Yoga 530-14IKB Yoga Mode Control has very high cpu and battery usage

Q: Yoga 530-14IKB Yoga Mode Control has very high cpu and battery usage

I've recently (13th of April) bought new Yoga 530-14IKB. It has adequate CPU i3-8130U, which is faster than i5-6200U in my sister's Acer laptop, but I anyway don't play any games. Despite that, its battery life isn't good. It works about 3-3,5 hours in Chrome. In task manager I've noticed that Yoga Mode Control is constantly using 15-30% CPU and its battery usage is described as very high. After disabling it, I can't switch to the tablet mode and keyboard and touchpad don't turn off. Is there somebody who has Yoga laptop and experience similar problem?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello All, I have an issue with my YOGA 700 laptop when logged in multiple accounts simultaneously. Whenever an account is left logged on and the user is switched as opposed to logging off, the cpu usage ramps up very high with several RUNDLL32 processes being the culprit. I have checked the RUNDLL32 processes with Process Explorer and the command line are as follows:C:\Windows\system32\rundll32.exe C:\ProgramData\LenovoTransition\Server\x64\EnableAutoRotation.dll,RunCustomMonitor The directory is as follows: C:\ProgramData\LenovoTransition\Server\x64\ The only solution I have found is restarting the laptop. The problems comes back when again more than one user is logged in. Also, the rundll32 processes only run high cpu on one account at a time and there doesn't seem to be a preference for a specific account, all of them are plagued one at a time with the problem. Disabling the Yoga Mode Control service is a fix but that breaks the mode control which is essential in this laptop. I have tried installing all the available software on the Software page foor the YOGA 700. The rundll32 processes drain the battery very fast and I can't always log off other users when they have apps open!  I have posted a screenshot of process explorer showing 2 rundll32.exe processes using 25% cpu usage each. However, sometimes up to 4 rundll32.exe processes open up and they use combined 100% cpu usage, which makes the laptop run very hot and slow. In t... Read more

Hey. I bought my Yoga 520-14IKB (Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM, 256gb NVMe SSD, GeForce 940MX) 2 month ago, had no problems, till last week. Now sometimes i experience such a strange behaviour. Mainly i work on my laptop in normal mode, and sometimes, during such work, it can false trigger a tablet mode for a few (2-3) seconds (notification appers), which causes the keyboard to switch off for this time, despite the fact, that it still stands as a normal laptop, not even close to position, which triggers the yoga mode. How can i fix this? System is Windows 10 April 2018 Update, have all the latest drivers and latest version of BIOS.

HiWhen a second user is logged on to my yoga 900 the cpu goes from 2-3% to about 30% and stays there. The fan spins up and makes more noise than acceptable. After disabling the service yoga mode control it does not happen anymore but it's a  pity to have to do without it. I have everything updated (windows 10 and bios) including the latest version of yoga mode control I can find: version 1.0.0.9 Is there a fix to this?

I received my Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Yoga 2gen (i7, OLED). Unfortunately the CPU usage is constantly around 30% (reaching up to 100%), the fan is on all the time and the battery is empty in 2 hours. The main reasons for the high CPU usage are the following three programmes:- Sophos web intelligence (which I have to have installed according to my employer)- WMI provider host (I tried deinstalling it, but then I can no longer access the network drives)- Synaptics TouchPad 64-bit EnhancementsAny ideas what I could do to solve the issue? Thanks!

I have always been a fan of Lenovo but things like this will make me think twice about purchasing their laptops again. I have the YOGA 720 13. The Lenovo Yoga mode control service runs in the background and uses an inordinate amount of CPU resources. On the task manager I can see it uses on average 8-10% of CPU resources continuously. Needless to say this will reduce your battery runtime considerably. I waited to see if Lenovo would fix this issue as it has been mentioned in the forums many times previously but it seems they either dont care or are still somehow unaware of this ridiculously bad software engineering problem. This problem seems to be not just on my model but on several other Yoga models. Considering that battery time is one of the most important considerations in a laptop I wish they would fix this. In any case things like this will impact my next purchasing decision. My solution in the end was to disable the service altogether in the Services tab. Its a pity that a nice piece of hardware is being limited by sloppily coded software. Disabling the YMC service causes your keyboard to be responsive when using the laptop in presentation or tent mode which is annoying as well but at least I get some decent battery time (for Windows...). FYI. If you want much better battery runtime forget windows and try Ubuntu linux 18.10, I often get about 30% more battery when doing casual browsing/document editing.

Like stated in the description. the Lenovo Yoga Control Service require 3% out of the CPU, all the time. and the only thing the service does is checking the orientation of the screen, and disable keyboard and mouse when flipped. This is absurd, especially since it drains battery constantly. I hope that this will be fixed eventually, until that time, I will turn the service off and use the computer like a regular laptop.

Hi, It's my second day with this machine, Lenovo just fixed the fan issue luckily the BIOS released the within a day I purchased the laptop (lucky me). Another minor quirk I am noticing, though.  When on battery, the remaining time in XXHrs XXMins keeps fluctuating.  At a point when the battery is more than 80%, it can show 3hrs 38mins, and within a few min, it can jump to 6hrs 46mins and again drop down to 2hrs 20mins all within a matter of minutes. It looks more like a dynamic value that keeps changing based on the load at that instant.  Anyone else noticed this issue?  Or is there a setting I need to tweak?

Hi everyone. I can see that people with other similar style Lenovo laptops (Yoga 900) complain about the same issue so was wondering if there is a solution or an optimized version of this software. I did an update of the BIOS and the Power Management driver and still a constant power usage.  Once the laptop is flipped the YMC detects it and turns off the keyboard functionality to prevent accidental presses and that is pretty much all until it flipped back and enabled. And all of this requires a constant high CPU usage? Any help would be highly appreciated. I also tried rolling back to older drivers without luck in decreasing this CPU hog usage. To put such load on a i5 6th gen CPU really implies an inferior service integration....

Hi, my ~2 year old battery's full capacity in a Lenovo Yoga 510-14IKB has been dropped from 52500mWh to below 22000mWh by the time I noticed it yesterday. In less than 24 hours since I noticed this it lost another ~2%! Other than the ridiculous capacity it works fine, I can't observe rapid discharge, sudden drops, or insufficient recharge. That's why it wasn't obvious to notice this. What can I do? In BIOS, or anywhere else? I couldn't find any process for e.g. calibration in Lenovo Vantage (like it was written in previous posts related to its predecessor the Onekey Optimizer). So I haven't used my laptop for a week or so, and when I started it up a few days ago, the battery life turned from a solid 7+ hours to a mere 4 hours! I actually timed how long it took before the battery went down by 1% before this happened, so I did the same test after. When I tested it, for the first time, the battery went down 1% after 270 seconds(almost 5 minutes). Now it seems to lose the same amount of battery in a weak 140 seconds(just a little bit more than 2 minutes!). Can someone please help me find the cause and if I can fix it? I loved this laptop because of its excellent battery life.

Hello. I have purchased the Lenovo Yoga 170-14IKB with 1080p touchscreen, 8gb RAM and i5-7200U.Since it is a bit older, and I realized I need more RAM for my school projects and assignments, I decided to go for a "Crucial SO-DIMM 16GB DDR4 SDRAM 2400MHz CL17 Dual Ranked" memory, since on the Crucial's website it was stated that this Yoga supports that RAM. So I clicked purchace, got the RAM, upgraded, and suddenly my Yoga is warm when in sleep. It also draws so much power in sleep in Windows 10, that it discharges in a few hours when still in sleep. Before the upgrade, the Yoga lasted a week or two in sleep mode. Now, only a few hours. Is there any way to solve this issue? I was considering a BIOS upgrade might help, but I'm running the lates bios 2XCN38WW (V2.12).Are you aware of this issue? Is anyone else having this issue? Can I provide you with any more information to help me solve this problem? I need my Yoga's battery life as I spend a lot of time in school during the day. Also, I'm running Window 10 x64 Pro - build 17134. Thank you in advance!

Hi all,I bought the laptop mentioned in the subject of this post in August 2019... Everything's good on the first months, battery was around 5 to 6 hours (I never expected to have 10 hours).Suddenly, since last month it get worse. Now it last less than 2 hours, after a full charge, with the screen brightness at 50%, almost no load on CPU, Battery saver on. What's wrong? Sounds weird that something happend to the cells after only 2 months of use... I attach the battery report from Windows so you can get better what I mean (battery life estimates at the end of the page). Just to be clear, I already tried to "calibrate" the battery (full discharge on battery, and full recharge while powered off) and the problems is still there, maybe worse than before. Help me out please, is still an awesome laptop, but it's useless with 2 hours battery...

The lenovo pen is working fine on this section of screen. Facing same issue in tablet mode also. I don't think this is software issue, maybe the connection at the  hinge got screwed up. The laptop is still under warranty. All the Drivers are up to date. Can I get a replacement if I go to service center or is this a software issue which can be solved ?

Hi there, Duduamar ?

Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

Do an idle test
Click start type msconfig -> start up -> disable all reboot
You will have disabled all programs that start up with your pc open task manager and see if the cpu speed has dropped

If it has open msconfig again and turn on your firewall and av then reboot check turn on a few more check etc etc
Be warned that after the first disable all and reboot you will have disabled your firewall and av so don?t download or goto unknown web pages but it should be ok for a 2 min test

Update us how it goes.

Hey, I'm experiencing pretty high CPU usage when using Skype or Google hangouts (20-40%). When using my webcam, my laptop gets extremely hot. Also, my "system and compressed memory" uses 10-20% at the same time. As the title suggests, the CPU usage of this laptop goes very high when it is plugged in. This results in high CPU temperatures and surface temperatuers and the fan becoming very noisy, despite no programmes being open in windows. It is extremely annoying and simply burning out the laptop and it's power supply. I could not find a solution. I have a suspicion that due to charging, laptop creates heat in some components (VRM etc), this is magnified by Rapid Charging, therefore the fans must run during charging to dissipate heat.I suspect the fans' running voltage is linked to the CPU load, so the only way for the fans to run faster to dissipate charging heat is by running the CPU at higher voltage/frequency, which in turn creates even more heat. Perhaps a simple fix would be to give an option to turn off Rapid Charging, as to reduce heat, in Lenovo Vantage. The CPU management is terrible on this laptop. I don't know if it is Intel's DPTF drivers or Lenovo's firmware, but the battery would die very quickly. I disabled Turbo Boost on battery mode and the battery life almost doubled.  I am quite dissapointed with many aspects of this laptop. There has been no update in a long time and I think there are quite a few things to fix.  Don't just fix this in the Yoga 930. You need to look after your current customers as well. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS AND WORK ON A FIX. This laptop is so close to perfect... Thank you.

Hello my fellow ThinkPad friends, I know that there are already a couple of threads out there concerning high battery drain when the device is completely shut down, but none for the X380 Yoga yet. In some cases (E-Series ThinkPads), a BIOS-Update was released to solve the problem. I would kindly like to ask the Lenovo team to try and figure out whether the same can be accomplished for the X380 Yoga.  When my device is shut down, it usually drains 10-15% a day, which cannot be a regular thing. Of course, I have tried all the usual stuff: - Windows Quick Start is off - USB-power when off is off- Wake-On-LAN or USB-C is off- BIOS updated to R0SET29W 1.13 If you have any other ideas, feel free to post them. Otherwise, I would really appreciate for a BIOS update that might adress the issue. It is kind of annoying charging your device for the weekend knowing that by the next day, you will already have lost 1 to 2 hours of runtime. Best wishes,Manuel

Hi,

It appears based on the below post that Lenovo fixed this problem on X380 Yoga.  Can this be released for X1 Yoga 3rd generation?

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X380-Yoga-High-battery-drain-when-off-again/t...

I have already done the below

- Windows Quick Start is off
- USB-power when off is off
- Wake-On-LAN or USB-C is off
- BIOS updated to N25ET35W 1.21
- I have uploaded BIOS settings to default
- Disabled thunderbolt
- run battery guage reset twice

Battery drain is not as bad as the other person on the X380 but I still lose after making all the above changes 1-3% overnight.  Despite what support says I do not believe that this should be considered normal.  This has never happened on any of my other thinkpads except for my TP25 which was fixed after disabling fast start up.

My Lenovo YOGA 510-14AST (purchased a few weeks ago in August 2018, runs on Win 10) gives out very loud fan noise for 5-10 secs once initiating the smallest task (e.g. opening a pdf. or a new tab in Chrome). This problem happens more often when the laptop is charged. Probably caused by high CPU usage, which during standard browsing, sometimes rockets up to 85%. Strangely, when in task manager I add up the running programmes, it does not give me the indicated 85%, but usually around 40%. I tried various "small fixes" from the forum/internet, like lowering max processor state, getting rid of background apps. and installing all the (I think) Win 10 updates. None of it seems to help. Also, the battery lasts ( standard usage - browsing and win office) shorter than advertised. So, I am wondering if these are common problems of this seria or a hardware/ other problems, and if there are any solutions on how to solve the fan noise.  I am not so much of a tech-savvy, and had a budged for a cheap laptop only, so would be grateful for any help or advice.

This machine was manufactured on the 27th of November, 2017. So..I'm in a conundrum where I'm going to send off my Yoga 920 to be fixed again or have components potentially replaced. It takes roughly 2hrs to charge from 0% to 100%. Unsure whether downscaling from 4K to FHD makes a difference. The battery once the charger has been removed is set to Battery Saver mode using 10% Screen Brightness lasts about 2 hours or less usage watching streaming video, ms office applications, file managments etc.Using 100% Brightness non-battery saver mode which is less then optimal in my room + lighting condition = 1 hour tops I think roughly.Lenovo Vantage previously reported my Battery only capable of storing roughly 40-50% of it's given capacity (Yellow Font "Fair").  Just gonna also ask if anyone has had an average of 50C+ (hits 60-80C) thermals i7 8550u, I would like to have lower operating temperatures since my first/last geniune laptop which was a Z460 and it didn't have too great of a battery life either. I have tried unvolting in XTU and that was no bueno too. Edited*Kind upset with the battery life as you could tell. I was optimistic in my expectations that this machine may survive me 2-3 years with ongoing usage however  I'd rather not make this a Fake Desktop and charge it constantly. Kinda upset with a 1300+GBP investment. Kingsley.

I'm having an issure with a significant battery drain when the notebook is shut down. In couple of days being switched off and not in use, battery loses around 10-15% or even more. I have tried to disable always on USB in the bios as well as the quick start of Windows 10. It didn't help. I'm running the latest insider version of Windows 10 (soon to be the Anniversary Release) on  a Yoga 900. The "Lenovo Yoga  Mode Control" ((ymc.exe) has consistently crashed every day for the last few months. Crash reports are logged. Are there any plans to fix this issue any time soon?

What version of YMC are you using?

A new version (1.0.0.9) was posted just a few days ago: Lenovo Yoga Mode Control for Windows 10 (64-bit). Perhaps it addresses the issue with the Anniversary Release.

Hi, I'm having issues with my Thinkpad L380 Yoga. The battery loses approx. 8% overnight, when its in hibernate mode.Any suggestions how to solve this? Is this a software error or hardware? I already turned off all wake timers, windows fast startup, powered USB-port when off, wake on lan etc.Updated all drivers, tried previous BIOS v.1.18. Also turned off the chariging treshold in Lenovo Vantage, as I read it could cause the problem. Cheers,Jannik

I saw this option when i first started my laptop and now I dont.  I am looking for the battery charging settings for the maximum life span mode on the Yoga 910, Windows 10 system.   I feel like it disappeared after some updates but I'm now entirely sure.  Where can I find this?  Thank you, Dan

Hi. I've updated all the drivers, per technical support's advice. I'm losing 1-5% per day when shut down and 5-10% per day in sleep mode on my new Yoga 920. Is anyone else having this problem? Do tech support read these forums?

Hi amote,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Battery draiining reports are also visible on other OEM forums as well and most likely related to similar features offered by Windows 10. Such also applies to different model of different macnufacturers as well.

Disabling fast start as discussed here would be a good step to try first.

Our forums are peer to peer community discussion group but Tech support (although maybe limited to their own scope of support) also utilizes the discussions we have for investigation of issues.

Update us how things go.

Regards

Hi, for the X1E, before replacing compoents, it is suggested on the manual that we need to go to the BIOS to disable the battery first. How about the 4K version of Yoga 730 15" and Yoga C930?

Hi, I am looking for a laptop with a 4K screen. According to the specs, the X1 Carbon Gen 7 and X1 Yoga Gen 4 will have 51W battery. Does that mean even they will get the latest cpu (which some said there is not much different), they will have shorter battery life than the current Yoga C930 which has 60W battery? https://www.ultrabookreview.com/24380-2019-lenovo-thinkpads/https://www.ultrabookreview.com/24458-lenovo-yoga-c930-review/
