unusual issue with Explorer hanging when opening folders

Q: unusual issue with Explorer hanging when opening folders

First note- I have ruled out malware causes for now. I've run scans with MBAM(quick plus selective specific folder scans)), SAS(quick and full) and TDSSkiller, and found nothing at all.

Second note- a reboot seems to have cleared the issue, for now. I'll monitor it though. I just want to know the cause.

Okay so... first off I had clogged the RAM some by running Firefox overnight a couple nights to play some "idle" type games. I play them a lot, and I really should stop. Second, I bought an MP3 player as a birthday gift for someone and had to load music onto it(they lack the means). It is a USB 1.1 device so file transfers were slow and it took about 2 hours to get everything on. I suspect this clogged Explorer.

This started shortly after finishing that task. I put in a micro SD card to put some files onto it, created a fresh folder and... the window opened then minimized. The taskbar showed it there but with a generic icon and clicking did nothing. I could close it by clicking the X box. Took a bit of work, removed and reseated the card but it persisted. Thinking maybe the SD card was causing it I wanted to run a test on the card- opening a local folder did the same thing PLUS I got a popup to update Javascript- legit, I believe. I ran malware scans and found nothing. Eventually proceeding it seemed that if I copied and pasted a folder name it would definitely cause this when working with the SD card, typing the name manually let me proceed. Okay, all is fine, still no idea what happened. Then it later happens again a couple hours ago only this time the stray folder wouldn't close.

I ran a full scan with SAS, no malware. I figured I'd update Java. The stray window remained. I rebooted. This seems to have cleared the issue, but I ran MBAM scans on a few specific folders anyway, still nothing.

So did I merely clog up Explorer with the heavy file transferring/Flash gaming or could this have another cause? It only affected folders when I opened them and didn't seem to hinder PC usage beyond that.

Preferred Solution: unusual issue with Explorer hanging when opening folders

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It seems to be system processes that cannot open for some reason. If I open a third party application like Process Explorer and run that as administrator I can, however, if I open task manager with administrator rights it never opens and consent.exe just hangs. I tried this in safe mode and everything works just fine.

I had just finished doing a malware scan (Malware Bytes, SuperAntiSpyware, JRT, Combofix, etc...)

A:Having an issue with consent.exe hanging when opening with administrator

Try running "sfc /scannow" in an elevated CMD prompt with out the quotes.

For the past 2 days, when I try to open my IE6 browser, it first takes up upto 100% CPU, hangs the system for a while and then opens up taking hell lot of time!
The same thing happens when I try to open another browser simultaneously.

Sometimes the process explorer.exe plays the same irritating role of hanging the system!

I've already scanned my system with the latest CWShredder, Adaware, Spybot S&D, and Norton AV 2005 but the problem stands as it is!

Hi, Im new to this site as far as a registered user but ive been here quite a few times,my issue is my computer keeps hanging up randomly especially when it idles for a few minutes. I noticed today that when it hangs up after idle if I wait about 1 minute or so the computer will respond partially, and by partially I mean I can still click start menu and open ctrl alt del and end processes BUT the performance tab shows no activity and doesnt respond to any activity. Today when it happened I was able to end task on explorer.exe and the computer was ok and as soon as i opened a new task through task mgr and ran explorer.exe it froze again instantly. I also tried to experiment by closing explorer.exe and leaving the computer idle for a couple hours with success and I opened explorer.exe up and it still didnt freeze. Im trying to figure out how to fix this issue without a format, also to add Ive had a fresh format for about 2 months now with absolutely no issues and hardware temps are great so I know its not that. Ive tried uninstalling recently installed software with also no success, and It also happened alot when I would exit rollercoaster tycoon 3 so i uninstalled that and the same issue occurred. Thanks in advance guys!

I just installed windows 7 this week on my dell xps.
But an issue occurred friday which I can't fix.
When I try to open a new folder it always open in a new window. I have "Open each folder in same window" clicked.
I have googled and tried a myriad of different ways which people would say work but for me it hasn't

If I right click and choose open it will open in same window but not if I double click. It's rather annoying as you get tons of folders very quickly.

Anyone have any ideas for how to fix it?

A:Issue with folders opening new windows

Hi cooker3,

Copy and paste the following code into Notepad. Click on the File menu, then Save As and click on the drop down menu to change the file type to All Files. Save as fix2.reg to your desktop:

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell]
@="none"
Double click the file to run it, accept the changes to the registry and then reboot.

I always like to backup the registry or set a new Restore Point before doing anything with the registry.

Let me know if any of that helps.

Welcome to TSG....

The file could be corrupt delete it and the rar file and re-download it.

The file also could be infected and since opened could have infected your computer please to downlaod and run the following:

To download HJTsetup.exe To Download HijackThis go to the following: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item5
Filename = 1137518044HJTsetup.exe
Save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialog boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialog.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialog box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
At the top of the Notepad HJT log screen, hit Edit then Select All then click Edit and then click Copy doing that copies the text to the clipboard, you won't see it yet....
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

A security expert should take a look at your log - please be patient.

Hi All, got a new laptop with win7pro 64.

In Explorer this command line has always worked in everything from w2000 to win7 Starter.

C:\Windows\explorer.exe /c,C:\MyStuff\Downloads

In the left Panel it would display
c:\MyStuff
........Downloads
....NextFolder
....NextFolder
....etc...

.... (dots required for indenting as this editor stripped out blank spaces)

and in the right Panel it listed the contents of the Download Folder. The search bar at the top would show the full correct Path

With this win7pro for the same command line in the left Panel all that I get is...
c:\

and in the right Panel, the contents of the Download Folder. The search bar at the top shows the full correct Path

I have been chasing around the web and found some similar problems and I have tried the suggestions for them all and still the left panel does not show the Folder tree structure as it should.

On a suggestion I ran sfc and got this...
"Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

Any thoughts?

Thanks

A:win7 pro not opening Folders in Explorer

DUH! OK, found it in the
Tools > Folder Options > Navigation Pane

"Show all Folders"
"Automatically expand.."

Had not seen that before for some reason. Maybe it only appears on the 64bit versions.

I believe the can't delete folder-"Access Denied" issue is separate but related. This happens only when I cut and paste from one section of the drive to another of the same drive. In which case I am locked out from being able to open the file (says the folder is empty) and I cannot delete one or more files within.

I have run UBCD and done the memory tests with no errors, I'm clean for viruses an malware, I have avg's latest and spybot. I finished doing a HijackThis check before posting this thread and everything was clean. I hope this helps...

Thanks...

Hi guys,

Having a bit of trouble here! There's a certain folder on my external HDD which causes Windows Explorer to crash when I attempt to open it. I've tried running a full virus scan and nothing has been detected, so I'm ruling out anything like that. Could it be down to file corruption?

Also, strangely enough, I copied the folder to my desktop and was able to open it and look through the files, however, as soon as I try to sort the files by certain parameters (date, size, etc.), it causes Windows Explorer to crash again.

Any idea what's causing this and how it can be fixed?

Many thanks!

(P.S. I apologise if I posted this in the wrong section!)

There is a big chance that something that is attached to explorer.exe is causing this issue, have you tried a clean boot? otherwise try to disable all Explorer.exe plugin's, see this article for that

I have several folders that when I try to open them-- They will open and then a "Send Error Report" window pops up stating that "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close". The folder will then be forced to close (along with any other folders that I might also have open at the time) and the screen goes blank for a second and then my desktop reappears with all the programs restarting in lower right corner.

One folder will even do the same thing if I just hold my cursor over the folder for a second. It will generate "error" window and semi-crash my windows.

It is not on most of my folders, just 3 or 4. I cannot delete the folders because it will do the same thing as opening it. I cannot move it because same things happens.

I have tried all the fix programs that I have and they crash as soon as the affected folder is scanned.

I have even tried doing scanning by Symantec and Panda and Trend Micro online and they just mysteriously close as soon as they get to the affected folders. BitDefender, Spybot, Ad-Aware and McAfee Stinger also crash or freeze up. So does Norton SystemWorks in its Virus Scan and its WinDocter...

I have tried to delete or move in "Safe Mode"-- same results.

Does anyone have some idea of what is causing this and how to fix it? (Hopefully without having to reformat)

Thanks

A:Windows explorer crash while opening folders/file

It may be related to some Explorer extension that was installed and crashing on network drives? Try disabling installed programs "shell integration" as much as you can to test.

Also, you probably want to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1, as it might fix something related to this crash, in addition to some other minor bugfixes.

We have a Windows 7 virtual machine running in VMWare (under Windows 8). The virtual machine has 2 processors and 4GB RAM. All the VM files are located on an external SSD connected via USB.

While browsing files in Windows Explorer (specifically trying to locate a file by drilling down a tree) the machine bluescreened with the "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA".

It would not reboot (stayed on the windows startup screen for 20 minutes before we gave up), and it would not System Repair (Tried for over 15 minutes and then failed), but it was able to System Restore to this morning after Windows Updates.

This issue has occurred twice before; once was with a different physical machine.

Tonight we're planning to use Verifier to see if any of the drivers have problems.

I just browsed my hard drive using windows explorer, and was surprised to find a few new (to me) folders in my C:\documents and settings folder. I and my wife are the only users. I'm the administrator. I'm accustomed to seeing entries for "all users", "default users", "guest", her, and me. But today I see folders called "LocalService", "NetworkService", and "Owner". Perhaps they've always been there, but I don't remember.

What created them? Do I need them? What do they do that I need to care about?

A:Unusual folders in C:\documents and settings

They have really always been there...but are usually hidden folders. Perhaps you unhid hidden folders recently in an attempt to find something in Windows System folers or someone helping you with your pc did.

I have a new system (presario) with vista home premium.
I have created 2 users, 1 admin for my business and 1 standard for family.
I am experiencing a crash dump with blue screen each time I try to download email from my road runner server. However only when I am logged on under the "standard" family user. I can log on to the business user (admin) and download emails from the same server with no issue.
The crash only occurs when logged in as family. I have deleted and recreated the user with no effect.
Please help, all tech support calls (to roadrunner and comp usa) have resulted in a referrals to microsoft.

Hi I installed Microsoft's SP1 update, together with IE8 yesterday. After rebooting, Windows Explorer keeps opening folders in a new window, if I double-click on them on the right side of the screen. They will only open in the same window if I use the navigation pane. I made sure that the radio button for "open folders in same window" is checked, have closed all then reopened IE/windows explorer windows, but nothing worked.

One forum suggestion was this (didn't work, though):
1) Open regedit
2) Open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\explore\command
3) In the Default registry key replace /separate with /same like this:
%SystemRoot%\Explorer.exe /separate ,/idlist,%I,%L -> %SystemRoot%\Explorer.exe /same ,/e,/idlist,%I,%L

I tried that, and it didn't work.

Any other suggestions? It's driving me crazy!

A:Vista Windows Explorer keeps opening folders in new windows

I had the same problem just after installing IE8. Apparently the installer fails to install at least 1 specific DLL correctly. Solution:

* open a new "Command Prompt" window by right-clicking and selecting "Run
as administrator";
* at the prompt, run the command "regsvr32 actxprxy.dll".

If you get an error from RegSvr32 with an error code of 0x80070005, you forgot to run the Command Prompt as administrator...

Hi guyz,

I am new to this forum. Recently, I have been not able to see thumbnails of pictures. All i can see is the standard river and tree like thingy. Secondly, I can't open folders in the same window. Each time i double click, it gets opend in a new window. I tried different methods to both the problems like going to folder options, unchecking "always show icon, never thumbnails" , a full scan of my system( using norton). I even tried some of the solutions posted in this forum. But still both the problems are not solved.

One thing i noticed is that, when i on my computer, i can see thumbanils for few seconds then all of them get changed to the standard image.(river and tree). Could this be due to a virus or something?

I would be very thankful if anyone can help me in this matter.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, first time post here. I maintain our church's computer systems and am an IT guy so know enough to be dangerous. We have a fairly new Dell desktop (2-3 years old) running XP Pro. Church secretary uses this machine and she is not very techy. I've run all the cleanup utils, virus scans, defrags, chkdsk /f etc. What happens is that after she is using the computer for awhile, she will go into My Documents and try to open a Word file. System seems to hang up. I checked the task manager and it says the My Documents has become non responsive. Have to end the task to get out of it. Seems to happen on any files in My Documents. I've been able to repeat it. I ran checkdsk /f, which seemed to run pretty slow. I'm beginning to wonder if the hard drive is failing but it only seems to happen when working in My docs. I'm going to do some more double checking but would be curious if you have any ideas or other things I could check. Thanks so much!

Came home from work today and my taskbar had a message saying "Windows Update has automatically installed new updates, a restart was needed and done" (didn't exactly say that, but that's the gist of it). Since then, any program that I try to start hangs; CNTRL-ALT-DEL is the only way to end the program (they all say "Not Responding"). Furthermore, folders won't open-including Control Panel.

I got into safe mode and was able to un-install all the latest updates, but that didn't do the trick, so I uninstalled all updates for the last couples months-nothing. I did a system restore from a few days ago with no new results.

I'm able to open programs and access the internet in Safe mode; I'm running XP on a Toshiba Satellite notebook.

I've also ran Ad-aware for any problems and deleted them.

Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

When ever I open a new window in Internet Explorer (including starting IE) or a link opens a new window or a pop up window appears the new window will hang or just sit there for 15 - 20 seconds and then load. It's even a bigger problem if I click a link that has a pop up then I have to wait that time for each window that opens. I also noticed that when I was burning a disc and I opened an internet explorer window almost the entire buffer emptied before before the window came up. Which leads me to believe something is happening to take all my resources (I know not supposed to do anything while burning).

If I click a link and it uses the same window the page loads up just fine. It's just when a new window opens.

This just started happening about a month ago and all of my searching has turned up nothing that helped. I've tried the msrepair, the cmd lines, you name it.

Hello,

I have had an occuring problem that just defies all.  I started having my computer shut down while I was playing Bad Company 2. I discovered that I needed to replace the thermal paste on the heatsink and voila, the problem disappeared.....or so I thought.  It went away for a few months, and I reapplied more thermal paste but it is back with a vengence.  I have completely cleaned the inside of the PC.  I took out the video card and thoroughly cleaned the fan on it as well.  I replaced the thermal paste, (Arctic Silver 5) and replaced the heatsink.  I then powered up, and immediately loaded BC2 to check the temp.  I am using Core Temp.  It is simple and easy to use.  Unfortunately for me the problem persists, and all the information I find seems to consist of forum after forum of "change your thermal paste....or, clean out your computer."  I am hoping that someone here will be able to at least lead me in the right direction.

I don't know if my video card is going bad, (no problems in game.)
I dont know if my heatsink is bad, (it's clear and clean)
Any game will cause this overheating shutdown to occur
Every other program on my computer works fine.  It only happens during gaming.

I came across a really bizarre issue a couple months ago (i've been leaving it alone after i tried fixing it for several days). I have a 5.1 channel speaker configuration but some content does not play with subwoofer, in other words no bass sound at all. I used to run winXP pro x64 edition but installed to winXP pro 32 bit when i got my new 320 gig HD and used the old HD for another PC.

In the winXP pro x64 edition everything used to play with bass or at least some low register sound.

With the winXP pro 32 bit edition evertyhing is played with bass or at least some low register sound except for stuff like the Windows Login and Shutdown, online media content (i.e. YouTube videos), or some PC games while other PC games play with 5.1 channel configuration.

My first guess was that the speakers were unplugged incorrectly or what not. So i checked that. everything seems to work fine when i test it with my sound configuration software that came with the motherboard (onboard audio).

My second guess was that some of the content should not be played in 5.1. Which i understand but they should be played with some lower register sound cause thats how it used to be and all of a sudden it stopped. So i'm not quite sure if what i'm viewing or listening to is whats causing the problem.

My third guess was my speakers are faulty or the onboard audio is faulty. But usually faulty devices are faulty right out of the box. I don't recall me doing anything to harm the inter... Read more

Thanks for taking the time to read this. First off, I tried searching the forums to see if my issue had a common solution. Sadly, I found only two other threads with the same problem I am having that received no replies. I hope that isn't an indication that this cannot be resolved.

These were the unanswered posts.
Just for reference.

Anyhow, I had been typically using my LCD TV as my laptop monitor. I would open my laptop, start it, let windows load and log in, then I would turn on my TV and close the laptop. The TV would then become the used monitor with the lid closed.

Yesterday, for reasons I don't know, this stopped. Now when I close my lid the TV does not display. I did not update my graphics card or install anything new onto my system. In fact, all I had done previously to the issue is some forum posting, using facebook, watching Hulu, and playing Fallout New Vegas.

Now the interesting thing is that my TV will still display if the lid is open and the settings are set to either duplicate or extend the screen. The replacing the screen option will result in nothing displayed on either TV or laptop.

Additionally, my TV can tell that there IS a signal. Normally if the cable is disconnected the TV will report "No Signal" but instead it is telling me "Mode Not Supported".

I've attempted changing the resolutions to values I know my TV displays, setting both monitors to this. It did not help. I made certain that the lid behavior is still ... Read more

Hi! I am having a serious issue, or rather my aunt is (I am on her computer) with the internet. Earlier, when we signed in to IE, a bunch of porn sites would pop up from google. Now this is usually easily fixed, but there is also this annoying (and actually probably dangerous!) thing going on with text on websites. it turns light green and becomes underlined, parts of words, or single letters, etc. I'll post a screen shot in a moment.

Anyways, we have run a virus scan, nothing. a spyware scan, nothing. we went through the programs list, and nothing.

apparently the problem started when my cousin was playing games on shockwave.

but also, on the desktop, we get about 4 icons to sites of the above nature.

while I get the screenshot, this is the website that the green text leads to "http://www.realmatics.com/cgi-bin//ezlclk.fcgi?id=521"

so...any innitial ideas? I have no idea how to fix it!

I recently purchased a HP dv6-1030us with 64 bit Vista. Love it however I have sound distortion when listening to CDs using windows media player or listeing to music on iTunes. There are "breaks" or "hiccups" in the music. Sometimes it's barely noticeable but there, and sometimes more pronounced. The music isn't smooth. The sound distortion occurs even when I listen to the music via headphones or use external speakers as well. I have called HP Support and they have altered sound settings, deleted/added the sound driver, and updated the BIOS, however the issue still exists. I returned the laptop for a new one and the same thing occurs with the new laptop as well.

Laptop Specs:

Problem:
Desktop is experiencing lag spikes, recording an average ping of over 500 on pingtest.net with 3 different browsers, ie, firefox, and chrome. Laptop on same network averages under 20 with same 3 browsers.

I test the wireless nic adapter by plugging it into laptop disabling the laptops wifi. The test showed wireless nic adapter was was not at fault, recording average ping of under 10. I also tried a different wireless adapter on desktop and still no change.

I've tried a basic "ping -t www.google.com" through the command prompt on both the laptop and desktop and they both showed a similar ping time of around 30, which I find odd. I would expect the desktop to have higher ping times. It seems I only have high latency when using a browser.

The lag is really noticeable when playing mmo flash games, which is a big problem. The desktop has very low cpu usage with browser open, under 5%.
I've tried a gamebooster app to kill all non essential background apps but no change. I've also tried WLAN Optimizer and Vista Anti-Lag but they didn't help either. My network monitoring app on desktop also shows that there isn't any running that would cause the lag. Anyone know what might be the cause?

I have searched this forum as well as many other forums in search of an answer to this question but i am yet to have any sort of success.

I have recently purchased a new system to act as a Media center. For some time I have been running a dual-boot system (XP Pro / Media Center) and I have just got round to setting up a system just for Media purposes.

Upon transferring the two hard drives used for my Media PC I have started to recieve and error upon startup. I get the classic error "boot failure, insert system disk and press enter".

Now I am sure that this has something to do with the fact that my original setup consisted of 4 hard drives...

IDE 1 - Windows XP OS
IDE 2 - Windows XP OS Applications
IDE 3 - Media Center OS
SATA 1 - Media Centre OS Media Files

obviously the only drive that had a boot.ini file and contained a Master Boot Record was the Windows XP OS drive and you chose which OS you wanted to boot on startup.

I have ran repair and ran fixmbr of what have you and i have copied the boot.ini files over to the media center drive and set it as the primary drive, however it still gives the same error. The hardware setup works fine as i have managed to install XP on the other hard drive.

All I want to do is find a way to get the system to recognise the intallation of Media Center on the IDE drive.

Regards, Matt.

The laptop I'm trying to fix had an attempted BIOS update. Something went wrong and now the system seems to be skipping BIOS completely. Then, it goes straight to a BSOD with an 'irql_not_less_or_equal' error. I have tried refreshing/resting the computer in advanced options, system recovery, boot repair, everything that I've been able to find or think of. After the system reset and refresh, it worked completely fine until I restarted the computer and then loop started again. I have no access to an OS on the system (installed or live disk/usb) and I can't do a reformat and clean install because I can't change the boot order (the HDD is the primary boot device) Anyone got any ideas? It really has me stumped...

A:Very unusual BSOD issue

Sorry for the delay in responding. There just aren't that many people who do BSOD analysis, so at times we get a bit overwhelmed!

If the system wasn't using UEFI or Secure Boot, then a UEFI update would reset the system to using it - thereby making the system unbootable (took us almost a day to figure this out at work)

It can't be skipping the UEFI, it may just be that there's no screen showing.
Usually you can access the UEFI setup by holding one of the F (function) keys when the system boots.
This will change depending on the make of the system. Try Esc, F2, F4, F8, and F12 for starters

I have a system with these specs:
AMD 550, 20gig hard, 200mg RAM, VOODOO 3000 videocard

This is my problem: I recently got DSL which worked fine up until I upgraded my system from Windows 95 to Windows 98 and changed from an Intel PII 300 to the AMD processer. After every 3 or 4 minutes of being connected and browsing the web, I get about 30-45 seconds of "dead time" with my service. In other words, I'll try to click onto links or type in a URL, but there is no data being sent or retrieved from the web. After that 30-45 seconds it goes back to normal, but then it comes back again in 3-4 minutes. I thought it might be the DSL, but I left my 56k modem in there and the same thing happens when I use it.

After posting this message a few days ago, someone asked me what browser I was using. I use IE 5.0, so I tried using Netscape and sure enough it worked fine. So now my question is this:

Now that I know that there's a problem with my Explorer browser, what exactly is wrong with it and how do I fix the problem?

A:unusual problem with explorer

IE may need some routine maintance such as deleting cookies, temporary internet files and maybe even your history folder. The long term use of IE will have offered the chance for extensive file build up. Netscape being a new application will not have had time to build up a large overhead. IE 5 has a utility to Repair itself. You should try it first in case IE has a problem. If you do have IE 5.0 and not 5.01, the next thing to do is download a copy of 5.01. 5.0 had several glitches that were corrected in 5.01.

I have 2 computers: 1 is a Compac Deskpro running windows 2000 Pro and the other is an E-machines running XP. Both have worked fine until now.

When I try to copy and paste an image from the My Pictures folder on either machine, each machine's Word program crashes. I have used this exact function on both machines for years with no problem.

I have pasted this same inage from a camera memory disc on both machines previously with no problem.

I have uninstalled Office and reinstalled it on the Compac. The same result - every time. Word crashes.

Any ideas?
