Software/extension for password management

Q: Software/extension for password management

Hello,

Keepass and similar softwares have "edit/view" button where the password can be seen easily.

Do you guys know if there are any similar softwares where it is not possible to edit/view/see the password?

So: Only one master password and all the usernames and passwords would be under that for copy&pasting?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've been thinking about the use of password managers lately and wondering whether it's worth exploring an alternative.

The problem, as I see it, is with having one master password - I know this is supposed to be kept securely by the developers, but I've heard of several security scares in the last few years. Of course, this is much more secure than simply using the same password everywhere, but if hackers were able to gain access to people's master passwords, surely it would be a goldmine for them and disatrous for everyone else! Even if the master passwords are well protected, this is possible, right?

Back to the alternative... what do you think about the possibility of devising a new unique password each time, writing it down, and physically guarding it. However, this would just be for the accounts you deem most vital, so a password manager could still be used for less important accounts. I know it sounds inconvenient, and I suppose it would only work if you're not prone to losing things, but could be a viable option?

Hi everyone!

Today I want to share this new, and really simple, extension, Password Field.

This extension simply allows you to show and hide passwords fields in the webpages, and it is avalaible for Mozilla Firefox and Firefox-based browsers, but there are also other extensions like that avalaible for Chrome and Chrome-based browsers, for example: ShowPassword

LINK: Password Field

Thank you all for reading

A:Password Field extension

This is an excellent utility add-on! It is not always necessary for passwords to be invisible while they are being entered.

I would like to contribute to this thread, if I might, with the following related add-on: Password Exporter
Password Exporter is a nifty add-on which allows you to export the passwords and usernames which are saved in your Firefox browser, to .xml or .csv files. (NOTE: The add-on also allows you to obfuscate those files for extra security in storing your passwords)
You can keep the exported files as a backup and you can restore them at any time in any Firefox browser that has this same add-on installed.

Thanks for sharing this add-on, @Jo Man!

Hi All,
Tried to find a similar issue in the forums first. Forgive me if I this is a repeat afterall.
I got an Optiplex 9010 I7-3770 SFF (VPro) used desktop recently to put into my cloud in the lab. Normally I simply check the cover again (AMT #1) and move on with the MBEx selection after F12 during boot. This one is not working as expected. Here is the sequence of events:
1. Power on the computer and F12 to get the boot options/list.
2. I can see the Intel Management Engine BIOS Extensions option there. I select and press ENTER.
3. Screen disappears, but comes back now "without" the Intel Management Engine BIOS Extensions option! At the top is states that "Note, some options have been removed as they are no longer valid.".
I have not seen this before. IF it is disabled, why show it...
But in any case, the question I have is, how can I get this option to work so I can provision this box using Intel AMT/MBEx settings. The machine is enabled for MBEx (AMT #1 on the inside chasis cover).
The BIOS revision for this box is A14. I may need to update it as well. Though I am going to wait for any responses before doing so.
Thank you all.

Hi everyone,

today I want to share with you this useful extension, which allows you to generate passwords from website's domain and master passphrase.

Original description:

This firefox extension allows you to generate site-specific password from a single master password. This avoids the hassle of remembering a unique password for each website you sign up to.

We all have dozens (or even hundreds) of website accounts we have to remember. We are then tempted to reuse the same password for several websites. If one of them is hacked or malevolent, you risk exposing your other accounts.

It mixes together your personal master password and the website domain using a little cryptographic magic we call SHA-1. It will always get the same result if given that domain name and master password, but will never get that result if either changes. (Well, once in a few billion times it might.)Click to expand...

This extension is avalaible for Mozilla Firefox and Firefox-based browsers.

Unfortunately, the extension on that list is different than the one I had 10 days ago (had to re-install). Does anyone know where I can get the updated (if there is one) extension? The one I had before was more polished looking than this one (chrome icon matched the look of the KPM tray icon).

Hello,

Have a quite old program that ran on previous PC which used XP.
Would like to get it going again, if possible

Tried all the compatibility screens and wizaards, and it seems like one problem "might" be that W7 can't handle one of the program file xtensions called: .INS

I did a Google, but all that seems to come up are a multitude of sites that want to sell Registry scans, etc.

Is there a place anyone can recommend where I can obtain the extension inexpensively or free, to install ?

And, if i can get it, what do i do with it ?
Where do i place it, etc. ?

Much thanks as always,
Bob

A:Obtaining Software Of A File Extension ?

Hello Bob,

The file extension in itself should not cause a program to not run on win7.

I can find 12 references to programs that have used the .INS filetype

Alphabetic File Extension List

what is the actual program you are trying to install - if it was designed for XP then unless the program deals with system level access or is specifically written to only work on XP one of the compatibility modes should work.

another option if you have Professional or Ultimate Win7 is XPmode

One other option is to convert your existing files into a newer format and/or find a program that is win7 ready that can read the files or file conversions

i have a very, very old digital camera. i of course installed the software that came with it. the problem is that every time i transfer pictures from the camera, .jpg files keep getting registered with this digicam's program (which is called 'image expert'). i want jpg's to open in internet explorer like they normally do. i keep having to delete the old association and create a new one.. then i've to go into the registry so i can get the thumbnail views working again.

there is no file association setting in the digicam's software. is there any way to stop this from happening? or has 'image expert' created a hopeless situation?

A:digicam software keeps taking over .jpg extension

try the following.

Go to a .jpg picture and 'Right' click it. *Don't open it, JUST right click the unopened file*

From the menu choose 'Properties'.

Near the top is an option saying 'Opens With'.

Select that, then look through the list of programs it brings up.

From there you can bring up the default opening program of your choice - Internet

Explorer is in the list as is 'Windows Picture and Fax viewer' [which you might want to try out if you haven 't already].

The important part of this procedure is directly below the list of programs in the dialogue window itself-you'll see a line saying;
'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file'
**** Tick the checkbox you see there to make it your default opener for all your .jpg pictures.

Hi

What is the 'best practice' for managing one's passwords?

A) HOW SHOULD I STORE PASSWORDS?
Problems:
1. I need to manage a fairly large number (i.e. 50+). So there are too many to remember.

2. Obviously I don't want to keep them inside a simple unencrypted text file, in case my data gets hacked.

3. If I download dedicated password application how can I trust it?(!)

4. I don't trust 'The Cloud' nor any of the big data owners: google, apple, amazon, drop-box et al.

5. I don't want to be tied to anything that I cant migrate with me onto my next hardware, when I come to upgrade my PC(s).

Either way I dont really want to pay anything (certainly not more than a few dollars) for this security.

I was thinking of using something like TrueCrypt to create a virtual drive (that I encrypt robustly) and then storing my passwords in an ordinary text file.
That way I would have a single master password (for TrueCrypt) which would give access to all the other passwords.
[Aside: Obviously if I forget my master password I'm screwed!]
B) PASSWORD CONVENTIONS
As you know many sites require passwords that meet specific rules e.g.
- At least one upper AND one lower case letter
- At least one digit
- No tripplets (three characters the same next to each other) (iTunes!)
- No more than 16 characters

Double-click problems
Some sites allow extended ASCII characters (e.g. ?$%^&*) , which give VASTLY better security of course. BUT they are a mighty pain to use regularly because if you... Read more

A:What is 'best practice' for password management?

I have gone through the same thing. Most of mine I don't worry too much about, like this site. If anyone discovered my password here, what harm could come to me, except someone typing messages under my name, no big deal. The only ones I really worry about are my bank, paypal and ones like that where money is involved. I have a word document with Passwords that is buried in a file and is doubtful anyone could find it.

Hey everybody

Here at the office, we have been using Microsoft Access 2003 to manage our agents. It's worked pretty well, but we need something that will do more. Now, I'm not sure of the extent that Access can go into, so it may actually be able to do everything we need it to do.

What we need is contact management software that will allow us to set everyone up into groups. But we need to be able to set up users for the database. These users would have limited access, depending on who they are in the company. Also, we need something where we can attach resumes, files, etc. to it. We are currently using Access, and about 3 other programs to do various things.

I've taken a look at Act! 6, and it is almost perfect for what we want. The people can be put into various groups, and I can attach files right to those people for easy access. Almost perfect.

The problem is, Act doesn't allow me to set access to the groups. For example, when I was using Act, I would set up a hierarchy, to where the top group is the top guy, and each person under that person is a subgroup. That works perfect, except I need to be able to set it up where only certain people can see these groups. I can't do this with Act.

I've taken a look at some other programs as well, but Act is the closest thing I can find. Does anyone know of some really good Contact Management software that I can use? Or is Access capable of what I need it to do?

Thanks.

create a autorun.inf that points to a .bat file containing a move command
Examples of using the mv command

http://www.techrepublic.com/article/...d-dvds/5268081

It will work the same way with an external drive so long as you set your laptop to run the auto run instead of just opening the drive.

If you put the .bat file in the source folder command would only have to be

Code:
move *.* c:\locationtodumpfiles
No need for software for this, you can do it in about 5 minutes with notepad.

FileMaker is about the best database program out there for the consumer. You can create a custom CRM program quickly and easily. You can export the database in a variety of different formats, each is compatible with Access and you can execute SQL queries.

I can make you a runtime (database program that runs independently) of one of the contact management files - it will export, but it won't have built-in SQL queries. If you wanted that, you'd have to pay me to design it

Forgive me if this isn't in the right spot. I didn't know where to put it.

I'm looking for some software that we can use to manage our printing in our office. We have a couple printers that we print on each day and we'd like to track how much gets printed through there. I've found some stuff, but the main function I'm looking for I'm not sure they offer. We aren't trying to see who prints the most or waste paper or anything (we don't really see that as an issue) but instead we need to track our reimbursable.

All of our printing (for clients) gets charged back to the client. Basically I want something that when you click print on your computer, you have to select what project it's for. Maybe just enter the project number. Then the software tracks how many pages (of both 8 1/2 x 11 and 11 x 17 separately) so at the end of the month we have a total of how much each project requires we print.

Does anyone know of software that can do that?

I am looking for something that will allow me to assign workstations and equipment to employees, read bar codes, create custom reports, etc. I don't necessarily need it to auto-discover all items on my network. I am looking to see what others are using out there and if they like it or not.

How big of a network / business are you talking about?

Okay, I recently bought some employee attendance software called My biz attendence. Well, it sucks. I manage a small business of about 40 employees and I need a basic software to manage attendance and a few misc things. I know I could use outlook or something but I don't have time to set that up.

Hi,

i work for an internet business which sells on eBay. at the moment we take a lot of phone orders. obviously with eBay it keeps a record of the order on there, but with phone orders it involves so much paperwork being produced and filing, so when customers ring up to query something from a while back im having to go through loads of paperwork to find their order.

I was wondering if anyone can recommend a suitable piece of software that i can use where i would just enter details of their order, for example name, delivery address, items ordered and price etc etc. It would ideally be so if someone rings up and asks about a previous order i can open this program, click a few buttons and their order is in front of me.

im not fussed about keeping inventorys of stock levels and all that, don't particularly want anything over complicated, im good with computers and quite knowledgable but would prefer something simple.
another way i was thinking was to do my own "intranet" and have a form on there which i fill in and then it saves it on the computer so me and my two colleagues (which will become more as we expand) can view it.

i also looked into using microsoft access but not a fan of it.

any ideas would be much appreciated!!!
many thanks
Arron

Hi Arron, welcome to the board!

I would recommend Microsoft Access, especially if you have it. Of course this could be done in Excel (which I am a fan of ) but as you grow and your information grows with your company, you'll be happy you started this in a relational database.

There are many Access guru's here and I'm not one of them. LOL! But you may want to think about changing your thread title (Thread Tools | Edit Thread) to include Access somewhere in there. Your current title is somewhat misleading. Also, you may want to check Office Online for templates, there are many you may find useful.
