Yoga 920: external display output suddenly stopped working and USB-PD firmware update didn't fix it

Q: Yoga 920: external display output suddenly stopped working and USB-PD firmware update didn't fix it

The title says it all. I'm very frustrated with this problem since I really need to connect my laptop to an external monitor for work. I've read and tried all relative topics in this and intel forums (e. g: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-Yoga-Series-Notebooks/Yoga-920-can-t-connect-to-any-external-mon...), have done all steps mentioned (including firmware, bios and windows update, windows reset, ...) but the problem still persists. Apparently, most users that had faced the same problem been able to get it worked after installing "Type C Firmware for Windows 10 (64-bit)" or the BIOS update provided by Lenovo. I installed them successfully but nothing changed. I am sure it is a software issue since there is no sign of any hardware one (all devices are fine as device manager shows and diagnostics app found no problem). It was just working fine until suddenly stopped working (probably after some recent windows update). I would greatly appreciate any help.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have been searching in several forums but have not been able to fully fix this problem. It was fixed temporarily and failed again.
This the system I have:

HP TouchSmart tx2 tablet pc with Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (Home Premium) x 64 bit
AMD Turion (tm) X2 Ultra Dual-Core Mobile ZM-82, 2.2 GHz
ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics

I have been working for over a year with an external display Dell ST2310 flat screen monitor and working fine with the "use external display only" setting . From one minute to the other both screen went black so I forced a restart and again the same problem. I decided to manually disconnect the external display by unplugging the VGA cable from the laptop which automatically switched back to the main display as it would if I disconnected the display. When I plugged the VGA cable back in again the same issue both screens were fully black. I disconnected once again the VGA cable so I could change the settings in Windows Mobility. I plugged back in the VGA cable after changing the settings from "external display only" to "mirror monitors" and after playing for a bit with the Windows Mobility Center I got the external display to work back again to my regular settings: "external display only". This solution lasted for a day and now the main display works and the external display screen is fully black.

Solutions I have tried unsuccessfully:
- Changed VGA cables, still experiencing the same issue.
- Tested monitor ... Read more

I unplugged the cable to move my ultrabook, plugged it back in and now the connection with the external monitor is completely dead and won't come back, any chance its something other than the USB C port being broken? It worked fine for 48 hours.

Lenovo automatically installed a BIOS (1.39) and firmware update in November.  Lenovo Vantage says these updates were completed successfully. The touchscreen and pen stopped worked after that.  Windows doesn't recognize the pen or touch input anymore.  Firmware tool says "device not found".   Latest BIOS update (1.40) and Windows update in December didn't help.

I use my laptop regularly to present via LCD projectors using a VGA cable. After a break of 4 weeks, I cannot get the output to work.  On one projector / cable, the display kept flickering on and off, as if the connection to my laptop was physically wobbly at the location where the VGA cable meets the laptop.  On the next projector / cable, my laptop registered that the cable was stable and connected and offered the display options for dual display.  However the display was not shown on the screen.  Both projectors / cables work well with other laptops. Any ideas?

Hi, I installed the most recent firmware update (fwdphb07) and run into problems with my T450s: My displays (two attached via DP, the main display with DP 1.2) stay blank until the windows login screen shows up (no windows is starting screen). The problem is that I have a SSD password so the password dialog is not shown on the external screen. I downgraded the firmware to fwdphb06 (installed fwdphb03 before, because fwdphb06 does not allow for a direct downgrade) and everything works fine again. @Lenovo: can you please fix this issue - if you need more information please contact [email protected] users with the same issue: try to downgrade the FW Have a nice dayMichael

I was using my computer normally, not even listening to music or had any sound on, and suddenly heard some crackling noises and since then the sound has not worked. Was just browsing the internet, nothing hard on the computer at the time.

have looked at many other threads for solution, but couldn't find one that worked for me unfortunately.
(speakers are plugged in, work fine with other audio devices, and are on)

running win7 x64 on a dell xps8300
driver version:
directx 11.0

I believe there is a problem with the internal sound processor on the motherboard since I am able to hear sound with headphones via the front headphone jack. I have re-installed drivers for it/rebooted, with no luck.
Not sure why, but on the sound options (attached pic) it set my realtek digital output as my default communications device, and when i set it to the default device, I couldn't hear sound from the front headphone jack.
In the realtek hd audio manager, it shows that something is plugged into the back panel, but like I said, no sound will play.
Tried disabling front jack detection, but nothing changed

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My Thinkpad Yoga 15 has a problem, which may or may not be related to the BIOS update recently performed. When booting, the bootup screen only appears on an external monitor via the HDMI output. When performing the hardware tests in the BIOS, tests are done on the HDMI-connected display, the internal display does not seem to be recognized. I verified this using both Linux and Windows. It does not seem to be a hardware failure; I have been able to get the display on the internal LCD a few times, by powering down the laptop, holding the power button for about 20 seconds, then powering back on while pressing F1. The laptop will then function for a while, but loses its display after coming out of sleep. Needless to say, this is unworkable. Does anyone have any tips on how this could be fixed in a more permanent fashion or any indication to cause? BIOS does not allow me to turn off NVIDIA, or its opposite, to enable it exclusively. I also tried different drivers, from both Lenovo as well as NVIDIA and Intel, but to no avail. Any pointers appreciated.

Yesterday evening, the USB-C ports of my Lenovo Yoga 920 stopped working suddenly. While working with the computer, the connected external monitor and the laptop screen both went dark and I couldn't revive them by disconnecting/reconnecting any cables or by pressing any keys on the laptop. In the end, I had to force a hard restart of the Yoga 920 by pressing the power button on the right. After rebooting the laptop, I noticed that it completely failed to communicate with any devices connected to the USB-C port, including my external monitor, keyboard, mouse and Ethernet network. First suspecting an issue with the connected USB-C hub (Kensington USB-C Universal Dock 60W (SD4600P)), I performed a full power recycle, including detaching/attaching cables, of all involved components. This had no result. I noticed then in the Windows 10 Device Manager (devmgmt.msc), that the USB device "UCSI USB Connector Manager" was marked as not working (yellow exclamation mark). The status of the device was:This device cannot start. (Code 10) STATUS_DEVICE_POWER_FAILURE Disabling/removing/reinstalling this device in Windows 10 had no effect on the issue. Then I noticed that the laptop didn't charge while connected to the power supply from Lenovo, which was delivered with the laptop. There are two USB-C ports on the left side of the laptop. The one towards the back is marked as the one to use for charging. It didn't work any more. I had to connect the USB-C cable from th... Today Lenovo Vantage updated the firmare for the Intel Management Engine in my Lenovo X1 Carbon (6 gen) to version and after reboot the external monitor I use through my plugable dock stopped working. I was actually using the dock while I did the update so I know it was working right beforehand.  After the update, plugging in the dock (via USB 3) allows me to wake up the machine via the keyboard attached to the dock but the display doesn't come up. Neither does hooking up the display directly to the HDMI port while the laptop is up and running.  Thoughts?

Hi guys, I recently got hold of my new X1 carbon and decided to do a thorough firmware update with vantage. When the trackpoint utility firmware was installed, my laptop flashed with an installation failure notice and rebooted. After that, the trackpoint as well as the mouse above the touchpad no longer worked. I tried the advanced setting in control panel, but the entire trackpoint configuration option was blacked out. Does anybody experience similar issues with this update and have any suggestions on how to do a home fix for this? I have been making do with the touchpad and a bluetooth mouse, but it does not feel very "thinkpad" this way.....

Hey everyone, I've officially got THE worst luck with technology EVER.

Today, my Western Digital 500GB External HDD has stopped working. One minute it's working fine - the next its completely unresponsive. I deleted a music folder off the hard drive that wouldnt play and I dont know if that's been the cause of it to become unstable.

When I plug it in via USB I can feel the disk spinning inside and loading, but the windows sound does not play. About 2-3 minutes later I get the sound but it does not appear under Hard Disk Drives on My Computer. When I try to go into device manager it crashes windows explorer.

After a couple of attempts the name is now "Local Disk I:' and not even 'Elements'

After about 10-15 minutes of being plugged in the drive clicks and won't do anything else.

I REALLY need some of the work off the hard drive - It's so important to my second year at university.

Any help you can give me I will be eternally grateful. Call me a *******, but I usually back up my work via dropbox anyway but theres some bits I didnt back up yet and it's so important I get them.

I've looked at getting a universal drive adaptor but i've heard about data recovery software but there seem to be so many out there - If my hard drive isnt completely screwed could someone reccomend me one or give me some advice?

Thanks in advance.

I did some updates on my Yoga and now my touchscreen no longer works. I have gone to the device manager and updated and checked on it. No luck. My pen works, but the finger touch does not. Nothing else seems to have happened to my computer past the updates. It seems like others seem to have this problem since updating their computers. My computer is no longer under warranty, and since I bought this thing for its touchscreen, I am a little choked that it has gone kaput. Would it have been the update that caused it, or would it have been just a case of it went kaputsky at the same time and it is a mere coincidence? Either way, I am really upset that this machine is broken so soon. Any idea if there is going to be an update to fix this or if it is now just blown?

Hi all,
I am having a problem with Windows Update on my computer that just started yesterday.
First, what happened was that it said that I never checked for updates and it also said "Find about more free software from (null)."
What I did was empty the SoftwareDistribution folder and check again, and that worked.
But today, while I was able to install updates yesterday, my computer is telling me that I've never checked for any updates.
I tried emptying and rebuilding SoftwareDistribution again, but that didn't work. I just keep getting error code 8007000E.
I have even tried the Windows Update Troubleshooter, but it said that it didn't fix the error code. I'm still getting error 8007000E.
Nothing is working.
Is there anything I can do to fix this? Of course, this is a very annoying, yet unexpected problem.
(Microsoft even said "Upgrading to Windows 10 is the best way to fix this problem!" I don't know if that's worth it right  now...)
Best regards,

Then that stopped, yet you can see and hear the hard drive working in reaction to my interactivity?. I promptly replaced the graphics card! THAT DID NOTHING FOR NATIVE OR EXTERNAL VIDEO OUTPUT!!! Ever since updating to Windows 10, my Yoga 2 Pro (model name 20266, Mfg Date 14/08/2014) is unable to connect to an external monitor. Tried a few TVs and a projector using the micro HDMI port. I've connected other computers to each of the monitors so I know they work. I understand how to use WIndows intimately (35 year old software engineer at Google, been using WIndows 20+ years), trust me, this is not a case of me forgetting to use Windows key + P or anything like that. The mirco HDMI port itself (physically) is fine and was working great until the day I downloaded Windows 10. I have been chasing threads trying to find solutions to this.  Found a clue, was directed to the power management driver thread as a possible solution, was told it was not as I was on Windows 10 and was told to start a new thread.  So here it is.Very frustrating as none of my other brands of laptops have issues wth actual buttons working after an update....however Lenovos do.  Here is the situation that occurred after most likely a Windows 10 update. However I cannot be sure it was not a Lenovo update or a Lenovo update hidden in a windows 10 udpate.  All I know is my volume buttons don't work correctly now.  Some specifics.... Holding the function key and hitting escape toggles the fn behaviour. However the light on the mute button never goes off although it does mute and Un mute the volume. It also brings up the onscreen volume display which you can touch and change volume crudely. However while the mute button toggles muting the volume....Although the light stays on....the volume up and down buttons also mute and unmute vs. raising and lowering volume!!!I saw the comment that in windows 10 these buttons are controlled by windows. However not sure why only lenovo has issues with their functions keys after oem or Windows updates. Thanks for any help.BJBBJB

A:PC stopped booting up, no display output

What power supply is it? (company, model, wattage,)

Most low quality power supplies will have little or no transient filter, which filter the incoming AC power and suppresses any voltage spikes. Most of the time when the power is cut the voltage spikes a bit.

Try removing your CMOS battery and you suggested and leave it out for about 10 minutes, and make sure you psu is unplugged and discharged.

You can discharge it by pushing the power button immediately after you unplug it, the lights and fans should flash for a second, then go off.

I had been using a D-Link wireless router for over a year with hardly any problems and recently my wireless internet has stopped working. To make sure it was the router and not the DSL modem itself, I disconnected the router and hooked the modem directly into the computer and my internet connection was fine for that one computer. I tried restarting both the router and modem several times and used different ethernet cords before deciding that it certainly had to be a router problem. So, I purchased a new Netgear router 2 days ago and much to my dismay, the same problems occured when trying to set up that router. The internet light still doesn't show on the modem and the wireless light doesn't show on the router..."No connection detected".

I have heard and seen several similar problems and heard solutions relating to IP addresses and contacting the dsl service (Bellsouth/AT&T), however I am not fully aware or informed of these procedures and was wondering if anyone could give some straight forward help in helping to fix my problem. Nothing has been changed."This happens when I try to rest from the settings, the recovery button, and the advanced startup menu.I'm sure I could replace the LCD but is it really necessary to do so because the touch screen works?I'm not an expert by any means so my apologies if any of this sounded ignorant. Any advice or suggestions will help! Thanks in advance.

This laptop has "succesfully" installed firmware update 1.19 about 30 times now. Everytime windows updates, it "installs" this as well. What gives?
