Windows Explorer Runtime Error (not related to Internet Explorer)

Q: Windows Explorer Runtime Error (not related to Internet Explorer)

Dear Tech guys,
I badly need your support. Day before yesterday (01-Aug-06) night I upgraded the yahoo toolbar and used their norton anti spy to scan. Then I shut down the system and started to work the next day. Every thing is perfectly ok except for one thing. In Windows Explorer, on any folder or drive if I double click or open I get a crash. If I do explore then there is no problem.

Below is the dialog that comes whenever we double click or open (for eg: on C:\ or any folder in the left side pane of the windows explorer. If I just keep expanding the + of the tree no problem, only on clicking the item to open the following error occurs.)

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

program: C:\Windows\Explorer.exe

This Application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.

I am running on Windows XP SP 2. I dont have google toolbar. I have yahoo tool bar installed. I have tried uninstalling it and installing it again and other combinations as well.

I have also tried sfc /scannow as well. It did not work.

It doesnt look like any adware or spyware (yahoo's norton spyware had done a complete run and no problems in the system as reported by them).

What should I do now to get back to normal operation of windows explorer.

Thanks and Regards,
Naga Kumar S

Preferred Solution: Windows Explorer Runtime Error (not related to Internet Explorer)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Windows Explorer Runtime Error (not related to Internet Explorer)

I would un-install the Yahoo Toolbar and then put Google Toolbar in, Then I would try to download .NET framework 2.0

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...6b-356b-4a2c-857c-e62f50ae9a55&displaylang=en

and install it. If it tells you that you already have it re-install it anyway.

Welcome to TSG!

There is very little to clean up in your log, but we will get to that.

The first thing I'd like you to try is disabling the Google Toolbar.
That might stop the error for you.

Let me know how that goes.

Hey guys,

I'm having some issues with my computer where whenever it connects to the internet, the browser or application will immediately crash. This happens on Internet Explorer, Firefox, and even Steam. I have also been having a start up warning about a win32.brontok trojan that I can't seem to get rid of.

I have a Mac Pro that dual boots to PC, so I only use it for games and PC-only programs. I am using AVG antivirus. Hope this helps, cause I need it.

HI, not sure if i'm posting in right place, so apologies if i'm not.
My problem is this:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error
Program:C:\programfiles\InternetExplorer\explore.exe

-pure virtual function call

OK... this error msg appeared a coupla days ago, I googled it and read some info on it, which seemed pretty complicated and every one I read seemed to give different reasons and solutions for this problem.... therefore I wanted to ask you guys!
The only problem i've noticed since getting this msg is that it takes about three or four attempts to get IE to open (keep getting error msg - Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close... blah blah blah!), but once i get the browser fully loaded it seems to be ok.
I read up a bit on the microsoft website which suggested updating security (which I always do), but it also offered a hotfix whatever this is, I dont even think its fully developed yet.

-I should probably mention that i'm running windows XP home edition, and IE 6. I upgraded to IE 7 ages ago, but it wasn't functioning particularly well, so I uninstalled and reverted back to IE 6 which was running OK at that time.

Also spybot S&D hasn't been working for some time... whether this is related to my current problem I don't know, when it gets 3quarters through scan, my computer restarts itself. I uninstalled and re-installed the latest version but that just does the same thing. So I installed AVG... Read more

Hi, I hope someone can help me.

I have a pc running Windows 7 64bit and for a week or two I have been having problems openeing Windows Explorer to view files etc. The first time I tried to open it, it would shutdown saying "Windows Explorer ash stopped working", but then when I tried again it worked. Today when I try to open it, I get an error saying "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library. This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the applications support team for more information"

It comes up with this and then shuts explorer down, and everytime I do this I get the same. I have tried to access it through all the user accounts and get the same thing each time.

I have done a virus/malware check (I used Malwarebytes, AVG, and AdAware) and everything seems ok there, and I did a sfc/scannow (?) and that said everything was ok. Can anyone suggest what is causing this and what i can do to get it fixed?

Many thanks for any help...

Hello,
I am having a problem with Windows Explorer in Win XP SP2. When I try to copy files, or select files and right click on them, I get a Runtime error message:
"runtime error! Program C:\windows\explorer.exe." Somewhere I found the suggestion to check the Event Viewer. At the time of the runtime error, source=winlogon.
Winlogon is in the C:\windows\system32 and c:\windows\system32\dllcache folders only, and with the name winlogon.exe. It is using 472kb of memory, according to the task manager.
I recently found a trojan (unnamed by Norton) and removed. I rescanned with Norton and Trojan Hunter and found nothing. Spysweeper found a few low risk type spyware (according to them).

For a few days, I am unable to open up Windows Explorer in Win7 64-bit. I get a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library error, "This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way." Eeks!

I've done some research and have found suggestions to uninstall and then install the library. However, I didn't find it unambiguous - there were several possible library files that I could uninstall.

So I thought I'd try upgrading to Windows 10 tonight and hopefully the library would be intact. Just before doing this, I deleted a large desktop folder. I did do a backup and am, as I write, restoring that folder - phew! But I could not use the Recycle Bin to more easily undo my deletion.

So ... any thoughts about whether I should resolve this problem (and how) before upgrading? I'd like my recycle bin to be intact even after the upgrade but am guessing it won't be. Thanks!

I found the solution from someone and i would like to share it with everyone.....download the program bho captor...it allows you to deactivate certain controls. the control i deactivated was one for spybot search and destroy. try and deactivate more than one if you don't have success after the first attempt but just remember if you need to restore that control at a later date you will need that programs original installer.

A:Solution To: Runtime Error Progam: C:\windows\explorer.exe

To me it would make much more sense to uninstall the problem program than just disabling (and possibly crippling) part of that program. This is more of a band-aid fix than actual solution.

I have searched this forum and could not find the answer. Please help.

When I search using Windows Explorer, after approx. 30 seconds, I get the following error: "This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way."

Would anyone know why I am getting this error and where would be a good place to start to correct it?

I did a clean boot even excluding windows programs and the problem was still there. I have installed all the latest Windows 7 updates. I also tried sfc /scannow and I turned off MS security software and firewall all to no avail.

Is there anything else I can try? Would there be some type of log file somewhere that would tell me what is causing the problem?

Thanks in advance for any help,
yeto

I have been given the incorrect information on this forum and noticed that I have a file on my hard drive that is locked.

The person advised me to go to

Download Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86) from Official Microsoft Download Center

I have done this and it has come up with various screens that I am not familiar with.

It looks like it as uploaded to my USB External Hard Disk Drive.

Can some one please advise me the correct advice?

All that happened is that I got an error and the Windows Explorer crashed and then refreshed.

The subject message pops up any time I attempt to open my IE8 browser using Windows XP and set to my home page "ATT.Yahoo". When I click "OK" in the message, IE closes and tries to recover, but with the same results each time. I know
there is a method to reset IE9, but can't tell if it also pertains to IE8 since it can't be opened.

After clicking okay to this error explorer gets restarted. After pouring over the internet looking for a solution I am still baffled as to the cause, I don't think I have installed anything recently that could be the cause...
I was getting the message as above but "C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe" upon start-up but disabling a number of nvidia things stopped this. Numerous checks with assorted anti-spyware and anti-virus software leave me to believe it's not a virus/malware issue but I could be wrong.
Anyway, here is a HijackThis log I took:

I get this message everytime I open Windows Explorer:

"This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support."

I can somewhat navigate Windows Explorer but it hangs when trying to open C:.

I also get this error sometimes when right-clicking to open the drop down menu.

Closing the error window reloads the desktop.

Chkdsk scan was clean; SFC returned no errors; message also occurs in Safe Mode; System Restore had no effect.

The issue presented around the time that a phishing email was opened in Outlook. I don't know if its related. I did several different AV scans but found nothing but free range malware, PUPs.

A Mcafee QuickClean was also run the day before. Mcafee has been completely removed from this system.

In Event Viewer, it shows an APPCRASH, faulting explorer.EXE and C:\Windows\system32\msvcrt.dll.

I'm stuck at this point. I've tried many solutions that I've found online but none have worked. I haven't figured out the source of this issue either.

I can provide any logs or scans as needed.

Thanks

Hello all,
I have an odd problem that maybe one of you people can help out. When i right click on a .zip file, or a folder either in windows explorer, or on my desktop i receive a Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error! Program C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.exe Abnormal program termination. When i hit the OK button, Explorer.exe restarts and my desktop refreshes. If i highlite a folder and Ctrl + C i get the error as well.

No errors show up in the event viewer, and everything else seems to operate fine. I reinstalled SP2 and the issues still exist.

Windows XP Pro SP2
All updates and patches installed

Any info you could provide would be a great help.

Thanks,
Tony

A:Runtime Error In Explorer.exe

I believe this can be caused by a virus. Make sure you have an updated antivirus and run it. If your virus program is expired, download AVG free and uninstall the old one first, making sure to get all parts of it, such as updaters, then install and update AVG and run it.

Hi.. I don't know if this is the right section, please correct me if it's wrong. Here is the problem:

My Internet Explorer 7 gives the error: "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". I cannot complete the troubleshooting. It states that there might be a problem with my firewall settings. But my Firefox works perfectly on this computer. I have completed all the steps given in this link. However, it didn't work. I cannot run MSN right now because of this. And this is not a problem that developed recently, on this computer I have never managed to run Internet Explorer.

And another point to mention: Whenever I try to visit a site via IE7, before giving "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" error, on the status-bar I see a warning for a second such that a "dns error" or something.

I have also searched this forum for this, I have found some posts consisting HJT logs but could not reached a solution for my problem. Could you please help? Thank you.
