Setting Google as default search IE11 through GPOs

Q: Setting Google as default search IE11 through GPOs

Hi all,
I'm trying to set Google as the default search engine when an end-user types something in the navigation bar. Standard this is Bing, and although Bing is wonderful we still would like to go with Google.

What I did:
1. Made a new GUID (PowerShell New GUID thing): {001c1193-09c6-4f56-a5b7-2b031da433a7}
2. Set the following reg keys:

Preferred Solution: Setting Google as default search IE11 through GPOs

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello
We are moving to Windows Server 2012 R2 and therefor to Internet Explorer 11. I have already upgraded the administrative template files holded by our domain controller (.admx files on the central store).
When trying to create a GPO I just can't find a configuration item to set the browser title. I know that IEM has gone in favor of group policy preferences. But there is no such config item there as well. Am I stuck with IEAK11?

Thanks in advance

My single-user Windows 7 Home PC is running both IE 11.0 latest version and Chrome latest version. I've always used IE as the default browser, but decided to change it. A couple of weeks ago I set Chrome as default, and pretty soon after, my Speed Dial 2 was completely inaccessible, as in "Page not found."

I started mining my Acronis True Image backup for files that I thought may contain all the data, but after several tries, I stopped for fear of hosing the whole system. My Speed Dial has a lot of groups and bookmarks, so I finally gave up and restored my most recent Acronis backup. It worked marvelously... Whew! At least I know for sure my backups are good.

So today, I again set Chrome to the default browser. Kaboom. I restored yesterday's Acronis backup and am back to square one. Any ideas what might be happening? I really would like for Chrome to be my default browser, but rebuilding Speed Dial 2 is something I really don't want to do.

I'd appreciate any ideas. I hope I've given all the information necessary to think about this.
Thanks,
Rusty

Hi,
Some of our users are complaining that on Windows 7 on IE11, when they open the google homepage and type in keywords to search, it just resets the page and they have to re-type it again to return the search results.
Effectively, they have to re-type the search words twice. This isn't happening on IE8.
We have even removed the so-called buggy "KB3038314" but it didn't fix the issue.
Anyone experienced similar issues and got it fixed?
Regards,
Ochen

Try this....Open Google Chrome....click on 3 bars top right corner....More Tools.....Extensions....untick MSN and BING search engine....this way you use Google Chrome,

To use IE11 open tools cog top right and click on Manage addons...click on Search Providers....down at the bottom find more search providers....choose Google Search...you can change the listing order in Search Providers.

This is the third time on three different installs that I try to replace Bing with Google search using "Add Search Provider" but in Gallery once it is selected Google will not allow adding - the button does nothing but sit there.

This has happened in both Windows 7 and 10 for me. On one when I went back the next day it added, but two others (including just now checking my IE11 on Win 10) it won't budge.

Any suggestions?

Really not sure what's happening. I tried in incognito mode and the result was same. I then uninstalled Chrome and removed its data directory and did a fresh installation. Nothing changed. I just recently rebuilt my Win 8.1 Pro system, and ran into a little issue. In IE 11 desktop, when I go to manage add-ons and try to add the Google search engine to my list of search providers (I have no problem finding it in the list of options), when I click on the "Add to Internet Explorer" button, nothing happens. I would normally get a confirmation window saying do you want to add Google search and make it your default, but no window appears. I have totally reset IE, and uninstalled/reinstalled IE, but the issue persists. I was wondering if anyone else has run into this problem recently, and if anyone has managed to come up with a solution to allow Google search be added as my default search engine so I can remove Bing. Thanks in advance.

A:Unable to recently select Google Search engine in IE11

Yeah, you're right, the other Google ones such as maps, translate, etc. work OK, just not the Google Search one. Not sure why that is, but you can manually install one for Google yourself instead.

1) Go to EnhanceIE.com - IE, Chrome, Firefox Search Provider builder

2) Use https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=TEST or https://www.google.com/search?q=TEST depending on country.

3) Click 'Install'. It will come up with the confirmation window you're used to seeing.

EDIT: It seems you can no longer add them manually either, so I don't know. I hope there's a legitimate reason for this and it isn't for nefarious reasons. It seems the ones listed as 'Search Provider' won't install, but the ones listed as 'Accelerator' will.

Hi,

Can somebody please help me get rid of this message once and for all ??

that will be your antivirus or anti-spyware program alerting you to the fact that chrome tries to change the default search from MSN to Google

there will be a setting somewhere in your AV to allow the change

Hello. I recently installed CamSudio but I don't know what happened that the initial page and the default search provider of Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome were suddenly changed to www.searchult.com.

I have Windows 8.1 Pro.

I ran several tools to try to get rid of this: malwarebytes, adwcleaner, Junkware removal tool and Superantispyware. I ran then until they told my system was cleaned.

Then I erased all the settings of chrome, explorer and Firefox several times.
And then and I ran CCleaner and delete all the temp files.
And then I modified the shortcuts for Chrome, explorer and Firefox because they were loading searchult.com
Then I disabled some suspicius scheduled tasks and one suspicius startup program.

It seems that Explorer and Firefox are cleaned but I just cannot get rid of the default search provider of Chrome.

When I try to edit or delete it,  it tolds me "This setting is enforced by your administrator".

I erased all the registry keys under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Policies/Google but the problem persisted.

Please forgive my english, I don't have many oportunities to practice it.

I got my shiny new laptop yesterday and basically Microsoft have ruined New Laptop Day for me. Not only did it take me an entire evening to custom things as I wanted (took FOREVER to figure out how to turn the Charms Bar off) but I'm STILL having issues.

My question is this: I am using Google Chrome as my search engine but my .gif files still open in IE. I have tried to change this but when I click on the 'change programme' button, Windows 8 gives me an option of 'apps' to use, none of which are Google Chrome. When I click on 'look for more apps on this computer' Google Chrome is STILL missing. When I checked on the Start menu all other apps, including the ones I'd downloaded (VLC, Quicktime, etc) are there and blue BUT Google Chrome is greyed out.

Anyone got any idea how to fix this issue? I hate being forced to use IE for anything and this is driving me NUTS.

Hi

Last year, when searching for the above title using google.co.uk, I used to get a result which pointed me to a thread on this forum and, several posts down, was a link to a page which had a simple shortcut which set google.co.uk as my default search provider in ie11.

Now I can't find it. Does anyone know where that post or even the location of the link is?

It's almost as if it's been removed or blocked by MS.

I can't stand Bing as I never get a sensible response even on simple MS matters.

Open Internet Explorer.
In the top right corner of the search box, click the down arrow.
Click Add.
Select Google.
Click Add to Internet Explorer.
Check the box next to"Make this my default search provider."
Click Add.

I am limited to using IE because the credit card scanner used with the receipt printer requires Activex support. My only workaround now is to switch to using Chrome whenever I need to print to any printer other than the Windows default printer. There was

?DisplayName?=?Google?

"(Default)"="Google"

I overwrite all of the Default given Bing Properties and I didnt create a new key or deleted one.

Where is my Problem?

I still get Bing as Search Engine.

firefox 39.0
Windows 7 home Premium SP1

Appraently due to a quarrel between Google and Mozilla, everytime I open Firefox I get a message

"Get to Google faster. Switch your default search engine to Google.  Yes.  No, Thanks."

I have clicked "yes" and "no, thanks"
My default search engine set to google.
I have removed all other search options from Firefox.
Home pages are google and yahoo.
My browser is set to always use private mode and "tell sites I do not want to be tracked."

Solutions I've seen involve using a firefox add-on "no-script" or make an exception for cookies from google.
Assuming I don't want to use those solutions, is there a way to edit the registry to keep this google pop-up from occurring?

My apologies if this is a duplicate topic, I've searched the forums, but haven't been able to find anything that addresses this specifically.

Thank you.

Internet Explorer Accelerator has no add ons.

Also how to change the tool bar and accelerator default search engine or provider to Google.
The accelerator is the little arrow that appears when you highlight text in documents when searching the net using Internet Explorer.
I’m outside of the United States so when I changed my search provider from Bing to Google in the tool bar at the top right of the Internet Explore window I also lost all the add ons available for the little arrow "accelerator" function.
Firstly if you out side of the US and you want to change the search provider in the tool bar at the top right then you click the arrow in that corner > Find more providers. At his point on this page you must change your location top left from the country your in to United States. Wait for it to load then at the bottom of the page select the search provider you want for example I chose Google. Click on the icon and it leads you to the add to Internet Explorer button. Click that button and you now have Google or what ever you chose as an option.
Now click the little arrow at the top right of the page again but then click Manage Add-ons. In this page right click the search engine you wish to have as your default and add it as your default. Both the tool bar and the little arrow will now have Google as the default search engine.
If you delete the other search engine which is "Bing" as I did then you will lose all of the accelerator option when you highl... Read more

Firefox, version 38.0.1
Windows 7 Home Premium

I have google set as the default search engine, yet everytime I launch Firefox, there is the following at the top of the window:

"Get to google faster. Switch your default search engine to google."

How do I shut off this stupid message since I already have google as the default search engine?

A:Firefox - How to stop google message about default search engine

Just saw someone in another forum having the same issue, and they resolved it by "accepting the cookie request" at the bottom of the screen. Have you noticed if such a thing is appearing for you?

Chrome changed their default search engine to Yahoo a little while ago, so if you haven't checked the settings for a while, might be worth double checking there also

In the past, whenever I would do a google search,
then choose a link, and if the link was no longer available,
it would go to a default screen. Typical windows screen saying
page was not found. And if the page was part of a site, it would
give the index of that site.
For example, if someone went to JanesWeb.com/example123.htm
and it was no longer on the web, a page would appear with
JanesWeb.com listed to click on so you could look for other pages from that site.

The last few days, whenever I click on a site that is no longer available,
I go to a screen by shopnav http://search2.drsnsrch.com/apps/ which lists sponser names of things related to the name of the page I was searching for. This is very annoying, as sometimes just one page of the site has been renamed or deleted and I miss the option to click on the index of the web site that was selected in the search.

Does this make sense? Have you found the same thing happening to you?

I have deleted all cookies and still that crappy search2.drnsrch.com screen comes up which has a name of 'Error Page Assistant - MIcrosoft Internet Explorer' in the tool bar below.

Below is the hijak list. My gut feeling is that is realted to the 7 references to: websearch.drsnsrch.com
I went into the registry and of those 7 - deleted those with reference to tool bar and changed the url to shell.windows.com , but they changed back to
websearch.drsnsrch.com

Any suggestions on how to get rid of websearch.drsnsrch.com?

Somehow I got the dealio toolbar as an add in to IE8. It was preventing me from keeping Google as my "default" IE search engine. It wanted Yahoo. I deleted Yahoo as an add in and it would go to another search provider other than Google.

I removed dealio toolbar with Revo Uninstaller and can now set and keep Google as my default search engine.

What was funny is that dealio was not enabled as an add in or toolbar. I may have got it when I downloaded The Weather Channel add in.

If you have a problem with IE searches, see if you have dealio. Remove it and see if things are better.

Hello, I'm having some trouble with Chrome browser. Each time I change the default search engine it reverts back to google after restarting. I've tried resetting all settings back to default and then setting the default search engine after just to make sure it wasn't another setting interfering with it and it still just reverts back to google after closing the browser. I've tried having a look in regedit to see if i could find a key where this setting is saved but no luck. Could anyone help me out with this? I want to use Chrome browser, but I don't want to use google search engine.

Mozilla has announced that a new point update has been made for its browser, which is now at version 34.0.5. The devs have made quite a few changes, but the main features seem to be the new default Yahoo search engine, which has replaced Google.

It was just a matter of time until Yahoo replaced Google as the default search engine in Firefox and it looks like Mozilla has been quick to make the change.

The announcement regarding this modification was made just a couple of weeks ago and users have been expecting to see Yahoo as default in Firefox 35.x, but Mozilla released a new point update for Firefox 34.x, and along some other new features and fixes, the new Yahoo search function reigns supreme.

The latest Firefox update is pretty interesting, in and of itself, and the devs could have made turned this into a much more important version, but for now we're still stuck with the 34.x branch. It's not all that unusual, but it's a good idea to upgrade your browser as soon as possible.

It should be ticked, if not tick it, a reboot will be needed.

I have visited this forum before, but just joined today to try to get a solution to my problem:
I can't get IE11 set as my default browser (and it's the only one I use and have installed).
There's an old thread dating back to March 2014 talking about the same problem- a pop-up every
time I open IE11 that asks if I want IE11 as my default browser. I have answered that "yes" dozens of times
and also used the Tools/Internet Options/Programs-"Make Default" button, and none works.
(That thread was called "Browser won't remain as default")

That previous thread ultimately gave a 5-step solution and I follwed those:
1- search for specfic programs and uninstall- I didn't have the Delta one, but cleaned out
some recent installs that may be issues;
2- remove Delta browser hijacker with Adwcleaner- I have used this program before, and ran it again-
it did not find Delta or much else, but cleaned out nevertheless- (Adwcleaner worries me, inasmuch as it
seems to disappear from my computer every week or so..?);
3- run Junkware removal tool- did that and it cleaned out one or two items;
4- run Malwarebytes Free- I use this regularly- this time at found a few items;
5- run HitmanPro- did this also
None of these processes solved the problem- (that user did a repair/install of windows 7 finally)

This morning I tried HijackThis- the log has some strange things, like blank files and even missing files,
but most do not seem Delta-related and I'm not sure what to d... Read more

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
Sorry for the delay response
Very interesting issue with no other browsers installed it could be Panda switching your search default so it triggers the auto reminder to switch it back in ie

I used Panda briefly but I believe it has setting for search ?
Click on the Gear symbol on the top right and Manage add-ons,
On the top left column toolbars and extensions section,
And on the bottom left switch to Show all add-ons
Post a screen shot of this page,

Also check the search providers section too and report back
Cheers.

Mouse Pointer Disappears in IE when trying to add Google as Default Search Engine and Completely in Chrome. Solutions require IE Performance Troubleshooter which is missing in MS10
Mouse pointer started disappearing in Chrome and no solutions have worked. It appears there is a driver update to MS10 from wch.cn - Ports which I can not roll back without a full restore of MS10 to previous date. At first, changing Chrome:Settings
(turning off hardware acceleration) worked, for about an hour. Giving up on Chrome, started using IE10, but I want to use Google search engine. Cannot add the Google add on so that I can change the default search engine. Symptoms include the mouse pointer
disappearing on any Google page or related page and even using the touch screen, Google add on will not add. This bug (or virus) pretty much prevents use of Google and Chrome and how there is not a solution for this as of yet, by either MS or Google, is beyond
me.

I hope this is the right section. Please have me excused, if not.

I run Win10, but use IE11 as default browser.
The problem is that the menus appear to the left, and not the right.
I have searched the net and my settings for a solution, but I could not find any.

It only does that for me if there's a long name in the sub-menu and there's not enough room to the right to display it in full. It may be that IE11 has forgotten the correct dimensions of your screen. Try changing your display resolution in Settings > System > Display > Advanced display settings to something else, then back to your usual display resolution. Hopefully IE11 will now know what settings to use.
