Notebook looks like it went to sleep but power button stays ...

Q: Notebook looks like it went to sleep but power button stays ...

When I walk away from my computer, after a while the screen goes black like it does when it goes to sleep. Sometimes it does actually go to sleep and the power button blinks, then I just press it to wake it up. However the majority of the time the screen goes black but the power button stays lit up. When this happens, pushing the power button or any key will not wake it up. I have to push and hold the power button to shut it down then turn it back on. This happens multiple times a day sometimes and can get very irritating. I do not get any error messages or anything. The only recent thing is the update to windows 10 and my internet connection is through a mobile hotspot on my cell. Any help would be very much appreciated! Thanks!!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Just got the notebook for my daughter for Christmas and this just happened:  I was trying to run the recommended HP updates and it said "installing" for a long time.  Meanwhile, I opened up Chrome and it locked up saying "not responding".  So I stopped the install action to see if it would help but to no avail.  Then I tried Ctrl-Alt-Del to get to the task manager but nothing.  Tried that several times.  I was finally able to get task manager open by right-clicking the task bar below.  Once in task manager I couldn't end task on Chrome.  Then I couldn't shut it down by holding the power button.  I was finally able to shut it down from the start menu.  Now the power light is on but notebook won't turn on.  I tried everthing I could find online so far with no luck.  The HP Support link was a dead link.  The only thing I am doing at the moment is trying to wear down the battery.  I've got a USB light plugged in and it is on.  Has anyone else had this problem?  Any solutions??  Thanks!

Dear readers,

I have a problem with my monitor/pc. 2 nights ago i turned of my pc, and the next day i tried to turn it on, it runs like usual, no weird sounds came up when i push the power button, but my monitor did nothing. I replaced it with another one and that one worked fine till today. Today i have the same problem as i did yesterday but switching monitors didn't work. I can't see anything from start till... i don't know how far my computer boots. I tried the following : switching video cards with no results, switching monitors, resetting my bios, switching rams, put 1 of the 2 rams in, looked if my cpu was correct in everything without any result.( It worked 2 full days without any problems!) I connected my monitor 2 my laptop and in that situation it works fine. My computer is like 1 week old and when it's on i don't experience any problems. on my monitor there is a green ledlight that is constantly going on/off

some specifications:
Dual core 1.8
FSB 1033
2gb ram
Video 3850 HD
monitor is a standard CTR screen / tried a synmaster 151s aswell

I am out of options please could some GOD help me!

Already much appreciation and sorry for my bad english!

I'm having a problem with my computer monitor. It used to be okay but somehow the computer monitor power button is not green now, instead it's yellow, therefore there's nothing on the screen. I checked the power cable and connection to the cpu and it seems alright. I also shut down the computer and monitor and waited for a minute, the computer booted fine but when I turned on the monitor power button, it was green for a few seconds and then turned yellow.

Can somebody tell me what seems to be the problem with my monitor? And how would you suggest to fix it?
Thank you much.

A:Computer Monitor Power Button Stays Yellow

Check the cable from the monitor to the video adapter at the back of the case. Then you'll need to try another monitor. If it works the problem is inside the case. Making sure your video card if you have one is secure or trying another one would be next.

Hi every one,
Recently I purchased new PC,
After installing windows XP Pro SP3 I found that there is a missing button in Power option properties. The missing button is (When I press the sleep button on my computer), I can find only (When I press the power button on my computer).
My system configuration is as follow
Mother board Gigabyte EP45-UD3R Rev 1.1
My graphic card is ATI Radeon HD 5670
Windows XP SP3
RAM 4Gb Kingston DDRII
CPU Core 2 Quad 2.66 GHz
It worth saying that I can shutdown, hibernate or put my PC into sleep mode, so the functions are working but only the button is missing.
I will appreciated very much if some can advise me how to restore the missing button. Is there some option in BIOS that will enable this button?
I contacted Gigabyte customer support, but they directed me to Microsoft, I also contacted ATI but they directed me to Microsoft or BIOS settings. In my BIOS I can't find any option that may affect this button. Any advise will be appreciated
Best regards

A:[SOLVED] Button of (When I press sleep button) is not available in my Power option pr

Does the case actually have a separate Sleep Button? I suspect it's not even connected, as the motherboard manual doesn't show a connection for a Sleep Button, only a Power Button.
Windows Power Options won't list it, as it doesn't exist.

If you have a Sleep Button on the keyboard, it might not be listed in Power Options either. That would be up to the Driver software to add that option. You may have to use the software that came with the keyboard to configure the sleep button on the keyboard.

Ok, I have had this happen on two of my computers now.

When I turn on my computer it sounds like it powers on, the fans turn on the green light on the motherboard comes on saying it has power, it Sounds like the HDD turns on and starts running. Ive taken out the Graphics card and plugged the cord into the onboard video, still nothing, ive reset the graphics card, tried putting in only one stick of ram, with each one, (i have 4 sticks 4 1GB) still didnt work, reset CMOS, reset processor, also normally before the monitor stops working either the audio or the onboard LAN stops working, im not sure if its because one of the motherboard screws i use is plastic maybe not giving a good ground.

if u have any further questions let me know, ive tried almost everything but if you think of something it could be let me know, i sent in the motherboard, thank god for warranties, but i really dont want this to happen to my new motherboard. so any help would be appreciated

BTW i did build this computer components from newegg.com, case from xoxide.com

I don't know the motherboard or the case designs ( maybe someone else will )
The green light is for the RAM it is on a different power rail ( and Voltage ) to the Mainboard rail.
Things to check when the new MoBo arrives before you power the unit ON
< The clearance underneath the MoBo ( with all the components attached ) between it and the case. It needs to be a positive gap try for at least four post-it-notes wide, more if the fans vibrate the board
< That the fasteners that do get used for earthing the MoBo to the case are tested with an resistance metre ( 0.00 ohms )
< That the fasteners that do not get used for earthing the MoBo are insulated against this happening

Hello,
After putting my computer into sleep mode last night, I was unable to get it to boot into windows this morning. When i pressed the power buttong, everything turn on and working (all fans are functional, gpu power led is on, all hard drives & cd drives are functional. But the problem is, the screen to my monitor is blank. I also noticed that my usb aren't working (mouse connection light isn't on). I tried a soft power off by holding down the power button but no luck. The system does not turn off no matter how long I hold it. The only way to turn it off is by pulling the power supply cord or turning the power supply switch off.

A:Windows 7 blank screen after sleep mode (unable to power off with power button)

Hello,

Is it possible that you can test with another compatible PSU? I would strongly suggest doing so.

Also try the following steps:
?Make sure that the (internal) speaker is connected to the motherboard
?Remove all memory and attempt to boot the PC
?You should get the no memory beep errors

If the Power Supply is in working order and no beeps are present then it can be indicative of a faulty motherboard.

For troubleshooting purposes it may be a good idea to remove the components from the case and bench test to rule out a short.

Please let me know the difference between sleep button and power button

Is sleep button the one which will be on the keyboard?

On the CPU there will 2 buttons one will be to start the computer and another one to restart computer?

Can these buttons be used to work like to enter in sleep mode, hibernate mode etc(Making changes in power options in control panel)

I'm having windows 7 computer

A:Power button and sleep button

sleep buttons depend on the manufacturers to where they go. most laptops sleep function is assigned to an F key and used in conjuction with the function or "fn" button. usually on F2 or F3.
These buttons are not programmable via the power options in control panel.

if its a desktop and doesnt have a dedicated sleep button you can reasign the task to either the restart or power button within control panel and or set it to sleep/hybernate after a given time.

First off I'd like to say that I didn't really know where to post this and the last time I googled a similar result it was posted here, and it could potentially be a driver problem I guess, so please excuse me if this is the wrong section. I found these forums while searching the answer to my problem and the people seemed generous and helpful so I thought this would be a good place to ask.

Okay so I've googled and googled for hours to absolutely no avail, so I've tried everything I could think of without asking myself so here goes.

Let me start by stating my specific problem. My laptop will not wake up from sleep without hitting the power button. This means that my external keyboard, external mouse, touchpad, nor built in keyboard can wake it up. My old laptop also running Windows 7 did not have this problem btw. It is quite the annoyance because when I am at home I use my laptop at a desk with an external mouse, keyboard, and monitor.
Just bought this new laptop for graduation. It's a RF711-S02 by Samsung. I'll state some of the specs that could possibly be causing my problem. Processor is an Intel i7 2630qm, nVidia gt540m graphics card (which uses optimus technology, so when that's not on it uses Intel HD 3000), Windows 7 x64. If anything else is needed or relevant, just ask.

I have tried everything I could possibly find over several days and several hours in each day. I've tried the USBBIOSX stuff for the registry, updating all of my drivers, enabling my keyboard to wak... Read more

A:Laptop Won't Come Out of Sleep W/O Power Button

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

This workaround did the trick in Windows Vista so I'll post the link to see if it's of any help to you, it may work with Win 7: Disable Hybrid Sleep Mode in Windows Vista - How-To Geek

Have you tried tweaking your power plans, or switching them off, even? Disable Power Management on Windows 7 or Vista - How-To Geek

Another workaround that has worked for my wife's laptop is to unplug the power cord, remove the battery and hold down the power button for 30-60 seconds to drain the internal capacitors then insert the battery and restart.

Do you have Hibernation on your laptop? If so, you might want to disable it and just use Sleep.

You also need to access the BIOS and setup to allow Wakeup from Keyboard/Mouse
NOTE: If you have a USB keyboard then you also need to setup for USB to wake up.

Hi, maiki

Yes, there is a sleep button. Depending on the behavior of your Fn keys, then you will either press Fn + F4 or simply F4 to put the machine to sleep. I would try to create a new power plan and have the same settings to see if you can get the proper power button behavior.

Hope it helps,
Adam

I'm running Win8 Pro 64 bit on a Dell Precision 490 desktop. I upgraded from XP so it was basically a clean install.

I have my power button configured to put the system to sleep and it will do that ONCE after I turn it on. After that, pushing the power button does nothing until the next reboot or power cycle. Going to Charms -> Settings -> Power -> Sleep always works.

This obviously isn't a critical problem, but it's really annoying because I'm in the habit of hitting the power button and usually it just doesn't work. Has anyone heard of this problem? Is there a fix?

Things I've tried:
- searching Google - can't find the needle in the haystack
- searching this forum - nothing that matches
- checking the Event Log - nothing interesting or suspicious
- apply all Microsoft updates - no change
- disable my Comodo Internet Security - no change
- change power options and then change them back - no change
- checked if I could stop and restart the power service - nope

Does anyone have any other ideas that I could try or tools to track what's going on?

Thanks,
Ed

One thing that baffles me is that when on AC power, I have to press the power button to "wake" the laptop out of sleep
instead of just pressing a key on the keyboard. The power button is this tiny chicklet metal button that is awkward to press.
Any way to set Windows 8 to wake on keypress when on AC power?

You do not find it in Power Options to change power button from doing it? Only know ways if using an external USB device. Should be a sleep button or one of the F buttons or Fn.

My X1 Tablet wil no longer react to the power button, meaning I cannot press it to put the tablet to sleep. I've checked all the usual settings in win10 (power and sleep) and it's set to make my tablet sleep no matter which button is pressed. What's worse, if I put the tablet to sleep from the start button, then the power button cannot wake it up. However, if the tablet is powered off, the power button works fine, so it seems to be a software issue. I've all the various firmwares, windows 10 is up to date as of today and the BIOS settings doesn't seem to have any options for this. Has anyone else experienced this and did you find a solution?

Hi. I pressed the power button once on my laptop to put it in sleep mode. Is this a safe thing to do?

A:Power button sleep mode question

Hi -
Do you mean it was an accident, or deliberate ??
I have never used Sleep Mode on any computer that I have owned -
The safest thing I always think, is to turn the computer Off once you are actually finished with it, or just let it go to screen saver if I am away for an hour -

Your computer / laptop can always wake from sleep mode in its storage bag if there is a scan scheduled for the Antivirus or similar.
If it is in a storage bag, the temperatures can get too high due to lack of ventilation and create problems.

My desktop is switched off at the wall every night, or if I am not using it for the day. The same for my laptop, powered off and left off unless it is wanted.

Since it only takes 30 to 60 seconds to power up I see no need for Sleep or Hibernation mode at any time -

I hope this covers your question -

Naturally I have checked that Power & Sleep Settings are correct (re sleeping when closing the lid). I've also updated drivers from the Dell site and run the Dell online diagnostic test for lid closing.
Any suggestions?

A:Dell XPS 13 shuts down when put to sleep using lid or power button

Some more details:
Uninstalling the video drivers (which helped someone else on this forum with the same problem) didn't fix it.
The problem also occurs if I send the laptop to sleep with the power button, but not if I send it to sleep from the Start menu - seems to work OK.
Also, the problem does not seem to be at the point of sending it to sleep - it acts as if it's going to sleep normally (going off in a couple of seconds) rather than shutting down - but at the point of waking up, when the computer starts up as if it had been shut down.

As I've detailed in my post here, I'm having trouble with closing my laptop and the sleep/suspend not working correctly. I wanted to try and use the power button to put it to sleep to see if that works consistently, but when I go to the power button settings, it doesn't seem to work. I go to Power & sleep settings -> Additional power settings (goes to control panel) -> Choose what the power buttons do and no matter what the setting is, pressing the power button doesn't do anything. I've tried setting it to "nothing", and then back to sleep, or shut down or hibernate, and none of them work. I'm guessing Lenovo has overriden the setting somehow? Anyone can help me with this?

Does this x1 Carbon not sleep from the power button? This is the first time in my many laptops where the computer will not go to sleep after pushing the power button. Is there a way to change it so it does?I know that Fn + 4 makes the x1 Carbon go to sleep but I rather have the power button do this function. Can somebody help me?

A:X1 Carbon power button won't make the laptop sleep

Settings -> System -> Power and Sleep -> Additional power settings -> Chose what the power button(s) does (do).

Hi,

I've disabled the power/sleep button in the start menu a while ago to prevent my children from shutting down the computer. Now they are older and I want to get them to put the computer to sleep when they are not using it. Unfortunately, I can not remember how I disabled the power button. There are no group policies set and I couldn't find any settings on the registry (as suggested in your tutorials Power Button and Shutdown Options - Start Menu). Here is a screenshot of the situation:

Any ideas how I could enable this again?

Hi Tinschel,

Welcome to Vista Fourms.

You might see if this tutorial is what you did. To enable it again, you will just need to delete the ACSettingIndex DWORD in the registry.

Removing the Sleep function in the Shutdown menu

Hope this is it,

My current Win 7 installation was installed in July, 2013. From the time I installed it, I would put it into sleep mode by going to Start > Shut Down "arrow", and selecting Sleep every night. It would go to sleep and the power LED would flash. I would then press the power button the next day and it would wake up.

This worked perfectly until the last week or so. Now when I press the power button the power LED continues to flash for about 3 seconds, and then the light goes out. The only way I can get it to turn on is to press the power switch on the power supply to the off position, leave it off for a few seconds, flip it back to the on position, and then press the power button on the front.

When the computer comes back from this state, it acts like it's turning on from being fully turned off (I see the BIOS screen, etc.), but all the stuff I had open are still there. I guess this is like coming back from hibernation?

I don't know what happened to cause this. I have made no changes to the power configuration, no hardware changes, no driver updates. Maybe it was a Windows update that caused it?

How can I make the power button wake up the computer like it used to?

Thanks!

My Computer wakes up from sleep only when I press the power button but not a button from my keyboard. It is still functional and I can use my computer but I would like to use the keyboard to wake up my computer. It is home built and Windows 7. Any help would be appreciated.

A:My Computer wakes up from sleep only when I press the power button.

Welcome fr4mindia.

My suggestion is to look in your BIOS to see if there is a setting to allow "Wake on Keyboard".

While I am shutting down my PC, my screen is turning off but my power button is still ON and also my keyboard led's were also kept ON. In order to shutdown completly I am doing it manually by pressing and holding the power button for 5 to 6 sec. I am getting this situation even though, I am turning my PC to sleep. It was not going to sleep, my power button is ON continously, it was not blinking as if in sleep mode. Eventhough I close my lid, it was not going to sleep as per my PC power settings (But my screen is getting OFF. Inorder to wake it up, I again has to manually turn OFF PC my pressing and Holding the power button). I have updated my Intel MEI (Current version - 11.0.0.1157). I have also updated Intel HD Graphics Family.  But I can see no improvement. Please help me out with a solution.

Hi,

I am new to windows 7 and i would like to change these settings:

ImageShack? - Online Photo and Video Hosting

I don't get why it's greyed out.

I have a samsung series 9. I have seen something about fast start, but I don't have that application. I removed all the bloatware from my pc.

Making a new plan won't fix this problem either.

I also can't get hibernate to work. It doesn't appear in the start menu.

Greets,
Remco

A:Power/sleep button, closing panel options greyed out

Hi

Since you have removed Fast start

lets try other way

Click start > run

type cmd.exe

Then type "powercfg -restoredefaultschemes"

and then reboot your system...

Let me know if this works

I left my laptop alone for a few minutes and when I came back, my display was off and the power led was blinking. I tried [ressing the power button, but the screen did not turn on and power led continued to blink. At the time the charging led was white, meaning the battery was fully charged. I waited a few days to see if draining the battery would allow me to turn the commputer on but that hasn't worked. Now, when I plug the adapter in and try to turn on the laptop, the charging led (now orange, not white) and the power led blink on and off simultaneously. I tried plugging the display to an external monitor too and since the computer has been stuck in this mode, nothing has shown up. I have viewed the HP page for hard reset but it did not work for me: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01684768 I have also viewed the HP led flashing page and tried the steps. They did not work: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01732674 Can anyone help me fix this asap? This laptop was going strong and I've taken really good care of it. I don't see why this computer should die on me after using it for 4 months.

Hello - I have about 50 Lenovo P series Laptops running in our comapny and within the last month, 2 - P51S same make and model has had power up issues.Users reported that they "control +alt+ Del" to lock out their laptops and when then returned the laptop was DOA. The signs are that the power power light is flashing every second ( Indicates in sleep mode)- FAn attempts to start but does not.I have tried plugging in different AC power adapter, disconnecting both external and internal batteries. No change. I have openned laptop and disconnected SSD, Wireless card, ROM battery, fan, speakers etc testing and no difference. I have tried to discharge by removing all power and and tapping power button 10 times and hold in for 30 seconds. No change.  I find it strange that 2 identical laptops would suffer the same issue at the same time?? Looking on internet - this looks like hugh problem that maybe linked to the motherboard issues on this make and model.I have called Lenovo and since out of warranty - sorry. So please help if anyone has any other ideas to try. Thank you in advance

This is ridiculous. I need support and Experts help. I have a brand new C930 Notebook. The laptop goes to sleep but does not wake up. Only the led light on the power button keeps blinking. I have to hard press to shut it down and then again press the power button after 10 seconds so the laptop would do normal boot. Then the Fingerprint reader does not work. The next restart works fine but from sleep still does not resume. I checked all settings on device maneger power managerment save mode and all available hardware resources are set to "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power" checked. If i change the Device manager lid close action to Hibernate, it works as expected. So computer can resume fine with hibernate and not from Sleep mode. All my device drivers and BIOS is upto date to lenovo recommended versions. I have seen some online forums but nowhere it is known if it is a software issue or Hardware issue. Lenovo Please suggest!
