Lenovo Thinkpad with "plugged in, not charging"

Q: Lenovo Thinkpad with "plugged in, not charging"

My Lenovo Thinkpad is not charging the battery and shows a "plugged in, not charging" message. I have a pending Bios update that won't update since the batteries are not charged. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this? Is there a way to update the Bios with just power plugged in?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

What charging threshold do you have set in either Lenovo companion or Lenovo Vantage app? For me I have it set at 70% and 80%. In other words my battery wont charge until it falls below 70% and it will stop at 80%. So if its at 75% for example it will show "plugged in, not charging"

My Lenovo G50-30 laptop has suddenly developed a funny problem.  When battery charger is introduced while laptop is on it says "plugged in but not charging" and battery keeps reducing, however battery charges when laptop is switched off. The problem has started happening from approx a 3-4 weeks back. My battery was under warranty and was replaced by Lenovo authorised center Jogeswari (West), Mumbai, India BUT still issue reamins the same.  Service center installed a software called OKO care which randomly allowed charging three times while laptop was ON. However this also did not permanently solve my problem and returned back to same issue hence un-installed software. Then had tried couple of other lenovo softwares (vantage, forgot name of anotehr one) but in vain.  Pls organise immediate help as I have exams starting September 19, 2019 and need laptop very badly for preparing and cant afford to switch off to recharge. Thank you in advance. FYI - There is no capping not to charge beyond 55-60% to safeguard battery. I have Windows 10 (64 bit OS), initial OS which came along with laptop was Windows 8.1 which automatically got upgraded to Windows 10. My laptop is always kept on auto update hence all latest updates are installed. I do not allow any unnecessary software installation.

That sounds suspiciously like the laptop is in Airport Mode, which if enabled will prevent it from charging when on, yet charge when off, just like you describe.  You can find out via a command promptRight click on start and select Command Prompt (Admin)  -or- Windows PowerShell (Admin)  depending on your system configuration. At the prompt type:  powercfg /getactivescheme    and press EnterIf it comes back with something similar to the image below showing (Airplane) as the active scheme,  then that is likely the culprit. Click on Image to expandIf you find that it is enabled, at the same command prompt window type:  control powercfg.cpl   and press Enter to open the Power control panel applet, and then check to see if Airplane Mode is set as your current power plan. As a last resort, you can also type:  powercfg ?restoredefaultschemes  to reset the Windows power schemes to their default settings.  Best of luck,

Can't charge my Lenovo Thinkpad P1 (which is 1 week old). I have run diagnostics and nothing is wrong, and the battery condition is good. "Charged threshold" is at 75% (current battery power is 36%), so it should be charging. I must have missed a setting of some sort. Anyone have a solution to fix it so the laptop will charge?Appreciate all help, thanks.

Hi, I have a 3 year old (ish) T540p which all of a sudden is giving me this message when the ac power adapter is plugged in.  I have two adapters as I have the docking station also which I normally use and neither of these adapters are working.  I have read some posts on here and tried all of the suggested actions to rectify this but none seem to be working for some reason. Funnily enough in the Lenovo Vantage application I tried to do the battery gauge reset and as soon as i set that off the laptop started to charge and got up to 100%, i left it for a good couple of hours and didn't seem to move on to the next part in the cycle which is to drain the battery so I cancelled it.  I thought that the fact that it had started to charge might have reset something but alas I'm back in the same position where I'm getting the plugged in but not charging message. I've recently updated to Windows 10 but the chargers have worked fine since, now for some reason they are not. Can anybody give me any help troubleshooting to try and sort the problem out.  Is it likely to be the battery which needs replacing or is there someting else that it could be perhaps? Thanks.

A:T540p Thinkpad plugged in but not charging

What about your battery threshold settings? When you're doing battery calibration (gauge reset), it's a common thing that your inducator stucks at some percentage of charging and discharging. I suggest you to turn off any threshold you set, turn off the machine, turn it on with no battery, then turn it off and re-set the battery. What about discharging? Is it normal? Try to discharge it to below 50% and then plug the charger.

Hello Everyone, I'm the owner of a Edge E450 (ThinkPad), i bought it 1 years ago. I have problem with my battery and it happens suddenly. When AC adapter is unplugged, the Laptop immediately die. But if the AC adapter is plugged in, the battery status "0% Plugged In, Not Charging".I'm already run Battery Gauge Reset on Power Management, and I tried to step:(1) Power off, unplug power lead, remove the battery.(2) Press power button for ~10 seconds to clear any residual charge.(3) Plug in power lead, power on (without battery).(4) Log in, let the software settle down. It discovers there is no battery.!(5) Power off, insert battery, power on again.(6) Log in, let the software settle down. Now the 'new' battery is charging!but it does not work all.  if I have to replace the battery? While the battery is still new and it happens suddenly, before the battery is very durable. Sorry for my bad english.

Hello, My recently bought Thinkpad Yoga 14 recently had this strange problem going on. The battery goes down, even when the AC cord is plugged in. The battery message says "plugged in, not charging". What exactly is the problem, and how do I fix it? The laptop came with Windows 10. Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you! ??

A:Thinkpad Yoga 14 battery "plugged in, not charging...

It isn't a problem.  The battery has a nearly full charge, so the charging turns off so as not to "cook" the battery.  If you unplug the battery and let it run down a while, then plug it in, it will charge.  I tend not to charge mine until it gets under about 70%.  A Lithium battery slowly degrades after a certain number of charges.

Have you ever set a battery charge threshold?

What happens if you let the battery discharge from the 47% in your screenshot, and then plug it in again?  Will it recharge to ~47%?  Or will it then be stuck at the new (lower) level?

Periodically, such as yesterday, my batteries stop charging while plugged in. My Thinkpad X270 HN is not even two years old, and I haven't read about any battery issues. I don't understand why this happens or what to do about it. Moreover, I'm not sure where my two batteries are or what is used first. It's quite confusing. Battery #1 will not charge beyond 51%, as I see the icon half-full and the number, yet underneath the 51% it states that battery number #1 is acutally charged at 100% already. And underneath the information about battery #1 is info on battery #2, which states 5% full and not charging at all. I don't understand why these batteries either don't charge at all or only charge up to a certain percentage.Again, I'm not sure how these batteries work either apart or together. I'm assuming the battery icon on the taskbar is battery #1, and when it's lost its charge, or juice, I assume battery #2 kicks in, but, again, I'm not sure how it works. I have no idea where to find the icon for battery #2.Finally, in order to change the batteries -- if need be -- do I have to change both at once, and can they be changed without bringing the laptop into a repair shop? Meaning, if I try myself, do I unscrew the bottom and simply replace them? Thanks,PPenguin

I have a refurbished X230 that works great aside from this issue. I noticed it would not charge, but when the computer ran out of battery and shut down, I plugged it back in and it *did* charge, that time. I then tried a few things including taking the battery out, which turned the computer off, which then allowed it to charge. When I plug the AC adapter in, the battery light in the back will blink twice in green, then go back to red (if battery is low) or remain off (if battery level is normal).  Yesterday night I turned the computer off, plugged it in, turned it on, and saw it was charging. It charged to 97% and then showed up as "plugged in, not charging" this morning. If the computer is charging and I unplug it, then plug it back in, it will not resume charging. All of this leads me to think it isn't a hardware problem with the charger or battery itself (which holds a charge just fine). I also tried a different charger I had for my old T420 which fit, but had the same issue. Any advice?

I've got an old G40-70 running Windows 10. I think the power area was damaged and now when the laptop is plugged in, it says "plugged in not charging" and the power slowly drains away. Then when the laptop is turned off, it will charge back up to 100%. Then when I turn the laptop on, it will say "plugged in, not charging" and the power will drain out. I've tried taking the battery out but the laptop won't start (when plugged in). I've bought a new power adapter/charger so I think its something to do with the laptop. If I bought a new power jack, would it need to be soldered in? Thanks.

I have been using my lenovo Y50-70 since the past 1 year to play games like witcher 3 and Fallout 4. Recently, when I started playing Metal Gear Solid 5 and Battlefield 1, I have been facing some issues with the battery. I usually keep the charger plugged in while gaming, Since the laptop needs to be plugged in for better performance.  But recently, my laptop automatically stops charging randomly in between eventhough it is connected and the power button and the charging led start blinking.  As soon as i unplug the charger and put it back on, it starts charging again. But after sometime again stops charging and lights start blinking. I've noticed that this happens faster when I'm playing a game vs. when I'm doing something else. I'm scared about the damage it would do to the battery. Please suggest something. Thank you !

I just bought a new Lenovo Y7000 laptop and I love it, it's great. Except when plugged in it usually says "plugged in, not charging" when I hover over the battery icon. For example for the past few hours it's been stuck at 98% and saying that. Also if it does charge it charges super slowly. I updated the drivers for the battery and I am unable to updat the bios. I tried using Lenovo Vantage to update the bios, and when that failed I downloaded "System Update" and that also failed to download and install the bios update. What should I do to solve this problem, cause I'm otherwise very happy with this laptop so far? Thanks!

I have Y500 and I experience the issue from time to time. Usually, I power off the laptop, dismount the battery and unplug it for some time. Mount the battery, plug it in and wait a bit before starting the laptop. 99% of the time this helps and the battery is being charged again. I tried the updates, etc. But it didn't help at all.My guess, just "learn to like it"

hi Zadeth,

Welcome to the Forums.

Can you try to:
1. Turn off the machine and remove the AC adapter and battery
2. Hold the power button for 10secs then plug the AC adapter back in.
3. Turn the computer ON and when it gets to Windows, slide the battery back in place and observe the charge.

Alternatively, try to use the battery charge until it asks you to plug the AC adapter and observe if the charge goes all the way to 100%.

Let me know your findings
