Resetting my pc leads to it halting with a blank screen, even using reset button.

Q: Resetting my pc leads to it halting with a blank screen, even using reset button.

Hi guys, I think this MAY have something to do with me overclocking my CPU a while back, as I initially used a tweaking program, which I soon learned just messes with your CPU so I did it myself in BIOS. Prior to me doing it myself My computer stopped resetting as it should do eaither by hitting the reset button or doing it through XP/Vista. I use both OS so I know this is a hardware issue, ovbiously. If anyone has a fix it for this it would be greatly appreciated. When I do reset it though, everything is still running, hdd is still on, monitor stays on so thats a good indication that nothing has powered off or is resetting.

Basically all I can tell yas.

Thanks

Preferred Solution: Resetting my pc leads to it halting with a blank screen, even using reset button.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello

For the last two weeks, whenever I tried to wake my desktop computer from sleep mode I was presented the sign on screen and within a split second by a blank screen. For the last 5 years it had worked perfectly.

I knew there could be a plethora of reasons for this, so I began by disabling ASUS's AI nap. After this I decided to update the ATI Radion HD 4300 driver.  I asked it to search the internet and went for a coffee. Ten Minutes later,  much to my amazement, it had installed the new driver without me asking! There was a warning message which I could not decipher.

I then ran Norton to scan the entire computerand went for another coffee.  On return found this:

Hi all, just wondering if anyone could throw me a few ideas. After a reset the screen resolution will change from 1680x1050 to 1280x1024. This doesn't happen after every reset and when it does happen, the screen will be 1680x1050 (for 3-4 seconds) then when the icons appear the resolution will change to 1280x1024.

As far as I can remember, I believe this has happend ever since I downloaded the Final Fantasy 7 demo which only played in 640 x (cant remember). At one point I accidentally hit the start menu key and due to the game running in such a low resolution etc there was no way to manually shut down the computer due to the mouse not responding in task manager, alt+f4 having no affect on the game etc. I've got rid of the demo but this problem still persists.

Any ideas?

Make sure that you did not accidentally hit the Function key sequence to shut off the primary display.

When you boot it, can you see the POST screen from the Bios, before it boots into Windows?

I was playing around with my overclocking settings on my recently new asus p5n-d. It has ai tuning which gives me the option to overclock 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%. I decided after playing around with other overclock settings ( got up around 2.66 ghz without heat issues) to go for the 20% and see how it would run. I picked it, saved to bios and restarted. Upon restarting my bios updated itself (flashed?) and then restarted. Upon restart I have no display yet everything appears to be running. If i remove my ram i get the usual ram beeps, no beeps if i remove my video card. I pulled my cmos battery a few times leaving it out for hours to no avail. My monitor also claims to be getting no input. Any help would be greatly appreaciated.

So basically I would like to start off by saying I messed up bad and I don't think this is fixable. I wanted to reset my computer on windows 8.1 and it said insert a windows media key so I did and it started to reset at first fine then I decided I no longer needed the disc so I ejected the disc whilst it was resetting. After that I tried booting it back and it said, diagnosing your PC, starting repairs after this It would load a screen which says 'Automatic Repair couldn't repair your PC' 'Log filr D:\Windows\System32\Logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt', from here I'm given the option to go into advanced options and reset again this time round when I insert the disc it says it is not valid. I tried booting up from the disc and its telling me to reinstall windows and type the windows 8 key but I don't have one my computer came pre set with windows 8 installed and a disc, so I cancelled out of the install and clicked 'repair your computer' again it gives me the option to reset I click reset and i'm given another error which says 'unable to reset your PC. A required drive partition is missing'.

My friend recommended me to post my issue on here for a solution however I really hope I don't have to buy another windows 8 key because at the moment I don't have a job and need my computer working I have no clue what to do and I'm very worried if this will ever be fixed.

Thanks in advance!

Hi, please bear with me, i've never tried something like this to troubleshoot b4.Basically, at seemingly random times, my screen goes black and i have to hit the Reset button on my Chasis to get back to normal functionality. The trick is, i never get an Event in the Event Viewer to indicate the cause of the issue - i'm inclined to believe it's either a Norton problem, or some form of Malware.I followed the listed instructions as well as i could, however, i had some issues with GMER (even when disabling AV for it), so i do not have a scan to post from that. Here is the DDS stuff, however - AV didn't seem to cause any hiccups with it, as far as i could tell, but if you need a fresh scan with AV off, just holler. As i've not had any black screens since my initial post and i'm having surgery monday with an expected 2 week hospital stay (not my best planning, posting late thursday knowing of the coming surgery, but i get nervous about computer security stuff and sort of panicked), i'm not quite sure what the best option would be in regards to this thread....If someone is already involved with looking at the logs and stuff, i leave it up to you as to how you would like to proceed, given this new information - whatever you feel is best is fine with me, and thank you for looking into my issue. If noone has started yet, please delete this thread - i'll make a new one after the hospital stay if needed. Also, i'm starting to think this is more likely a Driver, Hardware, or Norton issue, not Malware..... tho i could be wrong.

ANy help why it dows this.
The pc restarts fine and shutsdown ok too!!!

A:Reset button goes to windows did not shutdown properly screen

That is perfectly normal. Basically, it causes an abrupt shutdown, meaning that unlike a proper shutdown files and documents are not saved properly to disk. The reset button is only meant to be used in the event of a system crash where there is no other means of shutting down and restarting because the mouse and keyboard are inoperative. I do sometimes use it if I am trying to catch the option to boot to my Linux disk (F11 on my system) and miss it.

My Lenovo x270 was having some start up issues which eventually prompted me to reset the CMOS battery and bios (as shown here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4XA9eFV0ao ). That worked, and I was able to start up my laptop as normal, go into bios, set the time, etc. But when I had to restart my laptop after installing a new bios update, the laptop crashed. I tried doing a CMOS battery/bios reset, but that hasn't helped. The power is fine: power button goes green, keyboard lights up. But the screen stays black, and the laptop plays a weird tune (not bios beeps?), as in this video I recorded (at the end): https://youtu.be/1S2g7mpIx6U  I tried the hard power reset button on the bottom of my laptop too, but that didn't help. I also tried connecting a monitor via HDMI and starting up the laptop then, but the same thing happens: black screen, weird been song.If I press the fn key, it plays a beep song too... Any ideas what's wrong?

A:Laptop black screen after BIOS update, resetting CMOS battery/bios, and power reset

I literally despise Lenovo BIOS updates, and avoid them like the plague unless absolutely required. There is a Android App called Lenovo PC Diagnostics (available in the Google Play Store) that can listen to that code, tell you what the error code is, and the solution. You should be able to press and hold the Fn key and get the code to repeat while the Lenovo PC Diagnostics App is set to Acquire.    I tried it using the tone in your video, and it returned the code: 0285    (TCG- compliant functionality-releated error (might be the TPM initialization failure)  but unfortunately the "Action" it suggests is "Replace the system board (motherboard) (service provider only)    You may want to run the diagnostic yourself to confirm just to be sure. I presume that you cannot get into the bios or boot by any means to attempt to re-flash the BIOS, so you may need to contact support.  Best of luck,

Every time the PC restarts, it will hang on a blank black screen after POST. I have to hold down the power button for a hard reset, after which it will boot normally. I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions about what might be causing this issue and if there might be something I can do to remedy it. Thanks.

Hello,
My problem is that my monitor (Samsung SyncMaster205BW) 20in. diagonal, was displaying a horizontal stretched view. A day or so ago I changed my OS from Windows Vista to Windows XP. When running Visa the picture was very good indeed, and in proportion. Since using XP the display isn't correct with a stretched horizontal view and large print, fuzzy appearance etc. etc.. I looked in the Display/Settings/Advanced/Monitor...which gave 'Default monitor'as a label, (should this not have labelled it Samsung etc....?)and with Properties grayed out. The Adaptor tab brought up the Adaptor and the Tab List all modes, with one of these selected. I was looking at the Properties of this Adaptor, then Device usage at the bottom, with the selection of 'Use... or do not use...' and unfortunately I might have left it on the Do Not Use, closed the windows, shutdown and went to lunch, .... and now I have now operating screen. How can I get this back?
At the time I was looking for the correct driver for using XP because I guess the operating driver at that time was for Vista
I would be very grateful for any help.

A:Solved: Monitor problem: on-off button is lit up, but the screen is blank (black)

on boot up hit f8 to boot up in safe mode and then change your resolution back to something normal so you can see it on your monitor. then get the latest driver for your video card, those new wide screen monitors don't use normal resolutions that are in the default drivers for windows xp (especially if you haven't done updates).

However, if I unplug the Case Power Connector for Push-button from the motherboard and start the system by shorting the two power pins on the motherboard ....then the system starts normally and the display works.

Built my computer about 7 months ago, worked fine up until now.

My PC randomly freezes completely and suddenly. Task manager wont open and I have to reset it, however even after reset it takes forever to boot and it goes straight to the UEFI and not to Windows, even if I exit the UEFI it won't boot into Windows 8.1 until I shut it off completely then turn it back on. My M4 64g SSD (Windows Drive) doesn't show up in the boot menu but does in device manager/my computer, however this is not a new thing. (I suspected the SSD might be failing) The freezing started after having my computer off for 5 days (it's never been shut off for more than a day or two). I can think of no other unusual things I might have done or changed.

So far I have tried...

* Resetting the BIOS overclocks to "default" (they have been stable)

* Running memtest86 for a period of 5 hours with no errors.

* Running MSI Kombuster burn-in-test for about half an hour. (This was happening while playing Battlefield 4 (I thought it might be the game/GPU) but it happens even while watching VLC or browsing Firefox and Chrome on their own. (Didn't crash)

* Freeing up space in the Windows SSD. (It had less than 1GB, now it has 18GB and the problem still occurs.)

* Checked all temperatures of CPU/GPU/Drives/Mobo, nothing is overheating. Under GPU stress test.

It doesn't lag or give warnings it just locks up.

There were several large .tmp files taking up space (4 - 7gb) in my win... Read more

Hi, I am having a problem with booting up my computer. Everytime I turn the computer on, the HDD light comes on but the power light doesn't. When I press the reset button, everything starts working and the computer boots up. I think the problem might be the wires that get plugged into the motherboard. I don't know how to correctly install them and the manual that came with the motherboard doesn't help at all. I have a GA-7IXE4 motherboard with 1000 MHZ AMD and 256 MB RAM. If anybody could assist me with this problem, please do so. If anybody knows how the wires are suppose to be plugged into the motherboard correctly, please let me know because I think that might be the main problem. Thanks.

I understand that you tried to perform a factory reset on your HP x360 - 11-p122nr notebook and it came up with an error message. Don't worry as I have a few steps which should resolve your concern,

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details.

Have you made any software or hardware changes on the PC?

Do you get any error message on the screen?

Have you performed any troubleshooting steps before posting this on HP Support Forums?

In the meantime, let's try these steps here:

Perform a Hard Reset on the Notebook.

Run the System diagnostics test as well as extensive test on the Hard drive and Memory from F2

Depending on the test results, If all the test passes, I would suggest you perform a System recovery using the partition available on your PC. Doing this will wipe off everything and set the PC back to the original factory conditions. So, please remember to backup your data. If for some reason if this fails, which means either the partition is corrupted or system file is missing.

I?ve tried all the youtube tutorials (most solutions revoling around the cmd prompt) that as well isn?t working.

Please help me. I need this computer for school. I?ve tried everything. Is there any secret solution for an easy fix? Thank you!

Hello,
After putting my computer into sleep mode last night, I was unable to get it to boot into windows this morning. When i pressed the power buttong, everything turn on and working (all fans are functional, gpu power led is on, all hard drives & cd drives are functional. But the problem is, the screen to my monitor is blank. I also noticed that my usb aren't working (mouse connection light isn't on). I tried a soft power off by holding down the power button but no luck. The system does not turn off no matter how long I hold it. The only way to turn it off is by pulling the power supply cord or turning the power supply switch off.

My pc build:

AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz Socket AM3+ 6 core processor
ASUS ENGTX 560 DCII OC/2DI/1GD5 Geforce GTX 560

Prolimatech PRO Panther 120mm CPU Cooler
NZXT Phantom PHAN-001RD case

THE PROBLEM: Computer turn on with everything running as usual, but shows blank screen on monitor. Cannot soft power off by pressing power button.

Things I tried:

Clear CMOS by removing battery and switching pins
Running with 1 4GB RAM instead of 2, move the ram around the slots & alternate which Ram is used.
Check my monitor by testing it with another computer
Tried pulling the PS plug and holding the computer power button for 1 min
Test the GPU with another computer & it runs fine

Hello,

Is it possible that you can test with another compatible PSU? I would strongly suggest doing so.

Also try the following steps:
?Make sure that the (internal) speaker is connected to the motherboard
?Remove all memory and attempt to boot the PC
?You should get the no memory beep errors

If the Power Supply is in working order and no beeps are present then it can be indicative of a faulty motherboard.

For troubleshooting purposes it may be a good idea to remove the components from the case and bench test to rule out a short.

On my Yoga 370 I have the middle button function set to be a middle click.  Frequently after either a Windows 10 update or a Lenovo update, the middle click function stops working.  Lenovo Vantage will still show the middle click function selected, it just doesn't work (trackpoint scrolling does work).  This usually resets back to the intended middle click function after a few reboots, but seemingly randomly after at least a few days or weeks of not working.  Anyway to get this functionality back more reliably?

How to Factory Reset Windows10 or upgraded to Windows10 from Windows7 or 8.
This is also a FIX for the ERROR: There was a problem resetting your PC.
This fix is only for Legit Authorized Copies of Windows 7, 8, or 10.
Hey all, I upgraded to Win10 from Win8.1 when it was released for free upgrades in 2015. It is now 2016 and I wanted to Factory Reset my PC so I can start fresh again. I attempted to do it from Settings/Update and Security/Recovery/Reset this PC as suggested by Microsoft but I received and error saying "There was a problem resetting your PC. No changes were made." After searching the web I found many different fixes but they all seems so involved. Making a boot flash drive or burning a DVD and use their software... There is an awesome tutorial on this forum called Windows 10 Clean Install but I like to KISS when I can (Keep It Simple Stupid) so I decided to check with Microsoft.com before I started that process.
THE SIMPLE FIX I FOUND THAT WORKED FOR ME:
Go to: Windows 10
Click the "Upgrade Now" button.
Follow the prompts and you're good to go.
Works with Windows 7, 8 and 10. Simple enough for me

I wasn't able to find this simple suggestion when searching the web so I felt I should post it in hopes it helps someone too

How can i restart the sound card without restarting my computer.
Sometimes programs freeze when they are using the sound card.
this means that when i go to use a program that requires sound i get and error like 'sound in use close application to enable sound'.
does anyone know of a program that will restart the sound card

A:reset sound card without resetting computer

Hi tectro.....
Welcome to TSG !

Could you tell us what version of Windows you are running. It sounds like you are having a conflict, possibly IRQ.
Go into your device manager (right click my computer/properties/device manager), look for the entry for sound. It there a ! beside it ? What do you see ?
If you are using Win 98/ME, go to start/run. Type in msinfo32. From the left side, find hardware resources/IRQ's. Click edit/select all, then edit/copy. Come back and paste the info into your reply.

Before explaining how i got here, i will explain what exactly is happening. When I boot up my computer i see the logo then text saying Preparing Automatic Repair with a loading icon. Then i would get a black screen that would sometimes show a cursor that i can use with the black screen but most times just the black screen. Eventually this black screen ca give way to Diagnosing your PC loading screen that loops endlessly

Okay this started after I downloaded the anniversary edition for Windows 10, the first time i booted up the computer i had faced the AVG Watchdog initialization bug which prevented from accessing the laptop for the few weeks as tried looking for solutions forcing me to eventually uninstall AVG through Safe mode (the only way i managed to was through turning it off and on 3 times as every other way including holding F8 had not worked). After booting up the first time without issue after removing AVG and getting some things done, I turned it off without issue then i faced this new problem which is still plaguing me. I've looked up in forums for a solution but the closest i found was just reinstalling windows and losing everything, does anyone have a solution where i can still keep my data?

A:Can't access startup screen, boot up leads to black screen

Hi Helix935 and welcome to Tenforums.

If it was less than 10 days since this happened, you might have been able to go into Settings>Recovery and rollback from the Anniversary Update. But it's been too long now.

If it's data only that you're needing to save, you could boot the system to Kyhi's rescue media and use File Explorer to copy your data over to an external drive, then perform a clean install, (or reset or refresh from within safe mode).

You will need to reinstall your personal applications after the OS is working again though.

I am not sure what's wrong, but I have uninstall nvidia drivers that gave me problems ie. 257.21, 196.21....etc. I am currently using 195.62. I am certain that it was a VGA driver problem, because it never happened again, till I decided to remove windows internet explorer and it did the black screen thing again. It restarts and instead of showing windows splash screen it shows a black screen. When I am at the black screen I can't do anything, I will have manually restart and when it boots up the second time it will load windows. It's ____ me off. I hope someone can help me here, and I appreciate it. Atm I am gonna reinstall IE 8 and let's hope for the best.

PS. I just bought this new HDD WDVELOCIRAPTOR 300GB. So it's brand new. Don't know what's going on.

A:Restart leads to black screen before windows 7 splash screen

Hmmm! Been having the same problem myself with 7 ultimate 64 bit. It only happens on a "restart". Cold boot works OK.
I just hit my reset button, get message to do startup repair or start windows normally.
Select the "normal" and all seems to work OK???????
I'd be interested if you can find a resolution to this issue. I gave up on it!!!

I cant access my router. I need to change the passwords on it, witch I redid with my internet provider company. So, no shared internet within the house.

The thing is, no reset button on the router. I was away 2 days, and later today I found out that my brother had changed something with the router previously. After that - no access to the router via usual way (enter ip in inet client). He did talked something, that he only changed one thing.
Something from TCP/IP option to Router option. Dont know under what catacory or so.

I see 2 options: reset router somehow, or contact it another way than regulary and duo to the brother changes. There is just one button on the router btw. on/off. But that dosnt seem the completely reset it.

The router itself is a Chronos Broadband Router, cant say anything more specific about it. No mark or so. Only - support NAT for IP sharing and 4-port 100Mbs Base-T Fast Ethernet Switch.
If that problem rings any bells to someone and knows how to reset it or access it, please post. Help much appreciated. Thanks!!

Hi all,

In Windows Vista I always set my start menu power button to be "Shut Down". However, every time I restart my computer, the settings do not persist - it becomes "Sleep" again. The only exception to this is when Windows Update gives me important updates - then it stays as "Shut Down", but once Windows Update is completed it becomes "Sleep" again. This is kind of irking me...any thoughts?

I've received and tested two 512 MB RAM sticks from www.memorysuppliers.com for my IBM Thinkpad A31. Currently, I have a PC2100 512 MB RAM. I want to add an additional 512 MB. Both times, installing the new RAM led to the blue screen of death (BSOD). I called Memory Suppliers and they recommended upgrading the BIOS. I did that and I still get the BSOD. Before I send the memory back for the third and last time, does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate forum, if not which one?

The system:
Dell precision M65 2 GB RAM Duo 2327Mhz
Windows xP 5.1.2600 SP3
Symantec firewall and antivirus all updates run when available (windows and virus)

History of the system - no problems.
During a trip, I loaded Ulead software that came with a polaroid camera - it has been loaded successfully on another pc.
Upon returning home the M65 went to the blue screen that said something like "trying to use unexecutable memory.... reboot" during the boot process.
After some trials I found that it would boot in safe mode with command prompt.
Further tests lead me to find it would boot normally when not on the docking port AND not attached to any USB device.
In fact if a USB device was plugged in after the boot sequence it went to the blue screen.
Thinking the Ulead software was the problem I unloaded it (before noting which version) - no change.

? What now? I'd like to backup my data which is what I most often use USB for.

Man, I'm going nuts!

I'm trying to install W7x64 onto a custom rig. Parts are a few years old but they're still good, however I'm running into a host of problems. I need some advice as to how to proceed.

Here are the relevant specs of my system....
-MoBo: Gigabyte GA-MA69GM-S2H (also has onboard ATI X1200, which doesn't officially support W7)
-CPU: AMD Athlon X2 6000+
-Video: GeForce 7200GS (PCIe)
-RAM: DDR2 800 2gb x 3chips (total of 6gb)

Here are the problems I'm running into

1) With all of the above hardware installed, W7x64 runs into a BSOD right before it loads. If I remove the GeForce card, Windows will load semi-properly. See item #2
2) With using the MoBo's onboard VC, Windows will load properly, up until the logon screen. At which point the screen is completely white, but I do have control of the mouse. Can't tell if keyboard works.
3) If I boot with the onboard VC and ONLY 1 stick of RAM (2gb, slot doesn't matter, nor does the specific chip), W7 will actually load correctly.

So.... I realize I pretty much have to invest in SOME new hardware. I just want to buy the minimum amount of components so I can run W7x64. Ultimately if I bought a new MB/CPU/VC/RAM I'd be in good shape, but my wallet would be a few hundred $$$ less.

Is my MOBO decent enough so I could just buy a new video card and be done with it (same RAM/MB/CPU)? The system's plenty fast enough (when I was running XP), it's just the headaches with W7 that's causing me to consider new parts... Read more

Basically, this is my problem:

A couple weeks ago, I was fooling around with Ubuntu 10.04 and I was trying to install it on my USB Iomega eGo External HD using my Dell Dimension E520 desktop. I told the Ubuntu Installer to not touch my internal C drive on the Dell, but apparently it didn't listen and the C drive is now screwed up.

[Side Note]: Up until now, after the BIOS loaded, I would see a list of options to boot up from, and Windows would be there. All of a sudden last night (I had not manipulated anything), that list no longer appears.

So now, when I boot up it says the following (I put it in a Code box to distinguish between errors and regular text):
Code:

error: no such device: b3bf3817-b1f7-4551-85bc-074598f64b2d
grub rescue>

So far, I have tried booting from 2 Windows XP Home Edition CDs (WinXP Home was the original OS). Both CDs have successfully loaded files, but when it says "Setup is starting Windows..." it leads to the following blue screen error:
Code:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart you... Read more

As said above in the title my computer has recently started to fail on me. Its about 3 years old and recently its been BSODing almost every 10 minutes. Games, browsers, anything you can name will cause the BSOD.

It starts with a few lines on the screen, the screen were start to stutter and will eventually lead to a BSOD. I'm quite new at the whole tech kinda thing so forgive me if I can't cooperate at times due to my incompetence.

Specs:

Windows 7 Home 64-Bit
Intel Core i7 920
12 GB of RAM
1 TB HDD
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260

If there's anything else I can give, I do have CPU-Z for more specs.

I believe that my video card might be dead, but it's only been 3 years. Also, I'd upload my dumps but I apparently dont have access(although I am the the only admin) to zipping them. If I could get some assistance with that too that'd be great.

Thanks!

EDIT: Never mind, I got it. Here are the dumps. There are quite a few. All in one day. :/

My dual installation of Windows 10 and 7 has worked well enough for three years, but has now calamitously failed to work, to the extent that the monitor is not working.
1. The only fault up until now is that when using Win 7 it has spontaneously restarted very rarely.
2. Last night I put it into sleep as usual.
3. This morning I started it up but noticed that the screen was frozen, a new feature not seen before.
4. After 10 or so seconds it spontaneously restarted.
5. It started to boot but but when it got to " Boot from DVD" it went back to the start of booting again, and kept going round in this manner for 10 minutes.
6. I switched the power off, but when I switched it back on, the computer did not even start the screen up.

Originally I thought it was a software fault, but this seems more like hardware. The power supply is only a year old , and I am thinking motherboard failure. Does anyone have an opinion? Where should I start in diagnosing this problem?

If anyone needs it I can supply a list of the component makers etc, but in order to keep the post short I have omitted to do so.

Thanks in advance for any help, insights given.

A:Gradually escalating failure leads to screen not operating.

From what you are saying, you cannot even get to the screen where you choose whether to boot Win 7 or Win 10, is that correct ?

I suspect it is either a boot sector problem on the hard drive, or it is a hard drive mechanical failure. In both cases, it will fail to boot up.

The only solution I could think of is to do a upgrade install of both Win 7 and Win 10 again. Since installing only 1 OS will obliterate the boot sector. Maybe it will detect the existence of the other OS, but maybe not.

If you want to rescue the data first, you can burn a Ubuntu LiveCD. Boot with it, don't install, use it Live, and you can see the contents of the hard drive. Then you can copy off the data to a USB thumb drive.
