Thinkpad X1 Extreme (thinkpad x1e) - Speaker Crackle/Noise

Q: Thinkpad X1 Extreme (thinkpad x1e) - Speaker Crackle/Noise

Hello, I've been using Thinkpad X1 Extreme for the past 1.5 months. And now speakers(or only right one I believe) started having an issue with crackled/noise sound on high frequencies. It's almost unusable to listen something with speakers because of how painfull it to the ears. Is there anything possible to do with it to fix it? Or replace internal speaker. Recording with sound:https://www.dropbox.com/s/tjqzczipq45xyh1/video_2019-07-29_15-03-27.mp4?dl=0

I just received X1 Extreme.
Everything works fine and as expected, but there is one thing that keeps bugging me.
It's a weird little electric noise X1E makes.

Here is the electric noise.
I am not sure what causes this noise but I think this happens when the fan starts running.
I don't think the laptop should make this kind of noise since there is no HDD, CD, or other parts that makes noise other than fan.
And fan should not make those electric noise.

Also, I noticed that there is little rattling sound (only noticable when I put my ears very close to bottom of laptop).

The elctric sound happens when heavy-loading and the rattling sound is unnoticeable.
But I am worried if there is some malfunctioning hardware in my laptop.

Does anyone have similar issue? Is this normal?

A:Thinkpad X1 Extreme weird noise / Fan Noise

I received my X1 Extreme yesterday. So far great machine, but I have niggle with the fans. When testing the machine, the fans kick in as expected, but as well as a general "whoosh" sound of air blowing, which is sort of loud, I also hear a faint high pitched sound that is a little annoying; it is more prevalant in the right fan.

Is this fan loudness and the faint high pitched sound just normal for these fans? I am in two minds whether to return or get someone out to fix it up, only to find it is 'normal' for these laptops. Any thoughts, or experiences from others?

Here is a link of the fan sound I am experiencing.... https://youtu.be/k_Z5zOUMsUM This recording was taken about 15-20cm away from the device on the right side, opposite the power button. You can hear them slowly ramping up, and then ramping down.
Btw the way I am not concerned as to when the fans come, as that is working fine, it is just the sound they are making, in particular the background high pitched sound, and whether they are supposed to be this loud?

I got mine X1 Extreme back in December 2018 and it's been making this strange electrical type noise similar to how a regular hard drive sounds while it's plates are spinning. It doesn't sound like the fans. It is not really loud but it does vary in loudness. When it's at its loudest, I can hear it while typing in a quite room. Other times, I can only hear it if I put my ear next to the keyboard. I read some posts here about the coil whine. Is that it? Is it normal? Any way to get rid of it?

A:ThinkPad X1 Extreme "Electrical" Noise

Reading the following article I am quite sure the noise I have is the coil whine: What Is Coil Whine, and Can I Get Rid of It on My PC? - How-To Geek. I can only assume that there is no good way to get rid of it completely in this laptop or is there?

Dear Lenovo, when are you finally going to officially address the fact that many recently released notebooks suffer from audio issues when listening to audio via the headphone jack. In specific, the phenomenon can be observed best when listening to audio via headphones. If you listen to audio which quickly changes the volume then you can hear a clear crackling noise on the right audio channel. If you listen to normal speech for example, which includes small breaks you can hear a crackling noise each time before the person starts to speak and when the person stops to speak. A good example for observing this issue is the following YouTube video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCOHTLNMvCE Listening to the first two minutes of the video linked above with headphones plugged into the audio jack is already enough to observe the issue. If your device is affected you will be able to observe a little crackling noise on your right headphone audio channel, each time there is a small break between the talking. This issue has already been reported a thousand times all over the internet and not only affects the ThinkPad X1 Extreme, but also many other high-profile ThinkPad product lines. For example, this issue has been mentioned in the official Lenovo forum here, but you chose to not respond. Instead you let people struggle with this issue. Moreover, the forum entry below confirms that also the ... Read more

See subject.  Ever since the BIOS upgrade, the dock no longer crashes.  Two days running now with no problems; prior to the upgrade it would crash routinely when connecting via USB-C.  I had to employ the unsavoury workaround of connecting the laptop to a charger and connecting it to the dock via the USB-A port using the USB-A to USB-C adaptor supplied.  Now I'm connecting via USB-C cable only. In fact, I'd given up on using the dock at all and had it just sitting there.  I decided to give it another go after reading that BIOS v1.19 fixed instances of BSODs occuring when connected to an external monitor (which I did experience now and again when connecting to an external monitor via HDMI i.e. not via dock).    Dock Type : 40AFX1E Type : 20MF

Hi I bought a X1 Extreme last week and it's driving me nuts already. The notebook simply does not charge. When I plug-in the power adapter, Windows says that the power supply is plugged-in. But the battery status doesn't change, in both ways (it's not charging but also not discharging). It just stays at the current charging status for hours. I also have Lenovo dockingstation "ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock 170W" and it's the same problem. After a research on the internet, I found the following article which actually helps, but only for a single charge. But as soon as I unplug the power supply again, I have to reboot again, turn of the battery in the BIOS and reconnect the power supply again. https://stebalien.com/blog/fix-for-lenovo-x1-carbon-not-charging/ The drivers are all up to date (installed via Lenovo System Update application). Does anybody suffer from this issue aswell? Thanks for your help!

My new X1 Extreme hangs every few days. It locks up HARD, so that the only way to restart is to hold the power button down until it turns off.I've updated all the drivers, but one:The U630 Intel video driver will not install. It complains that it can't install on this operating system (Windows 10). Has anyone else had this problem & found a solution? (more concerned about the lock-ups than the Intel driver) I also updated the BIOS recently, but that didn't help.

I purchased an X1 Extreme (4K) a few months ago. I have run into a few issues and was hoping I could get some advice. For reference, I have observed these issues across multiple different Windows versions, GeForce driver versions, and Lenovo BiOS versions. I am happy to answer any follow-up questions in the comments. 1.When I have hybrid graphics enabled, I have observed significant stutter when scrolling in applications such as Google Chrome, Spotify, and more, especially when opening PDFs in Chrome. Turning off hybrid graphics resolves fixes this, but I was wondering if there was another option I had other than compromising my battery life by disabling hybrid graphics.2.When I keep the TrackPoint enabled, it occasionally begins moving the cursor on its own and keeps going for a few seconds, with no apparent way to regain control until it stops. While I can fix this by just turning off the TrackPoint, I enjoy using it and would like to know if there is a different solution to this issue. Thank you in advance!

And yesterday I noted the screen is somehow ungluing the notebook structure (photos attached). Tried to reach the Support team. 40 minutes in the phone to make a request. 1 hour at the browser waiting for a chat appointment. After finally getting the protocol with my complaining, at the same night the protocol were "solved", magically! Worst consumer experience I ever had. I want my money back.

I just received my new Thinkpad Extreme laptop with 4k screen a few days ago. I'm formerly a Macbook Pro user and I love the Thinkpad Extreme. However, I'm shocked to see that my real-world battery life usage is 4hrs and 40mins. Especially when they advertise the battery life to be 14 hrs! My power mode is set to "Better Battery", screen brightness at about 80% and I'm the only doing web browsing and some youtube videos. Not even video rendering or editing. This is a massive deal-breaker for me. I was hopping for about 6 hours at least. Can any other Thinkpad Extreme user with 4k monitor advise if this is normal? How much battery life do you get? I checked with support but they refuse to tell me what the average battery life I should be expecting and just say that battery life will vary with usage. I found this review online which says they got 6 hours 7mins of continuous wifi web surfing: https://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/laptops/lenovo-thinkpad-x1-extreme Again, I feel quite a let down because the the specs say up to 14 hours. I was expecting even at half of that I was hoping to get about 7 hours. But about 4+ hours is really bad - its almost the same as my 7 year old Macbook Pro which I switched from.

I installed a new 1TB SSD - Crucial P1 1TB 3D NAND NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD - CT1000P1SSD8. Partitioned and formatted in Windows 10, everything seemed fine. After a little use I started to get intermittent problems. Sometimes before Windows boots I get a  '2104: Detection error on SSD2 (M.2)'. Sometimes the drive disappears from Windows. Sometimes copying a file from the drive will hang and when I try to look at the file's security options in the file explorer I just see a red X and I can't see them. Crucial's Storage Executive sometimes shows the drive and says it is healthy. Other times it does not show up. Lenovo's system health check says there are read errors on the drive.  I have reseated the card a couple of times to make sure the connection is sound. Any ideas? I'm grateful for any help. Julian

A:ThinkPad X1 Extreme new 1TB SSD intermittent faults

I have never used that drive, but I will make a general comment.  I have often had problems with NVMe drives on several machines, related to compatibility.  This is not just Lenovo machines.  My problems have been related to timing (like, I believe, yours) and ATA security (passwords).  I think the underlying issues are very technical in nature (above my pay grade), and not easily fixed.  A year ago, I spent days chasing down an ATA security problem and I finally gave up and resold the drive.  Now, for NVMe drives, I only use those that are certified  or recommended by the computer manufacturer.  My assumption on SATA drives was that they all work fine.

I couldn't find any other topic about this so here we go:At first, my laptop fans went full speed every few minutes or so for like 5 seconds every time, that got fixed by a bios update. Now it is silent, always, and that's the problem right now, even if it is almost too hot to touch the fans won't speed up so it doesn't cool enough. I looked everywhere for a manual way to turn the fan speed higher (like MSI has on their laptops) but I couldn't find a way.My question: Can I fix this somehow, is there a setting I missed, is there anything at all I can do about this?

Just bought a ThinkPad X1 Extreme UHD and had some questions because I plan on doing a few things upon receiving it. Got the smallest drive because I'm swapping it out with a pair of Samsung EVO 970s I have to dual boot. Doing a clean install from my Windows 10 USB installer and I have Pro license through my Microsoft account, so not concerned about losing the recovery partition and license. I pretty much never use the manufacturers recovery partition because it typically comes with bloat and redundant utilities; just takes up space. Windows comes with enough bloat on a clean install--don't need more. That being said, my concern is with the UHD touchscreen and its ability to recognize a ThinkPad Pen Pro: will I need to manually install an additional driver or program to make sure everything works properly? (Seems fairly straightfoward if I do: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-...) After that, I intend to under-volt the CPU in the BIOS.
