Lenovo ThinkPad X220 Hotkey Update for Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

Q: Lenovo ThinkPad X220 Hotkey Update for Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

Spoiler (Highlight to read)IMPORTANT!!IMPORTANT!!Friends from Lenovo,Yesterday I did the update to the new version of Windows 10, called Windows 10 Fall Creators Update or Windows 10, version 1709, and after the update was done I find out that the hotkey driver, that controls the Fn commands on the keyboard of my Lenovo ThinkPad X220, doesn`t work correctly with this new version of Windows 10. Therefore, I would like to know what can I do to fix this issue, so the hotkey commands work properly again in my notebook, or if it is going to be an update of this file (8jvu43ww.exe) that I could install in my notebook to fix this issue. Could you please tell me what can I do to make the Fn commands work properly with the new update of Windows 10 (Windows 10 Fall Creators Update) or if it is going to be an update of the hotkeys that is compatible with the new version of Windows 10?I look forward to hear your comments, and I hope you already have an idea, an answer to solve this issue. Yours truly,Cristián Palau

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi Voljka,For company or production environment, Windows Insider Preview / Release Preview builds is not recommended, as the drivers may not be ready for all types of hardware.  I would suggest you revert back to Windows 10 RS3 (15063), and wait until it is ready and show up in the Windows Update.

Hi Guys, Looking to consolidate the list of issues I have with my TP since updating to Win10 Fall Creators Update (1709) update. And I am looking for help in resolving the outstanding issues. I have gone through the common resolution methods on this official Lenovo site as well as from this collection of tips. Outstanding issues below. 1. Keyboard AUTO backlight setting is not working, light doesn't come on when its dark on its own.2. Auto screen brightness control is not working3. Screen rotation button is still greyed out in the sidebar as well as settings4. OLED colour profile settings had stopped working and disappeared. (But this fix worked)5. Intel SGX drivers were busted (finally updated on their own via Win10) Now for 1, 2 and 3, I think this is an integrated sensors issue and I have tried uninstalling the Intel Sensor Solution device drivers from Device Manager and then updated the drives through Lenovo Companion. Nothing changed.Windows Update later also installed an update called Intel Integrated Sensor Solution but these issues have not gone away. On a positive note, this Win10 update and the related updates to Synaptics touchpad drivers resolved the issue of the cooling fan being constantly being on (this forum attributed the issue to bad synaptics drivers). Anyone else facing the same issue related to sensors on this machine? As of 5 minutes ago, there were no new updates on LenovoCompanion or on Win10. Thanks

Windows 10 Fall Creators Update phased rollout approach - Windows Experience Blog

You better wait

The company recommends users to wait for the Fall Creators Update to be offered via Windows Update, though there?s no estimate as to how much this wait could last as it all depends on the number of bugs and issues that the company finds in the new OS version.Click to expand...

You might not have been offered the upgrade, because of the software/hardware you have. Like AMD causing black screen during boot.

As with the Creators Update, the key to our phased approach is actively listening to all available feedback mechanisms and making the appropriate product updates during the rollout. This allows us to provide a high-quality experience for the broadest set of users at an accelerated rate, while also continually increasing the quality and security of Windows 10. This was our approach with the Creators Update released in April and user feedback on this approach was very positive.

For the best experience, we recommend you wait until Windows 10 is automatically offered to your device. You don?t have to do anything to get the update; it will roll out automatically to you through Windows Update if you?ve chosen to have updates installed automatically on your device. Once the download is complete and the update is ready to install, we?ll check with you, so you can pick the right time to finish the installation and reboot. We do this so we can ensure the update does not disrupt you, and we use active hours to help suggest a good time.

If you don?t want to wait for the update to roll out to you, you can manually check for updates on your personal PC using the steps below. This will only work if your device is eligible to get the Fall Creators Update as part of the initial roll out phase. Alternatively, you can manually get the update today via the Software Download Site. This option is only recommended for advanced users on devices running a licensed version of Windows 10. If ... I would like to comment on the Fall Creator's Edition Update of Windows 10!  This has to be one of the biggest disasters that Microsoft has ever accomplished.  As one can see from the various problems encountered after the install this update was not well designed, was not thoroughly quality controlled and now has the support staff scrambling to figure out how to answer all of the issues that it caused.  Here is my list of issues after the update:  Mail and Calendar programs missing from Start Menu, Control Panel Apps shows them to be installed but I cannot add to start menu and cannot start either program.  Several other Apps also missing from Start Menu including Amazon, Adobe Reader and most other third party Apps but also several more Microsoft Apps or Windows Programs.  Files missing:  Somehow during the install Microsoft decides to remove the pointers from the Pictures and Documents folders so that it appears all previous files in these locations are lost.  By navigating thru Users...Documents I was able to retrieve all of the files but how many novice or new users are going to know how to do this type of trouble shooting?  This is a bonafide nightmare for Microsoft and takes me one step closer to trading in all of Dell computers for Macs!  It cannot possibly be worse than two days of troubleshooting and researching how to get back to the same functionality I had before installing the latest Windows 10 Update!  ... Windows 10 Fall Creators Update Reaches RTM

Microsoft has completed development of the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, with the official release to take place as planned on October 17.

The company today shipped Windows 10 build 16299.15 to insiders in the Fast ring, and according to reports, this is the RTM build of the Fall Creators Update that everyone will get later this month.

The only difference is that Microsoft will continue to service (to improve) this particular build with more cumulative updates, and this means that insiders will be provided with several patches in the coming days until October 17.

Microsoft has promised to confirm when the RTM build is compiled, so an announcement in this regard is expected anytime soon, especially because the company is also likely to start pushing smaller patches to devices enrolled in the Insider program in the next few days.

No word on the mobile release just yet
For the time being, no stand-alone ISOs are available for insiders, but once the very same build is released to the Slow ring, such media should also be released for those who want to perform a clean install. Additionally, this build should also make it to the Release Preview ring in the coming weeks.

Of course, whoever wants to clean-install build 16299.15 can build their own ISO, though this requires additional steps. Learn here how to build your own Windows 10 ISO.

Now that Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is close to getting the final go-ahead, insiders in... Read more

Found the following bugs in v1709.

1) The Windows Push Notification System Service now defaults to 'automatic' instead of 'manual'. If you set the startup to 'manual' and reboot, any newly created accounts will have a non-functional Start Menu.

2) Software Restriction Policy now extends BAT file restriction to local group policy ( gpedit.msc ) 's logon/logoff script settings. That means you cannot no longer use a bat file for logon/logoff scripts if SRP is active. You can always remove the BAT extension from being covered by SRP, but that would decrease security.

3) Software Restricion Policy's Enforcement section: if you specify SRP to cover 'all software files'; meaning it covers DLL files as well as EXE, then MS Edge will crash. (this bug actually started in v1703, but is still not fixed)

Windows 10 Fall Creators Update Bug Blocks the Install on Some PCs

The Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is now being released in stages to users across the world, so while some people might receive it faster than others, there?s a bunch of unlucky Microsoft customers who can?t install the update because of a critical bug.

Some users are complaining that installing the Fall Creators Update fails unexpectedly, and the only common thing in all reports is a hardware mix of motherboards using Intel?s X299 chipsets and NVMe SSD drives.

Clean install solves the problems
This means that quite a large number of systems could be impacted, as the issue can affect motherboards manufactured by Asus, MSI, and Gigabyte. It?s not yet known how widespread the problem currently is, but Microsoft says it?s investigating and return with a fix shortly.

?At around 22% completion, my PC rebooted and suddenly displayed my normal boot screen with a white text saying ?BlInitialization failed 0xc00000bb?, and I have absolutely no idea what this is. I tried resetting my SSD (Kingston 128GB) but this issue is so bad that it won't even let me do that,? one Microsoft user who turned to the Community forums to report the issue explained.

?At first my SSD was locked, then I unlocked it using commands in CMD but it all of the sudden disappeared and windows has no idea that it even exists. I tried resetting everything and all Windows tells me is "We ran into an error." ... Read more

A:Windows 10 Fall Creators Update Bug Blocks the Install on Some PCs

On a Lenovo w/NVMe, Intel IO and an immaculate pre-Fall CU system, I could not understand why the "upgrade" to Fall CU was so issue-laden: failures, duplicate downloads--ultimately it took though. A relatively decrepit machine w/SSD breezed right thru it. Noticed afterward, I had an extra recovery partition but since there were no outward problems, just let it go. Yesterday, Start menu and most taskbar items became unresponsive. So, I did a repair-install earlier today: the disk is back to the normal EFI/C/Recovery and everything works. For now.

Thanks for this info, not fun trying to figure it out.

The crusty SMBv1 file-sharing protocol, abused by a NSA exploit last month that spread WannaCry, will be removed from Windows 10 starting with the upcoming Redstone 3 update.

?We can confirm that SMBv1 is being removed for Redstone 3,? a Microsoft representative told Threatpost.

Redstone 3, a code-name for the Fall Creators Update, will begin the phasing out of SMBv1, a plan that reportedly has been in the works for years and is not a reaction to the EternalBlue exploit, nor WannaCry. It is due in September.

SMBv1, short for the Server Message Block protocol, provides shared access to Windows file and print services on a local network. Attackers believed to have ties to North Korea used the EternalBlue exploit, leaked in April by the ShadowBrokers, to spread the ransomware worldwide on May 12. Hospitals in the U.K., giant telecommunications providers across Europe, and many businesses in Russia and across Asia fell victim to WannaCry, which eventually infected unpatched Windows servers running SMBv1 in more than 150 countries.
Microsoft had patched the SMBv1 vulnerability in question in March in MS17-010, one month before the ShadowBrokers? leak, and urged admins worldwide to install the patch immediately. The WannaCry outbreak, however, demonstrated that many organizations did not heed those warnings; the ransomware, generally derided for its shoddy coding, still managed to infect... Read more

Earlier this week we began a targeted rollout of the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update and I shared with you how to get it. Today, I?d like to share more details on how we will roll out this feature update to Windows 10 devices, including PCs, phones and IoT devices.
Our goal is to deliver feature updates to you as quickly as possible, while providing you with the best possible update experience.
Phased Rollout Approach
The Fall Creators Update begins rolling out to newer devices tested by us and our device partners. By starting with machines which we believe will have the best update experience, we are able to get focused feedback on application compatibility and how Windows works with the rich ecosystem of available peripherals like Bluetooth devices or cameras. Additionally, we closely monitor feedback from fans and early adopters, through programs like Windows Insiders and Windows Insider for Business, in addition to feedback from our OEM device partners, and customers like you! This helps us determine when to accelerate the release to additional devices. We repeat this process until all compatible devices running Windows 10 worldwide are offered the Fall Creators Update.

We believe this approach provides the highest quality update experience for all our customers.

With this feature update we?ve increased the number of Windows 10 devices we?ve tested in advance with our OEM device and ISV app partners. You can view some of these devices here, which includ... Read more

Hello Folks,
I have a XPS 13 9360, 16 GB with an upgrade Samsung 960 Evo NVMe 1TB drive. I'm running Windows 10 Pro Build 1703, and the system runs nicely. However, yesterday Windows Update made me upgrade to 1709. The upgrade process ran smoothly, but afterwards I had the following problems:

When I tried to save a Hyper-V VM, my system sometimes crashes with a blue screen
When shutting down windows, the system gets stuck on the "Shutting down..." screen and can only be switched off by long-pressing the power-button. After that, the system boots into maintenance mode, when rebooting again it boots normally.

I forced a downgrade to 1703 and the problems disappeared again. Now I have disabled upgrades and am trying to find out how to fix this.
Has anyone run into problems with the 1709 update? Any suggenstions?

I'm not sure if this is the right section for this topic, but I want to know if I'm the only one with this problem. It's really annoying and I'm wondering if there went something wrong while installing the update, or if this is on purpose.

It's nothing new that Windows 10 comes with pre-installed apps, for example Candy Crush Saga and Facebook, at least for some people. In the past it wasn't a problem for me, because I could just uninstall them and move on. It was annoying, but this was solved within a few minutes.

But since I installed the Fall Creators Update, I can't get rid of these apps. I removed them at least 4 times now, but they're back after a few hours because they're installed silently in the background, or they're back after I restart my computer - Candy Crush Soda Saga, Facebook, March of Empires, Minecraft and other games.

Sometimes they're not even really installed and they're just placeholders that get installed once you click them. But it's still annoying to remove them again and again.

Changes in the registry, for example to change "SilentlyInstalledAppsEnabled" to 0, didn't change anything. Microsoft should really stop this sponsored apps nonsense completely. It's not like they need the extra money they get from this.

Thanks for reading, have a nice day!

Windows 10 Still Offered as Free Upgrade After Fall Creators Update Launch

Back in 2015 when Microsoft officially launched Windows 10, the company offered it completely free of charge if the upgrade from genuine Windows 7 or 8.1 was performed within the first 12 months after the release.

But even though the promo came to an end in July 2016, Windows 10 was still available free of charge with a trick that Microsoft didn?t seem to be too very keen on blocking, and by the looks of things, the same trick continues to be available today.

Basically, Microsoft allows customers who use assistive technologies to upgrade to Windows 10 at no cost, and all they have to do is to ?claim? they use an accessibility feature in the operating system. There?s no verification taking place and the upgrade can be performed by pretty much anyone presuming they run a genuine copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.
This doesn?t mean that Windows 10 is free of charge. No, because whoever wants to use this ?loophole? to upgrade to Windows 10 still needs a genuine license for their Windows operating system. But with product keys for Windows 7 and 8.1 still up for grabs these days if you know where to look, moving to Windows 10 is less expensive than it might seem at first glance.

No word on blocking the loophole
So does Microsoft plan to block this free upgrade method? Good question, and although an official answer isn?t available, the company says on the upgrade page that the offer will ... Read more

Everything was perfect before Fall Creators. Then within a day I got blue screen PFN_LIST_CORRUPT . Following this, bluetooth mouse was no longer paired and would not pair. Tried to roll back to previous restore point, but it failed.
So next, I did a factory reset. Updated everything, etc. Bluetooth still did not work. Called Dell support and finally got it to work. Took five minutes of waiting for mouse to be recognized, rather that 5-10 seconds as is usual.
Shortly after this, got another blue screen. Page Fault in Non-Paged Area
A few hours later, got another third blue screen. Different name, did not have time to save it before it went away.
What the <profane> is going on here? How do I make things work the way they are supposed to? The Dell diagnostics show no problems (of course). For the blue screen incidents, Dell app suggests removing software which caused problems and updating drivers. Neither of these work. (It is not possible to do a factory reset without getting Fall Creators Update.)
Please help!

Today, at Build 2017, we announced the next wave of Windows 10 innovations built to empower the creator in all of us ? the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. Available later this year, the Fall Creators Update delivers new experiences for more than 500 million Windows 10 devices: A new design system for the next wave of creativity across devices; experiences that move with you across Windows, iOS, and Android; iTunes, Spotify, SAP Digital Boardroom are coming to the Windows Store; new tools that make Windows home for all developers; and the world?s first Windows Mixed Reality motion controllers ? no markers required.

The spirit of creativity lives in each of us. So often our lives are changed by creating something out of nothing, from a big idea, a dream, or just a simple thought.

Like the incredible developers here at Build, I experienced my own personal creativity in software development. I remember what it was like to wait as my code compiled, then seeing it come to life on the screen for the first time. There is an amazing feeling of creativity that comes from software development. I love seeing that spark of creativity in our Windows developer community.

The Windows 10 Creators Update began rolling out last month to more than 500 million Windows 10 devices around the world. It?s exciting to see more than 300 million people using Windows 10 every day for more than 3.5 hours a day on average. With all of this engagement, we?re most proud that Windows 10 c... Read more

My issues started when I updated to the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. Even though Dell states that my Dell Inspiron 3541 is fully compatible with Windows 10 Fall Creators Update and IT IS NOT! This update slowed my system down to a crawl! Mouse jumps and skips across the screen when used and ALL programs are very very slow to open and use. And start up is a full 10 MINUTE deal now. I have updated windows and all dell drivers as needed at dell website.
The Fall Creators Update also caused my Onedrive to ask me each time I booted which files I wanted to sync. Excel and Word would not open some files at all. I uninstalled my paid subscription Office 365 and reinstalled, not solving the problem.
I reverted back to my previous Windows 10 version and still had all of the same problems. I did get Office to open all my Onedrive files work by uninstalling and reinstalling Office again. But the Laptop is still very very slow and frustrating.
i have not found anything on the web that relates to this.
I have checked system settings, devices and device settings, event logs, and monitored cpu, memory, and drive usage without finding a culprit.   I have optimized the laptop and run all Dell test.
I am currently doing a clean install of Windows, deleting all else on the laptop, in hopes it solves my issue. If not I have the original factory back up and will install it and go from there.Has anyone else had this issue?
Thanks ahead of time for any help you can provide,  Roy

I updated my OptiPlex 7050 to the Fall Creators Update 1709 and my HDMI port has stopped working.  I'm running a dual monitor system, one monitor is using the display port and the other is using HDMI port.  After the update the port just stopped functioning.
Here's what I've tried:

I've tried three different monitors
Tried three different hdmi cables, plus one HDMI to display port
Flashed the BIOS
Installed the latest display drivers from Dell

As soon as I roll back the update, everything is fine.  To stop Windows to keep trying to update, I've set the branch readiness level to "Current Branch for Business" and deferred it for 365 days.
Is anyone else having this problem?
I'm in No hurry to install this update!
