Can't find "show desktop" tile on Metro start screen

Q: Can't find "show desktop" tile on Metro start screen

I upgraded to the CP a few days ago and just noticed a huge problem. The "Show Desktop" tile that is normally on the start screen be default has gone missing. I can't figure out how I got rid of it in the first place, but is there some way to add it back?

EDIT: I have changed the title to more accurately reflect the problem. A bunch of the features that come with Windows 8 CP (the tablet friendly Settings page, Remote Desktop, the show desktop tile, The Windows Store, etc) all vanished shortly after I installed Windows 8. I tried reinstalling and the same thing happened again. If anyone else is having this issue, let me know.

Preferred Solution: Can't find "show desktop" tile on Metro start screen

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Can't find "show desktop" tile on Metro start screen

Go to the start screen and just type Desktop. The first screen shown below should appear with the Desktop listed. Right click on the desktop icon and re-pin it to your start screen using the option at the bottom of the screen. Below it shows only 'unpin' as I have not deleted the desktop icon from my own Start page.

Gradually getting my head around W8 CP, however after a recent reboot the tile for "desktop" is now gone under metro.

Any ideas how to restore? If I right click and browse all apps it isn't present.

Having navigated to "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs" I can't see a desktop shortcut there but I'm fairly sure there was one before. If someone could give me the information to recreate it as it appears on their system it would be most appreciated!

A:Lost "Desktop" shortcut/tile in Metro UI

Hello CDJay, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If you like, you can use the "Show Desktop" shortcut at the link below to pin to your "Start" screen that will work like the default "Desktop" one.

Show Desktop Shortcut - Create - Windows 7 Forums

In addition, you should also have a Desktop link in the "Desktop Tools" menu that you could use to open the desktop.

Hope this helps some,

Please Help! I inadvertently deleted my "Show Desktop" shortcut that resides on my Quick Launch Bar... I somehow accidently dragged it to the desktop then deleted it - the actual command and not just the shortcut, I believe. I have become accustomed to it being on my Quick Launch over the years and I really miss it. Is there any way to resurrect it? I know I can still right-click on the task bar and click Show Desktop, but I much prefer the direct shortcut if I can get it back. Any suggestions??? I'm using Windows XP SP2 Home Edition. Thanks for any help.

Hi guys!

First question: One of the things I disliked about Windows 8 was how you had to switch between two completely different GUI environments. It felt like they were in the way of eachother.
So when I installed Windows 8 on my 'main' PC rather than on my test PC, I was happy to notice that on a dualhead setup, the desktop goes neatly on one screen and the metro screen on the other one.
This way I could keep an eye on the weather, news, social media and such while doing other stuff on my other monitor... So I thought.

Problem is, when I click on the 'start' icon on the left screen, the metro screen appears. On my right screen, the desktop stays put. That's fine. But whenever I click the desktop or any piece of software running on my right screen, the metro screen disappears and my left screen shows my desktop with taskbar.

What I'd like is to be able to manually open and close metro on my left screen, instead of it disappearing because I do something different on my right screen.

Hope you get what I mean, rather tough to explain this one.
If you don't get it, I'll make a video

A:Metro "Start screen" disappears on dualhead

Anyone? This seemed like a rather logical thing to ask .

Unlike previous versions of Windows where you are taken to desktop at system startup, Windows 8 welcomes you with Metro Start Screen, providing quick access to applications and system shortcuts, pinned programs, and so on. Apparently, Windows 8 doesn?t allow users to bring the classic Windows Startup behavior back. If you don?t want to click the Desktop metro tile every time after logging into Windows, here?s how to bypass Metro Start Screen and jump to desktop directly.

Hi all,

I'm puzzling this one. In the folder options when I choose 'view' the radio button to show the hidden files is missing. I've already checked the registry at the HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Advanced/Hidden

and everything seems ok (value for 'Type' is 'group' etc.). Using the XP tweak (Kelly's corner #155) shows the hidden files, but the button still missing.

Another thing that I encountered with was that from the start menu the "Help and Support" not working. Again, the registry seems fine, and the process is activated (started). This came up when I tried to use system restore option - with no success.

A:missing "show hidden files" button + "Help and Support" not working from start menu

Ok I found the answer (after quite a lot searching), as follows:

1. for the 'Hidden files' radio button - I used methods 1 and 2 from here-
http://www.technize.com/2007/05/13/s...s-not-working/

2. for the helpcenter I just reinstalled it as described here -
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rebuildhelp.htm
note that the file 'dataspec.xml' is needed to be available for this, and it can't be done directly from the XP CD. The thing that worked for me was to insert the XP CD, and use the file that in my computer (C:\) and afterwards another file on the CD.

Again, all this happened with no virus detection, so I believe that there is no infection. However, if someone has remarks on the HiJackThis log I've put, feel free to add them.

Have a nice day,

Fitch.

What I found under Windows 7, when you use the "Show Desktop" feature (I prefer the ? Win + D shortcut) and then bring all windows back by using it again, some windows behave as if they're glued to the front of the z-order. What this means is, say, I have windows
A B and C open, with focus on A, hit ? Win +D twice, and now it may happen that if I then want to switch to B or C, either by Alt+Tab or by selecting them on the taskbar, the taskbar shows the highlight, but A stays visible (and usable, it's not just a rendering
issue) in the foreground.

Imagine the following situations, all three windows cascading and overlapping:

A (focus)
B
C

-> ? Win + D

Desktop (focus)

-> ? Win + D

A (focus)
B
C

-> click C on taskbar

A
C (focus)
B

-> click B on taskbar

A
B (focus)
C

And so on. Focus means actual input focus, i.e. in second situation, any keyboard typing is sent to window B while window A is in the foreground.

It does not matter what kind of application; in my current case an instance of Outlook and an instance of Explorer is stuck, while a second instance of Explorer and an instance of Firefox behave normally. This should show that this problem can occur even between
multiple instances of the same application, and that there are no fancy applications involved that like to pretend they are the most important program and internally force "always on top".

Your files and folders may have been hidden by the virus, go to folder options and 'show hidden files and folder' to see if they actually are hidden. If they are, you can use Grindler's UnHide tool to 'unhide' all of your files and folders. As for the virus, move this thread to the virus and other malware removal forum in order for it to be noticed by an authorised malware removal member.
Good luck!

I need a tweak or registry edit to make it do "Win + M" Minimize all Windows, instead of "Win + D" show desktop.

Reason is it hides my gadgets and docks, while Win + M keep those on the desktop and just minimizes the windows.

any help would be really appreciated.

I've found a way to make the loading time of Metro apps faster. I've tested this on 2 different laptops, but want to find out if it helps anyone else.

The method is:
1) make a remote desktop connection (RDP) to your Windows 8 machine from another Windows machine (in my case, a Windows 7 desktop).
2) verify that your metro apps are not running in the background already (Check Task Manager)
3) open a metro app and see it open 5 times faster!

For whatever reason, I've found that when opening Metro apps over a remote desktop connection to a Windows 8 machine, they open noticeably faster than if opening them while using the Windows 8 machine locally.

Doing this I saw my metro app load times go from ~10 second down to 2 seconds.

Is anyone else seeing this behavior?

Details on the laptops running Windows 8: One is an Intel core i5 w/ 4GB of RAM and a 7200 RPM drive w/ Intel 4000 integrated graphics. The other is a core i7 w/ 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD w/ Intel 4000 integrated graphics.

I believe this is a win8 problem, even though I'm running it in a virtualbox I dont think that is the cause, it only showed me the problem. (maybe I'll post this in the VM forum too)
As stated, I got win8 running in virtualbox. It installed no problem. Took a little effort to get my virtual win8 to see the "real" hard drive on my win7 machine (had to RTFM and install "guest editions"). So now my virtual win8 can see my local drives. So far so good. The problem then became that the local drives that win8 sees are actually seen as network shares. This meant I could not add them to libraries, hence photo apps, video apps etc see no media. With some more effort and lots of googling I managed to get the network shares added into the libraries. I thought all problems were solved, NOT!
Note that all this tweaking was done in the desktop mode...
Even though win8 sees libraries with tons of media, when I start one of the included metro apps for photo's or video's it still says there is no media!
So the desktop see's libraries with lots of stuff, metro see's nothing! "Metro" cant be looking at its own seperate libraries can it? that would be dumb. Does anyone know what might be going on here?

A:Libraries on the "desktop" not available in metro

metro, as well as media center (same behaviour was in win7) is building it's own database (cache) of media files, located in configured libraries.
have no idea if it will support remote locations, maybe you'll be able to add them as another media source (in metro app settings) or research if it is possible to set it up as media extender.
you can try to set up lan connection between host and vm (many vm's support that option), and then turn on sharing of media for this network connection on your host computer.

Hi folks -

having trouble recovering my password for a Homegroup, Windows 10. I know, know - I don't know why I don't have it written down along with my other bazillion passwords...

I'm on the computer I used to set up the Homegroup, which I vaguely recall setting up a year or two ago when we first got this desktop. I'd like for other computers to access files on this desktop, I assume via the Homegroup. but I can't recall the password to connect to this desktop via Homegroup.

I've read that if I'm logged into the account on the computer used to create the homegroup, I should be able to go through control panel/Homegroup/show or print password - but I don't see that option.

When I go to CP/Homegroup... it says "bsn on NISNESTPC has created a Homegroup on the network" - and only gives me two buttons to "join now" or "close". If I attempt to "join now" - I get as far as needing to enter the password, of which I can't remember. There are also 2 links for "change advanced sharing settings..." and "start the homegroup troubleshooter". Neither of which are helpful.

In short - how can I recover my forgotten HomeGroup password in Windows 10??

Many thanks.

When I try to "Find" something in Excel, most of the time I want to search the entire Workbook, not just the open Sheet. In under to do this, it is necessary to click on "Options" in the "Find" dialogue box and then change the "Within:" setting.

Is there a way to force the Options to be automatically open when I go to Find? And even trickier, can the "Within:" choice default to Workbook instead of Sheet?

A:Excel: Always show Options "Find"

Highlight the worksheet tabs you wish to search and it will seach them all.

Select SHEET 1
Go to the last sheet and hold shift and select that one

EXCEL will select all sheets in between.
If you do a FIND ALL... it will give you a list of their locations.
If you do a FIND NEXT and it will search all of the sheets one at a time.

However there are a few weird things. EXCEL2002 for example will search from last to first as far as the sheet order - and if you select certain sheets using ALT instead of SHIFT it can even scramble the order up.

Give it a try.

also, does someone have a shortcut to "cmd" and/or the shutdown menu? I'm having to do multiple steps to get the interface out of the way

A:bug? Items added to "Desktop" are hidden ... show in Explorer

Hello Cognus,

You could right click in the Navigation Pane and click on Show all folders to have more options including "Control Panel" in it.

For CMD and Shutdown, you might see if any of these may help depending on what you like best. The ones for Windows 7 below will work in Windows 8 as well.

Power - Add Cascading Desktop Context Menu in Windows 8Taskbar - Pin or Unpin Apps in Windows 8 (can be used to pin cmd.exe)Open Command Window Here - Windows 7 ForumsControl Panel All Tasks List Shortcut - Windows 7 ForumsControl Panel - Add or Remove from Desktop Context Menu - Windows 7 Forums
Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hey guys, now I have this very minor, but weird problem that I would like resolved on my computer.

As you can see above, my image for the "Show Desktop" Button will not show in the Quick Launch bar... how can I restore it? I tried Google, but all Google is showing me on how to make this icon again and drag it there... but I already have the icon, I just want the image restored.

I know this is very minor, but I am sorry I am not very good with all this.

Any help?

Hi there,

I have a weird and frustrating problem: In my desktop context menu, the option "Sort by" doesn't show up. I don't know why and did some Google searches but almost everything I found was related to explorer issues, not to desktop issues!

I also read through "How to Change the Desktop Icons View Alignment and Sort By Order in Vista" and "How to Change the Group By - Sort By - Arrange By View in Windows 7 Explorer", yet the only thing I found is that indeed the "Sort by" option should be available.

I also found

Quote:
You?ve always been able to auto-arrange your desktop icons by right-clicking on the desktop and choosing ?Sort By.? Now Windows 7 makes it even easier. To auto-arrange the desktop icons according to your default settings, simply press and hold F5. Order is instantly accomplished.

Source: 7 Windows 7 Tips: Part 3 (Now you have 21 total things to try!) - Windows Live
which I consider being ridiculous, at least from my feeling at the moment.

*edit* Attached an actual screenshot.

I hope there is a way out and that M$ did not kill off this important 101-feature!

Thanks in advance!

Kind regards.

Hello KnowledgeWorker.

Please excuse my mess but I get "sort by" on my desktop though I'm not sure where to start to help you sort your issue; I'm sure someone else with some knowledge of it will come along to help shortly.

Hello,

Since I want a pretty minimal interface I don't want my desktop icons to show. However, whenever I uncheck "show desktop icons" they always return whenever I restart my computer or plug/unplug my power supply. Also, whenever I try to uncheck "show desktop icons" I usually have to do it twice before it actually works.

I am running an ASUS Notebook K51AE/K70AE Series running 7 Home Premium 64-bit. It has 4GB of RAM and an AMD Turion 2.20 GHz Dual Core processor and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 graphics.

I have read other threads where people have similar problems with ASUS laptops but they haven't been able to solve it properly either. I have tried all the things in this thread (Show Desktop Icons won't stay unchecked - Windows 7 Forums) and tried some things from several others but nothing has worked so far. I haven't yet tried anything with the registry as I'd rather leave that alone unless I have to.

Thanks!

Hi -- I'm running Windows XP/2nd SP with IE Explorer 6 (updated to 2nd SP). Somehow, my "show desktop" shortcut got corrupted and wouldn't work, and I now have a two-fold problem.

First, I can't figure out how to recreate it (it's also not in my START line-up). I tried to follow directions in Microsoft Article ID: 190355, and created the text file okay, but when I went to save it as: WINDOWS\System32\Config\Systemprofile\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch couldn't find that within System Profile (where the article told me to save it), couldn't find or get past the portion highlighted in red above.

Second, when i tried to drag the icon I had successfully created onto the taskbar, it became a cyan colored word on the cobalt blue background of the Taskbar, and I can't get rid of it/nor does it seem to serve any function.

How can I resolve these issues, please.

TIA for your help,

Iris

Hi,

I just got rid of Trojan.Vuku on my computer. When I boot to my desktop, I could see all my icons. Once I open any programs (not maximazed), my icons no longer there, in order for me to see them agian, I have to click "show desktop". I also cannot just right - click on my desktop once I open some program, I have to click "show desktop" first, and then I can right click and go to properties, It's kind of like my icons in the background or something.
Did my anti-spy done something?

Please help. Thank you!

A:Icons are not showing up unless I click on "show desktop"

Boot into Safe Mode, install and run MalwareBytes and CCleaner (I also use Spybot Search & Destroy) to ensure your PC is clean.

If you have an XP CD, you could boot from the CD and try performing a Repair.

While I know that the "show desktop" button that is by default on the far right of the taskbar does the job pretty well, it unfortunately does not play nicely with multiple monitor programs/rainmeter.

So I was wondering if it was possible to write a shortcut that does the same thing as manually minimising every window. (The difference being when you manually minimise all windows is that when you re-maximise a window, only that specific window opens. Upon re-maximising a window after clicking the "show desktop" button, EVERY window re-opens.)

I would be nice if I could minimise each desktop/monitor separately, but I'd be happy just with a feature to minimise all windows.

Any ideas?

A:A "show desktop" shortcut that actually minimises all windows?

I'm not sure this will work but it can't hurt.

Put the cursor on the screen of choice and use the Windows key and D.

Hey folks,

maybe it seems a bit silly but I got the following situation:

QUESTION:
Is it possible to redirect the windows taskbar "show desktop" button to a certain file or is it possible to change the entry the registry in a way it doesnt minimize rocketdock each time I press the button?

I am on Win7Pro 64bitSP1. Using RocketDock to keep my Desktop cleaner - RocketDock works perfectly except for one thing.
When clicking on Win's Taskbar's "Show Desktop" button next to the clock, it shows me the Desktop but it minimizes RocketDock at the same time, and I a have to force opening it again.
Now i figured out that a .vbs file including:

Quote:
Set shell = wscript.CreateObject("Shell.Application")
Shell.MinimizeAll

A shortcut to this file can then be placed in RocketDock - which again implies I will use RD(RocketDock) in the way that it keeps hiding and showing up on top of everything, by itself...giving me the possibility to click that shortcut in RD - but I want to get to the Desktop by keeping the windows taskbar button and at the same time not minimizing RD.

Attached a screenshot of the desktop:

Would appreciate some help on this one - thanks in advance everybody!

When you click show desktop, all the desktop icons have disappeared. Then when you mouse over where they are, the icons and names will re-appear.

Has anyone encountered this issue?

You might try a system files check.

Whenever I try to use the desktop (trying to click an icon, trying to right-click, or clicking it with either mouse button for whatever reason), my desktop is totally unresponsive. If I try to click an icon, nothing happens. Right-clicking does not bring up the menu. I'm unable to make the drag-select box when I hold down my left-mouse button.

I have made sure that my desktop icons are showing.

I'm able to make my desktop normal again by right-clicking the taskbar and choosing "Show the desktop", or by clicking the quicklaunch desktop icon, or by pressing Windows button + D. However, whenever I open a window, the problem comes back.

I notice that when I have no open windows, or my windows are all minimized, and I right-click the taskbar, the option "Show the desktop" is available, instead of having the "Show open windows" option.

Everything else about my computer is normal. In fact, I just reinstalled Windows a few days ago (the problem only showed up today).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

A:Desktop completely unresponsive until I use "Show the desktop"

I'd check that you haven't got any strange programs running, especially in startup. If say, you had a simple virus that coats your entire screen in a transparent, maximized window, it would display exactly those characteristics. I've never heard of such a problem before, and doubtless someone else has another idea, but that's my hunch.

PS: Don't be fooled by the lack of a "CHEEKY VIRUS" tab at the bottom of your screen! Nor in the start menu Startup folder for that matter. You could possibly identify it in the Task manager, but a program that tells you all programs cued for startup would be the logical first place to check.

Hey guys,

Is there a way to customize the "Show Desktop" button in the quick launch so it minimizes everything but what I specify? In my case, when I press the button, I would like for the Sidebar and RocketDock to stay visible.

3 month old laptop, mostly pretty happy with, except for slightly erratic touch-pad, but several times a day, the mouse pointer, all by itself, runs to the lower right of the screen, and clicks the "Show Desktop" icon (even with no hands on the touch-pad/keyboard at all). . . The first few times I panicked, thought I had lost a ton of work/play, as all my normal dozen open apps just vanished. Now that I know what it is, it is not so bad, I just "click" and everything comes back. But seems to be getting a little more frequent, and it could become a real $%^&*(.

So, any ideas at all welcome. Hardware? Software?, Drivers?, Alien infestation? Poltergeist? Virus?

Poltergeist was my first guess, malware would be my second. Have you tried running any anti-malware program? MBAM is a good choice and free.
