Turned off Internet Protected Mode and unable to turn it back on

Q: Turned off Internet Protected Mode and unable to turn it back on

Hi, I have turned off my internet protected mode on my IE8 browser and I wish to turn it back on. However, I am unable to do so even though I have reset the browser settings to default under tools > internet option > advance > reset > reset all personal settings. I have closed and restart my browser.

I have done in both on the 1) browser and 2) control panel > internet option but to no prevail. Can anyone please advise me? Thanks!

Preferred Solution: Turned off Internet Protected Mode and unable to turn it back on

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Do you have UAC turned off also? That will keep it from being turned on.

The message is a waste of my screen real estate. Yes, Protected mode is turned off. Sure it is, I turned it off myself, and it will stay off. Now how do I disable this annoying nag message?
Also the messages about File Downloads. Never once in my life I clicked a download link by mistake. Yes, I'm clicking that dang URL, because I wan't to download that dang file, now get out my way, annoying warning message. How do I disable this one
too? Thank you in advance

A:How do I disable the "Protected mode is currently turned off for the Internet zone" message?

Based on my research, this is by design. You cannot disable the warning when you open a new IE windows.

When I use IE 11 (fully updated Win 10 Home) and click on a PDF (i.e., irs.gov, "Form W9" pdf) the PDF will not open unless IE Tools/Internet Options/Security/ Enable Protected Mode is unchecked.  This is strange, since on my other PCs it
is not necessary to uncheck Enable Protected Mode to view PDFs.

I can right-click on a PDF and Save-As, which downloads the PDF.

Other browsers (Firefox, Edge, Chrome, Tor) open and display PDFs as expected.

I have checked all the usual suspects, installed multiple PDF programs ( Adobe Reader, etc.), Uninstalled / Reinstalled IE,  - all with no success.

I've just recently had this happen, but I've been here enough to know I may have contracted a nasty.

Last week my system started hanging up and plain not responding. My wireless aircard refused to work in a manner like it was telling me that it was already in use, when it wasn't even plugged in! I couldn't get much to work right so I rebooted in safe mode, ran a couple of scans, which found nothing, rebooted in normal mode and my aircard was working again. Yay.
It worked normal except for the Windows pop up box that says you are offline kept popping up, and I couldn't close it unless I connected to the net via my aircard. Now my AVG has been switched off and I can't get it to turn back on, and my surfing via aircard is noticably slower. And, my power icon in the tray has gone away.

I have a Toshiba Satellite P-105, 32 bit processor, Vista Home Premium, SP 1.
I also have A Squared, AdAware, AVG (free edition), Malware Bytes, Spybot, SuperAntiSpyware installed.

I use this laptop for work and now I'm afraid to put in passwords, account numbers, etc.

A:My AVG has been turned off and I can't turn it back on!

Just an update.
I downloaded + ran the Kaspersky scanner and it found nothing, but yet I've lost the power icon and the internet connection icons in the task tray.
It still get a black screen for a long time on start up from sleep mode.

I'm not sure if I'm infected, or have something going wrong.

Any thoughts? Ideas?

Hello, I recently got a Thinkpad P51(about a month ago). I was working on battery today and the laptop just turned off - no warning about low battery either. It won't turn on again. I tried the following- plugging in the AC power and use the power button to turn it on- Removing AC, battery and hold the power button for 30secs and plug them back in But the laptop won't turn back on. I don't see any lights(even the little red thinkpad LED doesn't blink) nor hear any beeps.  Can any one suggest a quick troubleshoot for this?  Thanks

My laptop  (Dell Inspiron 15 model 3531) turned off and will not turn back on. I've tried removing the battery and using the power cord, however, every time I plug the power cord in the light on it turns off. I've tried removing the battery and pressing the power button down for 30 seconds and then plugging the power cord back into it, with the battery in.....same, no beeping or anything. I don't know if it's under warranty as I got it from school and they are now closed (ITT TECH). I have an older inspiron, but this one had all of my programs from school. Thank you for your help.

Last night I decided to let my game idle while I went to bed. As the computer is in my room and I didn't want the screen light to keep me up I decided to turn down the brightness. So I went to the right side windows 8 menu clicked on settings and pressed brightness. Now I accidentally turned it down to zero and I let my mouse go.

So now my screen is black. This wouldn't be a problem if the brightness buttons work but they don't (didn't install the boot camp drivers)
Is there any way I can recover this? Or would I have to reinstall my pc?

I've already consulted Samsung about this issue, and they want me to Refresh (windows 8) my laptop. I have important programs and I DON'T WANT TO DO THAT.

Started about half an hour ago, I plugged my laptop into the wired connection because it was downloading 6 GB. Plugging in a cord activates Airplane mode. In theory, once out of Airplane Mode, WiFi will turn back on. NORMALLY IT DOES, BUT NOW IT DOESN'T. THIS IS REALLY PISSING ME OFF.

A:WiFi turned off and won't turn back on.

Is this a second computer with the same issue?

I would suggest contacting Microsoft as it seems to be a software issue and not hardware. Especially if you can turn on the wireless manually.

Good Morning everyone,

My husband I and a Cyberpower GX1107 I7 920, which we purchased in June 2009 (not even a year ago). He was using it this morning, just using firefox visiting a website he has gone to every day, when it suddenly shut down. We let it sit for about 10 minutes, and attempted to turn it back on, but nothing would happen.

We tested the electrical outlet, and its fine. We attempted to turn it on again, and the light on the front would come on for a second, but then go off, and the computer will not come on. It's like it gets power for a second, but then refuses to acknowledge anything.

Do we need a new power supply? What else could have gone wrong? I checked the warranty information, and parts are warrantied for a year, so it should not have died this early.

Any advice is greatly appreciated! If you need any other details, I'll try to provide them.

Thank you so much in advance.

Several weeks ago I noticed an alert on my computer that my antivirus (at the time it was Panda Security's free AV) was turned off. I tried turning it on through Windows' tool and it didn't work. When I tried opening Panda itself, it would take approximately 5 minutes for the window to open, then nothing inside it would be clickable. I assumed the issue was with Panda and uninstalled it, then got BitDefender's Total Security 2016 free trial. That seemed to work better, but then the next day I was again getting the message from Windows that my antivirus was turned off. This time I opened BitDefender to check its status, and it said my computer was protected. I tried telling BitDefender to turn on through Windows' Action Centre, and then my status on the BitDefender window changed, and said that real time protection is turned off. I tried turning it on several times in the BitDefender window as well as through the Action Centre to no avail. I downloaded and ran FRST, and following are the contents of the FRST.txt log. My Spectre 360 made a fizzling sound then turned off. There was a slight odor from the vent. It will not turn on. It's completely dead and even the charge light does not come on when plugged in. I did a search to trouble shoot the problem and it seems that this is a very common issue with this particular laptop. I'm disappointed that HP hasn't reached out to owners with this model to rectify the problem. I have been a very loyal HP customer for many years and spend more on their computers because I know they will last. My previous HP cost about $2300 ( it's still kicking) and this one was around $1000. I'm 8 months out of warranty and frustrated that I spent the extra money only to have a really big expensive paperweight. if anyone has any input or solutions I would really appreciate it.

I need some help, I think I turned my video drivers off and now I need some help getting them back on. A few weeks ago my graphics card failed and some dialogue box showed up and then the computer shut down. Since then I have replaced the card and solved another issue I was having. I can not get the computer to come back now, in normal start up or in any of the safe modes. When I start the computer now I get this:

POST beep
BIOS screen
Loading Operating system
Windows error recovery (with booting options)
The four little dots that come together to form the window with starting windows underneath it.
The screen then goes black I get my cursor arrow and it remains that way until I get pissed and shut it down.

How do I turn these back on and resume normal use of my computer? TIA!

Hi all,

Somehow in the past two days, my computer developed a Smitfraud infection (and possibly others). I am running Windows XP SP2 and normally run Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security suite.

Now, when the malware had been running, I got all kinds of pop-up windows, PC-cillin couldn't seem to do anything, Windows Update and the Task Manager were both turned off, etc.

I rebooted in Safe Mode with Networking, and was able to download SpyBot S&D, and remove a number of different problems, including Smitfraud and Virtumonde, both of which had several infected files, I think. I immunized against these problems, rebooted.

However, the problem didn't seem to be completely fixed, so I went back into Safe Mode, downloaded SmitFraudFix, and ran that, which found more infected files, including hosts. It was supposedly "clean" at this point.

I re-booted normally, and the computer was quite a bit slower. I thought SpyBot might be the problem, so I uninstalled it, since I still have Trend Micro PC-cillin on my system. When I did this, I immediately received a message from PC-cillin that Windows Update had been turned off again.

When I try to turn on Windows Update through the Security Center, it says Windows Update is off, but then won't let me turn it back on except through the Control Panel. When I go to the Control Panel, it says that Windows Update is ON. I have no idea how to fix this. I get periodic notices from PC-cillin that it is off, a... Read more

Like a fool I allowed a family member to use my PC against my better judgment this afternoon and now I'm regretting it as all hell has literally broken loose. Long story short I restarted my PC about an hour ago and when it loaded back into Windows (7 ultimate edition x64) it was instantly clear there was a problem. I won't go through all the details but I noticed Webroot wasn't running anymore and Windows was prompting me to turn it back on. When I went to do so instead of Webroot running I was presented with the Webroot installation window instead. I entered my key (Webroot Secure Anywhere) and I got the following message - "Webroot could not be installed. This could potentially be caused by malware on the computer. Would you like to try installing with a randomized filename?" The latter option doesn't work and as a result I cannot get Webroot running again. I've scanned the PC using Emsisoft Anti-malware which found three suspicious items and deleted them. All subsequent scans come back clean but Webroot still won't start/install.Any idea what I can try next?

A:Webroot turned off, cannot turn back on or install?!?

Some further "symptoms" I've come across -

Windows Experience Index has reset itself, i.e there's no score.

My network shares have been reset.

File types are no longer associated.

The hibernation file is back (I'd previously turned it off as I've got an SSD and wanted to save space)

I'm sure there's more I'm yet to spot.

This is probably my own fault due to my obsessive tinkering. Im always playing with things I shouldn't (On computers that is). The other day I downloaded Auslogics Speed Boost & I started playing with the system tweaks, I ended up getting a horrible blocky background underneath all of my desktop Icons behind the item description (The writing). Before the item decription blended in nicely with my background picture. So rather than re-trace my steps logically I went into the Display propertites under the appearence tab then advance & started changing things in there, why I dont know, I convinced myself I knew what I was doing when in actual fact I was clueless. Its taken me ages to get everything back to how it was all but this one thing. My folders are absolutely huge, the view is thumbnails. Before I messed it up they were I guess the standard windows size, I could see the pictures that were within the folder. Now the picture sare there but they are all distorted through being so big. I've looked everywhere I know to change them back.
Please can someone tell me where to change the size of your folders ? Much appreciated.

A:My folders have all turned huge!(Can som1 help me turn them back pls?)

Hello Trent5281

So this is just a problem with folders with "thumbnails" ? All you r other folders are OK?

Try disabling and then re-enabling thumbnails.
1. Open Windows Explorer.

2. Click Tools/Folder Options/View.

3. Under Files and Folders, click the checkbox that says "Do not cache thumbnails."

4. Apply/OK

I`m not sure if you need to reboot or not
Then go back and re-enable again

try this

Enable or Disable Thumbnails

Line 277 left hand side

You would have to click "Disable" and then later run "Enable"

I think it's due to the fact that I am not able to connect to any Wi-Fi spots (which I assume is because of safe mode which I can't turn off for some reason) And that brings me to my next point, of I can't connect to Wi-Fi die to safe mode. I have tried to turn off safe mode in the settings but when I press the button for it to turn off it slides back over to the on side. Please let me know if you have any other solutions that I have not tried yet, Thanks !

Occassionally, when trying to install an application from a CDROM, I get the following message: "The Win16 Subsystem was unable to enter Protected Mode, DOSX.EXE must be in your AUTOEXEC.NT and present in your PATH." I'm running Windows XP Professional. Does anyone know how to fix this?

A:Unable to enter Protected Mode

Have a look at these two M$KB articles, the first, although for Win2K and NT is still relevant

M$KB 222975

M$KB 314106

I'm having an issue with my PS4 for a little bit now. Each time I leave it on to charge and turn off the tv, a few minutes later I turn back on the tv and don't see the screen anymore and the PS4 is on rest mode with the orange light on. I can't turn it back on with the controller and can't turn it off. I have to disconnect the power from the outlet and turn back on the power. Of course afterwards I get the message that it was turned off properly and the system has to check for errors before it's back on. Does anybody what is going on? I never had this issue before.

i need some help please the internet protected mode that shows on the bottom right side of a web page show's that it is off but the check marks are in place in the box's that you turn it on with and i have checked all the settings that i know to check to have it set to ON but it shows off. i have vista 64 bit on a HP desk top e9120y with IE8.

A:internet protected mode

Hello Jerry,

In Internet Options under the Security tab, click on each zone icon at the top to double check that the Protected Mode option is checked in each zone. Be sure to close and reopen all instances of IE8 to apply the changes afterwards. You may not have it checked in one of them, or did not open and close IE8 afterwards before.

Hope this helps,

Using Vista home premium and had to place 4 links into the trusted sites in security to get vista to accept activeX so i can get to play at game site i like and it worked.

But clicked the protected mode back on, and getting a warning its still off, is there a problem with having links in trusted sites and having the protected mode running? Or did i miss something??

What does the internet Protected mode do and shouldn t it be on if possible? - thanks . . .

A:Internet Protected Mode

From the Microsoft website: "In Protected Mode, Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista cannot modify user or system files and settings without user consent. Protected Mode requires the user to confirm any activity that tries to put something on your machine or start another program."

The first thought that comes to mind is the browser reset function that restores IE7 back to facorty defauts. This tends to clear up alot of thoses things like this that cause strange problems. You can find the Reset in the Internet Options under the Advanced tab.

Hi i have been experiencing this problem since i first built my PC. It seems to wake up from sleep at random times in the nite(very disturbing). I have already turned off all the devices that wake it up that are not USb interface and I have no idea how to proceed to trouble shoot this issue, please help if you can.
Thank you,
EDIT: It goes back to sleep on its own(sometimes)

A:Computer will offten turn back on when in sleep mode

have you turned off the waking from lan of your network card? also, there are some power management settings in bios which deal with auto waking up from sleep. see if this is the case, as windows settings might be over-ridden by bios.

Seeking a solution to the problem with this:
DVD drive is powered off, Lenovo X230, Windows 8.1 64 bit
and found that in the safe mode (minimal), the problem does not exist.
For trouble I decided to try other options of safe boot to have further information.
After restarting in safe mode "?ctive difrectory repair"', I can not turn back to Normal Startup.
I see only pure blue screen with only one button with restart and shut down, there no any key on the keyboard who work, left click not working too. And I can not access to msconfig and startup manager to change this setting.

But I have a bootable disk and I can edit registry but I do not know what do I have to do to get back Normal startup.
Please, help me! Thank you all in advance!
Excuse me for my english.

A:After Safe mode I can not turn back Normal Startup

With your boot disk you get it to boot normally ?

Safe Mode - Start Windows 8 in

If so see picture:

Post back with results please.

Hi everyone,
I'm a new member here and this is my first post, so please be gentle. I've been having an issue with my Chromebook recently. I'm unable to sign on to any Wi-fi network because the button on the bottom right-hand side just defaults to it being off. Specifically, it's similar to this:

I tried powering it on and off and eventually did a full reset and a Powerwash, so now everything is wiped off of the hard drive (which is OK since I backed up almost everything on Google Drive anyway). The problem still persists, regardless. Any ideas?

I'm hesitant to purchase a USB-Ethernet router since I'm not sure it would work and if the issue is the w-fi card, I'm hesitant to open it up and try to fix it as I'm not inclined towards that sort of thing and am worried that I'd mess it up.

Dropping it off at Best Buy or some place like that and telling them to try to fix it is an option, but I'm afraid they'd charge too much.

I'm looking for an easy fix since I only paid $125 for it last year via Amazon. Unfortunately, the warranty expired. Is it salvageable? The Chromebook is completely unusable at the moment.

Thanks in advance!

Hi. I am using windows Vista. At the bottom of the screen when I am in explorer an using the internet - it says Protected Mode: Off. It used to day 'On'. I am worried why it has changed. How can I switch it back on again - also what does it mean? what is it protecting me from. I have installed some plug-ins - maybe this is why?

Thank you

A:Internet Protected mode has changed by itself!

Go to Tools / Internet Options , Security Tab.

Click on each icon, then for each icon's page, checkmark Enable Protected Mode ....
It doesn't do any harm to enable protected mode for all types of sites.

IE classifies web sites you go to, and detects whether they are local on your hard drive, on your intranet etc. and turns Protected Mode on or off accordingly. After setting the checkmark as per above, it will always be on.
