Skype for Win 8 works terribly, Skype for desktop is worse

Q: Skype for Win 8 works terribly, Skype for desktop is worse

I've experienced some problems and discomfort with skype for win8:
- not able to show screen,
- terrible design,
- very slow response (i.e. when I click RMB, the menu shows up in several seconds, and I expect to see it immideately),
- doesn't understand links to skype chat like skype:?chat&blob=blahblahblah, when I click it nothing happens.

I've also tried skype for desktop, it was even worse:
- when I changed online status to invisible (i've also tried with N/A), skype stopped to receive and send messages,
- when this or another error occurs, I try to kill skype process via task manager, TM then firstly says that skype is not responding (so i am trying to kill process), after that TM stops responding as well.
So when i've tried skype for desktop i had to reboot my laptop about 5 times in a day.

Now I've installed skype from Store back, but I still need to go to skype chat.

Could anyone please help me either make skype 5.x/6.x work on win8, or enter the chat which i need?

Here's my system: http://i.imgur.com/Fu65f57.png

Thanks in advance!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

You might see if creating a new shortcut for it directly from the .exe file of Skype may work instead.

Hope this helps,

I have always used Skype for Desktop and only recently found that there is a Skype Modern App on my system.
From what I have read it would seem the best plan would be to ditch the App and just continue with the desktop version.
Have there been any recent changes that would make the the Modern App a better solution than the Desktop version?

A:Skype for Desktop vs Skype Modern App

They have updated it recently so it doesn't continue to ring even when you have answered the desktop version which is why I uninstalled it in the first place. This means in theory you could install both and answer whichever you felt like at the time.

I prefer the look of the desktop version personally so I never re-installed the Modern App version.

A:Do I need both Skype app and Skype for desktop?

Unless you are on an RT tablet I would just use the desktop version, from the reviews the app is not very good, perhaps after some future updates it will be better.

Hi there,

I have had this error for about 1 week after I installed/uninstalled several VPN services.
I have "internet access"  on both Local Area Connection and WIFI but, none of my browsers are
displaying a webpage.  Skype works, TOR works (I am using TOR's default 127.0.0.1:9050 proxy
settings to get online with Chrome).  On Chromes start page it even shows my name as logged into
GMAIL! (before I switched to the TOR proxy settings.)

Here is what I have tried

Flushing the DNS
release/renew ip
reset winsock
disabled/re-enabled both adapters
Unistalled/reinstalled both network adapters
shutoff the firewall
booted into safemode
removed my antivirus

Ran a few scripts

lspfix
winsock repair
windows repair (all-in-one) tweaknow
mini toolbox

Run MBAM scan
and MSE scan

Reset IE to default.
Cleared proxy setings.
Re-installed the adapter client, service and protocols,

This is driving me nuts! Its got to be something easy that I am missing!

Any help would be appreciated!

MINITOOLBOX did these modifications:  http://pastebin.com/7haze1gv

Dear

I noticed that skype has send to all skype contacts a certain link, to one contact even multiply links.

this all happens on the same day: 17th december from 14:30 -14:39.

I haven't seen any spam send anymore after that.

Skype support told me to reset my password, I did, and to download safety scanner from microsoft. they proviced me with the link.

when I try to open the link, the browser cannot load the page, it is stuck in a loop:  sometimes I see a page, but just for a second or even less, then mostly white page, and browser keeps trying to load the page. and in chrome : a  little shield symbol on the right side of the address bar says that it's trying to load scripts from unauthenticated sources. this message dissappears very quickly.

I have skype installed on two laptops, and on my smartphone (iphone).

The problem I told about, is on one laptop that has no antivirus. I did not yet checked the other laptop, if the microsoft page opens or not. but I do have bitdefender internet security (paid) installed on the second laptop.

I want to be sure the laptop that has the problem, is virusfree.

A:spam send in skype account to all skype contacts - cannot load page safety scan

I downloaded the safety scanner from microsoft from my other laptop without any issue.

copied it to a usb, put it on the problem laptop, a full scan and nothing found.

I realize I did had a antivirus paid version (kaspersky internet securuity) on the laptop, as I first said that it had no antivirus.

I only disabled it because it had problems running.

Now I enabled it, updated it and run a full scan. nothing found.

I don't know if skype is the cause and not a virus?  the skype workers told me that the cause could be anything (email, virus on computer).

I mostly use skype on iphone, and here I'm confused with what the skype workers said: one said that iphone can not be infected, so no need to check the iphone.
an other said: you can download an app from app store to scan for viruses, because it is possible that the virus is on the iphone.

This is really not clear anymore.

I'm having a few issues with my internet. I've been to a lan party yesterday with my computer and everything went fine. Came back home though it wouldn't work.
It didn't have any problems because it was transported safely and no hardware was damaged.

Skype works properly , though things like League of Legends ( an online game) , Internet explorer Opera etc don't work.

I did a ipconfig /all in the command prompt and got this.

Node Type: Hybrid
IP Routing Enabled: No
WINS Proxy Enabled: No

Excuse me if I didn't post here properly but this is all I got. I'm posting from the other computer so it's not a provider problem.

A:Skype works but Browsers don't.

Did you need to reconfigure a proxy server at the LAN party? Did you have to make any network changes? If not, I'd start scanning for malware, and checking to see if your hosts file has been tampered with. You could also try releasing your IP and renewing it as well.

Hello all

I'm using my mobile phone (Sony Ericsson G502) as a modem. I use a pre-paid card.
When I connect to the Internet (using dial-up or something like that, I'm not sure it's 100% dial-up) it connects and I will obtain an IP.
It will start to receive packets, but very slowly and totally randomly. Sometimes 100 bytes per hour, sometimes even less, sometimes more. I can't browse or use this Internet connection in any way.

But when I start Skype, it starts to receive packets very fast and Skype works! I can chat and talk and everything!

So, can someone help me (or at least give me some information) - how does Skype connects to the Internet bypassing the operators redirection (lets say wap.operator.com/page/page.html). Because every time I want to connect somewhere it redirects to that page, but Skype bypasses it!

Thanks, I hope you can understand my bad explanation and English

Feel free to ask more questions!

Thanks again!

Hello,
Two days ago my computer gave me a blue screen of death (not the first time). Ever since that restart my internet says I'm connected but nothing can access the internet (Except for skype), the fingerprint sensor also does not work anymore. I thought it may be a hardware issue but system scans say everything is fine and with skype working it leads be to believe that it's not a hardware issue. I looked through all the forums and google results but none of the fixes seem to fix my problem.
I have reset the winsock, tried a public DNS, turned use a proxy on in internet options, I have the same problem when I take my laptop into work and connect wired or wireless to that network as well (fixed IP or dynamic) so it's not the ISP, I cannot ping anything neither google.com nor localhost, Windows troubleshoot solution does not find any errors, and the error reporting or windows update cannot connect to the internet. Torrents, Browsers(Firefox,IE(both 64bit and 32bit),Chrome), Mail, Windows, Microsoft Security Essentials cannot connect either; only skype seems to work.
I use MSE so I don't have any other antivirus or malware program running. I was watching a replay of a game off the internet and also had started an update of Adobe CS5 (the blue screen came about 15min into the game) so I wasn't sure if Adobe finished. Since that was the only thing I had newly installed or changed before having the problem, I have uninstalled the entire Adobe CS5 suite and still no... Read more

A:No internet connection but Skype works

If Skype works, then you do have Internet connection. But you may have a problem with DNS.

Start a command prompt. Then type:

ping 128.163.1.6

Does that work?

If yes, then type:

ping "www.cnet.com" (without the quotes)

If yes to the first, but not to the second, let me know.

Hi

Im having trouble connecting to the internet, even though my Skype works 100% fine. It was working fine for the past week or 2 up until I got a error from my browser every time I try to use Firefox or IE.

I connect to a modem via a wireless card. I first thought it could be ports conflicting because iI could not run apache servers, I could sort out this prob because I know Skype uses an alternative port 80 which conflicts with programs lik WAMP or XAMPP.

What could be the rpobelme why my computer cannot connect to the internet, there is another computer which connects the same way undergoing the same problem.

Attached is screenshot of my pc's IP configuration if it should help.

Hi, my internet says that everything is connected and skype and msn does work but my browsers are not connecting. I have read forums about the same topic here and have applied all of the proposed solutions but it did not work for me..... Please help.... I`m running Windows 7

A:SKYPE, MSN Works but Browsers Dont work....

would you post an ipconfig /all- see below
also do a tcp/ip reset
What firewall / security suite or anti-virus do you currently have on the PC - or you have ever had on the PC in the past - any trial ware - like Norton, Mcafee , AVG , Webroot etc

------------------------------------------------------------------------
ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

This should also work for windows 8
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results into notepad and then automatically open the notepad and display on your screen.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results into a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will now be... Read more

Hi everyone,

I keep getting a network error. I'm not sure if it has to do with Kaspersky application launch, I keep receiving a pop that asks it send a failure report. I will take a screenshot when I can next. I can never send the failure report.

I can't use any of my browsers when I get the network error but I can skype? But when I am skyping, it's a computer within my house? I haven't tried skyping outside of my house as a test yet.

Is there a thread somewhere with a list of things I could do to speed up my computer and programs I could if it could be a virus or spyware? I tried to search and look around for about 30 mins now. edit I think I found it!

Another edit awhile back I got an email from comcast. I tried to fix it and it seems like I did because I haven't gotten an email from them again.

Note: Previously posted in Network issues, and now posted here after discovering malware.

Hello folks,

I have searched and searched and have found the above problem many times but not with the same symptoms as mine.

I have been trying to fix it and may have made things worse.

This is my brother-in-laws computer. He had it at home and I think the browser was hijacked, as he installed some strange toolbar (starwon or something) and I searched it, it was malware I think, at that time he got a new computer so we just ignored it really.
Then he moved said computer to work, skype worked fine as did email through outlook, so although I had promised to try to get web working, I hadn't managed it. I had installed google chrome, but that didn't work either.

At this point, brother-in-law gets new version of office to have word 2007, and gets me to install it, in doing so, it came up with an error about a file not found on the cd (all originals with serials), I search the error, seems common, answer is to uninstall old version first, rather than attempt to update.

Of course I didn't realise that this new version doesn't have outlook on it, and so he loses all his files and now outlook express can't get his emails. It can't find the incoming server, or outgoing.

So that's were I am now. My mac works fine in his office, we are both plugged directly into wall. I can't seem to ping anything from his computer, but I'm not a tech. Just a pretendy tech.

Hi, new user but long time broswer of the site here, but i've got a problem I can't find covered fully before so I'm a bit stuck.

Since Monday i've had problems with my net connection at home, Skype is working; at least just for IM, i haven't tried phone / web cam functions, but nothing else will, Firefox / IE can't load any pages, Live Messenger won't sign in, etc etc. I've had a few phone calls with my ISP who ended up running a line test and they insist that everything there end is fine.

I'm using Win 7 64.

I've found this thread previously on what sounds similar, but doesn't give a final way of solving the problem:

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/966784-internet-connected-skype-works-but.html

I've done what etaf is asking for on that thread, so i'll post the results below. Also my control panel settings like he askes seems normal. I logged in as safe mode with networking, but still could not load web pages.

I've tried a few other things that I only really half understand like DNS settings etc, but pretty much these were all set to auto before and after the problem so nothing has changed.

Open to trying any suggestions, but I'm currently at work so can't try them out right away, and if I have no internet at home I might be slow getting back with any more details requested. Thanks in advance for any help - Barry.

I tested it out as it is right now and when I call my dad's phone, says "Unknown caller."

I have an internal mic along with my Dell Vostro 1500 (with a Windows 7 OS), and it's been working perfectly with Skype until a month ago. However I can still use Audacity perfectly, so I really don't understand why it's not working for Skype

Also, I've tried my mic for yahoo and other voice call programs, but still unsuccessful. Thus it's not a problem for Skype only, but has something to do with either my hardware or some modification to my mic settings. Thing is, I've also checked my settings and they're still the same as the time when I could still do voice calls.

Help, please?

A:Internal Mic not working with Skype/Fbchat, works in Audacity

Is it set as your input device in Skype?

Is it set as the default input in Windows?

The internet randomly stops working for browsers (IE, Chrome) but Skype always works. The outages will last for about 5 minutes or so. During these outages, the Store section of Steam also does not display anything and AVG cannot update.

So in other words, everything but Skype will periodically refuse to connect to the internet for a short while then just as randomly start working again.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Last night my Internet suddenly crashed, and now both Internet Explorer and Firefox are unable to connect to the Internet although Skype strangely works perfectly. This makes me think it is a DNS issue but I don't know how to proceed. I have tried:

Restarting
Resetting winsock, IPv4, IPv6
dnsflush
Changing proxy settings (currently there is no proxy)
Using different connections (I am on a wired connection, although two different wireless connections get the same results)
System restore. When I first tried system restore, I chose the nearest point to restore to and was met with "The specific object was not found (0x80042308)." Clicking run system restore then resulted in "Catastrophic failure (0x8000FFFF)."
IPv4 and IPv6 are both set to automatically aquire DNS and IP
Removed Bonjour just to be safe
Took down all firewalls
Ran a full virus scan

I can ping my IP, default gateway, and DNS servers along with any other IP but I cannot ping URLs. Attempting to connect to a URL results in "Server not found" and connecting directly to an IP results in a connection time out.

I'll try to upload what I believe to be the relevant bits of my ipconfig. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Questions
Is it LAN only or does the same happen on Wifi (can test on Hamzas machine when problem reoccurs)?
We need to test the graphics fix on a PC that shows the problem

A:Computer slows down, can ping can't browse, Skype works,

Do all pc's have the same issue or only a few?
If you boot pc you can't browse webpages, or does problem appear a few minutes later?

Try: ping telegraaf.nl
Use a site you have never used since last boot! Works?

Are you using a proxyserver?
Skype keeps working all the time?

Hi, I hope this is in the correct section. I have Windows Vista. Im having a problem with connecting to any online server. I can't connect to MSN, skype, poker full tilt and pkr. Literally everything. I have turned off my Windows Firewall, don't think I have any other firewall and also have them all under exceptions anyway. The thing is my internet connection is broadband and I can surf the web online on internet browser with no problems. Also my dad has the same laptop and we use the same internet and his works fine so it must be something I have done. This has been going on for a long time and I can't sort it. Its really annoying me. If anyone could sort this I would be very grateful. Thank you!

So simply put, I cannot use skype for desktop. The app version that is preinstalled, I can't use because it drives me insane so uninstalled it, however, it IS STILL blocking skype for desktop from working. I've attached a screeenshot to show you what I mean.

Is there a way to get rid of the app version of skype since clearly uninstalling it did nothing.

Just to provide a bit more info, no, I am NOT already signed in on my pc.

EDIT: More info, once it "breaks" it starts a skype process which I cannot kill until reboot.

A:W8 app blocks SKYPE FOR DESKTOP

Sign in to Skype on any other computer or smartphone, open chat with anybody and send:

Code:
/remotelogout

That should log you out from all sessions except for the current one.

I have been using Skype paid calls for business usage and have huge problems with the Other side not hearing me well or at all. It used to work OK but now I have to restart hub or reconnect or just wait . This is for calls to International. If I call skype to skype it is OK most of time. My provider BT has checked all hub settings and network seems fine. I am about to give up on skype to non skype as a business option and the fact I am spending good money and cant get instant support really doesnt help. I am out of ideas

For the past week my desktop icons (only those that are viewed from the desktop and not from within Explorer) are showing up with a Skype logo over top of the correct icon associated with the file (pdf, mp3, txt, and folders) but not exe files, shortcuts,
Recycle Bin, Computer, or Network.  Oddly enough I just realized that some of the icons for folders on the desktop are correct and some are with the Skype icon and 2 mp4 files are not overwritten...weird!

Of course, I've uninstalled Skype, replaced the shell32.dll with the one from the Windows 7 CD, deleted the IconCache.db file after editing the registry to increase the max icon cache to 2048. I've run Norton AV and MalwareBytes scans with nothing found
(rebooting after each previous step, btw).  I've wasted several days on this to no avail...can anyone help me?! TIA!!

So I have a problem with a fake update pop-up. It's the last thing that's left from something else, I do not recall exactly what it was, but Mobogenie does sound familiar. I wanted to download a program that allowed me to open a file (I thought it was some sort of text file I needed for a thesis in school, but it turned out to be a frikkin picture, so I got nothing for my troubles!), and apart for letting me open the file, it installed a bunch of other crap. It messed with my Chrome, and made their own search engine my primary. I removed all of it (using what little skill I have: basic search, CCcleaner and Norton Antivirus scan, and after that everything seemed fine.

However, I have these pesky pop-ups that tells me to download the latest updates for various programs, and I can't seem to find where this program is hiding?!

It pops up every now and then (I use Skype quite a lot, and it seems to pop up after I quit the program. Not always though.), and it's a greyish pop-up in the right-hand corner of my desktop. It says that there are new updates available, and it's clickable. I did click it once to see where it took me, and I landed on a download page for a bunch of crap. So no, it doesn't even send me to a fake Adobe/Skype page. I can click the "x", which I have been doing for a while now. I thought I would be able to find the .exe, but so far I've come up empty handed.I am on Windows 7 Ultimate, and this pop-up does NOT appear whilst browsing, it ... Read more

I just realized that this fragment from Skype's dropdown for Tools is now stuck firmly on my desktop, and it overrides everything - or perhaps I mean it stays on top of everything I open.
Does anyone have any understanding of this, please ? - and can you advise me how to get it off the desktop ?

Followed soon after by: "[Program] has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.

So far, I have found that each of the following all experience the same when I try to
