Solved: Random horizontal line that can't select or delete

Q: Solved: Random horizontal line that can't select or delete

I have a document that has a random horizontal line at the bottom of one page (above the footer). There is no shading or borders in the document. I cannot select the line (it appears to be in a text box, but I can't select the text box either). I need to remove the line. It is only one one page. This is in Word on a Windows XP operating system.

Preferred Solution: Solved: Random horizontal line that can't select or delete

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Solved: Random horizontal line that can't select or delete

If you can't select the line why not select everything else on the page and cut and paste that to a new replacement page and then delete the old page with just the line left on it.

Hello

I have a need to find a text of X in a document go to end of line select whole line and delete line and then find next X in document. With 3500 X Id like to loop till end of document. In 2010 my (pc at home) the find X part of a recorded Macro does not show up. In 2007 it shows up so I can see how it works at office. I just need to know how to loop, the above of instruction "find X, select whole line, delete, find next X" and loop this.

Eg

YYYY 1
AHKJUSKL XX
AGSJUJ ()*(IO XX
ASJ
L:JOPO

needs to look like

YYYY 1
ASJ
L:JOPO

using XX as the reference of which line to delete.

Each and every time I boot-up my computer, I am prompted to select between "Windows XP Home Edition" and "(Backup Line) Windows XP Home Edition". Everything works fine with either selection. Is there a way I can bypass or select "Windows XP Home Edition" by default?

A:Solved: Help - Prompted to Select Backup Line for Windows XP every startup

You're going to have to edit your boot.ini file located in C:\
Double-click on this file to open it in Notepad. Is the (Backup Line) line listed?
If so, delete this line. Your boot.ini file should now look something like this, especially the [operating systems] section:

[boot loader]
timeout=15
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

Double-check what you have done before saving the changes.

I am getting a horizontal line all the way across my LCD screen. It is very thin and annoying, and is about in the middle.
It appears from the time I start my computer up, until I turn if off and will not go away.. This line is NOT scratch in the screen, it is graphical.
I tried reinstalling Windows XP, but this did not work. XP has been on my Thinkpad A21m 2628-F1U for a very long time and this is the first time this has ever happened. Also, I tried installing some new video drivers from IBM's website and that didn't work either.

Any suggestions? Is it hardware or software related? Thank you.

Hi,
I recently purchased a ViewSonic VA905 19" monitor and within a month of having it, there is a 1 pixel horizontal line running through the middle of the screen. It is only 3 months old and it runs through a surge protector as well as the ups. The line only seems to come up after about 20 mins but last night it was on when I booted up and then it went away then came back again. Begining to frustrate me...... Does anyone know what causes this and if I can fix or if the screen is busted. I have tried contacting viewsonic themselves and they have not replied. I am also running a Asustek EN6600LE-Silencer-TD-256, NVIDIA GForce -256MB,PCI Express graphics card but have not tampered with any of the overclocking settings as I dont know much about it. Any help please.......

A:Horizontal Line through screen

The LCD monitor is defective, you need to send it back. That's a classic symptom of a bad connection between the LCD controller and the panel. FWIW, I have an ancient LCD here with a vertical blue line through it, same problem. This is nothing to do with your graphics card.

Since you can't break something that's already broken, try this simple test. Press in on the bezel next to the start and end of the line, you may actually see the line come and go doing that, depending on where the poor connection is.

Hi!

So I have an Acer (ugh) monitor which is a few years old. About two years ago I had a problem where there was a white (semi transparent) line that ran across the monitor about 1/3 of the way down the screen. It appears even on the Acer boot screen (i.e. before it gets video) so it should be a hardware problem with the screen.

It isn't black so it's not dead pixels, and it doesn't seem like stuck pixels either. It's almost like it's the connector at the side of the screen or something? I don't know too much about how precisely LCD monitors work though.

Does anyone have any ideas other than "buy another monitor" or "put up with it"? I'd greatly appreciate some suggestions.

Thanks!

A:Horizontal line on monitor

If you don't want to buy another monitor or put up with it then your only other option is to open the monitor up and look around. I would say its probably not a loose cable(you would have a much more noticeable issue if it were that). It could simply be a electronics failure or even a damaged cable. I believe most Acer monitors have a 3 year warranty.

I assume that it is there when you are in the BIOS and during booting etc? If so, and it's under warranty, send it back

Otherwise you would have to take it apart and likely replace the LCD panel which would be a major chore unless you were an EE or an assembler.

Hello,
I have a thin black line running horizontally across the top of my screen. It has been persistent for weeks now. If it were a few mm higher it would not even be noticeable. I have exhausted every option I can think of so far. Here is how it came to be:
I decided to dust out my pc with compressed air, I then played some overwatch and decided to OC my video card and CPU because my GPU temperatures were lowered from the cleaning.

I overclocked my 290 to 1100/1260 with MSI afterburner and my i5 3570k to 4.0 GHZ through the asrock z77 extreme 4 BIOS using these settings I found online:
Offset mode
All Core=40
Additional Turbo Voltage: +0.004v
Offset Voltage: +0.005v
Enhanced Halt State (C1E): Enabled
CPU C3 State Support: Disabled
CPU C6 State Support: Disabled
Package C State Support: Disabled
Both seem to be mild OCs and after stress testing the temperatures never went about 80c for either CPU or GPU.

I downloaded Titanfall 2 to try, played it for about 20 minutes, then went back to overwatch and noticed the black horizontal line on my first game. The line is persistent on the desktop, browser and even the BIOS.
To attempt to fix this issue I immediately reverted my CPU and GPU to stock settings. Nothing.

Uninstalled titanfall 2, upgraded my graphics drivers, reseated my video card, changed resolutions, used the secondary DVI slot on my video card, killed all power to PC and monitor and hitting the power buttons to discharge them, still nothing.... Read more

Recently I noticed a dark horizontal line on my desktop display in Win 7
The line is 3 or 4 pixels thick and located about a third the way down screen and extends from the right about two thirds across the screen.

At first I thought it was a flaw in the desktop picture I was using, but I switched it with several others including one of the Microsoft standards and the line appeared on them as well.

There is no line on apps that I bring up -- Excel, Word, FireFox etc., only on the desktop display itself so it is not likely the display adapter.

Nor is it the display. I connected it to another computer running Win XP -- no line on the desktop.

I used the display for TV reception -- no problem.

Is there some problem with Win 7 desktop software? I've ruled out everything else. I think the problem occurred right after a windows automatic update.

A:Odd Horizontal Line on Desktop Display

I discovered I could remove the line with a mouse click-and-hold on the left of the line end then drag it to the right and off the screen. Gone! But not for good -- it returns with a system reboot and I must drag it away again. Very mysterious.

OK... I have Windows 7 Premium 64-bit and a SAPPHIRE HD 7970 3GB GDDR5 OC with Boost video card installed. When I have 1 cable on the back of the video card connected to a monitor, all is well. When I connect 2 is when the issue shows itself. I currently have my television as a 2nd monitor via HDMI cable. My computer's main monitor is connected via DVI cable. I've tried other cables (same type and display port), to no avail. When I attempt to watch a movie from my computer to my TV, I get a horizontal line in the video with a VERY slight lag between the two sides. When I disconnect my main monitor, the line disappears on the TV. The line is not on the main monitor, just the TV. I've even tried different TVs... same problem. I believe it's something within Windows 7 because I've had this same issue with other video cards. I've tried uninstalling the video drivers and using windows drivers instead, but issue remains. If you make the video screen smaller so you can still see the desktop and click on the box to drag it along the horizontal line, part of the box that intersects the line slightly drags behind the rest of the box. I've even tried disabling Aero.

I know I rambled trying to explain my issue... but I hope someone reading it can identify this problem and help with a solution.

unwanted horizontal line in Word 2010
My OS is Windows XP and I've recently upgraded to Word 2010.
In a large Word file I keep having a problem with an unwanted horizontal line appearing randomly thoughout the file. Can't delete it, no matter what I try. It does show up when you print. It is as wide as the margins of the page. My format is left justified and the copy is single-spaced.
I've tried the obvious, like making sure there are no borders, etc. but to no avail.
It probably does have something to do with file size, since I've not seen it happen in smaller files.
Anyone have a clue?
Thanks,
Stephanie

Hi kirstynoelle, Welcome to the HP Support Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More. I saw your post regarding the green line across the screen. It could be either a software or hardware issue but I am leaning towards hardware. If you can provide me with your product number and your operating system we can try reinstalling your graphics driver. If you have an external monitor you can connect that and if you are getting the green on the monitor then we know for sure it is a software/driver issue. If the line doesn't show up on the monitor then it is a hardware issue. As for returning the laptop you wouldn't be able to return to a different store that sells HP products. You could always talk to Curry's PC World to see if they have another branch or franchise somewhere else that you could return it to. If it is a hardware issue HP would look at replacing the detective components. Thank you,

Greeting, I have black horizontal line at the top of my screen started 3 weeks back and I was thinking it will be fixed by itself with a restart or some updates. The problem I had is as in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hog2MpgOMSY. My laptop is Yoga 720 with UHD screen and I noticed the problem appeared after upgrading the BIOS. To be precise, I can?t recall if the problem appeared immediately after the BIOS upgrade or not, as I lightly use the laptop. Does someone experience the same problem? is it hardware issue or software issue? My warranty just expired today and I am not currently in the US and the laptop is not supported internationally. Thanks,

A:Yoga 720 UHD Screen Black Horizontal Line

Hi saba-7,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

You can try checking the same line in the BIOS although it may be faint, This isolates the issue to the LCD specially if it does not appear in an external monitor. Possible hardware intervention is a likely solution.

Perhaps you can also chat with Lenovo US tech team (open only during business hours, change flag and language on top to English US ) for other options. I suggest you do it right now.

I hope this helps answer your query.
Update us how it goes.

Thanks in advance for helping here, because I am at a loss as to how to fix this. . .

I have a Panasonic 35" TV. I have a coaxial cable connected to the back input. Occasionally, the screen picture will go black, with a single line of compressed video appearing across the middle of the screen. The sound is unaffected. If I jiggle the coaxial cable slightly, usually by pushing or pulling it slightly, the problem goes away. Until I let go of the cable.

And yes, the coaxial cable is firmly screwed into the input jack.

The input jack at the back of the TV set does seem to have a little play. The metal plate containing the input jack moves slightly when pushed or pulled, and this restores the picture.

Thanks, Chris.

If notebook is brand new bring it back as soon as possible and ask for replacement.
On this virtual way it is not easy to say what is wrong there but it can be related to defective display, especially if you can see it from the first moment when notebook is on.

Don?t try anything. Ask for new one. If you cannot get replacement contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help. They must exchange defective part.

Hi

I?m afraid the issue is related to an hardware problem.
Either the internal display is affected or the graphic chip on the motherboard is faulty.
In both cases the hardware needs to be replaced?
Therefore you should get in contact with an service partner available in your country to get this fixed?
Hopefully your warranty is valid?

Hi, My laptop purchased 6 months ago, has developed a black horizontal line towards the bottom right of the screen; the line is hotizonally 2 inches (5cm) wide and 1/16th of an inch, (2mm).  I'm using windows 10 but unsure if its 32 or 64 bit. Any ideas how to get rid of it please?

Vista. narrow whilte line is centered but both sides end roughly two- three inches from the sides (have a 15 inch screen). It disappears as soon as I move to another screen/program. Icons when moved over line, re-below or above it. Even at the ends of screen where the line has ended, same thing happens. Has been this way for over a month; I just lived with it. It does't respond to cleaning with Ad-Aware, Error Expert, or CCleaner.

I've grown more concerned as I've also been having (growing more frequent) intermittant problem printing certain kinds of docs., typically PDF's.... They come out just blurry enough to be extremely irritating to read. Occasionally, I've printed docs. where some type (page and doc. description are normal, but body of doc. is blurry.

Tonight (b4 finding your site), I attempted to reload Adobe Reader 9, thinking a corruption of that software, might be the cause. I downloaded from the Adobe Co. site. Halfway thru, I got an AVG (free version) message that it detected a Trojan. But I allowed AVG to close the program. I used repair feature to version 9 to no avail.... tried downloading version 8.1, and that didn't do anything to print quality, either.

Any thoughts? Thanks much!

Dump Adobe reader and use Foxit, not a resouce hog like Adobe.

After the system rebooted from updating, I initiated a disk clean up for the system files. But the deleting took so long I decided to connect my laptop to an hdmi and watched a movie while waiting. But the deleting hasn't completed yet even after I'm done watching so I disconnect the hdmi and left the laptop for a while. The dispay had timed out when I return so I double tapped the touchpad and when the screen turn live again a white horizontal line is in the screen, it looked like connecting lines when you dragged your cursor on you desktop. Line still appears in BIOS but is fine when connected on hdmi. Any solutions for this problem? Thank you in advance for answering.

The computer is a Dell Inspiron 1525 Laptop Computer running Windows Vista.
Last night a small white line randomly appeared underneath the taskbar, bumping it up a millimeter and then it grew and covered the whole taskbar and parts above it as shown in the pictures (attatched).
This white line shakes a bit and reflects the actions of the mouse (Pic 2).

I restarted the computer to see if it would fix it but instead, i got a BSoD when the computer turned back on.

Can you please tell me the resolutions to this and if you need any further info ill post it.
Nick

If possible go ahead and send a crash dump over. Though honestly that looks like the backlight on the monitor has gone crazy, or perhaps a video problem, so the bsod may be unrelated. Still doesn't hurt to try.

At least from the pictures that looks like it's a physical light being emitted from the back (kinda like the monitor went bonkers there on the bottom) and less of a software predicament. Again though, best to test out software possibilities before considering it hardware.

My laptop screen spontaneously is displaying a thin horizontal black line in the middle of it - it shows up both on the laptop and on an external monitor. It's not there at first boot-up but is displaying when Windows 7 starts up.  This is my work computer and the local IT guy has done some diagnostics but isn't sure what to do next.  Have only had this computer since last May, hasn't been dropped or damaged. The line is getting very annoying - what can be done?

Hi sibehusky,
Thank you for writing to Dell Community Forum.
Please check in BIOS and also in the below steps if the line is seen:
Press and hold the D key on the keyboard while pressing the Power button, then release both at the same time.
This will initiate A grey screen, then Red, then Blue, then Green then White, to allow you to inspect the entire LCD
Please click my DELL-username and send me a Private Message with the Dell Service Tag number and your email address.

Problem: brief flickering of white horizontal lines, always postioned close to the top of screen, various lengths.
Time of occurence / how often:
First happened around September 17th, after I installed "rainmeter" (I don't think this is the reason, and have since uninstalled).
The flickering happens a few times in succession, and then stops for a few seconds or minutes. It's distracting enough that I stop what I'm doing. It seems like it happens more often when the computer's used for more computationally heavy tasks (Visual Studio, Android Studio, ArcGIS, Office+Excel+Powerpoint+A dozen chrome tabs at once, etc). I've also noticed it when the computer has been on for a while without computationally heavy programs running. It does not seem hot to the touch but I think it is warmer when the flickering happens.

What I've done so far:
I have uninstalled and re-installed/updated drivers for my graphics card & display which did not seem to fix the problem.

I now suspect it's a hardware issue, but I am not well versed in troubleshooting hardware issues.

I would appreciate feedback on how to troubleshoot (what steps should I take) to diagnose this issue. What parts may need replacement. Also if this is enough information that you suspect specific issues I'd love to hear them! Otherwise if you need more information, let me know!

Additional Info (that may or may not be helpful, hopefully I'm not giving you red herri... Read more

Good People,
Add me to the list of people who don't like the new ribbon.

Before with 2007 I could insert a horizontal line of a certain width AND NOT using the auto option where 3 equals turns into a horizontal line. Now in 2010 the most I can get a minimal width horizontal line.

I do not want to use one of the "graphic" selections. How do I put a 5 point horizontal line on a page. I like these simple things as separators.

Please only respond if you have actually done this on WORD 2010.

Oh yes, must clarify I'm working with the beta version of Word 2010.

A:word 2010 insert horizontal line & not automatically

Hello Karl.

On the home tab, expand borders.

Click on horizontal line.

Rt. click the new horizontal line and select format horizontal line.

Should show you this box.

Haven't figured out how to make a dashed or dotted line yet.

Hope this helps.
