how to permanently change mtu?

Q: how to permanently change mtu?

hi, anyone can tell me how to permanently change the mtu for a given network device in win7? the cmd "netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface ?NameOfConnection? mtu=XXXX store=persistent" does not work for me: mtu value goes back to initial after reboot...
thank you

Preferred Solution: how to permanently change mtu?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: how to permanently change mtu?

you can modify the windows registry for this as well.

click start type regedit the navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\[Adapter ID]]

(Find the correct adapter you want to change on your machine, there may be multiple entries depending on the number of adopters you may have)

the right click and create a new REG_DWORD, name it MTU, set the value after that.

hope this helps

Cheers !!

When I am typing, sometimes I get the character ? instead of ?. After doing some research, all you need to do is select the English(US) instead of English(Can) in the language bar. Apparently, it seems that this language setting only effects the individual software instead of all the software installed on your computer. So for example, if I changed this language setting in Word, this setting will not roll over to Notepad or Chrome or even the OS.

I am wondering if there is a way to permanently save the English(US) setting so it will apply to all of my software?

A:Change Language Permanently

If you go to Regional and Language Settings in the Control Panel, you should be able to set it to English (United States) so that all software defaults to this. Additionally, you can go to the "Keyboards and Languages" tab and click on "Change Keyboards" to ensure that English (US) is installed. If not, you can add it.

I have really tried everything i can think of and researched so much for answers.
Please, i only formatted my computer 2 months ago and then this came out of the blue. I am about to start back at school and i dont want my computer to go bust. I need any help possible.
I wake up and i log on and what comes up is not what my profile I logged into looks like and so i figured that my comp had a quick lapse in ability like it had before that made it assume a temp profile because mine could not be found.
* So i log out and log back in. No fix. Open my comp check all connections. No fix. System Restore. No Fix.
* That's when i found out that i was in TEMP.ESM-01 login not Tarik but i clearly logged into Tarik so i ended up freakin thinking my files were gone. So then i checked and found that when i went to Tarik's docs through My computer it came up empty but when i go to Documents and Settings/Tarik/My docs its all there so "phew" i didn't lose anything but why am i not getting that profile to load?
* After looking at it all and doing some research i found out it has to do with roaming profiles yet i don't have a host network i connect to; i am the host. So finally i found something that may have fixed it and downloaded it from Microsoft called "User Profile Hive Cleanup Service".
* Didn't Work but what i did notice is that it creates and replaces the TEMP.ESM-01 Profile folder every time i log in with Tarik. So i guess it a profile that... Read more

Can someone tell me how I can permanently change the default font in Word Pad?

A:Change font permanently in Word Pad?

Hmm, you can use a trick as i think you can't change the default font in Wpad.

Create a rtf document with a "space", select the space, choose your font and size, save as your-template.rtf.
In properties, tick read only to avoid modifying it, be sur that rtf files open with Wpad.
Change your shortcuts to open Wpad so that they open your-template.rtf and that's it.

On my Dell XP Pro, msconfig lists a number of applications (not services) from 3rd party vendors, such as HP and QWest, scheduled to launch at start-up. Several times, I've unchecked these items, clicked APPLY, and then re-started my system; nevertheless, when my system has finally rebooted, Windows Task Manager shows them running, and I have to eliminate them in Windows Task manager.

So it appears that somehow, there is some application somewhere that is reversing (i.e. ignoring) my (new) settings I try to establish in msconfig. Is anyone familiar with this problem?

I can figure out several ways of dealing with this problem, such as changing the names of these annoying applications (e.g. from application.exe to application.eze) so they cannot be found (therefore cannot launch), but I'd sure like to know what software it is on my machine that keeps overriding my choices. And also how to change the start-up menu permanently without changing the names of the relevant offending programs.

A:Cannot permanently change msconfig settings

msconfig is a diagnostic utility. If you want to permanently manage startup items you should use a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml).
Uncheck whatever you don't want started in that app and let's go from there.

There are a whole bunch of XP services that launch automatically when you start up Windoze. These can be turned off manually by using services.msc.

But I've found that at least some of these can not be turned off permanently. An example is Automatic Updates.

Does anyone know if it is possible to turn these off permanently? One obvious way would be to change the name of the service, and that's not hard to do, but there must be a "proper" way to do it. Anyone have any ideas?

A:How to permanently change Services that launch

Using Automatic Updates as in your example, if you right click the Service, Properties and set the Startup Type to Disabled and reboot, does that not keep it from starting again? If you disable Automatic Updates, you will then get an informational message about that, which you will also have to disable (if you want). If you have particular fussy ones, tell us which and maybe we can help. I don't think renaming is a good method.I have many disabled service too. anyone know how to change user variable permanently for TEMP and TMP path using script for every user profile?

when I use:
setx TEMP "c:\temp", it will change the reg type to REG_SZ instead of REG_EXPAND_SZ

A:change user variable permanently for TEMP and TMP

...which is OK because there is nothing to expand in "c:\temp", right?
If you wish to continue using %USERNAME% in those environment vars, you could use something like
set unvar = USERNAME
setx TEMP "c:\Users\%%unvar%%\temp"

which will give you REG_EXPAND_SZ along with "%USERNAME% in it.

I am trying to have my computer boot Linux by default, from an external hard drive, while my internal drive has Windows 10 on it. Unfortunately I cannot get it to work: Windows 10 boots automatically at every restart and cold start.

Steps I've taken so far:
The boot order I want is set and saved in BIOS. There's no uEFI on my computer.
Windows 10 fast startup option is disabled. I also disabled the hibernation option just in case.

Still, I can only get Linux to boot by going into BIOS every time and selecting the (already selected) external hard drive again. When I then try to mount the internal (Win 10) disk from within Linux, I get an error saying it cannot be mounted because Windows 10 is still using it.

Any ideas how to solve this and give full boot control back to BIOS?

I had problems with vista, so i created a new partition, installed a different version of vista, then formatted the original OS partition. (obviously i had no idea what i was doing, but thats beyond the point)
Now i have a problem with the new partition i created for vista.
The default drive on where to save things is C:
however, C: is my OS drive
how can i change it so that all files are downloaded to D: without manually entering it everytime?

Or, would simply changing the Drive letters work?
if so, how do it do it? Ive tried using the vista maintenance tools, but i get an error saying it cannot be changed because of files in use.

Or, should i get a new harddrive, remove the old drive, install a partition on it named c:, install vista on that. (i would assume the original vista disc i have has the ability to create a partition on it when booting from disc.. its preactivated)

Im not really looking for the easiest or cheapest way to do it. I have just googled the crap out of this, and im not really finding the info im looking for, because im not really sure what its called.
So any suggestions would be very helpful

How can I permanently change a single file's icon?

I have organized some backups as ISO files, and would like to have a different icon for each file.

I have created an .ICO for each file.

IconChanger worked great, but only while the program was installed. Once I had all the icons changed and thought I was through and uninstalled the program, all the icons went back to their original disc icon.

Is there a way to permanently change a single file's icon, so if I move it to another machine it will retain the icon?

Technically, yes, a "resource editor" can be used to alter icons embedded in executables. However, once you start haxx0ring an app, most software vendors would see that as a violation of their terms of use, which is why I won't provide further technical detail (I realise you're asking for entirely innocent reasons).

I can't imagine it would be worth your time though. It's just an icon, after all.

hi, randomly the other week my computer became extremely slow and would often hang, so i did some investigating and one way or another i discovered that setting the priority of a certain instance of svchost.exe (the one that hosts the service "Network Connections" among others) to Above Normal seems to do the trick.

i have no idea why this works but it seems to, and so i wanted to know if there is a way to permanently set the priority of this process to above normal without having to manually adjust it every time i start my computer.

i should mention i tried downloading the program "Prio" which claims the ability to save settings on priorities but unfortunately it doesnt work with svchost.exe

does anyone know how to permanently change the priority of this process?

A:Windows Mail - Permanently change preview panel option

Hello Decorlady, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might consider giving Windows Live Mail a try instead. It is better in my opinion.

It supports Pop3, IMAP, HTTP website (EX: Hotmail) email, and is a lot more stable. Plus, WLM will minimize to a tray bar icon, checks spelling as you type messages, and has a separate Inbox for each email account. WLM will automatically import Windows Mail messages, accounts, and settings into it. Contacts will have to be manually imported from within WLM. (Tools, Contacts, File, Import, Address book for current Windows User.) To see the Menu bar, press ALT+M and check "Show all menus".

Hope this helps,

A:How do I PERMANENTLY delete "permanently" deleted files from my computer?

Those files are still there, but we arent able to access/see them .. I just know that Windows "hide" these files from the tables, but it leaves the registry of these files "open" so other information can be written over.

That means... By the time your files will be overwritten by other information and slowly they will permanently be deleted.

I have a problem with the processor-cooling fan on my laptop computer - it's on all the time from boot-up and it is very annoying. This has only happened in the last week or so, and there have been no recent hardware or software changes that I can think of. I have checked the task manager and the processor usage is always around 0%.

I have removed all non-essential start-up programs, services and USB/network connections - it makes no difference. I have done a virus, Adaware and Spybot checks and no problems were reported.

Fortunately I can switch the fan off via a fan on/off button on my laptop and the fan will stop, but this is not something I want to do manually every time I start the pc - I would rather find-out what is causing the problem in the first place.

Am I doing any harm by stopping the fan? Without it, all programs seem to be operating fine. The area around the processor becomes a little warm, but not enough for the fan to kick-in. It still comes on when when the processor is operating at more than around 80% (which is rare), what bugs me is why it comes on permanently when the processor is relatively cold.

Any help would be appreciated. The fan is not too noisy, but it is very annoying when you are used to a virtually silent laptop.

A:My LCD is permanently black HELP

At the front page where you look at all the threads, the tab marked "new thread" is the way to start one.

But - do you know if the laptop is actually booting up - unless it does the screen will be black. Fans running are not "proof of life".

Try the Caps Lock key, if the light does not toggle from On to Off and back again each time the Caps Lock key is pressed, it's a fairly sure sign the laptop itself is actually dead and not just a screen failure.

If the Caps Lock light does work OK, try shining a bright light (torch?) at the screen, if only the backlight has failed you will still see a very slight picture. Or try an external monitor.

Either way it sounds like a job for a qualified serviceman. We hope that all your work is backed up and safe...

What do you mean by "frozen"? As in a password lock on it in the bios or on the drive? Or is the drive basically dying at this point. Hardware does not lock up or die because of an operating system.

I have two PCs, both with Windows XP - one with XP Home (bought in Jamaica) and the other one XP Media Center Edition (bought in Germany). I am recognizing something very strange with the Jamaican PC:

both are permanently connected to cable broadband Internet connection (same company, same modem). Both have ZoneAlarm firewall and AVG free Home Edition. But while ZoneAlarm replaces the network connection on the German XP and shows properly the Internet usage (incoming/outgoing traffic), on the Jamaican PC the network icon is still besides the ZoneAlarm icon (system tray) and only the network symbol indicates incoming and outgoing traffic but the ZoneAlarm icon shows just the "Z" but no traffic at all. Even more suspicious, the Jamaican PC seems to broadcast all the times without any stop INTO the Internet, based on the nearly permanently lightened outgoing part of the network icon. Really, nearly permanently.

That concerns me.

I tried to find out, if there's any malicious software on my Jamaican PC by using Ad Aware, latest version. Besideds some spy cookies (tracking cookies), Ad Aware couldn't find any bad software. I also removed the hidden SecuROM broadcast software which came with the game "Spore" (EA Games), based on instructions found on the Internet, completely and successfully. Still, the Jamaican PC broadcasts and broadcasts.

Hello. I'm really hoping someone will be able to show me I've just been making a stupid mistake (I'm relatively naive when it comes to computers) and I haven't permanently ruined my HD, but I fear the latter situation may be the case.

Here's the situation. I purchased a new WD 250GB HD and went to install it as a second HD (1st HD being an older Seagate 20GB). It was not recognized and caused the system to hang before loading the OS (even though I had it set as slave). I thought it was probably just the 137GB threshold problem and my MB having an old BIOS (since my MB is an older Soyo that is now discontinued) so I downloaded and flashed an updated BIOS. With only the original HD connected, the computer started up fine so I don't think there was any problem w/ the BIOS flashing.

I again tried to set up the new HD but it still wasn't recognized, so I played around with the jumper settings on both drives to see if I could find a combination that worked. Nothing seemed to help. The larger problem came when I then decided to just hook it back up like normal, and my original HD began to not be recognized either.

I don't think it's the MB port or the IDE cable, because the same port/cable will allow BIOS to detect my DVD drive but not my HD. All I can think is that I somehow physically broke my HD while trying different cable/jumper positions. Because I'm not all that experienced with computers, I thought I was ove... Read more

A:Did I permanently ruin my HD?

messing with jumpers and sequencing won't ruin your hard drive. Static electricity and dropping it will!

The problem is your older hard drive is probably a "dumb" drive without S.M.A.R.T. technology. When used in tandem with a SMART drive, BIOS gets confused. I would suggest using the new drive as a primary. Format and configure that drive first. Once completed, add the older hard drive as a slave

Hi folks,

this is not a problem which am facing. this is more of a general problem which i have seen on my parents' or friends' PC.

how to enable the WZC permanently in windows XP? the problem which i have seen - we can enable WZc from the services menu by making the service automatic and starting the service, but after a restart the wireless card utility becomes active and it disables the WZC automatically.

One of the solution which i came across is if i disable the wireless card utility from the utility window and go through the process of enabling WZC as mentioned earlier, it will get disabled after a restart. but this, at times, is pretty confusing and complicated as some utilities will never give u an option to disable itself.

hopefully you will be able to give some solution to fix this... any special command or even a magic wand will do ..

thanks in advance

I have Check 86 from Cox , Bazooka and McAfee but still get adware popups. I deleted a ton of stuff with Bazooka instructions and must have also deleted some appearantly needed files. I think I may have to re-setup windows but don't want to lose all the stuff on the drive. anyway, I saw a similar problem from a guy named GRIM and followed the directions given to him by firman1 and am hoping someone can tell me what I can have Hijack "fix" to permanently get rid of "winhost32.exe" and others.

I have just discovered that it is possible to recover deleted materials off of someone’s computer using certain programs. Now I'm not sure just how legitimate these programs are or even if they work as I have yet to take them on a test drive but I am curious. Does anyone know if this is true, that these programs can obtain materials you deleted on your PC, and if so were do these deleted files go and how do you go about permanently deleting them...

It has occurred to me that sure these programs can be useful in some cases but I don’t think they are always used for the right reason and possibly could obtain CC info and so on from deleted emails and such?

Thanks in advance

Every time I log on to IE6, my browser is hijacked to a "netsearch" site and then a Porn site is displayed.

I have traced the problem ( I Think) to the following 2 lines using HijackThis.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.ndlybuyzctp.biz/Jp/cJ2Ln...wQ9nUwGDYs.html
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.gxvtrtlfiuhuh.com/7oXKmh...U6dWRUy/M/E.jsp

However every time I fix( delete) these from the scan they immediately appear again.

I guess they must be resident somewhere but I cannot find them.

I'm very frustrated as nothing I seem to do can remove them permanently

Anyone out there able to help?

I am running WIn XP with Service Pack 2

A:How can I remove these Permanently

post a full hjt log - also hjt should be version 1.98.2

i suspect there is a startup program - which needs removing

Try not to reboot
Currently the Spyware identified by the security experts and especially the morphing and breeding .exe`s in the new variants of CWS, after every re-boot required by Ad-Aware and Spybot etc, just spawns more and more files for the poster to find and delete. This is making the advice the security experts give just too hard to follow.
One of the security experts recently had one log with over a hundred files, they guy had to format c: drive.

Download and copy hijackthis to its own folder , it makes backups so keeping them separate and available can be useful.

Note the Spyware tools websites are very often under attack and so I have provided more than 1 location to download from:

http://www.sherrylynn.us/privacypolicy (this has an older version 1.97 - if you can not get to any of the above sites)

Close all open windows and open Hijack This. Click “Scan”. When the scan is finished (it only takes a second), the scan button will change to “Save Log”.
Click on “Save Log” and then save it to NotePad.
Click on “Edit” – “Select all” – “copy” and then “paste” into t... Read more

Well people, these viruses are on the school computer and I want to get rid of it.
It's been almost 6 or 7 months now and the only person that is trying to clean the computer is me.
Help me out people, thx.
BTW: MBAM doesn't work and using IE is impossible now (I can use the calculator to surf the web though)
EDIT: Safemode doesn't work; when start up normally, the desktop will freeze and nothing but the pointer will move (I got around that from "Last known good configuration" when I pressed f8 rapidly).

Possible Virus/Worm in startup (msconfig)

lsass.exe (it could be capital case "i" or lower case "L")
lvqiox.exe (it could be capital case "i" or lower case "L")
lvrioy.exe (it could be capital case "i" or lower case "L")
lwrioy.exe (it could be capital case "i" or lower case "L")
qlviis.exe (it could be capital case "i" or lower case "L")
qttask.exe (it could be quick time)
smax4pnp.exe (don't know what that is)

oh yeah, that's alot. there MAY be more, but i'm not risking it.

A:A few viruses that I want to get rid of PERMANENTLY

Hello the best way now with a few of those is by posting an HJT log.You will need to run HJT/DDS.Please follow this guide. Preparation Guide For Use Before Using Hijackthis. Then go here HijackThis Logs and Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal ,click New Topic, give it a relevant Title and post that complete log.Let me know if it went OK.

Hi, I'd numlock to be on when the laptop is powered on, but I can't find the setting in the BIOS. Is there one? Thanks,David

A:Keep NumLock permanently on

Is not an issue from BIOS but a bug in windows 10 and 8. https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/3gjcxd/numlock_disabled_after_booting_up_windows_10/ You can do what is written in the post but you will need to TURN OFF the fast startup in windows 10 in order to make it work. The problem is known from ages and (still) microsoft does not fixed it. you can check in the feedback app in w10 that the problem is reported countless times.

Over the weekend we had two computers infected with what appeared to be the "UPS Virus" although it is not clear whether we actually giot the infection from a fake UPS email or not, but the pattern of infection was typical of what others were reporting.

Among the files in the infection was a file called KARINA.DAT - on our Win XP systems this file resided in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 folder. The interesting thing about this file is that after we had removed all other visible problems, this file persisted. It would keep coming back at bootup even if deleted.

There was a registry key which would cause the file to load at startup. I am not at that site so I don't have the exact key name or location, but one of the words in the key was "appinit". Going into regedit and doing a search for KARINA.DAT should reveal the exact key. When the key value referring to KARINA.DAT was deleted, it too would be restored at bootup.

My first thought was to make a dummy file called KARINA.DAT to fool the unknown guardian program. This worked, but had unacceptable side effects. The registry call apparently hooks KARINA.DAT into everything that is launched - so whenever any program - even DOS apps, would launch an error messagwe would come up that KARINA.DAT was "not a valid windows image". You could click through to start the app, but the annoyance was unacceptable.

SO next, I googled "dummy dll" and found a dll that loads but does nothing.... Read more

Hi Steve and welcome to BC! This file can normally deleted by using the delete-on-reboot function that many tools possess. Basically, instead of deleting a file in safe mode, it deletes the file on reboot, before the operating system has been loaded, therefore giving much less chance of the file being active when you try to delete it. This normally means the file if more often than not, deleted. In the future I would recommend this method..Do you have Hijackthis installed on the user's PC? If not, download/install it:http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/_d.../HJTInstall.exeHere are instructions for using the tool. Open hijackthis, click 'config' (bottom right) Choose the tab 'misc Tools' on top.Choose 'delete a file on reboot'. In the field, copy and paste the filepath you want to delete.Click open. Hijackthis will tell you that this file will be deleted on next reboot and if you want to reboot now. When asked if you want to reboot now, say Yes..Allow the PC to reboot, if it doesn't do it automatically, reboot manually. In my experience, that's one of the best and safest methods to removing stubborn files. In regard to your other question, it's impossible to tell whether the file was deleted by your AV on the other computer without seeing the detection logs. However, it is possible that even though both PCs were infected with the same malware, it just so happened on one it was able to 'hook' itself deep into the computer, w... Read more

This must have been asked before, but I cannot find an answer. I use Outlook Express. When I want to clean up my "Deleted Files" folder, each time I try to delete for the final time, I get a pop-up... "Are you sure you want to permanently delete these message(s)"

It's a small thing, but very aggravating to me. Does anybody know a tweak that can stop this message from appearing?

A:are you sure you want to permanently delete these message(s)

Would it be convenient for you to go to "tools">options>Maintenance tab and click on "empty deleted items folder on exiting O.E."?? Be aware however that once you put an E-mail into the deleted folder & then exit with these settings in this way they are gone! No second chances to keep them around for a while!
