I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system
It's worked out well for many of us in the past.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)
Hello everyone, Specs: HP Probook 4540sWindows 7 Professional 64 bit8 gig ramIntel core i-5 3320Intel HD 4000 GraphicsAMD Radeon HD 7000 Switchable Graphics I have a serious problem with my HP Probook 4540s and I really need help. I am somewhat tech savvy but this one has me floored. So my brother recently installed a game on my computer and it completely crashed my system. Apparently I didn't install some important updates on my computer and the new graphics updates corrupted my system and I have received several blue screens before my system crashed completely. I reinstalled windows (fresh formatted copy), installed all upgrades, but as soon as I install Catalyst Control Center, my system crashes again. I installed the base graphics drivers for my Intel HD 4000, but Catalyst Control Center will crash my system. This is a switchable graphics system. Am I missing something here? I did a memory check, I did a full system diagnostic, and nothing. Please help. Thank you.Read other answers
I am currently using Win 10 Enterprise 64-bit. I tried installing the newest drivers for both Intel HD Graphics 4600 and AMD Radeon HD8750M. Then I made profiles for the games in the Settings and set them to High Performance, in order to use the AMD card. Then I ran the AMD System Monitor to see if it is working but it wasn't. After that I read a post in the forums that I should install the drivers from the HP site. I deleted AMD drivers completely. Installed the drivers for AMD and Intel from the HP driver site. I also updated the BIOS. Then I changed the settings for the games to High Performance, ran my game and my AMD System Monitor and it was not working. I am so annoyed of this Intel graphics card that I want to disable it but there is no such option in the BIOS... So, HP Support Team, how can I use the GPU that I want?Read other answers
I have a laptop, HP4540s, which I use to capture video from a USB external capture card. It works fine, but I noticed that the laptop seemed to be using the Intel graphics all the time. On reading, it seems the default is not based on video processing, but that the laptop decides to use the ATI Graphics when 3D Video is being watched. I dont' do 3D, but wanted to get the value of the high performance graphics, after all that is why I bought this laptop. So I set the Switchable Graphics to use the High Performance by adding the Capture application in to Catalyst Control Center and setting it to High Performance. I saw no change in preformance, and the Laptop CPU Occupancy remained just as high as when using the built in Intel Graphics. I had one occurance of a blue screen after a few hours running on the High Performance setting, and so have gone back to the default, and have lost my comfort in this so called High Performance setting. I don't know if it is even doing anything, and if so, if it is working correctly, due to the blue screen. (It was obviously rare, but I can't afford it to ever happen). I am happy to buy a new laptop, but even new ones are like this, so have a level of concern about this facility, and don't know what to do, to achieve the best performance with the best stability. Hi, my laptop is overheating and wasting power because it is always running my ATI Radeon mobility graphics card. I have switchable graphics, and I want the computer to ALWAYS start up using Intel HD graphics.
I cannot find ANY settings to make Intel HD the default graphics card.
I have tried uninstalling ATI radeon graphics card. It always reinstalls AND SWITCHES to it on startup.
How can I make Intel HD the primary graphics card(PREFERRED), or completely remove ATI radeon so it never reinstalls the drivers after I have uninstalled it?
There would be an option in your BIOS to disable/enable onboard graphic chip. Also look for something along the lines 'Init Display first' (though these differ bios to bios) and select 'Onboard' or similar equivalent option.
You can also disable your radeon card through Device manager. Open Start menu, type 'Device Manager' and select it from the list displayed. Look for the card>right click>disable.
If unsure, post a screenshot and we'll work you out through the steps.
I have big trouble with my two units of Dell Precision 7510. I want to disable "Switchable graphics", because some OS do not support two graphics simultaneously. So, I have unchecked "Switchable graphics" in the BIOS settings, restarted and... display is gone. Notebook is working (system is booting in the background), display is back lighted, but nothing appears on the display. I have checked BIOS 1.10 and 1.20 on two units with identical configuration. I have been checking many times with different BIOS configurations. Always disabling "Switchable gprahics" makes system unusable.
In fact, I have successfully booted up one or two times with "Switchable graphics" BIOS option disabled. In that case the Intel P530 graphic card was disabled totally and AMD FirePro was running perfectly all uptime. Unfortunately, it was one or two times. 99,9% attempts were unsuccessful. When I disable "Switchable graphics" and restart, I get without-signal display. The only solution is reset BIOS setting to default by removing and putting back the coin battery.
Could anybody confirm that issue? My hardware configuration is Intel i5-6300HQ, AMD FirePro W5170M, 1x16 GB DDR non-ECC and UltraSharp IGZO-Display Ultra HD.
I also have almost the same issue with it. What I found out by now - if energy saving is on, you can let windows start (to the login screen that you don't see), close the display (enable standby), re-activate it, and mostly the display is coming after that. I never had to reset BIOS (v1.20) to make it work again.
As the screen itself is turning on (background led), i think the issue is about the connection from the AMD FirePro W5170M card to the display when switching is enabled. IGP isn't experiencing this issue at all.
What's also part of this issue is, when IGP is disabled, the display is flickering from time to time in Windows (Windows 7 x64). This issue neither changed when I updated the driver, nor was it affected by installing Catalyst.
At last I also saw 10-15% performance differences between the two modes (even if the application was run by the AMD GPU).
Our configuration is Intel i7-6820HQ, AMD FirePro W5170M, 1x16GB non-ECC, also with the UHD Display.

Attempted to up-date to Windows 10. Couldn't do it. Microsoft (MS) Tech tried to do it and couldn't do it. It seems there are some security tools that must be removed as they are incompatable with Windows 10. MS tried to remove and couldn't do it. He said they were on the mother board and when he tried to remove them they just kept coming back so once again he couldn't do it. He said contact HP and they could do it. Unable to find anybody at HP that can do it. As you can see nobody can do it so I guess it just cannot be done. That is unless some fine person out there has discovered a way to do it. I am just wondering whether I can put a eGPU on my HP Probook 4540s to play some of the more modern games and some of the games that are a few years old now on something like high to ultra graphics. I'm thinking something along the line of a NVIDIA GTX 960 or 970ish. I actually even found some GeForce GTX 1050's at a cheaper price so is there a way I could connect something like that to this laptop. It would be cheaper then trying to save for an actual gaming rig at this time. Thank you for any replies its much appreciated.Read other answers
I have a new ProBook 4540s notebook that I shut down over the weekend. I am not sure if I put it into hibernate, sleep, or what as I am still getting use to it. When I tried to turn it on (not plugged in) I got nothing. So I plugged in the power cord and hit the power button again. All it did was the LED above the cord plug blinked about 8 times and nothing else. I let it "charge" overnight and tried again in the morning. Nothing but a blinking LED. I Googled the problem and it said to take the battery out, unplug, and hold the power button down for 20 seconds. I plugged it back in but left the battery out, and still the same thing - flashing LED. HELP! Thanks.

Hello! My ProBook 4540s was working fine until a half hour ago, when I unplugged it to move it and then attempted to plug it back in, and it stopped charging. When plugging in the power cord (that came with the ProBook when I bought it around 18 months ago), the light above the power jack (and no other lights) flashes white 9 times. I've tried following this fix I found on Google: 1. Turn off the notebook2. remove the battery3. remove the charging adapter4. press + hold the power button for 40 seconds5. insert the charging adaptor only6. press the power button and it supposedly continues but I get stuck at this point, because even plugged in, my ProBook won't start up without the battery in also. Is this a know problem/is there a fix for this?

I found that my Probook 4540s sometimes cannot boot. I have to use the trick applied to 4530s: remove battery, press power button for 40s, put the adapter. Sometimes the trick works, sometimes it doesn't. Is this a bios issue? Any solution for this?
Well did you try reseating the memory? Has the computer worked since you have upgraded the memory? Also are the memory chips the same speed? If your running two different speed chips it could cause this issue. ThanksSeanRead other 10 answers
Hi, I ve been using a Probook 4540s from the year 2013. Today while I was reading a book (offline) my display stated to give some unclear pictures. Pictures were moving up and down and gave overlapped scences. Please refer the attached GIF or click here to understand the scenario (Link to GIF https://giphy.com/gifs/QzGO4cPW76wUM ) I updated the Intel Video Driver also but it could not solve the issue. Then I restarted the computer. During the boot process I realized it is not a software issue as the dispaly was acting the same. I feel this is like a hardware issue in the display or the ribbon cable. Please look at this and help me solve the case. Highly appreciate your coordiantion on this. I understand that your touchpad will freeze.
Do a hard reset.
Turn the computer off.
Remove the power cable and the battery.
Hold down the power button for 15 sec while booth power sources are removed.
This should reset the hardware in the computer.
As you power it back on tap the F2 key. This will load hardware diagnostics.
Run the startup test.
This will test all the hardware in the system and detect any problems.
If the entire test passes, turn off the computer.
As you turn it back on tap the F10 key. This will load BIOS setup utility.
Press F9 to load defaults.
Press F10 to save and exit.
When the computer boots back up, check to see if everything is working.

My laptop is running Windows 10 64-bit.
For the past few weeks my laptop has been turning off unexpectedly.
I've tried with battery only. With battery and power cable and with battery removed and only power cable.
I am using the machine normally and then screen just goes black and power offs - no restart, no hibernation, no shut down. Just instantaneously off.
It's not overheating. Could it be a fan issue?
I don't know - but it's getting quite irritating as I often have many apps open and many files open on each app and takes me 30 mins to get back to where I left off.
Is this the same problem as the thread you have posted or is it a different one.

Hi, I've got a secondhand Probook 4540s from a shop near me which sells used laptops. At the time i got it it came with Windows 7 Professional 64bit. Everything was working smoothly, then I started updating the graphics card drivers and other drivers in it (in hopes of improving perfomance) and it was around that time that windows started complaining that this version of windows is not genuine. (I think it was after i updated bios or something. or I used a non microsoft software to download microsoft updates because my microsoft update manager was not working) So to the problem at hand now. I want to format my pc and for that I need windows product key right? I cant find it! It is not in the back of my laptop, not under the battery (The battery is seemed to be replaced) and I did not get any installation media along with the laptop. Any idea how to get my windows product key? or do I even need one to install windows in this laptop (like win8)I dont think the people at the shop can help me on this. (Also, the Probook 4540s does ship with windows installed right?)

Luck_amit001 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! As far as I know, HP only supplies Windows drivers, not Linux. And since those are completely different OSs, you can not use Windows drivers in Linux. Also, for Linux support, since HP does not provide that, you would need to contact the appropriate Linux support form for the Distro that you are running. Here?s an HP troubleshooting document for notebooks that won?t start, along with some info about LED error codes: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01732674 If that doesn?t help, it is probably a hardware issue. I have problem, Bios password forget.
Dear Customer, Welcome to HP Support Forum and we are glad to assist you. This is to inform you that all HP Business Notebooks such as Probooks or Elitebooks have more stringent security than consumer models infact they don't produce 'halt codes', the password cannot be derived from the Serial Number and the code is stored in non-volatile memory so removing the RTC cell will not reset the password in this case. Please have a look at this link. http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/49497-HP-Probook-Elitebook-BIOS-Password-Reset-Utility 2. Please Contact HP Business Notebook support they should be able to send you a customized SMC.bin file which you can use at boot to reset the password. Dear Customer,Welcome and Thank you for posting your query on HP Support Forum It looks like you are not able to Power ON the Notebook and wanted to fix the issuePlease perform below shown steps to find out if this is a software or hardware issue:1. Remove all Peripherals and Cables, Disconnect them and try to Power ON the Unit 2. Check for LED Light Status and ensure Power Button spring action is normal 3. Swap with a known good Power Cord and Power Adapter 4. Incase no Adapter is available, Check if the Power Adapter is slightly warmNote: This will give us a hint that the Power Adapter might be fine 5. Do you know if the Notebook was in Battery or Power Adapter Mode when you used it for the last timeNote: Ensure there is no liquid spillage or Power Outage 6. Check if the AC Adapter Port is loose/broken Note: If the Notebook doesn't Power ON even with a known good Power Adapter this confirms the Hardware fault with System Board or the DC Power Circuit Hope this helps, for any further queries reply to the post and feel free to join us again **Click the 'Thumbs Up Button' to say Thanks** Make it easier for other people to find solutions by marking a Reply 'Accept as Solution' if it solves your problem.
