Solved: unsure of how to update my ethernet port drivers

Q: Solved: unsure of how to update my ethernet port drivers

Hey guys-

Okay, so recently i reformatted my computer and have been unable to figure out how to update my ethernet port drivers.. I realize that it should not be that hard to figure out, but i'm stuck

basic info about my computer:

Dell XPS 600
Media Center 2005 Edition with Service Pack 2

Basically, i was able to download drivers for my wireless card off of a friends computer and just transferred them over to mine.

right now, under my device manager for my network adapters, two things show up.

one is my Linksys Wireless-N USB Network Adapter WUSB300N

the other says 1394 Adapter

Where do i go from here? i cannot seem to figure out where to download from on the Dell site, as entering my service tag got me nowhere.. unless i am looking for the wrong thing? Anyone have any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi, one of my friends is trying to get the internet in his new house and encountered problems and as he's computer illiterate he asked me to see if I can fix it for him. He's trying to set up a wireless connection with Talk Talk. They sent him a D-Link box and disc but when I tried to set it up I got an error screen saying "Ethernet port not detected" and it suggested that I check in Network Connections and enable it. But there is nothing in Network Connections. Odd. There is on my laptop (but my ethernet port works fine so that makes sense I guess)

He used to go online on his computer but he used a USB port so I don't think there is any other issue with the PC. It's Windows XP and the motherboard is a GeForce 6100-m7. I'm guessing that it needs new drivers which is why it isn't working. But when I went to device manager expecting to see a yellow exclamation mark, I saw nothing there at all. In fact I don't even see a section for Network Adaptors like there is on mine. So do you think it's the drivers or could it be something else?

And if it is the drivers could someone be so kind as to link me to a site that will provide me with them and a short explanation as to how I'd install them? Normally I'd just give it a shot but it's not my machine so I don't want to risk it. Especially as he's my landlord!
I hope this all made sense and I gave enough details, I only vaguely understand what I'm talki... Read more

I've had trouble connecting to my own internet and have no wireless. I'm using my neighbor's wireless and it's really slowing her's down.

I've tried restarting my laptop (it usually works) and then reinstalled the device under "device manager". It's not the cord, I've checked with my neighbor's laptop and it works fine.

I use a Sony Vaio VGN-NS140E with Windows Vista SP2. I'm not sure what other information to give.

Any suggestions welcome!

So this might be pretty long but this is all that has happened so far. So my laptop which is a HP DM4 it was fine nd everything but it would shut itself off but i had it plugged in and everything then when i went to turn it bck on it said to put a recovery disc so i went on my mom's laptop nd downloaded that nd burned it and used it. It reinstalled Windows 7 but when it would boot up it would look like Windows 7 but the log on screen nd home screen would look like Windows XP so i been downloading drivers since i dnt have most the stuff i need nd i got Areo nd it looks like Windows 7 again but the clock nd those icons still look like XP like it shows a computer instead of wifi bars. So problem is now that my internet button doesnt work for wifi nd there is no networks to connect too nd some drivers are missing which ive tried so many things nd not getting anywhere. Idk what i did though but out of the times i was trying to download windows 7 i finally got windows 7 home premium up but it was all black nd said it was an ungenuine copy nd was on a temporary account nd everything would get deleted after logging off. After i shut dwn it made me reinstall windows nd now ive tried to get bck to the black screen one but it just goes ito the XP looking one.

Hello all.

I have a problem with my ethernet port on my workstation.

The computer crashed so i reformatted it with a fresh install of WinXp Pro.

Here are the system specs:

Symantec Endpoint Protection
Windows Firewall
Service Pack 3
Network User - Logged on as Administrator on Network Domain
Internet comes from modem to 16 port switch to workstation. all other stations work fine (even with SP3)
2.4 Core 2 Duo
2 gb ram
Asus P5945GC mobo

Before, the internet was working before I reformatted it. Now I cant connect to internet, network or anything else. The network cable is unplugged icon is on at the bottom right corner of the screen. I have tried numerous versions of the ethernet driver, and nothing helps. I have tried setting up a manual connection for broadband connection and nothing works.

i am assuming it is a software problem, because nothing physically happened to the ethernet plug or port. I even tried plugging in a different ethernet cable into the pc and still nothing.

I am thinking it might have somthing to do with SP3 or some kind of setting not allowing it to be used. I checked Device Manager, it is working properly and enabled.

Im stumpted, if anyone can help, I would appreciate it.

Hi, I've had this problem a month ago but I fixed it by doing system restore. After the update, my ethernet port won't work (orange light won't come on but green does) for my Xbox 360. So I did a system restore and it was fixed. Now it came back yesterday, but I restored again to the day before and voila, it's back. It's demanding me to restart after every 5 minutes...Now I know if I do this my ethernet port is not going to function.

Now, I don't want to just stop the pop up from coming until next restart or forever, I already know how to do that. I want the update NOT to happen forever, but still want all other updates...

Any way to fix this?

Okay so I was having a BSOD problem that ANTHONY pretty much told me how to sort out, good right?

I downloaded the driver for it and then I got a message saying "The contents of this file cannot be unpacked. The executable you are trying to run has been corrupted. Please obtain another copy of the file, and its integrity, and try again."

So I tried re-downloading, same thing.
Used a download manager, same thing.
Run as Admin, same thing.

Then I clicked on my connection on the far right of my task bar opened up 'Properties' and then 'Driver information' Navigated through all the options till I came across "Search your computer for drivers" Or something along those lines.

Hit search and see the file I've just downloaded as the only file to select.

Nope, It instantly BSOD's me...Done it multiple times incase it was just bad timing but apparently not.

Could someone maybe shine a torch of help into the dark room which is my Driver problem?

Thank's for reading.

I've signed up for Verizon DSL and I was reading over some other customers observations regarding the USB connection vs. Ethernet. My HP (5 yrs. 0ld)
doesn't have an ethernet card. I have seen cards that need to be installed such as Radio Shack's D-Link? 10/100M LAN Card, but don't want to install any more cards into my computer. I was wondering if there is an
external ethernet available? I want the best speed and reliability possible, thats why I'm looking into this.

Or, would USB work ok? I know there I have read posts regarding USB being slower than ethernet, and that USB is less reliable. Any suggestions would be great!

After that the hard drive didn't work at all, so I found an extra used the boot and nuke, then used acronis and it worked, I booted up Windows 7 (I also have vista just in case) and it installed fine. I get to the windows screen extremely happy, (took me a week to get my computer working again) then I look and I have no internet. Says the drivers aren't installed, so I insert my motherboard drivers and still nothing. Well today I finally gave up, I went into best buy and told them I needed the driver (figured that was the problem) they couldn't get it either, he figured it was windows 7 so he gave me the driver for vista 64 bit and sent me on my way. Got home, reinstalled with vista, run the driver, still nothing, try my mobo driver, still nothing. I gave up, so now I post here hoping someone can help me.

Would really appreciate some help with the following issue:

The other day I started to get issues connecting to the internet through my Ethernet port. I’m not having any issues connecting through the wireless connection. I’ve have tried isolating what the issue could be, it does not seem to be the Ethernet ports on the wireless modem as there are other devices connected that are working fine. I have also tried using multiple Ethernet cables – I can still connect to the router through Ethernet, but am just not getting an internet connection.

About a month ago the ISP updated the SSID but I could still connect after that by Ethernet. I noticed when I plug it in it tries to connect to the old SSID and not the new one that is used when I try to connect to the wireless.

I tired following this guys instructions and change the name of the SSID of the lan connection to the new wireless one. Basically I edited the name of the lan profile in the registry. Following these instructions:

That didn’t change anything besides it stopped saying “limited connectivity” when connected by Ethernet.

I am looking at an acer from best buy, and under networking it says NONE.
But in the 360 it shows an ethernet port. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...916305&IcsCsid=39-313-5-24505-0-20529-676-0-1

So it leaves me with this question. Do all recent laptops come with an ethernet port to do a wired connection?

Its an Acer Aspire.
On note another acer 50 dollers more says ethernet in networking. (Built-in Ethernet connectivity with RJ-45 connector) What is the difference? http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...=acer&lp=2&type=product&cp=2&id=1218021916305

A:Solved: Do all recent laptops come with an ethernet port?

I seriously doubt that you'll find a factory-made name-brand laptop or desktop out there that doesn't have a hard-wire ethernet port.

RJ-45 is the description given for a hard-wire ethernet port.

RJ-11 is the description given for a hard-wire dial-up port.

They look almost identical, except the ethernet port is larger.

Click the "Specifications" tab in both links that you posted, and you'll see that both have a hard-wire RJ-45 ethernet port and have built-in 802.11b/g/n wireless.

Both links are for an Acer Extensa EX4630-4791, and both list for $499.99.

So here's my issue I recently installed Arkham City on my computer played it for a while, tried google chrome, gave me a corrupt profile error or something (internet still worked and was connected at the time) restarted my computer and now it's telling me there isn't an ethernet cable connected to my computer.

Here's what I tried so far:
-Uninstalling and reinstalling the driver
-Updating the driver
-Using the network troubleshooting for windows 7
-Doing a system restore before I installed the game (gave me an error saying could not complete restore)
-Currently scanning my computer in safe mode with networking (seeing if that might work, doesn't) with malewarebytes
-Unplugged and replugged the router and modem
-Checked the router on another computer to see if there's a connection (there is none)
-Checked the router to see if there is a light in the port connected to the ethernet, it's blinking at a very slow a steady pace, unlike the ones around it which are solid green lights
-Tried the ethernet cable on another computer, works fine.

After that not working with or without the router, I tried to use the USB port on my modem to my computer, that would do the same thing - get stuck on accuirering network address. My ethernet port has been not been working for a few months. I go to my networks and there is no ethernet adapter listed...only a wireless adapter. Also, it does not show up in device manager. I reinstalled the driver and then restarted my computer. My ethernet port worked for a little bit, but when I used my computer the next day it did not work, and the ethernet adapter was no longer in device manager. Anyone know what's up?

I recently downgraded my old laptop (an acer aspire 5715z) from vista to xp. After installing xp I found that a lot of the drivers needed updating, so I bought 'hardware helper' which managed to find and update 28 of the drivers.
However, even as it said it downloaded and installed the drivers for an 'Atheros AR5008 Wireless Network Adapter' the wireless internet still doesn't work and on the device manager it still has 2 ethernet controllers with exclaimation marks on them. (the other ethernet controller i believe is a 'Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx' as it says on the hardware helper thing - same issue with that but i'm more concerned about the wireless ability).
I have tried searching to find other drivers for the atheros ar5008 but even then they install fine it still doesn't work.

Please help

Hiya AceOfBass.

This isn`t going to be what you want to hear but I had a problem with an Atheros Wi-Fi chip recently and after installing, uninstalling, reinstalling and generally messing about with things, the only way to get a wireless connection was to disable the Atheros chip in Device Manager and use a stand-alone USB Wi-Fi dongle from Maplins.

As far as I can make out, the Atheros chip doesn`t have a good reputation and it can be a real headache to get it working if it decides to stop playing which is why the independant USB dongle came into use.

Reinstalled Windows XP because of a bad virus. (Had done same a few months ago w/no problems.) Now missing ethernet driver and 4 others. Most important is the ethernet....because I cannot go on line to download anything. Found the right driver/controller for my Gateway 700GR desktop (about 5 years old -- and recovery disks no longer work). Contacted Gateway via email -- and there best advice was to go to their support area and download the driver, even after I reminded them I could not go on line.

There are 5 yellow question marks over each driver in the device manager.

I've tried to download the Marvell Yukon driver to my laptop -- and tried to download it directly to a CD. Doesn't seem to work.

First, I do not have a flash drive and am not sure it would work on my desktop anyway.

Is there a way that I am missing that would allow me to download the driver to my laptop, then disk, or whatever? Am pulling out my hair.

What is keeping you from burning the drivers to a cd?

Go to the gateway support site and download the drivers and copy to a flash drive ( CD is ok too) . . double click the file to install them on the gateway.

Be sure to install the chipset drivers first . . the others will probably not install without that

My wife's laptop crashed and she reinstalled the XP but now can't get online. I found her the network drivers here: http://support.gateway.com/support/...latform=10022&model=10944&os=10406&type=10095
but it did not work. We did a search on the installation disc but no drivers were found there.

Her computer is a Gateway laptop model MX3417 running XP

In device manager it says Nvidia nForce network controller has a red "X". Under that there is a list of items with yellow question marks:

(Other Devices)

Ethernet Controller
PCI Device
SM Bus Controller
Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

Network Adapters/Nvidia nForce Networking Controller is listed as working properly.

We are currently on a TrendNet wirelss router.

Any help would be appreciated.

OK Folks, I'm in desperate need of help finding a ethernet controller driver. I recently reinstalled XP Home SP3. I have that big yellow question mark in Device Manager and no internet via the ethernet port. I've uninstalled the drivers and rebooted but to no avail.

I have an older Compaq 6010US with a Nvidia nForce 220 (DDR) crush (11) chipset.

I managed to get the video and sound drivers from the Nvidia site with their automatic update scan but I can't find anything about this chipset or ethernet controller drivers from them. I've Googled and Googled but can't find anything even remotely close enough to download. I can see that this is very common after a reload but can't find anything that applies to my situation.

Right now I'm using a wireless setup as a temporary fix.

I would be very grateful for any good leads in the right direction

I was having trouble with my IBM Thinkpad T41 2373 so I factory reset it and set everything up. When it came to connecting to the internet I found that in device manager I was missing in my "Other Devices" section my Ethernet, Multimedia Audio, Network and Video Controller drivers as well as my PCI Modem driver. I tried and tried to find information about what I'd need and looked around trying various driver software I found but none worked. I'm currently running Win XP Pro 2002 Service Pack 3. If anyone knows what drivers I need and more importantly where I can get them please let me know. If you need more information to help me just ask and I'll try my best to get that info. Thanks in advance for your interest in helping me!

I mistakenly deleted my infra red port drivers on my AST Ascentia J Series laptop. I don't have a CD with the drivers. AST no longer has a working web site. Am I up a creek?

I need the infra red port program TranXit. It used to be the most common program for managing laptop infra red ports. I've tried the pumatech.com page, but did not find the program. Any idea whether I can use a generic program or do I need one specifically made for my AST laptop?

Transfer files from one computer to another. Tranxit used to be distributed freely with the Sharp/Toshiba notebooks. But it will work with others too.

I attempted to install an internet security suite on our other computer, a Compac Deskpro running Windows 98SE, in early Feb. this year. Part way thru the install the suite said I needed to update the virus signatures to complete the installation but I was not connected to the internet. When I tried to do so it wouldn't connect and the program then offered to do it for me and did. Near the download end, the program brought up a registration form which I filled out and clicked to submit. Everything instantly crashed. I got Task Manager to end the non responding submission screen and restore partial control. I tried to reconnect to the internet to see if the virus updates finished , but no connection could be made. I shut the whole thing down and restarted. No connection to the ISP. I wrestled with their absolutely useless "24/7 tech support" for 6 weeks with nothing offered to correct. I finally took a gamble and erased the whole suite, but no fix. I hope somebody here can.
Here's what Iv'e bumbled around and found. The computer starts, Windows starts but disolves into a message saying the registry or the system .ini is calling for a "device" I have removed which I should reinstall since it might be citical to Windows operation. Press any key to continue (which it does). There seems to be a file reference to 'dfs.vxd' at the bottom corner of the screen. "FIND" doesn't show it on the computer. System Info shows no COM... A:Solved: Recovery of COM 3 port (? drivers)

COM3 is installed as part of the modem drivers, not as a function of installing Windows.

COM3 is a "virtual COM port" used by software modems. "dfs.vxd" is part of the modem drivers.

You need to reinstall the modem drivers, but it is possiblle you may have a Windows file corruption as well, after such an event.

Identify the modem, visit the makers website and download the correct W98 drivers. Then install them.

You cannot use a Windows XP disk for any part of this, it's entirely different.

You may need your Windows 98 disk at some stage of the process, you should never be in the position of not having one.

If it was a "pre-installed version" of Windows 98 (hence no disks) then a copy of all the Windows 98 CAB files should be on the hard drive.
And as a friendly hint, breaking up your post into paragraphs makes it easier to read, many will just give up at a solid block of text.
