Working Offline/Online Offline Files Registry Key - Windows 7

Q: Working Offline/Online Offline Files Registry Key - Windows 7

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help. I have been Googling all over the place last couple of days and looking through hundreds of regkeys but cannot find the answer.

We have 1800 PC's using Offline files to a NAS location. Even though the Group Policy is set to force PC's Offline no matter what the latency value. I have noticed some PC's that have Offline files enabled but are set to work online. Maybe set manually
before the GPO was applied. Anyway I was wondering if there is a way to detect on numerous PC's whether a PC is set to work Offline or Online? I have been looking to see if a regkey changes when the Work Offline / Online button is pressed on the file menu
of the redirected folder.

I have found a key that changes if you hit the button Work Online/ Offline button
manually HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\NetCache\OnlineTransitionLog Value - (name of nas share) but this clears when the PC is rebooted or logged out and does not reappear unless you do the switch again manually.
This will not work when I try to scan all the PC's.

Help would be much appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm sitting with a big issue at a customer and ask for your help.
- 3x Windows 2008 R2 file servers configured in DFS
- approx. 500x Windows 7 clients (Laptops)
- 3x network shares, Common1, Common2 and Homefolder.
- "Offline Files" and "Folder Redirection" enabled for entire user profile.
- Everything is controlled by GPOs and there are no login scripts.
Due to some faulty settings in the client GPO and the fact that the "Common" shares was set to allow Offline Caching of files and folders, the majority of clients now suffer from sync issues and conflicts.
Most of the conflicted files are located in the users home folder, but some users are also seeing the same issues with files located on the "Common" shares. The users themselfes are not allowed to enable Offline Files as this is disabled by GPOs.
The only folders that should be treated as Offline Files are the ones in the users home folder.
A new set of GPOs have been created that correctly set up "Offline Files" and "Folder Redirection". These are linked to a test-OU and the computers and users applied to that OU are not suffering from the problems above.
When we move a client, the cache will be deleted and all non-sync'd work will be lost.
Today we manually look at every users sync center and try to resolve the conflicts before we move them to the new OU. This is extremely time consuming when... Read more

Is it possible to configure offline folders so that even when the computer is connected to the network the offline folder is still used.

What we want to acheive is for the notebook user to always use a local copy of their data but to also have an up to date copy on the server.

If i need to clarify anything or provide more details then please let me know.

I have some new systems running windows 7 pro that we want to configure to have a folder that is located on our file server available offline. So we have a share
\\Servername\Sharename and then a folder inside of that \Folder this is the folder that we want to add to the offline files cache. This share is also mapped for all users as Q:\
I have read every post on the internet but still cannot get this to work. It seems very straightforward and if I do it manually by logging in and selecting the folder then right click and say "make available offline" it works. But I have
like 40 of these systems and want to push it from the server.
I have a mix of 2008 R2 and 2012 ent DC's in my environment single domain running a "Windows Server 2003" Domain Functional level
I created a separate OU and placed all the systems computer object in it then created a new GPO and linked it to the OU. I also created a security group and added all the systems as members and assigned the group to the GPO under Security Filtering.
I also have the Authenticated Users group listed there as well.
In the GPO I have enable the administratively assigned Offline files under the Computer Configuration and added the UNC path to the folder I want to make available
\\Servername\Sharename\Folder and also enabled the ensure all subfolders are available option. I have also added the same folder in the user configuration policy.

Please excuse any shortcomings new to this, I have a system Windows NT Workstation V4.0 SP3 which has been running fine, but, I had'nt used it for a while. Went on line all was fine shut down attempted reboot, crash/trap. To cut it short I found that the /config/system file was corrupt/broken also the .alt version. After much effort, used the one from repair folder to get up but does not reflect original system, probably the second NT environment system on disk., mishap I know.

I have retained the config/system and .alt files can anyone suggest how I can repair this file offline then replace the current system file with the repaired system hive. Any help would be appreciated.

I reinstalled Windows and suddenly i am unable to get any windows updates. I tried to update online but when select "check for updates" it stuck on "checking for updates" and that's all. I waited about hour and a half but nothing happened. And during that time, in the Task Manager, i see a process svchost.exe with parameter -k netsvcs that loads the cpu over 50% all of the time and taking most of the RAM memory on my laptop with 2GB of RAM so i am unable to do anything else during that time. I didn't get any error messages, just "checking for updates" message.

Then i decided to try to update Windows offline and downloaded the updates with WSUS WSUS Offline Update - Update Microsoft Windows and Office without an Internet connection. But when i started the update it displayed a command prompt window and it came to the phase when it say: "Listing ids of missing updates" and it stuck in the same way when i selected "check for updates" for online update. And i see the same svchost.exe process to load the cpu in the same way and taking as much RAM.

My system drive is encrypted with TrueCrypt but i don't think this may cause problem with the windows update.

I run System Update Readiness Tool and it installed one hotfix successfully.

I run sfc scan and it didn't find any errors.

This is the CBS.log file.

A:Unable to update Windows - neither online or offline

I frequently run into this problem lately. Normal times for the first update to really show activity are over an hour. This is what happens when MS won't issue an SP2. I would wait two hours at least before pulling the plug. Also, make sure you're using the latest WSUSo, as there's an addition that makes scanning faster. That's the first thing I would try.

I have been having trouble lately transfering files between one PGP virtual disk and another HD. I tried creating new virtual disk, copy, pasting, but it all ends up the same way. My system stalls and at the least I have exit out the window. More often than not I have to restart the system.

Obviously - I've wiped the OS and installed from scratch two times already. I am not at my computer right now. By the time I get home a complete virus scan should be completed. I am using AVG as opposed to Avast, since this all started happening when Avast stopped a file from transfering.

In a related issue I am having problems downloading Adobe Acrobat Reader X. I was using Mozilla Fire Fox the first time I wiped the system, and it worked fine. However I have refrained from using it for the time being and stuck to Internet Explorer.

Also during both system wipes I used windows firewall as opposed to the normal Comodo (freeware) Firewall.

I have yet to do a defrag of all the drives involved, that will be my next task; depending on the results when I return home.

Can anybody asist?

Thank You.

Hello everyone,

I've been trying to add my photos and music to the Metro apps and if I understand correctly, I need to add the folder locations to the Libraries.

I've got my Music and Photos located on a Windows 2008 R2 server with the Windows Search service running and configured to index those locations.

Initially, I simply added the network location to the library ie: \\SERVER\Shared\Music, and this SORT OF worked, I was only able to see the folders in the photos and only some music showed up with some track info missing.

Then I made the folders available offline and added them again, this time NOTHING shows up.

Has anyone gotten the Metro apps to work with network locations?

Windows 8.1 is not correctly apply the Default Cache Size/Limit Disk Space Used by Offline Files policy.
I have followed this guide.
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Network > Offline Files

I have configured the policy as follows:

Locate the following policies:

Limit disk space used by off line files (DISABLED)
Disabling this policy allow limits higher than the default 10% of disk capacity to be used for Offline file cache.Default cache size (10000)
Enabling this policy and configuring a cache size allows you to set the % of disk size that the cache will use.Prohibit user configuration of Offline files. (DISABLED)
Disabling this will allow users to manually set their own % of disk size that the cache will use.
After setting the GPO I formated my CSC and logged in to see what the new setting was.
The result of this in Windows 8.1 was that an offline files cache of 1.29Gb (0.6%) would be created on my 200GB C: drive.
I tried changing the size to 9500 and 9700 but both are still setting a default cache of less than 1 percent.
I re-applied the GPO on several occasions using gpupdate /force to
no avail.

There seems to be a bug in Windows 8.1 with the processing of this GPO item preventing it from creating a cache.
I checked the registry and the values entered into the GPO are what show in the registry.

I've recently upgraded my computer and windows 7 to 64-bit and I just noticed that I can't search my documents on my network drive.  I've read the various posts about this on the net and the solution is either to live without it or turn on offline files.  I turned on offline files and told windows to rebuild the index and waited for it to complete and it's still not working.  I see in the indexing options control panel applet that "offline files" is in the "included locations" column.  Any ideas?

A:indexing mapped network drive w/ offline files not working

If you go to Control Panel>Indexing options, click on the Advanced button. There should be tabs for Index Settings, File Types and Add UNC Location. Add the path to the mapped network drive. Note: Some versions of Windows 7 don't seem to have this tab, for some reason.

I am having an issue with a Windows 7 SP1 machine and offline files.

Let's say \\Server01\Users\username is the share that is available offline.

When attempting to access documents in the user share, the "Offline Status" is usually listed as "Disconnected" in the Explorer window.  When opening up Sync Center, it also shows that the Offline Files are "Disconnected" in its listed "Status".

While this occurs however, the server is available on the network.  It can be pinged as well as other non-offline shares accessed seamlessly.

The Microsoft-Windows-OfflineFiles operational log file shows that the path to the folder is being connected ever 2 minutes, only to be disconnected about 5 seconds later - not to reconnect for another 2 minutes. See the following events which happen continuously:

Setup: Windows 7 X64 Enterprise, no SP1.
1) Tried the registry change to clear the offline files cache on c:\windows\csc and move it to d:\csc

http://www.mydigitallife.info/how-to-relocate-or-move-offline-files-client-side-caching-location-in-windows-7-or-vista/ . This doesn't work. Windows simply ignores the reg key "CacheLocation" and post-reboot just recreates c:\windows\csc after
I went through the steps to remove it earlier. Syntax used in the reg key for CacheLocation is \??\d:\csc (I tried with and without the folder created manually).
2) Offlines files when instructed to sync a child folder of a parent drive mapping attempts to sync the entire parent folder. This is really annoying because the parent folder has over 1TB in it.
\\servername\parent\child is right clicked, I choose "always available offline" and I see it start to sync. In the progress bar I can literally see it pulling data like xls and pst files off of the parent folder.
What's puzzling is that others seem to have luck in getting #1 to work so it makes me think I'm screwing up the steps but I've check it and tried it twice now.
Any help would be appreciated.

A:Offline Files Cache location change not working and caching entire parent directory

The default location of the Offline Folders cache is %systemroot%\csc. If you need to move this cache to another location
on your computer for some reason, follow these steps:
1. Set the following REG_DWORD registry key to a value of 1:

Doing this ensures that all items in the cache are migrated

2. Run the Windows Easy Transfer wizard. Once the data has been scanned, a Customize link is displayed. Click this link and
make sure that Windows Settings is checked for all items displayed in the list.

3. Once you have collected the data, set the following String registry key to specify the new cache location:

For example, to move the cache to a folder named CSCCache on your D: drive, specify the following value:

4. Now reboot your computer, run the Easy Transfer wizard again and apply the previously gathered files. Then reboot one more
time when prompted by the wizard.

I am implementing windows 7 soon at work and i have a test machine i have been working with. At my business we use the syncing of offline files in this way. Currently with XP all of our users My Documents are stored on the server and mapped to the users my documents on there PC

I have been searching for this in windows 7 and have had no luck. the only thing i have found is they want you to map a network drive and use it that way.

Does anyone know if what i am currently using in XP works in 7.

The process for folder redirection remains pretty much the same as it has been in previous versions of Windows, the only caveat being that, you cannont use the link from the start menu "Documents" or the link within libraries "Documents". You need to use the actual location c:\users\YourUserName\My Documents, right click, properties, location tab, move.

I am trying to get an issue resolved with a pc. This pc is a desktop, windows 2000 sp#4, has a lan 10/100, continous lan broadband always on and has about 256MB RAM available.

I use a program called Look at lan, v250. I use this program so that when I have the operator call me and tell me that there is a problem with the computer, I can tell if it is on the network or not. Lately, this comp has been going on line and off repeatedly. I tried to do a file transfer once with it about 1 MB file and it took about 20-30 mins for it to complete. After about 35 tries and numerous c++ visual library file errors, I finally got the file across. Everything is working as far the IP address, on the same network name. The only thing that was changed is that the HDD was changed from a 4MB to 10GB system since the files they use are taking up the free space.

Any Ideas of what it could be?

The errors is any one is intrested is from the Ultra VNC, most of them are write socket errors and runtime errors.

There is another comp that we have that is also a windows 2000 professional and is does not have the same problems. I noticed this problem when we had an outisde tech to come in and install ca antivirus on the other machines (XP only). This computer will also not connect to a shared file that is on another computer (XP) that is visible to the other computers.

Hi there,

I have recently got a new laptop, and as I wanted to use the network offline files (not onedrive offline) I upgraded it from Windows 10 Home to Pro specifically for that feature.

I have done this upgrade before with no problems.

However, on this laptop, when I go to the Control Panel, select 'Manage Offline Files', and click enable, simply nothing happens; no error message is displayed.

I have tried to enable offline files multiple times (tried restarting), with no luck.

How can I fix this?

Many thanks.

There are dozens of posts here about .Net Framework 3.5 failing to install. Several solutions have been proposed, that work for some people but not all. None work for me.

I won't repeat what others have already posted, but here very briefly is what I've tried:
installing from Control Panel > Programs and Features ("online install")offline install via DISMthird party utilities that provide an interface for DISM, hoping to prevent typing errorscopying the /sources/sxs to the C: drive and trying all the above again.

What I have not done is refreshing, resetting or reinstalling. I've put too much work into setting up Windows 8.

There is one constant in every attempt: the returned error code is 0x800F0922. However, I cannot find an explanation for this error code. Every reference I have found to this error code doesn't explain the error code, but instead provides one of the solutions for installing .net 3.5 which I've already tried.

I am now at a dead end. I cannot install .net 3.5 by any method posted here, and I cannot find an explanation for why I cannot install. I think my best, last course of action is to somehow find out the meaning of 0x800F0922 and hopefully figure out what is going wrong. Can anyone help?

EDIT - Here is an excerpt from my DISM log (with emphasis added):

Encountered the option "featurename" with value "NetFX3"
Encountered an unknown option "featurename" with value "NetFX3"

A:.Net 3.5 Fails Online and Offline

I still don't know what the F0922 error is, or what the error lines in my DISM log mean.

Since I'm running Win8 in a VM anyway, I created a new Win8 VM. After it was finished setting up, one of the first things I did was to install .Net Framework 3.5. That worked just fine. I just wish I knew why this failed the first time. If I don't understand why it failed, I won't know what to do if it happens again. I'm afraid to install Windows 8 on my hard drive without knowing.

I have my Outlook 2000 set up to ask me on startup if I want to connect or work offline.
When I go offline, I hit F9 to synchronize all folders whenever I connect to a LAN or phone line.
Problem: How do I get back to the "connected" mode? I can't access my global address book when I'm offline. I try exiting and re-starting, but it does not prompt me to connect and I'm offline again.
Thanks in advance!

uh, hello people. it's been a while. cheers to you all who've been helping others

anyway, need some advices. the other day I stumbled upon a program called "isiton" by erightsoft (dot com), I was working on my videos from my cellphone that time. well, in short, the website says this program will tell if my computer's network is set up properly. but every single time I turn the program on, it kept on saying "totally disconnected from network" ..I did a little research last night and found a website (portforward dot com) that seems to help a lot. after tinkering with the darned router, I was ready to see if finally I'm really online. turned out that whatever I did was useless. I'm still totally disconnected from network. I even downloaded their port checker program and every single port number I put in was unreachable (of course I changed it first in the port forwarding part of the router before testing it). ..I'm almost ready to give up now...

my question is, if I'm really disconnected from network, how can I reach the internet, how can I browse and even get here?! to make matters worse, 1. I'm not in the US anymore 2. my modem is supposedly a dual function thing (modem router).

any advice? both (the actual) modem and the actual router shares the same brand, TP-LINK. got the modem from the ISP and bought the router myself.

thanks people. have a happy, healthy winter and a merry holiday season. stay warm..

Any idea on how to improve it?

A:Low FPS with online Games, 60 fps offline

It sounds to me like you've got yourself some good old lag

The way to improve it would be to upgrade your internet connection to a faster plan, and possibly acquire a new modem/router if the one you have is not up to the task.

I'm one of those people who turn off their computer regularly

I'm also running Cerberus FTP server.

What I'm looking for a program/application that will display on a web site/bb
that my FTP server is offline. It can be graphical or text, and I can make my own graphics.

I'm struggling with an odd glitch. I'm trying to work on a website and when I log into the host server and click on certain links (i.e. file manager) it suddenly tries to connect to the internet and tells me the page can not be accessed offline. However, we have a dsl connection that is constantly connected, and I can confirm that we are indeed online by accessing websites not saved in the cache files, or downloading mail.

What makes it weirder is that the same thing occurrs in both Internet Explorer and Firefox. When it tries to connect is says the remote server is not responding, presumably because we are already connected. But nothing seems to resolve the issue. I have tried restarting and resetting the modem.

A:'unavailable offline' when online

You may need to make a post in Security--I had a similar problem with an infected computer.

However, first, have you tried clearing your private data? In FF it's Tools-->Clear Private Data, and you can set your preferences to clear your private data at regular intervals if you choose. I don't remember how to do it on a Windows machine, nor do I remember how to clear your private stuff in Internet Explorer (especially the new one, which I've never used.)

You might also clear your temp folder and your other temp downloads folder (I think that's what it's called?) I've avoided using a windows machine for a while, and it's amazing how quickly you forget stuff, but I think they are called something like that. Someone else can surely clarify if you need it.
