Ideapad Z580 - External monitor stopped working

Q: Ideapad Z580 - External monitor stopped working

I've been running this Z580 for a year or so, and updated to Windows 10 a couple of months ago. Both the laptop display and an external monitor (HPw1907 vga) have been working fine. The other day, the external monitor just stopped working. I check the device manager and the Intel HD Graphics 4000 display adapter is disabled, due to a Code 43. I have tried rolling back to an earlier restore point, I've uninstalled and reinstalled several versions of the Intel graphics adapter, up through the current compatible one. The most recent display adapter driver from Intel is apparently not hardware compatible with this adapter. The funny thing, is that the driver wants to work! On booting, while the black and white Lenovo splash screen is displayed, with the little circular Windows logo circling around, I can move the cursor back and forth between monitors. As soon as the screen turns blue (I assume with Windows drivers loading) the external monitor blanks out and I'm back to one screen. Based on that behavior, I'm wondering if it's not a display driver that is specfically the problem, since I've loaded up the latest drivers several times, but if maybe a recent Windows update has sneaked in a driver or component for something else that is causing the Intel driver to crash. Any thoughts? Back in earlier versions of Windows, you could have the system load one component at a time during boot, so you could check for incompatibilities. So, if the display crashes, I could experiement with disabling other services to see what would happen. Anybody know how to boot up with this feature enabled in W10? Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello, I had a z580, and the screen broke. Being a 5ish year old laptop, I decided to just remove the screen and use it connected to an external monitor. However, when I boot to bios using the novo button, nothing is displayed on the external monitor. I believe it is trying to display on the internal monitor, which is now gone. Switching to the VGA port on my monitor comes back with "No signal". My question is, how can I get the bios to show on an external monitor through the VGA port? Is there a certain key combination I have to press while in bios? Thank you!

I have the USBc to HDMI connector from Dell, to connect my XPS13 to a second LG monitor.
I have been using it without problems for 2 years. I use it every day. Same setup.
Since friday 29/12 it stopped working.
I tried to connect my laptop to different monitors. I did driver updates and even tried to roll back my Intel driver. I disabled the WIFI. (and tried putting it on airplane mode). But nothing helps.
I guess some of those latest BIOS updates, HD driver update, ... caused the problem.
Can somebody please help. It's urgent. I need my laptop+second screen for my work.

I have a Windows 10 laptop and an external monitor. The monitor was working perfectly for a few weeks, until one day I switched on the laptop to find that the monitor was no longer working. Going to 'Display Settings' only showed one monitor, and pressing 'Detect' said 'Didn't detect another display'.

After updating all drivers, then purchasing new leads and adapters for the monitor, I still couldn't get it to work. Then I stumbled upon the 'Hardware and devices' troubleshooter which, after restarting my computer, made it work.

Less than a week later, I just restarted my machine and suddenly it's not working again. This time, the troubleshooter isn't fixing it. Every time, it just says to restart my computer to finish applying updates/drivers but restarting doesn't help.

Anyone have ideas how I can fix this?

Cheers

My laptop Lenovo Flex 2-14 has been working fine with multiple displays for 2 years. A few days ago, it stopped recognizing the HDMI output. Notes:The Intel Graphics driver is the latestWindows drivers are the latestIssue:1) When the external monitor is plugged in, I cannot open any folders or the windows explorer. As soon as I unplug the external monitor, the folders can open.2) The Intel HD Graphics control panel's interface is not usable as can be seen in the screenshot below. I have tried restarting, but that does not help. Unplugging the external monitor does not help either. It seems to be permanent. When I click on other menu items of the Graphics control panel such as "Audio settings", the whole screen is blank.  Has anyone else had this issue and found a solution to it?Intel HD Graphics Control Panel - Lenovo Flex 2-14

3 out of 4 of my usb ports have quit working.  What can I do?

Mod's Edit: Edited model number.

A:Ideapad z580; usb ports not working

Hi kitcharles ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

When did the issue started ?
Thinking that maybe some setting / drivers changes caused it and you can just do system restore to jump back to a previous restore date as initial step.

Would there be any yellow or black downarrow mark on Device Manager .
Try to show hidden devices in device manager .
Under Universal Serial Bus controllers for USB Mass Storage Devices  , right clcik and uninstall then restart the pc.

You do have 2 USB (ver3.0) port on the left , and 2 USB (ver2.0) on the right based on the user manual (page5).
Which is not working ? Rare that all 3 would go out at the same time but if it does reflect the hardware systemboard controllers for the issue.

If same issue , attempt a power drain and set BIOS on Defaults .
Shutdown and unplug the ac charger, remove the battery and press power down for 15 seconds to drain.
(if you have a USB keyboard and mouse to test, attach it )

Put back the battery and ac charger and turn on using the Novo key (item 6 page2)  instead.
Novo menu apears and choose BIOS set up , f9 to default and f10 save and exit
(would the usb keyboard work tapping on caps/ num locks , usb mouse lit if functional )

Update us how it goes.

Regards

Greetings everyone!
Here is the problem, sadly, i am not the only one that has it- So, i have this perfect z580 ideapad which got a BIOS update before few years... and it started running slow, and some other problems appeared. So i want my old BIOS back. The new one is the 5FCN95WW... but sadly i have no backup of the old BIOS, i think it is 5FCN34 or 35WW. I saw tons of information around the internet, many posts here in the Lenovo forums, i've downloaded countless files, used many programs, even backed up my own BIOS and nothing.
I haven't seen even 1 solution from point A to point B for "How to backup and then flashback to the old bios again if needed", so please, tell me what can i do.
1: How can i obtain a file of the old good original BIOS
2: I have 2 Lenovo z580 laptops and just one of them is with the new BIOS, the other one has the old BIOS - can i somehow make a file of the old BIOS, transfer it to the other laptop and then flash back to it.

Thank you in advance, i hope to see a good answer these days, which will save me much troubles.

If you are still running Windows 8 or 10 this might work.Press and hold the shift key and choose the restart option on your laptop. It will bring up your repair/recovery options. You can also access it by bringing up your charms bar(moving your mouse to the right bottom corner and scrolling up, some can be a little touchy) and selecting "Change PC Settings". This should allow you to access your repair/recovery options.  I can't remember if it is 8 or 8.1 that you have to selected general options first.  I hope this helps.  Good Luck!

My new Ideapad 320-I7IKB worked great for one week with an external HDMI Samsung S27E310 monitor. Then the external monitor started blinking off for about one second, then back on. It blinked off every few minutes. It started happening so often it became unusable. This external monitor worked flawlessly for six months with an HP laptop.  I can move the cable back and forth between my Ideapd and the HP Laptop - works great with HP, blinks with the Lenovo.  I updated all of the Lenovo drivers, did not help.  I called Lenovo support, they bumped me to third tier, to their software group, and they wanted $69 to work on it (again, one week old Ideapad still under warranty).I otherwise really like this Lenovo, I wish it would work with an external monitor.  Looks like I will either need to return this Ideapad or start purchasing random new external monitors hoping that one of them will be compatible with Lenovo's HDMI driver.

The touchpad stopped working a few weeks back, thought it might fix itself so I've left it and been using a mouse through the USB. Then that was playing up so decided to look for a solution to the touchpad issue... Read on here about it being the driver, so I updated that through the website but then whenever the touchpad was touched, the laptop would go to a blue screen with the stop code: KMODE EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED and then 'What failed: ETD.sys I have now done something so that this doesn't happen when the touchpad is used (not entirely sure what I did), so I'm not getting a blue screen, but it still doesn't work to move the pointer!! It says the driver is there and all uptodate when I look through the device manager.. Thank you!

this IdeaPad 510-15isk of mine the built-in screen is defective so i attached a VGA monitor to the VGA port. i learned somewhere that when a laptop senses, on bootup, that there is an external monitor connected it should send its display to the external device. my laptop doesn't do that and instead it uses the built-in display which i cannot see because it's defective. i also try to get into the CMOS settings using that Novo button but it since it shows the display using the built-in LCD screen i am unable to check nor configure the CMOS to direct all output to external display (which i'm assuming is controlled by the CMOS). since finding how to goto the CMOS settings on this laptop (that Novo button is too small is not well labelled) i thought there might be some hidden feature that would allow me to force the display to go to the external device. btw, the F10 hotkey that is supposed to toggle the display output doesn't do anything. appreciate any help.

I'm looking to buy an external monitor for my Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13 (Intel Core i5/Intel HD 4000). More specifically, I would like to drive a 2560x1440 monitor. By looking under the generic external monitor properties in Windows, I discovered the maximum supported resolution is 2560x1600 at 60 Hz for the Intel HD 4000. However, the laptop only has an hdmi port for video output, but I cannot find the supported hdmi standard versions (i.e. if it is 1.3 or 1.4) to figure out the maximum refresh rate I could get. On another thread on these forums (here) some user suggested that the supported hdmi versions should be 1.3 and 1.4, while other users reported that they managed to drive a 2560x1440 monitor but they did not state the resulting refresh rate. How can I proceed to discover the maximum refresh rates I could get with a 2560x1440 resolution? Secondly, I would like to ask if it is possible to use an usb 3.0 to display port adapter to drive the monitor at 60 Hz, and if I could have some suggestions on which type of adapter I should buy in that case.Thank you for your help in advance.

I tried to download the driver for my monitor but they only have it until windows 8...

The touchscreen on my Flex 15 stopped working. I am not sure exactly when, but in the last few months.  I am already on Win10, and it has worked fine since the Win10 upgrade over a year ago.  In Device Manager, I can see the HID Touch Screen entry.  I tried uninstalling and deleting it, followed by a restart.  Reinstalled itself on start-up, but no joy.  It claims to be working.   I have seen other similar posts saying to delete entries under Mice... but I don't see any Touch Screen entries there.Interestingly, I see most of the drivers have Event dates of 2-Jul 2017, saying "Device migrated". I am suspecting some delightful Micorsoft "improvement" on that date may have been the cuplrit, but I also feel like the touch screen may have been working after that date.  Unfortunately, I don't use the touch screen very often, but I DO need it now and then. Thoughts?

Last night I ran into a problem concerning my ability to charge my laptop. After my laptop had restarted itself (probably because of a windows update) my battery was close to dying. But when I plugged in the adapter, sadly there was no sign of it actually charging my battery. Of course the first thing I did was check if all the cables were actually plugged in, which they were. I also checked the forums to see if anyone else had this problem and I tried unplugging the adapter, removing the battery and holding the power button for ~30 seconds. Unfortunately, this didn't work for me. Since my battery is nearly empty I cannot really try to install anything to help solve this problem, as has been suggested on this forum to other users. I wouldn't mind buying a new adapter, but since it so suddenly stopped working I'm wondering if the adapter is even the problem. I had been able to succesfully charge my battery only a few hours before this problem occured. Also I haven't noticed any sparks/smoke/anything that is a clear indicator that something isn't right, coming from the ac. I apologise if this question has been asked before. Any help would be kindly appreciated!

Here's what happened: my touch screen worked normally on Friday, then I went away for the weekend and didn't use my laptop and when I started working on Monday I realized my touch screen didn't work. Here's what I have done to try to fix it:1. Restarted the computer2. Disabled & enabled the HID-compliant touch screen in the Device Manager 3. Disabled & enabled the Generic PnP Monitor in the Device Manager4. Checked for driver updates for the touch screen (it said the most up-to-date driver is already installed)5. Tried to roll back the driver for the touch screen, but that button was greyed out, so it wasn't an option6. Unstalled the most recent Windows updates (there were a couple from the previous week)7. Unstalled the HID-compliant touch screen (but when I restarted the computer, there it was again)8. Talked to the IT guy for my work, who said I did everything he would have done, and suggested that I write a post on this forum. I saw a suggestion in another thread that the driver for the touch screen could be corrupted, but I didn't really see any instructions on how to unstall/reinstall the driver itself. I would like to try that if someone could tell me how that's done. This computer is not even a week old. When this first happened I saw that on the bottom side of the laptop were two switches, one for the battery and I guess one for the touch screen, by the way there is not literature on what so ever, and after flipping the switch the touch screen worked perfectly for about a day. Now it has stopped working again, but the switch is in the correct position. All of my drivers are up to date. I am so frustrated with this. the mouse works fine, it is just the touch screen. Please, someone tell me you have had a similar issue with this series of the ideapad and that you have been able to fix it, I really don't want to have to send it in as I use it everyday for work.

Hi eking4044, welcome to the forum,

Both of those "switches" on the bottom are for the battery. One is a spring loaded switch to open battery, after you push the other one into the open position. This is how you remove the battery, and have nothing to do with the Touch Screen.

Did you delete any of the software that came with your system? The easiest thing you could do is backup your user files to a CD, or some external hard drive, then reset your system using the system recovery. See page 20 of the user guide for the recovery routine. Make sure you have a backup of your user files, before attempting the recovery, as it will set up your system like new. This should solve your problem, but if it doesn't, please post back with further information.

Cheers

Hi, I have a fairly new (3 month old) lenovo ideapad 320 laptop. Yesterday the keyboard completely stopped working. I have attached a remote keyboard to log on and type this. I have updated windows and lenovo. I have gone into lenovo solution centre and completed all hardware scans etc. I have rebooted numerous times. I have done everything that the forums recomend but no fix. The only thing I haven't done in open up the back and remove the battery  and turn the computer off and on, as that does not seem like something easy and I am worried I will break something. This is extreamly frustrating and hoping that someone can tell me what to do?kind regards Y
