestinal turn in it's bowels and removed all offensive bits <--just in time to hand it over to my college bound son. I'm going to get myself a new laptop. Here's a summary of what I will use it for and how I connect to the web:

Comcast Cable connection directly to old Dell computer in office. Laptop connected via

Panda platinum security software.

What I use my laptop for: web browsing, word, exel, bill paying, streaming live
music concerts, watching tv shows i missed, iTunes, digital pictures, more music,
weather reports, most specifically hurricane and lightning live radar and tracking. My
laptop is mainly an entertainment item for me, not a data sorting work machine.

Where I use my laptop: outside on the lanai (in the shade) on a glass table in the

What I'd like: a)FAST, FAST, FAST. b)A battery that lasts more than 12 minutes.

Hello, I was wondering on how to go about removing a very small scratch on my monitor. It seems that the scratch is only on the anti-glare finish on it. Its nothing real serious, just wondering if anyone know a good way of making it less apparent or complete removal.

Btw, its a NEC CRT flatscreen .

I am finally going to give up trying all the other solutions -and want to start again.

I have a Toshiba laptop running windows XP - we added some memory last year - but it is getting slower and slower.

I have a couple of questions - if I want to clean the computer and start from scratch -is it just a matter of using the recovery CD?

If so - when I put the recovery CD in the drive - a window pops up and asks me what program I want to use - then when I tell it to look on the internet for the program - it tells me it cannot find the program

So - is there some special instruction I am supposed to give it?

I did a bios and everything seems to be OK - (thought maybe there was something wrong with the CD drive)

Obviously a neophyte - any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

I have got a bad situation. My friend purchased a new hp elite book 8440p about a year ago with windows 7 installed. He was recently killed in a flying accident and his wife has given me some of his stuff. Among that stuff was this laptop that she nor I could access since it was locked. I would basically like to know how to start this computer over as if it were new and return it to her. I know there isn't anything she needs off it as it was his unit he used while tuning cars. Is there a way for me to start this unit over like new or are we holding a useless unit. Please keep in mind I am not real computer savvy so please be gentle.

Thanks for the help.

ok i need to delete the hard drive but i dont want to delete windows and stuff because long story short i dont have the reinstallation disks... i dont want to erase the drivers or any thing needed to operate the computer as i normally would. lke to go on the internet and play games an stuff... basically return it to the condition it was when it was new... but here is the major dilema... i cant get to desk top... the farthest i can get to is the part where i would enter command prompts, (which i know close to nothing about, other than to type exactly as a tech helper tells me to). is this even possible or am i better of buy ing a new hard drive... also does a new hard drive come with windows and stuff pre installed?

A:Starting Over Just After Scratch

Did your computer come with a boot disc? A boot disc will restore the system to factory state, meaning it will be like you just took it out of the box. Windows and all the software that came with it will still be there; you will just have to reinstall any Windows updates that you put on after you got the computer. My Toshiba came with a boot disc, and when I used it, I never went passed the title screen; I inserted the boot disc (before booting up the computer), and while it booted, I held the 'C' key on the keyboard. The computer loaded the boot disc, and all I had to do was follow the on screen instructions.

Each computer has a different way of doing this. What kind of computer do you have? If you didn't get a boot disc, there is probably another way to restore the computer to factory settings; HPs have a place on the HD that you can access to restore the system. Check your users manual, the boot disc cover (if you have a boot disc), the manufactorer's website, or call their tech support to find out how to do this.

As for buying a new HD, I don't think they come with windows installed...and I wouldn't do that unless your current one is completly unsalvagable. Try the factory restore first. I've done it twice...it works!!
